Commentary

That's all, folks! A bit of a let-down, given the history between the two sides and their historical dominance in this tournament. Chennai were just far too good with the ball tonight, and Mumbai's batting order simply lacked the conviction to pull off a big chase. However, the games keep flowing thick and fast in the IPL and there's another on the cards pretty soon. On Friday, 24 April, it will be Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking on Gujarat Titans at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. That contest will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but as usual, you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye.

POTM - Sanju Samson! Samson is given the accolade for his stellar knock of an unbeaten 101 off just 54 balls. Samson starts by saying that it is always special to score a hundred at this special venue and in front of this crowd. Adds that the wicket wasn't a regular Wankhede wicket and the ball was holding, so he had to reassess his game. Mentions that the game gives you pointers on what to do, and you do not always need to come with a pre-determined mindset, and feels that it is his responsibility to read the game and mentions that if they had wickets in hand, he would have gone big sooner. Sanju says that it is a young team, but the character shown by the players, even after 3 losses, is great to see. Adds that they do know that every team is strong but they want to build on this win and enjoy such moments. Finishes off by saying that it is his first time wearing yellow at this ground and mentions that he's never seen so many people wearing yellow at the Wankhede Stadium.

The CSK skipper, Ruturaj Gaikwad - On being asked about Mukesh Choudhary and how he has been coping with the loss of his mother, Gaikwad says it takes enormous mental strength to come back and perform in such circumstances, and credits Mukesh for returning to the team, knowing they needed him. Gaikwad shares that before taking the field, the group had spoken about winning the game for him, and feels glad to do so. On being asked how the win feels, Gaikwad says it feels good before revealing that he was still uncertain at the toss, with his gut telling him to bat first despite the surface looking both a touch green and dry. He shares that the plan was to assess conditions in the opening overs, and after a quick chat with Samson, they agreed the ball was not coming on as nicely as expected and that anything around 200 would be a competitive total. He adds that Akeal and Noor bowled really well to help defend it. Points to the collective effort throughout, highlighting the cameos from Brevis and Kartik as crucial in keeping the momentum alive. He reserves special praise for Samson, calling his knock magnificent and noting that he has been in sensational touch. Gaikwad also mentions that the bowling has been improving steadily since the opening games, with the team focusing on staying calm and executing the basics. On being asked whether the spinners are the trump card or whether CSK have a well-rounded bowling attack, Gaikwad says the team is moving towards covering all bases. He points to Mukesh for setting the tone with a containing first over in the Powerplay against the likes of Suryakumar and Tilak, and praises Anshul for his consistency. About the upcoming games, Gaikwad stresses that it is back to zero from here. He says the focus will be on assessing the conditions, with a day game also coming up in quick succession.

... The Presentation ceremony ...

One man made all the difference - Earlier in the game, Chennai Super Kings were put into bat by Hardik Pandya and the CSK skipper, Ruturaj Gaikwad, got off to a rollicking start. However, AM Ghazanfar broke through on the last ball of the third over and got Mumbai back in the game. Both teams continued to throw jabs at each other but only Sanju Samson managed to stand tall. He batted through the first 20 overs and ended up with an unbeaten 101 off 54 balls, which helped CSK breach the 200-run mark. As for MI, Jasprit Bumrah bowled two top overs at the death as the likes of AM Ghazanfar and Ashwani Kumar picked up a couple of wickets each but the likes of Hardik Pandya and Krish Bhagat conceded 69 runs in between them in their 4 overs.

Here's the man of the moment - Akeal Hosein hands the Purple Cap to Anshul Kamboj and then has a quick chat with the broadcasters. He says that the wicket was offering swing as well as spin and he tried to use the conditions as best as possible. Adds that he tried to attack the stumps and felt if the batters were able to get him away, then kudos to them. Further mentions what Dwayne Bravo once said that as a spinner, you will get hit in the Powerplay and the sooner you get that out of your mind, the better it would be for them. Ends by saying that Noor Ahmad has been working hard and is really pleased to see him do well.

Let's now hear from the MI skipper - On being asked about the defeat, Hardik Pandya admits that losing too many wickets in the Powerplay put them on the back foot from the start, and concedes that they simply could not cope from that position once the damage was done. When asked whether the pitch changed in the second innings, Hardik dismisses it quickly by saying that he is not someone who likes to make that excuse. Praises CSK for batting well and says it was the same track through and through. Stresses that they just should have batted better. Says the CSK spinners got the ball to grip and turn and also adds that even their spinners bowled really well too. Praises Sanju Samson for playing an outstanding knock. Points that their batters kept on chipping in and got them to what he calls more than a decent total. Accepts that for them to chase this, they needed a good Powerplay with the bat, which they failed to achieve. On what needs to change before the next game, Pandya stresses that there will be a detailed chat when they get back to the drawing board. Details about figuring out what they need to do with clarity. Says they have a couple of days and will see what best needs to be done for the side.

MI's batting in need of a makeover - Mumbai Indians did score 199 in the last game, but that was thanks to one outstanding knock from Tilak Varma, who hit a century, while the rest of them faltered big time. The absence of Rohit Sharma is hurting them at the top but the big names in the middle order aren't doing a job either. Varma and Suryakumar Yadav made a couple of scores in the 30s, but SKY never seemed settled. Hardik Pandya and Sherfane Rutherford made a grand total of 1 run between them. No one, barring Varma and Yadav, even got into the double digits, and in the end, it was a rather sorry-looking scorecard for the other five-time champions.

Hosein rules the roost - CSK might have a few injury concerns, but the bowling attack is now starting to take shape nicely. Akeal Hosein came back into the team as an Impact Sub and repaid the faith with a stellar spell of bowling. He picked up a couple of early wickets to get the ball rolling and Mukesh Choudhary chimed in with one as well and MI were reduced to 11/3 in a jiffy. CSK had to survive one big stand after which they kept on picking up wickets throughout the innings. Hosein ended up with a four-wicket haul as Noor Ahmad also picked up a couple of wickets. All four pacers picked up a wicket each to seal a huge win against their biggest rivals.

CSK reign supreme on enemy turf - The Super Kings have done to Mumbai what Mumbai did to Gujarat Titans just a few days ago. CSK also get back to winning ways and make their way up the table as they dominate the IPL Classico and get a win over MI for the fifth time in the last 6 meetings. This is also Mumbai Indians' biggest defeat in terms of runs in the IPL.

OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! A complete dominance from CSK over their arch-rivals at Wankhede as they BEAT MI BY 103 RUNS. And according to Ravi Shastri on air, this is MI's biggest defeat in IPL history in terms of runs. Gurjapneet Singh hits the deck hard, and keeps the line of attack around the off stump. Jasprit Bumrah reaches out to run it down to deep third, but only manages a thick outside edge, offering a simple catching practice to Sanju Samson who makes no mistake. The color of joy in Mumbai is yellow as this win will do CSK's net run rate a world of good.

18.50

From around the stump now. A low full toss, outside off, 134.1 kph. Bumrah smashes it back to the bowler.

