Commentary
Welcome back for India's reply. Harry Brook has gathered his men in a huddle before they take the field. Out walk the two Indian openers, Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma. Jofra Archer will kickstart proceedings with the new ball. Rohit is on strike. A slip and a gully in place. Away we go...
... THE RUN CHASE ...
Game on - It is all set up for an intriguing chase. Even with the older ball, there was enough movement on offer. Having troubled India's batters by relentlessly hitting the shorter lengths in the T20I series, the pace duo of Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue will be licking their lips at the prospect of exploiting the extra bounce Indian quicks found. With the sun beating down, it remains to be seen how much of a role the spinners will play. England have gone in with three spinners and also have the part-time options of Jacob Bethell and Joe Root. Do join us back in a bit for the chase.
Rescue act - With England in a spot of bother, a lot rested on Joe Root's shoulders to arrest the slide, and he rode his luck early on after being put down by Shivam Dube on 7. Will Jacks couldn't hang around for long, but Liam Dawson showcased his batting credentials with a maiden ODI fifty when his side needed it the most. The pair were watchful to begin with before the runs started to flow in that 121-run stand. Dawson eventually fell, and Root was left to run out of partners as Axar Patel completed the clean-up job with career-best ODI figures of 4/62.
Brar sparked the fightback - There was always expected to be some assistance with the new ball, and it did enough off the seam while the extra bounce kept the batters on their toes. Ben Duckett looked all at sea against Jasprit Bumrah early on, surviving a series of plays and misses and even copping a blow on the hand. Searching for a release, Duckett found it when Gurnoor Brar came into the attack and took a liking to the right-arm quick. With Bumrah out of the attack and Duckett beginning to find his rhythm, England looked set to seize control. But India came roaring back as Brar struck twice in quick succession before Bumrah and Prasidh returned to turn the game on its head.
Punch for punch - Joe Root left stranded at the other end as England have been out for 258. It was a bout where two heavyweights traded punches in the middle, and it made for thoroughly entertaining viewing. England, having slipped to 107/6, will be happy to have fought their way to a competitive total. India would have hoped to run through the rest of the batting after having England on the ropes, but they ran into stubborn resistance from Joe Root and Liam Dawson.
OUT! BOWLED'EM! Axar Patel wraps things up with a four-fer. England have been bowled out for 258. This is the arm ball, full and on middle, angles in. Josh Tongue lunges out to push it away but plays completely down the wrong line as the ball sneaks in the gap between bat and pad to crash into the stumps.
Shorter in length, on middle, Josh Tongue pats it to the right of the bowler.
Josh Tongue is the last man in.
OUT! STUMPED! Axar Patel gets his third wicket now. He anticipates the batter coming down the track and bowls this flatter, full and on middle and leg. Adil Rashid steps out of his crease to work it across the line, but the ball goes past the inside edge, behind, where KL Rahul does the rest. Root is stranded at the other end, and England are 258/9 now.
Slows it up, full and around leg, Adil Rashid advances and tries to clip it away but misses. The ball lobs up off his pads and drops to the leg side.
Floated, full and on middle, Joe Root uses his feet and lofts it to long on for a single.
Gurnoor Brar to bowl out now. Or will he? Brar has pulled up before his delivery stride. He is experiencing some discomfort in his right leg and has called for the physio. It looks like it could just be a cramp, and India will be hoping it's nothing serious. Brar is back on his feet, but he still looks to be in some discomfort and is walking off the field. Axar Patel to bowl this over.

Hard length and on off, Adil Rashid opens the bat face and guides it to deep third for a run.
Back of a length and on off, Joe Root runs it down to deep third for a single.

OUT! CAUGHT! Axar Patel has the last laugh here. He goes short again but pushes it through quicker, on leg. Jofra Archer once again moves back to pull it away but gets a bit cramped up to free his arms fully. He does not get the timing right as the ball flies straight towards deep mid-wicket, where Washington Sundar pouches it safely. England are 250/8.
SIX! Jofra Archer joins the party now! Axar Patel drags his length back, on middle and leg. Archer picks up the length early, rocks back and smacks it over the deep mid-wicket fence for a biggie. A spectator has taken the catch in the stands. Also, 250 comes up for England.
Fires this one, full and on leg, Joe Root comes down the track again and drags it to long on for one.
SIX! Nice use of the feet! Tossed up, full and around middle. Joe Root dances down the track to get to the pitch of it and tonks it over the long on fence for a biggie.
