Commentary

One down, two to go - That brings us to the end of a rather one-sided contest, with Australia drawing first blood in the T20I series and now eyeing an unassailable lead in the next game. Bangladesh, meanwhile, will be desperate to bounce back and level the series. We will be back here in Chattogram for the second T20I on Friday, 19th June, which gets underway at 8 am GMT. As always, do join us early for all the build-up. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

The victorious skipper of Australia - Mitchell Marsh says that it's always nice to start the series with a win. On the spinners, he says that they were a bit surprised by the lack of pace and bounce on the wicket and feels that they picked a very well-rounded team. On Cooper Connolly, Marsh says that he's now got a good taste of international cricket and he'll continue to grow.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Adam Zampa wins the award for his excellent bowling spell of 3/18. On picking up 150 T20I wickets, Zampa says it feels good and is a proud achievement, especially after being around in the format for so long. He adds that, despite a tough ODI series, the young players like Nikhil Chaudhary and Joel Davies have settled into the side seamlessly. On the nature of the pitch and his plans, he says the information passed on to him suggested the pitch was a bit dull, with the ball not coming onto the bat easily. He adds that he simply tries to use those conditions to his advantage.

The captain of Bangladesh - Towhid Hridoy says that as a batting unit, they failed today, but will work on it and come back stronger. He further adds that they lost too many wickets in the middle overs. Hridoy reckons that the wicket was a good one to bat on and they should have got to about 160-170, but as a bowling unit, they have been doing well.

Presentation Time...

The fight was there, runs were not - Bangladesh were quite disciplined with the ball and, in fact, every bowler used apart from Saif Hassan managed to pick up a wicket, with debutant Abdul Saqlain getting a couple. The problem, though, was the total on the board, which simply left them with too much to do. The encouraging sign was the fight they showed, refusing to let Australia coast to victory and throwing everything into the contest in the field. Those are positives they can carry into the next game, but if they are to bounce back in the series, their batters will need to shoulder far more responsibility.

Spin chokes Bangladesh - Earlier in the game, Bangladesh were bundled out for a meagre total, with only Saif Hassan providing some early impetus and Mahedi Hasan adding a fighting 29 off 22 balls late in the innings. Apart from those two, no batter even crossed the 20-run mark, underlining just how disappointing the batting effort was. Australia executed the 'spin to win' formula to perfection, with nine of the ten wickets falling to the spinners. Adam Zampa and debutant Joel Davies shared six wickets between them, while Matthew Renshaw picked up a couple and Spencer Johnson and Nikhil Chaudhary chipped in with one apiece.

Aussies get the job done - Chasing a modest target, Australia suffered an early wobble as both openers departed inside the Powerplay. But Cooper Connolly carried his outstanding form from the ODI series into the shortest format, blasting a fluent 47 off just 27 balls. His brisk 40-run stand with Tim David all but knocked the wind out of Bangladesh's challenge. With Australia firmly in control, debutant Nikhil Chaudhary and Matthew Renshaw then guided the visitors closer to the target, but neither could stay till the end. That left Xavier Bartlett to walk out and apply the finishing touches, sealing the win with 10 balls to spare.

Australia strike first - Australia are up and running in the series, taking an early 1-0 lead and firmly seizing the momentum. After the disappointment of a 2-1 ODI series defeat, this victory should inject plenty of confidence into the visitors ahead of the remaining games. Bangladesh deserve credit for dragging the contest as deep as they possibly could, but with so few runs on the board, they were always up against it in this chase and remained second favourites from the outset.

18.24

FOUR! He's done it, has Xavier Bartlett, and Australia win by 4 wickets. Short of a length and around off, sits up nicely for the batter. Bartlett presses back on his toes and punches it with a vertical bat. The ball goes through extra cover and rolls away into the fence, beating the chasing fielder.

Xavier Bartlett walks out to bat.