18.41

Almost a yorker on the pads. Kumar works it to long on for a single.

18.30

At pace now, full and on middle. Ashwani clears the front leg and drills it straight to Gaikwad at mid off.

18.21

Another slower ball, on off, on a length. Jasprit waits for it to arrive and guides it to deep third for a single.

18.10

Oh, how has that missed the stumps? A deceptive slower ball from Singh, fullish and on off. Jasprit Bumrah swings for the hills by clearing his front leg, but the ball zips past the outside edge and passes scarily above the off pole.

17.60

Full, outside off, Kumar tries to slash it over the cover region, but does not connect. Just 2 runs and a wicket from this over. 3-0-10-1 for Kamboj so far.

17.50

Overpitched on off, carved back to the bowler.

17.40

Chance of a run out but missed! A huge mix-up between Kumar and Bumrah, but the danger is averted for now. Full and on middle. Ashwani Kumar drills it back past the bowler. Bumrah charges and stops midway, forcing Ashwani to retreat. Brevis fires in a throw at the batting end, but misses his shy which allows Ashwani to hurry back in. Had the throw hit, Kumar was a goner for all money.

17.30

Back of a length, on top of the stumps. Ashwani swings across to pull and misses.

17.21

Full and straight, on middle. Bumrah heaves it off the inner half to mid on's right and they charge across for a single. The mid on fielder misses his shy at the bowling end and the ball hits Bumrah's left pad as he rushes to get back in.

17.21wd

WIDE! Banged it short into the wicket around leg. Bumrah misses the hook to the keeper.

Jasprit Bumrah is the last man in for Mumbai Indians.

17.1W

OUT! MISTIMED BADLY AND TAKEN! Kamboj now gets his wicket column filled as well. A slower length ball, just outside off. Shardul Thakur presses back and tries to slam it back over the bowler's head, but he is through the shot very early and toe ends towards long on. Dewald Brevis runs in off the ropes and takes a simple catch. He is not dropping those dollies. Mumbai Indians are now 100/9. CSK 1 wicket away from a resounding win.

The next batter is Ashwani Kumar.

OUT! CAUGHT! Another batter finds the fielder while hitting the ball aerially. A rib-tickler from the tall Englishman, on the leg stump line. Krish Bhagat gets inside the line to whip the length ball over deep fine leg, but fails to get enough bat on it and airs it straight to Gurjapneet Singh stationed in the deep, who takes a regulation catch. Overton has his first wicket of the evening. Mumbai Indians are 100 for 8 down now as Krish's sluggish innings is put to a halt.

16.50

Good-length delivery, around off, steered off the back foot to backward point.

16.40

Searing pace on a length, around leg. Krish Bhagat moves across in the crease and tries to help it behind with a pull, but misses.

16.30

Back of a length, around off. Bhagat blocks it off the back foot to the bowler.

16.21

Hits the length hard, does Overton, on leg. Shardul is hurried into the pull shot and gloves it to the left of the keeper. Samson makes a half-stop but the ball stays in his vicinity and the batters get across for a single. 100 UP FOR MUMBAI INDIANS!

Commentary

Welcome back for MI's reply with the bat. Gaikwad leads his troops out to the middle as the Super Kings take their spots on the field. Quinton de Kock walks out with MI's impact player, Danish Malewar, to open the innings. And it will be spin to start as Akeal Hosein will bowl the first over. QDK to face. Here we go again...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

A huge task ahead - So 208 is the magic number for the Mumbai Indians to get another two points. CSK have been here before, many times, and they know exactly what to do with a total like this. As per the on-air graphic, they have 23 wins out of 29 when defending 200 or more. And from MI's perspective, they have not been all guns blazing in the Powerplay and for such run chases, a good start in the first six is a must. A mouth-watering chase is on the other side. Please stick around.

Up for a quick word - Ashwani Kumar of MI says that back-of-a-length deliveries were holding a bit and feels that when you bowled fuller, the ball was coming onto the bat better. Feels that their batters can certainly chase down this total. On the dew, Kumar reckons that there is a bit of wind, so the dew hasn't settled in yet, but it might come in later on. On bowling to Dewald Brevis, he says that he just tried to stick to the slower bumper.

A swinging second half - CSK were motoring along at a very fair clip, but Ashwani Kumar gave Mumbai Indians a way back in. Fresh from a four-wicket haul in the previous game, he carried that form straight into this one, showing exceptional control with his short balls and pace variations, and was rewarded with the wicket of Brevis. What MI executed particularly well through this phase was keeping Samson starved of strike while chipping away at the other end. The result was a tidy 76/2 in overs 7 to 15. But Samson stood tall and unbeaten. He opened up in the final few overs and blazed his way to a century, single-handedly dragging CSK to a very respectable total, with 41 coming off the last 3 overs.

Ghazanfar controls, but CSK hold firm - A typical Wankhede surface, true enough for the batters but with just enough turn to keep the spinners interested. Samson gave CSK another explosive Powerplay, but the middle stretch brought some resistance. Gaikwad, after threatening to cut loose, was undone by Ghazanfar, who also knocked Dube out, and Santner conjured enough guile to fox Sarfaraz and send him packing. Yet at 111/3 at halfway, the Super Kings were in a healthy position, with Samson very much the engine driving this innings forward.

Sanju Samson show at Wankhede - It does not get much more competitive than this between two sides who bring out the very best in this IPL El Classico. Right from the first ball, it was a neck-and-neck fight. CSK bossed the first six, MI made a decent comeback in the middle phase, only for the Super Kings to bounce back in the last few overs to get past 200. And in the centre of it all, stood Sanju Samson, who smashed a classy century, second in yellow colours.

FOUR! What a way to finish from Sanju Samson. He notches up his 5th IPL HUNDRED as CSK finish with 207/6 on the board. Krish Bhagat goes short and bangs it in halfway down the pitch, around off. Samson hangs back, rides the bounce and pulls it aerially towards the left of the vacant square leg fence. The ball just bounces inside the ropes and Samson takes off his helmet to soak in all of the deserved applause. 16 runs come off the final over.

Has that cleared the ropes? Looks like it, but the on-field umpires want to have a look at whether it sailed all over. The replay shows that it just bounced before the ropes and tripped over. So it's a four.

19.50

A golden dot ball now. Bhagat goes for the yorker, just outside off. Samson hangs back and gets an inside edge on the attempted slog and the ball rolls to the left of short fine leg, where the fielder makes a fumbling stop.

19.46

SIX! 200 up for CSK in style. Fullish length, wide outside off, Sanju Samson lunges across and puts his hands through the shot, nailing it on the rise and over deep cover for a biggie. Samson is just one hit away now from a ton.

19.30

No run taken by Sanju. Full and just outside off, Sanju Samson goes hard at it as he swings across the line and toe-ends the ball down to long on, denying the single as well.

19.20

Oh, that's beaten the inside edge. A good-length delivery, outside off and it is the scrambled seam delivery that nips back in off the deck. Samson looks to thrash it through covers but is well beaten.

