Right then, that's all from this game. India have become the first team to qualify for the semis of the 2023 ODI World Cup. As far as Sri Lanka are concerned, it has been a dismal campaign for them, and they now find themselves on the brink of elimination. The action in the 2023 ODI World Cup continues on Friday, November 3rd when the Netherlands take on Afghanistan in Lucknow. Both teams have punched above their weight, and it should be a cracker of a game. The first ball will be bowled at 2 pm IST (8.30 am GMT), but our build-up will begin much sooner. Until then, take care and goodbye!

Rohit Sharma, the victorious skipper of India says that he is very happy knowing that they have officially made it to the semis. Adds that this was the first aim and everyone chipped in with good performances in all seven games. Tells that they batted really well to put a 350+ score on the board which is a great total on any wicket. Says that Shreyas Iyer is a very strong lad mentally and he showed his qualities with the bat here and took the attack to the Lankan bowlers with those huge hits. Praises Mohammed Siraj as well and having a fast bowler like him who can do that is a great thing for a captain. Credits Suryakumar Yadav as well for stepping up in the last game and says that their pace unit is absolutely fantastic and they are exploiting the conditions well. Mentions that KL Rahul has been good behind the stumps and he needs someone who can help him with the reviews and he has stepped up for that. Ends by saying that they are up for the South Africa challenge next and both teams are playing good cricket and the people of Kolkata will enjoy that match.

Sri Lanka's captain, Kusal Mendis says he is really disappointed including himself as the batting unit couldn't score runs. He praises the opposition's bowling unit and credits their bowlers. Mentions that he is very happy with the performance of Dilshan Madushanka as he bowled really well in the first overs as well as the middle overs. Adds that Shubman Gill's chance and Virat Kohli's chance weren't taken and it could have gone either way. States that he is happy that they bowled pretty well in the middle overs. He still believes in the team as they have a slight margin to qualify for the knockouts and hopes that they will come back against Bangladesh and New Zealand.

Mohammed Shami is the Player of the Match for his amazing five-wicket haul. He firstly thanks the almighty. He says that all the practice in the nets is paying off and they are enjoying bowling as a unit. Adds that all the bowlers are having fun and it becomes easy to bowl when the environment around you is so good. Tells that he just focuses on hitting the right lengths and staying in good rhythm as in a long tournament like this it is hard to find it back if you lose it. Says that it is all about recovering well, eating well and keeping your mind free and the results will follow. Ends by saying that that support has been fantastic not just here but outside India as well and he hopes that it goes on like this and he continues to perform for the fans.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, after being inserted into bat, India were dealt an early blow as they lost Rohit Sharma on the second delivery of the game. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli then got together and helped India recover from that shaky start with an 189-run stand. Having gotten life early on in their innings, both Gill and Kohli grew in confidence as the innings progressed and ran Sri Lanka ragged. Although they missed out on their respective hundreds, they had done their job of laying a solid foundation for the Indian innings. Shreyas Iyer then took over and dealt in sixes to ensure that the innings did not lose steam during his entertaining 82-run knock. It was Ravindra Jadeja who batted through and his unbeaten cameo helped India cross 350. For Sri Lanka, Dilshan Madushanka was the only positive with a five-wicket haul and he became the 4th Sri Lankan bowler to pick five wickets or more in a World Cup game.

With 358 to chase for victory, Sri Lanka had to pull off something special, given that a 300-plus score had never been chased at the Wankhede Stadium. As the scoreboard suggests, there is nothing much to write home about for the Lankan batters. They were off to the worst possible start in their chase as Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne were dismissed for a golden duck. Just like the openers, Sadeera Samarawickrama and Kusal Mendis looked all at sea against the Indian new ball attack. Charith Asalanka and Angelo Mathews showed resistance, but the relentless Indian pace attack kept coming at them, and they had to eventually throw in the towel. Thanks to contributions from Kasun Rajitha and Maheesh Theekshana, they were able to cross the 36-run mark, the lowest score in ODI World Cup history. However, the writing was already on the wall for them and in the end, they capitulated to an embarrassing loss in 19.4 overs.

As they have done throughout the World Cup, India put on an absolute clinic with the new ball yet again. Jasprit Bumrah set the tone for the hosts with a wicket from his very first delivery, and it certainly rubbed off on his new ball partner. Having not been that effective upfront in the past few games, Mohammed Siraj returned to his usual best and had the ball on a string to set the cat among the pigeons. Mohammed Shami wasted no time in getting into the act and made sure to pile more misery on the Sri Lankan batters. He ran through the opposition's lower middle order and bagged another five-wicket haul of this World Cup. Also, he is now India's leading wicket-taker in Cricket World Cup history, a testament to his legacy. Towards the end, Ravindra Jadeja was brought into the attack and he completed the formalities to wrap up a thumping victory for India.

