Signing off - Shubman Gill receives the trophy and later joins his teammates. It is Gill's first ODI series win as India's captain. Attention now turns to a busy few months ahead. Before the much-anticipated tour of England, India will make a brief stop in Ireland for a two-match T20I series, with the first game scheduled for June 26. As for Afghanistan, they go into a break before returning to action in August. Their next assignment is a five-match ODI series in Ireland, which gets underway on August 5. For now, you can switch tabs and follow the action from the second Test between England and New Zealand, or tune in to the Women's T20 World Cup action. Until next time, it's goodbye from us. Cheers!

PLAYER OF THE SERIES - India's skipper, Shubman Gill takes home the award for scoring 238 runs in 2 innings. Gill credits Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna for setting the tone with an outstanding opening spell. Given the conditions, he had considered extending their spells by an over, but both bowlers were exhausted. Shubman is pleased that his side ticked most of the boxes they had identified before the series, particularly maintaining their intensity through the middle overs. Looking ahead to the England tour, he feels the conditions there will offer useful preparation for what the team could encounter in South Africa, even if they are not exactly the same.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Prasidh Krishna wins the award for a stellar showing with the ball. The pacer finished with outstanding figures of 5/23 in 8.2 overs, including two maidens, to set up India's comfortable win. Krishna says that the body feels good, and he's really happy for the team as well. Adds that they are trying to hit the lengths as a bowling unit, and it's the homework that's helping him hit his mark. Further mentions that when you have good bowlers alongside, you push each other to do better and learn plenty of things. On the five-wicket haul, he says that he did think about it when he was off the field, but he'd be happier with the win rather than a five-wicket haul.

The captain of Afghanistan - Hashmatullah Shahidi says the loss of early wickets in the first 10 overs put them under pressure from the outset. Adds that while they recovered well, they did not finish strongly with the bat, and the loss of wickets in quick succession at the end left them short of the total they were aiming for. On a personal note, Shahidi says it feels good to score a maiden ODI ton and hopes that he can continue to improve in the future. He praises the talent within the Afghanistan squad but acknowledges that beating India in their own conditions is always a difficult task.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Let's hear from the centurion - Yashasvi Jaiswal says that he enjoyed the innings and just wanted to kick on after a fast start in the Powerplay. On his opportunities so far in this format, he says that he tries to control the controllables and works hard, and there's support from the coaching staff as well. On a positive start to his ODI career, he says that he's just trying to convert his starts into big scores and is very determined to keep his focus and make things count. On batting with Rohit Sharma, he says that he continues to ask Rohit about what to do and mentions that even today, when he was playing a few dot balls, Rohit helped him out.

A recovery undone - It was a topsy-turvy innings from Afghanistan after opting to bat first. They were reduced to 36/4 early on, with Prasidh Krishna doing all the damage, before Hashmatullah Shahidi led the rescue act. With Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi for company, the skipper helped drag his side back into the contest. At 198/5, the visitors would have fancied their chances of pushing well beyond 250, but a self-inflicted collapse saw those hopes evaporate, and they were bowled out for 218. Shahidi battled through cramps to bring up a gritty maiden ODI century, while for India, Prasidh Krishna was the standout performer with a maiden ODI five-wicket haul.

A chase in cruise control - Afghanistan sprayed it around with the ball and were untidy in the field as well, and the Indian opening pair made them merry. The back of the chase was broken in the first Powerplay itself. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma looked largely untroubled, rotating strike with ease and punishing anything loose as the home side steadily marched towards the target. Jaiswal went all the way to his second ODI hundred and, alongside Shreyas Iyer, saw the chase through.

Job done - A clinical chase from the Men in Blue as they completed a dominant 3-0 clean sweep over Afghanistan. It was a professional effort from Shubman Gill and his men across all three games, with India proving superior in every department. With white-ball cricket being Afghanistan's stronger suit compared to the Test arena, where they were outplayed, there was an expectation that they would push India much harder in this series, but it did not pan out that way.

28.46

SIX! Yashasvi Jaiswal ends proceedings in style, and India win by 9 wickets, sweeping the series 3-0 as well. A floater from Nabi, on the pads, Jaiswal dances down the pitch, doesn't quite get to the pitch of the ball but goes through with the slog and gets it over deep mid-wicket for a six.

28.34

FOUR! Sloppy fielding, and the scores are now level. On a nagging length, darted into middle and leg, Jaiswal gets low and brings out the broom. Plays it to short fine leg, where the fielder lets it through for a boundary.

