Commentary

That is all from this game. England keep their hopes alive with this win while Oman end their World Cup journey without a win. The action continues in the World Cup. Join us at 6 am IST (12.30 am GMT) as Afghanistan takes on Papua New Guinea. Join us early on for the build up. Till then, cheers!

Jos Buttler, the skipper of England says the tone was set by the bowlers as they took the early wickets and it’s a good job done by the team today. Adds that their was a bit of extra bounce plus the high release of Topley and Jofra challenged the batters a lot. Mentions their bowling is a challenging one and such condition make them even more lethal. Mentions that they were looking to be ultra aggressive with the bat and help the NRR so the fall of wickets doesn’t bother them. Closes by saying that he is not taken away by people counting England out so early and it is not their job to think about it and they’ll be preparing for Namibia in the coming days.

Aqib Ilyas, the skipper of Oman says there was a big collapse in the batting order, the top order has failed in this tournament. Adds the associate teams don't get to play bowlers who bowl around 145 clicks and it plays on the back of the mind. Reckons they were confused with the bat, to hit hard or to defend and feels the English players were somtimes too close to them while fielding. Mentions the bowlers have done well throughout the tournament so can't blame much. Feels they could have finished on a high but they'll look for positives out of this match.

Adil Rashid is the Player of the Match for his brilliant spell of 4 for 11. He is up for a quick chat and says they bowled well with Jofra Archer setting the tone and himself and Mark Wood continuing it. Adds that the ball was turning and the early wickets helped. Mentions that the surface was helpful for the bowlers and it was spinning which helped him a lot. Also says he was looking for a fifer but he feels delighted with the victory. Closes by saying that they are looking to play one game at a time and now they’ll start to prepare for Namibia.

...Presentation next...

In reply, England lost two wickets but as informed earlier, what mattered most was how quickly can they chase it down. Jos Buttler took the job on his shoulders and helped chase it down in 3.1 overs. Just look at the Net Run Rate now, England had a negative NRR of 1.80 and now they stand with 3 points and a NRR of positive 3.08. They have given themselves a shot to go for the next round. Oman on the other hand were completely beaten, cannot write much about them as the defending champions were really on a mission and Oman were taken down by some world-class bowlers.

The victory was never in doubt for England but more importanly how many overs does England eat up was the question! Just 19 balls is what England needed to chase it down. With a negative net run rate, England wouldn't have asked for a better game set up than this. After the horrible start to the campaign and a lot of unwanted noise from outside the ground, England needed this game to go in their favour and the crickeing gods showered them with a huge comprehensive win here. It was set up by the bowlers though. They cooked the Oman batting order and in a blink of an eye all of them disappered. Adil Rashid was the star as he took four wickets while Jofra Archer and Mark Wood ended with three wickets each. The highest score for Oman was 11 by Shoaib Khan.

Commentary

We are back. The players are out in the middle. Jos Buttler and Phil Salt to open for England. Bilal Khan to bowl first.

... The Run Chase ...

Mark Wood from England is up for a quick chat. He says they had a point to prove and he is pleased for the whole bowling group. Tells there is some tennis bounce and the seamers used it well. Shares it is skiddy and shiny. Mentions that the spikes don't work most of the time and he slips most of the time. Ends up appreciating the bowling spell by Adil Rashid.

The bowling from the defending champions was top-notch. They poured their anger over the previous mishaps from the tournament on the Oman batters. The pace of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood was unplayable for the Oman batters while the spin of Adil Rashid was not easy for them to read either. Adil Rashid picked up 4 and gave away just 11 off his 4 overs. Mark Wood and Jofra Archer had identical figures as they both gave away 12 and took 3 each. With not a lot to chase the English batters would look to chase this down inside the powerplay and boost their NRR. Will they be able to do that? We shall find it out soon with the chase in a while.

After being asked to bat first, Oman never got off to any sort of groove as they were pinned back to the wall from the get-go. The side managed to score just 25 runs and lost 4 wickets inside the powerplay. The bowlers kept on bowling those consistent lines and lengths and made life even more difficult for the batters. The batters couldn’t get out of the jail and wickets kept tumbling. The side were soon 35 for 7 after the end of 10 overs and the last 3 wickets didn’t add much either as the team was bundled out for 47 in total. The batters were simply outclassed by one of the finest bowling attacks. Only Shoaib Khan managed to get into the double figures for Oman.

The title holders have dismantled the Oman batting unit as they bundle them out of 47 runs in just 13.2 overs. A clinical bowling performance from the defending champions puts them in the front seat to boost their NRR. This also happens to be the lowest total England have bowled out any of their opponents in T20I cricket.

13.2W

OUT! GONE! That is it! Quick work from England! A pacey-length delivery on middle, Khan gets across and tries to wrists it away but top edges it to short fine leg. Jos Buttler calls for it, runs across and gobbles it up. OMAN END WITH 47 ON THE BOARD.

It is time for the national anthems. It will be Oman's first followed by the national anthem of England.

