Commentary

Next up in the IPL - A new week in the Indian Premier League kicks off on Monday, 13th April, when the Sunrisers Hyderabad take on the Rajasthan Royals in Hyderabad, with the Royals being one of only 2 sides to remain unbeaten so far. The game will commence at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but as you know the drill, you can join us early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!

Weekend action comes to a close - A run-fest in Mumbai to wrap up the weekend. 462 runs were scored in a marathon, with RCB coming up trumps to clinch their third win of the season in 4 games, while MI have plenty to think about, particularly on the bowling front, having now lost 3 on the trot. Earlier in the day in Lucknow, the Gujarat Titans prevailed over the Lucknow Super Giants in a comfortable chase, with both sides now having 2 wins and as many losses.

The skipper of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru - Rajat Patidar says that the win feels amazing, especially with the atmosphere in Wankhede, and the feeling of playing in a packed stadium like this is special. Adds that the way Virat Kohli and Phil Salt set it up was crucial, and then he and the rest of the batters managed to capitalise. On being called a spin specialist in the past, Patidar says that he does play spin well, but he is also good against pace, and it is starting to show. On Kohli's injury, he downplays it a bit and says that he doesn't know yet.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - For his swashbuckling 78 off 36 balls, Phil Salt wins the award. When asked about his golden duck in the last game and then coming up with this performance tonight, Salt says it is about riding the highs and lows of the game and staying balanced. Salt says that some grounds are not the most bowler-friendly, so the approach is to keep taking the attack to the opposition. Mentions that you cannot score runs in every game, and no one can, so his focus is on trying to make an impact whenever he gets the opportunity.

Time for the presentation ceremony....

Next up is RCB's Suyash Sharma - Suyash says the plan was to keep the stumps in play. Mentions that he was not focused on bowling dot balls, but wanted to pick up wickets. He adds that it depends on the situation, whether to bowl defensively to save runs or attack in search of wickets. When asked about his plans against Tilak Varma and Ryan Rickelton, he says he wanted to bowl in the blockhole, as they are strong when given width, and his aim was simply to hit the stumps.

The captain of the Mumbai Indians - Hardik Pandya says that they just conceded way too many runs. Adds that they were always playing catch-up, and be it as a bowling unit or the batting unit, they have been playing catch-up in the last two games. Believes that it is a good thing that they have a couple of days off to reconsider a few things. He acknowledges that things aren't working for them, and irrespective of the toss or the wicket, they need to play good cricket. On the Powerplays yielding so many runs in general, he says that they will look into it and do what they can with the ball. On Sherfane Rutherford, Pandya says that they always knew the kind of potential he has and the way he batted, he gave us a lot of confidence tonight.

Salt and Patidar headline RCB blitz - After the toss fell MI's way, they were sent on a leather hunt as first Phil Salt, and then Rajat Patidar teed off. Amidst that carnage, Virat Kohli had an uncharacteristically scratchy innings. 183 at the end of 14 overs, and the way RCB were going, it looked like a case of how much beyond 250 and not if they would get there. However, MI managed to pull things back, and RCB had to be content with 240. Jasprit Bumrah was once again tough to get away and was the most economical of the lot, though he went wicketless and is yet to pick up a wicket this IPL.

A mountain too steep to climb - In pursuit of 241, it was not a bad start for the Mumbai Indians with 56 runs coming off the first 5 overs, but then Rohit Sharma pulled up with a hamstring issue. That resulted in a couple of breaks before eventually retiring hurt. If that was not enough to disrupt the momentum, Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma fell in the same over. From there, MI never managed to inject the desired impetus into their innings and did not get those big overs to keep the required run rate in check. Krunal Pandya made it all the more difficult for Mumbai through the middle phase, but Sherfane Rutherford's power-hitting ensured the run rate did not take a bigger hit.

RCB return to winning ways - A game that seemed to go on forever, but the result was sealed well before the end. A win set up by the RCB batters, and the bowlers did the rest to close it out. Hardik Pandya pointed to execution with the ball as the reason for their defeat in that 11-over shootout against the Rajasthan Royals, and it was the bowling once again that came under fire. After starting the season with a win, MI have now lost three games in a row.

19.66

SIX! That's it, it is finally over, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru win by 18 runs. Overpitched delivery outside off, right in the slot, Sherfane Rutherford hangs back and muscles it through the line over long on for another biggie, the fourth one in the over. 26 runs off it.

19.56

SIX! Rutherford is playing a gem here, sadly, it doesn't seem to be enough. A low full toss, wide outside the off stump, Rutherford reaches out and stylishly lofts it all the way over the cover fence for a biggie.

19.51wd

WIDE! Another attempted full and wide one, too wide for the umpire's liking.

19.40

Full and outside off, driven straight to extra cover.

19.36

SIX! That sounded so sweet off the bat. Short of a length, over middle, sits up as well. Rutherford picks it up and clobbers the pull shot deep into the stands beyond the mid-wicket fence.

19.20

A swing and a miss. Back of a length and outside off, Rutherford leans back to pull but misses. He wants to review it for a wide, not quite sure why but MI don't have any reviews left.