Floated, full and on off, Jofra Archer steers it away towards point for a run.
Flatter, short and around leg, Joe Root gets low to heave it away but gets an inside edge towards short fine for a single.
Reload! Joe Root showed his intentions early by charging down the track, but the umpire stopped Axar Patel in his run-up. The square-leg umpire asks KL Rahul to put his helmet back on. Jasprit Bumrah was initially set to bowl, and that prompted Rahul to hand over the helmet, but Shubman Gill had a late change of plan and stuck with Axar instead.

On a length, outside off. Root plays the drive to deep cover for a single.
Jofra Archer was gone had the throw hit. Fuller in length, at the sticks. Archer hops back and squeezes out an inside edge onto the pads. It rolls in front of point, and Root is nearly halfway through the run by the time Archer decides to set off. Rohit Sharma swoops in, picks the ball up with his right hand and fires in a throw at the bowling end but misses.
FOUR! Cleverly played. Into the surface, around off. Archer waits on it on the back foot and uses the pace of the ball. He rides the bounce and steers it in the gap between backward point and deep third for a boundary.
Commentary
Next stop Cardiff - That brings us to the end of an entertaining contest, with India taking a 1-0 lead in the series and moving a step closer to sealing it, while England will be eager to bounce back and restore parity. The action now shifts to Sophia Gardens in Cardiff for the second ODI on Thursday, 16th July, with the first ball scheduled for 12 pm GMT (5.30 pm IST). As always, be sure to join us a little early for all the build-up. Until then, it's goodbye and take care!
The victorious skipper of India - Shubman Gill says seeing the middle and lower order contribute with the bat gives him a lot of confidence, both as a captain and as a top-order batter. He explains that the decision to bowl first was driven more by the team combination than the conditions, adding that with a more experienced batting unit than bowling attack, India were confident of chasing even a total in excess of 300. Gill is pleased with the way the bowlers started in the first 6-7 overs and, even more so, with how they fought back after England began to gain the upper hand. Looking ahead, he says India will continue to test different combinations to find the right balance and depth in both batting and bowling. With conditions similar to those in South Africa, he feels this series presents an ideal opportunity to experiment and assess what works best.
The captain of England - Harry Brook admits England's middle-order collapse, where they lose five wickets for just 20 runs, proved to be the decisive phase of the innings. While pleased with the fight shown by his side, he feels that losing wickets in a cluster left England with too much to do. Brook credits Joe Root and Liam Dawson for their crucial partnership, saying it gave England a fighting total after they found themselves in serious trouble. However, he believes 260 was still below par and that a score in the region of 300-320 would have been much more competitive and brought their spinners more into play. Reflecting on the conditions, Brook says England felt the pitch slowed down as the match progressed. Says they were confident they had enough at the halfway stage if it continued to behave the same way. He also adds that team selection will continue to be based on the surface, while admitting the spinners were unable to have the influence England had hoped for.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Axar Patel wins the award for his all-round brilliance. 57* off 52 with the bat and 4/62 with the ball. Patel says this is the perfect start for the team after the disappointing T20I series. Adds that he is pleased with the way he performed. Shares that his plan was to bowl stump-to-stump while varying his pace. He also credits India's strong start with the bat for keeping them ahead of the game. On the partnership with Washington Sundar, Axar says the focus was on building a stand and finishing the chase.
Presentation Time...
Not enough runs - England will rue a few missed opportunities in both selection and execution. With plenty of assistance on offer for the seamers, they may wonder if an extra hit-the-deck quick would have been the better option. Harry Brook's decision at the toss was influenced by the expectation that the spinners would come into play, but they struggled to make any real impact. Sam Curran and Jofra Archer struck in quick succession after an inconsistent start, but the hosts failed to build on that momentum, allowing Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer to take the game away with a century stand. Brook's sharp run-out and Josh Tongue's wicket briefly reignited hopes, but England simply didn't have enough runs on the board to mount a sustained challenge.
England recover after a collapse in the middle - After electing to bat, England posted a competitive total, but it could have been much worse. Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell negotiated a tricky opening spell with a 61-run stand before both fell in the same over, triggering a collapse to 80/5. Joe Root then made the most of an early reprieve on 7, combining with Liam Dawson for a crucial 121-run partnership. Both brought up well-crafted fifties, with Dawson registering his highest ODI score, but England couldn't finish strongly as Root remained unbeaten on 76. India were impressive with the ball, though they would have hoped to wrap things up sooner. Axar Patel starred with four wickets, while Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna claimed two apiece, with Jasprit Bumrah and Shivam Dube picking up one each.
