Right then, Mumbai's two-game winning streak at the Wankhede in this edition of the Indian T20 League has ended and with that win, Chennai become the team to defeat Mumbai the most number of times at this venue, with 5 wins, joint highest along with Punjab. Another week of stellar cricketing action has flown by and things are starting to heat up. Next up, the new week kicks off with a clash between Bengaluru and Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Monday, 15 April. That game will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) but you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up. Till then, take care and goodbye!

Matheesha Pathirana is the Player of the Match for his exceptional bowling performance of 4 for 28 in 4 overs. Pathirana says that he was nervous but MS Dhoni came to him and asked him to keep calm and that helped him. Adds that he doesn't mind getting hit and he only thinks about his execution and if he executes well, he will get the rewards. Adds that sometimes he has to change his gameplan and adds that he had a niggle over the last 2 weeks but the staff supported him and he was able to perform in this match.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, the skipper of Chennai says their young wicket-keeper who scored three sixes made a big difference. He adds that it's important to get 10-15 more runs on this kind of wicket, they bowled well but they were happy with the score. Tells that they would have taken Mumbai's Powerplay score any day. Shares on this kind of pitch, it demand skills from both bat and ball. Mentions Matheesha Pathirana, their 'baby Malinga,' bowled exceptionally well. Reckons Ajinkya Rahane was carrying a niggle so it was better for him to open and as a captain, he was happy to come down the lineup.

The Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Hardik Pandya won the toss and had no hesitation in bowling first and it seemed like a good decision as Gerald Coetzee got Ajinkya Rahane out pretty early. Chennai had a slowish Powerplay but started to fire and once they lost the wicket of Rachin Ravindra, the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube took full flight. Both scored quick half-centuries and the skipper kept on batting till the end. Jasprit Bumrah was yet again impressive for Mumbai and bowled well at the death too but Hardik Pandya opted to bowl the final over himself and even got a wicket but then went on to concede 20 runs in the final 4 deliveries which eventually was the margin of defeat for Mumbai. It was vintage hitting from MS Dhoni that caused the damage as he hammered three maximums in a row to begin with and picked up a couple of more runs off the final ball. In reply, Mumbai wasted a fine start and one can't help but think that the hitting from MSD in that final over could well be the telling difference.

Shardul Thakur is now down for a chat. Thakur says that Mumbai vs Chennai is known for producing quality cricket and a few individuals did brilliantly but they held their nerve better. Adds that they spoke about keeping it simple and bowling according to the field and not trying to be too smart and it was the same pitch as the last match and when the pitch is repeated here, the slower ones hold better. He then gives credit to the way Matheesha Pathirana bowled and reckons there wasn't much dew in this game and he felt that Rohit Sharma was batting really well and wanted to be brave and make him hit to the bigger side.

Hardik Pandya, the skipper of Mumbai says it was a gettable score but credits Chennai who bowled really well.  Adds Matheesha Pathirana made the difference and overall Chennai were very smart with their plans. Shares there is a man behind the stumps for Chennai who was handling well. Reckons they were on course through to chase it down before Pathirana struck twice in his first over. On not giving the spinners many overs, Pandya says it was slightly about the match-up but he went with what he felt was right. Adds that they are on the road for the next four games, they want to play good cricket and play with the same intensity.

Mumbai will be disappointed with that loss as they let things slip after being in a dominant position both with the bat and earlier with the ball as well. They should have restricted Chennai to about 190 runs but conceded 15 runs or so more and then with the bat, they left too many runs for the death overs. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan put on 70 runs before Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav got out in the space of 3 deliveries. Rohit went on to score a half-century and Tilak Varma reignited the chase with a quickfire cameo. However, Hardik Pandya pushed himself up the order and couldn't get going at all and got out before Tim David hit a couple of sixes and went back as well. Rohit found it difficult to time the ball in the final few overs and faced only 20 balls in the last eight overs scoring 31 runs before which he had scored 71 off 43 balls. But he finished with a century in a losing cause, just the third time this has happened in the history of the Indian T20 League - Yusuf Pathan against Mumbai at Braboune in 2010 and Sanju Samson against Punjab at the Wankhede in 2021 are the other two. Surprisingly, all three have been in Mumbai but Rohit is the only one who stayed unbeaten on 105.

