Commentary

Right then, that's all from this game, where Afghanistan registered a statement win and are sitting pretty at the top of the Group C standings. As far as New Zealand are concerned, their NRR has taken a big hit early in the tournament and will now face the West Indies up next in a crucial encounter. Meanwhile, over in Dallas, two Asian rivals, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, are currently locking horns. It is shaping up to be yet another entertaining game. You can switch tabs and enjoy the coverage of that game. Cheers!

Rashid Khan, the skipper of Afghanistan says it is one of the greatest performances from them in T20 against a world-class team. Adds the openers started well, they didn't throw the wicket away and that was the time they did well to take the game deep. Shares at the halfway mark, they had set batters in so the talk was to play the natural, positive game and avoid more dot balls in the next 10 overs. Tells with the bowling unit they have, a par score is enough as all the bowlers used their skill to put pressure on the opposition. Reckons the effort was there right from the start, they way Gurbaz and Zadran opened, it gave them a lot of energy. Appreciates the way Farooqi bowled, but mentions there is room for improvement.

The captain of New Zealand, Kane Williamson starts by congratulating Afghanistan for the win. Adds that the opposition outplayed them in all facets of the game. Feels that their batters played beautifully on a tricky surface. States that they will review this loss and need to move on quickly as games continue to come thick and fast in the tournament. Tells that the most frustrating part was their fielding in the first 10 overs where they could not convert their chances. Further says that facing West Indies in the next game is a big challenge and his side knows that they can play better than this.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant knock of 80 runs from 56 balls. He says they have been waiting for this victory for the last three years, they had the belief right from the start of the tournament. Tells he was frustrated with the way he started with the bat, the wicket was not easy but Ibrahim Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai played well and eventually, the bowlers did the job. Mentions they were hoping for a score around 130-140. Shares the conversation is good between him and Zadran which helps them a lot. Reckons the management always says to be active and encourage the bowlers and keep high energy in the field.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, after being inserted into bat, Afghanistan were off to a brisk start. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran got early boundaries away and put New Zealand under pressure. The Kiwis, showing signs of rustiness from not having played together for some time, were erratic in the field and failed to capitalise on their opportunities. The Afghan opening pair slowed up a bit after the Powerplay before putting the foot on the pedal from the halfway mark. After Azmatullah Omarzai fell following a quickfire knock, Gurbaz struggled to find support from the other end and eventually got out for 80. As a result, Afghanistan had to be content with 159 on the board. Mitchell Santner was New Zealand's most economical bowler but went wicketless. While Matt Henry was expensive, Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson stepped up in the pace department.

As for New Zealand, they never truly seemed up for the challenge, which is uncharacteristic for the Kiwis. Whether with the ball, in the field, or with the bat, their struggles due to the lack of game time as a unit were evident. In New Zealand's pursuit of 160 runs, they were rocked early, losing both openers inside the first three overs. Daryl Mitchell and Kane Williamson too looked out of sorts and could not have any sort of an impact. It went from bad to worse for the Kiwis as wickets kept tumbling as their batters failed Afghanistan's trial by spin. In the blink of an eye, New Zealand were shut out for just 75, the fourth lowest total in their T20I history.

HISTORY CREATED IN GUYANA! Afghanistan have absolutely outplayed and outclassed the Kiwis to hand them a humbling defeat, and by doing so, they have made it two wins out of two in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, 2024. While not necessarily an upset given Afghanistan's rise, this is certainly a night to savour for the Asian side. They not only defeated New Zealand for the first time in T20Is but did so emphatically. Despite the century-opening stand, Afghanistan couldn't rest easy with their total and had to be precise with the ball. Fazalhaq Farooqi set the tone by taking three wickets in his opening spell, continuing his form from the game against Uganda. Rashid Khan struck with the first ball of the night and, along with Mohammad Nabi, spun a web around the Kiwi batters. The spin twins took the game by the scruff of the neck and never allowed the opposition to breathe easy, The man who started it all, Farooqi completed the formalities to end with four wickets on the night. Rashid Khan also had four wickets to his name while Mohammad Nabi took 2 scalps.

Rashid gives the ball air and bowls it on a nagging length, on off, Lockie Ferguson prods forward to smother the spin but it comes off the upper half of the bat and it lobs tamely back towards the bowler. Rashid Khan runs a few steps forward and takes the simplest of catches.

Commentary

We are back. The players are out in the middle. The hero from Afghanistan's last match, Fazalhaq Farooqi to bowl first. Finn Allen and Devon Conway to open.

...THE CHASE...

Right then! This is just above-par score in this conditions. The dew has started to kick in a bit! Afghanistan think they have enough and it does look enough but New Zealand are coming with a long tail here. A good powerplay could put New Zealand on the front foot. A fascinating second half coming up. Stay tuned.

