Right then, that is it from this low-scoring thriller where Delhi defended their lowest-ever total and Gujarat lost for the first time while chasing this season and only the second time in their short history. However, the action in the Indian T20 League continues as we have a double-header lined up on 3rd May, Wednesday. The first game will be between Lucknow and Chennai and that will start at 3.30 pm IST (10 am GMT). After that, Punjab will take on Mumbai in a huge game for both teams. The first ball will be bowled at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up for both games. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Mohammad Shami is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant spell of 4 for 11 from his four overs. He says that he tries to stick to his plans and adds that he always wants to bowl in the right areas irrespective of the format. Feels that 130 was a gettable total and it was about playing the first 6 overs well. Adds that after losing wickets at regular intervals and all they needed was one good partnership. Ends by saying that they still have plenty of games left and such losses can happen.

David Warner, the victorious captain of Delhi says that their bowlers were amazing. Adds that the batters struggled but credits Shami for his brilliant spell. Tells that he doesn't know what is happening with their batting and they are finding ways to lose wickets in clumps. Mentions that they tried to keep a positive intent which did not work out but they got the two points. Says that Khaleel Ahmed was really good after coming back from injury and he was unlucky to miss out on the last game as he was fit. Praises Ishant Sharma and tells that he was a bit scared when Tewatia was going off as he knows he hits the ball cleanly at the death but credits Sharma once again for executing his plans to perfection.

Presentation Time...

The star of the moment for Delhi, Ishant Sharma is in for a chat. He says that he was practising bowling wide yorkers with the new ball. Adds that the hard work paid off and he just backed himself with the yorkers. Shares that they spend a lot of time in preparation and planning for a specific batter. Reckons that it is about executing those single balls every single time when on the field. On bowling to Rahul Tewatia, he says that he has played enough cricket against him and he knew he had to double bluff him. Ends by saying that they do not really think about the target and it is about executing the plans.

Hardik Pandya, the skipper of Gujarat, starts by saying that they would have taken 130 on any given day. Adds that Rahul Tewatia got them back in the game and he himself tried his best but could not capitalize. Shares that they were hoping to get a couple of big overs during the middle phase but could not get the rhythm. Credits the Delhi bowlers for the way they bowled and takes the ownership of failing to finish the game. Feels that the wicket was good but it was a touch on the slower side. Reckons that the loss of wickets meant they could not get any rhythm in the middle. On Mohammad Shami's spell, he says that he feels sorry for him. Adds that despite bowling so well and restricting Delhi to a below-par total, it was the batters who disappointed. Ends by saying that they still have plenty of games left and will look to take the learnings and move onto the next game.

Earlier in the game, Delhi posted a well below-par score on the board. It was made possible due to a crucial maiden fifty from Aman Khan and some contributions from Ripal Patel and Axar Patel. Mohammad Shami was the star of the show with the ball with four wickets while Mohit Sharma picked up a couple of wickets and Rashid Khan got one too. While chasing, Gujarat also lost a few too many wickets in the Powerplay and despite a fighting half-century from Hardik Pandya and late fireworks from Rahul Tewatia, they ended up on the losing side.

Delhi will be pleased with their bowling effort as they showed huge fight and determination while trying to defend this low total. Khaleel Ahmed gave them the perfect start by getting a wicket in the first over to set the tone as Ishant Sharma and Anrich Nortje followed it with their own wickets in the Powerplay. After that, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel applied the squeeze in the middle overs and did not give anything away which continued to build pressure on the batters. Ahmed was brilliant in the death overs as well but Nortje went for plenty which almost took this game out of their hands. However, Ishant Sharma stepped up big time in the last over and defended 11 runs quite successfully.

Gujarat would have hoped that they get to a steady start to set up the base for this chase but Delhi had other plans. They lost Wriddhiman Saha in the first over while Shubman Gill and Vijay Shankar followed him soon and they were reduced to 26-3 inside the Powerplay. Pandya held one end, losing one partner after the other, at the other end and the promotion of David Miller also did not work out as he was dismissed too while trying to be a bit too cute. However, after that, the skipper finally found a batter in Abhinav Manohar who supported him really well. They built up an extremely crucial partnership and kept them in the chase. Pandya registered a fine fifty and both added 62 runs together but it was difficult for them to find the boundaries and Manohar perished trying to find one. However, the iceman, Rahul Tewatia came in and smashed three sixes in the penultimate over to make the equation 12 runs in the last over but he could not finish the job and they fell short by five runs in the end.

