The Lankan openers showed they are not here to defend and settle for a draw. Lahiru Udara in particular threw a couple of punches around but Taijul Islam came up with a juicy delivery to get rid of him. Pathum Nissanka, who was coming on the back of a brilliant century, gifted away his wicket in the very first over Nayeem Hasan bowled. Now, Bangladesh are right up there to do the unthinkable but with just 29 overs to go and 8 wickets away, we still feel, Sri Lanka will come up equally good. What felt like a faded day is turning out to be a thrilling one. Stay tuned for the all-important final session of the match.

What a passage of play for Bangladesh. Firstly, the skipper registered a twin century to put Bangladesh into a commanding position and declared the innings as they were running out of time (rain played a big part early on as it took out almost a couple of hours from Day 5), however, once resumption took place, Najmul Hossain Shanto took on the Lankan bowlers, scored a fine, fine century and declared just around time to give a small passage for the Bangladeshi bowlers to trouble the Lankan openers and boy they did the job.

UPDATE - 8.11 am GMT - The rain is playing hide-and-seek with us at the moment. It stopped for a bit, then started again, but now it has stopped for good. The sun is peeking through as well, and the covers are coming off too. The groundstaff are working hard to make the ground ready and barring any further showers, we should be getting a restart soon.

UPDATE - 7.24 am GMT - It is absolutely pouring down now, and with every passing minute, a draw is becoming more and more likely. Bangladesh will feel a bit hard done by if that is the case, but there were a few sessions where they could have taken the initiative to push for a result. Sri Lanka, though, will take it as even though they batted well, their bowling has looked a bit toothless in this Test. Although we all would like to see some more cricket in this match, the chances of that happening are looking very bleak now.

Ahh... ideally, we should have been giving you a warm welcome on return. But unfortunately, along with us, the rain has returned as well in Galle, and the covers are back on. Most of the ground is covered, and we know that the groundstaff here is excellent. However, for them to get into action, the showers need to stop. One would say that whatever we had written in the last para before the Lunch break, goes out of the window. Only one team can win from here, that is Bangladesh, if at all any, and that too, can come only if they get somewhere around 50-60 overs of play, to try and take 10 wickets. ... FINAL DAY, SESSION 2 ...

Sri Lanka have found it tough with the ball, creating very few opportunities throughout the session. The biggest surprise has been the ineffectiveness of Prabath Jayasuriya, who usually thrives at Galle but has struggled to make an impact this time. The rest of the bowling unit has also lacked penetration, and the hosts have largely been chasing the game. However, they did manage to break the stand just before the rain interruption, courtesy of a run out - one of the few bright moments for them. Heading into the next session, Sri Lanka will be hoping to build on that opening, while Bangladesh might look to accelerate, push the lead past 300, and give themselves a solid chance to bowl for victory. SESSION SUMMARY - 60 runs and 1 wicket in 19 overs! It was another Bangladesh-dominated session as the overnight pair continued from where they left off, batting with confidence and purpose. Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim built on their excellent stand, showing more intent and keeping the pressure on the Lankan bowlers. Shanto looked particularly assured and is unbeaten on 89, inching closer to a well-deserved century. However, just after the drinks break, with dark clouds gathering overhead, Rahim looked to rush to his fifty before the rain arrived but fell agonisingly short on 49. His dismissal broke a 109-run partnership, but the visitors remain in a strong position with a commanding lead of 247 runs.

UPDATE - 6.11 am GMT - With the amount of time needed to get the ground ready for action, the umpires have decided to take an EARLY LUNCH ON DAY 5! It will be from 6.20 am GMT to 7 am GMT with no overs being lost. This will give both sides plenty of time to regroup and plan how they want to approach the remainder of the game.

UPDATE - 5.55 am GMT - Positive news! The rain has stopped now and the covers are coming off too. It was indeed a passing shower, and the action should begin shortly.

