Commentary

Righ then, that is it from this entertaining game where the Kiwis remain unbeaten in the tournament while Bangladesh lose their second match in a row. However, the focus now shifts to the biggest clash as arch-rivals, India and Pakistan take on each other with a lot at stake. That game will be played on 14th October, Saturday at 2 pm IST (8.30 am GMT), but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up to the game. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Kane Williamson, the victorious skipper of New Zealand starts by saying that he doesn't know the extent of that thumb injury and will get a scan done tomorrow but informs that the knee is feeling better. Goes on to say that it was a brilliant performance from the guys and it was tough for batting at times and it was nice to get a partnership. Mentions that mid-way through the first Powerplay, they knew that it was better to hit the deck hard and that worked out well. On Lockie Ferguson, he says that it was a good showing and on this surface, the pacers did the job and it was a team bowling effort. On his knock, he says that it was nice to get through the initial phase and build partnerships and the batters who came in finished the job well. On Daryl Mitchell, he says that Daryl comes in and plays some big knocks for the team and he did that once again.

Najmul Hossain Shanto is in for a quick chat in place of an injured Shakib Al Hasan. He says that Shakib has gone for the scans and they will know more when the results are in. Adds that they didn't bat that well and the first 10-15 overs proved to be crucial. Tells that the wicket seemed to be good but the batters need to take more responsibilities. Praises the fast bowlers for their efforts and says they showed good character. Mentions in the previous game, they didn't bowl well but if they continue like this, it will definitely help them going forward. Ends by saying if they bat well in the next game, it will be a completely different ball game.

Lockie Ferguson is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his fiery spell earlier in the game. He says that it was a classic team performance from the Black Caps with the ball and is happy to have contributed to it. Adds that compared to Hyderabad, there was a lot more bounce and he looked to keep the batters on the back foot and get them out. Mentions that it's early stages for sure but they are certainly enjoying their time out in the middle and will look to continue in the same way. Also adds that he hasn't played here much, so, it was nice to see some pace and bounce and hopes it remains the same against Afghanistan as well.

Presentation Time...

Earlier in the game, after being asked to bat first, Bangladesh posted a fighting total on the board. They were struggling at 56/4 but the two most experienced campaigners, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim got them out of that difficult situation with a 96-run stand where the latter registered a good fifty as well. Then Mahmudullah too used his experience well towards the fag end of the innings to get them to get them to that total. Lockie Ferguson was the pick of the bowlers for the Kiwis with three wickets while Matt Henry and Trent Boult got a couple each. Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips chipped in with one each too. The wicket did not get any easier under the lights but a fighting half-century from skipper Kane Williamson in his comeback match and yet another excellent innings from the ever-so-dependant Daryl Mitchell got them over the line quite easily in the end.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, gave a good account of themselves while defending this target. Mustafizur Rahman and Shoriful Islam started brilliantly under lights and did not give anything away really while also getting an early breakthrough. It would have been even better if Mehidy Hasan managed to hold on to what would have been an exceptional catch of Devon Conway. They kept the Kiwis quiet in the Powerplay but failed to pick up more wickets. Their spinners also bowled economically and managed to put pressure on the batters with the dot balls, and Shakib Al Hasan broke the big stand by getting rid of Devon Conway. However, they dropped a few too many catches in between and when you give lives to batters like Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell, you are bound to be punished and that is exactly what happened here. In the end, they just did not have enough runs to play with and fell to another big defeat.

New Zealand got off to a slow and steady start but lost in-form Rachin Ravindra quite early. Kane Williamson and Devon Conway managed to ride the storm from the Bangladeshi pacers and did not give their wicket away. They took their time and added 80 runs together before Conway lost his patience and got out. However, their skipper looked as determined as ever and kept the scoreboard ticking along with Daryl Mitchell who got some help from the fielders as well. Mitchell tried to be aggressive right from the start which made things a bit easier for Williamson who went on to register a fine fifty in his first game of this World Cup. The skipper had to retire hurt for 78 runs after getting hit on his left thumb, but Mitchell changed gears really well and remained unbeaten on 89 off just 67 balls and finished the job along with Glenn Phillips to top off a professional performance.

The Black Caps make it a hat-trick of wins and keep the winning momentum going for them in this World Cup. They also maintain their perfect record against Bangladesh in ODI World Cups and get their sixth win over them. Bangladesh have a lot of rethinking to do now as they look to get back on track in this tournament.

SIX! BANG! Daryl Mitchell finishes things off in style and seals another easy win for New Zealand. Shoriful Islam pitches this one right up in the slot around off, angling it across. Mitchell stays deep in his crease and shimmies across the stumps before thumping it over the wide long on fence for a biggie. Mitchell remains unbeaten on 89 and New Zealand win by 8 wickets.

42.41

Full again, right in the blockhole around off, Glenn Phillips jams it out back past the bowler and picks up a single.

42.30

Full and on the stumps, mistimed back to the bowler.

42.20

Almost gets chopped on here! Takes a bit of pace off it and bowls it on a nagging length in the channel. Glenn Phillips looks to punch it off the back foot but gets an inside edge that goes over the stumps. Phillips swings his bat quickly in order to keep the ball out but in reality, he had no idea where it was going.