19.16

SIX! That's massive and Samson storms into the 90s. Dug in short and outside off, Sanju Samson stays back, climbs into the pull shot and clobbers it over deep mid-wicket for a biggie.

Another 200 at Wankhede loading? CSK are in touching distance of that figure. And that's a gamble from Hardik. With two overs left in his spell, he holds himself and brings Krish Bhagat to bowl the final over. He went for 15 in his only over so far.

Full and outside off, hit away down to long on for a single. 10 runs off the 19th over of the innings. Bumrah's spell comes to an end, with figures of 4-0-31-1.

18.54

FOUR! Oh, that's cheeky and nonchalant from Sanju. Pace on, full and on the leg stump, Sanju Samson takes a step across to get inside the line and just half-flicks it. The ball sails over short fine leg and goes to the fence.

18.51nb

Full again, at nearly 140 kph and trying to attack the toes. However, this one is spilled down the leg side. Wait a minute, the siren has gone off and it is a No Ball for overstepping. Free Hit loading...

18.41

Four singles in a row, Bumrah keeping things tight at the death. Slower one, full and on middle and leg, Hosein nudges it down towards mid on and turns the strike over.

18.31

Another one that is nearly in the blockhole, around middle and leg. Sanju Samson clips the very low full toss across to deep mid-wicket for just one more.

18.21

A dipping yorker now, on off, slower too at 121.8 kph. Akeal Hosein hangs back and gets an inside edge towards short fine leg for a single.

18.11

Speared in towards the leg pole, a bit too full and Samson backs away before flicking it down to deep backward square leg for one.

A brief but important cameo from Overton comes to an end. And now, CSK use their impact player option. Akeal Hosein walks in at number 8, while Kartik Sharma is subbed out. Jasprit Bumrah to bowl the penultimate. 3-0-21-1 so far are his bowling figures.

Kartik Sharma is substituted by Akeal Hosein

OUT! CAUGHT! Straight to the fielder, and Ashwani Kumar has the last laugh here. Kumar dishes out a full and wide one. Jamie Overton hangs deep and reaches out for it, slicing it with stellar timing. However, the ball travels flat and towards deep point, where Naman Dhir comes in off the ropes and pouches it with both hands around his chest. Overton's cameo comes to a halt and Kumar gets his second wicket of the game. 4-0-37-2 for Ashwani tonight. CSK are 181/6.

17.56

SIX! Down the ground and all the way for a six. Pitched up right in the slot around middle. This time Overton is waiting for it and hammers it flat back over the bowler's head for a biggie. 15 off the over with a ball remaining.

17.40

Excellently bowled again by Ashwani. A slower bumper now, at 120 kph and over middle and leg, right around helmet height. Jamie Overton looks to take on the pull but is beaten once again.

17.30

A big swing and a miss. Bowled a bit slower at 122 kph, back of a length and angled well across the right-hander. Overton stays put and swings across the line but is well beaten.

17.24

FOUR! In the air but through the gap as well. Slightly overpitched and angled across off, Jamie Overton smacks it through extra covers and picks up another boundary.

17.21wd

WIDE! Slower bumper, dug in well short and goes away wide outside the off stump as well. Called a wide.

Back of a length, on top of the stumps. Ashwani swings across to pull and misses.

Krish Bhagat gets inside the line to whip the length ball over deep fine leg, but fails to get enough bat on it and airs it straight to Gurjapneet Singh stationed in the deep, who takes a regulation catch. 13.50

Close but not close enough! Sanju Samson seemed absolutely certain, but Krish Bhagat did get his foot back in time. Flighted again, on off, drawing the batter forward. Bhagat leans for the drive but the ball turns away past the outside edge as Samson whips the bails off in a flash. Replays show that Bhagat planted his back leg before the bails lit off. NOT OUT.

Samson feels that he has stumped Krish out. Is that the 5-for for Akeal? The decision is sent to the third umpire. The replay comes up. Krish's back leg momentarily got dragged out of the crease but he is quick enough to plant it back in before Samson whips the bails off. Not Out.

13.41

Oh, in the air but well wide of the bowler. Flighted ball outside off, stops on the batter a bit. Shardul Thakur leans on to drive but ends up chipping it to the left of the bowler and through mid off for a single.

13.31

13.20

Tossed up, fuller and drifted into leg stump. Krish Bhagat makes room leg side and plays it back to the bowler.

Ian Bishop summed it up on air for MI this evening. The hosts have been floored. And with SKY dismissed, the last hope is gone too. Krish Bhagat is the next batter in. Can Akeal complete his 5-for? He still has 5 balls left in his spell.

13.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! The wickets keep tumbling down and that is surely the final nail in the Mumbai coffin. Akeal Hosein floats it up on a nagging length and angles it into the stumps. Suryakumar Yadav gets a big stride out and looks to sweep it behind square leg. Yadav does just that, but top edges it aerially and straight to deep backward square leg, where Sarfaraz Khan comes in a bit to take a comfortable catch. Hosein gets his fourth wicket of the game and CSK can see the finish line from here. MI slip down from 84/3 to 87/7.

STRATEGIC BREAK! The hosts are in deep waters in Wankhede as yellow continues to dominate blue. Barring that 73-run partnership between SKY and Tilak, nothing, absolutely nothing has gone MI's way in this chase. Just when they needed big overs to shrink that asking rate, they have lost wickets in a heap, slipping from 84/3 to 87/6. With only Suryakumar Yadav left at the crease as the recognised batter, MI will look upon him to bat out the innings. They still need 121 runs from 42 balls, which looks like a bridge too far from this stage. Akeal Hosein will bowl out. 3-1-14-3 are his bowling figures so far.

SKY is left stranded at one end, as the procession continues from the other. Santner's concussion sub, Shardul Thakur walks out to bat at number 8. A slip and a short leg in place with Noor on the cusp of a Hat Trick.

Mitchell Santner is substituted by Shardul Thakur

12.2W

OUT! TAKEN! Another one bites the dust, and that's another big wicket. Noor Ahmad keeps the length full and pushes it wide outside off, taking the ball out of the hitting arc. Sherfane Rutherford goes after it on the first ball and smacks it aerially down to the right of sweeper cover. Anshul Kamboj makes no mistake in the deep and Mumbai Indians slip to 85/6, chasing 208, and Noor is now on a hat-trick.

OUT! CHOPPED ON! Akeal Hosein comes back into the attack and strikes gold as he sends a frustrated Tilak Varma back to the hut. 11.32

Two more for SKY, he just can't seem to find the fence at the moment. Dragged length around off, holds a bit in the pitch. Yadav comes down the pitch, lifting it inside-out and wide to the right of deep cover for a couple of runs.

Mukesh Choudhary slides to his left from short fine leg and makes a half-stop, parrying the ball to the deep. They cross for a bye.