19.21wd

WIDE! Full and wide outside off, lands past the tramline for a wide.

19.16

SIX! FIFTY up for Sherfane Rutherford, his maiden IPL half-century. A waist-high full toss from Shepherd, angling into the batter. Rutherford swivels and pulls it flat over deep backward square leg for a six. Rutherford feels this is above waist height and takes the review for a No Ball not given. The third umpire confirms that Rutherford's waist height is 1 meter, and the ball was at 0.97 meters, close but not close enough.

Rasikh Salam returns, or does he? He was at the top of his mark, ready to bowl, but it turns out he had been off the field for too long and is not eligible to bowl yet. Romario Shepherd to bowl the final over of the game.

Bhuvi keeps the length full and lands it almost perfectly at the batter's toes. Rutherford flicks it to mid-wicket for a single. 45 needed off 6 balls and barring any extras, it's game over for MI.

18.51

Full on middle and leg, dug out through mid on for one more by Santner.

18.41

That's a top delivery. Bhuvneshwar Kumar nails the straight yorker, Rutherford can only manage to jam it into the turf. The ball goes over the bowler's head and they get a single.

18.30

Too full, around leg, Rutherford looks to flick but misses and gets hit on the front leg.

18.24

FOUR! Put away with ease. A low full toss from Bhuvi, on the pads, and Rutherford clips it down to fine leg for a boundary.

18.11

Almost perfectly in the blockhole, on off, Santner drives it down to long off for a run.

SIX! An over filled with three wides and three big hits, nothing in between. Short of a length, and outside off, Sherfane Rutherford leans back and swings with the angle, nailing it over deep mid-wicket for a biggie. 21 off the over and still, it's under-par.

17.61wd

WIDE! No chance of a review this time. Full and well wide of the off stump line, Rutherford extends his arms but can't reach it.

17.50

Another review, this time by Sherfane Rutherford for a wide not given for height. Short ball around off, comes in at helmet height and Rutherford fails to pull it away. The third umpire is called into action once again and technology confirms that Rutherford's head height is 1.87 meters, whereas the ball passed at a height of 1.80 meters. No wide!

17.51wd

WIDE! Pace off again from Duffy, short and wide outside off. Rutherford looks to slap it over point but misses and a wide is called. Once again, RCB review it. The third umpire checks it again and this time, he finds that no part of the ball is inside the wide guideline. The wide call stays.

Commentary

We are back for the all-important chase. The umpires make their way back out to the middle and the players of RCB are taking their places on the field. Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton get their bats put through the gauge before they stride onto the field of play to open the innings for Mumbai. RCB use their Impact Sub and bring on Rasikh Salam in place of Tim David. Jacob Duffy will get proceedings underway with the ball, let's go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

MI looking for a record chase - Mumbai Indians have a big task at hand but it is not an impossible one, certainly not with their batting line-up. However, 241 is always tough to get no matter what and Royal Challengers Bengaluru will be eyeing up early wickets to get ahead in the game. All in all, it promises to be an epic second essay. Stay tuned.

Patidar, the middle-overs aggressor - If Mumbai thought the breakthrough would bring a moment of calm, Patidar had other ideas. From ball one, it was wham, bam, slam, the boundaries coming in all shapes and sizes. Both Kohli and Patidar eventually fell after reaching their fifties, and for two or three overs, MI clawed back a sliver of hope. But RCB had too many guns still loaded. Tim David walked out to the middle at the death and made batting look like a formality, hammering the final nails with ruthless efficiency, smashing 34* off just 16 balls. From MI's bowling pov, Jasprit Bumrah's search for his first wicket this season didn't end, but he bowled with precision, giving just 35 runs. And given the magnitude of runs scored, his economy of 8.75 stood best among the rest of the bowling attack.

Fielders become spectators - 76, 51, and 61 were RCB's Powerplay scores before this game in this season. This time, the openers made it four in a row to remember, blazing to 71/0 in the first six on a batting paradise. The runs did not just flow, they gushed. It took RCB a mere 16 balls to cross three figures after the Powerplay, with Salt playing the enforcer to perfection, teeing off to a breezy half century while Kohli purred along at the other end, unhurried and in complete control. Shardul finally got his man, but by then Salt had already damaged a lot.

RCB wreak havoc at Wankhede - 250/3 against Chennai Super Kings in their previous game at the Chinnaswamy, and 240/4 against Mumbai Indians at their home ground. This is power-hitting at its absolute best from RCB. From ball one, it was raining fours and sixes with the ball made to travel all across the park. This is also RCB's highest score against Mumbai Indians, eclipsing their previous best of 235.

SIX! Tim David spoils the over for Boult and finishes off in style as RCB end with 240/4 on the board. Boult tries to spear in another yorker on the leg stump but misses the mark ever so slightly. However, that's all David needs as he clears the front leg and tonks this full toss deep over the mid-wicket fence to end the first innings.

19.51

This is turning out to be a sensational final over from Trent Boult. Full and on the pads, not quite in the blockhole but good enough. Shepherd clips it to deep square leg for a single.

19.41

Good change-up from Boult. David is expecting another yorker but Boult bowls it short and right at the batter. David backs away and forces the ball through mid off for one.

