Earlier, Australia had a productive start to the day, losing two wickets but maintaining a strong scoring rate in the first session. Nathan Lyon, who had been given a reprieve on the last ball of Day 2, continued to capitalise on his luck and ticked along nicely. After the departure of Lyon and Khawaja, Travis Head initially struggled but managed to weather the storm, ensuring stability alongside Cameron Green until Lunch. The visitors experienced an unexpected collapse in the second session, where they lost their last six wickets for just 37 runs to be bowled out for 164. Nathan Lyon made a positive start to Australia's bowling effort by dismissing Tom Latham and Kane Williamson on either side of the Tea break. Travis Head soon got into the act to cut short the stay of Will Young. Pat Cummins rotated his bowlers well in search of more inroads but they were kept at bay by the Kiwi pair and they had to be content with 3 wickets for their efforts.

As far as New Zealand are concerned, they were in search of early wickets to start the day on a positive note. They were made to wait by the two Aussie batters until Matt Henry saw the back of Lyon just after the half-hour mark. Once they got the breakthrough, the Kiwis were able to tie both ends up and mount the pressure on the batters. Glenn Phillips bowled well in tandem with William O'Rourke, with the former being rewarded for keeping things quiet with the wicket of Khawaja. However, towards the end of the session, New Zealand allowed the Aussie batters to release the pressure, but all in all, it was not a bad session for them. The hosts will look to dry up the boundaries in the afternoon session in their quest to bowl Australia out and not allow them to run away with the game. SESSION SUMMARY - 100 runs, 27 overs, and 2 wickets. A good session for Australia, one where they lost two wickets but scored at a good clip to be strongly placed in the Test. It was a steady start to the day for them as they resumed their innings with a lead of 217 runs. Having been dropped on the last ball on Day 2, Nathan Lyon continued to ride his luck early on and played his shots to keep the runs flowing. Usman Khawaja was happy to perform the conservative role and held firm at the other end. Lyon fell nine runs short of his maiden Test fifty, resulting in the arrival of the centurion from the first innings, Cameron Green. Khawaja got into his shell and perished in trying to release the pressure. Travis Head had a nervy start to his inning, but the southpaw did well to hang in there and successfully saw through that phase before Lunch with Green. Australia's lead has swelled to 317 runs and with still eight sessions left in the game, they would want to bat for as long as possible.
