About that Jaiswal's wicket, an interesting discussion between on-air commentators Sanjay Manjrekar and Mark Nicholas. Sanjay reckons that it was quite brave of the TV umpire, Sharfuddoula Saikat to overturn the Snicko that didn't show any spike of the ball on the glove on the way to the keeper. He further says that the front angle that was provided to the TV umpire clearly showed the deflection to which Mark Nicholas agrees. He says that there was a clear deflection as shown in the real-time replay from the front angle and the TV umpire went with that as the conclusive evidence. This is the second instance in this very series where the Snicko has come under scrutiny. Remember that KL Rahul's dismissal in the Perth Test? That became part of the heated debate as well regarding the reliability and conviction of the technology. But here, it was about whether there was a deflection off the glove or the bat to which the TV umpire overturned what the technology showed.

Australia knew they needed to keep pressing early after the Lunch break but failed to break this stand early and now, they need 7 more wickets with just one session of play remaining. Mitchell Starc was seemingly stiff in this session and that was bound to happen at some point as Cummins toiled hard and beat the bat again and again, only to come out empty-handed. Nathan Lyon bowled a long spell too but just couldn't get that elusive breakthrough for his side.

India were 33/3 when Rishabh Pant came out and joined Yashasvi Jaiswal at the crease post Lunch and they are now 112 and still 3 down, negotiating a whole session and doing so fairly comfortably as well. There were plenty of plays and misses at one point but hardly any edges or even getting hit on the pads for an LBW shout which also shows that this pitch has held up quite well, even on Day 5.

TEA, DAY 5! SESSION SUMMARY - 27.5 overs, 79 runs and no wickets! Given what we have seen in this session, it must have surprised many people, but this match has been full of surprises and it was only fitting that the tables would turn again after Australia bossed the opening session on Day 5.

... DAY 5, SESSION 2 ...

An immersive first session comes to an end with this. Australia are all over the Indians now and are looking as threatening and need 7 wickets to register the win in this Boxing Day Test. They have managed to get the better of the Indian top order with only Jaiswal stranded at one end. Coming into the second session, they will be aiming to get quick wickets and run through the middle order with a minimum of 65 overs left in the day. And as the old ball hasn't done much on this deck, India aims at stability from both ends to prevent embarrassment. They do have a fair bit of batting left as well. Join us at 7.38 am IST (2.08 am GMT) for the post-Lunch session.

Nathan Lyon is down for a quick chat. He says that the wicket of Virat Kohli was massive and reckons that the bowling was some of the best in that session. Mentions that Cummins is right alongside Bumrah as the best in the business but the others bowled well too and mentions that it is Test cricket that is so engrossing. On his batting, he says that it is decent and hopes to play his role going ahead in this game.

Known as a compulsive strokemaker, Jaiswal showed remarkable restraint and adapted admirably to the match situation. He was joined by Virat at the crease as the Australians successfully managed to contain the scoring rate. However, Starc, who had been reintroduced into the attack after a brief spell on the sidelines, exploited Virat's known weakness with a perfectly pitched delivery, claiming his wicket just before the Lunch break and effectively reducing India to 33/3.

The Aussies went for the edges initially but didn't get much result. A change of tactics did produce some positive results for them as they aimed more at the stumps. Although the scoring remained at a snail's pace, the hosts didn't get a breakthrough for more than an hour. It was only until the patience lapsed and Cummins, who rose fantastically to the occasion, got the better of Rohit and KL Rahul in the same over.

Into the chase, India had a mountainous task to bridge 340. And with the way the Indian top order struggled in the series, eyes were on Rohit Sharma to get runs. He did get off to a watchful start. But he and Jaiswal were constantly interrogated with precise lines and lengths, especially from Starc. The ball moved and deviated both ways a fair bit, but it still looked like a good wicket to bat on as well. Rohit was solid in defense initially as Jaiswal watchfully tried to settle on the crease as well.

LUNCH, DAY 5! A session and a half, to say the least. But, Australia will be over the moon as they have got three wickets at quick intervals, including that one of Virat just at the stroke of the Lunch. And yet again, the Indian top order has failed to deliver with the three big guns falling with no impact whatsoever. The fifth and final day began with the overnight batters Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland continuing their batting stint with Australia's lead reading 333 runs. However, it didn't take long for Bumrah to wrap things up in the very second over of the day. Lyon, with 41 and Boland's 15, fairly troubled and tired the Indian bowlers, and the tourists had to toil for 20 overs to get that last wicket.

