Commentary

Right then, Pakistan are finally up and running in the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup but have they left it a bit too late? Only time will tell. Next up, the action continues in the tournament with a couple of exciting matches. First up, it will be Sri Lanka taking on Nepal in Florida and that contest will begin on Wednesday, 12 June at 5 am IST (11.30 pm GMT) and then Australia will take on Namibia in Antigua beginning at 6 am IST (12.30 am GMT). You can join us a lot sooner though for the build-up of both those games. Till then, take care and goodbye!

The Pakistan skipper, Babar Azam says it's a good win and credits the boys. Says they bowled well in the Powerplay and adds once you get a good start with the ball, you can always capitalise on it further. Says that the NRR was in their mind and they aimed to finish it before 14 overs but the pitch made it a bit difficult as it was a two-paced wicket. Further adds that they will go with the same mindset for their last game and adds the pitch conditions are much improved in the Caribbean as compared to these tracks.

Saad Bin Zafar, the captain of Canada says that the result is a bit disappointing and they wanted to play a positive brand of cricket but it was a difficult wicket to bat early on and reckons they were 25 runs short. Mentions that the opposition bowlers bowled well and they need early wickets to penetrate the middle order which didn't happen. Adds that facing high-quality sides is a learning curve for them and applauds Aaron Johnson for his innings and reckons that the run out of Nicholas Kirton was crucial as well.

Mohammad Amir is the Player of the Match. He says he is really pleased with the performance and says as a bowler you need to adapt according to the conditions and got the success. Says he hit the right areas and got the desired success. Adds as a professional, you need to be ready for any situations. Says the plan was clear to set them up, and bring the ball back in which he succeeded. Ends up by saying it was an important win and another one just might help them for Super 8.

The Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Babar Azam won the toss and opted to field first even after seeing a total being defended in the previous two games here but it was a fresh pitch and Pakistan wanted to make the best use of it. Shaheen Afridi was far from his best yet again and it was Mohammad Amir who starred in the early stages of the innings with the ball after which a wayward Haris Rauf put together a few top deliveries and got a couple of quick wickets. The big moment was the run out of in-form Nicholas Kirton and Canada couldn't kick on. The big man, Aaron Johnson though played some delightful shots and powered the ball over the fence multiple times to notch up a fifty and propel Canada over 100 runs. Both teams will now have their eyes on the India vs USA clash as that could decide the fate of this group.

Canada are now in the same boat as Pakistan with just one win from 3 and with a game left to play. Their bowlers though were pretty solid throughout but simply could take enough wickets at the start of the chase. Jeremy Gordon bowled a lovely spell upfront whereas Kaleem Sana was a bit off-color and it was Dilon Heyliger who used his height well and got that uneven bounce going and picked up a couple of wickets. The spinners didn't do much damage and were dealt with quite easily by Pakistan and in the end, Canada were about 15 runs or so short on this demanding pitch.

A win alas for Pakistan and a pretty comfortable one at that as well. However, there were still signs of nervousness given how the previous two games panned out and Pakistan will feel they could have won the game quicker and improved that net run rate which might be crucial when the time comes. Needing 107 for the win, Pakistan started decently with a new opening duo and Saim Ayub tried to play a few positive strokes. However, he soon fell and Pakistan had a sluggish Powerplay overall. The two stalwarts, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan stitched together a vital stand and there were glimpses of some aggression from the skipper but it just didn't come off as he would have wanted. Babar got out with 24 runs still required but Rizwan stayed on and brought up a half-century. Fakhar Zaman came in and walked back with just 3 runs required after which Usman Khan came in and hit the winning runs.

17.32

DONE AND DUSTED! PAKISTAN WIN BY 7 WICKETS AND FINALLY GET THOSE TWO CRUCIAL POINTS ON THE BOARD. Angles it into the pads, on a fuller length, Usman Khan flicks it through widish mid-wicket for a brace and finishes off things positively for Pakistan. Also, quite interestingly, this is the highest run chase at this venue. Pakistan with this win have just saved themselves from a huge embarrassment and also their hopes that were swinging on a knife's edge.