18.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! Matt Renshaw fails to finish things off for his side and his sluggish knock finally comes to an end. Abdul Saqlain serves it just back of a length and slants the ball into the pads. Renshaw gets cramped for room and just wrists it across into the leg side. He fails to keep it down and Saif Hassan at short mid-wicket springs to his left, taking a sharp low catch. Australia still need 3 for the win.

Out goes Nikhil Chaudhary, in comes Joel Davies.

16.2W

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! The keeper seemed too excited with the caught behind appeal, and he's missed the stumping opportunity here. The umpire turns down the initial appeal but Parvez Hossain Emon seems certain and a review is taken. Nagging length, just sliding it down leg. Nikhil Chaudhary sits down and looks to play a fine paddle but misses and the keeper gobbles it up nicely to his left. The third umpire is called in and checks UltraEdge first, which confirms that the ball did brush the gloves. The umpire then also checks the legality of the catch and it is all fine.

16.11

A slider, angled well across off and stays low as well. Renshaw pushes it out through cover and picks up a single.

Parvez Hossain Emon is struggling with some cramps. The physio is stretching his hamstrings out in the middle. Goog to go again.

15.50

15.41

Commentary

We are back for the chase. The umpires are back out in the middle and so are the players of Bangladesh. It will be the duo of Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis to begin the innings for Australia. Shoriful Islam will get things underway with the ball. Let's play...

... The Run Chase ...

Straightforward chase? Well, 132 might not look like a defendable score, especially given the modern-day T20 norms, but we have seen in the past that Bangladesh can defend low totals at home. So, the Aussie batters will need to play some smart cricket and it will be crucial for the set batters to kick on, as the pitch won't be easy for a new batter. It should be a fascinating watch, so stay tuned as the run chase is up next.

No balance between aggression and smart hitting - The Bangladeshi batters seemed to be in one particular mindset, and that was to attack the Aussie bowlers right from the off. It did work for the first few overs, but once that first wicket fell, it was like a procession. 7 out of the 10 wickets that fell were outfield catches, and almost all of them were in the deep. Saif Hassan did get a start up top but couldn't convert, and Mahedi Hasan hit a flurry of boundaries towards the end as only those two batters each reached the 20-run mark for Bangladesh and the hosts ended up with a below-par total on the board.

Spinners rule the roost - Australia assessed the conditions early and employed spin from both ends, and even someone like Matt Renshaw was used extensively. He picked up a couple of big wickets after which Adam Zampa came in and wreaked havoc, picking up three wickets and notching up 150 T20I wickets in the process as well. The debutants also made a mark for Australia as Joel Davies picked up a three-fer and Nikhil Chaudhary got a wicket and couple of catches, to round off a fine team performance with the ball from the visitors.

Action-packed first innings - Well, it lasted only 19 overs, but Bangladesh's batting inning was filled with action from start to end. The Aussie spinners have done a fine, fine job, but those 20-25 runs added by Mahedi Hasan and the tailenders will give Bangladesh some sort of hope.

OUT! LBW! A fine review from Australia and Joel Davies wraps things up with a three-fer. Bangladesh have been bowled out for 131. An arm ball, full and on middle, angles away. Mustafizur Rahman tries to block it with a straight bat but plays down the wrong line. The ball goes past the outside edge behind, where Josh Inglis grabs it and appeals for it, but it is turned down. After a chat with his keeper and bowler, Mitchell Marsh takes the review, UltraEdge confirms no bat involved, but the replay shows that the ball hits the back pad before going to the keeper. The third umpire sees the Ball Tracking, which shows three reds, with the ball crashing into the off pole. Not the dismissal, the Aussies appealed for, but they will take it.

18.51

Gives this one some more air, full and around off, Mahedi Hasan goes for the reverse but it goes off his gloves towards short third for one.

18.51wd

WIDE! Flatter, short but way outside off, Mahedi Hasan leaves it alone. Wided.

