Commentary
Welcome back to Doha. We are getting ready for the second innings of this match. The Afghanistan players gather near the fence, form a huddle with their new skipper, Hashmatullah Shahidi sharing a few last-minute words. The pitch is difficult for batting, let's see how Netherlands fare. Scott Edwards and Musa Ahmed are the openers. Yamin Ahmadzai to begin proceedings...
... CHASE TIME ...
Now then. 223 is the target for the Netherlands to go 1-0 up in the series. Powerplay 1 remains the key as once the ball will get old, the Afghan spinners will operate and make things difficult for them. But if the Dutch team can get a good start at the top, it will breathe a lot more comfortably. For Afghanistan, their spinners remain the key and they will love bowling on this surface. An interesting chase coming up, do join us shortly for the same.
Gulbadin Naib, who played a small hand of 16, is up for a chat. The former Afghan skipper says that they already had this score in mind, looking at the wicket in the morning. Shares that the outfield is too slow and the wicket has uneven bounce and it will be very difficult to chase for the Dutch team. Mentions that the ball is not coming on properly and it's tough to bat on it. Tells that it's a surface where you need to bowl in the line of the stumps to succeed.
Netherlands had a very impressive day with the ball. They used their variations really well and the poor deliveries were also few and far. As many as 7 bowlers were used by them and none of them was too expensive on this deck. They bowled tight lines and it never looked like the Afghan batters were in complete control of the game. Brandon Glover took 3 wickets and Fred Klaassen took 2 while the rest of the bowlers too had a decent outing. The Dutch team would be happy with its show with the ball but there were a few chances that Netherlands missed. Vivian Kingma getting a wicket off a no ball and Scott Edwards missing an easy stumping to dismiss Rahmat Shah can hurt them a bit. They also dropped a few catches off Hashmatullah Shahidi towards the end.
Afghanistan had an interesting day with the bat. Their batters were by no means on song at the start and they struggled to even get singles. Rahmanullah Gurbaz fell quite early but then there was an important stand between Usman Ghani and Rahmat Shah. They put on 59 runs but it took them 98 deliveries to do so. There was never really any intent to get a move on as they were content with looking for singles. Ghani, after getting bowled off a no ball early in the innings, could not make the most of it and got out while looking to up the ante. Hashmatullah Shahidi joined Rahmat Shah in the middle and it was this stand that put Afghanistan in a very good position. The pair added 66 but took 106 deliveries for the same. Still, they were 120 for 2 at the 30-over mark with a good platform to tee off. But just when Shah looked set for a big score, he was sent back too. There were a couple of quick wickets after that and Afghanistan were in big trouble. They could have ended up with a very low score but their skipper had different plans. Yes, they would have wanted to get to over 250, but still, this remains a competitive score on this deck.
That was an interesting inning. If you simply look at the numbers, you would feel that the Netherlands had a great game. To be fair, they had a pretty decent outing with the ball and should be commended but given how the pitch has behaved and Afghanistan's bowling strength, the Afghans would be the happier side going into the break. Happier only by a small margin though.

OUT! Another wicket for Glover! A top final over by him. Bowls this short and wide outside off, Shahidi top-edges his attempted pull shot to the left of mid on. Philippe Boissevain moves across in that direction and grabs the catch safely. Afghanistan finish on 222/8.
Sharafuddin Ashraf is the new man in. He will not face the ball though.
OUT! CAUGHT! Fractionally short and around middle, Rashid steps back to make room and force it over the infield on the off side. But the batter is still cramped for room and only chips a straightforward catch to Bas de Leede at covers.
Short and on off, Shahidi pulls it to deep mid-wicket for one. Terrific bowling, so far.
Too full and around off, Rashid hangs back to whip it across the line but only manages to inside edge it towards fine leg. Just a run.
Swing and a miss! Slower one, a touch short and outside off, Rashid gives himself room to carve it away on the off side but misses.
Back of a length on middle, Shahidi backs away and pulls it to deep mid-wicket for just a single.
Brandon Glover (8-0-40-1) to bowl the final over.

Short and wide outside off, slower in pace, Rashid tries to cut but it takes the under edge and goes to the keeper on one bounce.
Full and angling in around leg, Khan swishes and misses.
FOUR! Intent will always bring you runs! Full and around middle, Rashid steps back to make room for a shot over covers but it takes the outside edge and runs down to third man for a boundary.
Full and on middle, angling in, Shahidi slogs it across the line to deep mid-wicket for a single.
Rashid Khan is the new man in.
OUT! Stunning presence of mind by Musa Ahmed as he takes the catch! Fuller in length and around off, angling in, Naib targets the fence at long on and powers it towards there with the full swing of his bat. It flies near the rope where Musa Ahmed jumps to collect the catch over his head. He then loses his balance and is quick to release the ball. Goes outside the fence and then returns to safely grab the ball again. The two umpires get together and then refer the decision upstairs. The soft signal is out. The third umpire also feels the same after watching the replays. Fantastic effort.
Is that a clean catch? The TV umpire is called in and the soft signal is out. OUT it stays! Brilliant work by Musa Ahmed.
Full in length and around off, Naib swings it in front of square leg and returns for the second run.

