Right then, that brings us to the end of the group stage games, and the four teams to qualify for the playoffs of the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League are Gujarat, Chennai, Lucknow, and Mumbai. Bangalore will be absolutely disappointed with their effort as they had their fate in their own hands. Gujarat will now move to the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai to face the Yellow Army on their own turf in Qualifier 1 and that game will take place on Tuesday, 23rd May. The first ball will be bowled at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) but do join us for the build-up which begins well in advance. Until then, goodbye and cheers!

Shubman Gill is Player of the Match for scoring 104 runs in 52 balls at a strike rate of 200. He says that he has been in good form and he has happy to make his starts count to get some big ones. Mentions that he has been missing out earlier in the tournament as he was unable to convert his scores. Adds that he kept applying himself and kept his belief. Informs that the new ball was holding up but got and they had to work for the runs but it got easier later. Goes on to say that with the rain, the ball was getting wet so it was difficult for the bowlers to get a grip. When asked what he spoke about to Vijay Shankar, he claims that he was trying to hit hard so he told him to hold his shape and time his shots instead. Stated that once he found momentum, he can hit the ball a long way. Reckons that he knows his game and he tries to be in that area while playing so it allows him to build on that. Ends by saying that it is exciting to play Chennai in Chennai and they have a good bowling attack so hopefully they can win that game to make it to the finals.

Hardik Pandya, the skipper of Gujarat says that the calmness in the chase was terrific and adds that they wanted to keep the winning momentum intact. Feels that they have ticked all boxes. Mentions that it is difficult to bowl to Shubman Gill and other batters get confidence from him. Shares that they would have taken 197 at the start. Says that it was a special inning from Virat Kohli but feels that they went to death bowling very early. Reckons that this year was a different challenge and credits the boys for putting their hands up.

Time for the presentations...

Shares that it wasn't easy against the new ball and says that Shubman Gill showed everyone how to bat on different wickets. States that he has been practising his bowling in the nets but with six bowling options, he has not been used. Feels that they have the firepower to chase big totals. Reckons that it will be very special to play against Chennai on their home ground in the qualifier.

Faf du Plessis, the skipper of Bangalore says that he is very disappointed with the result. Adds that Gujarat are a strong team and it was an amazing innings by Shubman Gill. Mentions that there were one or two areas where they were a little off. Shares that the conditions were wet and there were a lot of issues gripping the ball in the second innings. States that Virat Kohli played an unbelievable knock which gave them a chance. Also says that their top order contributed well throughout the season but they were a little light in the middle order. Adds that they bowled well but could not get many wickets in the middle overs.

Time for some interviews...

Bangalore’s batting effort was all about Virat Kohli as he notched up his seventh Indian T20 League century which is the most in the Indian T20 League by a batter and his second in consecutive games. They did get off to a great start scoring 62 runs for no loss in the Powerplay but lost a bunch of wickets and looked like there was another collapse on the cards. Virat Kohli built a 47-run partnership with Michael Bracewell and an unbeaten stand of 64 in 34 deliveries with Anuj Rawat to get them close to the 200-run mark. The spinners for Gujarat were good with Noor Ahmad claiming two wickets and Rashid Khan with a crucial wicket of Glenn Maxwell. Mohammad Shami and Yash Dayal chipped in with a wicket each but their death bowlers proved to be far too expensive. Their batters did a remarkable job though to compensate for the shortcomings of their bowlers and this is what makes a champion side.

Mohammed Siraj was at his fiery best as he looked really dangerous and was eventually rewarded with a wicket but the rest of the bowlers could not keep the runs down in the Powerplay. They went wicketless for almost 12 overs till Vyshak Vijay Kumar broke the partnership and gave his side a glimmer of hope. Harshal Patel looked to be at his best as he executed the slower balls to perfection and conceded just 18 runs in his first three overs along with a wicket. Mohammed Siraj returned to claim another wicket in the death overs and kept the home fans believing but Harshal was a touch expensive in his fourth over as he conceded 11 runs in the penultimate over leaving Wayne Parnell 8 runs to defend in the last six balls. Shubman Gill needed one ball with the help of a couple of extras to seal the game and send the hosts packing.