Calm heads finish the job - After the mini-collapse, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar ensured there were no further alarms. The left-handed pair soaked up the pressure before taking control with smart strike rotation and timely boundaries. Axar crowned a fine all-round return to the ODI side with a well-crafted half-century to go with his four-wicket haul, while Sundar also brought up a deserved fifty. Their unbeaten 102-run partnership shut the door on England, with Sundar striking the winning runs as India sealed the chase with less than five overs to spare.
Gill leads before India hit a roadblock - India made a brisk start to the chase with Shubman Gill setting the tone before back-to-back wickets of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli left them at 48/2. Unfazed, Gill looked in sublime touch and, alongside Shreyas Iyer, stitched together a fluent 101-run stand that put the visitors firmly in control, with the skipper bringing up a classy half-century. But the momentum shifted dramatically as Gill, hampered by cramps throughout his innings, was forced to retire hurt on 80. India then stumbled, losing Iyer to some terrible running between the wickets before KL Rahul followed soon after, leaving the visitors needing another 99 runs to seal the chase.
Men in Blue draw first blood - India have finally opened their account on this tour of England. After enduring a 4-0 whitewash in the T20I series that also saw them surrender the No. 1 ranking to the hosts, the Men in Blue have bounced back in style with a commanding performance to draw first blood in the ODI series. The victory also extends India's dominance over England in this format, marking a sixth consecutive ODI win, while ending England's seven-match winning streak at Edgbaston. Fittingly, the last team to beat England in an ODI at this venue was also India, way back in 2014.
SIX! Washington Sundar finishes the game with a big hit and also brings up his FIFTY. India win by 6 wickets to go 1-0 up in the series. Flighted delivery by Rashid, a bit too full, on middle. Sundar crouches to get under the ball and launches it downtown towards the sight screen for a six. The 100-run stand also comes up between these two all-rounders.
Pushed through, on a good length. Axar knocks it in front of mid off and sneaks in a quick single.

Rapped on the pads! Not given. Doing too much, it seems and might have pitched outside leg as well. There comes the surprise inswinger, full and landing around the line of the leg stump. Duckett hurriedly tries to get his bat down but is beaten for pace and wears it on the front pad. The replays confirm that the ball pitched outside leg and the impact seemed outside the line as well.
Pitches it up again, on off. Duckett leans into the drive and times it well, but can't get it past Virat Kohli at a catching cover, who moves to his left to make the stop.
And again! Starting from middle and leg before shaping away from the left-hander. This is fuller in length and Ben pushes out in front but is beaten past the outside edge.
Goes past the bat! This is fuller in length, pushed across the left-hander. A tentative poke at the delivery by Duckett and he is lucky not to nick it behind.
Bumrah steams in from over the wicket and hits the back of a length, on off. It moves away in the air, and Duckett watchfully dabs it down on the off side.
All in readiness for the series opener! We can see the Indian players spread out and take their respective field positions. Virat Kohli is also having a playful chat with one of the umpires, Kumar Dharmasena. A new opening pair for England, as Ben Duckett will have Jacob Bethell as his partner. Jasprit Bumrah has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...
United for a cause - Edgbaston will turn blue today in support of the annual 'Blue for Bob' campaign. The initiative raises awareness and provides support for those affected by prostate cancer, while honouring the legacy of the late Bob Willis.
India (Playing XI) - Shubman Gill (C), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar, KL Rahul (WK), Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Gurnoor Brar, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna.
England (Playing XI) - Jacob Bethell, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook (C), Jos Buttler (WK), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Jofra Archer, Liam Dawson, Josh Tongue and Adil Rashid.
The skipper of India - Shubman Gill says that they were anyway looking to bowl first. With most of the squad coming off the T20I series, he feels they are already in the groove, while the rest have settled in nicely. Gill adds that the atmosphere in the camp has been excellent. Shubman acknowledges the importance of the series, especially with conditions likely to be similar to those expected in South Africa for next year's World Cup. Believes it is a good opportunity to test different combinations and players. He says it is great to have the experienced players back in the ODI setup, adding that their presence brings immense value to the side. Gill shares that he is excited for the series and that he has fond memories of playing in England, particularly at Edgbaston. Informs that they are going with four pacers, including Shivam Dube and the two spinners are Axar Patel and Washington Sundar.