Oh..no! While the run out check was in process, the drizzle has turned into heavy rainfall, and the covers are coming on quickly. The umpires give directions to the players, and they are coming off now. Sri Lanka will be a bit disappointed as they just got an opening and would have wanted to exploit it, but Bangladesh are ahead in the game with a lead of 247 runs with six wickets still in hand. PITCH REPORT - Russel Arnold is pitchside. He says a good wind is blowing across and the weather will hold up. Feels like a third day pitch, very dry and a lot of cracks. Shares Nayeem Hasan's lengths were a little shorter than the Sri Lankan spinners and he got the ball to dip and got more bounce on offer.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka can try and take wickets as quickly as possible and manage to keep Bangladesh under 250 which looks unrealistic at this point. However, the ball turned a lot as compared to other days and that would ignite some hope in the hosts dressing room as we are getting ready for the final day action. To be honest, draw looks the most picked out result at this point but anything can happen in Test cricket. Bangladesh have their skipper, Shanto in the middle, unbeaten on 56 so they won’t have to look too far for an idea as the man in the middle will answer most of the question in the first session only. It’s the visitors who are in front right now as we head into the final day, with a lead of 187 runs, it will be quite interesting to see if Bangladesh opt to get a result out of this game or they’ll be happy to secure a draw. We thought on Day 4 when Bangladesh were in a very comfortable position, they’ll start to launch and changed gears but instead they settled with a defensive approach, denying any chance for Sri Lanka to get back into the game. The ball is in Bangladesh’s court and how they approach the first session will tell a lot about the day.

Right then, that is it from a grinding Day 4, where both teams tried hard, but still the game has not moved, and at the moment, a draw is looking like the likeliest result unless any one of Sri Lanka or Bangladesh shows a bit more intent. The fifth and final day will start early to cover for the lost time, and a total of 98 overs are to be bowled. Shadman Islam and Najmul Hossain Shanto stood firm even as the ball started to grip and turn. They didn’t offer any chances to the Lankan bowlers, frustrating them with solid defence and patient accumulation. Their 68-run stand wore the bowlers down before Milan Rathnayake finally broke through, dismissing Islam on a well-made 76, providing the only real moment of joy for the hosts. However, Mushfiqur Rahim then joined in, survived a couple of nervy moments early on, and stitched together another promising partnership along with the skipper, who notched up a fifty as well, helping Bangladesh finish the day firmly on top.

The post-Lunch session brought a momentum swing in Bangladesh’s favour. Sri Lanka appeared well-placed to take the lead with Kamindu Mendis and Milan Rathnayake at the crease, but the hosts lost their grip as the pitch began to deteriorate. Nayeem Hasan provided the crucial breakthrough with a lovely flighted delivery to dismiss Kamindu for 83 and went on to complete a well-deserved five-wicket haul. Hasan Mahmud supported well, as Bangladesh cleaned up the last three wickets for just 15 runs, securing a narrow 10-run lead. In their second innings, Bangladesh approached positively, adding quick runs and stretching the lead to 75 by Tea. Despite losing Anamul Haque and Mominul Haque - both to spin, Sri Lanka couldn’t fully seize control, with Prabath Jayasuriya and Tharindu Rathnayake striking one each and Asitha Fernando threatening early on.

The opening session of the day was evenly poised, with both teams enjoying phases of control. Bangladesh made early inroads by dismissing Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis in quick time, but Sri Lanka steadied the ship through a crucial partnership between Kamindu Mendis and Milan Rathnayake. The pair added 79 unbeaten runs, with Kamindu looking assured on 83 at the Lunch break. Sri Lanka trimmed the deficit to just 30 runs by then, shifting the momentum slightly in their favour. Bangladesh might look back at that session as a missed opportunity, especially as the surface began to play a bit easier for the batters.

SESSION SUMMARY – 112 runs, 1 wicket in 35 overs! A hard-fought final session where both teams had to dig deep, but Bangladesh will be the happier side. They managed to lose just one wicket while adding valuable runs at a steady rate, stretching their lead to 187. The game is finely balanced, but the visitors have their noses slightly in front. If they score with intent in the first session on the final day, they could set a challenging target and then back their bowlers to push for a result.

There are still four sessions remaining in the Test match, but for either team to get a result, they need to show some approach that could give them a chance to win. We feel, Bangladesh could show some attacking approach as the game progresses but have to be wary of not getting caught against the Lankan spinners. A few quick wickets by Sri Lanka and they could get Bangladesh to do something vulnerable. Anything can happen in the last session. Stay tuned for the final session of the day.

So, Sri Lanka have done well to pick 2 wickets but Bangladesh have equally scored runs at a brisk rate and pushed the lead to 75. Asitha Fernando started the proceedings for Sri Lanka and went past the opener's edge numerous time but was taken out of the attack for the spinners to make most of the pitch which has started to show some assistance to the spinners.