28.20

Flatter one, sliding on with the arm, Jaiswal rocks back and cuts it straight to point.

28.16

SIX! What a way to bring up your 2nd ODI HUNDRED! Yashasvi Jaiswal gets to the milestone in style and leaps up in the air before taking off his helmet and soaking in all of the deserved applause. Tossed up, wide outside off, Jaiswal dances down the pitch and wallops it away over extra cover and all the way for a six.

SIX! BANG! Short-pitched delivery again, around chest height, Iyer goes back and across and nails the pull deep over the mid-wicket fence for another biggie. Just 11 more needed for the win now for India.

27.50

Not Out! A well-directed short ball, dug in over leg and around the front shoulder. Shreyas Iyer looks to pull but misses. Half an appeal for caught behind, Rahmanullah Gurbaz seems certain, but doesn't get much support from the bowler. The umpire turns it down, but Gurbaz convinces the skipper to go for the review. The replays roll in, and UltraEdge shows that the ball missed the bat and the gloves.

27.42

A skiddy short ball over middle, Iyer gets rushed on the pull and mistimes it over wide mid on for a couple of runs.

27.36

SIX! Shreyas Iyer decides to chance his arm now as well. Pitched-up delivery, angling across off, Iyer steps across and smacks it straight down the ground for a biggie. 200 up now for India.

27.21

Good length on the pads, tucked away in front of square on the leg side for a single.

27.14

FOUR! That's exquisite! Too full, angled into middle and leg, Yashasvi Jaiswal drills it dead straight, just past the stumps at the other end and the ball races away to the fence. Jaiswal is into the 90s now.

In the air...but it falls short. Bowled on a length, on off. Jaiswal throws his hands at the ball. Slices it in the air off the outer half towards deep cover. Ziaur Rahman does not pick it up early as he runs around initially before charging in towards the ball. Rahman slides in front, but the ball gets to him on the bounce. Single taken.

25.54

FOUR! Cheeky and effective! At the sticks, on a good length, on middle. Jaiswal walks across for the scoop with fine leg inside the circle. Jaiswal ends up playing it finer than he would have liked, but manages to evade Rahmanullah Gurbaz and it races away.

25.52wd

Two wides! Down leg, on a back of a length. Iyer gets inside the line and swings across but fails to lay any bat on it. Rahmanullah Gurbaz moves to his left but cannot gather it cleanly. The ball deflects away off his gloves and the batters cross.

25.40

Pushes the length up, on off. Iyer leans into the drive and the ball pings off his blade. The cover fielder gets low and makes a sharp stop.

25.30

From around the wicket now, pace taken off, on a good length. Iyer plays it on the up to cover.

Commentary

We are back for the run chase! The umpires are back out in the middle and so are the players of Afghanistan. It will be the duo of Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal to open the innings for India, who will start at 5/0, given the five penalty runs conceded by Hashmatullah Shahidi for running onto the pitch time and again. Azmatullah Omarzai to start proceedings with the ball. Let's play...

... The Run Chase ...

A clean sweep incoming? Afghanistan have huffed and puffed their way to a score of 218 runs, but they will have mixed feelings about that score. When they were 36/4, they would have certainly taken this total, but they got to 141/4 at one stage, with nearly 22 overs remaining and they will feel they should have got to at least 250. India, on the other hand, will look to come out of the blocks quickly and gun the target down without a fuss. But will they? We will find out soon. The run chase is coming up in a bit.

Let's now hear from the man of the moment - Prasidh Krishna says he is really pleased to have bowled well and contributed to the team on such a hot day in Chennai. He mentions that a lot of work has gone into refining his lengths over a long period of time, regardless of the format, and it is nice to see that effort paying off. Adds that Morne Morkel has been constantly in his ear. Admits he was feeling the effects of the heat after five overs in his opening spell, but says that turning up on a day like this and putting in that kind of effort for the team is particularly satisfying.

Shahidi's maiden ton gets upstaged - Azmatullah Omarzai and Hashmatullah Shahidi both got to their fifties but Omarzai was undone by a bumper from Prince Yadav. Shahidi did well to build another steady stand with Mohammad Nabi, but things started to go downhill once Nabi got out. Shahidi started to feel the heat, not just from the conditions but also to go on and score big. A couple of run outs and a few wickets later, Shahidi managed to conjure up a maiden ODI ton, only to fall prey to Prasidh Krishna, who closed out the innings with a maiden ODI five-fer.