As clinical as it can get! It was nothing short of a dream game for the Men in Blue in the 'City of Dreams'! A resounding victory by a margin of 302 runs for Rohit Sharma's men and by doing so, they have sealed their berth in the semis of the 2023 ODI World Cup. As for Sri Lanka, they have been absolutely annihilated by India in this encounter, and it was a performance they would like to forget as quickly as possible. At the halfway mark, they would have hoped to put up a fight with the bat, but it seems like the mental scars inflicted by India during the Asia Cup final have not healed yet.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! We can see the Indian players in a huddle and now they spread out to take their respective field positions. Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne are the two openers for Sri Lanka. Jasprit Bumrah to start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, India have posted a huge total on the board and with their quality bowling attack, they will be confident of defending this one. Sri Lanka will need some inspiration and all of their batting resources to gun this down and hand the hosts their first defeat. Join us in a bit to see how the chase unfolds.

Shreyas Iyer, one of the architects of the Indian innings is up for a quick chat. He says that it was a pretty good wicket to bat. Adds that it was easy to rotate the strike. Mentions that his plan was to capitalise on loose deliveries. Feels that Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli steadied the ship and laid the platform for others to chip in. Shares that the message was that the slower deliveries were holding in the surface and therefore, they had to watch for it carefully.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, only have themselves to blame as they dropped catches of both Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli and that has cost them badly in this game. Their ground fielding was also not up to standards but it got better as the game progressed. Dilshan Madushanka gave them a brilliant start by getting rid of Rohit Sharma in the very first overs but they could build on that allowing the hosts to gain control of the game. However, it was Madushanka again who delivered the breakthroughs in the middle overs by getting the wickets of Gill and Kohli in quick succession but once again they couldn't stop the hosts from forming another partnership. They leaked too many runs at the fag end of the innings and it was looking like Madushanka versus India as he registered a fine five-wicket haul while Dushmantha Chameera got one too, and they forced two run outs in the last over, but they will need some heroes in their team to get over the line here.

After starting the innings with a boundary, India lost their skipper Rohit Sharma on the very next ball and the crowd went silent. Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill also struggled initially but both were given second chances by the Lankan fielders and they grabbed that with both hands. They were able to rotate the strike well and also did not miss out on putting away the loose balls. It was looking like that both the batters will score big as they registered their fifties but continued to score runs at a good rate. They added 189 runs for the second wicket but Gill just missed out on his first ever World Cup hundred as he departed for 92. The fans were expecting King Kohli to equal Sachin Tendulkar's record of 49 ODI hundreds but he too fell short and was dismissed for 88 and the hosts had two new batters at the crease and had to rebuild. Shreyas Iyer wasted no time and batted aggressively with KL Rahul providing good support from the other end. Iyer lost a couple of partners but continued his onslaught and smashed it all around the park. He left the park after scoring a stunning 82 off just 56 balls which included more sixes than boundaries. His knock took them closer to the 350-run mark while a nice little cameo from Ravindra Jadeja took them past that and helped them reach a massive total.

Another fantastic batting performance from India! They have used the batting conditions really well here at Wankhede and ended up with 357 runs with excellent knocks from Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer. The Lankans will be disappointed with their effort as they know they could have done better but now have an uphill task if they want to get anything out of this game.

We are done with the national anthems and it is now time for the action to get underway. Some last words being spoken by Kusal Mendis in the Sri Lankan huddle before they spread out to take their respective field positions. A loud cheer from the Mumbai crowd as the local boy Rohit Sharma strides out to the centre with his opening partner, Shubman Gill. It will be Dilshan Madushanka to start the proceedings with the new ball for Sri Lanka. He is starting with two slips in place. Off we go...

We are moments away from the start of this clash, but before that, the match officials and the players, along with their mascots, will line up for the national anthems. They are joined by the UNICEF and ICC Ambassadors Sachin Tendulkar and Muthiah Muralidaran. It will be Sri Lanka's national anthem first followed by the national anthem of India.

The skipper of India, Rohit Sharma says that they would have batted first anyway. Shares that it looks like a good pitch but feels that there will be some assistance at the start. Reckons that it will be nice for seamers to bowl under lights. Mentions that it is a great honour and a good moment for him to captain India where he has grown up. States that they thrive on getting better as a team and it is important for them to not get carried away. Adds that it is important to stay balanced and tick boxes again and again. Informs that they are going with the same team as the last game.

Sri Lanka's captain, Kusal Mendis says that they will bowl first. Mentions that the wicket looks great and feels that it looks a good wicket to bat second. Feels that they have done really well in the last couple of matches. States that the remaining three games are important for them and hopes that everyone can give their best. Informs that Dushan Hemantha comes into the side in place of Dhananjaya de Silva.

