Commentary

We are back for Bangladesh's reply. South Africans are in a huddle near the ropes before they spread out to take their respective positions. It will be Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan to open the innings for Bangladesh. Quinton de Kock has not come out as he is suffering with mild cramps and it will be Heinrich Klaasen with the gloves. Marco Jansen will start with the new ball for South Africa. Off we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, South Africa have a mammoth total on the board and they are on course to topple New Zealand to climb to the second spot in the standings. It will require something special from Bangladesh batters if they are to get over the line here. Can they do the unthinkable or will South Africa cruise to another big victory? Back in a bit to find out.

David Miller is in for a chat. He says that it is a really good wicket to bat on. Adds that he had the job in hand to hit the big ones as he came in with 5 overs left. He adds that the slower ball is sticking on the surface a little. He finishes by saying that he has enjoyed batting alot in his recent form and says that maturity comes with age to understand the strengths about his own batting.

As far as Bangladesh are concerned, they were switched on from ball one, which was visible on the field. They needed a good start with the ball against the strong South African batting unit. It went according to plan for them thanks to early breakthroughs from Shoriful Islam and Mehidy Hasan. In the middle phase, the spinners did well not to leak boundaries, but they were stalled by the gritty stand between Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen. Having dismissed Markram, Bangladesh had hopes of pulling things back. It wasn't to be as they stood answers to the onslaught from Quinton de Kock, David Miller and Heinrich Klassen. Even after getting rid of de Kock, they failed to wrestle the initiative back and just could not finish strongly with the ball. Mehidy Hasan had only a wicket to his name but he was Bangladesh's most economical bowler on show.

Earlier in the day, it was South Africa's stand-in skipper Aiden Markram who called it right and opted to put runs on the board. South Africa were rocked early with the loss of Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen inside the first eight overs. Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markam then got together and laid a solid foundation for their side. Markram took his time initially, but having been there from the start, de Kock made sure not to miss out on loose deliveries. Markram got out on 60, but de Kock carried on and brought up his third hundred of this World Cup. The southpaw went into overdrive after breaching the three-figure mark, and he, along with Heinrich Klaasen, unleashed themselves all around the park. After de Kock's departure, Klaasen continued the blitzkrieg and ensured that at no point did the innings lose steam. Coming in at number 6, David Miller did what he does best and it would have been a dream innings for South Africa had Klaasen not got out on his individual score of 90. Nonetheless, they will be the happier of the two sides at the halfway mark.

South Africa absolutely love batting at the Wankhede Stadium, don't they? 399 against England, and 382 now against Bangladesh. The de Kock-Klaasen show has helped the Proteas post their fourth straight 300-plus total while batting first at this World Cup and their seventh straight 300-plus score while batting first in ODI cricket.

All the players are out for the start of play. The umpires take their positions for the first ball of the match to be bowled. It's Quinton de Kock in his 150th ODI alongside Reeza Hendricks to open the batting for South Africa. Mustafizur Rahman to start the attack for Bangladesh. Let's play!

Both the teams and the officials are out for the National Anthems. It's Bangladesh's National anthem first, followed by South Africa's National Anthem.

Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of Bangladesh, says that he is fully fit. Informs that he comes back into the side in place of Towhid Hridoy. Mentions that their win against South Africa in the 2019 ODI World Cup gives them a lot of confidence. Reckons that today is another important game and they will have to be at their best. Shares that they would have batted first as well but do not mind bowling if they can restrict South Africa to a chaseable total.

South Africa's stand-in skipper Aiden Markram says that they will bat first. Adds the conditions have not changed much since the last game here and they will look to bat under the sun and set up a good total. Mentions that this World Cup has shown that there is no easy match and anyone can beat anyone on the day and they will take that and come in confident for every game ahead. Informs that Lungi Ngidi misses out due to a slight niggle and he is replaced by Lizaad Williams.

Bangladesh (Playing XI) - Tanzid Hasan, Litton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mehidy Hasan, Shakib Al Hasan (C) (In for Towhid Hridoy), Mushfiqur Rahim (WK), Mahmudullah, Nasum Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock (WK), Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram (C), Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lizaad Williams (In for Lungi Ngidi).

TOSS - The coin toss lands in the favour of Aiden Markram and South Africa have opted to BAT first.