17.31wd

WIDE! Banged short in length, down leg, Usman Khan leaves. Wide called.

Usman Khan is the new man in.

17.2W

OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! Just a consolation wicket for Canada! Jeremy Gordon bowls it outside off on a shade fuller length, Fakhar Zaman goes for a big slash over covers but slices it up in the air. The ball spoons over backward point where the substitute fielder, Dilpreet Bajwa in the deep backtracks and takes an excellent grab.

17.11

Over the wicket, slower one outside off, Mohammad Rizwan skips down the track, swings wildly at it, but inside edges it towards deep square leg for a single.

OUT! TAKEN! Beautiful take from Shreyas Movva behind the stumps again and Babar Azam gets nicked off whilst trying to be too cheeky. Just back of a length and angling in from a tight line around the off stump. Babar goes on the back foot and looks to run the ball fine and pretty late but ends up getting it off the face of the bat and down to the right of the keeper who springs across and pouches it brilliantly.

14.30

Back of a length and over the stumps, Babar Azam goes hard at this one as well but ends up misucing the ball completely and ends up hitting himself on the body with the bat.

Commentary

We are back for Pakistan's reply! The two umpires walk out to the middle. Canadian players are in the last-minute huddle before spreading out to the field. Out walk the dynamic Pakistani opener, Mohammad Rizwan with his new partner, Saim Ayub. The former takes the guard and prepares himself to face Kaleem Sana who will bowl the first over of the chase for Canada. And, here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, 107 it is to chase for Pakistan to get their first two points and stay alive in this competition. They have all the requisite firepower in the batting order to do the job but given how badly their batting order has collapsed and the way we have witnessed low-scoring thrillers, Canada will still fancy their chances on a bowler-friendly track. Stay tuned as the chase is up next shortly.

Aaron Johnson, the star with the bat for Canada is down for a chat. He says that his mentality is always to get his team off to a good start and the coach has backed him to see the ball and hit the ball. Reckons that it is tough but he has some Carribean background which helps him face the pacers. Adds that they do have some world-class pacers in their ranks and believes that they can defend the total.

For Pakistan, the goal was to establish control with the ball early on. Shaheen Afridi had a rough beginning, struggling to find his groove, while Naseem Shah posed significant challenges to the Canadian batters, often beating the bat by hitting the deck hard. Mohammad Amir made an impact right away, taking a wicket in his first over, and Afridi, after switching ends, quickly found success too. There was a good carry and bounce which helped the seamers to not leak runs at ease. Pakistan's fielding showed significant improvement, highlighted by Imad Wasim's direct hit that dismissed the in-form Nicholas Kirton, exering more pressure on the rivals. Haris Rauf, despite appearing a bit out of rhythm, struck a double whammy in the 10th over. Naseem Shah struck a crucial blow, dismissing the well-settled Aaron Johnson, shifting the momentum firmly in Pakistan's favor. They wrapped up pretty well in the end giving away literally nothing. Overall, the bowlers were disciplined and kept the batters in check throughout.

10 runs from the final over helps Canada to go past the 100-run mark. But this has been a comprehensive bowling display from the Pakistani bowlers. Canada began their innings with a promising start despite the challenging conditions favoring the bowlers. Aaron Johnson, eager to find some form, hit a few solid boundaries and set a positive tone for the team. However, Navneet Dhaliwal struggled with the movement and inconsistent bounce, getting out cheaply. Pargat Singh didn't fare much better, falling for a single-digit score. Nicholas Kirton, who has been in good form, was dismissed in the most unfortunate manner due to a total miscommunication, leaving Canada in a bit of trouble. And with the departures of Shreyas Movva, and Ravinderpal Singh. Johnson was left fighting a lone battle with only 54 on the board. Aaron Johnson's innings was then cut short as he lost his wicket shortly after reaching to a brilliant fifty. With a crucial cameo from Kaleem Sana, Canada breached past the triple figures in the backend.

