Commentary
We are back for the chase! The players are already out in the middle. Kamindu Mendis and Avishka Fernando are the two openers for Sri Lanka. Gus Atkinson will start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...
... THE RUN CHASE ...
Sri Lanka face mammoth target - With 430 required for victory, the onus is now firmly on Sri Lanka’s batting unit to produce something extraordinary and keep the contest alive. Can they rise to the challenge, or will England’s bowlers make light work of the contest? We’ll be back shortly with the second innings. Stay tuned.
Lankan bowling gets a beating - It was an afternoon to forget for Sri Lanka, who were taken apart all around the park. Dunith Wellalage and Asitha Fernando shared three wickets between them and were the pick of the bowlers, but the rest struggled to make an impact. The fifth bowler, in particular, proved costly as England piled on the runs.
Records galore in Pindi - The ball kept sailing over the ropes as England ran riot, registering the highest ODI total in Rawalpindi. Brook, meanwhile, became the fastest batter to score a double century in ODI cricket, capping off a remarkable innings as England’s batters made a mockery of the Sri Lankan bowling attack.
Brook’s stunning double ton steals the show - An outstanding double century from Harry Brook (202) has powered England to a mammoth 429/4 in their 50 overs. After being put in to bat, England got off to a solid start through Tom Banton (50) and Ben Duckett (29). Joe Root (69) then joined Brook to keep the runs flowing, with the duo adding 159 for the third wicket to lay a formidable foundation. Following Root’s departure, Will Jacks joined Brook and took the attack to the Sri Lankan bowlers. The pair stitched together a stunning 185-run stand for the fourth wicket, with Jacks remaining unbeaten on a blistering 66 off just 30 balls.

OUT! CAUGHT! Harry Brook has been dismissed on the final ball of the innings. England finish on a massive 429/4! Janith Liyanage bowls this full, outside off. Harry Brook extends his arms and tries to slice it away but does not get enough power on it. It flies towards deep third, where Sahan Arachchige takes a good catch. Brook walks off to a big round of applause and rightly so.
In the blockhole, on middle, Harry Brook jams it down the ground towards long on, where a fumble allows the second.
FOUR! DOUBLE HUNDRED FOR HARRY BROOK! Off 114 balls. This is the fastest double century in ODI history. Absolute domination from the English captain from start to finish, and this will go down as one of the best knocks in this format. Janith Liyanage tries the yorker, on middle, Brook shuffles across and gets low, takes it on the full and scoops it past the keeper to the fine leg fence for a boundary. Jacks on the other end starts celebrating before Brook follows and both share a hug.
Full again and on off, Harry Brook opens the bat face and squeezes it out towards deep third and hurries back for the second again. He moves to 196 now.
Fuller and and around off, Harry Brook drives it square towards deep point and hustles back for the second run.
SIX! Perfect start to the over! A leg-cutter, full and outside off. Harry Brook picks it up early, waits for it and carves it over the deep extra cover fence for a biggie. He moves into the 190s now.
Janith Liyanage will bowl the final over.

Commentary
Signing off from this cracking game - That brings us to the end of this absolute run-fest, with Sri Lanka pulling off a memorable win to get their Tri-Series campaign going. England, meanwhile, will have to wait for their first win in the series. The action continues on Sunday, 25th October, as hosts Pakistan take on England in the second round of matches. The game gets underway at 8 am GMT, so join us early for all the build-up. Until then, cheers and goodbye!
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - There were a lot of candidates for this one, but the award goes to Pavan Rathnayake for his incredible knock of 130 off 106 balls.
A tough pill to swallow - England made a promising start with the ball, as Josh Tongue produced a beauty to remove Kamindu Mendis before Gus Atkinson ran out the opposition skipper at the non-striker's end. However, things unravelled from there. Jamie Overton broke the first of the two massive partnerships, and Sam Curran dismissed Pavan Rathnayake to give England a glimmer of hope, but Dasun Shanaka and Janith Liyanage quickly snuffed it out. With 13 needed off 12 balls, Overton delivered an outstanding penultimate over, conceding just five runs. Tongue then took charge of the final over and started brilliantly, conceding just one run off the first three balls while dismissing two batters in consecutive deliveries. However, Liyanage regained the strike off the fourth ball and finished the job on the next, delivering a crushing blow to England's hopes.