Prasidh's opening burst sets the tone - After being asked to bowl first, Prasidh Krishna ran through the Afghan top order as he picked up 4 wickets in his first spell and India had the opposition reeling at 36/4. However, the spinners couldn't make much of an impact in the middle phase, nor could the other pacers after the first 10 overs, and this allowed Afghanistan back in the game. It was then a 100-plus run stand between Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai that got the visitors back in the contest.

Done with the first innings - End of a long and hard-fought first innings under the warm Chennai sun. Conditions were hot and humid and we saw a lot of players struggling with the sultry conditions, but in the end, it will be India who will be very pleased heading into the break.

44.2W

OUT! CAUGHT! Shreyas Iyer makes no mistake, and Afghanistan have been bowled out for 218. A five-wicket haul for Prasidh Krishna, his first in ODI cricket. Off-cutter, bowled into the surface, on middle and leg. Shahidi makes room for himself and goes through with the pull. He does connect well but hits it flat and straight down the throat of deep mid-wicket, where Shreyas Iyer gets on his knees and gobbles it up.

44.11

A yorker, at the base of the off stump. Rahman backs away and digs it out to the right of point for a single.

Hashmatullah Shahidi is down on the ground. He is wincing in pain right now, and this is not a good sign at all for Afghanistan. He is seen holding his right hip as well and it seems like the cramps are spreading out all throughout his body. The forearm seems to be completely gone and the physio is really trying to provide relief to Shahidi. He is finally up on his feet and will continue the fight.

Flighted delivery, full and on off. This is eased back to the bowler.

43.44

FOUR! Neatly done, and that brings up a maiden ODI ton for Hashmatullah Shahidi. Drops it short, does Sundar, on off. Shahidi rocks back and cuts it late to thread the gap between backward point and short third for a boundary. A moment to savour for the Afghanistan skipper. It has not been easy batting in this Chennai heat, and despite being hampered by cramps, Shahidi has dug deep and battled on for his side.

43.30

Fired in, on a length, on middle. Hashmatullah Shahidi lunges for the block.

43.22

Good running! Drifting onto the pads, on a length. Shahidi clips it in front of deep square leg and calls for two straight away. By the time Yashasvi Jaiswal can get in off the ropes and get rid of the ball, Shahidi comes back for the second run. The Afghan skipper moves to 98, this is now his highest ODI score.

Half a shout for caught behind, but turned down. Not much conviction in the appeal and India do not take the review. Slower, short ball, on off. Shahidi is way too early into the pull and fails to connect.

42.14

OUT! FAREED IS RUN OUT! That's really poor running between the wickets, never a single there, and why would Hashmatullah Shahidi even want to give the strike to a tailender? Washington Sundar bowls it full and flat outside off, Shahidi blocks it to the right of cover and sets off for the single yet again. Fareed Ahmad responds and races to the danger end. Shubman Gill picks up the ball cleanly and fires in a throw at the top of the stumps. Ishan Kishan collects it and whips off the bails in a flash, with Fareed well short of his crease. Also, Ziaur Rahman is the last batter in for Afghanistan.

Out goes AM Ghazanfar and in walks Fareed Ahmad. We now have the official clarification regarding the confusion at the end of the previous over. Hashmatullah Shahidi did take a single, but in doing so, he ran through the danger area. He had already been warned by the umpires earlier in the innings, and with this being a repeat offence, the single was disallowed, and Afghanistan have also been docked five runs. That explains why Rashid Khan was on strike at the start of the over.

Shubman Gill at mid-wicket moves to his left and fires in a throw towards the keeper. AM Ghazanfar dives in as Ishan Kishan takes off the bails, and replays show that the batter is short of his crease.

DRINKS BREAK! India are cruising towards the target. Afghanistan have looked a little flat in the field, and they certainly did not help their cause with the way they started with the ball and some untidy moments in the field. While the spinners have managed to string together a few quiet overs, they have not been able to create any real chances or build sustained pressure on the Indian opening pair. Chris Gaffaney is having a word with Rahmat Shah, who is the stand-in captain at the moment, with Hashmatullah Shahidi off the field. There seems to be a bit of explaining going on, although it is not entirely clear what the discussion is about. Anyway, back to the action.

Shahidi rocks back and cuts it late to thread the gap between backward point and short third for a boundary. A moment to savour for the Afghanistan skipper.

Also, the umpires are now pushing Hashmatullah Shahidi a bit as he's been holding up play after every over. Oh, saved by the height, probably. Good length on off, darts back in sharply off the deck. Ibrahim Zadran looks to play with a straight bat but the ball beats the inside edge and hits him on the pads. Not much of an appeal for LBW.