Afghanistan would have loved another 10-15 runs here but this is a formidable score on a pitch which is not easy to bat on. Afghanistan were asked to bat first and the lady luck was with the Asian team as their openers made most of the chances given and builded a 103-run stand. Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz targeted a couple of bowlers and scored at a good rate but at multiple times where Afghanistan went a few overs without a boundary and if you see the overall score, and the runs scored apart from top three, there is not much. It was hard for batters to come in and hammer it away.

Afghanistan's man of the moment, Rahmanullah Gurbaz is in for a chat. He says that considering the bowling they have, this is a good total and he is happy with it. Shares that it was not easy at the start against the spinners. Adds that their plan was to play safely against Santner and charge other bowlers. Tells that the pitch is not easy and hopes that his side can bowl and field well.

A tale of two halves really for the Kiwis. They will be happy with how they ended with the ball but boy, that was some school-match stuff from New Zealand. There was so much action in the powerplay, firstly luck wasn't on their side but on the contrasting side, they didn't take their chances. A dropped catch, a run out chance, an LBW decision overturned, then Lockie Ferguson trapped Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the 8th over but they didn't take the review as they thought there was an edge, close to the halfway mark Kane Williamson dropped Rahmanullah Gurbaz again. It was all going downhill for them but somehow New Zealand kept Afghanistan at bay! They made it hard for Afghanistan to score runs in the second half and that helped New Zealand to stay in the game but still, we feel the momentum is with the Afghan side.

Wow! How rare is this? Just 3 runs off the final over in a T20 game. Sensational stuff from Trent Boult. This is full and angling into the left-hander from over the wicket, Najibullah Zadran looks to play at it but gets an inside edge that goes down to deep fine leg. Just a single off it then. Afghanistan finish with 159 on the board!

19.5W

OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! It has been all New Zealand in this last over! Second wicket of the night for Boult! Takes pace off and bangs it into the deck, over middle, Gulbadin Naib takes the short ball on but fails to get the power and distance to clear the man in the deep. Holes out to Glenn Phillips at deep mid-wicket who takes an easy catch.

19.41

Dishes it out on a fullish length, on middle and leg, Karim Janat whips but gets an inside edge onto the boot and the batters cross as the ball rolls away on the off side.

19.31lb

Leg bye! Full and straight from Boult from over the wicket, Gulbadin Naib clears his front leg to swipe across the line but misses as the ball hits him on the front pad before going on to hit the back leg. The batters cross as the ball rolls on the off side. New Zealand take the review but the Ball Tracking shows the impact to be outside leg.

New Zealand have taken a review for LBW. That is clearly pitching outside leg. Not out it is.

Gulbadin Naib comes in next.

19.2W

OUT! CASTLED! Cracking yorker and it had to take something special to get rid of Gurbaz. End of a special knock from the Afghan opener. Trent Boult executes the yorker an the base of the off stump, Rahmanullah Gurbaz plays inside the line of the ball and pays the price as the ball zips through to crash into the off stump.

19.1W

OUT! RUN OUT! Rahmanullah Gurbaz needs the strike and Rashid Khan has to sacrifice! Digs it out on a fullish length, angling away, on off, Rashid Khan jams his bat down but fials to dig it out. Rahmanullah Gurbaz sets off but Rashid is late to react. Devon Conway releases the throw back to Boult who does the rest by taking the bails off at the bowling end.

Trent Boult to bowl the final over.

SIX! Thumped down the ground! A maximum to the start the over and a maximum to end it too from Gurbaz. Width on offer on off and it is a slot-ball, Rahmanullah Gurbaz stays low to make the connection and swings through the line. Smokes it back over the bowler's head for six more. 16 runs off the over.

18.51

Slower and fuller, around off, Rashid Khan whips it along the ground to long on for one.

18.41

At 121.2 kph, on a length, outside off, Rahmanullah Gurbaz drags the shot to deep mid-wicket. A cry of anguish from Gurbaz as he thought he missed out there. Just a single off it then.

Halt! A quick concussion test going on as Rashid Khan gets hit on the helmet. He looks fine and ready to go.

18.31

Oh, dear! That has deflected onto the helmet! Mitchell rolls his fingers over the ball and it is short as well, on middle, Rashid Khan crouches as he goes for the pull but fails to ride the bounce. Gets a top edge that hits him onto the helmet. The batters cross as the ball rolls on the off side.

18.21

More like it from Mitchell! Takes all the pace off and goes short, on off, Rahmanullah Gurbaz mistimes the pull in front of square on the leg side for a single.

18.16

SIX! The gamble to give Daryl Mitchell the penultimate over has not started well for New Zealand. Mitchell serves it right in the slot, on off, Rahmanullah Gurbaz is deep in his crease and he does not miss out. Tonks it over long on for a biggie.

Rashid Khan comes to the middle.

17.4W

OUT! TAKEN! Golden duck for Mohammad Nabi and finally, Lockie Ferguson gets the reward. Ferguson misses his mark again as he dishes out a full toss, on off, Mohammad Nabi was better off playing this one straight but closes the bat face to work it across the line. Gets a leading edge that lobs tamely towards mid off where Kane Williamson does the rest. A soft dismissal.