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Virat Kohli will be livid with himself but Mitchell Starc gets his due and India lose another big wicket. Starc dishes out a full and wide one, bowling it almost in the blockhole outside off and this one slides right across the right-hander. Virat Kohli goes chasing after it and looks to drive but gets an outside edge that goes quickly and down to the left of first slip where Usman Khawaja hangs on to yet another sharp and low catch. Kohli departs cheaply and India are 33/3 at the stroke of LUNCH ON DAY 5!

Pushed through fuller and drifted onto middle and leg, Jaiswal defends it with a straight bat.

Flighted delivery, a bit full and dipping on the batter as well, Jaiswal stays watchful and keeps it out.

A touch shorter and on off, sitting up off the deck, Jaiswal presses back and blocks it off.

Over the wicket to the right-hander, flighted a bit full and wide, Virat Kohli lean across to reach the ball and clips it across through mid-wicket for one.

Tossed up, much fuller on off, Jaiswal stays leg side of the ball and hammers the drive wide of long off for a single.

Starts from around the wicket, tosses the ball up on off and Jaiswal just eases it back to the bowler.

Time for spin. Nathan Lyon has been summoned into the attack now. He replaces Mitchell Marsh.

Another maiden! Slightly short and around off, Virat Kohli watchfully leaves it alone.

Nicely pitched up at the stumps, Kohli is able to make the block off the front foot.

There was a noise, was there a pad on it? Just back of a length and on a tight line around off, Kohli looks to play inside the line expecting it to angle away but comes back in and goes past the bat.

Pitching it up in the channel around off, looking to swing it back in but the ball has gotten a bit soft, Kohli leaves it alone once again.

Pitched up on off and middle this time, looking for some inswing, Kohli gets onto the front foot and jams it firmly towards mid off.

On the money from Starc, a bit full and attacking middle and leg stump, Kohli with a high-elbow punch off the front foot, blocking it off.

Fuller in length, slips it down the leg side, Virat Kohli is drawn forward but misses the flick and Carey does well to get a pad on it. The ball rolls behind square on the leg side and they get a bye.

Serves it full now and on the pads, Jaiswal flicks it across to mid-wicket and the initial call is of a 'no' from Jaiswal but they get across for one with ease.

Around the wicket to the left-hander, angled in on a hard length and gets it to straighten, Jaiswal presses back to block with an open stance.

OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Skipper, Pat Cummins is on a roll and he has turned the game on its head in the space of one over here. Cummins serves this one on a hard length, angling it in around the top of off but gets the ball to skid through and straighten off the deck. KL Rahul is tentative and is late on the block, playing at it with hard hands too. The ball takes the outer edge of the bat and goes down to the right of the first slip where Usman Khawaja now takes a good low catch. Rahul departs for a duck and India are now reeling at 25/2!

OUT! CAUGHT! A sharp catch from Mitchell Marsh at third slip and Pat Cummins gets the big breakthrough for Australia, sending his opposite number back to the hut. On a nagging length, angled into off and then leaving the right-hander off the deck. Rohit Sharma gets carried away a bit and just looks to heave across the line, ends up skewing it off the outside edge and the ball travels quickly around head height to third slip. Marsh does well to show quick reactions and gets both hands on it but the ball just pops out and yet, Marsh manages to hang on at the second attempt. India 25/1 now, with 315 more runs to win.

Drinks! It has been a fascinating first session of play so far and an equally entertaining one as well. All eyes on were Rohit Sharma who has had his fair share of struggles with the bat in this series. He though began with caution and Jaiswal alongside him have successfully seen the first crucial hour or so against the new ball. However, the two have been thoroughly tested with the ball moving either way. But it still looks like a good surface to bat on, and has a fair share of help for the bowlers too. The Indian opening pair will look upon seeing through the session going unscathed. While a wicket or two here will delight the Aussies. Scott Boland to continue from the other end after the hydration break.

Switches to over the wicket now and drags the length right back. Jaiswal stands well outside the crease and nudges it down wide of covers looking for one but is quickly sent back by his skipper.

PITCH REPORT - Sunil Gavaskar is at the pitchside. He says it looks very good and there are no visible cracks. Also says this has no devils in it and has been rolled out nicely. He then reckons that looking at the final wicket partnership of Australia, India might not have problems if they apply themselves well and bat sensibly.

We are just a few moments away from the fifth and final day to commence in this 4th Test at the MCG. The crowd is piling up gradually and the numbers could go well in excess of 50,000. It is currently bright and sunny out there in Melbourne. Australia will bat on as this is the word of mouth coming out from the camp.

Right then, 333 is the magical number that Australia currently lead by and they might have to force the issue early on the final day to avoid a draw. India though, no matter what, will have to put on a top batting performance to avoid defeat. We still have a long way to go, so, stick around as the action from Day 5 isn't far away.

