Commentary

So it is 2-0 then, for a confident Pakistan against a fairly inexperienced South African side, at least in their bowling, choosing to rest key players ahead of the Test series. Pakistan would be happy with this momentum and aim for a whitewash come Sunday, 22nd December, 2024, when they play the 'Pink ODI' - the final one-dayer of this series, in Johannesburg. The first ball in that game is scheduled to be bowled at 12 pm GMT but our build up will begin way earlier. So do tune in early. Till then, you can catch all the action from the Zimbabwe-Afghanistan series and the West Indies-Bangladesh series. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!

MOHAMMAD RIZWAN, the victorious captain of Pakistan, says that it is a team game and everyone chipped in at different stages. Adds that Saim Ayub gave them a good start and then he (Rizwan) and Babar Azam took the match deep, which was the plan. Mentions that Kamran Ghulam played an incredible knock and he always trusted him to come up with the goods, having played with him at Peshawar in domestic cricket. Ends by saying that Pakistan's bowlers were fantastic as well with Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed, all chipping in with wickets.

TEMBA BAVUMA, skipper of South Africa, says that for the first 25 overs with the ball, they had the game under control but in the next 25, they let it slip, conceding more than 200 runs in the latter half, erasing all the good work that they had done earlier. Is firm on his decision to bowl first and says that there was plenty on offer for the bowlers early on. Admits that batting has been letting them down with batters not reaching the three-figure mark. Adds that while it is a positive that batters are getting in, they would want to start converting those starts into hundreds.

Pakistan's KAMRAN GHULAM HAS BEEN ADJUDGED THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH, for his blitzkrieg knock of 63 (32). He says that he is happy with his performance and with the series victory as well. Says that the team has been working hard in the last couple of years and the results are showing now.

... THE PRESENTATION ...

Earlier in the day, Pakistan concentrated on keeping wickets in hand and creating a foundation for the end. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan created that platform while Salman Agha and Kamran Ghulam smashed past the 300-mark to get 329 on the board. South Africa did not bowl well towards the end but what would have hurt them badly is that they dropped as many 5 catches in the innings, with 3 coming in the last 6 overs. Please stay tuned for the presentation...

This was a pitch tailor-made for Pakistan from the 90s. Choke the opposition with spin and then kill them with reverse swing. South Africa were trying to claw their way back through the Klassen-Miller stand but Rizwan turned to Shaheen Afridi in the 34th over and he did not disappoint. He struck in the 34th, 36th and 38th overs, removing Miller, Jansen and Phehlukwayo, literally killing the game. He finished with 4 wickets while Naseem Shah took 3. But the real pressure was maintained by Haris Rauf and Abrar Ahmed in the middle overs and not to forget, Salman Agha, though he went for a few towards the end.

A series of starts was the story of this run chase. 5 out of the top 6 got starts, but could not convert them into anything substantial. Perhaps it was the required rate, or perhaps it was the effect of T20 cricket. But unlike Pakistan, the Protea batters were not keen on building a strong base. That led to four wickets falling a bit too quickly and the drama unfolded.

Chasing 330 for victory, the hosts got off to a decent start, reaching 74/1. It was then that spin was introduced and that proved to be their achilles heel. Abrar Ahmed got one to get past Tony de Zorzi and the Proteas got into a shell. After scoring 67/1 in Powerplay 1, they managed just 39/2 in the next 10 overs, visibly cautious. As the visitors sensed a comeback, David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen got together to build a partnership. But because it was a matter of just one wicket, the tourists were confident. The Proteas were 185/4 when Miller was dismissed - and that began their slide. Eventually, it was too much for Klaasen to do, though he tried his best with a valiant 97.

There was a time when T20 used to be called as Pakistan's format. But in this year, it has been ODIs which have been Pakistan's strength. Their batters have enjoyed playing traditional cricket, laying down platforms and bashing towards the end, while the bowlers have rediscovered the art of reverse swing. And when the latter happens, there are very few teams better than Pakistan.

Consistency and Pakistan? Anode and cathode. But not in 2024. Beat Australia 2-1 in Australia. Beat Zimbabwe 2-1 in Zimbabwe. And now, have defeated South Africa in this ODI series. Third consecutive ODI series win and that too, on the road. Have Pakistan turned a corner?

