Commentary

Right then, that wraps up the series opener where momentum swung back and forth, but in the end, Australia emerged victorious. It was a tough day for England across the board in international cricket, as the men lost in Southampton and the women suffered a defeat in the final ODI against Ireland in Belfast. Phil Salt and his men will now aim to level the T20I series and force a decider. The second T20I is scheduled for Friday, September 13, at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, with the first ball set to be bowled at 5.30 pm GMT. As always, you can join us early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!

The skipper of Australia, Mitchell Marsh says both Head and Short started exceptionally and they were aiming to get past 200 but they lost wickets which wasn't great but he is happy with the win. Appreciates Josh Hazlewood and says young guys learn a lot from him. Adds that it was a good wicket and they made good use of the conditions in the Powerplay.

The captain of England, Phil Salt says that Australia got a good start but his bowlers dragged it back towards the end. Adds that they could have done better and will look to bowl with better clarity in the next game. Feels that they had a realistic chance of chasing it down. Further says that they needed to take partnerships deeper and not doing that has resulted in them ending up on the losing side.

Travis Head is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his outstanding knock of 59 off 23 balls. He says it was a nice outing, especially after a tight couple of overs. Adds that he looked to hit good shots and make use of the pace in the second half of his innings. Appreciates the way Matthew Short played at the top of the order and says how tricky it gets with so many opening batters available and how one needs to step in when given a chance. Concludes that he is in good form and gets backed well by the captain and coach.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, after being asked to bat first, Australia made a dynamic start thanks to Matthew Short and Travis Head. Head, in particular, launched a fierce assault on the English bowlers, who were often wayward, and made the most of the Powerplay with a dazzling fifty. However, the introduction of the spinners in the middle phase allowed England to claw their way back into the game. From a position where they could have posted a total well beyond 200, Australia lost their last 7 wickets for just 47 runs and were eventually bowled out for 179. Liam Livingstone began the turnaround for England and finished with 3 wickets to his name. Jofra Archer and Saqib Mahmood cleaned up the tail quickly, finishing with two wickets each.

For England, momentum was on their side following a spirited fightback with the ball. Despite losing Will Jacks early, the hosts enjoyed a steady start. However, unlike Australia’s brisk Powerplay, England’s was more measured. This early stability soon crumbled as their top order was dismantled during the Powerplay. Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran reignited their hopes, but with one batter short due to the team composition, a lot rested on their shoulders. The loss of both set batters in the space of a few balls put England in a precarious position. These twin blows left Jamie Overton with a monumental task, and his dismissal was the final nail in the coffin.

A topsy-turvy game, but Australia ultimately secured a convincing victory to go 1-0 up in the series! With an excellent bowling performance backed by brilliant fielding, the visitors have taken the lead in this three-match series. Much like their approach in Scotland, they leveraged their height and bowled straight to keep the batters in check. Although they lost Xavier Bartlett midway through his final over due to what appeared to be a side issue, the rest of the Aussie attack provided no respite. As Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran started to build a flourishing stand, Josh Hazlewood answered his skipper's call by dismissing Livingstone and dashing England's hopes.

OUT! CLEANED'EM UP! Sean Abbott completes the cleanup job and seals the match for Australia by 28 runs. Sees the batter shuffle across and follows him with a fuller-length delivery just outside off, Saqib Mahmood moves way across the stumps but still goes through his shot and tries to scoop it fine. Ends up deflecting it back onto the stumps. England are bundled out for 151 runs and Australia take a 1-0 lead in the series.

19.16

SIX! Saqib Mahmood finally manages to get one right! Sean Abbott keeps it short and over off, Saqib Mahmood stands tall in the crease and pulls it over long on for a biggie.

Commentary

We are back with England's reply with the bat! The umpires make their way out to the middle and the Australians are seen in a huddle with skipper Mitchell Marsh exchanging final words of encouragement before spreading out across the field. Phil Salt and Will Jacks are the openers for England. Xavier Bartlett has the new ball and will start the proceedings. Away we go!

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, England have the momentum and will aim to carry it into their batting effort as they start their chase. While the pacers struggled with pace on, the spinners and pacers using variations were more effective. The pace bowlers conceded 102 runs in 9.3 overs at an economy rate of 10.7, while the spinners managed to take 4 wickets for 73 runs in their 10 overs, maintaining a more economical rate of 7.3. Australia will be on the hunt for early wickets and will have to adapt quickly to the conditions. Back in a bit for the chase.