19.31

Just another single. Another yorker, on off stump, Romario Shepherd digs it out through mid off and turns the strike over.

Four balls remaining. Time for Romario Shepherd to come in? Yes, absolutely. There he comes, in at number 6.

19.2W

OUT! LBW! Two top-class deliveries from Trent Boult and that's plumb. Boult brings out the cross-seamer, bowling it very full and on middle and off. Jitesh Sharma shuffles to the off side and tries to lean across and lap it or sweep it away but fails to get any bat on it. Sharma is struck on the front leg and up goes the umpire's finger. Dead in front.

19.11

Just a single to start the over. In the blockhole, on leg stump, jammed out towards deep mid-wicket for just a single.

Trent Boult to bowl the final over of the innings. He has gone for 40 runs in 3 overs. Mumbai Indians have been penalised for a slow-over rate. They will have to keep an extra fielder inside the 30-yard circle till the end.

18.61

Full and straight, David clears the front leg but can't get under it, hits it down to long on for just a single. 13 from the penultimate over of the innings. Another wicketless night for Bumrah. But he finishes with figures of 4-0-35-0.

18.50

No wide given, was there any bat on it? Tim David doesn't agree with the call, but RCB are out of reviews. Very full, down the leg side as Bumrah tries to follow the batter. This one misses the batter and David fails to flick it away.

18.46

SIX! Into the arc and out of the park. Full and sliding down the leg side, David clips it off the legs and sends the ball sailing flat over deep square leg for a biggie.

18.34

FOUR! That's hit with brute force. Full and straight, it is the slower ball but not quite yorker-length. David clears the front leg and whacks it back over the bowler's head for a boundary.

18.21

Bumrah errs on the fuller side and serves a full toss on off, Sharma loses his shape and awkwardly hits it down to mid off for just a single.

18.11lb

Attempted yorker, tails back into the pads, Tim David fails to get it away. The ball brushes the back pad and rolls down to short fine leg. Just a leg bye.

Jasprit Bumrah (3-0-23-0) will bowl the penultimate over. Will he finally get a wicket to his name this season? Let's see...

17.62

A good yorker from Hardik, on middle and leg, Sharma jams it down to long on and races back for two runs. 16 off the over.

17.50

Full and wide outside off, flirting with the tramline outside off, but lands inside it. Left alone by Sharma.

17.42

Good work in the deep. Back of a length, on middle, not short enough to pull but Jitesh goes through with the shot. The ball hurries between deep square leg and deep mid-wicket, where Naman Dhir from the latter position sprints across and dives to his right to keep it down to two runs.

17.31

A surprise bumper, around off and near helmet height. David looks to pull but gets hurried and gets an inside edge onto the body as the ball rolls behind square on the leg side for a single.

Another halt. The ball seems to have gone out of shape here and it is being replaced. The fourth umpire is out with a briefcase of replacement balls. Meanwhile, there's a detailed chat between Hardik and Rohit regarding the field changes. The on-field umpires now pick another ball. Tim David shows his displeasure with the ball that is selected. But we are good to go finally.

17.26

SIX! David makes the most of the freebie. Poor delivery from Pandya as he misses the yorker and serves a full toss on middle, David sets himself deep in the crease, gets under the flight of the ball and heaves it high over deep mid-wicket for a six.

17.21nb

NO BALL! Uh, oh! That's slipped out of Pandya's hand and Tim David is shaking his head, feeling that he should have put that away. A very high full toss, just around off, David is taken by surprise and fails to connect, but it is deemed too high by the umpires. Actually, MI have reviewed this No Ball call, might be just a tactical review from Pandya. The third umpire has a look and finds that the ball is well above David's waist height. Free Hit loading...

Hardik is down on his knees and looks uncomfortable out there. He has instantly called on for the physio. Looks like a cramp or maybe he is feeling a bit of dizziness. Gulps a few sips of water and is ready to go.

17.14

FOUR! Powered away by David. Banged in well short and outside off, Tim David has to really reach for it but he uses those muscles and forces the slap-shot to the left of the cover fielder for a boundary.

17.46

SIX! A mile high in the air but pretty long as well. A juicy full toss around middle and off, Sherfane Rutherford nails the lofted shot and whacks it well over long on for a biggie.

17.30

Bowled from around the wicket, slower and shorter into the pitch, wide outside off. Rutherford throws his hands at it but fails to connect.

17.26

SIX! A low full toss on off stump, Rutherford gets under the flight of the ball and powers it over the long on fence for a biggie.

17.10

Good review. This time on the off side. Slower one, slightly short, it is the off cutter that goes away from the left-hander and is called a wide. Rutherford hops up to hit it over the off side but misses. Duffy feels this is a harsh call and after pondering for a while, Rajat Patidar reviews the wide call. The third umpire checks the replays and finds that the ball is passing inside the wide guideline and the on-field decision is changed.

Full and straight, Rutherford leans on and drills it down to long on for just one more.

Another short ball, pace on this time and dug in over middle, Santner forces the pull shot in front of mid-wicket and picks up a single.