18.40

Slows it up, full and well outside off, Mahedi Hasan makes room and reaches out for it but toe-ends it back to the bowler.

18.34

FOUR! Hat-trick of boundaries! Tossed up, full and around off, Mahedi Hasan gets down and across. He rolls his wrists to play the sweep behind square on the leg side and the ball races to the fence for four mroe runs.

18.24

FOUR! Two in two! Flighted, full and on middle, Mahedi Hasan uses his feet to go inside out and lofts it beautifully over extra covers for another boundary. Mahedi is playing a good hand here.

18.14

Dragged length, turning into the stumps, Hossain hops back and tucks it into the leg side.

10.30

Full and outside off, bowled from over the stumps. Shamim Hossain punches it to cover.

Bangladesh lose half their side now. Shamim Hossain walks out to bat.

OUT! CAUGHT! Joel Davies strikes just two balls into his T20I career, and the skipper, Mitchell Marsh, is absolutely delighted. Davies offers some flight and floats the ball around leg stump. Parvez Hossain Emon goes down on one knee and brings out the big slog sweep but gets more height than distance. The ball sails down to deep mid-wicket, where Cooper Connolly takes another classic Aussie reverse-cup catch.

10.10

Joel starts off with a full ball around the pads. Parvez Hossain Emon clips it across to mid-wicket.

DRINKS! Midway through the first innings, and this is starting to develop into a bit of a cat-and-mouse contest. Bangladesh have tried to attack from the off, but have lost crucial wickets in the process, whereas the Aussies have bowled decently well. Adam Zampa has been the key so far and if Australia pick up a couple of quick wickets after the break, they could be in the driver's seat. It will be interesting to see if the hosts continue to play their shots or look to build a stand and take things deep. Let's find out. Also, Joel Davies, the debutant, to bowl after the break.

This is another googly, full and outside off, turns away, Soumya Sarkar backs away a long way, gets down on one knee and tries to loft it over extra cover, but he ends up slicing across the ball.  The ball flies much squarer and towards deep point, where Nikhil Chaudhary runs forward and dives to grab it with both hands just above the ground. OUT! CAUGHT! The man with the golden arm has done it, and it is another loose shot from a Bangladeshi opener. Nicely flighted by Matt Renshaw, on a length and angled across off. OUT! CAUGHT! Loose, too loose from Tanzid Hasan and the look on his face tells it all. Spencer Johnson stays around the wicket and slides a full ball across the left-hander, and this one just holds in the deck a bit. That's a beauty from Johnson up top! On a good length, lands it just outside off, and gets the ball to shape back in late. Saif Hassan gets squared up as the ball holds its line and beats the outside edge.

All in readiness! It has got a bit dark out there, with overcast conditions which can help the seamers, but hopefully the rain stays away. The two umpires walk out to the middle now. We can see the Australian players in a huddle before they spread out and take their respective field positions. Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan are the two openers for Bangladesh. Spencer Johnson has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

The players are now out in the middle and lining up for the national anthems. It will be Australia's anthem first, followed by Bangladesh's, as both teams soak in the atmosphere. Once the anthems are done, we will be all set for the action to get underway.

PITCH REPORT - Brad Hogg is pitchside. He says this ground holds special memories for Australia, with the highest score by an Australian here belonging to Jason Gillespie, who famously made a double century in a Test and never played for his country again. As for the pitch, he notes there is a little more grass on it this time, which should offer some seam movement and carry. There are also a few soft spots and cracks that could produce occasional variable bounce. He feels the ball will still come onto the bat nicely, rewarding straight play, while shots square of the wicket could be risky due to the uneven bounce. The straight boundaries measure 78 metres and 76 metres respectively, with the square boundaries around the 70-metre mark. He expects spinners to use the longer side cleverly and reckons a first-innings score of around 175 should make for an even contest.

Australia (Playing XI) - Mitchell Marsh (C), Josh Inglis (WK), Cooper Connolly, Matt Renshaw, Tim David, Nikhil Chaudhary (On debut), Joel Davies (On debut), Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, and Spencer Johnson.