STRATEGIC BREAK! The Super Kings have a chokehold on this game right now and Mumbai Indians are 46/3 in 8 overs, going at less than run-a-ball in a chase of 208 runs. However, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma have started to build a steady stand and they will now look to accelerate through the middle phase. CSK have just used three bowlers so far with the likes of Noor Ahmad, Jamie Overton and Gurjapneet Singh all still to come. Oh, that's rushed Tilak off the deck. Just back of a length, on off and over 139 kph. Tilak Varma hangs back and the ball darts in quickly to hit him around the groin region.

3.11

Fuller than a good length, angled across off, Yadav gets well forward and pushes it on the up, to the right of mid off and for a single.

Hosein proving too hot to handle right now. 2-1-7-2 for him so far. Mukesh to continue as MI need 197 from 102 balls.

Wow, a wicket-maiden, a true rarity in T20 cricket. Floated up full on off and middle, Varma opts to block it off.

2.50

Bowled quicker at 94 clicks, a bit short and it is the arm ball that goes across the left-hander. Tilak Varma goes deep in the crease and jams it across to mid-wicket.

2.40

Flighted ball, outside off, Tilak Varma lunges and smothers the turn, blocking it to extra cover.

MI are in all sorts here at home. One of their consistent performers, Naman Dhir too walks back on a duck. And fresh off a century, Tilak Varma is the next batter in at number 5.

2.3W

OUT! TIMBER! Another one bites the dust and Mumbai Indians are in tatters here. Tossed up by Akeal Hosein, drifted in towards middle and leg. Naman Dhir clears the front leg to have a swipe across the line but the ball grips and turns in even further, past the willow and castles into the stumps behind. Dhir cannot quite believe it and departs for a duck as well. MI are now 11/3 in a chase of 208.

2.20

Flatter on off, skids through, Dhir backs away and punches it straight to point.

FOUR! Too straight and SKY is off the mark in fine fashion. On the pads, Suryakumar Yadav gets forward and plays a whippy flick through the vacant mid-wicket region as the ball races away to the fence.

Both the MI openers are back in the hut in 11 balls. Suryakumar Yadav walks in at number 4.

1.5W

OUT! CHOPPED ON! What a moment for Mukesh Choudhary, with so many emotions going on in his head, and this wicket will feel good as he looks up to the heavens. On a good length, in the channel outside off, shaping back in. Quinton de Kock looks to drive away from the body and gets an inside edge on it. The ball goes back onto the stumps and Mumbai find themselves 7/2, with both openers dismissed. MI need 201 runs from 109 balls.

1.40

And again! The dots are piling up already. Back of a length outside off, punched firmly to backward point where Sarfaraz reacts well and stops it.

1.30

Back of a length and wide outside off, de Kock frees his arms and smacks it towards point, but the fielder manages to make a stop to his left. Not a clean one, but enough to stop the single.

1.20

Bowled a bit shorter and outside off, Quinton de Kock gets on his toes and plays it down towards short third.

1.10

Pitched-up delivery on off, de Kock firms it on the rise but straight to mid off.

An impact player fishes out the impact player of the opposite camp. CSK with a top start through Hosein. Naman Dhir walks in at number 3. Mukesh Choudhary will operate from the other end. FYI, the entire CSK side is wearing black armbands in tribute to the passing of Mukesh's mother.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! A ripper of a delivery from Akeal Hosein to end the first over of the chase. A perfect left-arm finger spinner's dismissal. Tossed up on off, draws Danish Malewar forward and Danish just looks to ease it on the up. However, the ball grips and turns away sharply, taking the outside edge. Sanju Samson takes a sharp catch to his right and Malewar departs for a golden duck. MI are 7/1, needing 201 runs.

0.30

Fuller and outside off, drawing the batter forward. De Kock leans on and drives it straight to mid off.

0.26

SIX! Just one ball to get his eye in and Quinton de Kock has nailed the second delivery. Bowled a bit flatter on the pads, de Kock sits down and slogs it flat over the long leg fence for a six to get going.

Starts with a dot, does Akeal. Nice and full on middle, floated up, Quinton de Kock eases it on the up to covers.

18.54

OUT!

WIDE! Slower bumper, dug in well short and goes away wide outside the off stump as well. Called a wide.

17.14

Full and straight, pace on, Jamie Overton walks at the bowler and hits it through covers for a single. Just two runs and a wicket off that over, top stuff from Bumrah.

An important wicket for MI through Bumrah. Jamie Overton is the new batter in at number 7. Mitchell Santner is walking off the field, holding his left shoulder.

16.5W

OUT! CAUGHT! A terrific catch in the deep and Jasprit Bumrah gets a wicket off a full toss as well. Mitchell Santner is the fielder who takes a beauty in the deep and according to Danny Morison on air, this is Santner's 100th catch in T20s. Attempted slower yorker from Bumrah, ends up being a full toss on middle. The ball dips a bit while curving in and Kartik Sharma swipes across the line, hitting it flat towards deep square leg. Santner puts in a lunging dive and pouches it brilliantly with both hands. However, he seems to have hurt his shoulder while doing so. The Super Kings are 165/5 after 16.5 overs.

A stunner from Santner? Looks like it. A fantastic catch from the Kiwi. Gives his 100 percent but seems to have hurt his left shoulder in the process of scooping the ball before the ground. The TV umpire deems it a clean effort.

16.40

Oh, Bumrah's got away with one here. Juicy full toss, outside off, Sharma hangs back and throws his hands at it but slices it without any timing towards extra cover. Three dots in a row now.

16.30

On the money again. Slower yorker now, on off stump, Sharma digs it back into the turf and the ball goes back to the bowler.

16.20

That's a gem of a delivery from Bumrah. At 141.2 kph and speared in at the toes. Kartik Sharma does well to get his bat down in time and jams it back to the bowler.

16.11

15.44

15.34

FOUR! Samson is showing his range here. A yorker now, just around off, Sanju Samson waits well and opens the bat face late to just glide it away through the short third region for a boundary.

Kartik Sharma takes a big stride out, plants the back knee into the pitch and lofts it cleanly over the deep extra cover fence for a big six. Never an easy shot to pull off but the young man made it look ridiculously easy. This shows why he has been trusted by CSK.

A quicker one, flatter too, full on off. Kartik Sharma plays from the crease and knocks it back to Santner.

13.30

Santner slows it up and drags the length back, at just 76.1 kph. Kartik Sharma cuts it to backward point.

13.26

SIX! That's a glorious hit! Pitched into the slot from Santner, full and around middle and off. Kartik Sharma picks the length early, dances down the track, gets underneath it and lofts it inside out over widish long off for a cracking six.

13.11

Pushes through, at 88.9 kph, full and on middle. Samson creates room and drives it along the ground to long off for a single.

STRATEGIC BREAK! Chennai Super Kings were going at well over 12 runs an over in the Powerplay but Mumbai Indians have pulled things back in this middle phase and the scoring rate is now just over 10 runs an over. Wickets at regular intervals have helped MI slow CSK down but Sanju Samson is still out there and looks in pristine touch. He does need a partner at the other end, as the loss of constant wickets can build pressure on him. MI will be looking to pick up a wicket or two quickly after the break and pull things back further. Let's get back to the action, as we still have 7 overs left in this innings.