4.50

Fuller this time, angling in from around off. Zadran looks to drive but it isn't quite full enough and he gets an inside edge onto the pads.

4.44

FOUR! Zadran gets the freebie away. Short of a length, around chest height, Zadran hangs back and short-arm jabs the pull over mid-wicket and picks up another boundary.

4.45nb

FOUR! Nicely put away by Zadran. On the pads, angling down leg, Ibrahim Zadran tucks it down to fine leg for a boundary. The siren's gone off as well, which means Gurnoor Brar has overstepped. It will be a No Ball and Free Hit to follow...

The umpires look concerned and have immediately called for the physio. Ibrahim Zadran will undergo a concussion check. Zadran is ready to resume.

4.30

Oh, that's rattled Zadran a bit. Banged in short at 144.3 kph and right at the batter. Ibrahim Zadran looks to take on the pull but gets rushed and gets hit flush on the grill of the helmet.

4.20

On a three-quarter length, looking to slide one through on middle. Zadran gets forward and punches it firmly to mid on.

4.11

Dug in a bit short and at the batter, Shah drops it into the on side with soft hands and pinches a single.

Back of a length and around off, Zadran stands tall and punches it down to cover.

BEAUTY! Slightly pitched up, in the channel and forcing the batter to come forward. The ball isn't quite full and Zadran looks to defend but the ball zips past the outside edge.

3.31lb

Bowled from wider on the crease and angled well into the pads. Shah fails to get any bat on it and the ball thuds on the pads before rolling towards square leg. Shah gets a leg bye.

Nice and full now, around off, Zadran gets forward and defends it back to the bowler.

That's a peach! Prasidh Krishna hammers the good length on off and gets the ball to just nip away with extra bounce and good carry. Rahmat Shah looks to block, but the ball whizzes past the blade.

1.54lb

FOUR LEG BYES! Krishna errs in line and gives away a few extra runs. Length again, but drifted into the pads. Shah misses the tuck and the ball goes off the pads, rolling away into the fine leg fence.

1.40

Good length, well wide outside off, this one carries through a bit sluggishly and Shah makes another leave.

1.30

Pitched full, but hitting the deck hard and getting the ball to swing away from off. Shah lets it through to the keeper.

1.20

Good shape away, but too wide to make the batter play at it. Fullish length, outside off and swinging further away, Rahmat Shah leaves it alone.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz is unhappy with himself as he flings his helmet onto the floor on his way to the dressing room. Rahmat Shah is in early.

1.1W

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! This one carried through almost in slow motion. Perfect delivery to start with from Prasidh Krishna as he lands it a tad fuller and in the channel outside off. Krishna gets the ball to deviate away from the surface, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz is sucked into playing the drive. Gurbaz pushes at it half-heartedly and gets the outside edge. Rohit Sharma at first slip takes a simple catch just to his right. Afghanistan are 5/1 already.

Prince Yadav took the other new ball in the previous game, but today, it will be Prasidh Krishna.

0.50

Extra bounce again! Just short of a good length and outside off, this one carries through at nearly chest height, and Gurbaz leaves it alone.

0.44

FOUR! Oh, just past the keeper, but that's down the wrong line from Brar. Good length, angling down leg, Gurbaz gets inside the line to pick it leg side but gets it more off the glove and to the keeper's left for a boundary. Gurbaz and Afghanistan are underway.

0.30

Pitched much fuller this time, attacking the off stump, Rahmanullah Gurbaz lets the ball come on and defends it under the eyes.

Two balls into the game and already a change of bat for Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

0.20

Oh, some movement now as well. Hard length, outside off and shapes away with good carry again. Gurbaz strides across to drive but is beaten well past the outside edge.

0.10

Oh, a steepler to begin with! Gurnoor Brar hammers the shortish length at 140.1 kph, and gets the ball to shoot off the deck with good carry on it as well. Rahmanullah Gurbaz leans back and lets it through.

We are all set to get going in Chennai. It is blisteringly hot out there, which perhaps explains the modest turnout at the moment. Expect more spectators to trickle in later in the day. Shubman Gill leads his men out onto the field. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran are the two openers for Afghanistan. Gurnoor Brar will kickstart proceedings with the new ball. Gurbaz will take strike. Two slips await. The countdown is done, and away we go...