Take a bow, Ishant Sharma! What a last over under pressure! He has taken Delhi over the line and they are still in the tournament. It was a battle between 1st and 10th and the bottom team performed incredibly well to win a low-scoring thriller here. This is why we love the Indian T20 League!

Commentary

We are back for the chase. The umpires and players make their way out to the middle.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Gujarat will certainly be the happier side at the halfway mark. They are on a course to register their fourth straight win and it is now upon their batters to finish the job. On the other hand, Delhi would have liked a few runs more but they have something to bowl at. Can Delhi bowlers make a match out of this? We shall find out shortly. Back in a bit for the chase.

Mohammad Shami is the new Purple Cap holder for now. He says that you have to know your home conditions well and he just tries to execute the plans that are discussed in the meetings. Tells that it is his job to attack the wickets and when you get two or three wickets in the Powerplay that sets the tone for your team. Mentions that the first wicket was a bit lucky but he gave his all in his spell of four overs and he is very happy with it. Ends by saying that they should chase this total down as he feels the wicket is not that bad to bat.

After David Warner called it right and opted to bat first, the visitors lost the in-form Philip Salt on the very first ball of the game. Moreover, the run out of skipper David Warner made matters worse for them. The top and middle order of Delhi fell apart like a pack of cards and they were soon reduced to 23-5. Axar Patel and Aman Khan then got together and calmed the nerves somewhat with a 50-run stand. The former departed before he could up the ante but Aman Khan showed resistance and stroked his maiden Indian T20 League fifty. He then combined with Ripal Patel and forged a good recovery but his departure meant Delhi were unable to maximize during the back end of the innings.

Despite the late fightback by Aman Khan, this has been a clinical bowling display by Gujarat and they have done well to restrict Delhi to 130. As he always does, it was Mohammad Shami who helped Gujarat set the tone early. He broke the back of the opposition batting unit by dealing early blows. Other bowlers complemented him well and continued to keep the pressure on the opposition batters by chipping in with wickets at regular intervals. Aman Khan did trouble them during the middle overs but they got rid of him before he could inflict any damage in the death overs. Mohammad Shami was the pick of the bowlers for Gujarat with figures of 4 for 11 from his four overs.

Kuldeep Yadav comes out to the middle and will face the final delivery of the innings.

19.5W

OUT! TAKEN! Mohit Sharma strikes again! This is his 100th Indian T20 League wicket! He continues with the slower ones, fuller this time and on off, Ripal Patel moves across and slogs wildly across the line but only manages to get an outside edge in the air and Hardik Pandya at point settles under it and takes a good catch. A good cameo though from Patel!

OUT! CAUGHT! What a start for Mohammad Shami and Gujarat! Shami begins with a length delivery outside off, a hint of away movement, Philip Salt throws his hands at the ball and picks the bones out of it. However, he picks out David Miller at extra cover to perfection. The home crowd are up on the feet as Delhi lose their first wicket on the very first ball

We are all set to start! The two umpires are making their way to the middle followed by the home team. David Warner and Philip Salt stride out as they are the two openers for Delhi. Mohammad Shami has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

Hardik Pandya, the skipper of Gujarat, says that they were looking to bowl first anyway and adds that he feels chasing is the ideal thing to do. Shares that the talk in the team has been about the intent and reckons it is important to give cushion to the bowlers on a high scoring venue. Mentions that it is about staying calm and humble irrespective of the position in the standings. Ends by informing that they are going with the same team.

David Warner, the skipper of Delhi, says that they will bat first. Adds that the wicket looks a bit dry and they want to put a total on the board and then defend it. Tells that they have some good players and hopefully they showcase their talent in this game. Mentions that he is always positive and they want to play good cricket regardless of the results. Informs Mitchell Marsh is sick and Rilee Rossouw comes in for him and Khaleel Ahmed also comes back in the team after his injury.