Dewald Brevis hops in the crease and tries to ramp it behind deep third, but fails to generate that required power on the shot and airs it straight to Jasprit Bumrah at deep third. A simple catching practice for him. Chennai Super Kings are 122/4 as another batter departs after a start.

10.54

FOUR! Hurried him up but Brevis does well enough! Short of a good length, on middle. Brevis gets the ball at comfortable height and pulls it off the back foot, finding the fence at deep square leg.

10.41

Very full, on off, Samson heaves it along the ground to deep mid-wicket for a single.

10.34

FOUR! FIFTY FOR SAMSON! His 27th IPL fifty! He gets there in just 26 balls. A low full toss, hurled outside off. Samson extends his arms and slices the ball to the left of the diving backward point fielder for a boundary. Raises his bat calmly and gets back to face the next ball.

9.40

That's well bowled. Santner switches things up with a full and quick one at the toes. Brevis charges down the track to whack it leg side but nearly yorks himself as he gets an inside edge onto the pads.

FOUR! Down the wrong line and Sanju Samson uses those wrists well. Full and shaping into the pads, Samson flicks it well to the left of the short fine leg fielder and the ball rolls away into the fence.

7.31

Good length on the pads, worked away through the square leg region for a single now.

7.20

Oh, that's rushed the batter. On a hard length, peppered into the surface and angles back in from around off. Shivam Dube is late to play at it and gets an inside edge onto the pads.

7.11

Banged into the pitch, at just 111 kph and angled wide of the off stump. Sanju Samson gets on his toes and taps it down to deep cover for a single.

Ashwani Kumar is brought into the attack now. He replaces Mitchell Santner.

6.61

Floated up on off, a bit fuller and this one goes away from the right-hander. Sanju eases it between point and cover and picks up a single. 10 easy runs off the over.

6.51

Bowled from around the wicket to the left-hander, full and outside off. Dube caresses the ball through wide mid off for one more.

6.41

Flatter delivery on the stumps, pushed through a bit fuller, Samson punches it down to long on for a run.

6.36

SIX! That's begging to be hit. AM Ghazanfar goes short and tries to cramp the batter by darting it in. Sanju Samson has enough time to pick it up and he whacks the pull over deep square leg for a six.

6.21

Ghazanfar drags the length back a touch and bowls it straighter. Dube clips it through square leg and turns the strike over.

6.10

Fullish length, angled across off, Dube leans on to make a block.

STRATEGIC BREAK! So whose Powerplay was it? The Super Kings would be delighted to get a flying start yet again in the Powerplay. Whereas MI would be happy to at least pick a couple of big wickets en route. But fairly, it looks like a good batting wicket with a little bit of help for the spinners, while the likes of Hardik have been taken to the cleaners. Samson has looked proactive and will look to keep the tempo up with Dube trying to get himself settled before unleashing. An interesting middle phase coming up. AM Ghazanfar to bowl after the break. 1-0-6-1 so far.

5.60

Ends well, does Santner. Fuller in length, drifted in towards middle and leg. Samson shows the full face of the blade and punches it straight back as Mitch makes a stop to his right on the follow-through. CSK end the Powerplay at 73/2.

5.51

Santner takes a leaf out of Krunal Pandya's book now. He comes over the wicket and bangs it in quick and short on off. Shivam Dube swats the pull down to deep mid-wicket for one.

Santner strikes and strikes big to halt this budding stand. Both wickets have gone to the spinners. In walks Shivam Dube at number 4. His entry-point in the game is always one of the most hot topics to discuss.

5.4W

OUT! TIMBER! A clever bit of bowling from Mitchell Santner. Mitch slows it up and tosses it a bit higher. The ball lands around middle stump. Sarfaraz Khan goes down to sweep again but plays all around it. The ball turns away a bit and bounces over the willow to hit the top of the stumps and CSK lose their second wicket inside the Powerplay, 72/2 now.

5.30

Pushed through flatter around off, Sarfaraz hangs back, plays it late and dabs it down to short third.

5.24

FOUR! Up and away again. Dragged down by Santner, angled into the batter. Khan goes deep in the crease, backs away and heaves the pull high and to the left of the deep mid-wicket fielder for another boundary.

5.14

FOUR! Swept and swept well. Flighted ball on off, turning away, Sarfaraz Khan lunges ahead, takes the front leg out and drags the sweep aerially towards the left of deep square leg for a boundary.

Mitchell Santner comes in to bowl the final over of the Powerplay now.

Tries another yorker on the stumps, but it ends up as a low full toss. Sarfaraz Khan goes for the flick, but it goes off the toe end through deep fine leg for a single. 13 runs from Bumrah's second.

4.50

A projectile from Bumrah! Pinpoint yorker on middle with a hint of tail to the leg stump. Sarfaraz Khan does just well enough to squeeze it out.

4.41

On a hard length, outside off, skidding through. Sanju Samson tries to play the square cut off the back foot, but gets a thick outside edge and it runs to deep third for a run.

4.36

SIX! Dismissed out of his presence! Jasprit goes into the pitch with an off cutter, short on middle. Sanju Samson waits for the ball to come and then dumps it behind deep backward square leg with a pull shot.

4.21

Short of a good length, just outside off. Khan covers the stumps and plays it very late, running it fine to deep third's left for a single.

4.14

FOUR! Insult to the bowler! Bumrah pushes it fuller, on middle and off. Sarfaraz Khan prods forward, presents straight bat face and lofts it cleanly over the bowler and picks up his first boundary.

FOUR! Yes, it does and that's delicacy at its very best! Around the off stump, on a length. Sanju Samson stays put, lets the ball come at him and pins the ball between short third and backward point for a boundary. Another expensive over from Hardik. 50 UP FOR CSK!

Will the extra ball bring more misery to Pandya?

3.61wd

WIDE! Slower off cutter, dug short and over the head height of the batter. Sanju Samson climbs the imaginary ladder to ramp it behind, but misses to connect. Quinton de Kock leaps to collect it behind. Hardik looks keen to send it for a review for caught behind, but QDK looks unsure and they decide not to challenge it. UltraEdge shows a flat line later.

3.54

FOUR! Quite deliberate! Hard length, around off. Sanju Samson gets on the toes, opens the face of the blade and literally steers the ball to the right of deep slip, where Jasprit Bumrah dives to his right, but cannot stop it. A boundary for Samson.

3.46

SIX! Nonchalance from Samson! Full from Hardik, drifting on the pads. Sanju Samson needs no second invitation as he picks it up nicely and whips it behind deep square leg for a six.

3.34

FOUR! Runs away! Hardik bowls it short and down leg. Sanju Samson stands deep in the crease and with just a little prod forward, he tries to pull it. Gets it off the gloves and the ball runs between the keeper and short fine leg to the fence.

3.20

Good length, on off, Sanju pushes it to mid on.

3.10

Full and on middle. Samson plays from the crease and blocks it to mid on.

Ruturaj's fire burns bright but not for long, and CSK lose an early wicket once again. Sarfaraz Khan walks in at number 3.