England's batting firepower on full display - England had earlier launched a stunning assault to post the highest-ever ODI total in Pakistan, led by captain Harry Brook's magnificent double hundred, also the fastest in this format. Root played his part with a fine 69, sharing a 159-run stand with his skipper, while Banton added a good fifty up top before Jacks provided the late fireworks with 66 off just 30 balls. Dunith Wellalage was Sri Lanka's pick with a couple of wickets, while Asitha Fernando and Janith Liyanage chipped in with one each, though Liyanage was expensive and the rest of the attack also struggled to contain England's scoring.
Shanaka and Rathnayake turn the tide - Rathnayake continued to flourish, and the promotion of Dasun Shanaka proved a masterstroke as the pair smashed 133 runs off just 79 balls to set Sri Lanka up for a final assault. Rathnayake brought up a superb century but fell just two balls into Powerplay 3, leaving Shanaka with the responsibility of carrying the chase. He delivered with some exceptional hitting, combining with Janith Liyanage before falling agonisingly short of a hundred on 97. Liyanage kept the runs flowing, remaining unbeaten on 61 off just 27 balls, with Dunith Wellalage and Sahan Arachchige chipping in with crucial blows, before holding his nerve through a tense finish, sealing a stunning win with a towering six off the penultimate ball.
Sri Lanka recover after early blows - Chasing this record total, Sri Lanka were rocked early at 24/2, with skipper Mendis departing for a golden duck to add to their woes. However, Avishka Fernando showed tremendous composure and game awareness, keeping the chase alive with a steady flow of boundaries and excellent strike rotation. He found an ideal partner in Pavan Rathnayake, and the duo stitched together a massive 166-run stand to bring Sri Lanka back into the contest. Fernando looked set for a hundred but fell agonisingly short on 97, leaving the responsibility on his partner to carry on the fight.
A chase for the ages! Phew! That was some game of cricket, and we could all do with a breather after that! Not many would have backed Sri Lanka at the halfway mark, but that's the beauty of this game. The Lankans showed tremendous fight and determination to pull off a remarkable chase, joining South Africa and India as the only teams to successfully hunt down totals of over 400 in ODIs. They also bag two crucial points in the series, while England are left to rue a missed opportunity, having put up a mammoth 429 but still failing to get the job done.
SIX! Janith Liyanage finishes things off in style and becomes a hero forever. Sri Lanka win by 2 wickets, and this is the second-highest successful chase in ODI history. Josh Tongue goes for the slower one, serves this full and on off. Janith Liyanage waits for it, sets up a solid base and dispatches it over the long off fence for a biggie, sparking wild celebrations in the Lankan dugout.
No hat-trick! Back of a length and outside off, Asitha Fernando slashes and gets an outside edge towards deep third for a run. There is a fumble, but Janith Liyanage wants to keep the strike. 6 needed in 2 balls now.
Who will face the hat-trick ball? It will be Asitha Fernando.
OUT! TIMBER! Two in two for Josh Tongue, and England can believe again. This is full and on middle, angling in once again. Eshan Malinga tries to work it across the line but gets beaten by the pace on the ball as the ball clips his pads before rattling the stumps. Still 7 needed but in 3 balls.
A timely wicket for England. Eshan Malinga walks out to bat.
OUT! BOWLED'EM! Josh Tongue gets his second wicket but, more importantly, keeps Janith Liyanage at the other end. He goes full and on middle, angling in. Dunith Wellalage has an ugly hoick across the line but misses it completely as the ball crashes into the stumps. Sri Lanka need 7 runs in 4 balls now.
Pace off, back of a length and on middle, Janith Liyanage pulls it to deep mid-wicket for a single.
99 overs and we still don't know which team will win this game. Sri Lanka need 8 runs in the final over, and here is Josh Tongue ready to defend it.

