Commentary

Right then, that is it from this quite entertaining game where Netherlands fought hard but it Pakistan who got over the line in the end. The action continues in this World Cup as we have a double-header lined up for us on 7th October, Saturday. The first game will be between two Asian rivals, Bangladesh and Afghanistan at 10.30 am IST (5 am GMT) while in the second match, South Africa takes on Sri Lanka, and that game will start at 2 pm IST (8.30 am GMT), but as you know you can join us early for all the build-up to both games. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

The victorious captain of Pakistan, Babar Azam says that the way Hyderabad has supported them is really good to see and the players have enjoyed this hospitality. Adds that he is satisfied with the result. Credits his bowlers and says it was important to take wickets in the middle overs. Praises Saud Shakeel and Rizwan for their batting after losing three quick wickets. Says the way Saud built his innings shows his improvement and the bowlers stuck to the plan as well.

The skipper of the Netherlands, Scott Edwards says that it was a bit disappointing. Mentions that they bowled and fielded well. Feels that they were par and had a good chance at 120 for 2. Shares that Bas de Leede is a quality player in all three departments. Adds that he played an awesome innings and needed someone to be with him. Informs that he has not spoken to Logan van Beek yet and needs to see where he is at. Feels that this was a game that got away.

Saud Shakeel is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his knock of 68 runs off 52 balls on his World Cup debut. He starts by thanking the almighty. Mentions that he is very pleased and tries to follow the basics. Shares that there were nerves but he looked to be positive. States that the talk with Rizwan was to stay positive. Feels that he was fortunate to get early boundaries which helped him. Also says that he had been working hard on his game and utilised his basics. Ends by thanking the coaches and the support staff for their support.

Presentation Time...

Earlier in the game, after being forced to bat first, Pakistan struggled initially but posted a good total on the board courtesy of two fine fifties from Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan and some late contributions from Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan. Bas de Leede was the pick of the bowlers for Netherlands with a four-wicket haul while Colin Ackermann got a couple as well with Aryan Dutt, Logan van Beek, and Paul van Meekeren chipped in with one as well. While chasing, it was Bas de Leede again along with Vikramjit Singh who showed some fight, but they needed way more from the other batters to challenge the quality bowling of Pakistan.

Pakistan, on the other hand, would have hoped for a better effort but would be happy that they got the job done in the end. Shaheen Afridi struggled a bit with the new ball but Hasan Ali was excellent and provided the early breakthrough. The decision from Babar Azam to give the ball to Iftikhar Ahmed proved right as he picked up a wicket on his very first delivery. However, after that they let Netherlands build a partnership and come back in the game, but Shadab Khan broke that stand, and Haris Rauf delivered the magic with the old ball and got two wickets in the same over to get them on top again. It should have been three in the same over but Iftikhar dropped a sitter which fortunately didn't affect them that much. Afridi followed it up with one more. Bas de Leede was proving to be a tough nut to break for them, but a peach of a delivery from Mohammad Nawaz got rid of him which took them close to the two points. Hasan Ali and Haris Rauf closed the game for them by picking up the remaining wickets.

Netherlands didn't get off to the start that they were looking for as they lost Max O'Dowd quite early. Vikramjit Singh and Colin Ackermann steadied the ship for a bit but the latter couldn't stick around for long. However, after Bas de Leede came in, he looked in great touch and along with Singh stitched up a really good partnership of 70 runs, and in the process, both registered their half-centuries as well. This put Netherlands back in the game, but Singh got out right after his half-century which started a mini collapse for them as they went from 120 for 3 to 158 for 6. Their only hope, de Leede tried to fight a lone battle at the other end but without much support, he too perished soon after. The tail hung around for a bit with Logan van Beek hitting a few lusty blows in the end, but ultimately they fell short by 81 runs.

Pakistan start their World Cup campaign with an excellent win! However, it was not at all an easy one as Netherlands really gave a good account of themselves with both bat and ball, but in the end the quality that the Men in Green possessed proved to be a bit too much for them.

Commentary

We are back. The Pakistan players are in a huddle near the ropes before they disperse. They are joined by the two Dutch openers. Vikramjit Singh and Max O'Dowd will open the innings for the Netherlands. Shaheen Afridi is at the top of his mark and is raring to go. Two slips in place. Let's play...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, the match is evenly poised at the halfway mark. It should get easier to bat under lights but Pakistan have the resources to defend the total. No team has ever chased a 280-plus score against Pakistan in ODI World Cups. Can the Dutch batters rise to the challenge? We shall find out when we return for the chase.

Roelof van der Merwe is in for a chat. He says that they executed their plans well and kept Pakistan under pressure with their fielding throughout. Praises Aryan Dutt for his opening spell. Mentions that there are always going to be partnerships under the lights as it gets a bit easier to bat on. Says that a good start should do it for them. Ends by saying that you get a bit grumpier as you get old but he is happy with the performance from him as well as the team.

