Commentary

Right then, that will be it from us for this contest. We hope you enjoyed the coverage. We have two more games coming up in less than 12 hours at the T20 World Cup. The first game will see England taking on Scotland in Barbados on Tuesday, 4th June at 8.00 pm IST (2.30 pm GMT). The second contest of the day will have Nepal facing on Netherlands in Dallas. That game will start at 9.00 pm IST (3.30 pm GMT). But you can join early for all the build-up. Until then, take care and cheers!

Rashid Khan, the captain of Afghanistan says that this is the kind of start they wanted as a team and it is all about the mindset and applauds the openers and then praises the bowling as well. On captaincy, he says that it was a proud moment and reckons that it is about keeping things simple and giving his hundred percent. Adds that they have multiple options in different phases of play and if someone isn't having a good day, he can turn to others and even the batters and all-rounders, who make a lot of difference in T20 cricket. Mentions that the ODI World Cup last year has given them the belief to beat any team and it is all about what they are doing and ends by saying that against New Zealand it is a big game and want to keep things simple and give it their best as a team.

Brian Masaba, the skipper of Uganda says that it was pretty special to see their flag and the national anthem at the World Cup. Shares that they had a lot of nerves going into the first game and will be better prepared for their next challenge. Mentions that Afghanistan got a pretty good start but credits his team on how they came back. Launds Afghanistan on their bowling and adds that they are a quality side. Ends by sharing that the team is hoping to bounce back in their next game against PNG.

Fazalhaq Farooqi is the Player of the Match for his stellar five-wicket haul. He starts by thanking the Almighty and says that he has missed the hat trick a few times and will try to get it in the future. Adds that he tried to bowl a few balls into the wicket but then he tried to get used to the swing and later on tried to bowl the slower ones. Mentions that playing franchise cricket helps your overall game and you don't feel much pressure on the big stage.

Presentation Time....

Earlier in the game, Afghanistan were sent into bat first and they made 183 for 5 on the back of attacking 70s from Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz. The middle order could not keep the momentum once the openers were gone and they finished 20-30 runs short of the expected score. Cosmos Kyewuta and skipper Brian Masaba were the pick of the Ugandan bowlers as they snapped two wickets each and bowled economically. Uganda came back brilliantly with the ball but were not in the contest at all with the bat. They will hope to take the positives from this game and more forward in the competition.

A comprehensive win for Afghanistan as they trump Uganda by 125 runs and start their campaign with a big win. Chasing 184 for the win, Uganda were in all sorts of trouble from the start as they were reduced to 18 for 5 inside the first five overs. Riazat Ali Shan and Robinson Obuya hung around for a while but once they were dismissed, the lower order fell like a pack of cards and Uganda were bundled out for just 58. For Afghanistan, Fazalhaq Farooqi was the star of the show with 5 wickets for 9 runs in his spell. He broke the back of Ugandan batting and bowled splendidly. Rashid Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq chipped in with a couple while Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman took a solitary wicket. Afghanistan will be mightly pleased with this win and it gives a massive boost to their net run rate.

Commentary

We are back for the run chase! The umpires are back out in the middle and Rashid Khan can be seen leading the Afghanistan players in a huddle before they take their places on the field. It will be the duo of Ronak Patel and Simon Ssesazi to open the innings for Uganda. Fazalhaq Farooqi will begin proceedings with the ball for Afghanistan. Let's go...

... The Run Chase ...

Right 184 needed for Uganda to win their first ever World Cup match at the senior level but it won't be one bit easy. Afghanistan have quality spinners in their ranks and given how the last 5-6 overs of the first innings panned out, Uganda will need to go ballistic in the Powerplay. Join us in a bit for the exciting run chase.

Ibrahim Zadran, one of the stars of Afghanistan's innings is up for a chat. He says that he tries to keep it very simple. Adds that he is working hard on his skills and wants to enjoy his cricket. Mentions that him and Rahmanullah Gurbaz have been playing for a long time and have good communication. Shares that they haven’t faced the Uganda bowlers in the past but they discussed on checking out the bowlers before taking them on.

Uganda will now feel if they had bowled better lines and lengths early on, they could have easily restricted Afghanistan to about 160 odd runs but they will still take 183 given 210 seemed almost a guarantee at one point and they will have momentum heading into the interval as well. They were second best for about 14 or so overs but once skipper Brian Masaba got that elusive first wicket, they were able to latch onto the opportunity and picked up wickets in a heap. Masaba was the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets to his name for just 21 runs in his 4 overs and Cosmas Kyewuta also closed out the innings pretty well. They do have a big job to do with the bat but will certainly believe that they can do some damage.

What a fine comeback from Uganda in the final five or so overs but it was all about the Afghanistan openers as they put on a fine show and have helped their side to put on a pretty substantial total here. Afghanistan began their innings on a positive note and got away a flurry of boundaries in the Powerplay, racking in 66 runs as well. Rahmanullah Gurbaz looked at his hard-hitting best and Ibrahim Zadran also looked classy at the other end. The duo put on 154 runs for the first wicket before both of them fell in the space of two runs. Gurbaz made 76 and Zadran made 70 but once they got out, the innings simply crumbled and we could see that it wasn't easy to get going right away on this track. Mohammad Nabi was the only batter who managed to get into double figures beside the openers as Afghanistan stumbled their way to 183 for 5 in their 20 overs.

Drinks break! Time for a breather and well, Uganda certainly need it. This has been some batting from the Afghan openers and Rahmanullah Gurbaz in particular has been outstanding. Uganda didn't do justice with the new ball and are now playing the chasing game. With all 10 wickets intact, Afghanistan will be eyeing at least 200 which on this pitch is a score well above par. Can Uganda turn things around in the second half of the first innings? Let's find out.

