Commentary

Right then, another game is done and dusted in the 2023 Cricket World Cup, and the host nation India has a stronghold on the group stage with 6 wins out of 6. There are still teams who are looking to dislodge teams off those top 4 places and two of them square off in the next game. It will be Afghanistan taking on Sri Lanka on Monday, the 30 of October at the MCA Stadium in Pune. That game will begin at 2 pm IST (8.30 am GMT) but our build-up will begin much sooner. Do join us then. Until then, take care and goodbye!

Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper says that this was a game of a lot of characters in the squad. Adds that when it got tough the experienced players stepped up. Tells that looking at the tournament, they had to bat first here and were challenged up front as England bowled well. Says they were not great with the bat as losing three wickets that early is not a good sign. Further adds that a couple of guys threw it away including himself in the end but he was just trying to be positive and put away the loose balls. Praises his bowlers for their efforts with the new ball and it was important to get those early wickets. Mentions that they can always rely on the seamers and they exploited the conditions really well. Reckons they have a good balance with the squad and wants everyone to continue like this throughout the tournament.

Jos Buttler, the captain of England starts off by saying that he was very disappointed with the batting performance, at the halfway stage, chasing 230 runs, they would have fancied themselves. He adds that he wasn't sure about the dew which would create some problems for his team and went with his gut at the toss. He then says that he was impressed with the fielding of the team and the bowlers who worked really hard and surprised the opposition's batters but the way they themselves batted was frustrating. Mentions that the Indian bowlers bowled well but they failed to back up the bowling display. Ends by saying that they are aware of the 2025 Champions Trophy Qualification scenario and will look to give it their all.

Rohit Sharma, the skipper of India is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his stellar 87 on a difficult pitch. He starts by saying that it was a difficult pitch and after the first 10 overs, it was important to build a partnership. Adds that sometimes you have to play the situation instead of just playing your shots and that experience matters but also reckons that they were still 20-30 runs short. Ends by saying that it was tough against the new ball and it got easier with the softer ball but it was still difficult to rotate strike but is very happy with the win and the performance of his team.

The Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Jos Buttler won the toss and put India into bat for the first time in this tournament. This decision proved to be a fruitful one as David Willey and Chris Woakes bowled wonderfully up top, getting India three down for just 40 runs. England simply couldn't build on the brilliant start created and the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma countered brilliantly. Adil Rashid bowled well through the middle stages but a solid 87 from Sharma along with an entertaining 49 from Suryakumar Yadav took India to a defendable total of 229 runs. In reply, the Indian pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami were all over the opposition batters and along with the spinners, sealed a memorable 100-run win to keep their winning run going in this tournament.

England would have thought just like in 2019, they would end the winning streak of India given their bowling performance but have instead hit rock-bottom with this batting display. The openers started briskly and Dawid Malan definitely looked good but he chopped one onto the stumps and very uncharacteristically, Joe Root got across the stumps first ball only to be trapped in front. From there, there was no coming back as Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow perished soon enough. Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali offered some resistance but succumbed to the mounting pressure and only David Willey was the other batter who got a couple of lusty blows away before they got bundled out for 129 runs.

India had just 229 runs on the board, exactly what the Netherlands had in the last game against Bangladesh and just like the Dutch, India were able to pull off a commanding win as well. Jasprit Bumrah started off in a fine fashion, keeping things tight but Mohammed Siraj leaked a few runs. Bumrah though got a couple of big wickets in consecutive deliveries before Mohammed Shami came in and bowled a miraculous spell, picking up two quick wickets himself as well. Both bowlers were on a hat-trick at one point but unfortunately, neither could get that elusive feat. Kuldeep Yadav then came in and piled on the pressure and just when England were building a steady stand, Shami came back in and got rid of Moeen Ali. This triggered another collapse and both Shami and Bumrah knocked over the tail, finishing with 4 and 3 wickets respectively.

What a way to seal a sixth consecutive win and India shoot back up to the top of the points table! The host nation was asked the question to defend a score and they have defended a pretty low score with utmost ease and this win will give them even more confidence going into the business end of the tournament. As for England, yet another shambolic showing with the bat and the reigning champions stay rooted to the bottom of the table.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! Rohit Sharma can be seen leading his team in a huddle before striding out to the middle as the two umpires take their places as well. The left-hand, right-hand combination of Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow is the opening pair for England. Jasprit Bumrah will get proceedings underway in the second innings with the ball and has a couple of slips in place.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, India have just about posted a competitive total on the board and they also have the quality to defend this score. While England batters haven't had the best of the World Cups but they will still back themselves to gun this down and end the winning streak of the Men in Blue. Join us in a bit to see how the chase unfolds.