Bangladesh (Playing XI) - Soumya Sarkar, Tanzid Hasan, Saif Hassan, Parvez Hossain Emon, Towhid Hridoy (C), Shamim Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Abdul Saqlain (On debut), and Shoriful Islam.

The skipper of Australia - Mitchell Marsh starts by joking about the conditions and says that it is like Brisbane on Day 1 of a Test match. Adds that the wicket looks nice and they will have to see how it goes. Informs that they have a couple of debutants, one of them being Nikhil Chaudhary, and they have a good mix of all-rounders in the team.

The captain of Bangladesh - Towhid Hridoy says that the wicket looks good and hopefully they can put up a good score on the board. Adds that he is feeling good leading his country for the first time but his nerves are fine. Mentions that the last few series they have been playing good cricket and just want to continue that here as well. Informs that they are playing three seamers and two spinners.

TOSS - The two captains are out in the middle. It is Towhid Hridoy as the stand-in captain for Bangladesh, and Mitchell Marsh for Australia. The flip of the coin lands in Hridoy's favour, and Bangladesh will BAT first.

Debut alert - We are just a few minutes away from the toss, but according to a few sources, it seems like Abdul Saqlain has been handed his maiden T20I cap for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh look for another upset - Following a historic 2-1 ODI series victory, Bangladesh looks to carry their winning momentum into the shortest format. The hosts are brimming with confidence and welcome back key pacers Taskin Ahmed and Nahid Rana to their T20I setup as they look to repeat what they did in 2021, when they beat the Aussies 4-1 in a home T20I series. On the other side, Australia looks to bounce back and salvage pride after a challenging ODI leg. The visitors are bolstered by the return of Mitchell Marsh, who steps up to lead a strong lineup featuring T20 specialists like Travis Head, Tim David, and Adam Zampa. While the Aussies enter as favorites, the spin-friendly and true-bounce tracks in Chattogram might level the playing field once again. Stay tuned for the toss and team news.

From Dhaka to Chattogram - Hello, and a warm welcome to one and all. We are in Chattogram for the 1st T20I between Bangladesh and Australia. Things are about to get heated under the overcast skies of Chattogram as the Aussies look to avenge that unprecedented 2-1 loss in the ODI series early on, whereas the hosts look to make more history. Should be an exciting clash.

... MATCH DAY ...