PITCH REPORT -  Nasser Hussain is pitchside. He starts by saying that square boundaries on either side are 60 and 66 metres. Adds that the straight boundary will be 74 metres long. Dinesh Karthik joins him and says that bowlers who hit the deck will be most effective on this surface. Feels that bowling between 7 to 9-metre lengths will help the bowlers get the most out of the surface. Also says that this is a surface similar to the game between England and South Africa. Further adds that the conditions suit Bangladesh but the pitch will suit South Africa. Nasser ends by saying that the team winning the toss will opt to bat first.

On the other hand, Bangladesh initiated their campaign with a convincing six-wicket win. However, they couldn't maintain the momentum from their initial victory, suffering losses to England, New Zealand, and India. Despite their recent heavy defeat against India, Bangladesh still gleaned some positives. Players like Litton Das, who scored 66, and Tanzid Hasan, with a half-century, displayed their batting prowess. Additionally, Mehidy Hasan made a meaningful contribution with a two-wicket haul. In terms of their historical encounters, South Africa holds a dominant record against Bangladesh in ODIs, leading 18-6 in their head-to-head matchups. In World Cup matches, both teams have played each other four times, with Bangladesh winning twice and South Africa emerging victorious on two occasions. We are all set for match number 23 to start soon from Mumbai between South Africa and Bangladesh. Stay tuned for the toss updates coming up.

South Africa commenced their campaign with emphatic victories against Sri Lanka and Australia. Their batters broke several records during the Sri Lanka match, securing a resounding win by a margin of 102 runs. They continued their dominance by defeating Australia with an astonishing 134-run margin. However, their stellar start took a significant hit when they suffered an unexpected defeat at the hands of the Netherlands, the lone associate nation in the World Cup, losing by 38 runs. This historic win marked the Netherlands' first-ever victory against a Test-playing nation in a World Cup, somewhat dampening South Africa's previous triumphs. Nevertheless, the Proteas swiftly rebounded, demolishing the defending champions, England, by a massive 229 runs in their last outing. South Africa will bring plenty of positives into their upcoming match, particularly the stellar batting performances of Heinrich Klaasen, Reeza Hendricks, and Marco Jansen. Klaasen shone with a century, smashing 109 runs from just 67 balls. Reeza Hendricks contributed with 85 runs off 75 deliveries, while Marco Jansen delivered an unbeaten innings of 75 runs from 42 balls.

The 2023 World Cup match number 23 is set to kick off at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, featuring South Africa facing off against Bangladesh. These teams have had divergent campaigns, with South Africa currently sitting in third place, boasting three wins and one defeat, while Bangladesh finds themselves in the seventh position with one win and three losses.

... MATCH DAY ...

We are awaiting match 23 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 where South Africa will take on Bangladesh at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Both teams have played 4 matches and are placed third and sixth on the points table respectively. The Proteas have only lost 1 match against the Netherlands but have won the remaining 3 quite comfortably. They currently have the best NRR among all the teams owing to their aggressive batting approach. In their last match, they absolutely battered the English bowlers with half-centuries from Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen, and Marco Jansen. The star knock was of the centurion Heinrich Klaasen who scored 109 runs of just 67 balls. The stand-in skipper, Aiden Markram, also helped keep the partnership going but was dismissed before he could reach his half-century. They finished their innings just under the 400-run mark. Their bowlers also didn't show any mercy on their opposition. Gerald Coetzee scalped 3 wickets but Lungi Ngidi with his 2 wickets was the most economical. South Africa has already shown us the strength of their batting unit and their capability of putting up massive targets on the board for the opposition to chase. This team looks like a fierce one and should not be taken lightly at all. Bangladesh, on the other hand, is having a kind of hot and cold campaign in this tournament. They started off well with a win against the Afghans but have lost their remaining three games in a row. Their most recent loss was against India where they could not defend a good score put on the board. Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan are in good form and are giving sold starts to the team. The topic for concern will be the middle-order batters who looked out of touch in their last game. Mahmudullah at the end gave a strong finish pushing his team over the 250-run mark. Their bowling unit also couldn't handle the pressure when they were being attacked and allowed the opposition batters to get settled on the pitch. Mehidy Hasan shone out among the bowlers as he took a couple of wickets and was the most economical. They will try and break their losing streak in this match so that they have a better chance of qualifying for the semi-finals. This is expected to be a high-octane encounter. Will the Proteas come out victorious or will we see another upset at the hands of Bangladesh? Time will tell.
