Commentary

Right then, that’s all we have from what turned out to be a thrilling contest, where New Zealand just got the better of West Indies. With the series now locked at 1-1, the stage is perfectly set for an enticing third encounter. The 3rd T20I will take place at the Saxton Oval in Nelson on 9th November, Sunday, starting at 12.15 am GMT. As always, do join us early for all the build-up and pre-match discussions. Until then, take care and goodbye!

Mitchell Santner, the victorious skipper of New Zealand, says that it got really close but credits the West Indies, as they showed once again that they’re never out of the game, especially with the kind of power they possess. Adds that the conditions got a bit dewy toward the end, and the cutters began to skid on a little. Shares that the bowlers need to keep mixing it up and credits the boys who held their nerve brilliantly. Lauds Mark Chapman, who showed great intent right from the start, taking quick singles, using his feet, and keeping the scoreboard ticking. Once he got in, he just went into overdrive. He’s got that license to keep going, and that’s exactly what he did. Closes by adding that the passage of play completely turned the game in their favour.

Shai Hope, the captain of West Indies, says that they almost got over the line. Adds that Rovman Powell, Romario Shepherd, and Matthew Forde were great, but they needed more runs up front. Adds that with the firepower that they have, they can never be written off in any game. Says that Forde was bowling really well, so they wanted to keep him going with the new ball and bowl four overs on the trot.

Mark Chapman is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his amazing knock and three catches in the field. He says that it’s always nice to connect a few out of the middle. Adds that there were some valuable contributions all around. Mentions that Conway and Robinson did a fantastic job negotiating the new ball, as it looked quite tricky early on. Says that it was about trying to throw a few punches and take the game on a bit more. Tells that with the smaller boundaries, we got to play a more fearless brand of cricket. Closes by adding that he’s glad that it came off in this match.

Presentation Time...

New Zealand will be relieved to have held their nerve and crossed the finish line, but there’s no denying that their death bowling remains a concern after almost letting the game slip away. Jacob Duffy and Kyle Jamieson set the tone early with the new ball, with the former striking first to put the visitors on the back foot. The middle overs belonged to the spin duo of Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner, who shared six wickets between them and kept things tight. However, once their spells ended, the pressure eased, and the Windies batters took full advantage to mount a strong comeback. It all came down to Jamieson in the final over with 16 to defend - despite a shaky start with a couple of boundaries and a No-Ball, he held his composure to see New Zealand through by the narrowest of margins.

Earlier in the game, after being put in to bat, New Zealand piled up a massive total on the board. The openers began steadily, with Tim Robinson taking the initiative with some crisp strokes, but the real show was stolen by Mark Chapman, who blasted a breathtaking 78 off just 28 balls to completely shift the momentum. A rapid cameo from Daryl Mitchell at the end helped them cross the 200-run mark. For West Indies, Roston Chase picked up a couple of wickets while Matthew Forde was the most economical, conceding only 17 runs in his four overs and grabbing one wicket. Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd also chipped in with one apiece, but collectively, they failed to contain the flow of runs in the middle and death overs.

Losing Brandon King early was far from ideal for the West Indies in their chase. Alick Athanaze tried to inject some momentum, while Shai Hope took his time to get going. The pair added 49 runs for the second wicket, but neither could convert their starts, and a middle-order slump saw them crumble from 49/1 to 93/6. Just when it seemed all over, Rovman Powell and Romario Shepherd turned the game on its head with a stunning six-hitting assault, smashing 10 maximums between them to bring the visitors right back into it. Shepherd’s dismissal came at the wrong time, though, and despite some late fireworks from Matthew Forde, the Windies fell heartbreakingly short by just 3 runs. Powell, who had taken them to the brink, needing only 6 off 3, will be gutted to have missed out on completing a remarkable heist.

What a spectacle we’ve just witnessed at Eden Park! New Zealand have scraped through by the barest of margins to square the series in a contest that went right down to the wire. West Indies, despite being on the back foot for most of the chase, refused to give up and pushed the hosts all the way - a reminder that you can never count them out, especially in this format with the kind of firepower they possess.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The players are already out in the middle now. Brandon King and Alick Athanaze are the two openers for West Indies. Jacob Duffy to start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

…THE RUN CHASE…

Now, chasing a formidable 208 for victory, the West Indies will need something special from their batters to pull this off. Can the visitors rise to the occasion and seal a 2-0 series lead, or will the New Zealand bowlers strike back to level the series 1-1 heading into the third game? We’ll find out soon. Join us shortly for the second innings.

Mark Chapman, the pick of the batters for New Zealand, is up for a chat. He says that it is nice to hit a couple out of the middle of the bat but hopes that they have enough runs on the board. Adds that there is some extra bounce on the wicket, and he just wanted to keep going. Mentions that he has been short of runs lately, and it helps to get some in front of your home crowd.

For the West Indies, Matthew Forde was the standout performer with the ball, returning impressive figures of 1/17 from his four overs. Jason Holder, Roston Chase, and Romario Shepherd chipped in with a wicket apiece. It was a tough outing for Jayden Seales, however, as the young pacer was taken to task and conceded over 60 runs in his spell.