Gujarat were off to a circumspect start as Wriddhiman Saha seemed to be struggling to get any bat on the ball. He played some streaky shots but was dismissed soon after and Vijay Shankar, who came on as an Impact Player, also seemed to struggle at the wicket. Shubman Gill at the other end seemed to be batting on a different pitch though and continued to play some crisp shots. He raced to his half-century and Vijay Shankar also managed to get there albeit with some good luck as the two of them added 123 runs for the second wicket. Shankar departed right after reaching his fifty and Dasun Shanaka could not make much of an impact. David Miller could not fulfil his role of seeing the game through but who needs a finisher when you have the baby GOAT? He saw Virat Kohli get back-to-back centuries and decided to do one better by getting it in a winning cause.

The Prince has dethroned the King by trumping his knock! Bangalore have lost this game to the special talent of Shubman Gill! They are now eliminated from the competition and there is stunned silence around the ground! It means Mumbai will be the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs and they have a young superstar to thank for making it possible. Bangalore looked to be in a comfortable position at the halfway stage but were not clinical enough with the ball to put this game to bed. The Gujarat juggernaut rolls on as they register their 10th win of the season and enter the qualifiers with the winning momentum intact. They look like a formidable team and are definitely favourites to defend their title.

SIX! THAT'S IT! Shubman Gill has done it for Gujarat as well as Mumbai! Wayne Parnell bowls it full and outside off, Shubman Gill gets this one in the slot and smokes it over long on for a biggie. Brings up his second hundred in a row and takes Gujarat over the line. Joy on the faces of Gujarat players but despair on the faces of the Bangalore players and fans. Gujarat win by 6 wickets!

19.11wd

WIDE! Goes full but too wide, outside off, Shubman Gill lets it go for a wide. Faf du Plessis challenges this decision and goes for the review. The replays show that the ball was outside the tramline and it will stay as a wide delivery.

NO BALL! Oh no! Parnell loses his grip and spays an above-waist full toss, outside off, Shubman Gill leaves the ball alone. The umpire signals a wide initially which is challenged by Gill as he thinks its a no ball for height. The replays show that the ball was clearly over the waist and a Free Hit will follow now.

Commentary

We are back for the chase. The two Gujarat players make their way out to the middle followed by the Bangalore players. Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill are the two openers for Gujarat. Himanshu Sharma comes on as Bangalore's Impact Player, replacing Dinesh Karthik. Mohammed Siraj has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

...  THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Bangalore will be the happier of the two sides at the halfway mark. Virat Kohli's unbeaten century has powered them to a total they will be confident of defending. On the other hand, Gujarat are one of the most successful chasing sides and they do have the resources to chase down this total. Can Hardik Pandya and Co. get over the line and do a favour to Mumbai? Let's find out as the chase is not far away...

The man of the moment, Virat Kohli is in for a chat. He says that once they were five wickets down, they knew Anuj was the last recognized batter and feels they did well to pull things back. Reckons that a score close to 200 is a winning total and teams have not been able to chase successfully here in the past. Adds that it is now on the bowlers to get the job done. Claims that many feel his cricketing ability is declining but he does not feel so. Mentions that this is how he plays T20 cricket by finding the gaps and hitting boundaries. Says he has told in the past that he plays the situation and sees where the game is which allows him to play accordingly. Feels that he is happy with his game and how he is playing. Informs that spin has a part to play as the ball is getting stuck in the wicket so they needed to hit the gaps and take twos. Goes on to say that if they restrict the boundaries and not allow the opponents to run twos, they will be well on top of the game. Ends by saying that he did not ask about weather or the forecast and want to be there in the moment to make the most of the situation which has put them in a good position to win.

After Hardik Pandya called it right and opted to bowl first, their new ball bowlers were unable to start well and allowed Bangalore to get off to a blazing start. They pulled things back nicely after the Powerplay and had Bangalore on the ropes at 133-5. However, they were unable to find any answers to the brilliance of that man, Virat Kohli. They failed to bowl well during the death overs and now have a mighty target to overhaul. Rashid Khan was their most economical bowler on the night with figures of 1 for 24 from his four overs.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man! We have witnessed another Virat Kohli masterclass this evening! It is Bangalore who have finished on a high and ended up with a daunting total on the board. At the start, their reliable opening pair of Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis showed signs of intent straightaway and got the hosts off to a flying start. However, the dismissal of their skipper triggered a mini-collapse for them during the middle overs. Michael Bracewell steadied the ship somewhat with Kohli but could not carry on. Despite losing wickets at the other end, Kohli stood strong and stroked his second consecutive century. Towards the end, Anuj Rawat played a quickfire cameo and stiched a 64-run stand with Kohli to help Bangalore cross the 195-run mark.

