Commentary

That's a wrap - We move to Chennai now for the third and final ODI of the series, which will take place on Saturday, June 20. The match will get underway at 8 am GMT (1.30 pm IST). For now, you can switch tabs and follow the action from the second Test between England and New Zealand, or tune in to the Women's T20 World Cup, where India are taking on the Netherlands, and later in the day, South Africa are set to face Pakistan. Until then, it's goodbye from us. Cheers!

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - For the second game running, India's captain Shubman Gill takes home the award. He scored 154 runs off 110 balls with his innings studded with 22 fours and two sixes. Gill says that his body is a bit sore and he got a lot of cramps, but he is feeling better now. Adds that he is feeling confident and is happy to contribute to the team. Reckons that it wouldn't have mattered even if they had bowled first, as the wicket didn't change much. He further says that their pace bowlers are doing a great job and ends by saying that the team is in a pretty good space.

The captain of Afghanistan - Hashmatullah Shahidi admits they were not good enough on the day and refuses to put the result down solely to the toss. He feels they did not bowl well, particularly in the first 20 overs, allowing India to seize the momentum and dictate terms from the outset. On sending Darwish Rasooli ahead of him, Hashmatullah shares that Rasooli was struggling with cramps, but he wanted to bat, and the team management backed him to do so, given his ability to strike the ball cleanly. Looking ahead, Shahidi says there have been plenty of learnings from what has been a tough series so far. He remains hopeful that they can put in a better performance in the final ODI in Chennai.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

A quick word - Arshdeep Singh says that it feels good that the results are coming their way. He says that he is happy to see new faces in the bowling lineup. Mentions that he wasn't aware that he was on a hat-trick, and he knows it now. Reckons that they follow what is best for the team, and the results follow. He ends by saying that everyone who comes here is confident and they are hungry for success, and everyone tries to enjoy the game.

Gill and Kishan called the shots - After Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bowl first, they were sent on a leather hunt. Shubman Gill picked up right where he left off in the previous game, while Ishan Kishan took his time early on before cutting loose. The pair put India firmly in control with a commanding 224-run partnership. Rashid Khan looked the most likely to make something happen for the visitors, but left the field due to some discomfort. By the time he returned, the damage had already been done. Those who followed after the departure of the two set batters could not quite provide the finish the home side were hoping for. Not many times do you see a side post 402 and still feel they left a few runs out there, but that was very much the case here.

A mountain too steep to scale - In Afghanistan's batting reply, Rahmanullah Gurbaz threw caution to the wind, but not for long enough. Whatever momentum the tourists gained while he was at the crease quickly evaporated after his dismissal, and the innings hit a roadblock. The inability to keep the scoreboard ticking meant the required rate kept climbing. India went into the game with just five specialist bowling options because Nitish Kumar Reddy was unavailable due to a thigh issue, but Afghanistan never really managed to put that attack under any pressure. Rahmat Shah offered stubborn resistance, but it was academic and nothing more.

Series secured - India have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series with one match still to play. Afghanistan were competitive in the series opener, but here in Lucknow, it turned out to be a one-sided affair. The visitors won the toss, but very little else went their way thereafter as India effectively batted them out of the contest.

OUT! CAUGHT! That's the game. Darwish Rasooli will not return to bat. India win by 170 runs and seal the series by going 2-0 up in this three-match series. Short ball does the trick for Prince Yadav. He bangs it short, on middle and leg, Rahmat Shah swivels and looks to pull it, but doesn't time it well. The ball goes flat towards deep fine leg. Gurnoor Brar moves a bit forward and dives to take a magnificent catch just above the ground.

Not a lot going the bowler's way in that appeal. Yorker attempted by Brar but it comes out as a low full toss, swinging back in, on leg. Sami has a heave across the line but is beaten on the inside edge and wears it on the back pad. It rolls behind to deep third and the batters cross over. A prolonged appeal from Gurnoor but it is turned down. Shreyas Iyer wants to take a chance and he takes the review. No bat involved but on Ball Tracking, the impact is umpire's call and the ball is going past the leg pole. India lose their review.

Review time. LBW not given. Shreyas Iyer has sent it upstairs to have a check. The replays show that it was missing the leg stump by a fair margin. The on-field decision stays NOT OUT.

Commentary

Welcome back for the run chase. The umpires are out in the middle. Indian players are huddled in the middle, before they take their respective field positions. For now, Shubman Gill is off the field, and Shreyas Iyer will take on the duties of the captain. It is going to be a tough task for Afghanistan. Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz open up for Afghanistan. Arshdeep Singh to start with the new ball. Let's go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

A late Afghan fightback - The scoring rate slowed down significantly after the set batters fell, triggering a late lower-order collapse, but the damage was already done. Left-arm spinner Nangeyalia Kharote was the pick of the bowlers under pressure, picking up 4 wickets, while Rashid Khan bagged three. AM Ghazanfar and Mohammad Saleem also chipped in with a wicket apiece. It is the eighth time India have crossed 400 in ODIs, leaving Afghanistan with a monumental mountain to climb. Can Afghanistan come up with something special? Or will India continue to dominate with the ball as well? We shall find out soon. Chase is coming up shortly...