A brilliant batting performance from New Zealand propels them to a commanding total of 207/5 from 20 overs. Asked to bat first, Devon Conway initially struggled for rhythm, while Tim Robinson (39) looked more settled. The pair added 55 runs to lay a solid foundation for the innings. At the halfway point, the hosts were at 72/2, but they surged in the second half, piling on 135 runs in the final 10 overs. A staggering 82 of those came between the 13th and 16th overs, thanks to some explosive hitting from Mark Chapman, who blasted a rapid 78 off just 28 balls. Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner then provided the finishing touches, ensuring the total exceeded the 200-run mark.

On the other hand, the West Indies have bowled with discipline so far, maintaining a tight line and length while picking up key wickets. All in readiness now. The teams and the umpires make their way out to the ground. Devon Conway and Tim Robinson stride out to open the innings for New Zealand. It will be Jayden Seales to begin with the ball for the West Indies. We are moments away from the live action.

Mitchell Santner, the skipper of New Zealand, says that the West Indies kept regrouping, and it got a little too close at the end. Shares that the runs seemed quite far away for most of the chase, and then suddenly, in the last over, it got close. Adds that it was a great experience. Shares that if they stay in and give themselves a chance, they can cash in, especially at a ground like Eden Park, where the conditions are pretty good. Closes by adding that they need to get a solid start with the bat and build on from there.

Shai Hope, the skipper of the West Indies, says that it's the same wicket as the first game and he does not expect it to change much. Adds that it might get better for batting later on. Mentions that they won a T20I against New Zealand after a long time in the first match. Ends by saying that they just want to continue to build on the momentum from the Bangladesh series. Informs they are unchanged.

West Indies (Unchanged Playing XI) - Brandon King, Alick Athanaze, Shai Hope (C/WK), Ackeem Auguste, Roston Chase, Rovman Powell, Jason Holder, Romario Shepherd, Matthew Forde, Akeal Hosein, Jayden Seales.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Tim Robinson, Devon Conway (WK), Rachin Ravindra, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner (C), Zakary Foulkes, Kyle Jamieson, Jacob Duffy, Ish Sodhi (in place of James Neesham).

TOSS - West Indies have won the toss and opted to BOWL.

So, will the home side bounce back to even things up, or will the West Indies continue their winning run to go 2-0 up? We’ll find out soon. Toss and team news coming up shortly. Stay tuned!

For New Zealand, there were plenty of positives despite the loss. Their bowlers kept the visitors under 170, with Jacob Duffy, Kyle Jamieson, and Zak Foulkes impressing with the ball. However, the batting unit struggled to build partnerships, slipping to 107/9 before Mitchell Santner’s unbeaten 55 off 28 balls gave them a glimmer of hope. In the end, they fell just short, but the Black Caps will be determined to hit back and level the series.

Batting first in the first game, the West Indies posted a competitive 164/6, thanks to valuable contributions from Shai Hope, Rovman Powell, and Roston Chase. A disciplined bowling performance, led by Chase and Jayden Seales, and supported by Akeal Hosein, Matthew Forde, and Romario Shepherd, helped them secure a thrilling 7-run victory. The visitors will aim to deliver a similar all-round effort tonight.

Hello, and a warm welcome to our coverage of the second T20 International in this five-match series between New Zealand and the West Indies, from Eden Park in Auckland. After a narrow defeat in the opening T20I, the hosts will be eager to bounce back, while the Men in Maroon will look to build on their momentum and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series.

…MATCHDAY…

West Indies and New Zealand are set to face off again at Eden Park for the second T20I. With matches on consecutive days, consistency and quick adjustments will be crucial in Auckland. West Indies hold the lead in the five-match series after an inspiring bowling effort in the opener. They looked a few runs short at the halfway mark, but their bowlers rose to the occasion to defend the total. Mitchell Santner gave them a real scare with his late fireworks, but the visitors held their nerve to secure their first win in regulation time in T20Is in New Zealand. From a New Zealand perspective, Jacob Duffy stood out with the ball, while Kyle Jamieson and Zakary Foulkes did not bowl too badly either. The surprise, however, was Santner himself, who went wicketless and conceded 10 an over on a surface that offered some grip. The skipper will be eager to make amends in the second game as he and his side look to draw level in the series. On the batting front, the lack of meaningful partnerships hurt New Zealand’s chase. Devon Conway is still searching for form, having struggled right through the Australia, England, and now the West Indies series. With conditions expected to remain similar, the likes of Rachin Ravindra, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, and James Neesham will all be keen to step up and deliver stronger performances this time around. As for West Indies, the big question coming into this series from Bangladesh was how they would adjust to the conditions in New Zealand. It was the experience of Shai Hope, Roston Chase, and Rovman Powell that shone through for the visitors in the opening game. Brandon King had a quiet tour of Bangladesh and will be eager to get among the runs this time. Akeal Hosein, a key spin weapon in T20Is and often used with the new ball, surprisingly bowled just one over. It will be interesting to see how and when Hope uses him, especially given the number of left-handers in the Kiwi batting lineup. In the pace department, Matthew Forde showed good promise with the new ball in the Powerplay but went for a few against Santner later in the innings. With no Shamar Joseph or Alzarri Joseph available for this series, the Windies will rely heavily on Jayden Seales and Jason Holder to shoulder the responsibility with the ball. Will Hope and his men produce another impressive performance to go 2-0 up, or will Santner’s side respond to draw level in the series? We shall find out.