We are done with the pre-match formalities and the teams now head out to the middle. The pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran stride out to open for Afghanistan. It will be Alpesh Ramjani to start with the ball for Uganda. Let's play...

We are just a few minutes away from the start of this game but first, the two sets of players stride out to the middle behind the match officials and lineup for their respective national anthems. We start with the anthem of Uganda followed by that of Afghanistan.

PITCH REPORT - Danny Morrison is pitchside. He starts by saying that it is very humid at 88 percent and there is a pleasant breeze as well. Adds that the smaller side is on the western end with 70 meters and the eastern side is 76 meters with straight boundary being 80 meters. Samuel Badree joins him and says it will be spin to win and Afghanistan have the best spin percentage of all full member nations whereas Uganda's spinners bowl most of their overs as well. It is the same pitch from the last game and it is fairly dry but there might be some swing early on for the pacers as well.

Rashid Khan, the captain of Afghanistan says that you need to be having the mindset of going out there and expressing yourself and let the skills decide the game and not the toss. Adds that it is great to see Uganda here at the big stage and a decade or so ago, they used to be in that place and now they just want to keep improving. Mentions that they have good spinners in the side and have had good preparations as they have been here for about two weeks now.

Brian Masaba, the skipper of Uganda says that they will Bowl first. Adds that they want to keep the opposition to a reasonable score that they can chase. Shares that playing in the World Cup is massive for them and will help to grow the game around the world. Ends by sharing that they are coming off some tough tours and are ready for the tournament.

Uganda (Playing XI) - Simon Ssesazi (WK), Roger Mukasa, Ronak Patel, Riazat Ali Shah, Dinesh Nakrani, Robinson Obuya, Alpesh Ramjani, Brian Masaba (C), Bilal Hassan, Cosmas Kyewuta, Henry Ssenyondo.

Afghanistan (Playing XI) - Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK), Ibrahim Zadran, Gulbadin Naib, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Najibullah Zadran, Karim Janat, Rashid Khan (C), Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

TOSS - The flip of the coin lands in favor of Uganda and they will BOWL first.

Uganda on the other hand are the new boys of the competition and it will be a monumental occasion for them playing at their first T20 World Cup and they will be eager and a bit nervous as well to make their mark. Uganda are a side filled with all-rounders but will need to be at their exemplary best to get a win against Afghanistan. Are we in for the first upset of the tournament? Or will the big guns brush aside the minnows? We shall find out soon. Toss and team news in a bit.

Afghanistan might just be the dark horses of the competition but are locked in a fairly difficult group and will be eyeing a positive start to get their campaign underway. The charismatic leg spinner, Rashid Khan will captain the side which is filled with T20 specialists, most of whom are coming into the World Cup having played at the cash-rich Indian T20 League.

Hello and a warm welcome to one and all! The 2024 Men's T20 World Cup has begun with a bang and we are here at the Guyana National Stadium in Guyana for a Group C clash as Afghanistan take on Uganda in Match number 5 of the competition. The once minnows, Afghanistan who have now become a really potent side will be itching to get going against Uganda who are making their first appearance at any World Cup at the senior level.

... MATCH DAY ...

The 2024 Men's T20 World Cup has started off with a bang and matches continue to come thick and fast and now, in Match 5, Afghanistan take on Uganda at the Guyana National Stadium in Guyana. This will be a Group B battle which also features hosts West Indies, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. West Indies have already beaten PNG to put their first points on the board and now these two sides will be looking to get off to a positive start and it will be highly crucial given this isn't an easy group, even for Afghanistan who are a very competitive T20 side. Speaking about Afghanistan, they will be looking to make their mark in the competition having performed extremely well in the ODI World Cup last year and will be hoping to pip tyhe likes of West Indies and New Zealand to make it through to the next stage but they will need to be at the top of their game against Uganda. Rashid Khan will lead the Afghan side that is filled with T20 specialists and as usual, it will be the spinners who will be key for them. The opening duo of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran will be expected to do most of the damage with the bat up top. They have a few all-rounders in the mix as well but someone like Azmatullah Omarzai will be expected to get those big hits at the backend of the innings and bowl a few overs at the top as well. Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq make for an experienced pace duo, one that can bowl in different stages of the innings and overall, Afghanistan will be looking to start their campaign with a bang. Uganda on the other hand are newcomers to the Men's T20 World Cup but having outqualified the likes of Zimbabwe and Kenya to reach the mega event shows how far they have come in terms of cricketing ability. Uganda also finished third in the African Games a few months back, losing to Namibia in the semifinal, a team that has now become a regular in the T20 World Cup. They also played a warm-up against Namibia where they lost but they do seem to have the right mindset about the game. The versatile bowler, Brian Masaba will lead the side that also features the likes of Ronak Patel and Roger Mukasa, two very capable batters and the dynamic all-rounder Riazat Ali Shah in the middle order. Cosmas Kyewuta and Bilal Hassan will lead the pace attack and Frank Nsubuga and Alpesh Ramjani will do the heavlifting with their slow left-arm spin in the middle overs. Uganda do have a lot of all-rounders which is always a good sign in T20 cricket but would have a liked a couple of more specialists in the squad. Afghanistan will prove to be a stern test for Uganda but if they can get going with the bat, they do have the bowling to take the opposition down. Will we see an early upset in the competition? Or will Afghanistan start off with a straightforward win? Only time will tell.