In the battle of the Titans, it is the Yellow of Chennai that has toppled the Blue of Mumbai and with that big win, Chennai got their first points on the road and made it 4 wins out of 6 overall. Chennai were under the pump inside the Powerplay as the opening pair of Mumbai were doing some real damage. However, the introduction of Matheesha Pathirana in the 8th over, turned things around in the blink of an eye as he got two big wickets in his first over and got his side back in the game. Chennai once again let another partnership build before Ruturaj Gaikwad brought Pathirana in and he yet again delivered with a wicket. This was well backed up by the likes of Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande who went for just 5 runs combined in their final overs. In the end, Mustafizur Rahman got hit but got David out and then Pathirana closed things out well.

Commentary

We are back. The Chennai players are out in the middle. Matheesha Pathirana comes in for Ajinkya Rahane as the Impact Player. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan to open for Mumbai. Tushar Deshpande to bowl first.

...THE CHASE...

You see a score above 200 and feel wow what a score but then you see it is Wankhede and you feel it's a par one! Chennai have the momentum but Mumbai have chased down around 200 in their last game. They again have to do it. Can the openers lay the foundation yet again? Let's find out after the break.

Gerald Coetzee is up for a chat. He says that the score is about par and the wicket is very good and the dew has set in as well. Adds that they learned from the previous game and tried to use the big side. On Bumrah, he says that he is the best in the world and it is great to learn from him. Mentions that the exciting part is that you keep learning and not everytime things go your way and ends by saying that he is loving the experience.

Hardik Pandya resisted to give an over to the spinners when Shivam Dube and Ruturaj Gaikwad were batting. Shreyas Gopal had a fairly decent last game but bowled just one over today. The seamers were going for plenty but there was no change in bowling from the captain for most of the time. As usual, Jasprit Bumrah was at his best, the pick of the lot while the others went for runs. Mumbai may feel, they missed a trick or two with bowling changes but the damage is already done now.

A total carnage from Chennai and they'll be reasonably happy where they stand right now. Mumbai won the toss and asked Chennai to bat first. Ajinkya Rahane opened along with Rachin Ravindra but the former didn't make much impact. Ruturaj Gaikwad though did play a vital knock as he and Ravindra did build a stand to add 52 runs between them. Rachin Ravindra struggled to hit but then came the partnership which Chennai were looking for. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube made havoc as they dealt in boundaries and scored more than 10-15 per over on plenty of occasions. Both of them scored fifty but it was MSD's magic that helped Chennai get over 200. A lot of fans' entry penny got worth when MS Dhoni walked out but his three sixes in the last four balls made a massive impact on the course of the game.

Ishan Kishan with a vital hand on it and they will get two runs! Hardik Pandya goes into the pitch now and bowls it around off stump, MS Dhoni mistimes the pull off the back foot and gets an inside edge past the stumps. The ball goes to the left of the keeper who dives and gets his gloves on it. The ball rolls toward fine leg for a couple of runs and Chennai finish with 206/4 on the board!

19.56

SIX! A hat-trick of sixes from the legend himself and the crowd is going wild. Hardik Pandya is being pummeled here and the 200 comes up for Chennai as well. A poor delivery really as Pandya serves a juicy full toss on the legs, Dhoni just swings across the line and dumps it into the stands over deep square leg. Already 24 off the over and there's one ball remaining.

19.46

SIX! Wow, that was hit hard! Fractionally short and around off, MS Dhoni leans back this time and muscles the ball flat and between deep mid-wicket and long on for back-to-back sixes.