OUT! MISTIMED AND GONE! Another Powerplay dismissal for the CSK skipper. AM Ghazanfar's dream run continues in this IPL. Ghazanfar floats one up full on leg stump, inviting the drive. Gaikwad clears out to the leg side and goes for the big hit down the ground, but the timing is all wrong and the ball balloons straight up into the air to long off. Tilak runs to his right and takes a safe catch. Gaikwad walks off after a promising start. CSK's coach, Stephen Fleming, has a blank look in the dugout. Chennai Super Kings are 32/1.

2.50

The leg break, on a length, outside off. Ruturaj Gaikwad lets the ball grip and then gently dabs it to backward point.

2.41

Touch short, on the leg stump. Sanju Samson goes on the back foot and nudges it to the square leg fielder. Sherfane Rutherford dives to his left but fails to stop it cleanly. Parries the ball behind to deep mid-wicket's right for a single.

2.31

Too full, on middle, Gaikwad lunges ahead and flicks it wide of mid-wicket for a single.

2.24

FOUR! What a beautiful touch! Slides on the middle stump on a length. Ruturaj Gaikwad plays from the crease and wrists it to the mid-wicket gap and finds the fence.

2.10

Starts from over the stump. Full, flat, around off, drifting away. Gaikwad gets forward and eases it to cover-point.

CSK are off to a flier here. Will Bumrah get a second over up top? Nope. In comes AM Ghazanfar as the first bowling change.

Nagging length, around off, shaping away. Gaikwad taps it to the cover region.

1.46

SIX! Gaikwad shows the urgency! Hardik goes short and angling it on the leg stump. The ball arrives at shoulder height and Gaikwad uses the pace to pull it behind to deep fine leg for a six.

1.34

FOUR! Off the edge! Overpitched delivery, moving away from the off pole. Ruturaj Gaikwad tries to play the straight drive, but adjusts to it by opening the bat face at the last second deliberately. It goes off the outside edge and shoots between the first slip and short third for a boundary.

1.31wd

WIDE! Reload! Shapes away, and breaches the guideline, outside off. Ruturaj Gaikwad reaches out to play the drive but misses to connect.

1.35nb

NO BALL, FOUR! Forced away! Hardik oversteps and dishes out a length ball, around off. The ball swings away but it doesn't rise much. Ruturaj Gaikwad plays off the back foot and heaves it to the right of the mid-wicket fielder and picks up his first boundary. Free Hit coming up...

1.20

Back of a length, curving away a bit, on off. Ruturaj Gaikwad plays off the back foot and defends it back to Hardik.

1.12

On a touch fuller length, swinging away, outside off. Ruturaj Gaikwad stays put and square cuts it to deep backward point for a couple of runs. The CSK captain is off the mark.

A perfect way to get out of the Free Hit, unscathed. Bumrah nails the yorker on the middle stump. Sanju Samson's head falls over as he looks to flick, but misses. The ball deflects off the pads to the backward point region. Bumrah, cheekily walks back and signals that it was plumb in front. So 7 from the opening over.

A nice tussle between bat and ball to begin with. However, it isn't over yet as Jasprit Bumrah has overstepped and it will be a Free Hit to follow.

0.65nb

FOUR! Picks the gap with a quality stroke! Just a little bit of an away shape, outside the off stump, full in length. Sanju Samson gets on the front foot, finds the middle and pins it through the cover and point gap for a crisp boundary. Oh, hang on! The siren goes off as Bumrah has overstepped. No Ball called and Free Hit to follow.

0.50

At 137.9 kph, this is bashed hard on a length, on top of middle. Sanju Samson lets the ball slant into him and blocks it back to Bumrah.

A slight halt in play as the physio comes out to perform a concussion check on Ruturaj Gaikwad. Thankfully, everything seems fine and we are good to continue.

0.41lb

Ouch! That's straight on the helmet. Short of a good length, with an extra zip and bounce on it. Ruturaj Gaikwad goes for the pull shot off the back foot but is undone by the excessive lift and is hit on the helmet grill. The ball then rolls through backward square leg and they get a leg bye.

0.30

On a back of a length, around off, Gaikwad leans forward and drives it straight to the cover fielder.

0.21

Sloppy in the field! Some outswing on a fuller length, outside off. Sanju Samson crisply drives it to Sherfane Rutherford at cover-point who collects the ball and releases a high throw towards Quinton de Kock. The keeper jumps, but it stays out of his reach and rolls to the fine leg region. They cross.

0.10

Bumrah starts on the money! Angles it into the batter from over the stump. On a good length on middle. Sanju Samson presses back and bunts it down the pitch watchfully.

We are all set for this titanic clash to get underway. The two umpires make their way out to the middle as the players of Mumbai Indians take their places on the field. The atmosphere inside the stadium is electrifying, and out walk the CSK openers - Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson. Just like the previous game, it will be Jasprit Bumrah who will take the new ball for MI. There is a slip in place to begin with as Samson gears up to face the first ball. Let's play...

Impact options for MI - Will Jacks, Raj Bawa, Shardul Thakur, Danish Malewar and Mayank Rawat.

Mumbai Indians (Unchanged Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock (WK), Naman Dhir, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya (C), Tilak Varma, Sherfane Rutherford, Mitchell Santner, Jasprit Bumrah, Krish Bhagat, AM Ghazanfar and Ashwani Kumar.

Impact options for CSK - Prashant Veer, Matthew Short, Matt Henry, Akeal Hosein and Urvil Patel.

Chennai Super Kings (Playing XI) - Sanju Samson (WK), Ruturaj Gaikwad (C), Sarfaraz Khan, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Kartik Sharma, Jamie Overton, Noor Ahmad, Anshul Kamboj, Gurjapneet Singh and Mukesh Choudhary.

The captain of Chennai Super Kings - Ruturaj Gaikwad says that they would have bowled first as well, calling it a 50-50 call. Adds that the wicket looks good and at Wankhede, the expectation is always that you bat well regardless of which side of the toss you end up on. On being asked about the momentum CSK have built over the last two games, Gaikwad says the team has been performing well, but acknowledges that converting good starts into wins remains the challenge. He highlights that the bowling was solid in the previous game and the batting got off to a promising start too, but stresses that capitalising at the crucial moments is what the team needs to get right. Adds that confidence is high in the camp and the group is ready to go. On being told about the tremendous fan support CSK receive, Gaikwad is quick to credit it all to MS Dhoni, who he refers to as a legend, adding that it is unfortunate he is not there for this game. He adds that wherever CSK go, the backing from the stands is immense. He hopes that the team can reward that support with a win.

The captain of Mumbai Indians - Hardik Pandya says that they will bowl first and talks about the last game, saying that a lot of boxes were ticked, with everyone chipping in. Adds that it was a cautious effort in terms that the intensity was in their control and things went their way too. On the pitch, he says that the pitch looks green but will play well, just like the KKR game. Ends by informing that they are going with an unchanged team.