A record-breaking masterclass - What followed was absolute carnage. Gill was aggressive from the get-go, while Kishan played second fiddle early on before exploding into life. The duo put on a massive 224-run stand partnership in 141 balls to get the game totally under control. Both batters targeted the boundaries at will, leaving the fielding side completely clueless and searching for answers. Kishan departed after a stellar 125, but Gill kept motoring along. Gill fell in the 43rd over, but India were already past the 350-run mark by then.

India finish with 402! The hosts have put on a sensational batting display to cross the 400-run mark. While Yashasvi Jaiswal fell early, skipper Rohit Sharma gave the innings quick momentum with a brisk 48 before walking back in the 14th over. The Afghan bowlers found some early joy, but it proved to be a fleeting moment of relief. His dismissal brought Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan together, and that is when the real fireworks began for the Men in Blue.

49.51W

OUT! PRINCE YADAV IS RUN OUT! India have been bowled out for 402. Sami goes full, on off. Prince Yadav stays leg side and swings with all his might. It goes off the inner half wide of deep square leg. Prince takes the first run hard and commits to the second run despite Kuldeep refusing the second run with his hand up. Prince does not spot the hand gesture and keeps running. He is almost at the batting end before retreating. The throw from the deep comes to the keeper. Rahmanullah Gurbaz collects the ball and lobs it towards the bowler. Bilal Sami gets behind the stumps, gathers the ball and whips the bails off with Prince found well short despite his attempt to get back.

49.41

Delivers it on a short of a length, on middle. Kuldeep pivots on the back foot and pulls it through square leg for a run.

49.31

Fuller and wider on off, Prince pushes it wide of cover for one more run. The 400 comes up for India. It is the 8th time that the Men in Blue have brought up 400 in ODI cricket.

49.20

A bit fuller now, on the off stump. Prince tries to go big on the off side but mistimes it back to the bowler.

49.12

On a length, angled in at the off stump. Prince Yadav clears the front leg and has a swipe across the line. Shanks it off the inner half towards deep mid-wicket, where the fielder charges in but cannot pick the ball up in one go. He lets it through, allowing the batters to take one more.

Last over to go now. India are 397/9. Can they get over 400? Bilal Sami to bowl the final over.

That's a good catch from Rahmanullah Gurbaz behind the stumps. Prince Yadav is the last batter in.

48.5W

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Strangled down leg. A fine take by Rahmanullah Gurbaz. On the shorter side, turning down leg. Sundar walks inside the line for the tickle. The ball grazes the inside edge on its way behind to the keeper. Gurbaz is unsighted by the batter standing in front of him but he moves well to his right. Gets his gloves in the right position and the ball nestles into his gloves. India are now 9 down for 396.

48.41

Tossed up, on off. Kuldeep presses forward and drops it with soft hands beside the strip on the leg side for a quick single. Rahmanullah Gurbaz gets to the ball quickly and fires in a throw at the batting end but misses.

48.31

On a nagging length, on middle. Washington turns it in front of square on the leg side for one more.

48.21

Cheeky! Fuller and attacking the front pad. Kuldeep leans across for the lap and ends up scooping it off the back of the bat over the keeper's head for a single.

48.11

Arshdeep Singh holes out. Kuldeep Yadav walks in to bat now.

Arshdeep gets the front pad out of the way and uses his bottom hand to go down the ground. Fails to get hold of it and hits it flat down to long on. Rashid Khan sprints forward and takes a safe catch. From being 320/2, India are now 392/8.

47.52

Just out of reach! Dug in short, over middle. Rahmat Shah shimmies down the track and goes for the pull. Gets it high on the bat and it is spooned to mid-wicket, where Ishan Kishan runs over his left shoulder and stretches out his left hand. He lands hard on the ground and seems to have jarred his neck. The ball goes away for a couple of runs.

DRINKS BREAK! Realistically, the chase is well beyond Afghanistan's reach now. Rahmat Shah has held firm at one end and shown plenty of resilience, but the change of gears Afghanistan would have hoped for from him never quite materialised. India have kept things tight throughout and will be keen to close this out quickly. In fact, they may only be two wickets away from doing so, with Darwish Rasooli having retired hurt due to a hamstring issue. With little left to gain from this game and the result all but decided, it seems unlikely that he will return to bat.