43.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! Taken this time. Klaasen cannot get his hundred. A length ball, outside off, Heinrich Klaasen picks it up and looks to pull it out of the ground but cannot quite find the distance again. Maybe, it is the wind on that side. Irfan Khan comes running sideways to his right and takes a good catch. Klaasen is stopped at 97 and PAKISTAN WIN BY 81 RUNS, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in this 3-match ODI series!

Tabraiz Shamsi survives! Fuller and around off, Tabraiz Shamsi steers it towards third slip. South Africa needs 82 runs in 42 balls now!

42.51

Back of a length and on off, Heinrich Klaasen looks jab it away but gets an inside edge towards short fine for a run.

42.40

Play and a miss! Shaheen Afridi lands this on a hard length and around middle, Heinrich Klaasen moves a long way across to scoop it away but misses.

42.32

DROPPED! Is Heinrich Klaasen destined to get a century tonight? Saim Ayub puts down an absolute sitter. A length ball, outside off, Klaasen swings for the heavens and hits this miles in the air. But he is unable to find the distance and Ayub at deep mid-wicket gets to the ball. Takes the catch, but fumbles. Tries to take it on the second attempt, but puts it down. He is downcast but then suddenly someone screams to throw the ball as the batters look for the second. The fielder has a shy at the bowler's end but misses. Had he hit, this game would have been over!

42.21

On middle and leg, Tabraiz Shamsi looks to flick but almost hits it way too well. The ball is high in the air but does not carry to deep mid-wicket. A single taken.

Tabraiz Shamsi is the last man in, replacing Kwena Maphaka. Obviously, South Africa will rely entirely on Klaasen, but can he get his century at least?

42.1W

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! The eagle now has four. On a good length, just outside off, Kwena Maphaka pushes at it. The ball straightens a touch, takes the outside edge and just about carries to the keeper, Mohammad Rizwan. Kwena Maphaka departs for 1 (2) and South Africa are 244/9, needing another 86 from 47 balls.

Will Abrar get another? Not right now. Shaheen Afridi is back on. 7-0-43-3 so far.

Debutant Kwena Maphaka walks in at number 10, replacing Bjorn Fortuin.

OUT! TAKEN! Naseem Shah gets his second wicket now! He bowls this full and on middle with pace. Bjorn Fortuin backs away to loft it over extra covers but hits it from the toe end of his bat. The ball goes high up in the air and Babar Azam at extra covers circles around to take a good catch. Bjorn Fortuin falls for 9 off 13 and South Africa still need 87 runs from 49 balls. Pakistan just need two more wickets!

41.41

Is that a chance? It looks like one but a very tough one. Pitched up and on off, Heinrich Klaasen drives it uppishly down the pitch. Naseem Shah fails to get down quickly in his followthrough as the ball goes under his hands towards long off. They cross.

41.31

Outside off, on a length, Bjorn Fortuin punches this through the covers for a run.

41.21

Around off, helped through mid-wicket. A bit of a yes-yes and a no-no for the second and eventually, they settle for the single. 89 more needed from 52 balls now.

41.14

FOUR! The Klaasen show has begun! Naseem Shah misdirects it down the leg side with fine leg up and Heinrich Klaasen just works it to the left of short fine leg for a boundary! Moves to 92 (68) with his 8th four.

Quicker, full and outside off, keeps it out of his arc, Heinrich Klaasen throws his bat at it but misses.

SIX! Gets enough once again! Tossed up, full and on middle, turns in a shy bit. Heinrich Klaasen goes for it and slogs it with the spin and over the deep square leg fence for another biggie.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The Pakistan players are in a huddle where Mohammad Rizwan is giving them a last-minute pep talk before they take the field. Temba Bavuma and Tony de Zorzi are the two openers for South Africa. Shaheen Afridi to start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then. 330 is definitely a good target at Newlands but South Africa do have good batting firepower. Also, considering that this is a day-night game, there could be dew around under the lights. However, Vernon Philander earlier remarked that at this time of the year, the sun sets very late and maybe, there may not be dew around. Does that mean that Pakistan's spinners come into foray? The hosts came unstuck against spin last time around and with this being a do-or-die clash for them, they will aim to do better and build partnerships to chase this big total. Pakistan, on the other hand, after their high in Australia, are chasing their third straight ODI series win, to enter the Champions Trophy full of confidence. Will it be 2-0 tonight? Stay tuned for the answer.