Impact Players nominated by Delhi - Khaleel Ahmed, Lalit Yadav, Yash Dhull, Pravin Dubey and Abishek Porel.

Delhi (Playing XI) - David Warner (C), Philip Salt (WK), Manish Pandey, Rilee Rossouw (In for Mitchell Marsh), Priyam Garg, Ripal Patel, Axar Patel, Aman Khan, Kuldeep Yadav, Anrich Nortje, Ishant Sharma.

Impact Players nominated by Gujarat - Shubman Gill, Sai Kishore, KS Bharat, Sai Sudharsan and Shivam Mavi.

Gujarat (Playing XI) - Wriddhiman Saha (WK), Vijay Shankar, Hardik Pandya (C), Abhinav Manohar, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, Mohammad Shami, Mohit Sharma, Joshua Little.

TOSS - The coin toss lands in the favour of David Warner and Delhi have opted to BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Nick Knight is pitchside. He says that there might be some rain around. Adds that there is a nice covering of grass but it is a little bit drier. Tells that the average score on this wicket is 175-180. Mentions that the pacers can get some help in the Powerplay but overall it will be good for batting.

On the flip side, Delhi suffered their sixth loss of the season after losing to Hyderabad in their previous encounter. The visitors will heavily rely on their top three, consisting of David Warner, Philip Salt, and Mitchell Marsh. The spin twins Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav have been successful in keeping the opposition batters on their toes and will need to be on top of their game against the strong batting unit of Gujarat. The pace department has lacked sharpness, and it is about time the likes of Anrich Nortje and Ishant Sharma step up. Will Delhi produce a massive upset? Let’s find out. Toss and team news coming up shortly...

Having gotten the better of Kolkata in their last outing, Gujarat are on a three-match winning streak and are aiming to make it four wins on the trot. Shubman Gill has been Gujarat’s standout batter, providing solid starts for the team. The explosive duo of Vijay Shankar and David Miller have won matches with their clean hitting and will be required to keep up the good work. Rashid Khan and Mohammad Shami have starred for them in their respective departments and will need to be at their best in this game.

Hello and a warm welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to our coverage of Match 44 of the Indian T20 League, 2023, where Gujarat will be hosting Delhi at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This is going to be a clash of teams with contrasting fortunes, as Gujarat is currently sitting at the top of the standings with six wins, whereas Delhi is languishing at the bottom with just two wins.

... MATCH DAY ...

We are already midway into the Indian T20 League and the table is slowly starting to shape up. In Match 44, Gujarat will host a struggling Delhi side at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Hardik Pandya's team is living up to the defending champion's tag. Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill are delivering good starts, and the pair will look to milk Delhi's rusty bowling attack. Pandya, Vijay Shankar, and David Miller have all made runs in the middle order, which makes the side confident. They have depth in the batting line-up, and they will expect runs from Rahul Tewatia and Abhinav Manohar if needed. Their bowling is one of the best in the tournament with fiery spells from Pandya and Mohammad Shami at the top and Joshua Little, Noor Ahmad, and Rashid Khan squeezing the opposition in the middle overs. Mohit Sharma has also been brilliant with his different variations. They are a well-balanced unit and will fancy a victory here. Delhi, on the other hand, are having a tough season as they have won only two out of eight games and the chances of them qualifying for the playoffs are all but over. Their key players have been out of form and they just couldn't win those crunch moments in matches. However, they have nothing to lose now and will look to play positive cricket which makes them a bit dangerous for others. David Warner and Philip Salt will need to utilise the Powerplay better while we know that Mitchell Marsh only bats one way. The good thing for them is that they have runs under their belt. Manish Pandey needs to take more responsibility in the middle order along with Sarfaraz Khan and they should think about promoting Axar Patel up the order as he has been their best player with his all-round performance. Their bowling has been very inconsistent, as Anrich Nortje and Kuldeep Yadav haven't made that much impact which is a concern. Mukesh Kumar has done well for them and he is a bright spot and Marsh has also contributed with crucial wickets but they will need to perform collectively if they want to defeat this high-flying Gujarat team. Let's see who comes out on top.
