That's all we have from this match. The second game is already underway and Hyderabad have put 62 runs on the board in six overs for the loss of two wickets. You can now switch tabs to catch all the action. Cheers!

Joshua Little is adjudged the Player of the Match. The young pacer says that he tried to keep it simple on this pitch and maintain good lines. Adds that he was nervous in the first game of the season but he has now settled in nicely. Shares that keeping simple and smashing hard lengths are very important.

Hardik Pandya, the captain of Gujarat, starts by praising Joshua Little and Noor Ahmad and feels that they got them back into the game. Adds that as a group they are trying to win games in difficult situations. Staying humble and playing good cricket is the key, adds Pandya. Praises Shankar as well and calls him a fitter player and is expecting a lot of similar knocks from him.

Presentation time...

David Miller (32* off 18 balls) says that it was a great win and praises the batters up front for setting a good platform. He is very impressed with the way Shankar batted and mentions that it was nice to watch him from the other end. Tells that they stick to their process and he feels that they have got a good balance in the team. Adds that they try to stay calm and the confidence keeps on building after winning such games. Shares that his plan with Shankar was to bat deep and rebuild by playing good shots. Praises Joshua Little for his bowling effort and is impressed with his lines. States that the atmosphere here at Eden Gardens is spectacular and it was a privilege for him to bat at this venue.

Nitish Rana, the captain of Kolkata, says that they were 20-25 runs short and regrets dropping the catches. Adds that the batting didn't fare well and only Gurbaz and Russell managed to score runs. Shares that the plan was to pick early wickets. Admits that they failed to maintain the pressure in the middle overs and again rues their fielding effort. Feels that they need to improve in all the departments. Further says that winning the little moments in the game matters a lot.

Earlier, it was only Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Andre Russell who put up a strong show with the bat as the rest of the Kolkata batting unit flopped. For Gujarat, Mohammad Shami was very impressive, claiming three wickets and the likes of Joshua Little and Noor Ahmad also fared exceedingly well - the main reason Gujarat managed to pull things back.

At Eden Gardens, a target of 180 was about par and the hosts needed early wickets to put the strong batting department of Gujarat under pressure. Although they did keep the scoring rate under check and once they dismissed both Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya in quick succession, Kolkata had the upper hand. However, after the second Strategic Break, Gujarat decided to press on the accelerator and it paid off. Both Vijay Shankar and David Miller went berserk and Kolkata were left with no answers. Miller also got a reprieve as he was dropped by Suyash Sharma but that said, the way Shankar exploded, that dropped catch would not have made much of a difference.

Easy win in the end for Gujarat! Things got a bit tough but they managed to channel their best in the middle order to overcome the challenge. Vijay Shankar and David Miller emerged as the saviours for the them and the former, in particular, showed again that he has worked immensely on his power-hitting. With this win, Gujarat shoot to the top of the points table.

Commentary

We are back for the chase!  The Kolkata players can be seen in a huddle near the boundary ropes. Now, they spread out to take their respective field positons. Gujarat use their Impact Player as Shubman Gill replaces Mohit Sharma and strides along with Wriddhiman Saha to open for them. Kolkata also use their Impact Player as Suyash Sharma comes in for Venkatesh Iyer. Harshit Rana to start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Kolkata have posted a good total but they will surely feel they are 15-20 runs short and they will need their bowlers to step up big time if they are to defend it. Gujarat has a long batting line-up and they will be confident to gun this total down. Nevertheless it is going to be an exciting chase. Let's see how it unfolds.

Andre Russell is up for a quick chat. He says that he is feeling good and is a bit unhappy with the total on the board but reckons they have the bowlers to defend it. Adds that they should have got to 190-200 and have only themselves to blame. On playing his 100th game for Kolkata, he says that it is an amazing feeling and the crowd is outstanding and mentions that it is like a family.

Gujarat, on the other hand were a bit hot and cold as there were moments they went for a few runs but were also able to pull things back in the middle by picking up wickets at crucial times. Rashid Khan had an off day on his 100th game as he conceded 54 runs in his four overs and Hardik Pandya was expensive too. However, Joshua Little and Noor Ahmad got them back in the game in with incredible spells in the middle overs. Both of them picked up a couple of wickets each as well. Mohammad Shami was brilliant as usual and was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets.

Kolkata got off to a decent start with Narayan Jagadeesan playing a few lusty blows before getting out plumb in front. Rahmanullah Gurbaz looked in great touch from the start and he continued to rack up runs on one end. The move to promote Shardul Thakur at number 3 failed miserably as he got out on a duck and Nitish Rana and Venkatesh Iyer also couldn't make any sort of impact. However, Gurbaz did not let that effect him and maintained the scoring rate by taking on every bowler especially his countrymen, Rashid Khan. He scored 81 runs off just 39 balls missed out on his hundred which was there for the taking. Rinku Singh played less than a run-a-ball 19 which somewhat slowed down their innings along with losing wickets in clumps which has been a problem for them. In the end, a quick-fire cameo from birthday boy, Andre Russell of 34 off just 19 balls took them to a fighting total.