Pakistan's BABAR AZAM is up for a quick chat. He says that Pakistan were looking for something around 300, but they are very happy to get to 330. Praises Mohammad Rizwan for the way he batted, and then is happier to see Salman Agha and Kamran Ghulam finish the innings well. Mentions that the pitch is good and the ball is coming onto the bat nicely. Ends by saying that Agha bowled brilliantly in the last game and with Abrar Ahmed also in good form, they are hoping they will defend this target.

One can congratulate the young Kwena Maphaka for showing a big heart. He was hit all around the park but managed to come back in the middle overs and bag the wicket of Mohammad Rizwan. And then, towards the end, he picked up 2 wickets in his final over to finish with four. He becomes the 8th bowler from South Africa to pick up 4 or more wickets on ODI debut and just the second left-arm bowler after Lonwabo Tsotsobe. Jansen was goot at the start but towards the end, he went for plenty, though he did pick up 3.

One thing that would hurt South Africa the most is their fielding. Their bowling lacked penetration but one can understand that by looking at the inexperienced attack. Remember, the Proteas are concentrating on having their strongest players for the Tests, in their bid to qualify for the World Test Championship final and hence, one cannot see the likes of Kagiso Rabada here. That inexperience showed as Marco Jansen lacked support from the other end. However, there were as many as 5 dropped catches - 3 coming in the last 6 overs. That is not something that the rainbow nation would like to speak about.

It looks a very healthy batting scorecard with just one single-digit figure in the top 7 and even though Ayub made 25, he was involved in a decent stand with Babar. If one wants to be critical, the fact could be pointed out that Ayub, Babar and Rizwan - all three got starts - but none made it to the three-figure mark. However, that was covered up by Ghulam's cameo towards the end.

Pakistan did not start that well, losing Abdullah Shafique on the very fourth ball of the match. But then, they got decent stands through Saim Ayub, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. At 168/2 in the 33rd over, they were looking at around 280-290 but quick wickets of Babar and Rizwan got the Proteas back into the game. However, Salman Agha and a blinder of an innings from Kamran Ghulam pushed the Proteas onto the brink.

A bit of a harakiri towards the end but Pakistan have got themselves a good total. They played traditional one-day cricket, starting slow, keeping wickets in hand and then going big at the end. At one stage, when even 300 did not look possible, the visitors have managed to touch 329, getting 63 in the last 5 overs.

49.61W+wd

OUT! RUN OUT! What an anti-climactic end to the innings! Kwena Maphaka bowls this full but down the leg side. Naseem Shah lets it go as it is a wide. However, Abrar Ahmed wants the run and sets off with Naseem not even looking at him. Abrar turns back but by then Heinrich Klaasen throws the ball to the bowler who takes the bails off. Pakistan have been bowled out for 329!

49.51b

A slower one, on a length and on off, Abrar Ahmed backs away and swings at it but misses as it goes on two bounces to the keeper. The batters steal a bye.

49.44

FOUR! Abrar Ahmed joins the party now! Kwena Maphaka goes fuller and wide outside off. Abrar Ahmed gets cheeky and moves across to scoop it over short fine for a boundary.

Abrar Ahmed is the last man in, replacing Haris Rauf.

49.3W

OUT! CAUGHT! A 4-fer for the youngster. A slower ball, outside off, Rauf is early into his slog and gets a massive top edge. The ball swirls in the air but has gone only as far as mid off. The substitute Ryan Rickelton circles under it and gets to the ball, but puts it down. However, he is able to hold on in the second attempt. Can Maphaka get a 5-fer?

49.26

SIX! BANG! Some way to start your inning. A length ball, outside off, Haris Rauf expectantly stands deep in his crease and flat-bats it over long on!

Haris Rauf walks in now at number 10, replacing Kamran Ghulam.

49.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! Two in two for South Africa. But end of a wonderful, wonderful knock from Kamran Ghulam. A dynamic innings of 63 from just 32 balls, snatching the winds out of the Protean sails. A slower ball, on a length, outside off, angling away, Ghulam gets down on a knee and winds up for a massive slog. But he is undone by the change in pace and only skies it high in the air. Aiden Markram covers good ground to his right from long on and dives to end Ghulam's innings. 5 balls left. Pakistan are 317/8. How much more can the tail add? Maphaka gets his third as well.

Naseem Shah walks in now at number 9, replacing Shaheen Afridi.

