Commentary

Right then, that is it from this one-sided affair where New Zealand get their second win of the tournament while Netherlands succumbed to yet another defeat. However, the action in the World Cup continues on 10th October, Tuesday where we will be treated with a double-header. The first game will see England take on Bangladesh at 10.30 am (5 am GMT) while in the second match, two Asian rivals, Pakistan and Sri Lanka go up against each other. That game will begin at 2 pm IST (8.30 am GMT), but as you know, you can join us early for all the build-up to both games. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Tom Latham, the victorious skipper of New Zealand says that they still would have bowled first but did a very good job with the bat early on and it was backed up by the bowlers too. Adds that any time out in the middle is valuable and they were able to build multiple partnerships and even though they didn't manage it perfectly, they were able to get big runs in the final five overs. Mentions that the guys bowled brilliantly and tried to be proactive with the changes and applaud Mitchell Santner's effort. On Lockie Ferguson, he says that it is a pretty long tournament and it's good to see him get a good outing. Ends by saying that they have had a good start and will look to continue the same down in Chennai in their next game.

Scott Edwards, the captain of Netherlands says that they were good with the ball for most parts of the game but just that last few overs gave them the momentum. Tells that they hoped to restrict the Kiwis around the 280-mark but it wasn't to be. Mentions that you can't really chase 320+ scores with 40s and 60s and they needed some partnerships and someone to make a big score. Says there were some positives but they made the same mistakes as their first game and will look to learn from it and give their best in the next game.

Mitchell Santner is adjudged the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his five-wicket haul and a cameo with the bat. He says that the boys batted well and got them the platform and they were able to contain the opposition well with the ball. Mentions that the nature of the surface suited him and personally he reckons he didn't bowl at his best but managed to pick up wickets. Adds that he has been lucky to be playing in  India consistently over the last few years, watching Ravindra Jadeja as well. Also says that every time you play here you get experience and the wicket was a bit slower and the Dutch spinners too bowled well. Ends by joyfully saying that he enjoys his batting as well.

Presentation Time...

Earlier in the game, after being asked to bat first, New Zealand posted a big total on the board courtesy of fine fifties from Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, and Tom Latham. Daryl Mitchell also contributed well but it was Mitchell Santner's quick-fire 36 runs off just 17 balls at the death that gave the momentum to the Kiwis. For Netherlands, Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren, and Roelof van der Merwe picked up two wickets each while Bas de Leede chipped in with one. While chasing, it was a similar performance from Netherlands as against Pakistan. There were a couple of good knocks but they failed to put in a collective effort which was needed to chase this huge total.

New Zealand, on the other hand, will be happy with their bowling effort but they will want to improve their catching and fielding which is not something that you say often about the Black Caps. Trent Boult bowled up top without rewards and it was Matt Henry who got the early breakthrough. Once the spinners came in, they gained full control of the game and rarely gave anything away. Although, they allowed a couple of stands they knew that to maintain it the batters had to take risks, and that went their way. Even though they dropped a few catches and missed run-out chances as well, they had enough quality to still create more wicket-taking opportunities which they ultimately took to take down their opponents. Mitchell Santner was fantastic with the ball and ended with a brilliant five-wicket haul while Rachin Ravindra got one too. Lockie Ferguson bowled economically as well but it was Henry again who finished the job by picking up the last couple of wickets to confirm the win for the Kiwis.

The openers once again failed to provide a strong start to Netherlands as they were dismissed for low scores. It was Colin Ackermann who came in and gave himself some time to settle in. Once he did that, he was able to keep the scoreboard ticking and found the odd boundary here and there. He along with Teja Nidamanuru managed to build up a decent stand of 50 runs but a massive miscommunication in the middle cost the latter his wicket as they went further on the back foot. Ackermann went on to register a good half-century but perished for 69 off 73 balls trying to keep up with the required rate. Their skipper, Scott Edwards showed some fight too but couldn't hang around for long. The debutant, Sybrand Engelbrecht also got some runs but with no real support from the tail, they ultimately fell short by a huge margin.

Another clinical win for New Zealand as they make it two in two to start their World Cup campaign. They have dismantled Netherlands with a 99-run victory and are emerging as one of the early favourites for this competition.

OUT! BOWLED'EM! Matt Henry wraps up proceedings in style for the Kiwis! Bowls it pace on at just over 131 clicks but nails the in-dipping yorker. This one is bowled on middle but tails in a bit late as Aryan Dutt is caught flat-footed and the ball goes through bat and pad to castle into the stumps. Henry finishes off with three wickets and New Zealand rack up another big win by 99 runs.

OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! The short ball has worked for Lockie Ferguson but credit must also go to Devon Conway for an excellent catch in the deep. Ferguson bangs this short once again, on middle, Sybrand Engelbrecht goes for the pull but gets a bit hurried and fails to get the elevation as the ball flies in the air wide of deep square leg where Conway is well inside the from the ropes and puts in a spectacular dive to his right to take the catch. New Zealand one wicket away from the win now!