19.54

This means it will be a single and Virat Kohli will be on strike.

19.11

TWO CENTURIES IN CONSECUTIVE MATCHES FOR VIRAT KOHLI! This is bowled on a good length and in line with the stumps. Virat Kohli pushes this towards long on and takes an easy single. He raises his bat in celebration but knows that he still has some work to do here.

UPDATE - 8.17 pm IST (2.47 pm GMT) - The start time has been delayed to 8.25 pm IST (2.55 pm GMT). The Bangalore openers have their full gear on and are sitting in the shed by the boundary line as they look eager to get on the field. Just to fill you in on the qualification situation, Bangalore need to win to qualify. For Mumbai to qualify, Gujarat need to win or there needs to be no result in this match.

UPDATE - 7.59 pm IST (2.29 pm GMT) - Sigh! It has started to drizzle again and the covers are back on. Having said that, only the pitch has been covered for now which means it is just a light drizzle. The ground staff are waiting with the heavy covers at the boundary line and waiting to see if the intensity picks up.

Faf du Plessis, the captain of Banglore says that they would have chosen to chase as well but that is due to the weather. Adds that batting first is good on this wicket so hopefully they can win. Mentions that they had two good games and the guys are motivated. Claims that they are a starting with a strong team and they will look to do their best. Reckons that in this competition if you're not at your best, it can cost you games. Informs that Himanshu Sharma comes into the side in place of Karn Sharma.

Hardik Pandya, the skipper of Gujarat, says that they will bowl first. Adds that it looks like a good track and says that he is not sure how the weather will hold up. Mentions that nothing changes for them and they believe in winning games and playing good cricket. Also says that they cannot take anything lightly and adds that this game is as important as Qualifier 1. Ends by informing that they are playing with the same team as the last game.

UPDATE - 7.24 pm IST (1.54 pm GMT) - So the news from the Wankhede is that Mumbai have registered a comfortable 8-wicket win with 2 overs to spare. This means Rajasthan are now eliminated from the competition and there are just two teams contending for the final playoff spot. There is some good news for the Bangalore fans who have been crestfallen with this result. The covers are coming off at the moment, and the players are warming up on the field. The ground staff is doing an excellent job with the super sopper hard at work and the toss will happen at 7.45 pm IST (2.15 pm GMT). The game will begin at 8 pm IST (2.30 pm GMT) so stay tuned for the toss and team updates.

UPDATE - 7.10 pm IST (1.40 pm GMT) - Unfortunately, the drizzle is back, but it looks more like the stop-and-start type and we want to be optimistic here. The Bangalore players are out on the balcony and looking at the sky as Mumbai seem to be easily trotting across the finish line. They need 11 runs in 19 balls and should be a routine chase now with 8 wickets in hand.

UPDATE - 7 pm IST (1.30 pm GMT) - Some good news coming our way as the drizzle seems to have stopped and the ground staff has made their way out to the middle to work on the covers. They will work on drying the field and there do not seem to be too many puddles courtesy of the outstanding drainage system here at the Chinnaswamy. The umpires have also made their way out to assess the conditions and are having a word with the curator. The cut-off time for a 5-over game is 10.56 pm IST (5.26 pm GMT) which is ample time to have a result so there are positives to take. We will bring you more updates shortly.

UPDATE - 6.50 pm IST (1.20 pm GMT) - There was heavy rain towards late afternoon but the intensity has reduced considerably. It is still drizzling on the ground currently and the center patch is covered but the super sopper is in hand in case the rain subsides. Mumbai are motoring along in their run chase as they have a target of 201 well within sight. They are 148 for the loss of one wicket in 13 overs and just need 53 runs in 42 deliveries. This is not good news for the home supporters and they will be praying for some reprieve here. There will be a delay in the toss but in the meantime, you can switch tabs and catch the closing stages of match number 69. Do join us for further updates.