It goes high in the air towards long off where Ryan Rickelton (Sub) runs forward, settles under it and pouches it safely. Afridi walks back after a good cameo and Pakistan are 317/7!

48.56

SIX! Clean strike this time! Marco Jansen takes pace off and lands this on a hard length, on off. Shaheen Afridi reaches for it a bit and dispatches it over the long on fence for a biggie.

48.40

Swing and a miss! Marco Jansen follows the batter and bangs this into the pitch, on leg. Shaheen Afridi backs away and swings across the line but misses.

48.31

Outside off, pushed through the off side for one.

48.21

Another slower ball, outside off, Shaheen Afridi swings hard but loses his bat. The ball flies off the top edge and lands just beside the pitch on the off side. A run taken.

48.11

ANOTHER DROP! What is happening out there? Kwena Maphaka is the latest culprit. A short ball, around off, slower in pace, Kamran Ghulam goes for the pull but is early into the shot. Gets a massive top edge which goes only as far as deep square leg. The 18-year old Maphaka gets to the ball on the run, takes the catch but overruns and loses his balance and the ball. One run taken.

A short ball, around off, Ghulam miscues his pull over mid on and gets a couple.

47.14

DROPPED, FOUR! Kwena Maphaka returns and has been greeeted with some bad luck. A short ball, outside off, Kamran Ghulam slashes hard but gets a thick outside edge. Tony de Zorzi is stationed at pretty fine deep third but he is late in picking up the ball. Is unsure whether to go for the catch or save the boundary and eventually, goes for the catch. However, he is late and cannot hang on to the sharp chance, with the ball dipping onto him. Worse, it rolls behind for a boundary.

The ball goes high up in the air and Babar Azam at extra covers circles around to take a good catch. Bjorn Fortuin falls for 9 off 13 and South Africa still need 87 runs from 49 balls. Pakistan just need two more wickets!

OUT! LBW! Well, that is one of the most bizarre events that Afridi would have had in his life. It was a full and fast delivery, around middle and leg and Andile Phehlukwayo tried to jam it back to the bowler. Now, the ball spooned of the face of the bat and went towards the bowler, who plonked it. Now, Afridi has his face in his hands, disappointed that he dropped the catch. But Rizwan was confident that it hit the boot first and went up for the review for LBW. Sure enough. UltraEdge confirmed that the ball hit the boot first and Ball Tracker showed the ball to be crashing into the stumps! Phehlukwayo departs for 1 (6) and South Africa have slipped from 185/4 to 205/7. As long as Klaasen and Miller are out in the middle, Pakistan will not breathe easily. At the same time, a wicket here and it will increase the pressure ten fold. Ironic as it might seem, South Africa are ahead of Pakistan at this stage. After 26 overs, Pakistan were 121/2, while the Saffas are 19 ahead, but crucially, with 2 extra wickets lost. This was the period when the Babar-Rizwan partnership was going strong and the visitors were mainly concerned in building partnerships, rather than going for boundaries. The Proteas might want to emulate the same. Now then - what's happening out in the middle? Klaasen seems to be complaining something to the umpires. Rizwan is in the action, giving something to the Proteas. The umpires try to calm down the players, with Babar stepping in as well. Spicy stuff!

OUT! LBW! Abrar Ahmed traps Markram! Playing your shots against spin can always be a double-edged sword. One felt that Markram and Klaasen were comfortable against Salman but against Abrar, they were not so sure. Markram tried to change that perception and has perished. This was flatter, around off and Aiden got across to lap it around the corner. Had he connected, he would have got a boundary. But he did not connect. He got hit on the pads and Pakistan appealed loud and hard. The umpire moved away though. Now, there was a lot of deliberation amongst the fielders whether the impact was outside off and whether the ball was doing too much. Down the leg side, Aiden Markram looks to shoulder arms and get a wide but while trying to move across, the ball hits him on the body!

20.40

Fast and short, around off, AM mistimes his pull to short mid-wicket.

Quicker, outside off, Aiden comes down the track and flicks it to short mid-wicket.

Change of ball? Seems to be the case. That hit the advertising boards and perhaps scuffed the ball up. So the umpires are getting the ball changed.

Another short delivery, on off, Aiden Markram stabs it to sweeper covers for one.