However, England clawed their way back into the game in stunning fashion. At 118/2 after 10 overs, Australia looked set for a total well beyond 200. But the introduction of Liam Livingstone turned the tide for England. It wasn’t just England’s fightback - it was also Australia’s undoing, as some questionable shot selections allowed the hosts back into the contest. From a strong position of 132/3, Australia lost their way, lost their next 7 wickets for just 47 runs and failed to bat out the full 20 overs.

Earlier, Phil Salt chose to bowl first, hoping to exploit any moisture left on the pitch from the rain. However, the English pacers struggled to find the right lines and lengths, and Australia made them pay for it. Matthew Short started it all, and Travis Head then simply dismantled the English pace attack with a 19-ball fifty. With 86 runs on the board by the end of the Powerplay, Australia had laid a strong foundation to capitalise on.

Wow! What an incredible fightback from England! After Australia dominated the Powerplay, not many would have seen this coming. The turnaround began with Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone's efforts in the middle overs, and it was capped off by some exceptional death bowling from Jofra Archer and Saqib Mahmood.

19.31W

OUT! RUN OUT! Australia are bowled out for 179! Jofra Archer misses the yorker and delivers a low full toss on off. Adam Zampa drives it toward deep cover, pushing for a desperate second run. But Jordan Cox sprints in, collects cleanly and fires a perfect throw to keeper Phil Salt on the bounce. Salt calmly gathers and swiftly removes the bails, leaving Zampa's dive in vain as he falls well short of the crease confirmed by the third umpire!

19.24

FOUR! Jofra Archer changes the line and pays the price! Bowls it on a shorter length and over the stumps, Adam Zampa lofts it over mid off and finds the fence for a boundary.

19.11

With the crowd right behind him, Jofra Archer darts in another yorker angling it into the left-hander. Hazlewood manages to dig it out through covers for a single. No hat-trick for Archer!

OUT! CLEANED'EM UP! Stumps shattered everywhere! Saqib Mahmood charges in over the wicket and delivers a brilliant yorker on off. Cameron Green tries to dig it out but misses, as the ball sneaks under his bat and crashes into the off stump. England take three wickets in as many balls. Australia have now lost their last 6 wickets for just 40 runs. They are now 172/9 after 18.1 overs.

England lose another, teetering on the brink of being bowled out. Archer will be on a hat-trick at the start of his next over. From 132/3, Australia have slipped to 172/8.

Xavier Bartlett comes out to bat.

OUT! BOWLED'EM! Jofra Archer strikes and England are pulling the momentum right back towards them! Hits the deck hard and keeps the length short over leg, Sean Abbott makes room and looks for the lofted drive on off but misses.

An excellent over from Sam Curran! Just 6 runs off it and a big wicket! This is on a length and on middle and leg, pace off as well, Cameron Green is deceived by the lack of pace as he tries to work it across the line and misses onto his pads. The ball deflects and rolls to the off side and the batters steal a leg bye.

Hits the deck hard and angles it in, on middle and leg, Sean Abbott awkwardly swivels back and pulls it to deep square leg for a single.

Sean Abbott walks in at number 8.

Bowls it on a length and on middle and leg, with some pace off, Josh Inglis premeditates the delivery and switches his stance in an attempt to reverse paddle this over short third. Makes a meal of the line and misses out on making any connection. The ball goes on to rock the leg stump and Australia lose another. Inglis goes for 37 (27). Australia are now 165/6 after 16.4 overs.

16.31

Continues to keep it full and hones in around the stumps, Cameron Green swipes it to long on for a single.

The toss is now scheduled for 5.15 pm GMT, with the first ball expected at 5.45 pm GMT. Fingers crossed the conditions stay clear, and we can get a full game without further interruptions. Stay tuned!

In case you missed it, on Tuesday, England announced a 17-man squad for the three-match Test series in Pakistan set for October. The big talking points were the return of opener Zak Crawley and captain Ben Stokes, both of whom were sidelined for the recently concluded series against Sri Lanka due to injuries. The squad also welcomes the return of Jack Leach and Rehan Ahmed, with spin expected to play a crucial role in the subcontinental conditions. Additionally, Jordan Cox, who is set to make his T20I debut, has been included, along with uncapped pacer Brydon Carse, bringing fresh talent to the squad.