After being asked to bat by Scott Edwards, Pakistan were off to a nervy start in their batting effort. Fakhar Zaman departed cheaply yet again and the departure of Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam in the space of 5 deliveries sent the cat among pigeons early. Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel then joined hands and began resurrecting the innings with a positive intent. Thanks to a 120-run stand between these two, Pakistan began to breathe again. After the wicket of Shakeel, Pakistan started to lose their way and it looked like they would get rolled over quickly. However, Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan had other plans as they got together and kept the scoreboard ticking. Their dismissals pegged Pakistan back again before a 19-run stand for the last wicket took them over 280.

A job well done by the Netherlands to bowl Pakistan out for 286! The Netherlands opted to start with the off spin of Aryan Dutt from one end and although it did not fetch them a wicket, he managed to keep the batters in check. Logan van Beek was equally good from the other end and even dealt an early blow. His fellow pacer Paul van Meekeren struck with his first delivery to remove the other opener before an inspired bowling change in the form of Colin Ackermann got the big wicket of Babar Azam. In the middle phase, they were stalled by the gritty stand between Shakeel and Rizwan. The Netherlands came roaring back with two quick wickets but were unable to run through the Pakistan lower order. They did pull it back but Scott Edwards will feel that Pakistan have got more runs than they should have. Bas de Leede was the star of the show with figures of 4 for 62 from his nine overs.

OUT! STUMPED! A fantastic piece of glove work from Scott Edwards! That is it for Pakistan then. Colin Ackermann sees the batter advance down the track and fires this one full and outside off, Haris Rauf is way out of his crease and tries to reach it but fails to do so, Scott Edwards collects it and shows quick reflexes to dive to his left to break the stumps with Rauf well outside the crease. The replay confirms it and Pakistan have been bowled out for 286.

Nawaz sets off for the run but is sent back when he is halfway down the pitch, the fielder throws it towards the bowler's end where the ball hits Colin Ackermann on his boots and rolls away towards mid on. Now, the batters go for the run again as Ackermann runs towards mid on, picks up and hits bullseye at the batter's end with Nawaz well short of his crease. Pakistan nine down now!

Is that out? An appeal for run out against Mohammad Nawaz has been sent upstairs. And yes, the replays confirm that Nawaz is short of his crease.

Done with the pre-match formalities! Netherlands players have already taken up their respective field positions.  Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq are the two openers for Pakistan. We will see spin straightaway as Aryan Dutt has the new ball in hand. Let's play...

The two umpires make their way out to the middle followed by the players of both sides who line up for their respective national anthems. It will be Netherlands' first followed by the national anthem of Pakistan.

Pakistan (Playing XI) - Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam (C), Mohammad Rizwan (WK), Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf.

Netherlands (Playing XI) - Vikramjit Singh, Max O'Dowd, Colin Ackermann, Bas de Leede, Teja Nidamanuru, Scott Edwards (C/WK), Saqib Zulfiqar, Logan van Beek, Roelof van der Merwe, Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren.

Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan says that reception in India has been really good and they are looking after us well. Adds that everyone is enjoying their time and they believe in their openers Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman while Haris Rauf, Shaheen Afridi, and Hasan Ali are the pacers for this game. Reckons a score of 290-300 runs will be good on this wicket.

The skipper of the Netherlands, Scott Edwards says that they will bowl first. Adds that it is a pretty good wicket and hold together throughout the game. Mentions that it will be easier to bat under lights. Shares that they have played a lot against Pakistan and are looking forward to another close clash. Feels that it will be about adjusting and seeing what the pitch does. Ends by saying that they have quality pacers and spinners.

TOSS - The coin lands in favour of Scott Edwards and Netherlands have elected to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Pommie Mbangwa is pitchside. He starts by saying that it is a beautiful outfield and batters will get value for their shots. Informs that the square boundaries are in the 60s range and the straight boundary is 75 metres long. Shane Watson joins him and says that it is a really good wicket. Adds that the surface is rock hard with a little bit of dryness. Feels that the ball will go through nicely for the pacers and there will be a little spin on offer as well. Reckons that the ball will slide nicely onto the bat under lights. Adds that the team batting second will have an advantage.

On the other hand, the Netherlands are the only Associate nation to feature at this World Cup in India. In what is their fourth ODI World Cup appearance, they will be hoping to pull off a few upsets and make a statement on the big stage. In the warm-up game against Australia, the Dutch batters were tested by Mitchell Starc, and they will have their work cut out here against Shaheen Afridi. With the ball, Logan van Beek, Roelof van der Merwe, and Bas de Leede were impressive, which should give them confidence. Can the Men in Orange cause a major upset? Or will Pakistan get their campaign up and running? Stay tuned to find out. The toss and team news coming up...

Pakistan come into this tournament on the back of a disappointing run in the Asia Cup, and in the build-up, they suffered losses in both warm-up games as well. The positive for the Babar Azam-led side is that they have played both warm-up games in Hyderabad and would have acclimated to the conditions here. The experienced duo of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are in solid form, and their pace attack is as lethal as any team in this competition. However, their openers have not provided the starts that are expected from them, which is cause for concern.

Hello and a warm welcome, folks, to match number 2 of the 2023 ODI World Cup between Pakistan and the Netherlands at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Pakistan head into this game as favourites, but expect the Netherlands to give it their all and pose a strong challenge to the Asian side. Moreover, after last night's result, this World Cup is bound to throw up surprises, and who knows, we might have another surprise in store for us here.

... MATCH DAY ...