42.11

Banged in short and angles it across the off stump. Daryl Mitchell goes across the off stump and looks to power it over cow corner but mistimes it down to wide long on for a single. New Zealand one big hit away form the win now!

A single is taken.

41.20

Quicker, short and around off, Glenn Phillips taps it towards short covers.

Daryl Mitchell now seems to be struggling a bit with his fitness due to the heat and humidity. The trainer is out to have a look and stretch that hamstring and Mitchell is back on his feet. The umpires are keeping a close look on these stoppages and trying to get things moving. After a few moments, we are good to continue.

Commentary

We are back for the run chase! The umpires walk back out to the middle as the players of Bangladesh are seen in a huddle before taking their places on the field. No Will Young, so, it will be Rachin Ravindra to open the innings for New Zealand alongside Devon Conway. It will be Mustafizur Rahman to start proceedings off with the new ball here. Let's play...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Bangladesh do have something to defend but it certainly looks below par and New Zealand will be itching to go on and get their third win of the competition. Also, the head-to-head in World Cups stands 5-0 in favor of the Kiwis, so, Bangladesh will need a performance of a lifetime with the ball and in the field to cause an upset here. Do join us in a few minutes to see how the chase unfolds.

Trent Boult, who brought up 200 ODI wickets in this game is down for a quick chat. Boult talks about the milestone first and says that some will say he is into the stats but confirms that he isn't much into the stats. Adds that you don't play the game for that but it is nice to tick things off like that. Tells that it took him two and a half years to perfect the knuckle ball but it helps when you have bowled around you who can bowl that well. Mentions that the wicket was a bit tougher than expected and reckons 250 was par on this wicket. Ends by saying that Bangladesh batted well but hopes that they can get over the line here.

Bangladesh have got something on the board but it was another inconsistent batting display. Their best batter from the previous game, Litton Das played a very rash shot on the first ball of the game and put his side under pressure right away by throwing his wicket away. Tanzid Hasan and Mehidy Hasan stitched together a decent stand with the latter playing some good shots as well but both got out in a space of less than four overs which meant Bangladesh needed someone to get them out of jail. Mushfiqur Rahim played that role and along with a scratchy Shakib Al Hasan put on a vital 96-run stand. Just as Shakib was getting into a bit of rhythm he too got out but Rahim did go on to score yet another half-century before getting out. There was no upping of the ante or any sort of momentum in the final 10 overs and Mahmudullah who came in at number 8 had to toil long and hard before getting a few big shots away. For the first time in a World Cup game, Bangladesh hit eight maximums but couldn't even get to 250 runs.

End of another fine bowling display from New Zealand but Bangladesh do get 20 runs off the final couple of overs and have limped to 245 runs here. Not the typical Chennai wicket and for a change, it was the pacers who were able to extract some bounce and carry off the deck. A wicket off the very first ball from Trent Boult got the Kiwis going but they had to wait for a bit for the next wicket. It was Lockie Ferguson who peppered the opposition with short balls and picked up a couple of quick wickets. The middle phase was proving to be wicketless for New Zealand but once again Ferguson came in and broke a crucial stand to open the floodgates. From there, the Kiwis kept up the ante and ensured that Bangladesh were restricted to an under-par total. Ferguson ended with 3 with Trent Boult and Matt Henry picking up a couple each and Boult became the third quickest to get to 200 ODI wickets.

49.51

No he can't! This is another slower delivery, full and outside off, Mahmudullah tries to reach for it but only manages to bunt it towards long off for one falling over in the process. Shoriful Islam to face the last ball.

49.41

A slower one now, full and around off, Shoriful Islam slices it towards sweeper covers for a run. Can Mahmudullah take Bangladesh over 250?

49.31

OUT! TAKEN! Another one bites the dust! The short delivery proving to be the downfall of another Bangladeshi batter. Henry bangs this onto the pitch, on middle, angling in and takes pace off as well. Mustafizur Rahman once again backs away to pull it away but is late on the shot and takes his eyes off and is in no position for that shot. As a result, it goes off the top edge high in the air towards the square leg region where Tom Latham runs to his left and dives to pouch it safely into his gloves. Bangladesh nine down now!

Drinks break! It's been a fast and furious first 15 overs of the game but at the moment, New Zealand are firmly in the driver's seat. The pitch looks stark in contrast from the last game at this ground but the Kiwi pacers have been able to extract good pace and bounce, especially Lockie Ferguson, picking up a couple of wickets as well. The Bangladeshi batters have played a few unnecessary shots and a lot relies on this experienced pair of Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim to get them to safer shores. A slight halt in the play as the umpire signals a no ball for the bails being knocked over at the bowler's end but Glenn Phillips thinks it is only a no ball when the bails are knocked over off the hands. Phillips asks the umpires to check and the replays show that it is the back leg that knocks over the bails and the third umpire confirms that it doesn't necessarily have to be the hands and the no ball call stands. Free Hit to follow as well.