India (Unchanged Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis (C/WK), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Angelo Mathews, Dushan Hemantha (In place of Dhananjaya de Silva), Maheesh Theekshana, Kasun Rajitha, Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka.

TOSS - Rohit Sharma flips the coin and Kusal Mendis calls it right. Sri Lanka have elected to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Michael Atherton says that it is hot but it is not unbearable like it was during the England-South Africa clash. Adds that the square boundaries are 64m and 69m respectively while the straight boundaries are 76m. Ricky Ponting joins him and says that there is a bit of shine and that means it will not slow down as the game progresses. Tells that that the challenge for the bowlers will be to hit the hard length which will be difficult to put away. Reckons that the pitch is full of runs and the captain winning the toss should look to bat first.

ICYMI, as part of the joint initiative by the ICC and UNICEF, this game between India and Sri Lanka will be celebrated as a 'One Day 4 Children' fixture. Through 'One Day 4 Children' and the #BeAChampion campaign, both organisations aim to communicate the message of creating equal opportunities for girls and boys.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, suffered a disappointing loss to the Afghans where they were completely outplayed. Their batting has been a bit of a concern with only Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama contributing most of the runs but they will need a lot of support from others. Their opening partnership is not a settled one but getting Angelo Mathews in the team has provided them a good balance in the side. Dilshan Madushanka has been their best bowler with his ability to swing the new ball both ways while Maheesh Theekshana can be dangerous to the Indian batters. They will surely remember that humiliation in the Asia Cup and will turn up with more firepower to avenge that defeat. Will they hand the hosts their first loss? Or will the Men in Blue continue on their merry way? We will find out soon. Toss and team news in a bit.

India have been the team to beat in this tournament and are still undefeated. Their batting has been amazing with either Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma or KL Rahul all stepping up whenever the team needed them. They will be a bit concerned with the form of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer but that hasn't affected them that much till now. Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav have been absolutely fantastic with the ball getting crucial breakthroughs at different phases of the game while Mohammed Shami who wasn't getting a game has picked up nine wickets in just two games and will look to add to his tally. Mohammed Siraj has been a bit inconsistent but he will remember his magnificent spell against the Lankans in the Asia Cup and will hope to get back in form. They are a well-rounded unit once again be the favourites to win this game.

Hello and a warm welcome folks! The Wankhede Stadium is ready to host Sri Lanka in what is going to be a repeat of the 2011 ODI World Cup final. The Men in Blue will want to recreate that historic moment to confirm their spot in the semi-finals while the Lankans will hope that they become the first side to defeat India and keep their campaign alive.

... MATCH DAY ...

The iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is yet again the venue for a World Cup game and this time, it will be the rematch of that historical 2011 World Cup final game that took place on the very same ground. Yes, you guessed it correctly, it is India taking on Sri Lanka in Match number 33 of the tournament. The host nation, India, have been perfect thus far in the competition, winning 6 out of 6 but were challenged in the first half of their previous game by a lacklustre England side. Batting first for the very first time in the competition, the Indian top order collapsed with only skipper Rohit Sharma standing out and thanks to a breezy inning by Suryakumar Yadav they trickled their way to 229 runs. The bowling however was on fire yet again with Jasprit Bumrah leading from the front and the spinners proving to be as consistent as ever. But, it has been the addition of Mohammed Shami that has added to the wicket-taking ability of the attack and he has picked up 9 wickets in just 2 games so far. The likes of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer haven't quite fired yet in this competition and their form could be crucial heading into the knockout stages but overall, India look unlikely to be stopped anytime soon. Sri Lanka on the other hand are all but out of the competition but a win against the best side in the tournament would certainly give them half a chance of making it through to the semifinals. After being on the wrong end of their first three matches, the Lankan lions roared and picked up a couple of big wins but in their last game against Afghanistan which was virtually a shootout for a chance at the semifinals, they crumbled once again. The inclusion of Dimuth Karunaratne up top didn't work as the opener failed to make an impact and the loss of Lahiru Kumara due to an injury proved to be quite fatal as their bowling lacked that wicket-taking ability. Dushmantha Chameera who came in as Kumara's replacement bowled fairly well but overall, it was a disappointing game with both bat and ball for the Lankans and they were blown away by Afghanistan. The last time these two sides met wasn't much long ago in the Asia Cup final and it was Mohammed Siraj who ripped through the Lankan batting order with a six-wicket haul and Sri Lanka barely got over the 50-run mark. With prior losses in mind and the pressure of being knocked out of the competition, Sri Lanka will look to find some sort of inspiration and do what no other team has managed to do thus far and that is to defeat India. The hosts on the other hand will look to keep winning and ensure that they do not lose momentum going into the business end of the group stage. Can Sri Lanka pull off a shock win here? Or will India continue on their merry way?