19.51

DROPPED! A decent effort but to be fair that should have been taken. Abrar Ahmed bowls the leg-break, full and on off, turns away. Heinrich Klaasen fails to pick it up and goes for the big slog across the line. He only manages to get a top edge towards sweeper covers. Naseem Shah runs forward and long way and dives to grab it but it hits his wrists and pops out. A single is taken. This could be very costly for Pakistan, as we all know how dangerous is Heinrich Klaasen.

Seems like Abrar has hurt his left hand's fingers here. It was not a chance but when the ball landed and zipped through, the seam might have burst through his hands.

19.40

Flatter, shortish and on middle and leg, Heinrich Klaasen turns it to the leg side.

19.31

Uppish but safe! Abrar Ahmed drops it short once more, on off, sticks to the surface a bit. Aiden Markram moves back and drives it on the up. It goes aerially wide of the bowler, where Abrar dives to his left but it goes just under his hand and to long off. They cross.

That over really helped South Africa. 11 runs came from it, the biggest so far in this innings. In fact, it was only the second double-digit over in this run chase. The hosts will hope that they get some momentum.

There are a couple of dry spots on the surface. When the balls land on those dry spots, some tend to bounce low while some others tend to come on slowly. It is difficult to commit forward when such things happen.

17.34

FOUR! Gets it through! Abrar Ahmed drags his length back and on off. Aiden Markram backs away and cuts it away nicely past the diving point fielder. Naseem Shah in the deep runs to his left and puts in a dive but the ball wins the race to the fence.

No matter how high the required rate is, Klaasen and Markram won't be scared. They will concentrate on building a partnership and then accelerate after being set, Pakistan, on the other hand, can sense that they are on top here. If Abrar Ahmed and Salman Agha can bowl a few quick and frugal overs in tandem, the Saffas might just get suffocated.

Rassie van der Dussen advances down the track to slog it away but fails to get underneath the ball. He gets more height than distance as the ball goes miles in the air towards deep mid-wicket. Saim Ayub moves forward, settles under it nicely and takes a good catch. A big wicket for the visitors as a set Rassie van der Dussen departs for 23 off 30. DRINKS BREAK. It did not seem that way during the innings break, but the pitch has suddenly become difficult to bat upon. The new balls came nicely onto the bat in Powerplay 1 but once they have become older and gone softer, batting has become challenging. Pakistan were not quite at their best with the new balls, but managed to get rid of both the openers. And now, the onset of Abrar Ahmed is pushing the Saffas back, creating doubts in their minds. When a spinner is bowling so well, one way to counter him is to start using one's feet and play some attacking strokes. Do South African batters have the confidence to come down the track or sweep Abrar? Cannot be playing him from the pitch by staying back. Need to come forward and play him off the hand.

Not quite sure whether it is the heat or has the pitch looked like this always.

OUT!

OUT!

OUT!

A short ball, outside off, Irfan Khan smacks the pull, flat towards deep mid-wicket. The ball travels at great speed but along comes Miller, as cool as a cucumber, charging in to the charging ball, going low and picking it inches off the ground. Absolutely superb stuff, ensuring that the drop on the previous ball does not count. Irfan Khan departs for 15 (16) and the quickfire 49-run stand has been broken. Pakistan are 291/6 with 21 balls left.

DROPPED! Temba Bavuma, of all the people! The Proteas are definitely feeling the heat now. Fuller, around off, another slower ball, Khan goes for the big flick but gets a massive leading edge in the air. The ball swirls for eternity and Bavuma has got plenty of time to get under it at mid off. He gets underneath the ball, but when it comes down, he puts it down! Two runs taken.

However, the ball is going to the left of the bowler while Maphaka is going to his right, in his followthrough. He keeps his eyes on the ball and then dives forward to take a screamer. A wicket against the run of play and Andile Phehlukwayo gets the breakthrough South Africa were so desperately looking for. He bangs this into the pitch, on middle, begging to be hit. Babar Azam stands tall and connects with his pull shot well, but unfortunately fails to get it over and hits it straight to Aiden Markram at short mid-wicket who takes it sharply. Babar falls for 73 off 95 and the 115-run stand has been broken. Pakistan are 168/3 after 33 overs!

Drinks! The experienced duo of Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam have notched up their respective fifties and have changed the gears in the last few overs. They have formed a solid platform for Pakistan to go well over 300. South Africa needs to break this partnership and then put some pressure on the middle order to restrict the visitors or else they could be chasing something huge here. Also, Andile Phehlukwayo to bowl after the break.

