Time for some interviews...

Lucknow used their sixth opening pair in this edition when they were asked to bat first after losing the toss but Karan Sharma could not make much of an impact. A 41-run partnership between Quinton de Kock and Prerak Mankad gave them a good start but they lost wickets in quick succession and had 73 runs on the board with half their side back in the shed. Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran began building a partnership and put on 74 runs together in 47 deliveries with the latter reaching his half-century. Sunil Narine, Shardul Thakur, and Vaibhav Arora claimed two wickets each for the hosts with Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy chipping in with one but they would have liked to restrict their opponents to 10-15 runs lesser.

By the end of the Powerplay, it seemed to be like Lucknow were well-behind in the game. Their new ball bowlers could not get them an early breakthrough and it was Krishnappa Gowtham who drew first blood in the sixth over of the inning. Ravi Bishnoi sent the Kolkata skipper packing as he was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets while conceding just 23 runs in his four overs. Krunal Pandya claimed a crucial wicket on the last ball of his spell and was economical as well. Yash Thakur proved to be a good choice as an Impact Player as he claimed two important wickets but along with Naveen-ul-Haq took quite a pounding from Rinku Singh. They will want to improve their bowling in the Powerplay and the death overs if they want to go deep in the qualifying stage.

The hosts came out all guns blazing as they looked to make a mockery of the run chase. They scored 61 runs in Powerplay with Venkatesh Iyer the only causality after getting off to a good start. Nitish Rana could not get going having promoted himself to number 3 but Jason Roy had no trouble keeping the scoreboard ticking as he made 45 in 28 balls. After the two of them were dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz struggled at the wicket as he ate up deliveries and allowed the required rate to rise again. Andre Russell’s disappointing campaign continued and Shardul Thakur could not make an impact with the bat this time. Rinku Singh had the crowd believing right till the end getting to his highest score in the Indian T20 League accumulating 67 runs in 33 balls but his efforts were in vain.

Rinku Singh is turning out to be quite a player! The southpaw kept this game alive right till the end but once again his side left him with too much to do and he was unable to get them over the finish line by the closest of margins. Lucknow have sealed an important win that confirms their place in the playoffs in third place and there is now just one spot up for grabs on the final day of the group stages. Kolkata could not end this tournament on a high and will want to come back strong in the next season.

Commentary

We are back for Kolkata's reply. The Lucknow players are seen in a huddle near the ropes. The two Kolkata openers make their way out to the middle followed by the Lucknow players. Jason Roy and Venkatesh Iyer will open the innings for Kolkata. Lucknow bring on Yash Thakur as their Impact Player, replacing Karan Sharma. It will be Mohsin Khan to start with the new ball for Lucknow. Off we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Kolkata will be disappointed that they allowed Lucknow to make a comeback into the game but need to start afresh to chase down this total. On the other hand, Lucknow have the momentum and will be the happier of the two sides at the halfway mark. Can their bowlers defend this total and by doing so, secure their side a playoff berth? We shall find out shortly. Back in a bit for the chase...

Sunil Narine is in for a chat. He says it is a good cricket pitch if you can apply yourself. Informs that there is a bit of spin on offer on this wicket but need to bowl slower in the air. Explains that he uses his change of pace depending on the situation of the game and he tries to see what the best option for him is. Reckons that it is a good pitch and they have conceded 15-20 runs more than they would have liked but feels if they play well in the Powerplay, they can achieve the target. Ends by saying that there is no dew and it is pretty dry.

For Kolkata, it was Harshit Rana who set the tone early, striking in his second over. The hosts did manage to keep the runs in check but they let it slip in the last two overs of the Powerplay. They pulled things back nicely after Powerplay and reduced Lucknow to 73-5. At that stage, Kolkata were bossing the game and were on course to keep Lucknow to a par total. Things did not pan out as expected and they were unable to finish well, conceding 43 runs in the last three overs. Sunil Narine was back at his usual best with figures of 2 for 28 from his four overs.

Krishnappa Gowtham's late flourish helps Lucknow finish on a high and end up with a challenging total on the board! After Nitish Rana won the toss and put Lucknow into bat, they were dealt an early blow in the form of Karan Sharma. Prerak Mankad and Quinton de Kock took their time initially but started finding boundaries once they got their eye in. However, Mankad's dismissal just after Powerplay triggered a mini-collapse for the visitors. Nicholas Pooran provided his side with much-needed impetus and formed a 74-run stand with Ayush Badoni. Towards the end, Krishnappa Gowtham's quickfire cameo helped his side cross the 175-run mark.

Hello and a warm welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to our coverage of match number 68 of the 2023 Indian T20 League, where Kolkata go up against Lucknow at the Eden Gardens. This promises to be a cracker of a game between two sides jostling for a spot in the playoffs.

... MATCH DAY …

We have reached that phase of the competition where the final pieces of the puzzle are set to fall in the group stages of the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League. While some teams are in a position where they have fate in their own hands, others are dependent on results to go in their favor to have a sniff at making it to the playoffs. We arrive at match number 68 where two sides facing similar contrasting situations clash against each other in the quest to keep their tournament hopes alive. Kolkata welcome Lucknow to the Eden Gardens in the City of Joy and the hosts will be hoping for a comprehensive win before waiting for the results on Sunday to see if they make it through to the next round. They have six wins in 13 games and will need both Mumbai and Delhi to lose their final games to come level on points with them, so they will also be playing this encounter with net run-rate in mind. If Mumbai and Delhi do lose their fixture, Lucknow will qualify irrespective of the result in this game as no other team will be able to get more than the 15 points they have. However, they will be eager to win this game and confirm their position in the top four with their own performance having started the tournament strong. A slight stumble around the time they lost their regular skipper KL Rahul had them slightly worried but wins in the last two games have put them back in a position of strength in terms of the standings on the table. Quinton de Kock has cemented his place into the side as he looks to be in good form and has been solid with the gloves but Kyle Mayers lost his place in the team to accommodate Naveen-ul-Haq as an overseas option in the bowling department. Deepak Hooda was assigned the task of opening the inning last time around and that experiment did not work but there has been consistency from their middle order comprising Marcus Stoinis, Ayush Badoni, Krunal Pandya, and Nicholas Pooran. Mohsin Khan seems to be hitting his stride after returning from injury but it is Yash Thakur who has been given the responsibility of bowling in the death overs and has an uncanny ability to pick up crucial wickets. Ravi Bishnoi and Krunal Pandya spearhead the spin bowling unit with Amit Mishra used in rotation and he could have a role to play on the Eden Gardens wicket. Kolkata looked down and out at one stage as they were dependent on the excellence of individual players to help them win their handful of games at the start. They have managed to gel together better recently and three wins in the last four matches have helped them keep their qualification hopes alive. Jason Roy has been instrumental in their turn of fortunes but Rahmanullah Gurbaz has faded away a fraction after his explosive start. The home side will want these two to fire in this encounter as they look for a quick start to their inning and that will allow their potent middle order of Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, and Andre Russell to play freely. They will once again want to test their opponent with a barrage of spin as Varun Chakaravarthy, Sunil Narine, and Suyash Sharma can all be a handful on their day. Harshit Rana has accepted the responsibility of being the frontline pace bowler with open arms and the management seems to be backing the talent of Vaibhav Arora. The two teams have not faced each other in this edition so far and they will need to analyze each other at the earliest as this could be their last chance going forward. Will Lucknow seal a crucial win and cement their spot in the top four? Or will Kolkata continue to come from behind and put themselves in a position to sneak through to the playoffs? We will find out soon.