Australia, led by Mitchell Marsh, have struck a perfect balance with explosive power hitters at the top and versatile all-rounders in the middle, enabling them to play a fearless, aggressive brand of cricket. Despite having a relatively inexperienced pace attack, the return of seasoned campaigner Josh Hazlewood adds depth and balance to the side, making them a more formidable force on paper compared to England. With Travis Head, Josh Inglis and Cameron Green piling on the runs against Scotland, Australia will likely look to dominate early with the bat, requiring only steady support from their bowling unit to maintain control. As both teams gear up for an important opening victory, this match promises to be a thrilling spectacle. Stay tuned, as the toss is just moments away!

After a challenging couple of years, England are on the brink of building a fresh, dynamic core team. However, they will be without star player and captain Jos Buttler, who has been sidelined due to a calf injury. In his absence, Phil Salt will captain this revamped squad, featuring three debutants eager to make their mark in the opening clash. Jordan Cox, Jacob Bethell and Jamie Overton have all been named in the playing XI and will be eager to embark on their T20I careers for England in an exciting new chapter. Despite the team's relative lack of collective experience, they possess the firepower and talent to challenge the Australians, who come into this series riding high on a dominant series victory against Scotland.

Hello, and welcome to this eagerly awaited clash between two of cricket’s fiercest rivals! England are set to host Australia in the opening match of this thrilling three-match T20I series, with the first showdown taking place at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton. Expect high drama, as both these sides look to kick off this electrifying series with a statement performance!

... MATCH DAY ...

Cricket's oldest rivalry is all set to take centerstage but not in the form of the Ashes but a couple of white-ball series as Australia travel to England for 3 T20Is and 5 ODIs, and very rarely do we get to see teams play a five-match bilateral ODI series which is great news for the cricket purists. First up, it is the T20I series with the first game to be played at the Utilita Oval in Southampton. Australia have already been in the UK for a few days now and have had some good practice in their 3-0 demolition of Scotland just a few days back. Also, a few of their players also participated in The Hundred and should be well-versed with the conditions which is a huge plus for the touring side. England on the other hand have a new-look side with a number of key players missing due to injuries and Moeen Ali recently retiring from all forms of international cricket hasn't helped their cause either. Skipper, Jos Buttler injured himself in the Vitality Blast and has now been sidelined with Phil Salt taking over the captaincy. Staying with the hosts, England, Brendon McCullum is all-set to take reigns as the white-ball coach as well after being at the helm of the red-ball side for quite a while now. The likes of former England greats like Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Flintoff will join McCullum's coaching staff as England look to revive their ruthless approach that won them the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2021 T20 World Cup as well. Sticking with some team news and England do have a fairly inexperienced side but they do have some hungry guys raring to go as well. Jofra Archer has been back in the side for a couple of months now and will look to be at his best and lead the likes of Josh Hull and John Turner. Jordan Cox, Jacob Bethell and Dan Mousley are exciting prospects in the middle order but a lot will ride on the shoulders of Liam Livingstone. England have gone on and announced their playing XI for the first game as the likes of Jordan Cox and Jacob Bethell have been handed debuts whereas Jamie Overton who has come in as Buttler's replacement will also make his T20I debut but will play as a genuine batter. Saqib Mahmood also plays hs first international game since March 2023 as the likes of Hull, Turner and Mousley miss out on the first game. Australia on the other hand have a similar side to the one that took on Scotland last week but the huge positive from them is the return of Josh Hazlewood from injury and he will be expected to play some role in this T20I series. The batting looks solid with Travis Head in solid form and the middle order of Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis and Cameron Green all making an impact against Scotland. That second opening spot is an area of concern and it will be interesting whether they keep faith in Jake Fraser-McGurk throughout the series or use the option of using skipper Mitchell Marsh or even someone else in that spot. The pace bowling looks well-rounded but it looks like the likes of Stoinis and Green will be heavily used as all-rounders rather than our and out batters. Another key battle will be between Adil Rashid and Adam Zampa with both proving to be genuine wicket-takers in recent times and overall it should be a very exciting series. Also, the last time these two sides met was in the Caribbean during the T20 World Cup and Australia won that contest rather comfortably. Will we see something similar here or will England's young guns step up and snatch a win in front of the home fans? We shall find out in due time.