HUNDRED FOR PAVAN RATHNAYAKE! A stunning knock, and he has kept Sri Lanka alive in this contest with his 2nd ODI ton. DRINKS! Sri Lanka are still very much in the chase, with Pavan Rathnayake nearing a ton, while Dasun Shanaka is showing his explosive hitting. They need 180 runs in 96 balls and in modern-day cricket, with wickets in hand, that is gettable. England will need to keep chipping in with wickets and cannot let this partnership flourish too much.

Dasun Shanaka looks for the pull shot but gets hurried as the ball crashes into the grill of the helmet and lobs behind, where Jordan Cox dives to his right to grab it with his outstretched right hand.

All in readiness now. The teams and the umpires make their way out to the ground. Ben Duckett and Tom Banton will open the batting for England. It will be Asitha Fernando with the new ball for Sri Lanka. We are moments away from the live action.
Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Kamindu Mendis, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis (C/WK), Pavan Rathnayake, Sahan Arachchige, Janith Liyanage, Dasun Shanaka, Dunith Wellalage (in place of Sachindu Colombage), Eshan Malinga, Asitha Fernando, Dilshan Madushanka.
England (Playing XI) - Ben Duckett, Tom Banton, Joe Root, Harry Brook (C), Jordan Cox (WK), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Liam Dawson (in for Adil Rashid), Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue (in place of Sonny Baker).
TOSS - Sri Lanka have won the toss and opted to BOWL.
Teams eye their valuable points - Sri Lanka have struggled against England in recent encounters and will be keen to turn the tide, while England will draw confidence from their recent series win over the Lankans. With both sides desperate to register their first win of the tri-series, an intriguing contest awaits. Who are you backing to come out on top? The toss and team news will follow shortly. Stay tuned.
Sri Lanka seek support from their batters - Sri Lanka, meanwhile, suffered a 37-run defeat against Pakistan in the tournament opener. Bowling first, they conceded 305 runs, although Asitha Fernando, Eshan Malinga, and Dilshan Madushanka had their moments with the ball. Kamindu Mendis provided a bright start in the chase, but Sri Lanka soon slipped to 91/4. Pavan Rathnayake (79) and Janith Liyanage (60) then fought back with valuable half-centuries, only for the lack of support from the lower order to prove costly as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 268.
England look to bounce back - England showed promise in patches during their opening game against Pakistan but allowed the hosts to recover and post 302 after reducing them to 133/5. Atkinson, Baker, Jacks, and Overton impressed with the ball, while Banton, Duckett, and Root provided a decent start in the chase. England were well placed at 165/3 before a dramatic collapse saw them bowled out for just 215 inside 40 overs, suffering an 87-run defeat. They will need to regroup quickly and deliver a more complete performance to get their campaign back on track.
Both teams look for their first win - Hello and welcome to our coverage of the ODI Tri-Series in Pakistan, 2026, featuring Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and England. In the third match of the tournament, England take on Sri Lanka at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Both teams are coming off defeats against Pakistan and will be eager to get their first points on the board.
