That is it from this thriller match! There is one more match left in the group stage. On 2nd September, Pakistan will take on Hong Kong at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). Do join us a bit early for the build-up. Until then, it is goodbye and cheers!

Kusal Mendis is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his 60 of 37 deliveries. He claims that he played his normal game early on and then took the bowlers on. When asked about being dismissed on a no-ball, he mentions that it was good to bat again, he wanted to finish the game and it was his day so he survived. Shares that he has played for Sri Lanka over the last 6 years. He knows his role and is learning every day. Ends by thanking the Lankan support.

Dasun Shanaka the captain of Sri Lanka is up next. Mentions that in the middle period when he was batting with Kusal Mendis the conditions seemed to but tough but they thought the target was achievable. He says that the openers did a really go job that was what they were lacking in the last game. Adds that the upper-order batters did well so they were able to chase down this total. Admits that he has thought of coming up the order but it works well for the team if he comes lower down the order. Admits that people ask why he doesn’t bowl but claims he will do whatever is necessary for the team. Says that when Chamika Karunaratne got run out he thought the game was over but Asitha Fernando played well and it is good to see youngsters doing well as this bodes well for Sri Lanka.

Shakib Al Hasan the skipper of Bangladesh is up for a chat. He says that their death bowling overs cost them the game and it is something they are looking to improve. Says they conceded too many runs in the last two overs but the credit goes to Sri Lanka.  Claims that they wanted to take wickets upfront so that was the reason they had to bowl a spinner in the last over. Mentions that if they look at their last six months they have not been able to be competitive but have done well to put up a fight in the last two games. Admits that it will be a different kind of challenge in Australia for the World Cup and they have a lot of work to do before that. Adds that he feels sorry for the Bangladeshi crowd who have always been behind them but they have disappointed them several times. He hopes to make them smile in future.

Time for the presentation...

Chris Silverwood, the Head Coach of Sri Lanka is up for a chat and he says that the surface was good enough to bat on and a couple of big overs helped them. Adds it was crucial to keep wickets in hand. When asked about the coded signs, shares that there is no rocket science but some are coded suggestions by the coaches for the skipper.

Bangladesh would have been thrilled with their effort with the bat as they put up a healthy total of 183 runs on the board courtesy of cameos from several batters. All five bowlers for Sri Lanka picked up wickets but a few of them were a touch too expensive. They had to chase down a record target in this competition and they put on a fighting performance to get there. This should boost their spirits ahead of the Super 4 games whereas Bangladesh will be packing their bags after a disappointing bowling display.

Bangladesh were unable to take early wickets but took two crucial wickets in the last over of the Powerplay to peg Sri Lanka back slightly. Ebadot Hossain was the one to get the breakthrough and ended up with three wickets in the game. They continued to chip away at the wickets but were not able to maintain control as the part-time spinners were taken to the cleaners. They will be very disappointed with the number of extras they conceded as they were unable to maintain discipline. They were really good in the field though taking almost all the chances that came their way. Taskin Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers taking 2 wickets in his 4 overs and conceding just 24 runs. Shakib Al Hasan decided to bowl out his front-line bowlers and left an off-spinner for the end. That ploy backfired and they were unable to defend the total. They lost giving an extra run as they bowled a no-ball to end the innings. That summed up Bangladesh's performance in a crucial game.

Sri Lanka got off to a great start putting up a 45-run opening partnership but two quick wickets lowered their scoring rate. They kept losing wickets thereafter in an endeavor to pick up the scoring rate. Kusal Mendis got a lifeline as he was dismissed on a no ball and went on to notch up a half-century ending his innings on 60 runs of just 37 balls. Even after he was dismissed, Sri Lanka kept up with the scoring rate despite consistently losing wickets. They still had hope as long as their skipper Dasun Shanaka was at the crease. He made 45 runs in 33 balls to take them close but could not take his team over the finish line. It was cameos from Chamika Karunaratne and Asitha Fernando that sealed a convincing victory for the host nation of this tournament.

This has been a thriller and right till the end, there was no way of knowing which way the game will end. It will be Sri Lanka who progress to the next round of games and for Bangladesh, the tournament has come to an end. The Sri Lankan tail-enders held their nerves towards the end and sealed a wonderful victory chasing down the highest total in Asia Cup T20. They win by 2 wickets and with four balls to spare. This has been an absolutely entertaining affair.

Commentary

We are back for the chase. The players are out in the middle. Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka are the openers for Sri Lanka. Mustafizur Rahman to start with the ball.

...The Chase...

