Right then, Group 1 has taken shape with New Zealand becoming the first team to qualify for the semi-finals. They will be joined by either England or Australia with all eyes on the game between Sri Lanka and England as we move to Sydney for the action. A win for England sends them to the knockout stages but if they lose, Australia will find themselves alive in the competition. That game will start at 1.30 pm IST (8 am GMT) on Saturday 5th of November. As you all know, you can join us early for the build-up. Till then, it's goodbye and cheers!

Matthew Wade the skipper of Australia says that he had planned to finish the quota of other bowlers first and give Marcus Stoinis the final over. Shares that it was nerve-wracking and had seen Rashid Khan win such games 3-4 times in the Indian T20 league. Says that they will be staying in Adelaide for one extra night and will hope for an upset tomorrow night. Adds that the tournament hasn't gone their way and they were slow to get off the blocks. Ends by informing that they are hopeful for the return of Aaron Finch and Tim David in the next game if they progress further.

Mohammad Nabi the captain of Afghanistan says that it was a good game. Adds that they started off well and played really well. Credits Naveen-ul-Haq for bowling well and restricting the Australians to a chaseable total. Further says that it wasn't a huge total on this pitch but they threw their wickets away quickly in the middle order and they came under pressure. Ends by saying that they are improving and it was a fantastic game of cricket.

Glenn Maxwell is the Player of the Match for his knock of 54(32). He says that Afghanistan played really well and struck the ball cleanly. Adds that Afghanistan put them under pressure in the Powerplay and gave them a scare toward the end. Mentions that it is nice to have an impact with the run out. Shares that it skidded on during the second innings. Also shares that the wicket was slow during the day and it was during the 12th over that they decided to get a move on. Credits Afghanistan for the way they bowled in the last four overs. Ends by saying that he will be following tomorrow's game between Sri Lanka and England and hopes that Sri Lanka can do the job for them.

Time for the presentation...

Earlier, Australia kept up with their aggressive approach scoring runs briskly from the word go. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals, which probably resulted in them scoring 10-15 runs lesser than what they would have liked. Glenn Maxwell scored a fine half-century and was supported by Mitchell Marsh who fell five runs short of his fifty. The pace bowlers for Afghanistan were good with Naveen-ul-Haq picking three wickets and Fazalhaq Farooqi chipping in with two of his own. Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman contributed with one wicket each but their batting collapse in the middle overs made it all for nothing.

Australia struck early courtesy of Josh Hazlewood but they could not restrict their opponents from scoring freely. Kane Richardson dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz after a catch was dropped off his own bowling to get Australia firmly on top of the game. They were unable to get a breakthrough after that for a  period of time and with the Afghan batters starting to score freely, there was an anticipation of an upset on the cards. Glenn Maxwell ensured that it would not be the case with an outstanding direct hit from the deep to break the partnership and initiated a steady flow of wickets. They will be slightly disappointed that they were unable to wrap up the inning early, allowing their opponents to almost overcome the target but they have sealed a crucial win. Adam Zampa and Josh Hazlewood took two wickets each and Kane Richardson contributed claiming one.

Afghanistan were looking to get off to a positive start but lost Usman Ghani early.  Rahmanullah Gurbaz continued his onslaught from the other end scoring a quickfire 30 and keeping his team in the hunt. He was dismissed in the Powerplay though after which Ibrahim Zadran and Gulbadin Naib started building a partnership to steady the ship. They put on a 59-run partnership and were just getting a move on when a brilliant piece of fielding caused the dismissal of Gulbadin Naib. Ibrahim Zadran departed on the very next ball causing the batting order to crumble. They lost 4 wickets for 4 runs and suddenly found themselves really far behind in the game. They did go past the 106-run mark which meant that Australia could not go ahead of England’s net-run rate. Rashid Khan played a fighting cameo towards the end scoring 48 in just 23 balls to get his team agonizingly close to the target.

Rashid Khan and the Afghans have put on quite a fight here but have sadly fallen just short of the finish line! The Australians did have quite a scare but their quality eventually came through and they sealed a 4-run win to go second in the Group 1 standings. They are still behind England in terms of net run rate but the equation for them is simple. They need Sri Lanka to beat England and if that happens, they are through to the semi-finals of the 2022 ICC Men’s World Cup.

Commentary

We are back for the run chase. Australia players make their way out in the middle. Usman Ghani and Rahmanullah Gurbaz walk in with their blades for Afghanistan. Josh Hazlewood comes to bowl. Here we go.

... The Run Chase ...

Afghanistan will look to bat with intent and get off to a solid start while Australia will be hopeful of bundling out Afghanistan for a low total and improving their net run rate. They need to restrict Afghanistan to 106 in order to overtake England's net run rate. Can they do it? Let's find out. Chase coming up shortly...