Shepherd picks up two wickets in two balls, but wait, neither of them will count. Pitched up full again, at the stumps, Sherfane Rutherford goes hard at it and skews it towards extra cover. Rajat Patidar takes the catch but it is a Free Hit and the batters pick up a single.

15.61nb

Can you believe it? You simply cannot fathom it. Romario Shepherd comes on to finish off Rasikh's over, just one ball to bowl and gets the dangerman Sherfane Rutherford, but hang on, ROMARIO HAS OVERSTEPPED. It is a No Ball as the siren goes off and Rutherford will have a go at the Free Hit. Coming to the delivery, this is bowled full on leg stump, Rutherford looks to flick it off the pads, but ends up skying it high towards mid-wicket. A plethora of fielders run towards it but it is the bowler who calls for it and reaches towards the ball, dives in and pouches it brilliantly. However, it all goes in vain.

Oh, dear! Rasikh Salam is down again. Rajat Patidar is quick to help the pacer with a few stretches. Another appearance for the physio, who is now unwrapping Salam's left calf that was strapped earlier. The decision has been made. Rasikh is going off the field. Romario Shepherd will complete the over.

15.50

Oh, that's well bowled and once again Rasikh is down on the ground. Gets the yorker in, just outside the line of the off stump. Rutherford looks to play the cover drive but the ball sneaks past the under edge. This could be another stoppage in the game.

15.41

Good-length delivery, on middle, bowled slower too, Mitchell Santner pushes it out through covers for a single.

Mitchell Santner is the new batter.

15.3W

OUT! CAUGHT! Rasikh Salam might be struggling with his fitness, but he's got a wicket here. Rasikh peppers that hard length and bowls it just outside off. Naman Dhir stays back and looks to power it through the off side but gets it high on the bat. The ball gets lobbed towards extra cover, where Rajat Patidar takes a simple catch, and Rasikh is pumped up with that wicket. 87 needed now off 27 balls.

15.21

Goes for the yorker, ends up bowling a very low full toss on off, Rutherford punches it down to long off for a single.

Rasikh Salam is really struggling. He pulled up on his follow-through and is down on the ground. It's the cramps in the left calf that are bothering him. The physio is out again to tend to Rasikh. Salam is back on his feet, and he will have another go.

15.16

SIX! It's go big or go home time and Sherfane Rutherford has just deposited that deep into the stands. Slower one into the pitch, sits up nicely for the batter. Rutherford picks it up and whacks it handsomely in front of deep square leg for a biggie. And the cramp is also back for Rasikh, not a good sign for RCB.

Suyash Sharma is done with his spell, and Rasikh Salam (2-0-15-0) comes back in to replace him. However, Rasikh seems to have pulled up while starting the over. There seems to be an issue with his left shin, or maybe his calf has an issue. The physio is out and hands him the 'pickle juice.' On this note, the umpires call for a STRATEGIC BREAK. RCB have complete control of the game right now and MI need in excess of 18 runs an over to get over the line. It will be a like a miracle if they do pull it off from here, but stranger things have happened in a game of cricket, especially in the IPL.

Another one bites the dust and out comes the new batter. Naman Dhir is in at number 6.

OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! First wicket of the night for Duffy and a big one at that. Duffy slips in the full ball and the line stays outside off. Hardik makes the shuffle again and swings hard at it. He loses his shape and ends up slicing it in the air off the outer half towards deep backward point. Romario Shepherd takes a few steps in off the ropes to settle under the skier and takes a safe catch. Hardik's fight comes to an end and MI suffer another blow in the chase.

14.30

A proper short ball this time by Duffy. Hardik Pandya walks across the stumps and gets his hands high to connect but misses.

14.24

FOUR! Smart batting! On a hard length, another off-cutter, on off. Pandya waits for the ball to arrive and opens the bat face to thread the gap between short third and backward point and picks up a boundary.

14.12

Good effort! Full and outside off. Hardik puts his head down and slices it over cover. Phil Salt is quick across the turf at long off to his left and he puts in the dive to prevent the boundary. Two runs taken.

14.11wd

Wide! Tries to keep it away from the batter's arc, does Duffy. This slips beyond the tramline on off. Hardik lets it go.

Acrobatics from Pandya! Suyash attacks the stumps, full in length, on middle. SKY punches it on the up back towards the bowler. Suyash moves to his right and makes a half-stop as the ball clips his fingertips before rolling down to long off. Hardik falls on his back while trying to get back before springing back up on his feet.

11.31

Very interesting, as Hardik Pandya is eventually allowed to change his gloves midway through the over. However, according to Faf du Plessis on air, Tristan Stubbs wasn't allowed to change his gloves mid-over in yesterday's game against CSK. Hardik tried a couple of times and eventually succeeded.

FOUR! A shot of high quality. Duffy brings the line closer to the off stump but the length stays on the shorter side. Ryan rises with the bounce and punches it through covers for a boundary.

0.50

A big swing and a miss! Duffy serves it on a short of a good length. This keeps going away from the southpaw. Rickelton reaches out and has a swipe across the line but does not connect.

0.40

Duffy hits the hard length, outside off. Rickelton stands tall on his toes and gets on top of the bounce before punching it firmly to cover.