Commentary

We are back for the run chase! The umpires and the players are back on the field and it will be Vikramjit Singh to open the innings alongside Max O'Dowd for Netherlands. Trent Boult has been handed the new ball and is raring to go. A couple of slips in place, let's go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Netherlands need 323 runs to win and what a famous win it would be if they do get there. New Zealand though do have some world-class bowlers in their ranks and it will be interesting to see if the dew plays a role later on or not. Join us for the exciting run chase in a bit.

Paul van Meekeren is down for a quick chat. He says that he is happy with his bowling effort but would have liked to be better. Adds that he was just trying to execute his plans. He says that at one point, it was looking like the score would be around 350 and they wanted to restrict them under 300, but in the end, they got somewhere in the middle. Jokingly says that he doesn't want to give a lot away on the wicket of Daryl Mitchell as the Kiwis might be listening. Mentions he just wanted to bowl at the stumps. Further adds that the boys gained confidence in the qualifiers chasing big totals and they have chased 374 against West Indies so he is confident about the batting unit.

Netherlands will be a bit gutted to have lost all the momentum in that last over as they bowled fairly well in the final 10 overs but now need their greatest effort with the bat in an ODI run chase to get the victory here. The wickets were fairly shared between the bowlers but the likes of Aryan Dutt and Paul van Meekeren used the slowness of the pitch well on a few occasions. Bas de Leede proved to be dependable once again but was put to the sword in the final over by Mitchell Santner. They had a chance to restrict New Zealand to under 300 runs but will still feel that they are in the game.

The Kiwis started slowly but soon enough both openers got in the groove and put on 67 runs for the first wicket before Devon Conway got out. Will Young and Rachin Ravindra then stitched together another solid partnership as both batters brought up half-centuries and Daryl Mitchell too made an useful contribution of 48 runs. After being 238/3m in 40 overs, they lost 3 wickets in the next 5 overs which pushed them back but skipper Tom Latham scored a fighting half-ton and in the end one lusty blow from Matt Henry and a very handy cameo from Mitchell Santner took the Kiwis to a good total.

What an end to the first innings! A really good battle between bat and ball in the first half of this match but at the halfway mark, it will be New Zealand who will go into the dressing room feeling much better thanks to those fireworks from Mitchell Santner in the final over.

He sees the batter come down the track and fires this full and outside off, Sybrand Engelbrecht is halfway down the pitch and fails to reach it as Tom Latham collects and breaks the stumps. Sybrand Engelbrecht starts walking back but the umpires ask him to wait as they want to check for the stumping.

Just short! Or is it? The umpires want to make sure if that is a catch or not. Bas de Leede lads this short and around leg, with no pace at all, Tom Latham moves across to hook it away but gets a top edge as the ball loops up and just lands in front of the gloves of Scott Edwards who dives to his left to take it. OUT! CAUGHT! The pressure was building on Mark Chapman and he has succumbed. Flighted delivery, around off and turning away a bit. Mark Chapman makes room to go inside-out over extra cover but it takes the outside half his bat. The ball flies behind point and the ever-so-athletic Roelof van der Merwe sprints behind to take the catch with a dive. Mark got too far from the line of the delivery and that brought his downfall. New Zealand need to be wary here, another wicket and they could waste a few balls towards the end.

41.50

Given CAUGHT BEHIND! Has Bas de Leede struck on consecutive deliveries? Mark Chapman is quick to review the decision. It's a shortish delivery, on middle and leg and going down the leg side, Chapman fails to flick but there is some noise as it goes to the keeper. The UltraEdge comes into the picture and there is no spike coming from the bat. It's off the thigh pad. Mark survives.

Mark Chapman walks out to bat at number 7.

41.4W

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Bas de Leede gets a wicket and it's yet another big blow to the Black Caps given the hitting prowess of Glenn Phillips in the death overs. A 134.2 kph length delivery, landing outside off and carries a hint of outward movement behind it. Glenn shows zero footwork as he tries to blast it through covers but all he gets is an outside edge and Scott Edwards makes no mistake behind the stumps. A good phase of play for the Dutch team, they are certainly looking to end things on a high.

MISFIELD AND FOUR! A good effort but that in a way has cost the Netherlands a boundary. Paul pitches it up and around off, Glenn Phillips drives it through the line and the fielder from extra cover tries to stop it with a dive. He gets a touch on the ball and that deflects it past mid off where the fielder gets wrong-footed as he was anticipating the ball to his left. 8 from the over along with the wicket of Daryl Mitchell!