Mitchell Marsh is in for a quick chat. He says that it is a competitive total and the Afghans bowled well. Adds that they may be a few runs short but most importantly they need to win the game. Admits that the wicket slowed down a bit but they have a fighting total even though they could have got going earlier. Mentions that they can defend this total and they needed something special tonight so hopefully it is with the ball.

Afghanistan did a great job of dismissing the dangerous David Warner early and reducing Australia to 54-3. They bowled exceptionally well in the death to keep Australia under 170. Naveen-ul-Haq was the pick of the bowlers for Afghanistan going at 5.25 RPO. Naveen-ul-Haq scalped three wickets, whilst Fazalhaq Farooqi picked a couple of wickets. A wicket each for Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan.

At the end of 20 overs, Australia finish with 168 on the board. The stand-in skipper Matthew Wade will be disappointed with this total considering their batting depth. Sent into bat first, David Warner made his intentions clear and got Australia off to a flyer. Australia then lost 3 wickets inside the Powerplay putting them in a spot of bother. The hosts recovered well thanks to knocks by Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell. However, they could not accelerate toward the end. Glenn Maxwell stood tall till the end and finished off the job for Australia with an unbeaten half-century.

FOUR! Glenn Maxwell does manage to get a boundary to end the inning! Fazalhaq Farooqi is unable to get the yorker right and serves this outside off, Glenn Maxwell thumps this to deep cover and beats the fielder to collect four more runs to his and Australia's kitty.

19.50

This is on a good length and angling away from the off stump, Glenn Maxwell looks to reverse sweep this but misses and gets hit on the pads as the ball rolls to the keeper.

19.40

This is bowled on a yorker length and outside off, Glenn Maxwell digs this out towards cover and refuses the single once again.

19.34

FOUR! That is fifty for  Glenn Maxwell and he gets there with a powerful shot! Fazalhaq Farooqi strays on the pads on a fuller length, Glenn Maxwell clips this to deep square leg and beats the fielder for four runs.

19.20

This is full as well and outside off, Glenn Maxwell knocks this hard to long off but refuses the single.

OUT! RUN OUT! That is some brilliant piece of fielding from Naveen-ul-Haq and he prevents the single on the last ball and dismisses Kane Richardson as well! Bowls this on a good length and in line with the stumps, Glenn Maxwell knocks this back to the bowler and Kane Richardson is looking for a single to get Glenn Maxwell on strike the following over. Naveen-ul-Haq collects the ball and throws it at the non-striker's end with Kane Richardson well short of the crease. Australia have lost eight wickets now but with Glenn Maxwell still out there he needs the strike. Adam Zampa walks in to bat now.

18.52

Another full delivery bowled outside off, Glenn Maxwell gets this to deep cover and they take two runs with some good running between the wickets.

18.40

Goes a fraction fuller but still outside the off pole, Glenn Maxwell swings his bat hard but does not connect.

18.31

This is on a good length and outside the off stump, Kane Richardson guides this down to third man and takes a single to bring Glenn Maxwell back on strike.

Kane Richardson is the new batter.

18.2W

OUT! CAUGHT! Another one bites the dust and Naveen-ul-Haq has claimed his third wicket! He serves a slower delivery on a shorter length and outside the off stump. Pat Cummins looks to get under this and loft this over deep cover-point. He does not get a good connection as Rashid Khan comes running in from the deep. He slides to take the catch and almost goes past the ball but manages to hold onto it near his face. Afghanistan have their seventh now and Australia have just lost their way toward the end.

18.11

Naveen-ul-Haq bowls this quick on a fuller length and outside the off stump. Glenn Maxwell looks to get his front foot out of the way and heaves it to the leg side but mistimes it towards deep square leg for a single.

OUT! TIMBER! Fazalhaq Farooqi has bowled an absolute screamer here! Nails a yorker in line with the stumps and Matthew Wade is late in bringing his bat down to dig the ball out. Watches his stumps shatter and the Australian captain has to make the long walk back to the pavilion. Australia have lost wickets at regular intervals and they will feel that they could have pushed for more had they preserved their wickets. Afghanistan have their sixth wicket and looked pumped.

17.41

Goes full once again and just outside the off pole, Glenn Maxwell looks to work this through the off side but gets an inside edge to deep square leg for one.

17.31

Goes full this time and into the pads, Matthew Wade flicks this to deep mid-wicket and takes a run.

17.21

On a good length once again and outside off, Glenn Maxwell looks to pull once again but mistimes this towards mid-wicket for a single.

17.16

SIX! Glenn Maxwell is looking absolutely dangerous here! Fazalhaq Farooqi bowls this on a good length and outside off, Glenn Maxwell gets under this and lofts the ball over deep square leg. He gets just about enough on this to clear Rashid Khan in the deep and collects six runs.