0.36

SIX! All the way! Pushed across the batter again, on a good length. Rickelton collapses his back knee and heaves it away on the leg side. He does not quite get hold of it but gets enough to clear the deep square leg fence. Ryan and MI are away.

0.20

Beaten! This leaves the left-hander, on a length. Ryan pokes at it away from his body and is beaten as the ball nips away off the surface.

0.10

Duffy starts with a full ball, on off. This shapes back into Rickelton as he taps it to mid off.

A phenomenal over from Bumrah. Just 18 runs in the last 3 overs for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Hardik Pandya (3-0-23-1) to bowl the 18th.

16.51

Fuller in length again, on middle and leg, tucked away down to deep square leg for a single. 200 up for RCB in 16.5 overs.

16.40

Another golden dot ball. Bumrah nails the straight yorker, and all Sharma can do is get his front leg out of the way and jam the bat down in time. 5 runs so far off 4 balls.

16.30

A slower bumper now, bowled into the pitch and outside off. Jitesh tries to reach it and hook it away but misses.

16.24

FOUR! Beautifully struck. Overpitched by Bumrah, on middle, Jitesh Sharma backs away early and crunches the ball through covers for a boundary.

16.11

Slower one on the stumps, punched through mid on for a single.

This has been a good little phase for MI as two set batters are gone in a quick span. With Kohli first and now Patidar gone, Jitesh Sharma walks in at number 5. Also, Jasprit Bumrah (2-0-16-0) is back on.

OUT! CAUGHT! Wonderfully bowled by Mitchell Santner and even the MI skipper is absolutely delighted. Tossed up, full and drifted into the leg stump, Rajat Patidar looks to go deep in the crease and swing it over deep mid-wicket but gets cramped for room and ends up lifting it down the throat of the man at long on. Tilak Varma makes no mistake and MI get another timely wicket. 185/1 becomes 194/3 for RCB.

15.50

Darted in, on off and middle, Patidar only manages to jam it back to the bowler.

15.51wd

WIDE! This time it will be a wide. Floated up, wide outside off and this one goes beyond the tramline.

15.40

Fired in full and down the leg side, Patidar just hops out of the way as a wide is called. Mitchell Santner isn't happy with the call and feels that the ball is passing within the new guideline and a review is taken. The third umpire checks the replays and finds that it is indeed a fair delivery.

15.34

FOUR! Edged away but Rajat Patidar won't mind as he brings up his fastest FIFTY in the IPL according to Ravi Shastri on air, off just 17 balls. Slow and short outside off, turns away, Patidar goes hard at it but gets a big outside edge that goes wide of the keeper and rolls away into the third man fence.

15.21

In the blockhole again, around middle, Tim David drives it down to long off and picks up a single.

15.11

A full and wide one, Santner lands it right on the popping crease. Patidar hangs back and digs it out through covers for one.

STRATEGIC BREAK! 5 overs left, 187 already on the board. Surely, RCB will be targeting a score of around 240-250 here, but MI have their trump card as well. Jasprit Bumrah has a couple of overs up his sleeve, and those two overs could be the difference. Rajat Patidar is already on a roll and Tim David has form with him. Let's see how this engrossing innings eventually pans out. Mitchell Santner to bowl after the break. 3-0-36-0 are his bowling figures so far.

Time for Tim David to come in? Yes, David does walk out to bat next, after waiting eagerly around the boundary ropes.

14.4W

OUT! FIFTY AND OUT FOR KOHLI! Royal Challengers Bengaluru are 185/2 as this 65-run stand is broken. Full toss outside off at 135 kph. Kohli goes for the big one down the ground but loses the shape at the moment of contact. The bat twists in his grip, and it flies to the right of Suryakumar Yadav near the rope. It dips on him, but he moves well, bends low to his right and takes a clean catch just inches above the ground. Kohli has to go and is upset with himself.

14.31

Jags in from a good length, on middle and leg. Rajat Patidar is a bit rushed on the pull shot and inside edges onto the pads. The ball deflects to the off side in front of square for a single.

14.21

FIFTY FOR VIRAT KOHLI! Off 37 balls. Back of a length, slanted into the batter, Kohli stands tall and heaves it to deep square leg for a single to get to his milestone.

14.10

A muted appeal for caught behind, but not given. Kohli, on the other hand, takes the review for wide not given. This is bashed on a length, angled at the leg pole. Virat Kohli gets inside the line a bit to pull but the ball is high enough and he misses. Ball Tracking comes up with the graphic and it shows that it is above the shoulder but below the head height. So, it is deemed a fair ball.

Time to give Jasprit Bumrah an over? No, not yet. Hardik Pandya brings himself back into the attack.

Can Trent Boult finish the over without conceding any more boundaries?

13.61wd

WIDE! Too straight, down leg, full in length. Kohli misses the flick. There have been a flurry of extras from MI tonight.

13.51

Cannons in a full ball, in front of middle. Rajat Patidar tries to smash the leather out of his presence, but gets an inside edge past the leg stump. The ball rolls into the square leg region for a single.

13.41

Dishes out a low full toss, on off, Kohli holds his shape and forces it down to long off for one.