On the other hand, India fought back hard with the ball and gave themselves a huge chance as Mohammed Siraj and especially Jasprit Bumrah did wonders to have the opposition 91/6 but they just didn't close things out and now, will have a very tricky job to do with the bat on Day 5 of the game to keep the BGT trophy in their grasp.

Australia batted for almost the whole chunk of Day 4 after having picked up the final Indian wicket and it was an innings filled with ups and down but eventually, this last wicket stand between Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland has proved to be telling. The lead is well over 300 and it will be interesting to see whether Australia declare right away or not.

Hello and a warm welcome to wherever you are you in the world. It is Day 5 of the Boxing Day Test between Australia and India and with all these results still possible, this match is heading towards the legendary status for so many reasons.

... DAY 5, SESSION ONE ...

The riveting day's play, marked by extraordinary displays of grit, valor, survival, and resistance from both teams, has perfectly set the stage for a thrilling final day finish in this Boxing Day Test. With India facing an uphill task, and Australia sniffing a victory, tomorrow promises to be a test of nerves, skill, and character. The historic ground has witnessed many memorable fifth-day finishes, as both teams prepare for one final push. Well then, 96 overs remain to be completed in the last three sessions to spare. India would be itching to get this last wicket super early in the day, while whatever runs come from the willows of Boland and Lyon, would potentially dash out India's chances. We are up for an EARLY START tomorrow as well as the first ball will be bowled at 4.30 am IST (11 pm GMT, the previous day) on Monday, 30th December. Till then, adios!

The pitch did show some signs of deterioration and the ball beat the edges innumerable times throughout the day, but it is still a decent one to bat on, given how the last-wicket stand for Australia stood up. Also, hard luck for Akash Deep who bowled his heart out but remained wicketless. India's fielding performance, however, fell below their usual standards, with Yashasvi Jaiswal's two dropped catches proving costly - opportunities that could have brought Australia's innings to an earlier close.

With 9 men down, Australia got more invaluable runs from the bat of Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland who resisted through the end of the day. Their determined stand not only frustrated and tired the Indian bowlers but also helped Australia surpass the psychologically important milestone of a 300-run lead, providing their team with additional insurance heading into the fifth and final day. Nathan Lyon did the most with the bat, but Scott Boland too showed good character for his 10 runs off 65 balls. Australia could have been effectively all out had Bumrah not overstepped in the final over when Lyon nicked into the slips, but that just sums up the day.

The pair's partnership lasted nearly 20 overs and yielded 57 valuable runs, providing Australia crucial breathing room. However, Mohammed Siraj broke through with a spectacular delivery to dismiss Labuschagne. By this point, Cummins had grown in confidence and continued to push Australia's advantage before his own dismissal, making his presence felt with important runs in the lower order. India shuffled its bowlers and even summoned spin in tandem, but the lower order did well enough.

Australia, despite being under considerable pressure entering into the third session, found stability through Marnus Labuschagne's resilient batting display. He found an ideal partner in Pat Cummins, who adopted a positive approach by rotating the strike and keeping the scoreboard moving rather than getting defensive under pressure. Cummins has become habitual of those pivotal contributions with the bat as he has done it numerous times, but the weightage this Test holds from an Australian perspective, that partnership for the seventh wicket could well prove to be the point of difference in this contest.

STUMPS, DAY 4 - SESSION SUMMARY - 33 Overs, 93 Runs, 3 Wickets - No reason to not love this format of cricket. From 91/6 to 228/9, Australia survives the day in a spectacular fashion. This Test match has been a pure box-office. To call it a remarkable display of cricket would be an understatement for what unfolded at the MCG on this Super Sunday! It was a test of pulse, grit, and character in the truest sense. As befitting this storied rivalry, the contest lived up to expectations, with neither side willing to concede ground. The spectators witnessed precisely what one would anticipate from these cricketing powerhouses, as momentum oscillated between the teams like a pendulum.

FOUR! Edged but safe and it runs away to the fence as well to close out Day 4. Immaculate length from Bumrah and on a tight line around off, Nathan Lyon fends off the back foot but gets an outside edge that goes wide of the slip cordon and rolls away into the deep third fence. Bumrah is down on his haunches as Australia rake in a lead of 333 runs and that will be STUMPS ON DAY 4!

A tad full and angled in from middle, Lyon flicks it away to mid-wicket.

Hard length on middle, angling in, Nathan Lyon with a neat tuck off the back foot and in front of square leg for a couple of runs, bringing up the 50-run stand between these two as well. Wow!