19.36

SIX! The decibel levels are at a max after that shot! A juicy length ball right in the slot around off and MS Dhoni just hits through the line of the ball and smokes it a long way over long off for a biggie.

19.2W

OUT! CAUGHT! Top catch from Mohammad Nabi in the deep and Hardik Pandya gets his man. Tries to go full and outside off, Daryl Mitchell shuffles across the off stump and tries to power it over long on but hits it flat towards the long on fence where Nabi grabs it around his head. Mitchell was struggling a bit with his timing and now has to depart.

MSD walks to the crease. He has four balls to make an impact.

19.21wd

WIDE! Full and wide, a bit too wide even considering the fact that Daryl Mitchell is standing on or past the off stump. Pandya isn't convinced and challenges the call once again. The third umpire concludes that the batter is standing outside off stump but the ball is still pretty wide and out of his reach.

19.14

FOUR! Powered down the ground! Slower delivery, bowled back of a length and outside off, Daryl Mitchell was waiting for it and is able to get across the off stump and whack it back over the bowler's head for a boundary.

19.11wd

WIDE! Length ball, pushed wide of the off stump, Daryl Mitchell fails to reach it and a wide is called. There is a late review from Pandya challenging the wide call. The replays roll in and the third umpire concludes that the ball out of the batter's reach and it will stay a wide.

Hardik Pandya to bowl the final over. Akash Madhwal had one over but the skipper believes he can do the job.

18.61

Just another single to end! Full and straight at the stumps, Daryl Mitchell mistimes the straight drive off the toe end of the bat but manages to get it past the bowler for a single.

18.51

The level of consistency from Jasprit Bumrah here is unparalleled! Another yorker at the toes at over 1544 clicks, Dube manages to get the front leg out of the way and hits it down to long on for a run.

18.41

Nice and full, tailing back into the stumps, hit away firmly down to long on for one more.

18.32

Cheeky but effective from Daryl Mitchell. Another quick yorker at the stumps, Mitchell shuffles across to the leg side and reverse-ramps it over the keeper's head for a couple of runs as the man from fine leg is able to cut it off.

18.21

That is perfection! Steams in and nails the yorker at 144 clicks, this one is bowled from around the wicket and angles into middle and leg. Shivam Dube can only toe-end it down to long on for one more.

18.11

A full toss, tailing back into off stump and just dipping a bit as well, Daryl Mitchell can't get under it and hits it straight down to long off for a single.

FOUR! Gerald Coetzee was playing with fire there and Shivam Dube does get the boundary, albeit a streaky one. Banged in short and over leg stump, pace on this time and Diube just goes at it. The ball takes the top edge and flies down to fine leg for four runs.

17.50

Brings out the slower bumper and bowls it around leg stump, cramping Dube for room. Dube tries to angle the pull shot away but misses and gets hit on the body.

The ball has lost its shape and the umpire wants it to change. A slight halt in play.

17.41

Length ball outside off stump, Daryl Mitchell pushes it down to long on for a single.

17.32

Oh, dear! An overthrow and that is sloppy from Mumbai. Takes pace off and bowls it full and outside off, Daryl Mitchell gets across and hits it to long on for one and Mohammad Nabi fires in a casual throw at the keeper's end and Ishan Kishan is beaten by a bad bounce which allows the second run.

17.21lb

Leg bye! Lucky! Goes full and on the pads again, there to be hit. Dube swings at it but misses and the ball thuds off the pads to fine leg as they get a leg bye.

17.14

FOUR! Flicked away with ease and Gerald Coetzee is under pressure right away. A full toss on the pads, Shivam Dube picks it up nd flicks it over backward square leg for a boundary.

Gerald Coetzee is back on.

It's not just happening for Rohit Sharma and Mumbai! A bumper, around off. Rohit Sharma waits to play the map shot but misses it. What an over from Tushar Deshpande. Incredible turnaround from the bowling team.