A good battle between bat and ball comes to an end! We saw some great batting from Rahmanullah Gurbaz at first and then the raw power of Dre-Russ at the death. However, Gujarat did well to squeeze the game in the middle overs and are slightly ahead in the game at the moment.

Strategic break. It's been a decent reply from Gujarat so far. They have not set the stage on fire but have Shubman Gill who is yet again looking in sublime form. All he needs is support from the other end and this could be an easy chase for the visiting team. Kolkata have done well to keep the scoring rate in check but they will need wickets to peg Gujarat back. The required rate is a little above 9 which is very much manageable in this format.

The good news is that the sun is slowly but surely coming out of the clouds and as we speak, the covers are also starting to come off. Hopefully, we get the game started soon but for now, the start has been delayed. Stay tuned for further updates.

Nitish Rana, the skipper of Kolkata says that he would have liked to bat first and mentions that yes, there are clouds but they still wanted to bat first. Adds that unfortunately they are being forced to make changes in the team with Umesh Yadav and Jason Roy out of the team and Harshit Rana and Rahmanullah Gurbaz coming in. Ends by saying that they always hope for two points and will do their best to get them.

Gujarat's captain, Hardik Pandya says that they will bowl first. Adds that they thought about bowling first because of the overcast conditions. Tells that he is happy with the performance and they need to play good cricket and qualify for playoffs. Informs they are unchanged.

It is centurions day in Kolkata as Andre Russell is playing his 100th match for Kolkata that too on his birthday, a really happy moment for him. The likes of Rashid Khan and Nitish Rana are set to make their 100th appearance in the Indian T20 League.

Gujarat, on the other hand have played like defending champions and they are in a pretty comfortable position on the points table. They have a very well-balanced team and they have won matches chasing as well as defending a low total where they looked completely down and out. They have a good mixture of youth and experience and Hardik Pandya has led them well and used the resources efficiently. They will hope that they settle the scores against Kolkata in this game. Let's see who comes out on top. Toss and team news in a bit.

Kolkata have suffered from inconsistency as they have won only three games in this season. Their batting has been decent with most players playing some decent knocks, but they must perform collectively. Also, Andre Russell will need to contribute more in the batting department. Their most worrying thing is their pace bowling which is one of the expensive units so far and they will need to address it quickly if they want to go far in this tournament and also if they want to get the better of Gujarat again.

Hello and a warm welcome folks. The action now has moved to the historic Eden Gardens where Kolkata will clash against Gujarat. The last time these two sides met it was Rinku Singh who wrote his name in the history books and Kolkata will be hoping for something similar at their home while Gujarat will certainly want to avenge their heartbreaking defeat.

... MATCH DAY ...

Can you believe it? We are already midway through the 2023 Indian T20 League and the points table is segregated into 3-4 different zones with all teams still having a chance of making it through to the playoffs. In Match number 39, it will be Kolkata going on against Gujarat at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This is the return fixture of the famous game at the Narendra Modi Stadium where Rinku Singh hit five sixes in a row in the final over to heroically win the game for Kolkata and Yash Dayal was on the receiving end of that massacre. Currently, the reigning champions are higher on the table than their opponents and will be out for revenge. They have 5 wins from 7 games and they put on a big performance against Mumbai last time around. The batting seems in fine form with Shubman Gill remaining consistent throughout and someone or the other stepping up to support him from the other end. The bowling has been in great form as well with spearhead Mohammad Shami and Hardik Pandya getting the ball to talk early on and the spin duo of Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad wreaking havoc in the middle overs. Mohit Sharma has been like a breath of fresh air as he is their death-over specialist and has been doing a fine job at it. Kolkata were on a run of four defeats and were in a downward spiral but then they went up against Bangalore and just like in their first meeting this season, Kolkata scored 200-plus runs and then were able to defend it as well. The inclusion of Jason Roy in the playing XI has been a big positive for them and with the likes of Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh all in good form, their batting seems pretty strong. It is the pace bowling that has been their weakest area so far and even though the spin duo of Varun Chakaravarthy and Suyash Sharma has done well, Sunil Narine has looked off-color. They need the likes of Umesh Yadav and Andre Russell to deliver more consistently if they are to have a chance against teams that play spin well. The match-up does favour Gujarat more than it does Kolkata but at Eden Gardens, the fans can make a lot of difference. Can Kolkata notch up back-to-back wins and derail the reigning champions? Or will Gujarat avenge their defeat in the reverse fixture? We shall find out.