PITCH REPORT - Nasser Hussain and Aaron Finch are pitchside and says there is not a huge amount of grass and the pitch is hard and even. The pitch will offer true bounce and the pacers will enjoy bowling on this track. Adds that the breeze across the ground will suit the left armers from the Curtley Ambrose end.

The skipper of Oman Aqib Ilyas says, they were looking to bowl first but they are not dependent on toss as the surface looks flat. Adds that results are important but learning is even more important for a team such as theirs. Mentions that they have to put on a better fielding effort and the rest is good. Informs about the change with Fayyaz Butt coming in.

The skipper of England Jos Buttler says, they’ll bowl first and would look to chase down the total. Adds that they will look to try and win the game and see what happens in the other game and they have had a good prep leading into this game. Mentions that the NRR will play a bit at the back of their mind but the key is to win and get points on board. Informs about the change, Reece Topley comes in the playing XI.

Oman (Playing XI) - Kashyap Prajapati, Pratik Athavale (WK), Aqib Ilyas (C), Zeeshan Maqsood, Khalid Kail, Ayaan Khan, Shoaib Khan, Mehran Khan, Fayyaz Butt, Kaleemullah, Bilal Khan.

England (Playing XI) - Phil Salt, Jos Buttler (C) (WK), Will Jacks, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Reece Topley.

TOSS - England have won the coin flip and they have decided to BOWL first.

Oman on the other hand, have played good with troubling both Namibia and Australia up to a point in their first two games while they were outclassed by Scotland. The side lost in the super over in a low-scoring encounter against Namibia while they were taken to the cleaners in their next couple of games. The side would be looking to end the tournament on a high and spoil the party for the defending champions by inflicting a damaging defeat on them. The side have had issues right at the top with the bat with Kashyap Prajapati and Naseem Khushi not performing to their abilities. The inclusion of Pratik Athavale has brought stability to the side but it is for the other batters around him to take the responsibility and play better. The bowlers have done well, but they ran out of gas in the last game against Scotland and they would be pumped up to face the world champions and perform well. Can England win this big and stay in the mix for Super 8 or will Oman end their campaign on a high with a victory? We shall find out soon. Stay tuned for toss and team updates.

England’s campaign is hanging by a thin thread as they have not had the best of starts to the tournament with their opener being washed out followed by a loss to their arch-rivals Australia. The English side are currently sitting fourth in the table and they need to win the next couple of games with a big margin and rely on the Aussies to beat Scotland to advance to the Super 8. The players of England shall not focus a lot on what’s not in their hands and should bring out their A-games against Oman and stay in the hunt for advancing to the next stage. The side has all it takes to demolish any side on their day, and they need to do that in their remaining games. The batting relies heavily on the top order that consists of Jos Buttler, Phil Salt and Will Jacks while the middle order needs to buckle up and players like Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Harry Brook needs to step up a notch and perform better. The bowling doesn’t look that threatening despite the comeback of Jofra Archer in the side. England needs to play like the defending champions if they are to stay in the hunt for their title defense else they’ll be sent packing even before their last game.

Hello and welcome to everyone tuning in. It is time for game no. 28 as the defending champions England take on Oman in a crucial game of Group B at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua.

... MATCHDAY ...

From the high of the 2019 ODI World Cup, England came crashing down at the 2023 ODI World Cup, failing miserably in their title defense. Now, England's 2022 T20 World Cup title defence is on the brink of a similar fate unless a remarkable turnaround occurs. This comeback must start with their game against Oman at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua. A washout in their opening encounter against Scotland, followed by a tough defeat against arch-rivals Australia, has put England on the edge of elimination. Jos Buttler and his men have a lot of ground to cover to advance to the Super 8 stage. They need to beat the two eliminated teams, Oman and Namibia, by significant margins and hope that Australia defeat Scotland heavily, allowing England to edge out the Scotts on NRR. Will Jacks and Phil Salt have not been able to replicate their Indian T20 League heroics at the World Cup. However, Salt and Jos Buttler had a brisk start in their last outing, and the opening pair will be looking to build on that performance. Other than Jacks, Jonny Bairstow and Harry Brook are yet to make a significant impact and must fire quickly. England's bowling has also been underwhelming and needs to improve swiftly. With Sam Curran and Reece Topley yet to feature in the tournament, either or both might be brought into the pace attack mix. As for Oman, they were the first team to be knocked out of contention for the Super 8 stage and now have only pride to play for. After a narrow defeat in the Super Over and a subsequent fair and square loss to Australia, the Asian side will aim to take England with them to the exit door with an upset. Like England, neither Oman's batting nor bowling units have clicked as hoped. Pratik Athavale, Naseem Khushi, Zeeshan Maqsood, and Ayaan Khan will need to step up with the bat. Their star all-rounder and captain, Aqib Ilyas, is yet to make a mark on the big stage, and there could be no better occasion than against the defending champions. Bilal Khan, the most experienced bowler in the Oman setup, has underperformed in terms of wickets, and he will be crucial in this encounter. A collective effort from the likes of Shakeel Ahmad, Kaleemullah, and Mehran Khan will be key to Oman's success in this clash. Can England revive their campaign, or will Oman deliver a knockout blow? We shall find out.