OUT! BOWLED! A clever change in pace from Paul van Meekeren and he has struck right at the beginning of the death overs. A big wicket. This one pitches on a shortish length at 122.6 kph and stays a bit low. Daryl Mitchell hangs on the back foot to have a swing at it across the line but is first beaten for the lack of pace and then for the lack of bounce. Done with the pre-match formalities! We can see the Netherlands players in a huddle and then they spread out and take their respective field positions. Devon Conway and Will Young are the two openers for New Zealand. We will see spin straightaway as Aryan Dutt has the new ball in hand. Let's play...

The two umpires walk out to the middle followed by the players of both sides who now line up for their respective national anthems. It will be Netherlands' first followed by the national anthem of New Zealand.

The New Zealand captain, Tom Latham says that they would have had a bowl as well and it looks like a decent surface but will now look to put runs on the board. Adds that it was a fantastic game last time around and the bowlers and the partnership between Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra was an excellent one. Ends by informing that they have one change as Lockie Ferguson comes in for James Neesham.

Scott Edwards, the skipper of Netherlands says that they will bowl first. Adds that from the earlier game, it seemed like bowling conditions are better and dew is not a factor as well. Tells that they are at a good level and will try to cash in win games. Informs they have two forced changes as Saqib Zulfiqar and Logan van Beek miss out.

Netherlands (Playing XI) - Vikramjit Singh, Max O'Dowd, Colin Ackermann, Bas de Leede, Teja Nidamanuru, Scott Edwards (C/WK), Sybrand Engelbrecht (On debut) (In for Saqib Zulfiqar), Roelof van der Merwe, Ryan Klein (In for Logan van Beek), Aryan Dutt, and Paul van Meekeren.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Devon Conway, Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham (C/WK), Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Trent Boult, and Lockie Ferguson (in for James Neesham).

TOSS - Up goes the flip of the coin and it lands in favor of Netherlands. They have elected to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Ian Bishop is pitchside. He says that there is a nice breeze coming through and it is 69m and 62m on either side square of the wickets. Katey Martin joins him and says that the pitch looks like a batting paradise and it's a good day to be a batter. She reckons that the spinners might be important for either side but even more so for Netherlands.

Netherlands are a gritty side and they have shown it in the Qualifiers leading up to the mega event and they gave it their all against Pakistan in their opening fixture. There were a few notable individual performances but it was Bas de Leede who was their best player with runs and wickets both in his kitty. They do have the players to cause an upset but just need it all to come together for a longer period in the game. Can they hand the high-flying Kiwis an unlikely defeat? Or will New Zealand breeze through this game as well? We shall find out. Toss and team news in a bit.

New Zealand come into this fixture on the back of a thumping victory against reigning champions England. It was a near-perfect game for the Kiwis as they restricted a powerful English batting lineup to about 280 runs on a surface that suited batting. Matt Henry and Mitchell Santner were the chief architects of their stellar bowling and then Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra hit twin tons to make a mockery of the run chase. They will be hoping to continue in the same fashion and given a couple of the injured players are available for selection, we might see a change or two in the side.

Hello and a warm welcome to one and all! We are at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad where New Zealand will be going up against Netherlands in Match 6 of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. Two teams who have had contrasting starts to the tournament but both have shown some promising signs and we sure are to get a good game in.

... MATCH DAY ...

The 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup is off to a flier and with all teams having featured at least once, it is now time for the second round of fixtures. An in-form New Zealand side takes on Netherlands at the Rajiv Gandi International Stadium in Hyderabad and even though it's early in the tournament, this could be a vital contest for both sides. The Kiwis played their fixture up in Ahmedabad in a repeat of the 2019 final and absolutely demolished one of the favourites England. They were missing the likes of their talismanic skipper Kane Williamson along with pacers Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson but that didn't seem to stop them one bit. Matt Henry had a fabulous outing with the ball along with Mitchell Santner. Trent Boult also managed to pull things back later on but it was the added advantage of part-time spinner Glenn Phillips that really turned the tide in the first innings as Phillips picked up two massive wickets. With the bat, Devon Conway struck a big ton surpassing the 150-run mark and with him Rachin Ravindra too notched up a classy century, marking his presence on the biggest stage. Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson are most likely to be fit for this clash but if they get a spot in the starting XI is a question mark. Williamson in all likelihood is to be rested for this game too as he continues to recover. Talking about Netherlands, they threatened Pakistan at times in their opening fixture at the same ground. Bas de Leede was their best player on the field as he took 4 wickets and even scored a fighting half-century later in the game. They seem to have a decent bowling attack with the likes of Aryan Dutt and Logan van Beek showing consistency. Batting will be a bit of an issue and skipper Scott Edwards himself would like to get into a bit of form. The Netherlands do have the positive of having already played in Hyderabad and will look to notch up a famous win. The Kiwis will be absolutely pumped up and full of confidence and would like to get back-to-back wins under their kitty. Who are you backing?