A single off the last ball off the innings! Naseem Shah goes full again and bowls it right on the off stump, Kaleem Sana stays deep in the crease and hits it firmly to mid off before setting off for the run. The fielder misses the shy at the bowler's end and Sana does get the run. Canada finish with a decent total of 106/7!

19.51

Full and angled into middle and leg, Dilon Heyliger backs away and manages to jam it out to long on for a single.

19.41

This is dug in quite short and at the batter, Kaleem Sana pulls it away just over the square leg region and picks up a single.

19.36

SIX! Wow, that has been smashed away by Kaleem Sana and the 100 does come up for Canada. Just back of a length and outside off, Kaleem Sana backs away and slaps the ball hard and over the backward point fence for a biggie.

BYE! Short of a length and bowled slower around off stump, Dilon Heyliger swing and misses as Mohammad Rizwan fails to collect the ball cleanly and the batters get a bye.

19.10

Bowled from a bit wider on the crease and angled well into the batter, Dilon Heyliger looks to back away and swing across the line but gets an inside edge onto the body.

A beauty of a delivery to finish off the over. Nails the yorker right in at the toes, Kaleem Sana just backs away looking to jam it out but is beaten past the outside edge. The ball zips through bat and pad and misses the leg stump by not much either. The replays show that there was an inside edge on that one and Mohammad Amir is seen shaking his head as nobody really appealed for it.

18.51

A bit slower and dug in a bit around leg stump, Dilon Heyliger pulls it away through the mid-wicket region and picks up a run.

18.40

Full and quick, spearing the ball right in at the legs, Dilon Heyliger plays all over it and gets hit on the pads but outside the line of leg stump.

18.30

Takes pace off now and pityches it up wide of the off stump, Dilon Heyliger looks to stay leg side of the ball and swat it away but is well beaten.

18.24

FOUR! Crucial boundary! A quick bumper, looking to get it right around the helmet but the fine leg is up inside the ring. Dilon Heyliger takes it on and gets a top edge that flies over the infield and rolls away to the fine leg fence.

17.51

A direct hit and that would have been out! Slower again, a bit fuller and on middle, Kaleem Sana backs away before just dabbing it towards backward point and sets off for one. Dilon Heyliger at the other end is slow to get across but luckily for him, Shadab Khan misses the direct hit at the keeper's end.

17.40

In the air but falls in no-man's land. Another off-paced delivery, bowled a bit into the pitch and at the batter. Kaleem Sana gets squared up and gets a leading edge that lands well short of the onrushing Shadab Khan at backward point.

17.30

Nice and full around off, in the blockhole, Kaleem Sana waits well and defends it away to the off side.

17.20

Switches to around the stumps and looks to spear in the yorker on off stump, Kaleem Sana gets on the front foot and hits it on the bounce to the man at mid off.

17.11

Saad tries to hoick it away but miscues it up in the air around short fine leg. Mohammad Rizwan from behind the stumps runs around and settles under the ball before pouching it safely.

Drinks break! A well-contested first half of the chase but Pakistan will feel they have edged it out. The scoring rate hasn't been anything to write home about but they have lost just one wicket and with both their big guns, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan well set, they will be feeling at ease right now.

Drinks! Time for a breather here as the players take a hydration break. Well, things have gotten a bit more precarious for Canada as they have now lost half of their side on mere 55. Haris Rauf who looked wayward just struck a double whammy and has managed to put the men in green on the front foot here. For Canada, Aaron Johnson is fighting a lone battle with no real support from the others. This dramatic collapse has provided all the momentum for Pakistan and the bowlers will now aim to compound on the pressure they have created. Next set of 10 overs are crucial for Canada to at least go past triple digits.

OUT! TAKEN! Just too good for Ravinderpal Singh and all of a sudden. Haris Rauf has two wickets. Immaculate length again from Rauf, bowing it very quick and just around the top of off stump. This is nips away a bit as well and Singh is just beaten all ends up while looking to get on the front foot but plays it with a slightly closed bat face. The ball catches the outside edge and goes quickly around the face of first slip where Fakhar Zaman manages to get both hands out in front and grabs it nicely.