Tanzid Hasan looks to flick and gets a tickle on it. The ball goes quickly to the right of Tom Latham who springs across and gets a glove on it but the ball runs away to the fine leg fence. Tanzid survives and gets off the mark as well.

OUT! TAKEN! What a start! Well, no one was expecting that to happen on the very first ball. Trent Boult comes from over the wicket and serves a good-length ball around middle, angling it away. Litton Das looks to be aggressive and put Boult under pressure by stepping out and decides to whip it away off his hips. The ball goes flat toward deep backward square leg where Matt Henry comes in and times his jump well to take a sharp catch. Boult is ecstatic and Das has to depart for a golden duck here.

Done with the pre-match formalities! We can see the New Zealand players in a huddle and now they spread out to take their respective field positions. Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan are the two openers for Bangladesh. Trent Boult has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

We are moments away from the start of the game but before that, the players from both sides line up for their respective national anthems. It will be Bangladesh's first followed by the national anthem of New Zealand.

Bangladesh (Playing XI) - Litton Das, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan (C), Mehidy Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (WK), Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah (In place of Mahedi Hasan), Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Kane Williamson (C) (In place of Will Young), Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham (WK), Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult.

Shakib Al Hasan, captain of Bangladesh says that he was a bit confused but don't mind batting first. Adds that the pitch looks good and the ball would come on nicely onto the bat. Tells that you win some, you lose some but it is important to how you come back and play well. Mentions they did no start well with the bat nor with the ball against England and need to be better in the Powerplay. Informs Mahmudullah replaces Mahedi Hasan.

Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand says that they will have a bowl first with potential dew in the evening. Adds that he was able to take part in the warm-up games and is happy to be back in the team. Mentions that there have been a number of positives and ends by informing that he replaces Will Young in the side.

TOSS - The coin lands in favour of Kane Williamson and New Zealand have elected to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Michael Atherton is pitchside and says that the pitch is a bit off-center and the short boundary on one side is just 59 meters with the straight boundary being 76 meters. Sanjay Manjrekar joins him and says that the pitch looks like a stark contrast to the one in the India-Australia game and it is a much better batting surface. Reckons that Bangladesh might have enjoyed more of a turning wicket against the Kiwis but will be happy.

UPDATE - Huge news coming from the Kiwis camp as Kane Williamson is all set to make his return in this game and will lead the side.

Bangladesh have been fairly hard to beat in home conditions in bilaterals in the last few years and will feel the surface they are playing on in this game is quite close to what they would get back home. They do have a win under their belt but are also coming into this game on the back of a thrashing. The bowling has enough depth in it to trouble any opposition and it's all about the application with the bat and that has been lacking. Will we witness Bangladesh notch up a huge win? Or will the Kiwis make it three wins out of three? We shall find out in due course. Toss and team news in a bit.

New Zealand have started their campaign with a couple of fairly straightforward wins and look like a well-drilled side as they always do in big events. The top order is firing and a couple of bowlers are in really good form. They do have a couple of headaches as both Kane Williamson and Tim Southee might be available for this clash and if they do tinker with the playing XI, who will come in and who will be benched? We'll have to keep a close eye on that.

Hello and a warm welcome to Match number 11 of the 2023 Cricket World Cup where New Zealand will be taking on Bangladesh in a crucial clash at the Chepauk Stadium in hot and humid Chennai. Two teams who will enjoy playing on this surface given one team's prowess against spin and the other team being filled with spinners and it should be an entertaining clash.

... MATCH DAY ...

The 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup caravan is back in Chennai for Match number 11 of this long tournament where high-flying New Zealand will meet an inconsistent Bangladesh side at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in a big clash. The Kiwis have started the tournament with a couple of astounding victories and have hardly broken a sweat in doing so. After thrashing reigning champions England, New Zealand made lightwork of the Netherlands to zoom to the top of the table. Their top order remained in fantastic form as an under-par Will Young too managed to have a solid outing. The middle order did see a couple of batters mustering valuable runs but will look to plug a few small holes that were visible in the latter half of their innings. With the likes of Kane Williamson and Tim Southee expected to be fit for this clash, the coaching staff have a real headache if they want to tinker with the playing XI or not. Moving to their bowling, a couple of names are a no-brainer with Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry proving to be really consistent and their wicket-taking ability gives them that X-factor. Trent Boult has been a shade under his best and Lockie Ferguson who did feature in the previous game wasn't at his best either. This opens up the door for Tim Southee or even Ish Sodhi given the nature of the track in Chennai to make the cut. Bangladesh on the other end were on the receiving end of England's wrath in the previous game and it was their batting that was a big question mark even though they conceded 350+ runs. The top order needs to fire and the likes of Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto need their form leading up to the tournament to really shine at the big stage. The middle order does have some experienced names but Towhid Hridoy seems like the most consistent batter. The form of Mustafizur Rahman has been a sign of worry in recent times but Shoriful Islam on the other hand is only getting better. They do have a plethora of spinners and will look to make the most out of the spin-friendly conditions in Chennai to cause an upset. Can the Bangla Tigers roar and win big? Or will the Black Caps continue on their merry way? We shall find out.