We are all set to begin! The South African players are making their way out to the middle and then spread out to take their respective field positions. Abdullah Shafique and Saim Ayub are the two openers for Pakistan. Marco Jansen has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

Pakistan (Unchanged Playing XI) - Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique, Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan (C/WK), Kamran Ghulam, Salman Agha, Irfan Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Abrar Ahmed.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Tony de Zorzi, Temba Bavuma (C) (In place of Ryan Rickelton), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen (WK), David Miller (In place of Tristan Stubbs), Marco Jansen, Andile Phehlukwayo, Bjorn Fortuin (In place of Ottneil Baartman), Kwena Maphaka (In place of Kagiso Rabada and On Debut), Tabraiz Shamsi.

TOSS - South Africa have won the toss and elected to BOWL first.

With Kagiso Rabada and Ottneil Baartman taking two wickets each in the opener, South Africa will need a sharper performance from their bowling attack to level the series. Pakistan, meanwhile, will look to seal the series with another spirited performance. Can the Proteas bounce back, or will Pakistan clinch the series in Cape Town? Stay tuned to find out as we bring you the Toss and other pre-match excitement.

Pakistan’s chase began shakily, with Abdullah Shafique falling for a duck. Saim Ayub and Babar Azam steadied the innings briefly before the skipper departed. Mohammad Rizwan’s struggles continued, but Saim Ayub anchored the innings with a sublime century, supported by Agha Salman, who contributed a half-century and struck the winning runs in the final over.

The series opener saw South Africa make a late change, replacing the injured Keshav Maharaj with Andile Phehlukwayo. However, Maharaj has since been ruled out of the series, with Bjorn Fortuin named as his replacement. The Proteas will also welcome back David Miller, who missed the first match, while regular skipper Temba Bavuma is expected to return after being rested. In Paarl, South Africa opted to bat first and started well, with Tony de Zorzi and Ryan Rickelton adding 70 runs for the opening wicket. But Agha Salman turned the game on its head with a stellar spell, claiming four wickets in his first four overs, including key dismissals of de Zorzi, Rickelton, Rassie van der Dussen, and Tristan Stubbs. Heinrich Klaasen fought back with a resilient half-century, supported by Aiden Markram and later Marco Jansen, but South Africa managed only 239/9.

Hello and a warm welcome to our coverage of Pakistan vs South Africa 2nd ODI. After a nail-biting finish in Paarl, the ODI series between South Africa and Pakistan moves to Cape Town for the second match at Newlands. With Pakistan leading 1-0 after a last-over victory in the opener, the Proteas face a must-win scenario to stay alive in the series.

... MATCH DAY ...

The caravan moves to Newlands in Cape Town for the second ODI of the three-match series between South Africa and Pakistan. After suffering a defeat in the series opener, the hosts are aiming for a quick turnaround to keep the series alive. In the opener, it was a story of squandered starts for the Proteas, with Heinrich Klaasen being the only one to post a substantial total, helping them reach 239. In reply, Pakistan found themselves in choppy waters, but a century from Saim Ayub and Salman Agha’s unbeaten 82 guided them over the line. The hosts will take heart from the fact that they managed to stretch the game to the final over and created a wobble for the visitors towards the end. However, South Africa's spin bowling resources have taken a hit, with Keshav Maharaj missing the last game due to a calf strain. A scan the day before the game will potentially provide more clarity on his availability. If he misses out, Tabraiz Shamsi will have to shoulder the burden, with no other frontline spin option available on the bench. This adds to the growing concerns for South Africa, who were already without David Miller due to a calf strain in the first game and their designated ODI skipper, Temba Bavuma, who was rested to manage his workload. The hosts will be hoping that at least one, if not both, of these key players to return for this must-win game. As for Pakistan, Saim Ayub has made the world take notice of his talent with performances across the two white-ball formats in this tour. However, the likes of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are yet to have an impactful knock, and the Pakistan fans will be hoping for a better showing from the experienced duo. Earlier this year, the Newlands surface came into the spotlight when the Test between South Africa and India lasted just 642 balls, making it the shortest result Test in the game's history, with pacers dominating the proceedings. With this being the first international game at the venue since that Test, it will be interesting to see how the pitch behaves towards the end of the year. Will the Proteas bounce back and force a series decider? Or will Pakistan seal the series with a game to go? We shall find out.