The captain of England - Harry Brook says it looks like a good surface, but they are not sure how it will play, and they fancy themselves putting on a good score, and then maybe the spinners will get some help later on. Brook mentions that they are approaching this series the same way they approached the T20Is. It is about assessing the conditions quickly, communicating well and seeing where they are at the end of the day. The English skipper shares that having a similar group across formats gives him a lot of confidence and shows the trust they have in the squad. Reckons they are looking forward to giving a good challenge to India. Harry says that they have struggled a bit in this format over the last couple of years, but hopefully they can turn the page and start performing consistently. Ends by saying that they are going with two spinners and three seamers.
TOSS - All in readiness for the coin to go up in Birmingham. 'Heads' is the call from Shubman Gill, but it has come down as a Tail. England elect to BAT first.
200 not out - Jos Buttler is all set to play his 200th ODI. Fittingly, he receives his commemorative cap from Eoin Morgan, the only other England player to achieve the feat.
PITCH REPORT - Former India pacer Varun Aaron is near the deck. He says that it is bright and sunny in Birmingham. Adds that the dimensions are 67 meters all over, with just one part 2 meters short behind the wicket. Mentions that looking at the wicket, it is good news for the fast bowlers because there is a good covering of grass. Says that when he puts his thumb on it, it creates a decent indent, which means there is a lot of moisture on it. He reckons the team winning the toss will look to bowl first and get early wickets.
Looking for a revival - England have looked only a shadow of the side that revolutionised white-ball cricket under Eoin Morgan and won the 2019 ODI World Cup. Since the 2023 ODI World Cup, they have won just two of their eight ODI series. Yet, there is reason for optimism. Edgbaston has become a fortress, with England winning their last 7 ODIs at the venue. For English fans, 14 July brings back memories of the 2019 World Cup triumph. 7 years on, the hosts will hope the anniversary ushers in a new chapter in their ODI journey. Stay tuned for the toss and team news.
Building towards 2027 - Since Shubman Gill took over as ODI captain, India have endured mixed results, losing series to Australia and New Zealand, with their only series win coming against Afghanistan. However, their record in England offers plenty of encouragement. No touring side has a better win percentage in ODIs in England, and Birmingham has been India's happiest hunting ground, with more ODI wins here than at any other venue. Since the 2023 ODI World Cup, the Men in Blue also boast the second-best win percentage among Full Member nations in the format, underlining why they remain the team to beat.
Time for ODIs - The T20I series was anything but competitive, with England handing India an absolute shellacking. That saw the hosts dethrone India at the top of the T20I rankings, but the picture is very different in the 50-over format. India sit comfortably at the summit of the ODI rankings, while England are down in 8th. Let's hope that gulf in the rankings doesn't translate onto the field and that we are in for a cracking series. Let's get going in Birmingham.
... MATCH DAY ...
Round 1 of 3 - The white-ball tour hits its final stretch with a 3-ODI series, pitching camp in Birmingham and Cardiff before the curtains come down at Lord's. After being drubbed by England 4-0 in the T20I series, this wounded Indian side will be fueled with a hunger for redemption and resurrect their white-ball dominance in the longer limited-overs format. England, by winning the T20I series, have snatched the No. 1 position from the Indians in the ICC rankings, but when it comes to the ODIs, it's India who sit atop the pile, while the hosts find themselves marooned at eighth, trailing teams like Afghanistan. With the 2027 World Cup already casting its shadow, this series becomes the opening examination for both sides, and neither will fancy stumbling out of the blocks. Different format, different picture - Since the last ODI World Cup, both teams' journeys have been pretty noteworthy. England's journey has been nothing short of underwhelming, managing just two bilateral series wins in eight since November 2023, with wins coming only against West Indies and Sri Lanka. Sandwiched in between was a 3-0 whitewash at the hands of India, suffered right on Indian soil. And at home as well, they have an okay-ish record, winning five ODIs and losing six out of eleven in the same span. India, on the other hand, don't exactly boast a screamingly dominant run either. A mixed bag of results reads four ODI series wins out of seven played since the last global event, a record that's solid without being spectacular. Those defeats include series losses to Sri Lanka and Australia, along with a historic dent to their pride when New Zealand pulled off a first-ever ODI series win on Indian soil earlier this year. But India arrive with confidence restored after their latest home outing, where they steamrolled Afghanistan in a clean sweep. Gen-Next leads the charge - Two of the game's sharpest