No ball! Oh, deary me! What an anti-climax! KL Rahul somehow manages to stick to the catch and Jasprit Bumrah seems to have a well-deserved five-fer but then comes that dreaded signal from the umpire and Bumrah has overstepped yet again. Nagging length around off, nibbling off the deck, Lyon gets squared up and gets an outside edge down to third slip where Rahul manages to hang on to the bowl almost between his two legs but it won't count.

Excellent running! Fractionally short and around off, Nathan Lyon presses back and dabs it down wide of point and picks up a couple of runs in the deep.

Back of a length and around off, straightening off the deck, Lyon presses back and across to block it off. Bumrah has also overstepped and it will be a No Ball.

FOUR! A rare loosener from Bumrah and Nathan Lyon takes full toll of it. Dishes out a wide full toss, begging to be hit and Lyon slashes it away behind point for another boundary.

Well then, possibly the final over of the fourth day now. And the ball has been handed to Jasprit Bumrah (23-7-42-4). Spell number nine for the premier Indian pacer.

Back of a length and angled into the hips, tucked away neatly down to long leg for a single.

Shorter in length and over middle and leg, angling just down leg, Nathan Lyon looks to play at it but is beaten.

FOUR! That's the other side of the new ball, it really flies off the bat and that is a top shot again from Nathan Lyon. Fuller in length and on off, Lyon leans across and drills the on-drive a bit uppishly but well to the left of mid on for a boundary.

Back of a length and around off, dabbed away off the back foot and wide of the point region for a single.

An appeal from behind for caught behind but the umpire turns down the appeal. Bowled a bit shorter and at the body, some extra bounce with the new ball and Boland almost gets strangled down the leg side but the ball flicks the jersey rather than the glove or the bat.

And there it is! The second new ball has been taken by India.

Pitches the ball right up around middle, looking for that reverse swing, Lyon though gets nicely forward and punches it towards mid on for a quick single.

The second new ball is available now. Will India opt for it? They didn't. Yashasvi Jaiswal holds the new Kookaburra cherry in his hand and tosses it up to the on-field umpire Joel Wilson. Akash Deep to continue with the old one.

On the shorter side and around middle, played off the back foot and tucked away neatly past short leg.

Ooh, a bit too close for comfort but a solid leave nonetheless. Akash Deep bowls it on a length and around off, gets the ball to reverse back in length, Boland strides across and shoulders arms as the ball goes just over the top of off stump.

A huge, huge appeal for LBW but the umpire says no! The Indian players have a discussion and eventually, Rohit Sharma does take the review. A good first ball from Akash Deep, pitched up around off, swinging back in late and a long way as well. Scott Boland falls over while looking to flick but misses and gets hit flush on the front pad. There's nothing on UltraEdge but Ball Tracking shows that the ball would have done too much and missed leg stump. Another excellent on-field decision and India are out of reviews.

Akash Deep (15-3-46-0) returns into the attack, replacing Washington Sundar. He has bowled his heart out but has largely remained out of luck. Here's him for the first time after Tea. Also, the second new ball is due for India in 2 overs.

Gives it a bit more air and floats it up on middle, Nathan Lyon lunges and blocks it down the pitch.

A bumper now, over leg and bowled at a good height but Boland has enough time to duck under it. It seems the ball has just gone a bit too soft and is coming slower off the deck as well.

Switches to around the wicket and slips in a shortish delivery, angling it just across from around off and middle. Boland hops back trying to fend it away but the ball goes close to the outside edge.

FOUR! Oh, what a shot and what a way to bring up the 300-run lead as well. Banged in short and around off, a bit of width offer, Boland stays back and cuts it up and over backward point for a boundary. How big of a psychological advantage will this landmark be?

Time for the final hydration break on Day 4! Well, Australia is chipping away with every single run now. The last-wicket stand between Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland has added 18 vital runs to the Australian total, with Lyon doing the most. They are on the brink of extending the lead above the 300-run mark. The two have displayed good resistance, just following the footsteps of Marnus Labuschagne and Pat Cummins who executed that earlier. The Indian bowling attack aims to get rid of this frustrating stand as quickly as possible and come out to bat for some overs in this final session.

Fuller one on off, looking for the yorker on off, Lyon leans on and drives it towards mid on.

Sharp fielding from Nitish Kumar Reddy and a direct hot would have been curtains for Nathan Lyon. Hard length in and around off, Boland taps it to the left of point and sets off for the single. Reddy springs across and does a 180 turn to collect and throw the ball quickly at the keeper's end, missing the mark by a few inches.

Awkward bounce but Scott Boland manages to keep it down! A skiddy short ball from Siraj, right at the batter and this one jumps up as well, Boland hops back and gets his hands out in front, edging it away well in front of the fielder at gully.