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Much better length and the line this time is also perfect. Haris Rauf gets his 100th T20I wicket and looks pretty pleased with that. Just short of a good length, at around 143.5 clicks and on a much tighter line around the off stump. The ball shoots off the deck as Shreyas Movva looks to cut close to the body off the back foot. Movva is a bit late and the extra bounce means the outside edge is found. Mohammad Rizwan gobbles it up and Canada now lose their fourth wicket.

Another slower one, pitched up on middle and leg, Johnson backs away and is undone by the lack of pace but the sheer brute force of his swing lifts the ball right up and over the long on fence.

7.50

A prolonged appeal for LBW by Shaheen Afridi but it is turned down and there was almost another run out as well. Shaheen brings out the off-cutter, bowling it on a length on off and middle, getting it to grip and spin away. Aaron Johnson gets squared up and gets hit on the pads but it seemed a bit too high. Shreyas Movva had also come halfway down the pitch before being sent back but no harm was done.

OUT! RUN OUT! Brilliant work from Imad Wasim in the field and Canada have lost their star batter from the previous two games quite cheaply here. Haris Rauf pitches the ball up around the off stump line, Aaron Johnson leans ahead and just pushes it out to the left of covers. They look for one but given Johnson has had a knee injury, he sends Nicholas Kirton back but it is a bit too late. Imad Wasim moves to his favored side, picks it up and scores the direct hit at the bowler's end. The replays confirm that Kirton is well out.

Is that run out? Two stumps to aim at, and Imad Wasim hits the bull's eye at the non-striker's end. The side-on replay shows that Nicholas Kirton is way out of the crease. OUT appears on the giant screen.

Done and dusted with the pre-match proceedings! It is now time to get the play underway and the two umpires are out in the middle. The players of Pakistan also take their places on the field and out come the two openers for Canada, Aaron Johnson and Navneet Dhaliwal. As usual, Shaheen Afridi will take the new ball and he is raring to go. A couple of slips in place as well, let's play...

We are just a few minutes away from the start of this crucial contest. Former Pakistani great and T20 World Cup winner, Shahid Afridi walks out with that coveted trophy and places it on the podium. The officials also make their way out in the middle followed by the two sets of players who lineup for their respective national anthems. It will be the national anthem of Canada first, followed by the national anthem of Pakistan.

Saad Bin Zafar, the skipper of Canada says that they would have bowled first as well as it looks like a pretty good wicket. Says the teams batting second have found it hard to chase and adds if they put a good total on the board, they will back themselves to defend it. Says they have been playing good cricket and it is just about staying consistent and repeat the performance of the last game. Tells that it is a must-win game for them and ends up saying if they post good runs on the board, the pressure will be on the opposition. Informs one change, Ravinderpal Singh comes in for Dilpreet Bajwa.

Babar Azam, the skipper of Pakistan wins the toss and says that they will bowl first given it is an early start and there will be moisture and will look to capitalize on the first six overs. Informs that Saim Ayub is in the side. Adds that they did have a word after the last match and they now focus on this match. Reckons that they need to be at their best and know that it is a must-win clash.

Pakistan (Playing XI) - Mohammad Rizwan (WK), Saim Ayub (In for Iftikhar Ahmed), Babar Azam (C), Fakhar Zaman, Usman Khan, Shadab Khan, Imad Wasim, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Amir.

Canada (Playing XI) - Aaron Johnson, Navneet Dhaliwal, Pargat Singh, Nicholas Kirton, Shreyas Movva (WK), Ravinderpal Singh (In for Dilpreet Bajwa), Saad Bin Zafar (C), Dilon Heyliger, Kaleem Sana, Junaid Siddiqui, Jeremy Gordon.

TOSS UPDATE - The coin flip lands in the favor of Pakistan and Babar Azam elects to BOWL first.