49.20

The 87-run stand has been broken, and with that, the players will take a drinks break. Afghanistan desperately needed that breakthrough after India dominated much of the first phase of the innings. The visitors have been a little inconsistent with the ball, but Rashid Khan has looked threatening in the 7 balls he has bowled so far and could prove to be a handful on this surface, where there has been just enough help on offer for the spinners. India have scored at a healthy rate with Shubman Gill picking up right where he left off in the previous game. The hosts will want to keep ticking along through the middle phase. Ishan Kishan joins the Indian skipper out in the middle.

The bell has been rung, and it is time to get going in Lucknow. A sparse crowd in attendance, but expect more to come in later in the day. Yashasvi Jaiswal walks out to open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma. Final few words from the Afghan head coach, Richard Pybus, in the huddle. Afghanistan are starting with spin in the form of AM Ghazanfar. Jaiswal is on strike. A slip in place. Let's play...

Afghanistan (Playing XI) - Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK), Ibrahim Zadran, Sediqullah Atal, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi (C), Darwish Rasooli (On debut) (In for Mohammad Nabi), Rashid Khan, Nangeyalia Kharote (In for Azmatullah Omarzai), AM Ghazanfar, Mohammad Saleem and Bilal Sami (In for Ziaur Rahman).

India (Playing XI) - Yashasvi Jaiswal (In for Nitish Kumar Reddy), Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (C), Ishan Kishan (WK), Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav (In for Harsh Dubey), Gurnoor Brar, Arshdeep Singh and Prince Yadav (On debut) (In for Prasidh Krishna).

The skipper of India - Shubman Gill says that they would have bowled first as well because of the team combination of going with 5 bowlers in this match. Shares that the focus is on putting themselves in different situations and gaining experience, whether that means chasing a target or defending one. Shubman informs that they have made three changes. Adds that Prince Yadav makes his debut, Nitish Kumar Reddy was unavailable for selection due to a quad issue, while Kuldeep Yadav and Yashasvi Jaiswal come into the side.

The captain of Afghanistan - Hashmatullah Shahidi says that the wicket looks fresh, and it could spin a bit in the first half, so they want to bowl first. Mentions that in the last game they played well, but they didn't have enough partnerships, so hopefully the boys learn from it and come good in this game. Informs that Mohammad Nabi misses out due to illness, while Azmatullah Omarzai got injured during the practice session. Further says that Darwish Rasooli makes his debut, and Bilal Sami also features today.

TOSS - We are all set for the flip of the coin. Hashmatullah Shahidi calls it correctly, and Afghanistan elect to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Deep Dasgupta and Graeme Swann are near the deck. Deep starts by informing that the pitch is a mix of black and red soil. He observes that the surface is a little patchy in places. Graeme points out that the ground staff have only just removed the covers from the strip and were understandably concerned about the sun baking the pitch too much. Swann feels the pitch could slow up as the game progresses and says that, given the conditions, he would have no hesitation in batting first. However, Deep holds a different view. He reckons the surface could become better for batting under lights and feels bowling first is the way to go.

Debut alert - Prince Yadav has been handed his maiden ODI cap by Shreyas Iyer in the Indian huddle. The right-arm quick impressed with 16 wickets in 14 games for the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2026. With Lucknow being his home ground during the IPL, that familiarity with the conditions could help ease some of the nerves that naturally come when making an international debut.

Clear skies today - Looking ahead to today's blockbuster, the dark clouds are gone, and the radar is crystal clear. The traditional Ekana surface could aid spin bowling, meaning we might see the magician Kuldeep Yadav drafted into the Indian lineup. Can the tourists script history with their maiden ODI win against India to force a decider, or will the hosts prove to be too clinical once again? Don't go anywhere, the toss is coming up next!

Eyes on improvement - India will aim to plug a few holes, particularly by tightening up their middle-overs bowling to prevent explosive counter-attacks. With the pitch expected to favour turn, the Indian batters need to read Rashid Khan with extreme caution, while their own bowling unit looks to ruthlessly suffocate the Afghan scoring rate right from the powerplay.

Afghanistan's batting woes - For Afghanistan, the execution today needs to be much sharper. They cannot rely solely on another solo show from Rahmanullah Gurbaz. The rest of the top order must step up to build stable partnerships. More importantly, on this turning Ekana track, their spin attack needs to hunt for early wickets and put the dynamic Indian batting lineup under sustained pressure.

Hello and welcome to Lucknow! A very warm welcome to cricket fans around the globe. We are at the beautiful Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow for the crucial second ODI. The hosts hold a 1-0 lead after a dominant seven-wicket victory in a rain-curtailed shootout up north in Dharamsala. Today, India will look to wrap up the three-match series with a game to spare, while Afghanistan will fight to keep the series alive.

... MATCH DAY ...