13.31

Very full and outside off, Patidar squeezes it behind backward point for a single.

13.26

SIX! Goodness me, it's mayhem at Wankhede tonight! This is the 12th six of the inning already. Misses the yorker by a slight margin, on the stumps. Rajat Patidar is camped deep in the crease, and with lightning quick hands, he deposits it into the stands behind long off for a cracking six.

13.21wd

12.54

FOUR! PUNISHED! Thakur slips in a full toss, outside off. Virat Kohli takes it on the full and spanks it over the bowler's head for a boundary down the ground. He moves to 45 from 32 balls.

12.42

Much fuller and outside off, Virat Kohli carves it past point and hares back for the second.

12.31

Wide full toss, Patidar slaps it through cover for a single.

12.31wd

WIDE! Slower bouncer, angling away outside off. Patidar gets onto his toes and looks to slash it away, but the ball is well above his head.

12.26

SIX! The ball is just going the distance! Full and wide again, outside off. Patidar frees his arms and slices it over backward point for a big six.

12.21wd

WIDE! Rajat has managed to put the bowlers off their lengths in just a handful of balls. Short and slow, sitting up wide outside off. Patidar fancies his chances, goes hard at it, and misses completely. The umpire takes a moment, then spreads his arms wide.

An interesting question was posed by Simon Doull on air in the previous over. Simon said that Tim David is standing next to the fence around the RCB dugout, which might also be a message to Virat Kohli to either get going again, or they might be tempted to retire him out. We did see it happen to Ayush Mhatre last night, even when he had scored a brisk half-century. It is a ruthless game, but it would need big courage to do that with Virat for the RCB think tank.

12.21wd

WIDE! Again, it is served far outside the tramline, on the off side. Rajat ignores.

12.14

FOUR! Not from the middle of the bat, but enough! A juicy full toss on the stumps. Rajat heaves it across, but does not time it well. Still, he finds the gap at deep mid-wicket and deep square leg for a boundary.

12.11wd

WIDE! Shardul keeps flirting with the guideline and serves it beyond it, on a fuller length. Rajat Patidar goes for a slog sweep by shuffling a long way across but misses. Wide called.

11.36

SIX MORE! And again! Patidar goes big. Pitched full again, on off. Rajat Patidar sits down and sweeps it aerially. Loses his balance and falls over on the pitch, but manages to power the ball into the crowd behind deep square leg. Patidar rushes to 16 from just 3 balls.

Rajat Patidar walks in at number 3 for RCB.

10.5W

OUT! HIT FLAT AND GONE! Shardul again, with his golden arm, strikes in his first over. Looks at the heavens in relief. He hurls in an overpitched delivery and keeps the line of attack outside the off stump. Phil Salt does not get properly under it, in an attempt to smash it over cover, and ends up hitting it flatly off the bottom end toward Hardik Pandya. The MI skipper takes a step back and takes a sharp catch over his left shoulder at the edge of the ring. Breaks the 120-run opening stand of RCB.

10.41

Full toss outside off, Kohli heaves across the line, but gets off the inner part of the bat, between long on and deep mid-wicket for a single.

10.32

Low full toss, outside off. Virat Kohli smashes it straight down the ground and it crashes on the stumps at the non-striker's end. It deflects away to long off and they get a couple of runs.

10.20

Kohli shuffles a bit to the off side as Shardul nails the wide yorker. Virat fails to shovel it out.

10.21wd

WIDE! Similar line and length, goes outside the guideline. Kohli, this time, stays put and throws his bat at it, but misses to get the connection.

A dot to finish, still 10 runs off it. Full and outside off, Salt drills the cover drive straight to the man at cover.

Looks like Salt has hurt himself while diving. He is holding his stomach and needs a bit of a breather. Hydrates himself and the physio is out there as well. Good to continue now.

9.51

Oh, nearly a run out. Dug in short over middle, Virat Kohli reaches for it and pulls it towards deep mid-wicket for a run. Salt thinks the second run is on and sets off but Kohli sends him back. Tilak Varma fires in a throw towards the keeper but Salt dives and makes it in before Ryan Rickelton dislodges the bails. However, Salt seems to have hurt himself in the process.

9.41

Did that carry? Superb effort from Trent Boult, but he's actually collected the ball on the half-volley and doesn't even appeal for the catch. Pandya bowls it on a length around off, Phil Salt looks to lift it all the way over deep cover but miscues it badly. The ball goes over the infield as Boult comes charging in and puts in a slide to pouch the ball with both hands. Just a single.

9.36

SIX! This time Salt does connect. Full toss on the pads, Phil Salt is taken by surprise but manages to whip it off the pads and the ball flies over deep square leg for a six.

9.20

Swing and a miss! Back of a length, over off stump, Salt looks to hang back and have a swipe across the line but the ball stays a shade low and beats the bat.

9.12

Good fielding in the deep. A wide yorker, Salt squeezes it out firmly to the left of deep point, where Mayank Markande runs across the turf quickly and cuts it off, keeping it down to a brace.

Change in bowling. When in trouble, the team looks upon the skipper and here's Hardik Pandya back into the attack. He replaces Mayank Markande. And as per Pommie Mbangwa on air, this is RCB's highest opening partnership against MI at the Wankhede Stadium.