15.51

A length ball, around off, Tim David nudges it to deep mid-wicket for a single.

15.40

Starts with a swing and a miss! Short ball, outside off, in the arc for Tim David to pull but misses.

Strategic Break! This has been some turnaround for Chennai after they faced an early onslaught but the captaincy has been good and the bowlers have executed their plans to the tee. Mumbai have lost a lot of momentum with the fall of a further couple of wickets and Rohit Sharma needs more of the strike. With Matheesha Pathirana still having a couple of overs up his sleeve and already having taken 3 wickets in the game, one would bet on Chennai from here. However, Mumbai have the firepower but need one really big over to get back on track. With that said, Tim David walks out to bat.

15.3W

OUT! TAKEN! The frustration leads to a wicket. Bangs it short but bowls into the surface, takes the pace off and Hardik Pandya had to generate a low of power but he fails. It goes straight to deep mid-wicket where Ravindra Jadeja takes it. Excellent last few overs by Chennai.

14.50

Would you believe it? A fourth dot ball and Shardul Thakur is in the zone here. Hardik Pandya has challenged the decision for a wide call here. Slower ball from Shardul, on a good length and flirting with the tramline outside off, Pandya gets across a bit and swings at it but fails to connect. The replays show that the ball was within Pandya's reach and it will be a dot ball.

14.40

A third dot in the over! Hard length wide of the off stump, Hardik Pandya stays put and hits it straight to covers.

14.31

OUT! TAKEN! A brilliant catch from Shardul Thakur and Matheesha Pathirana has done it again! Takes pace off just a bit and bowls it at 139 clicks, into the wicket and over middle and off stump. Tilak Varma is a bit early in the swing and ends up just chipping it straight up over wide mid off. Shardul runs back and takes a fine catch over his shoulders and keeps hold of the ball on the tumble. Varma was looking really good but Pathirana has broken the stand and gets his third wicket.

Mitchell was struggling a bit with his timing and now has to depart.

What a comeback over from Hardik Pandya, just 2 runs and a wicket off it as well. A well-directed slower bumper, right around the back shoulder and Shivam Dube miscues the pull completely. The ball lobs up off the gloves and falls short of Jasprit Bumrah at short fine leg.

15.51

Banged in a bit short and over off and middle, Daryl Mitchell pulls it away while leaning back and straight to deep mid-wicket for a single.

Strategic Break! Mumbai need to gulp some drinks as they have taken some serious beating from Ruturaj Gaikwad and Dube. Hardik Pandya though has broken the stand and it is time to limit the damage. Chennai have 28 more balls to play and plenty of batting still to come. More than 200 has to be their aim. Daryl Mitchell walks to the middle.

OUT! CAUGHT! The skipper brings himself on in a pressure situation and does the job for his side. Hardik Pandya runs in and takes pace off but bowls it on a length and pushes it wide of the off stump as well. Ruturaj Gaikwad goes after it and has to really reach for it and loses his balance. The ball is lobbed up high towards mid on where Mohammad Nabi comes in from the deep and takes a good catch. End of a fine knock from Gaikwad!

15.11

Pitches it up full and outside off stump, Shivam Dube hangs back and looks to power it over covers but ends up slicing it down to deep point for one. That brings up the FIFTY for Dube as well and this has been another high-class knock from the southpaw.

TOSS - MUMBAI have won the toss and will BOWL.

Mumbai, termed as the 'slow starters' lost the first three games but back-to-back wins at the fortress, Wankhede has boosted their confidence dearly. Their aggressive style of cricket has made headlines and we expect them to play a similar kind of cricket despite hard-fierce rivals waiting on the opposite ends. Wankhede has produced an absolute belter of the pitch in the last two games, scoring around 200 runs and we expect it to be similar today as well. The dew has played a big factor, so the toss will play a significant role as well. What do you think will happen? We will keep you updated about everything. Stay tuned for toss and other updates.