India (Playing XI) - Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (C), Ishan Kishan (WK), Shreyas Iyer, Nitish Kumar Reddy (In for KL Rahul), Washington Sundar, Harsh Dubey (In for Kuldeep Yadav), Gurnoor Brar, Prasidh Krishna (In for Arshdeep Singh), and Prince Yadav.

Afghanistan (Playing XI) - Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK), Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi (C), Darwish Rasooli, Mohammad Nabi (In for Sediqullah Atal), Azmatullah Omarzai (In for Nangeyalia Kharote), Rashid Khan, AM Ghazanfar, Ziaur Rahman (In for Mohammad Saleem), and Fareed Ahmad (In for Bilal Sami).

The Indian skipper - Shubman Gill says that the wicket looks good and they would have batted first as well, as conditions are once again going to be hot and humid. Mentions that they are looking to improve in certain areas, and chasing big scores is one of the boxes they want to tick off. He ends by informing that they have made three changes with the likes of Harsh Dubey, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Prasidh Krishna coming back in.

The captain of Afghanistan - Hashmatullah Shahidi says it is always hot at this time of year in India, but believes the wicket looks very good for batting. He describes the surface as hard and dry and hopes that they can get off to a strong start. Reflecting on the series so far, Shahidi admits his side has fallen short in a few areas and has not played the brand of cricket they are capable of. He stresses the importance of building partnerships with the bat and being more disciplined with the ball. Despite the results, he believes there have been plenty of learnings for the team. Asked about the team changes, Shahidi says there are four in total and refers to the names written on his palm before confirming that Mohammad Nabi, Azmatullah Omarzai, Ziaur Rahman and Fareed Ahmad have been brought into the XI.

TOSS - Toss time in Chennai, and both captains are out in the middle. Shubman Gill will spin the coin, whereas Hashmatullah Shahidi will call. He does so correctly, and Afghanistan will BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Deep Dasgupta reports that it is a very hot day in Chennai, with a breeze providing some welcome relief. Considering the heat, Michael Clarke feels both captains will be keen to bat first and put runs on the board. Clarke observes that the surface has a nice covering of grass, but the surface feels dry underneath. Mentions that traditionally, the surfaces here have been good for batting. Deep opines that the even covering of grass should help hold the surface together throughout the game. He agrees with Clarke's assessment that this looks like a very good batting wicket.

Back to the drawing board - After putting up a decent fight in the first ODI, Afghanistan crumbled with the ball in the 2nd ODI and even after a very good start with the bat, the pressure of chasing 403 simply got to them and they ended up losing the game by 170 runs. They will be eager to tweak the bowling and look to contain the Indian batters a bit more through the middle phase, but it will be a big challenge against a team that's riding high on confidence. Righto, will we see some sort of a turnaround and probably an upset today? Or will India simply carry on their merry way? Only time will tell. There's also a forecast of rain in the afternoon, which might delay things a bit, but the weather is expected to clear after that, so we should get a full game in. Stay tuned for the toss and team news.

Expect some changes - With India having already sealed the three-match series 2-0, they will look to test their bench strength, and someone like Harshit Rana, who is coming back from injury, could get a go in this game. Overall, the hosts have immaculate depth in all areas of the game and they will be eager to clean sweep the series.

One final bout - Hello, and welcome to our coverage of the 3rd ODI between India and Afghanistan, set to be played at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This is the final match of Afghanistan's tour to India, and so far the hosts have bossed proceedings and will be eyeing up a clean sweep. Afghanistan, on the other hand, will be hoping to step up after how they got demolished in the 2nd ODI and look to end the tour with a 'W' against their name.

... MATCH DAY ...