Dropped again, by Brandon Glover! Full and flighted outside off, it's drilled through the line and goes aerially to the extra cover fielder who puts down the catch. They collect a couple, 15 from it.

Flatter and on middle, Naib is cramped for room and somehow keeps it out on the leg side. It's in the gap and they cross.
Shahid attempts another slog sweep but only drags it down to wide long on for a single.
SIX! Great shot, a much-needed one. Flatter and fuller around off, Shahidi goes down on one knee and powers it over mid-wicket for a flat biggie. 200 up!

Commentary
That's all from this contest. Afghanistan have gained vital 10 points and jumped to number 8 in the ICC Men's CWC Super League table. 20 points are still up for grabs for both teams in this series. The second ODI is on Sunday, 23rd January at 12.30 pm IST (7 am GMT). Do join us in advance for all the coverage. Cheers!
Hashmatullah Shahidi, the Afghan skipper, is also the Man of the Match for his sensible knock. Says that it was a satisfying day for them and they played well. Admits that they were 30 runs short but praises his bowlers for doing a commendable job. Shares that the ball was not coming onto the bat in the first innings and the pitch improved for batting in the second half. Appreciates the knock of Rahmat Shah and praises his spinners. Shahidi wants to keep improving and play even better in the next game. He is happy to have four wins in the CWC Super League and hopes to win the next two games as well and finish strongly. Regarding his knock, Shahidi replies that his son wanted him to play well in the first game as captain and he is happy to deliver. Admits that there was a bit of pressure but he learnt a lot from this experience of leading the team. Further says that the ball was staying low so he wanted to bat till the end of the innings as it wouldn't have been easy for the new batters to bat on this track.
Pieter Seelaar, the Dutch skipper, says that there were a couple of chances missed in the field and that hurt them a bit. Feels that they were in the game for quite a long time. Praises the skills of Rashid Khan and Yamin Ahmadzai and calls them too good for Netherlands. Tells that he has no regret of bowling first and adds that at the halfway mark, they were confident about getting the target but feels that they lost Scott Edwards at the wrong time and it was too much to ask from their lower order against quality Afghan bowlers. Lauds the effort of all his bowlers and calls it unfortunate to lose this match. Shares that the conditions were very cold and windy and he hopes to have better weather for the next game. Mentions that they competed well, they have got a bit of match rhythm and would look to do better in the next game. States that with a bit more effort they can get over the line. Finishes by saying that it will be a hard-fought series and there is plenty at stake.
Presentation time...
The Afghan spinners, as expected, choked the flow of runs and bowled with accurate lines. Pieter Seelaar consumed too many balls and scored too little. That mounted pressure and let the required rate slowly go out of reach. Scott Edwards was the nucleus around whom this chase revolved for the Netherlands and as soon as he was sent back by Mujeeb, the writing was on the wall. Seelaar did try to fight hard with debutant Boris Gorlee but they only delayed the inevitable. All in all, it would be fair to say that the Dutch team walked straight into the trap of Afghanistan by staying too patient with the bat and waiting for the opportunity to score runs. It never arrived.
In pursuit, the Netherlands made a confident start to the chase. Scott Edwards showed the right intent to score runs and the pitch also appeared to settle down in the afternoon. They gathered 45 runs in the first 10 overs for the loss of one wicket and had got the perfect platform to express themselves in the middle overs. But after the fall of the first wicket, Afghanistan managed to exert some pressure and grabbed a few quick wickets.
Clinically done in the end by Afghanistan! This was their kind of a game. They knew the conditions better than anyone and their batting innings although raised a few eyebrows, the Afghans knew what they were doing. Afghanistan kept forming stands and didn't care about the scoring rate. The plan though didn't work out to go big at the backend but still, whatever runs they put on the board appeared to be above par on this surface.