A series on the line - The Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow carries complicated memories for Afghanistan. Six years ago, this city doubled as their 'home' away from home, a hopeful experiment that ended in a 0-3 ODI whitewash against the West Indies. They return not as guests seeking comfort, but as a team chasing survival. After a seven-wicket defeat in Dharamsala, the visitors find themselves 1-0 down in the three-match series with no room for error. India, by contrast, are settled. Their captain is in ominous form, their debutants have announced themselves, and their bowling attack looks increasingly settled with an eye on the 2027 World Cup. Leading from the front - India's captaincy transition has been seamless. Shubman Gill has not only taken over the leadership reins from Rohit Sharma across formats but has also elevated his batting to another level. His unbeaten 84 in the series opener was a masterclass in chase management, compact, calculated, and entirely in control. With vice-captain Shreyas Iyer expected to play a pivotal role at No. 4, and Ishan Kishan's form, India's top order has the firepower to post or chase down any total. Debutants shine - The biggest takeaways from the first ODI, however, were the debutants. Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey walked onto the international stage and delivered immediately. Brar, the left-arm pacer, picked up 3 for 27, using his height and angle to trouble Afghanistan's batters. Dubey, the all-rounder, complemented him with 3 for 47, showcasing control and variety. Their performances solved two problems at once, India's search for left-arm seam variety and a spin-bowling all-rounder who can bat in the lower order. New combinations settling in - In the absence of rested bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, the pace attack has been led ably by Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna. Washington Sundar's role remains a question mark, as he was given just one over in the last game. Searching for rhythm - India's batting lineup looks deep and explosive, with KL Rahul's stability and finishing ability providing the perfect cushion in the middle order. The one concern, however, remains Rohit Sharma's form. The veteran opener, who continues to have his sights set on the 2027 ODI World Cup, has managed just one half-century in his last five ODI innings. With two games against Afghanistan still to come, he has a valuable opportunity to rediscover his rhythm and remind everyone why he remains one of the most dangerous batters in the format. A lone century - For Afghanistan, the first ODI was a tale of two halves. Rahmanullah Gurbaz played an innings of rare brilliance, 102 off 51 balls, with eight fours and eight sixes, an exhibition of clean, fearless hitting. His century was the only reason Afghanistan reached 194; without it, the total would have been far lower and the contest even more one-sided. Gurbaz remains the most dangerous batter in the side, capable of taking the game away from any bowling attack in the first ten overs. The support cast need to deliver - Alongside the reliable Hashmatullah Shahidi, Ibrahim Zadran is another key batter to watch. In his last six matches, he has scored 413 runs at an impressive average of 68.84, making him Afghanistan's one of the most reliable ODI batter. Sediqullah Atal has also impressed recently, showing good potential, and has emerged as a dependable middle-order option. The familiarity with Lucknow's conditions, however, could work in Afghanistan's favour. They have played here before, and the hot and humid weather is something their players are accustomed to. Spin still threatens - On the bowling front, Rashid Khan remains Afghanistan's primary threat. In his last eight ODI matches, he has taken 16 wickets, numbers that underline his ability to control the middle overs and break partnerships. His battle with Gill and Iyer will be one of the defining match-ups of the series. Mohammad Nabi brings experience and control, while Azmatullah Omarzai has emerged as a genuine all-round option, capable of contributing with both bat and ball. Pitch aids all - The Ekana Stadium in Lucknow has traditionally offered a balanced surface, true bounce early, some assistance for seamers with the new ball, and enough grip for spinners as the innings progresses. Dew could be a factor in the evening, making it harder for spinners to grip the ball, a significant consideration for Afghanistan, whose attack revolves around their slow bowlers. The weather is expected to be hot and humid, particularly in the first half of the game, which could test the fitness and concentration of both sides. India's unbeaten run - The head-to-head between these two sides is remarkably one-sided. India have never lost to Afghanistan in any format across 16 international matches. In ODIs specifically, India have won four of the five meetings, with one tied encounter from the 2018 Asia Cup serving as the only time Afghanistan avoided defeat. But those numbers, as dominant as they are, belong to a different era. This is the first bilateral series, and Afghanistan are a far more accomplished side than the one that made its World Cup debut in 2019. Form (Last 5 completed ODIs, recent first) - IND - WLLWW | AFG - LWWWW. Final thoughts - The first ODI showed exactly why this series should not be taken lightly. India may have secured the early advantage, but Afghanistan once again demonstrated that they have the talent and belief to challenge the world's best on any given day. For the hosts, it is a chance to build momentum and wrap up the series with a game to spare. For Afghanistan, it is an opportunity to respond, level the contest and prove that their recent rise is built on substance rather than reputation. With plenty of quality on both sides and no shortage of motivation, another intriguing battle awaits.