TOSS - Time for the coin to go up in Wankhede. Both captains - Hardik Pandya and Ruturaj Gaikwad are in readiness. And the ever-energetic, Ravi Shastri will lead the proceedings. Hardik will give it a flick and Gaikwad will call it. Tails is the call but it lands as Heads. MUMBAI INDIANS ELECT TO BOWL FIRST.

Someone from the CSK camp - Gurjapneet Singh, on being asked about his debut IPL season, says that it has been a rewarding experience so far, describing it as a strong learning curve where every game feels like a fresh start. He says he is focused on picking up something new from each match and feels the campaign has gone well overall. On being asked about picking up a wicket on the very first ball of his IPL career, he says it is a feeling he simply cannot forget, recalling how the moment left him briefly stunned before the reality sank in. Shares that he celebrated and quickly looked ahead to the next delivery. On being asked about his parents' reaction, he shares that there is nothing quite like seeing them happy and backing him through every small moment. Also mentions that he always urges them to come and watch him play and wish him luck in person. On being asked about the biggest lesson from being part of the CSK setup, he details his conversations with the bowling coaches have pointed him firmly towards death overs bowling. Further details that it is the area he wants to develop the most, given how decisive it is in T20 cricket.

We have got someone with the mic - MI's Mitchell Santner, it is. Santner starts by talking about the last game and says that it was much needed and feels that it was a complete performance last time out. Feels that they can take the momentum into this game and says that both teams know each other pretty well. On keeping a calm head when the team is losing, Mitch says that it is the hardest thing to do but feels that as long as you have clear plans and execute them, everything else is fine. On having success in the Impact Player era, Santner says that the pitches did turn a bit last year, which hasn't been the case so far this season and reiterates that it is about executing your skills and being brave. Mitch ends by saying that it is always great to play at the Wankhede and there's extra bounce for the spinners as well but at the same time the pitch is flat and the ball does travel quite a bit.

No Hitman and Mahi tonight? An MI-CSK game without Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni is a bit like watching a classic film with two of its lead actors cut out. Both former captains had raised hopes by turning up at practice sessions. While Rohit is there, no one can spot MSD and we are hearing that he has not made it to the venue. It seems, in all likelihood, this one will go on without them taking the field.

PITCH REPORT - Former Kiwi pacer, Danny Morrison is pitchside. He starts by saying that it is Pitch number 7, which is almost smack in the middle. Informs that the square boundaries are 64 meters and 63 meters on either side, with the straight hit being 74 meters. Former Proteas pacer, Dale Steyn, joins Danny and says that the pitch looks excellent for batting. However, Steyn cites the example of Arshdeep Singh, who executed his plans to perfection and when the norm is about 230 and you keep it down to about 210, you've done your job as well. The duo further add that there's an even covering of grass on it and there will be some purchase early on for the pacers, but also reckon that there will be dew later on, which will help the batters.

UPDATE - Chennai Super Kings have confirmed the official signing of Akash Madhwal as a replacement for Ayush Mhatre, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a left hamstring injury. Mhatre's absence leaves a significant void at the top for CSK, given he was their leading run-scorer this season. Who slots in at number three now is one of the more interesting selection questions facing the franchise, with Urvil Patel among those in contention for the role. The Madhwal signing, though, offers some relief on the bowling front, along with the addition of Aussie left-arm quick, Spencer Johnson. With Khaleel Ahmed already ruled out, CSK's pace attack was looking thin, and Madhwal walking in shores that up at just the right time.

Aamchi Mumbai - There is no place like it, and every Mumbaikar will tell you that with their chest out. Every great Mumbai cricketer has a maidan story. Shivaji Park in the morning, a rubber ball, too many players, not enough stumps, and an argument about whether that was out or not that lasted longer than the game itself. The Wankhede sits right at the edge of it all, pressed against the Arabian Sea, a ground where the crowd does not just watch cricket, it lives it. Mumbai Indians have turned Wankhede into something close to a fortress, winning 57 matches at home, one of the finest home records any franchise has built in the league. But if there is one team that has dared to walk into that fortress and walk out with the points, it is Chennai Super Kings. 5 wins at Wankhede against MI makes CSK the second most successful visiting side here, a stat that adds a little extra edge to every time these two meet on this ground.

Very little to separate - The overall head-to-head reads 21-18 in favour of Mumbai Indians. Shift the lens to the Wankhede, and MI still hold the edge, 8-5, but again, by the barest of margins. The most one-sided chapter of this rivalry belongs to 2019, when Mumbai and Chennai met four times across the season, including the final, and MI won every single one. But since 2020, the year Mumbai last won the title, CSK have quietly turned the tables, winning 7 out of 11 encounters between the two sides. And yet, step back and look at the full picture. MI have won the most matches in IPL history. CSK, on the other hand, the second most.

April 23, 2008 - A date that looked ordinary like any other on the calendar, but quietly, it lit the fuse. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings met for the very first time, in the maiden season of a league finding its feet. No dynasties yet, no trophies to parade or boast, no needle to the rivalry. Just two teams, a cricket ground, and the first page of what would become the greatest story this tournament has ever told - the El Classico of IPL. Poetically, 18 years down the line, now the two most successful sides in this tournament's history meet again on this very date. Both have ruled this competition. Both made winning a habit and know what it takes to lift that trophy. But right now, neither is where they want to be, and that makes this contest even more dangerous. Two sleeping giants, not at the peak, but with plenty left to prove. Hello and welcome to our coverage of Match 33. It is MI versus CSK, and it is happening at the Wankhede Stadium. Some anniversaries you simply cannot script.

... MATCH DAY ...