17.31

Ferguson nails the yorker, outside off, Rahmanullah Gurbaz shuffles across a bit and clips it through square leg for a single.

17.24

FOUR! Up and over and it almost went the distance! Ferguson goes for the change up but slips out a low full toss, on off, Rahmanullah Gurbaz holds his shape and spanks it over mid off for four more runs.

17.14

FOUR! Lockie Ferguson gets greeted back into the attack with a boundary. This is on a hard length, on middle, Rahmanullah Gurbaz shimmies down the track and hits it back over the bowler's head.

We are done with the national anthems and are all set for the action to commence. The two umpires make their way out to the middle and the players of New Zealand join them. It will be the talented pair of Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz to open the innings for Afghanistan. Trent Boult is at the top of his mark and he is raring to go. Let's play...

We are moments away from the first ball in this crucial Group C clash but before that, Kane Williamson and Rashid Khan will lead their respective sides out for the national anthems. It will be Afghanistan's first followed by the national anthem of New Zealand.

PITCH REPORT - Katey Martin is pitchside. She starts by saying that a nice breeze is blowing across the ground. Informs that pitch number 2 will be used for this game, resulting in an 84-metre long straight boundary with 77 metres and 70 metres being the square boundaries. Simon Doull joins her and says that since back-to-back games are going to be played at this venue, the ground staff have left a good amount of grass. Feels that the batters will be tested on this surface which will assist pacers and there will be a bit of spin as well.

Rashid Khan, the skipper of Afghanistan says they are happy to bat first, tells they want to play good cricket and get used to the conditions as quickly as possible. Tells they had a couple of rests day, they recovered after the last match and are ready for this big game. Informs Mujeeb Ur Rahman is out due to an injury and Noor Ahmad is back. Mentions Mujeeb Ur Rahman is struggling with the same injury and it is hard to understand how much time it will take.

The captain of New Zealand, Kane Williamson says that they will bowl first. States that they want to make first use of the fresh surface and feels that there might be some dew around later. Tells that the preparation has been different as compared to other teams but they have trained well over the past week and they are looking forward to this game. Informs that Tim Southee, Rachin Ravindra, Ish Sodhi and James Neesham miss out.

Afghanistan (Playing XI) - Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK), Ibrahim Zadran, Gulbadin Naib, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Najibullah Zadran, Karim Janat, Rashid Khan (C), Noor Ahmad (In for Mujeeb Ur Rahman), Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Finn Allen, Devon Conway (WK), Kane Williamson (C), Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult.

TOSS - New Zealand have won the toss and will BOWL.

It won’t be easy for them though as they are facing a tough assignment against Afghanistan who have adapted to the conditions pretty well. Where teams are struggling to score even 150, the Asian team scored 183 against Uganda, Farooqi was the hero with the ball as he scalped five wickets. Afghanistan, who in the last couple of years would be called underdogs are termed favourites to go all the way this year. That’s the leap they have taken and definitely, this is the contest you don’t want to miss. Stay tuned for toss and other updates.

Hello and welcome to the action in Group C where New Zealand will take on Afghanistan. Mostly all the teams have played a match or two but the Kiwis start their campaign today and that could be a positive sign for them. We have seen how the pitches have been different from what we are used to see and the Kiwis would have got an idea or two of how the conditions are and could get things going right away.

...Match Day...

New Zealand will face Afghanistan in the 14th game of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. New Zealand is a strong contender for the title and will aim to start their campaign strongly. Afghanistan, having defeated Uganda, will look to perform well but has a poor record against New Zealand. Kane Williamson's team, despite not playing warmup games due to key players being involved in the Indian T20 League, and will aim to make a strong start in the tournament and secure their first points. With one of the strongest squads in the competition, they will be determined to meet high expectations. They will rely on an explosive opening partnership of Devon Conway and Finn Allen, followed by experienced players like Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, and Mark Chapman in the middle order. The team's good finishers, Glenn Phillips, James Neesham, and Mitchell Santner, are expected to contribute in the lower order. The Kiwis side possesses a strong bowling attack as well, led by Trent Boult and Tim Southee, with Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi utilizing the pitch conditions. Overall, the team's depth in batting and bowling makes them a formidable opponent in the competition. Rashid Khan's team, on the other hand, has had a strong start in the tournament, with a convincing win over Uganda by 125 runs. Both batsmen and bowlers executed their plans effectively in the previous game. As they face a tougher challenge ahead, Rashid Khan will emphasize the importance of maintaining momentum and securing another victory. Their openers, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran's impressive 154-run partnership had set a solid foundation for the team in their previous game. The middle order, featuring Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, and Gulbadin Naib, is expected to contribute significantly. Power hitters Azmatullah Omarzai and Rashid Khan add depth to the batting lineup. The bowling unit, led by Fazalhaq Farooqi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, aims for early breakthroughs. Rashid Khan plays a key role in the middle overs alongside Naveen-ul-Haq, supported by Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, and Gulbadin Naib in a formidable bowling attack. It remains to be seen if Afghanistan can overcome the odds and secure a victory.