Sri Lanka failed to close the innings well. They leaked runs and the idea to bowl Wanindu Hasaranga at the backend didn't work as per plan. Despite taking two wickets, he went for many runs and so did Asitha Fernando. Everyone took a wicket each but there was no extra effort from Sri Lanka to break a couple of partnerships which took the game away from them. The pitch just got a bit softier at the end of the innings and that will give Sri Lanka some hope to chase this down. A good start is needed from the Lankans to get near the score. A place is on the line for the Super Four! Will the Lankans chase it down? We will find out right after the break.

Bangladesh made a brave move to send Mehidy Hasan on top and it worked wonders for them. He played with the intent from the start and helped the Tigers get off to a flier. But after that runs were hard to buy as they lost a couple of wickets in quick time. It was then the stand between Afif Hossain and Mahmudullah of 57 that helped them get past 150. The final flourish from Mosaddek Hossain was the icing on the cake for Bangladesh. They will clearly back themselves to defend this out.

Bangladesh will be really happy with this batting performance. They have gone past the par score and a decent bowling performance could possibly see them get into the next round. The last five overs went for 60 runs and Sri Lanka will be very disappointed with their effort.

The ball goes on to hit the pads under the knee roll and this looks pretty straightforward. The umpire raises his finger and Mahedi Hasan decides to review this. Replays show that the ball is far from the bat but the third umpire still insists on UltraEdge. No bat involved and Ball Tracking shows three reds. Mahedi Hasan has to depart.

We are all set for the game to begin. The Sri Lanka players have made their way out to the playing field. Sabbir Rahman and Mehidy Hasan will open the innings for Bangladesh. Dilshan Madushanka has been handed the new ball and will begin proceedings. Lets go...

The game is about to begin in a few minutes but before that, the players have lined up for their respective national anthems. It will be the Bangladesh national anthem followed by the national anthem of Sri Lanka.

Mosaddek Hossain is up for a chat before the game begins. He claims that when he was batting he came out with intent. Adds that in the first few overs it was difficult to face spinners in Sharjah but should be easier here. Mentions that it is difficult for batters against spin and they have good spinners. Admits that they have a lot of areas in which they need to improve, especially their batting and bowling in the death overs.

Pitch Report - Scott Styris is out in the middle to give us an update on the center patch. He says that the pitch was used last night and the ground staff have not done much on the wicket. The pitch will slow down a bit as the game progresses. Mentions that the pitch was a bit tacky and does not come on to the bat well. Claims that on one side it is very dry and the spinners could get some purchase whereas on the other end there is a little more grass and could help the fast bowlers. Claims that the two teams are playing with similar setups and could get a lot of the wicket but could help the Sri Laka spinners more.

Shakib Al Hasan the skipper of Bangladesh is up next. He admits that they wanted to field first but it is not in their control. Says that they have to bat well in the start, preserve their wickets and go for it later. Mentions that they did not bat well in the first six overs of the previous game and will hope to keep wickets in hand this time. Informs that they have done a few changes in the playing eleven and have worked on new plans. Claims that they haven't spoken about what's in the media and they just want to play a good game of cricket and win for Bangladesh.

Dasun Shanaka the captain of Sri Lanka is up for a chat. He says they will bowl first. Mentions that it is a used wicket and batting second will be easier and that should help them chase a target. Claims that they had a good preparation and they want to play aggressive cricket. Claims that Bangladesh is a good side and they will try to win it. Informs that there is one change.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (WK), Charith Asalanka, Danushka Gunathilaka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dasun Shanaka (C), Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Dilshan Madushanka, Asitha Fernando (In place of Matheesha Pathirana).

Bangladesh (Playing XI) - Sabbir Rahman (In place of Anamul Haque), Mehidy Hasan (In place of Mohammad Naim), Shakib Al Hasan (C), Mushfiqur Rahim (WK), Afif Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mosaddek Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Ebadot Hossain (In place of Mohammad Saifuddin).

TOSS - The captains are out in the middle. The coin is flipped into the air and lands in favor of Sri Lanka. They have elected to BOWL first.

Bangladesh faced a similar fate in their first game as they suffered a collapse up the order as well. Unlike the Sri Lankans, they handled the pace bowlers well but were exploited by some high-quality spin bowling. The lower order showed some fight to push them to a reasonable total but were well short of an ideal target. They put on a good bowling performance in the beginning in a quest to secure a win and restricted their opponents with some disciplined bowling but once again their death bowling came back to haunt them. They were unable to keep the shackles on and ended up losing quite comfortably. They will be hoping to reverse their fortunes in this game. Which of these teams can secure a spot in the Super 4 and continue their journey in the tournament?  We will find out soon. Stay tuned for the toss and other updates.