How are you feeling before the clash? As a fan or as a neutral, the excitement is almost next level as there is so much going on with both teams. After so many years in the Indian T20 League, this clash will see a change in the leadership. Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni have stepped back to hand over the reigns to Hardik Pandya and Ruturaj Gaikwad respectively and that begins a new era of the El Clasico. Both have been impressive with their captaincy. Chennai did lose two games recently but bounced back in style with an impressive win against Kolkata. They are in a pretty comfortable position with 6 points in the bag but a win here against the arch-rivals will put them in a dominating position.

Mumbai - 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020. Chennai - 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023. Five-time champions taking on five-time champions! Hello world, it is time for the El Clásico of franchise cricket to commence. It's Mumbai vs Chennai! It's the sea of blue vs the flood of yellow. The emotions are high! The stakes are high! and adrenaline? Well, it's already above the roof.

...MATCH DAY...

The 2024 edition of the cricketing extravaganza known as the Indian T20 League is in full swing and it is now time for the 'grandfather of all clashes,' as Mumbai take on Chennai in Match 29 of the competition at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. A rivalry that dates back to the very first edition and with 10 titles distributed equally between the two franchises, we sure are in for another classic. Over the years, this particular clash has provided cricketing fans all across the globe more than a few memorable games and we have seen known and unknown faces alike write their names in the history books. Talking about this particular game, both teams come into this clash on the back of a huge win against a formidable opponent which means that both sets of players will be up and ready for the big game. Mumbai come into this clash on the back of a couple of big games at home after suffering three losses to begin with and all of a sudden, they seem like the formidable unit they should be. Jasprit Bumrah has been phenomenal and in their last game against Bengaluru, he went on to pick up a five-wicket haul. The bowling does need more finesse as the likes of Akash Madhwal and Romario Shepherd haven't quite found the consistency and neither has Gerald Coetzee. Spin is their weak spot but the addition of Shreyas Gopal and Mohammad Nabi seems to have just stabilized things a bit. Talking about their batting, it is their strongest suit and the batting depth they possess to go with the hitting ability of the batters, a lot of opponents will definitely be under the pump going against them. The pairing of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan up top has been able to give the side a fast start and in the last game, Suryakumar Yadav proved once again why he has been the best of the best in this format in the last couple of years with a stellar knock of 52 runs from just 19 balls. Then there the trio of Hardik Pandya, Tim David and Romario Shepherd can do some serious damage later in the innings and the presence of Tilak Varma in the middle order gives them that added stability whilst retaining the hitting ability as well. On the other side, Chennai have played five matches so far, the same as Mumbai but have won 3 and lost 2. Chennai have won all of their home matches but have struggled away from home and given the fact that they come into the clash with at least a couple of key bowlers out due to injuries, it will surely be tough against a somewhat hostile Wankhede crowd. They did however win their previous match against a high-flying Kolkata side and they brushed them aside with ease. Mustafizur Rahman has been prolific and in the absence of Deepak Chahar and Matheesha Pathirana, a lot rides on him. The spin attack though is pretty settled with Ravindra Jadeja in full flow and the likes of Maheesh Theekshana and Rachin Ravindra doing a decent job as well. The likes of Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande do need to find more consistency if Chennai are to win on the road as well. On the batting front, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad made a well-compiled half-century in the last game and Rachin Ravindra has shown glimpses of his talent. Shivam Dube though has continued his form from the last couple of seasons and has been the difference-maker for them. Daryl Mitchell has been solid whenever required and the option to bring in MS Dhoni as a floater given the circumstances, is a big plus for them as well. Mumbai vs Chennai is always a big clash whether both teams are in form or not and given the fact that both are on a bit of a high will only add fuel to the fire. Can Mumbai continue their red-hot form at home and pick up a huge win against their rivals? Or will Chennai silence the Wankhede crowd with a special performance? We shall find out.