Chris Woakes is up for a chat. He says that it is nice to get going with the new ball and it was one of the areas they needed to improve upon. Adds that it is always nice when you have rhythm and are able to put the opposition under pressure early on. mentions that it was frustrating to not get his lengths right early in the tournament and he is his biggest critic. Adds that there was some spin and the wicket was two-paced and their batters should assess the conditions. Ends by saying that he doesn't have much idea on how the wicket will play but hopes that it gets better under lights.

England, on the other hand, will be happy with the bowling effort. They looked like a team with a lot of energy and that was visible in their fielding right from the start. Chris Woakes was excellent with the new ball and got the early breakthrough which was followed up by David Willey with the big wicket of Virat Kohli. Woakes was given an extended first spell and he delivered again. However, after that, they let India slowly get back into the game. The wicket was turning a lot as well which will give confidence to the Indin spinners. It was Willey again who broke that huge partnership but even though they were able to squeeze in some cheap overs, they struggled to pick up wickets. Just when things were looking a bit bleak, Adil Rashid sent Rohit Sharma back to the hut which surely took some runs away from the total. Willey ended up with three wickets while Rashid got a couple and Mark Wood chipped in with one. The only thing they could have done better is bowled out the hosts and not let the tail add those crucial few runs in the end.

India got off to a steady start but lost Shubman Gill quite early on and then Virat Kohli also went back without troubling the scorers. Shreyas Iyer succumbed to yet another short ball and there were shades of the first game that the hosts played against the Aussies. However, in between all this, it looked like Rohit Sharma was playing on a different pitch altogether and kept scoring the runs. He also found strong support from KL Rahul as both of them took the hosts out of that difficult situation with a 90-run stand before a poor shot cost Rahul his wicket. Sharma also crossed 18000 international runs in this game which is an amazing feat. He was then joined by SKY and they continued to rack up the runs but the skipper just lost his patience and was dismissed for 87 trying to up the ante which meant India had to rebuild again. SKY lost a couple of partners but he scored a crucial 49 and just missed out on his fifty. Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav stayed till the end and gave themselves something to play with when they come out to bowl after the break.

A fine recovery from India! They were 40/3 at one stage but finished with 229 runs which shows a fighting effort from them. They would have hoped for a few extra runs at the death but if there is any team that can defend this, it is India. However, credit must also go to England for testing the hosts properly for the first time in this World Cup.

OUT! CAUGHT! That is a huge opportunity missed for Shreyas Iyer but the decision to keep Chris Woakes on for an extended spell has proved to be a positive one for Jos Buttler and England. Woakes bangs this one a bit on a shorter length and over the stumps. It is again the pressure created by the dot balls prior to this delivery that draws Iyer into playing a reckless shot. Iyer looks to muscle the pull but miscues it badly toward mid on. Mark Wood over there settles under it and takes a simple catch. India in all sorts of trouble now.

11.40

Back of a length around off, Shreyas Iyer hangs back and pats it down in front of point.

11.30

Iyer just leaves his bat hanging while looking to block and gets an outside edge that lands well short of the first slip.

Done with the pre-match formalities and it is now time to get the play underway. The umpires are out in the middle and the England players stride out to take their places on the field as well. Skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill will open the innings for India as usual. David Willey has the new ball in hand and will look to get it swinging early on. Just the one slip in place. Let's go...

We are minutes away from the start of this highly-anticipated clash but first, the two sets of players will line up for their respective national anthems. It will be the national anthem of England first, followed by the Indian national anthem.

Rohit Sharma, the captain of India says that they would have batted first as well. Adds that the pitch looks good and it should play well for all 100 overs. Tells that it is always nice to have a break after a hectic schedule and it is good to come back to business with a fresh mind. Informs they are unchanged.

Jos Buttler, the skipper of England says that they will bowl first and it is a gut decision and hopefully today is the day they play their best cricket. Adds that they haven't played at their best and against India in a World Cup is a special occasion and will hope to rise up to the occasion. Mentions that whatever they have done first, they haven't been able to do it well and will look to give it their all. Ends by informing that they are going with the same team from the previous game.

India (Unchanged Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj.