OUT! RUN OUT! There it is! The final wicket to end what has been a brilliant game for Afghanistan. Back of a length, around off. Fred Klaassen looks to heave it away but gets the inside edge on the pads. It rolls to the off side and they look for a single. Najibullah Zadran though runs in from point and scores a direct hit at the bowler's end. Fred Klaassen is short and that is the last wicket. Afghanistan win by 36 runs!
Brandon Glover is the last batsman.
OUT! RUN OUT! Easy decision for the TV umpire this time! Fullish and around off, Vivian Kingma forces it out on the off side. He crosses for a risky single as the bowler misses his shy at the non-striker's end. Vivian Kingma wants the second but is sent back. Meanwhile, Rashid Khan fires a direct hit at the bowler's end from long on as Vivian Kingma tries to drag his bat inside the safety crease. They appeal and the TV umpire is called. Kingma though is seen to be walking off. The replays find him short.

The batsman has just blocked that from his crease.

Loopy ball, outside off. Kingma tries to defend but misses as the ball spins away.
Kingma is safe! Tossed up, lands outside off and comes back in. Kingma looks to block but it sneaks through the gate. It goes very close to the off pole and since there are no bails, it's tough to give it bowled. Rashid though is appealing. The umpires have a word. The TV umpire is called in and after looking at it from various angles, there is no concrete evidence to suggest that it clipped the off stump.
What happened there? Rashid Khan seems sure that the ball has hit the stumps and the batter is bowled. Just a reminder, there are no bails due to the strong wind blowing across the field. The third umpire is referred to check whether the off stump got deflected. A tough call to make, nothing conclusive in the replays. The benefit of the doubt goes to Vivian Kingma.
Vivian Kingma is in next.
OUT! BOWLED! Through the gate! Googly, lands on off and comes back in. Philippe Boissevain looks to block but it sneaks through the gate and hits the stumps.

OUT! LBW! GONE! Colin Ackermann with the golden arm gets the big wicket of Rahmat Shah. He was the mainstay for Afghanistan so far and his wicket would provide the Dutch with an important opening. Drinks. Yet another slow partnership has blossomed, this time between Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi. The Afghans seem to have examined the surface and have a target already in mind. For that, they only need a strong platform for fireworks in the end overs. If that's the plan, they are going along nicely. Still, Rahmat Shah, who is nicely set, should look to take more chances and up the scoring rate a bit. A touch flatter and outside off, Rahmat draws forward and flat-bats it towards the cover fielder.
Floated and around off, Shah is forward as he pushes it to the off side.
Too full in length and around leg, it's dug out to the left side of the bowler. Philippe Boissevain dives but fails to stop, the short mid-wicket fielder also manages only a partial stop with his dive. The mid off fielder mops it up and the batsmen get a single.
Better length, loopy and full outside off, Shahidi drives but finds the cover fielder.
There is a slip in place for Hashmatullah Shahidi. Another wicket here would give Netherlands a big advantage.
Once again Philippe Boissevain drags his length short and delivers it on middle, Shahidi goes down and pulls but finds short fine leg.
Short in length and outside off, turning away, Shah cuts it to backward point and a fumble there prompts the batters to take a single.

THE DATES ARE OUT! Yes, the dates for the T20 World Cup to be held later this year are out. The first round will kick off on October 16 in Geelong and the MCG will host the finals on 13th November. The Super 12s is set to start on 22nd October with the defending champions and hosts, Australia, facing against the runners-up of the previous edition - New Zealand. There will be two groups with each group having 6 teams. The first one has Australia, New Zealand, England, Afghanistan as the participants while Group 2 will feature India, Pakistan, South Africa, Bangladesh. There will be two more teams in each group which will be selected in the prior round. As is quite common in major ICC tournaments, India will face arch-rivals Pakistan in the Super 12s. The grand MCG is set to host the clash on 23rd October. Thankfully, it is a Sunday so people won't have to apply for leaves from work!
With Asghar Afghan retiring and Mohammad Nabi making himself unavailable for the series, this is the first game for Hashmatullah Shahidi as the skipper of Afghanistan. They are lacking a few experienced players with a handful of players likely to make their debut. But, Afghanistan remain a quality side largely due to their bowling. It is going to be a big task for the Dutch batters when they come up against Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman and that could potentially decide who wins the game. Both the sides lack depth in batting and it is their bowling that will come to the fore. It could potentially be a low-scoring affair but let's hope that it is an entertaining one.
Hello and a warm welcome to the first of the three ODI matches scheduled between Afghanistan and Netherlands to be played in Doha. Both sides are at the bottom of the ICC CWC Super League and with 30 points at stake, both would be desperate to put their best foot forward. But there can only be one winner in this opening match. Who will that be? We shall find out.

Full, on off. Blocked back to the bowler.
Good commitment in the deep! Tossed up, on off. Pushed to the right of the bowler and the batters set off. Rashid gets across and then fires the ball at his end but misses. The ball goes to the left of long off but the fielder sprints across, dives and stops it. Three taken in the end.
Philippe Boissevain takes a step down the track and eases it past cover for one.