Siraj goes a bit wider on the crease and slips in a full and wide one, Boland leaves it alone.

Siraj comes back in from over the wicket and bowls it around the top of off, Lyon gets inside the line and tucks it wide of mid-wicket for an easy single.

Boland is making this look pretty simple now. Bumrah spears in a yorker on middle, darting it in, Boland plays from inside the crease and firmly pushes it out to mid off.

Is that out? Another review taken by India for LBW. Bumrah believes that it looked straight enough. UltraEdge shows clear gap between the bat and the ball. Ball Tracking saves Lyon as the ball slides way down leg. NOT OUT! Lyon survives.

Buzzers! Cheeky running from Australia and Rohit Sharma's face tells it all. Jadeja fires in a full ball, darting it into middle and leg, Boland almost falls over and gets an inside edge behind square leg setting off for the single. Mohammed Siraj there picks up the ball and scores a direct hit at the bowler's end. The ball deflects away and the batters pick up an invaluable extra run.

NOT OUT! A review taken more in hope than anything else. Good-length delivery, slanting back in from around middle, Nathan Lyon falls over while looking to flick and gets beaten on the inside edge. The ball goes off the pads through square leg for a couple of leg byes and Rohit Sharma opts for the DRS. No bat involved and Ball Tracking confirms that the ball would have been sliding down leg.

Oh, aggressive stroke from Nathan Lyon! Full and outside off, angling back in, Lyon leans across and looks to hoick it over mid-wicket but is well beaten.

PUT DOWN! Mohammed Siraj should have pouched that one but Nathan Lyon lives on. Floats the ball up onto the stumps, Lyon leans on to drive but ends up getting a leading edge back to the bowler. The ball balloons up around Siraj's face and simply gets big on him and Siraj is unable to pluck it out.

OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! A sharp low catch by Rohit Sharma at first slip but Pat Cummins will feel he could have left that one alone. Ravindra Jadeja comes back into the attack and floats it up, slower than usual, not all that full and around off, Cummins presses halfway forward and just has a poke at it and ends up hurdling it into the mitts of the opposition skipper. End of a fighting knock from the Aussie skipper, Cummins departs on 41 (90) and Australia now 9 down with a lead of 278 runs.

Straight up in the air but falls well safe! Another short ball, angled in at the batter, Cummins backs away and take sit on, getting a top edge over the mid-wicket region and he settles for a single.

Dishes out a bumper now, well directed right around the front shoulder, Cummins does well to duck under it.

Nagging length and around off, angling back in, Cummins edges it down with soft hands towards Virat Kohli at wide second slip.

Vital runs these! Pitched up outside the line of off, Cummins stays leg side of the ball and squeezes it away down to deep third for a couple of runs.

FOUR! What a cracking shot! Almost a half-tracker from Bumrah, a rare loosener, outside off, Pat Cummins leans back to stay leg side of the ball and gets it past backward point for a boundary.

EDGED AND THROUGH THE SLIPS! Bonus runs for the hosts these! Siraj bashes the length hard, on off, Nathan Lyon opens the bat face to tap it into the off side. Gets a thick outside edge which flies flat and between the two slips for a boundary.

DRINKS! Well, well! This Test keeps on throwing curve balls at the audience and Australia's lead now currently stands at 266 runs with any score beyond the 250-run mark proving to be quite difficult in recent times at the MCG. However, the Indians are fired up and who knows how the pitch will play after basking in the sun. For now, the struggle from both sides goes on and they keep on trading blows after blows.

Good piece of fielding there by Akash Deep in the deep! Bashes the hard length does Siraj, outside off, Pat Cummins slices it through backward point. The ball rolls towards the fence. Akash Deep from deep cover sprints to his left and puts in the dive and does well enough to save one for his side.

OUT! RUN OUT! A huge mix-up between the batters and it costs Australia another wicket here! Bumrah comes from around the wicket and bowls it on the back of a length, around middle and leg. Mitchell Starc tucks it behind square and runs for a single as the ball goes to deep square leg. He senses an opportunity and rushes back for the second run but Cummins isn't interested. He is more ball-watching instead of seeing his partner. He later sees Starc charging and sends his partner back, but Starc is already more than halfway through. Starc has to obey as he retreats by turning around and runs at full tilt to get to the other end. Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar Reddy in the deep throws it towards Rishabh Pant. He runs forward and grabs the ball bending low, and sees Starc struggling to get to the non-striker's end. He shows a good presence of mind and fires a flat throw and scores a direct hit at the bowler's end. Replays show that Starc is just marginally out of the crease. Australia are 8 down now.