young minds, wielding contrasting styles with the bat, will lock horns, leading their respective sides. Shubman Gill for India, Harry Brook for England. Both were handed the reins in 2025, and both now shoulder the task of steering their teams into a fresh chapter of white-ball cricket. Fittingly, both also happen to be the highest-ranked ODI batters within their own camps. What sharpens this duel further is how prolifically both have churned out runs since taking the armband. Brook has averaged a hefty 60.71 since stepping into the role, stockpiling 850 runs studded with three fifties and three hundreds. Gill, despite featuring in nearly half as many matches as his counterpart, has been every bit as ruthless, averaging 59.4 across eight innings for 416 runs. Their numbers so far in ODIs in 2026 alone are downright insane. Gill sits at an average of 93.25, with Brook not far behind at 92. Their methods with the bat couldn't be more different. Gill leans into a measured, conservative game while Brook thrives on all-out aggression, but both have found their own route to run-scoring gold. The big daddies collide - Boasting over 26,500 ODI runs between the two of them, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, arguably the most prolific pair Indian cricket has produced, return to fortify the batting order. This duo has plundered more runs on English turf than anyone else in the current squad, with the Ro-Ko pairing, now confined to this one format alone, having stacked upwards of a thousand runs apiece on these shores. Mirroring India's Ro-Ko axis, England counter with their own grizzled campaigners in the Jos-Joe combination. Root sits unrivalled as England's all-time leading run-getter in the format, while Buttler occupies third spot on that same list, having already elbowed past Ian Bell. Add to that Root's standing among the top scorers against India specifically, and this battle of the old guard promises to be every bit as fascinating as the one brewing between the new generation. Steady hands in the middle - Whereas the likes of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan have been the steady pillars of the Indian middle order, as their contributions have quietly held the innings together, even when the top order has hogged the headlines. Another name making a comeback into the ODI setup is Shivam Dube. Last seen in the format back in August 2024 against Sri Lanka, this recall marks his return to the 50-over fold after a gap of nearly two years. Whereas for England, that responsibility falls on the shoulders of the likes of Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Buttler himself, and the two southpaws, Bethell and Duckett. It's a group that brings its own flavour of power and versatility, with Curran and Jacks lending all-round depth, the left-handed duo of Bethell and Duckett offering a different approach. Whereas James Coles from Sussex has received his maiden ODI call-up as well. He can bat right-handed and can turn up with his left-arm orthodox spin as well. Battle of the bests with the ball- This series also marks the return of Jasprit Bumrah, who will be turning out in international colours for the first time since a lean IPL 2026, where he managed just 4 wickets. Strikingly, this will also be Bumrah's first ODI appearance since the 2023 World Cup final. Bumrah has always relished English conditions, having picked up 30 wickets in the format here, the joint most by any Indian bowler in ODIs, levelled with Ravindra Jadeja. He leads the pace attack featuring the mainstays Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh. England counter with Jofra Archer, who also returns to the ODI fold after nearly a year out of the format. He will spearhead the pace attack alongside Josh Tongue, who is set to make his ODI debut in this series. Both were part of the pace unit that obliterated India through the recent T20Is with their precision and pace. Gus Atkinson and Saqib Mahmood provide the other frontline options, alongside Sam Curran, who has rediscovered his rhythm with the ball of late. In the spin department, the duel to watch out for will be between Adil Rashid and Kuldeep Yadav. Among full-member nations, both stand as the leading wicket-taking spinners for their respective sides since the start of 2023, Kuldeep leading the way with 75 scalps in that span, with Rashid not far behind on 73. Team form (Last 5 completed ODIs, recent first) - ENG - WWLLL | IND - WWWLL. Aiming to repeat the dose - England would be eagerly waiting to execute the same dominance they displayed in the T20Is in the longer white-ball format. But lurking beneath that confidence is an ODI record against India that's been nothing short of threadbare. They've managed just one win from their last eight face-offs and haven't tasted a single triumph over the Men in Blue since 2022. That lone victory came at Lord's, back when Jos Buttler still helmed the side. India, meanwhile, will look to preserve their own stranglehold over England, having lost just a solitary bilateral ODI series to them since 2013, a 2-1 defeat back in 2018. However, Birmingham has been something of a happy hunting ground for the hosts lately. England have won their last seven ODIs there, and will be eager to keep that streak alive.