England (Unchanged Playing XI) - Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler (C/WK), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood

TOSS - Jos Buttler calls it right and England have elected to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Ravi Shastri and Naseer Hussain are pitchside. Ravi says that the pitch looks like that of the Wankhede Stadium from the 1980s and 90s but adds that there is wear and tear and there are patches that will help the spinners. Says that it is a drier pitch than usual and will aid the spinners. Naseer says that it will certainly spin but when and how much, that is to be seen. Adds that England will prefer the ball to spin a lot as India are at their best when the track turns a bit but when it turns a lot, England can exploit it. Ravi adds that it won't be easy to get Ravichandran Ashwin directly into the line-up.

England, on the other hand, haven't performed anywhere near like the holders of the trophy and with only one win, their chances of making it to the semis are all but over. However, not long before they were the top side in limited overs cricket and scared other teams with their attacking style of play but that has completely backfired here. They still have world-class players like Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, and Liam Livingstone and so on but no one has performed to their full potential. They will hope that all the criticism get them fired up and they put up a stern challenge to the hosts. Mark Wood will be key with the ball because this is his home ground as he plays for Lucknow in the Indian T20 League but he will obviously need support from the others as well to get the win. Stay tuned for toss and other updates.

India have been by far the best team in this World Cup and it is going to take something really special to go past them. The Rohit-Kohli masterclasses are on show almost every game while youngsters Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer are doing their job effectively as well. Their bowling also have been amazing with Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja forming a strong partnership while Jasprit Bumrah has troubled the batters at all phases of the game. Mohammed Shami finally got his chance in the last match against the Kiwis and ended up with a five-wicket haul. Their bench strength is also really good and if they want an extra spinner against the English batters, they always have the option of Ravichandran Ashwin. The current form suggests that they should be able to win this one but they are smart enough not to take any opponents lightly and just continue to do the simple things right and the results will follow.

Hello and a warm welcome folks! The Men in Blue are back in action in the World Cup and this time they will be taking on the defending champions England at the Ekana Sports City in Lucknow. India are the only unbeaten team in this tournament and will look to maintain while the Englishmen will hope to make a statement and save some pride.

... MATCH DAY ...

Two of the white-ball powerhouses in India and England are about to square off in match number 29 of the 2023 ODI World Cup at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Undoubtedly, these two teams would have been up there in the pecking order of the cricket pundits as the title contenders, but what has transpired so far has been surprising. India have lived up to the favourites tag, whereas England have failed to turn up and find their qualification hopes hanging by a thread. With five out of five wins, Rohit Sharma's men are all but through to the semis and will aim to keep their unbeaten record intact. The Men in Blue are coming off an emphatic victory against their nemesis of ICC tournaments, New Zealand. While chasing a competitive target of 274 runs, Rohit Sharma got them off to a strong start, and after the stutter in the middle phase, Virat Kohli's chase masterclass took them over the line. India's middle order did not have much to do in the first four games, and them getting tested under pressure against New Zealand is another box ticked for Rohit Sharma's side. With Hardik Pandya yet to fully recover from the ligament tear, Suryakumar Yadav is likely to keep his place in the squad. Considering that India do not have a left-hander in the top 6, the Indian team management might give it some thought about including Ishan Kishan in place of Suryakumar. In the spin department, Ravindra Jadeja did his job of keeping things quiet, while Kuldeep Yadav was a bit expensive in his first few overs but came roaring back towards the end. When it comes to the pace department, Mohammed Shami justified his selection with a five-wicket haul, which has given India a good headache for the England game. With the relaid Lucknow surface offering good assistance to spinners, Rohit Sharma might be tempted to add another spinner in the form of Ravichandran Ashwin. As far as the reigning champions, England, are concerned, they seem to be heading for an early exit at this stage of the tournament. Except for the victory against Bangladesh, they have been outplayed in the other four games. In the previous encounter against Sri Lanka, a flop show with the bat meant they suffered their third straight defeat. Known for playing an aggressive brand of cricket, England's batting unit has misfired collectively. Their top order of Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, and Joe Root have failed to give their side good starts, which has hurt them badly. If England are to script a turnaround in the event, two of their experienced white-ball batters, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler, will have to fire and fire quickly. Having been left out in the last game, Harry Brook may be recalled to the side at the expense of Liam Livingstone. Mooen Ali, too, is yet to make an impact, and the all-rounder will have to come good soon. Other than the injured Reece Topley, Adil Rashid has stood out for England, and the leggie will hold the key in Lucknow. David Willey has been impressive with the new ball, but the likes of Chris Woakes and Mark Wood have failed to show up. Time is running out for Jos Buttler and Co. to get their World Cup campaign on track. Will England manage to return to winning ways? Or will India continue on their merry way? We will find out soon enough.
