Right then, that is all we have from this game. The first match of the ODI series had it all, heavy hitting, sensational pieces of bowling, rain and Australia did manage to chase down their highest score against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka as well. The next game of the series will be played on Thursday, the 16th of June at 2.30 pm IST (9 am GMT) but our build-up as usual will begin much sooner. Till then, take care and goodbye!

Aaron Finch, captain of Australia says it was a very good game of cricket, and Maxwell's innings was filled with class and maturity. Adds that they were always one more wicket down than they would have liked but Maxwell played brilliantly and it would have been better to have those wickets in hand at the death but it's fine. Says that they could be better with the ball in the death overs and will look to improve in the next game.

Sri Lanka skipper, Dasun Shanaka says that both sides played really well and their bowling went a bit wrong in the game and that cost them. Adds that the opposition had experienced batters and that mattered. Says that 300 on the board is also a good total but the bowling let them down. On Wanindu Hasaranga, he says that it doesn't seem bad but they will have to wait and see. On Dunith Wellalage, he says that he has watched him for a long time now and reckons he has a very bright future ahead.

Glenn Maxwell (80* off 51 balls) is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his match-winning innings. Maxwell says that he is very pleased with the win because the wickets were tumbling. He adds that he tried to stick around till the end but thought it was the right option to take on the debutant and that released the pressure a bit. One being asked about the reverse sweep, he says that it is a shot he is familiar with and he has worked on it, so it's not fluke but more skill.

The presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Dasun Shanaka opted to bat and on the back of a stellar opening stand of 115-runs and some breath-taking batting by Kusal Mendis and especially Wanindu Hasaranga at the death, Sri Lanka posted 300 runs on the board. They hadn't lost to Australia on home soil if they got to 270 runs or more and would have been pleased at the interval. Ashton Agar was impressive with the ball and Marnus Labuschagne did get a couple of wickets as well but the pacers were a bit disappointing. Rain played a bit of spoilsport when Australia were 72/2 in 12.4 overs, after which the target was revised to 282 runs off 44 overs and action on the field got even more interesting. After a few good knocks from Aaron Finch, Steven Smith and Marcus Stoinis, the visitors still needed a big innings from somewhre. Cue in the 'Big Show' and it was Glenn Maxwell's effort that got his side the victory.

The hosts had the runs on the board and with Maheesh Theekshana dismissing Warner in the very first over, they couldn't just press the issue inside the Powerplay. The bowling overall was erratic with no one really bowling well throughout the match. It was the wickets that Lankan bowlers took that gave them the chance and the pick of the bunch certainly was Wanindu Hasaranga who played through a hamstring issue and did put on quite a show. The other two spinners were expensive, debutant Dunith Wellalage did get a couple of crucial wickets but he will be looking to improve a bit more. A game the hosts will feel they should have but they are behind in the series and will look to pull up their socks in the next game.

Chasing a stiff target of 301, Australia didn't have the best of starts as David Warner fell in the very first over but then came the 67-run stand between skipper Aaron Finch and Steven Smith. Finch did get out but Smith carried on his merry way before rain played spoilsport. After a long break, Smith came back and scored a well-composed half-century. Marcus Stoinis too played a good cameo but the Aussies kept on losing wickets at crucial stages of the game. It was certainly the innings from Glenn Maxwell (80* off 51 balls) that almost single-handedly took them over the line and has now put them in front early in the series.

What a brilliant game of cricket we have witnessed! The hosts gave it their all but Glenn Maxwell just absorbed all the pressure and has taken his side to victory. A closely-fought match goes in the favour of the visitors and they lead the five-match ODI series 1-0.

The ball turns back in a long way and Agar is caught on the crease. Agar gets pinged in front and after a huge appeal, the umpire raises his finger. Australia have run out of reviews and there's nothing Agar can do. The replay shows that the ball would have gone on to crash into leg stump, good decision by the umpire.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The umpires and the fielders are in the middle. Aaron Finch and David Warner are set to open the innings for Australia. Dushmantha Chameera to start proceedings with the ball for Sri Lanka.

... The Run Chase ...

Right then, 300 on the board and a few quality spinners in their ranks means that at the halfway mark, the hosts have the upper hand. But Australia are a world-class side and if they get going from the start, the total wouldn't seem that big. It remains to be seen if the visitors are able to dominate the Lankan spinners. Stay tuned for the exciting run chase.

The start and the finish from Australia was disappointing but they did play some good cricket in between that. No wickets with the new ball and the opposition batters were all over the Aussies. The run-out affected by Marcus Stoinis was the turning point for the visitors as after that Ashton Agar was able to pick up wickets and squeeze the opposition as well. But the lack of someone like Adam Zampa in the middle overs did have an impact and it was then part-timer Marnus Labuschagne who got a couple of wickets. Jhye Richardson was given a hammering in the end and the fielding, in general, was below Australia's usual standard and they now have a stiff target to chase down.