El Classico time - Some rivalries are built over seasons. This one grew with us. The IPL has seen many contests rise and fade, a few fresh rivalries trying to claim space, but this one has never needed validation. It simply is the biggest. Ten trophies between them, five each. Blue against yellow. Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium. It does not get bigger, it does not get louder. Yet this time, it carries a different kind of tension. Mumbai Indians are still chasing that feeling from 2020, a rare stretch of silence for a team that once made winning a habit. Chennai Super Kings, since their title in 2023, have not quite looked like themselves either, slipping into a phase where victories have been harder to come by than expected. For two teams that once set the standard, this has been unfamiliar territory. Even this season has mirrored their struggles. Two wins, four losses each. Almost like they have walked the same path to arrive here. Now, as they step into this clash and reach the halfway mark of their campaign, it is about momentum, belief, and perhaps, a turning point in seasons that are still searching for a spark. An upward tick - Just like a bloodbath in the share market eventually gives way to a slight uptick, Mumbai Indians have had their moment of recovery in Ahmedabad. They arrived at the clash against the Titans on the back of four consecutive defeats, but a collective performance turned things around in emphatic fashion. The win not only gave their net run rate a significant boost but also lifted them off the bottom of the table to seventh place. As they prepare for their fourth home game, the mood in the camp looks markedly different. That is what a win does. One slice of positivity can shift the atmosphere across an entire squad. And MI had plenty of reasons to feel good. The biggest concern heading into that game was Jasprit Bumrah's wicketless run through the first five matches. It ended in the most Bumrah way possible. Summoned to open the attack, possibly for the first time in a long while, he struck with the very first ball of his spell and put that arid run firmly to rest. There was a similar murmur building around Tilak Varma. Before the previous match, he had managed just 43 runs across five outings. Even against GT, he was slow out of the blocks, scratching around on 19 off 22 balls. What followed over the next 23 balls was something else entirely. He rained mayhem on Ahmedabad, hammering his way to a century that transformed MI's total. The margin of victory was 99 runs. Just two fewer than what Tilak scored. The juxtaposition could not have been any sharper. Sharper look with the ball - What Bumrah's spell of 1/15 did was feed off into a slightly revamped bowling unit, one that looked a bit thin on experience. There were also indications of some tough calls being made as their bowling unit lacked the necessary penetration in crucial phases, and MI followed through. Shardul and Chahar, both of whom had been pretty inconsistent so far, were benched. In came fresh energy in the form of Krish Bhagat, who bowled an impressive two-over spell, while impact player Ashwani Kumar stole the spotlight with a fantastic four-wicket haul. It is worth remembering that last season too, Ashwani kicked off his campaign with a four-for and got noticed. It was also MI's best powerplay bowling performance of the season in terms of wickets taken. In the spin department, AM Ghazanfar has been simply outstanding. Baring one game, where he was expensive and went wicketless, he has been on a wicket-taking spree. From back-to-back three games, he has picked up two wickets in each, and has been extremely miserly as well. Whereas Mitchell Santner, whenever called upon, has displayed his wizardry sincerely and effectively as well. Big names yet to fire - Of all the experienced names in the MI batting unit, it is Naman Dhir who leads the run-scoring charts this season. He has been handed an opportunity in every game and has not let down those who trusted him. Quinton de Kock, meanwhile, has already notched a century this year in just two games. But more often than not, MI's top order is still searching for that fifth gear in the Powerplay that can set the tone early. It has not been a terrible season by any means, but SKY has lacked the consistency that defines him at his best. Just one half-century to his name so far, he will be keen to put some runs on the board. He does carry a fine record against the opposition, with 411 runs against CSK, second only to Rohit among active MI batters. Also the fact that Suryakumar Yadav scored a match-winning 68* at the Wankhede last year vs Super Kings, will motivate him. The wounded Lions - Three straight losses, two comeback wins at home, and then another glaring defeat on the road. CSK are yet to register a win away from home this season and will hope Wankhede is where that changes. But they have been hit hard once again. Losing Khaleel Ahmed in the pace department was blow enough. Ayush Mhatre, being ruled out for the remainder of the season, has come as a genuine shock to the yellow army. The next-gen star sustained a left hamstring injury while batting against SRH, having slotted in at number three and taken to the role with remarkable ease. With 201 runs at a strike rate touching 178, he was CSK’s highest run-scorer and their most exciting presence at the top of the order. No official replacement has been announced as yet for him. A major boost has arrived in the pace department, however. Spencer Johnson has joined the squad, the tall left-arm Australian quick who was originally drafted as Nathan Ellis’ replacement but was kept away by a back injury of his own. Now fit and available, his inclusion brings a new dimension to CSK’s attack. The only puzzle it creates is around their four overseas slots, and how they choose to fit him in will be one of the more interesting selection calls. A huge positive - CSK’s most significant improvement this season has come with the bat, and more specifically in the Powerplay. It was a phase that badly let them down last year, where they averaged between 7-8 runs an over, among the worst in the competition. This season, that number has jumped in the north of 10s an over through the field restrictions. The intent has clearly been there from the likes of Sanju Samson and Mhatre up top to set the tone nicely. The Gaikwad conundrum - Coming to Mumbai, all eyes will be on skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. So far, it has been a quieter season than he would have liked with the bat. Just 82 runs in six matches at a strike rate of only 112.32 for a batter who has been the cornerstone of CSK’s top order for years. The additional burden of captaincy may well be playing its part, and Gaikwad himself will be aware that a big innings is overdue. He averages 41.57 vs MI with three half centuries and Wankhede could be just the stage for him to rediscover his fluency. An undercooked middle order - One way or the other, the problems persist for the Super Kings, and this season the middle order has been a case of feast or famine. Dewald Brevis is a welcome addition, but consistency has eluded him so far. Shivam Dube has been a pale shadow of himself. Sarfaraz Khan brings a certain stability that is hard to quantify, but even with the required firepower in the ranks, CSK are yet to chase a total beyond 190 since 2018, a stat that speaks for itself. The SRH game only made it worse. Needing 82 off 60 balls, they botched it up and extended that unwanted record further. Kamboj leads the way - CSK have been investing in Anshul Kamboj with a long-term lens, and the returns have been encouraging. He has been a touch expensive at times this season, but the wickets have kept coming consistently, and he currently dons the Purple Cap with 13 to his name. He brings value in the powerplay, but it is his execution in the death that has been particularly noteworthy, those around-the-wicket wide yorkers giving batters very little to work with. Since the beginning of the 2025 season, with 21 wickets to his name, Kamboj is the second-highest wicket-taker for CSK, only behind Noor Ahmad (28 wickets in the same phase), who is just beginning to hit his stride. And in the absence of experience around him, Kamboj has quietly taken up the responsibility of leading the CSK bowling attack, and so far, he has carried it well. Around him, Jamie Overton has complemented well with his excessive pace and bounce. But it is the second line of attack that remains the question mark, and CSK will need more consistency from that group if they are to challenge the opposition. The OGs coming back? It is hard to imagine an MI versus CSK clash without two of Indian cricket's greatest. Two captains who built these franchises into the most successful sides in IPL history. Rohit Sharma's availability remains under the clouds. Reports suggest he could be fit enough to return, and MI would dearly want him back. With 881 runs against CSK, he is their most successful batter in this fixture, but complete clarity on his fitness is still awaited. MS Dhoni, on the other hand, has been dropping hints of his own. He was spotted wicketkeeping in the nets at Wankhede, which has set tongues wagging. He has been sidelined since suffering a calf strain and is yet to play this season. If and when he does take the field, it will be a massive boost for CSK, though whether he comes in as an impact player or from the start remains to be seen. Meanwhile, after days of speculation, Will Jacks has finally arrived in India and linked up with the MI camp. The England all-rounder was instrumental for MI last season and carried that form into the T20 World Cup, where he showcased his skills with both bat and ball. His arrival adds another dimension to an already potent MI setup. Team form (Last 5 completed IPL matches, recent first) MI - WLLLL | CSK - LWWLL. What to expect? Wankhede and run fests go hand in hand, and this season has done nothing to challenge that reputation. The average first innings score at the ground this year stands at 218 across three games, and even that has not been enough to seal results. Two of those three matches have been won by the chasing side, which tells its own story. To put it in perspective, 220 is the lowest score in four of the six batting innings at the venue this season. On this surface, no total is truly safe, and no chase is truly out of reach, which promises another high-scoring game in the making between the two giants of the IPL. Should be a cracker of a contest.