Entering this tournament as an associate nation, and literal underdogs, Canada finds themselves in a position where they have minimal pressure and everything to gain. They have already made a statement by pulling off an impressive 12-run victory over full member nation Ireland, defying expectations. Their batting has contributed heavily and the likes of Navneet Dhaliwal, Nicholas Kirton, and Shreyas Movva, all have been among the runs. The spin duo of Saad Bin Zafar and Junaid Siddiqui has been instrumental for Canada in the middle overs, showcasing their guile and control with the ball. Complementing their efforts has been the crafty bowling of Jeremy Gordon, who has effectively utilized his variations as well. If Canada manages to pull off a victory against the runner's-up Pakistan, it will give a huge boost to their morale and also might as well make them the contenders for Super 8s. But will they be able to execute the difficult task? Or will the wounded Pakistan strike a strong comeback? Stay tuned as the toss and teams are up next shortly.

Pakistan's chances of advancing to the Super 8 stage are extremely slim, as another defeat would effectively signal the end of their World Cup campaign. The men in green are feeling the heat, and a win has become an absolute necessity for them to keep their hopes alive. However, their batting unit has failed to fire collectively so far. While Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam have been among the runs, they have faced flak for their conservative approach with the willow. For Pakistan to stay afloat, they desperately need their top order to provide a blistering start followed by their middle order which has collapsed badly as well. If Pakistan manages to rectify their batting issues and find consistency with the bat, it will significantly bolster the effectiveness of their bowling attack, which has been their core strength thus far in the tournament. The Pakistani bowlers have been impressive, but they have lacked substantial run support due to the batting unit's underwhelming performances.

Hello and welcome to our coverage of this crucial Pool A match number 22 in the prestigious ICC Men's T20 World Cup, 2024. Today's clash features Pakistan taking on Canada at the Nassau Country International Cricket Stadium, New York. Canada is coming off a stunning win against Ireland and have got those two crucial points. However, it is a precarious situation for Pakistan, who are still reeling from a comprehensive and demoralizing loss against their arch-rivals India in their previous encounter.

... MATCH DAY ...

'Bruised and battered,' is the current state which can be used for Pakistan as they have thrown away a couple of games that they could have easily won and now find themselves on the brink. They did finish runners-up in the last edition of the T20 World Cup and are capable of even lifting the trophy but they seriously need to show more cohesiveness and execute their plans better. Now, they come up against a bouyant Canada side in Match number 21 of the ICC Men's World Cup 2024 which will be played at the Nassau County Stadium in New York, the same venue where Pakistan suffered that heartbreak against arch-rivals India. It is a must win game for both sides but Canada come into this game on the back of a formidable win against Ireland after a very solid showing against neighbors USA in their opening game which they did lose but both those performances will give them a confidence boost. As we talk more about Canada a lot of credit must go to how Saad Bin Zafar has led the side and they haven't backed down from a fight and some of the efforts in the field have been sensational. The likes of Aaron Johnson and Navneet Dhaliwal can be destructive at the top of the order but the man of Carribean origin, Nicholas Kirton has definitely been the standout with back-to-back half-centuries, the second one being a Player of the Match performance as well. Saad Bin Zafar and Junaid Siddiqui have done nicely in the middle overs with their spin bowling and Jeremy Gordon has used a brilliant mixture of slower balls, short balls and even the length which has yielded crucial wickets for his side. Moving on to Pakistan now and they really have a work to do as the batting has been nothing short of ordinary so far with glimpses of control in between. A lot relies on the duo of Mohammad Rizwan and skipper Babar Azam at the top of the order and even though, they have scored runs, neither has looked to take the game by the scruff of the neck. Fakhar Zaman is another name who will be expected to make a big impact as he has looked the most positive out of all the batters but hasn't managed to do enough damage. The pace attack on the other hand is a big positive as it generally is and yet it feels, they are just missing a bit of cutting edge at vital times. The inclusion of Imad Wasim in the previous matches was positive as well but it is the man who should be leading their spin attack, Shadab Khan who has been well under par for a long time now at the international stage and is now in the side primarily for his batting in the middle order which needs to make an impact. Right then, a game that could be make or break for either side and even a win might not be enough to propel either side into the qualifying places but a loss will certainly be fatal. Who are you backing to get the win?