The Chennai assignment - From Chandigarh to the Dhauladhar up north, and then rolling through the plains of Lucknow, this Afghanistan tour of India is all set to conclude down south in the Detroit of India. The series lays down its final tent at the MA Chidambaram Stadium for the third and final ODI. India have clinched the series handsomely and are eyeing a clean sweep. Afghanistan, still trying to firm their footing in the format and proving their credentials against the ‘big boys’, will be aiming to salvage pride and bow out with a zillion learnings. A fort that rarely falls - Now here is a little something worth chewing on. This is India's first home ODI series since the New Zealand nightmare back in January. That series stung. It broke records, but more than that, it put a dent in something India hold very, very dear, which is their stranglehold on home soil. Because look, in 25 home bilateral series since 2013, India have lost just four of those. The Kiwis managed it once earlier this year. The Aussies pulled it off twice, in 2019 and 2023. The Proteas did it once as well, in 2015. That is the company you need to be in to beat India at home. Afghanistan are not at that level yet, and the series scoreline reflects that. India have been commanding, handing the visitors one of their biggest ODI defeats. But Afghanistan arrived here in fine form, having won five consecutive ODI series before this one, including defeating the heavyweights South Africa in 2024. So they are definitely a side to beat on their given day. This tour, however, has simply been their toughest examination in the format yet. A real trial by fire. But they would hope that they bow out with a collective performance and avoid a whitewash. Firing on all cylinders - That’s Indian batting and bowling units for you. Batting-wise, they have just been simply ruthless. They smashed 402 runs in the second ODI, thanks to twin-centurions, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan. Both these blokes are having a stellar run in 2026. Of course, they scored the bulk of runs in the IPL, but since the last ODI World Cup, Gill has been India’s third-best run getter, after Rohit and Kohli, whereas Kishan, having played just two ODIs in this span and coming back after a prolonged absence, has an average of 79.5. But here is where India will have a small word with themselves. Despite those mammoth contributions at the top, the middle order has not quite fired in this series. KL Rahul has looked decent enough, but Shreyas Iyer, who is very much a fixture in this ODI setup now, has not had the returns to match that status. In 2026, Iyer averages just 19.6, with 98 runs in five ODI innings. For a batter of his calibre, that is a number he will want to fix, and Chennai is as good a place as any to start. The return of Rana - Into an already ruthless bowling lineup with a commendable depth of personnel comes Harshit Rana, added to India's squad for the series finale in Chennai. A knee injury ruled him out of the T20 World Cup earlier this year, also missing the entire IPL along the way. After undergoing surgery and completing his rehab at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, Rana has linked up with the squad in Chennai, providing the team management with an additional high-pace weapon to partner alongside Arshdeep Singh, who led the pace attack in the second match, with a clinical three-wicket haul. And then there are the two youngsters who have made this series their own. Gurnoor Brar has been outstanding, picking up three wickets in both Dharamsala and Lucknow, bowling with excellent control and extracting steep bounce that his tall frame generates almost naturally. Prince Yadav, on his maiden national call-up after a strong IPL 2026 campaign, has been equally eye-catching with his raw pace and hard-length bowling in the second ODI. What's beyond Gurbaz? Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been Afghanistan's brightest spark in this series. A hundred in the first game, a brisk 41 off 33 in the second. He has led from the front every time. Since the last ODI World Cup, he has been Afghanistan’s leading run getter, with four hundreds and three fifties. The challenge now is to build a more collective batting effort around him. Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah have shown decent touches in this series, and young Sediqullah Atal is soaking in every experience that comes his way. The ingredients are there. It simply comes down to doing it more consistently, and a series like this will only help them massively. The form of captain Hashmatullah Shahidi has been under the scanner of late, though. Averaging 26.25 since the last global tournament, he has struggled for both consistency and fluency in the middle order. And with just 31 runs this series, a good stint in Chennai would go a long way, both for his own confidence and for what Afghanistan need from their skipper in the middle overs. A big challenge for the young bowling attack - Defensively, Afghanistan's greatest strength lies in their spin-bowling department. Rashid Khan remains the jewel in the crown, having claimed three-for in Lucknow, and alongside him, the emergence of Nangeyalia Kharote has added a fresh and exciting dimension to their attack. Young off-spinner AM Ghazanfar completes what is a genuinely threatening spin trio, one that will fancy their chances of putting the Indian middle order under some pressure. With the pace ball, options are a little thinner after an injury to Omarzai. 22-year-old Bilal Sami had a tough outing in Lucknow, going for 90 runs in his spell of just 8.5 overs, and will be looking to make amends. Mohammad Saleem, another emerging young pacer, who impressed in the Tests on this very tour, offers a more promising case and will be hoping to carry that form into the white-ball arena. Team form (Last 5 completed ODIs, recent first) - IND - WWLLW | AFG - LLWWW. What to expect? Chepauk and spin. The two have gone hand in hand for as long as anyone can remember. But the numbers tell a slightly different story these days. Since the start of 2023, pacers have actually outbowled the spinners at this ground in ODIs, picking up 51 wickets to spinners' 36 across six matches, including the 2023 ODI World Cup. The surface has changed its character, and the bowlers who have adapted have reaped the rewards. That said, writing off spin at Chepauk would be a brave call. It is still very much in the game and the teams would closely read the conditions before. So expect a gripping contest at Chepauk, where ODI returns after almost three years.