Virat Kohli sits down to play the big slow sweep and ends up hitting it flat and wide of deep mid-wicket, where Naman Dhir runs around and springs across to his left but only gets a hand on it. The ball goes for a boundary.

8.50

On a length, wide outside off, just inside the tramline. Kohli watches it all the way and opts to leave it. It is called a fair delivery but Kohli has reviewed it for a wide. The third umpire has a look and finds that some part of the ball is inside the guideline, FAIR DELIVERY.

8.44

FOUR! Full and straight, Virat Kohli uses the bottom hand well and whips the on-drive back past the bowler and with immense power to pick up a boundary. 100 comes up for RCB, in just 8.4 overs!

8.31

Slower through the air, shorter as well, Salt cuts it to deep point and turns the strike over.

8.21

Flighted ball on off, Kohli goes for the slog-sweep but ends up dragging it towards long on. The ball falls in front of Suryakumar Yadav in the deep and Kohli picks up a single.

8.10

STRATEGIC BREAK! We all need a breather, don't we? But more than us, it's the Mumbai Indians who need to recalibrate their plans. This looks like a belter of a wicket and Salt has literally dined on it. The margin of error is so little when a batter plays in such a good nick. Kohli, on the other hand, is playing his natural game, just pouring the strike back to Salt in what's been a blazing opening stand for RCB. With 95/0 on the board in just 8 overs, things look ominous for MI already, but it takes one breakthrough to turn things upside down. That was traveling as well, had there been no protection. Down leg on a fuller length. Salt slogs it to short fine leg and finds the fielder.

A slight appeal for LBW, but not given. Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya both feel confident that it is sliding down leg. Instead, the UltraEdge later shows a big, fat inside edge. Angling in full and swinging from outside the leg stump. Kohli goes for the flick, gets nowhere near it, and gets an inside edge onto the pads before it rolls to the third man region for a single.

A low full toss, on middle, Salt heaves off the inner half and wide of mid-wicket for a single.

2.46

SIX! That's called transferring your pain and making the bowler hurt. Short of a length, on top of middle. Phil Salt stays put and nails the pull shot into the crowd behind deep mid-wicket. This is Phil Salt's 350th T20 six as shown on the on-air graphic.

Phil Salt takes a blow to the groin region and initially, he brushes it off. However, moments later, he is down on his haunches and in a bit of pain. The physio is out, not sure how much he can help, just a few deep breaths and wait for the pain to subside, and soon enough, Salt is good to go again.

2.30

1.10

0.20

On a length, around middle and leg, swinging back into the batter. Kohli looks to work this around the onside but gets beaten and is hit on the thigh pad.

We are underway in Mumbai with a quick single from the bat of Phil Salt. Trent Boult hits the hard length first up, around middle and leg, Salt stays leg side and pushes this in front of the fielder at mid on and takes a quick single to get off the mark. The throw did come towards the non-striker's end and rattled the stumps with a direct hit but the batter was safely in.

All in readiness now. The umpires are out in the middle, and so are the players of Mumbai Indians. It will be the pairing of Phil Salt and Virat Kohli to open the innings for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Trent Boult has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. A slip in place to begin with. Let's play...

We are almost ready for the action to begin. However, the players will first observe a minute's silence and pay their respects to legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away earlier today. The players will also be wearing black armbands.

The RCB skipper - Rajat Patidar says that they would have bowled first as well, but feels that the pitch will remain consistent throughout the game. Adds that the way they recovered with the bat in the last game was a big positive. Mentions that whenever they come here to play, they enjoy playing in front of this crowd. Informs that they have one change in the team as Jacob Duffy comes back in for Josh Hazlewood.

The captain of MI - Hardik Pandya says that it’s always good to bat second in Wankhede, and for that reason, they will be bowling first. Adds that it’s a big game for them and they will try to play their best cricket. After being asked about the pitch, with a laugh, Pandya says that they asked the curators to make good wickets and they are getting it anyway. Shastri then asks Hardik whether MI have opted to chase after their last game's result. On that, Hardik says that indeed that is the reason, but at Wankhede, the dew also comes in after the first inning and they want to make it their advantage. Ends up saying that Mitchell Santner comes in place of AM Ghazanfar, and Mayank Markande joins the playing XI for Deepak Chahar.

Impact Sub options for MI - Sherfane Rutherford, Corbin Bosch, Ashwani Kumar, Raghu Sharma, and Raj Bawa.

Mumbai Indians (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton (WK), Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya (C), Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner(In for AM Ghazanfar), Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Mayank Markande (In for Deepak Chahar).

Impact Sub options for RCB - Rasikh Salam, Venkatesh Iyer, Jacob Bethell, Swapnil Singh, and Mangesh Yadav.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Playing XI) - Virat Kohli, Phil Salt, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar (C), Tim David, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Romario Shepherd, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jacob Duffy (In for Josh Hazlewood), and Suyash Sharma.