The Lankan innings was set up nicely at the start as Danushka Gunathilaka and Pathum Nissanka added on 115 runs for the first wicket with twin half-centuries before an error in judgment broke that stand. Soon, both openers were dismissed and the hosts were a bit on the back foot. It was then a very steady partnership between Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka worth 77 runs that put Sri Lanka back in command. Wickets fell towards the end but Mendis kept on finding the fence and finished on 86 not out. But it was the blistering 19-ball 37 by Wanindu Hasaranga that have might just made a huge difference in the outcome of the game.

A scintillating cameo from Wanindu Hasaranga has propelled the hosts to a mammoth total of 300. Russel Arnold mentioned in his pitch report that it is a 250-260 run pitch but the hosts have surpassed that mark by quite a fair bit and will be fairly happy with the total on the board. Seeing this batting performance, they will be full of confidence going into the break, and also, generally, when Sri Lanka score 270 plus batting first against Australia, they end up on the winning side.

48.44

FOUR! Four in a row and Hasaranga's cameo is taking the game away from the visitors! Poor bowling especially with third man and short leg up, one can't bang it so short. It is outide off, Wanindu Hasaranga carves it over point for a boundary.

DRINKS! So, the equation is simple at the moment for Australia, 106 needed off 90 balls. With Glenn Maxwell still to come, the visitors find themselves in a very promising position at the moment. Stoinis has come out and after getting set, is starting to take on the bowlers. Sri Lanka need wickets and they need a couple of them really quickly. Wanindu Hasaranga, who is nursing a tight hamstring at the moment might have to be brought back sooner rather than later to try and get a breakthrough. Flatter delivery, close to the off pole. Labuschagne backs away to punch it past the diving man at cover for one. Slight hesitation between the two but no harm is done.

We are back for the resumption of play! The players are out in the middle and Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne are set to resume their innings. Wanindu Hasaranga will have the ball in hand and will complete his ongoing over.

UPDATE 8.58 pm IST (3.28 pm GMT) - We have great news! Play is set to resume at 9.10 pm IST (3.40 pm GMT). The game is reduced to 44 overs and the revised target for Australia will be 282.

UPDATE 8.44 pm IST (3.14 pm GMT) - No official word yet from the ground but the rain is gone and the covers are off, there are just a few wet patches on the outfield that are being taken care of and hence the slight delay. It shouldn't be long before we get an official update. Stay tuned.

UPDATE 8.14 pm IST (2.44 pm GMT) - Good news! The rain has stopped and the covers are coming off but we are still waiting for an official update. Stay tuned for further live updates.

Before the rain becomes strong, the umpires have signalled the groundstaff to get onto the field and the players are coming off. It isn't heavy at the moment but the umpires don't want to take any risks. Hopefully, the delay isn't a long one. The D/L par score for now stands at 87 and the visitors are slightly behind at the moment but remember, a minimum of 20 overs need to be completed for that to come into play. Stay tuned for further updates.

OUT! TAKEN! Big, big breakthrough for Australia and Charith Asalanka has given it away. Jhye Richardson shortens his length and bowls it over middle. Asalanka looks to take it on and lift it over mid on but it's a bit too short for that. Asalanka ends up skying it just over mid on where Aaron Finch takes a solid catch running back. Could this be the wicket that turns the tide?

We are minutes away from the start of play. But first, the two sets of players line up for their respective national anthems. It will be Australia's national anthem first followed by the national anthem of Sri Lanka.

Aaron Finch captain of Australia informs Alex Carey, Marcus Stoinis and Pat Cummins come in, adds there have been a couple of unfortunate changes due to injuries. Finch ends by saying they would have batted first but he backs his side to chase down anything later on.

Sri Lanka skipper, Dasun Shanaka says it is a used wicket and there might be some assistance for the spinners later on. Shanaka says they need to do more in the middle order and they have had a serious chat about their batting and he hopes they can do well. Informs they have a debutant in the form of Dunith Wellalage and Dhananjaya de Silva also comes in.

PITCH REPORT - Russel Arnold is pitchside. Arnold says it is the same pitch on which 176 was chased down. Adds it should be a good one to bat on. Mentions it seems dry and maybe on the slower side. Reckons there might be turn as we saw in the last game played here but it should not be a hard wicket to bat on. Ends by saying 250-260 should be par.

Australia (Playing XI) - David Warner, Aaron Finch (C), Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Alex Carey (WK), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Jhye Richardson and Josh Hazlewood.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Danushka Gunathilaka, Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (WK), Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka (C), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage (On ODI debut).

TOSS - Sri Lanka have won the toss and they will have a BAT first.

The hosts were pretty poor with the bat in the T20I series but that last game will give them hope that they can go up against a world class bowling unit. Still they will have to be patient and maximize their chances if they are to take a lead in this series. So, one of the few times in recent history that we see a five-match ODI series. Who will start off on the right foot? We'll find out. Toss and team news in a bit.