Spring in the steps - For years, the clash between Bangladesh and Australia usually followed a predictably yawning routine. Bangladesh would show flashes of brilliance, Australia would dominate by finding another gear, and experience would inevitably win out. But what just went down in Dhaka wasn't a fluke or a lucky escape. Bangladesh didn't just win, but they owned their opponents at home. By locking in a historic 2-1 series victory, the Tigers did something no Bangladeshi team before them had ever achieved in ODI history. They stared down a powerhouse of world cricket, aka the mighty Aussies, took the punches, and landed the definitive counterpunch. Onto the shortest format - Now, buoyed by their historic success in the ODIs, the hosts are brimming with confidence to do the same in the shortest white-ball format. Australia, on the other hand, are determined to bounce back, dust themselves off, and take the honours this time around. From Dhaka, the caravan moves to the port city of Chattogram for an exciting 3-match T20I series. Like the ODIs, the history of T20Is between these two teams is neither detailed nor vast. In fact, there has been only one previous bilateral T20I series between these two nations, back in 2021, when the Aussies toured and were handed a humbling 4-1 defeat on turning tracks. Barring that standalone series, these two nations have only met on the big stage during T20 World Cups, where the Kangaroos have traditionally held the upper hand. Even with the 2021 shocker factored in, the overall head-to-head numbers still read 7-4 in favour of the Australians. The concussion blow and Litton’s reigns - Bangladesh enter the T20I leg with a forced captaincy change due to a major injury setback. Regular skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been rested to recover from a concussion. During the second ODI in Dhaka, Miraz took a painful blow to the side of his helmet from a sharp Riley Meredith bouncer. Despite getting badly shaken, he courageously batted on to hit the winning runs. However, subsequent hospital observations and medical advice ruled him out of the T20I series to manage his health. In his absence, wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das takes over the captaincy. He will be assisted by the explosive middle-order batter Towhid Hridoy, who has been elevated to vice-captain. The speed revolution - Bangladesh are moving away from their traditional spin-reliant home formula and are unleashing a highly potent, multi-dimensional pace battery. The headline news is the return of 23-year-old speed merchant Nahid Rana. Rana, who consistently exceeds the 150 km/h mark, rattled the Australian batting line-up during the first ODI with a hostile spell of 4-41. Having rested from T20Is for nearly a year due to workload management, Rana is fully fit and primed to bring raw pace. He is joined by the experienced Taskin Ahmed and left-arm specialist Mustafizur Rahman, who have more than 250 ODI wickets between them, and have both been recalled in place of the injured Tanzim Hasan Sakib and the dropped Ripon Mondol. Additionally, the selectors have handed a maiden T20I call-up to right-arm medium-fast bowler Abdul Saqlain. Saqlain’s cricketing journey is a genuine fairy tale. Having never represented Bangladesh at any youth levels, he burst into the limelight during the 2025 Asia Cup Rising Stars tournament, helping Bangladesh A finish as runners-up. Bison returns amid missing superstars - The touring Australians are desperate to shake off their ODI disappointment, and their T20I campaign receives a massive boost with the return of their regular skipper, Mitchell Marsh. He has fully recovered from an ankle injury and has joined the squad. His presence will be of utmost importance for the Aussies as he didn’t only have a stellar IPL season this year, but since the last 2 years, The Bison has been Australia’s leading run scorer by miles. However, Marsh will have to marshal a severely depleted squad. The selectors have rested several of their biggest superstars, meaning that Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Glenn Maxwell, and Steve Smith are all absent from this tour. Australia's planning has been further disrupted by critical late withdrawals. Explosive opening batter Travis Head was granted personal leave for both the ODI and T20I legs of this tour, leaving a massive power-hitting void at the top of the order. Additionally, premier all-rounder Cameron Green, who featured in all three ODIs, was withdrawn from the T20I squad. The fresh faces - Despite these heavy losses, Australia’s squad features some of the most exciting young prospects in domestic cricket. To replace Travis Head, the selectors have brought in Delhi-born spin-all-rounder Nikhil Chaudhary. Chaudhary impressed with his aggressive batting and handy off-spin for the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. The visitors are also likely to hand a debut to Sydney Sixers all-rounder Joel Davies, who earned his maiden call-up as he was the MVP of the last season. Australia will rely heavily on the blistering form of Cooper Connolly, who slammed a match-winning 149 off 134 balls in the third ODI, alongside established short-format finishers like Tim David whereas Aaron Hardie makes his T20I comeback after almost a year, following a decent domestic season and improved BBL credentials. Team form (Last 5 completed T20Is, recent first) - BAN - LWWWL | AUS - WLLWL. What to expect? For Australia, the key to winning will be how quickly their makeshift batting unit can negotiate a fairly settled Bangladeshi bowling unit. If Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis can establish a strong platform during the Powerplay, finishers like Tim David and Cooper Connolly can exploit the shorter boundaries of the venue. Bangladesh, on the other hand, will look to exploit Australia’s relatively inexperienced bowling lineup. Defensively, Bangladesh’s death-bowling options appear much more robust, with Shoriful Islam coming off a career-best 6-48 in the final ODI and Mustafizur Rahman boasting a brilliant T20 economy rate. While Australia possess the raw power to run away with the game, Bangladesh’s settled team chemistry, dominant home run, and superior adaptation to subcontinental conditions make them slightly dominant.