TOSS - Toss time at the Wankhede. Ravi Shastri welcomes the two captains - Hardik Pandya of MI and Rajat Patidar of RCB. Pandya gives the coin a flick and Patidar calls 'Tails.' It lands as 'Heads.' Mumbai Indians will BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Pommie Mbangwa is inspecting the deck. He starts by talking about the dimensions and says that there is a bit of bias in terms of the square boundaries, as one side, it is 67 meters, and on the other, it is 61 meters, with the straight hit being 74 meters. Adds that it is a ground where plenty of sixes are hit. Former Indian captain, Sunil Gavaskar, joins him and talks about the deck, saying that there will be plenty of runs scored, but there will also be a bit of help early on for the seamers as there is a good covering of grass on the good length area. He reckons that the pitch looks slightly dry but thinks that it won't turn much, and Pommie ends by saying that the team batting first should be targeting a score of around 220, as these days 200 isn't enough on a track like this.

Expectations? The home side, led by Hardik Pandya, is hungry to defend their fortress and climb the table after a mixed start. On the other side, Rajat Patidar's RCB arrives with the confidence of champions, looking to silence the Mumbai faithful. With modern-day greats like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli facing off, expect nothing less than a masterclass in T20 cricket. Stay tuned for the toss and team news.

A plethora of stars - Tonight is more than just a game, it's a battle of legacies. On one side, you have the obvious Mumbai vs Bengaluru city rivalry, then there are a couple of all-time Indian and IPL greats - Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, playing for opposite teams. Add to that the rivalry of the two brothers, Hardik and Krunal Pandya, and someone like Jasprit Bumrah, arguably this generation's greatest bowler, against another all-time IPL great, Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Too many mini battles within the actual battle and we are all for it.

Blue vs Red - In life and in sport, either one favors Blue or Red, and there are countless examples, especially in a sport like Football - Manchester City vs Manchester United (Blue vs Red), Chelsea vs Arsenal (Blue vs Red), and there are plenty of others too. Just like that, even in the IPL, there's MI vs RCB (Blue vs Red), and if you prefer one over the other, it's very likely that you want the team in the other jersey to not just lose, but lose badly. On that note, welcome to the iconic Wankhede Stadium for a clash that defines the spirit of the IPL! It's Match 20 of the 2026 season, and we are witnessing the ultimate rivalry as the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians, host the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

... MATCH DAY ...

A rivalry renewed at Wankhede - The stage shifts to the iconic Wankhede Stadium as Mumbai Indians take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Match 20 of IPL 2026. One of the league's most storied rivalries returns, with MI holding the historical edge 19-15, though RCB have kept it tight in recent years, winning 3 of the last five. The defending champions RCB began their campaign with two strong wins before stumbling away from home, while MI have had a mixed start, one win followed by back-to-back defeats. With both teams packed with superstars, this clash carries both history and high stakes. RCB's firepower and depth - Royal Challengers Bengaluru have already shown why they are the defending champions, their batting depth has been nothing short of remarkable. In the last game, they recovered from 125/7 to post 201/8, highlighting their never-say-die approach. Rajat Patidar's fifty under pressure stood out, and he continues to establish himself as one of the best spin-hitters, alongside Devdutt Padikkal, who controls the middle overs. Remarkably, all of their top five except Phil Salt have registered fifties this season, with Tim David's explosive 70* off 25 still fresh in memory. The Salt-Kohli opening duo, averaging over 40, sets the tone, while Kohli's 980 runs against MI underline his dominance in this rivalry. Add Romario Shepherd's power, even in limited opportunities, and this is a batting unit that keeps coming. Bowling boost and balance - The return of Josh Hazlewood is a massive boost for RCB, strengthening an already effective attack. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has quietly picked up four wickets, while Suyash Sharma has been key in the middle overs. Krunal Pandya's experience has stood out, delivering double-wicket overs in back-to-back games with smart, tactical bowling. This balance between control and wicket-taking ability gives RCB an edge, especially in crunch moments. MI searching for rhythm - Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, are still searching for consistency. Rohit Sharma (118 runs) and Ryan Rickelton (98 runs) have been their best batters, though most of those runs came in the opening game. Suryakumar Yadav has shown glimpses with a fifty, but Tilak Varma and Sherfane Rutherford are yet to make a significant impact, while Naman Dhir has chipped in with useful cameos. Captain Hardik Pandya will need to step up with both bat and ball to bring balance to the side. Bowling questions and key match-ups - MI’s bowling has been inconsistent. Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar need to find rhythm, though Allah Ghazanfar impressed with a two-wicket haul in the last game and could hold his place. Jasprit Bumrah, surprisingly wicketless in three games, remains a huge threat, especially against RCB, having picked up 24 wickets against them, including his maiden IPL scalp of Virat Kohli. If Bumrah finds his rhythm, it could shift the balance quickly. Team form (Last 5 completed games, recent first) - MI - LLWLW | RCB - LWWWW. Wankhede factor and what to expect - Wankhede is synonymous with high-scoring thrillers, true bounce, short boundaries, and dew in evening games make it a paradise for batters while testing bowlers' discipline. With RCB's deep batting and MI's explosive potential, this promises to be another run-fest. In a rivalry defined by big moments and big names, expect nothing less than a blockbuster.