On the other hand, Gujarat became the first team to qualify for the playoffs and will look to enter the business end of the competition with a win behind them. Shubman Gill has been their most consistent player by far and he will once again be crucial to the visitors' chances. In the bowling department, different individuals have put their hands up when it has mattered and would like to continue the good work. Can Gujarat dent Bangalore’s playoff chances? Or will we see the hosts become the last side to qualify? We will find out soon. Let us not forget that neither team could win here as rain could be the eventual victor. Stay tuned for further updates as we will keep you posted on what the situation on the ground is.

Out of the three teams in contention for the playoffs currently, Bangalore are the only team who have their destiny in their own hands courtesy of a superior net run rate. However, is their fate truly in their hands? It seems not as the rain gods have decided to be a part of this. If Mumbai lose against Hyderabad, a win will suffice for the hosts or even a washed-out game but if the boys in blue defeat Hyderabad at the Wankhede the home fans will be praying for a game to be played. If the game progresses, the batting department and mainly the top order will once again have to do the heavy lifting as the team is heavily reliant on them. Their pacers have found form and will hold the key in this game against a strong opponent.

The last game of the league phase in the 2023 Indian T20 League is upon us and there is still one playoff spot up for grabs. Hello and a warm welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to our coverage of match number 70 of the 2023 Indian T20 League, where Bangalore take on Gujarat at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The plot thickens in this super exciting edition as we have no idea which way this last game will go and which team will clinch the fourth place on the table. Could we ask for a better finale for the group stages?

... MATCH DAY ...

What a journey it has been through the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League as we finally arrive at match number 70 which will be the last game in the group stages of what has been an enthralling competition so far. With three teams already through to the playoffs, there are teams still in contention of making it to the top four and the result in this game will have massive consequences for the final standings. Bangalore are hunting for qualification playing their final game at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and will face off against the reigning champions who are already through as they sit on the summit of the table and will play in Qualifier 1 at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai against the home side. Gujarat have carried their form from last season into this edition and have nine wins in the 13 games they have played so far. To lose just four matches in a competition as strong as this one shows that they are a well-established unit now and are favorites to clinch the title in consecutive seasons. Their forte has been to come back from a defeat much stronger as they showed in the last match against Hyderabad where they won by a comfortable margin of 34 runs to follow up their defeat against Mumbai. They will be slightly worried about the way their batting order collapsed as they lost 8 wickets for 40 runs but the bowlers did their job to help register a win. Shubman Gill continues to be in sublime form and has a century to show for it but the management will be worried about Wriddhiman Saha heading into the business end of the competition. They looked to try their bench strength as Sai Sudharsan and Dasun Shanaka were got into the side for Vijay Shankar and Abhinav Manohar but lost stability in the middle order with David Miller and Rahul Tewatia not clicking. Mohammad Shami continued his remarkable run with yet another four-wicket haul and Mohit Sharma has grown from strength to strength as the competition has progressed. Noor Ahmad and Rashid Khan have formed a lethal spin-bowling duo and Yash Dayal has managed to find his place back into the side after the drubbing he received at the hands of Rinku Singh. The hosts have seven wins so far and a win here by a good margin should see them qualify for the playoffs. They are heavily dependent on Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis who have added 1240 runs between them and are by far the most devastating opening pair in the tournament. Glenn Maxwell has also contributed with crucial runs but the rest of the middle order has found it tough to get the runs though they have very little to do with how their top three is batting. Wanindu Hasaranga's injury has left them short in the bowling department but their pace bowling unit is well-equipped despite missing Josh Hazlewood in the last couple of games. Mohammed Siraj has led the attack brilliantly and Wayne Parnell has done a job when called upon with Harshal Patel regularly chipping in with wickets. By the time the game begins, Bangalore will know exactly what they need to achieve to go further in the competition and the conclusion of this fixture will give us the final qualifier team. Will Bangalore make it four consecutive playoff appearances with a crucial win? Or will Gujarat ascertain their superiority over an opponent they have not faced in this edition? We will find out soon.