…MATCHDAY…
Game 3 - The World Cup is bearing down, and every side is busy hunting for the right balance. Pakistan’s ODI tri-series has reached its halfway mark, with Sri Lanka taking on England in Rawalpindi in the last game of this leg before the action moves to Lahore. Both come in nursing the same bruise, a heavy defeat to the hosts after falling short in chases of slightly over 300, so there is plenty to put right. The double round-robin format means each team plays the other twice, which means a loss here can be avenged soon after. World Cup preps begin on a slippery note - A year out from the World Cup in South Africa, England are building a squad. That means finding the players who can deliver under pressure and moving on from those who cannot. Three straight ODI series wins have raised the bar, and falling short of 302 is nothing to be ashamed of. What will bother them is how they had the start they needed and then let it slip through brittle batting, which leaves plenty to think about. From 91/0, they were bowled out for 215, and not one middle order batter got past the thirties. The top order did not help either. Banton struck a wonderful hundred in the final ODI of the summer and looked in superb touch again in Rawalpindi, but he threw his head back knowing he had tossed away a chance to cement his place further. With Jos Buttler missing the tour of Pakistan and Australia next month, this was a golden chance for Jordan Cox. Instead, he put down two catches and could not turn a start with the bat into something substantial. Root looked good for his 33, a man who already has a hundred and a fifty in ODIs on Pakistan soil, and Sam Curran’s 27 had some polish too. Brook was a different story, left all at sea by a beauty of a turning delivery from Arafat. The common thread was starts squandered by several batters, and their glaring vulnerabilities against spin, losing six wickets to Arafat Minhas alone. England will want to fix that before their next assignment. Searching for the right mix - Without Jofra Archer, England’s attack did a decent job of squeezing the opposition for long stretches, then gave it all back by leaking runs at an alarming rate in the last ten overs or so. The unit does look a touch less menacing, though the squad still holds dangerous weapons in Gus Atkinson, Sam Curran and Jamie Overton. Young Sonny Baker was expensive in his first spell but fought back to finish with a three-for and could well retain his spot for now. However, Josh Tongue, who sat out against Pakistan, is expected to return to the XI and add more lethalness to the pace unit. In the spin department, Adil Rashid remains the primary weapon, with Will Jacks in the supporting role. Liam Dawson, vastly experienced, is waiting in the wings and could prove a million-dollar option in the subcontinental conditions. Banking on their sharpest weapons - Sri Lanka’s best chance in this contest sits where their strength meets England’s weakness. England lost most of their wickets to spin against Pakistan, and slow bowling is the most dangerous part of this Sri Lankan attack. Wellalage’s control, Colombage’s unorthodox leg-spin and Theekshana’s variations give them plenty of ways to squeeze England through the middle overs, more than Pakistan had. The catch is that Theekshana and Wellalage both sat out the last game, so the real question is who makes way and who gets the nod. The pace unit, though, did the damage last time. Eshan Malinga was the standout with a four-for, with Madushanka and Asitha Fernando also doing their bit, and that trio may carry the early load again before the spinners take over. Three questions before the Lankan batters - The first is who gets the innings off the ground. With Nissanka out and Asalanka dropped, the top of the order is the least settled part of the side. Avishka Fernando is back after a break and was gone early against Pakistan, and Lahiru Udara has never played an ODI. England’s pacers, who include Atkinson, Overton, Baker and Tongue, will aim at the start. Pakistan’s trio of Shaheen, Naseem and Faheem took the first four wickets before the 20th over, and Sri Lanka had barely recovered when the middle order took over. The second is whether Kusal Mendis can change gears. He is the best batter in the side and has a strong record against England, with 624 runs in 16 matches at 41.6 and a hundred at Headingley. Against Pakistan, though, he spent 34 balls on 18, and in a chase of 300 plus that kind of start leaves the rest scrambling. His value is in building a platform, but he has to turn it into pace by the 25th over, because the side loses its way when its anchor stays in anchor mode. The third is who finishes. Kamindu Mendis opened in the last game and is the most fluent stroke-maker, with a 44 against Pakistan and a 54 at Headingley. Rathnayake (79 off 74, then 48 off 39 at Headingley) and Liyanage (60 off 74) have shown they can build and hit. Shanaka is the experienced finisher, who holds the ability of turning matches on its head. The problem against Pakistan was that once Rathnayake and Liyanage fell, the last five wickets went for 15, so the finishing job is only half done. Team form (Last 5 completed ODIs, recent first) - SL - LLWLW | ENG - LWLWW. Which Lion will roar louder? England hold the edge in this rivalry, though not by much. They lead the ODI head-to-head 42-39, and the recent trend favours them, with a series win at home last month. That series had a scare in it, though. At Headingley, Sri Lanka defended 321 as England fell 16 runs short. At Rawalpindi, both teams have a bit of an underwhelming record in the ODIs. England have won just one out of five matches, with that win coming way back in 2005. At the same time, Sri Lanka have tasted a win in just two out of seven at this venue, having not won here since 2004, which was also in a tri-series back then. Let's see who comes out on top.

Nasty blow! Bangs this into the pitch, on middle, takes off a bit. Dunith Wellalage looks to pull but gets hurried and the ball hits him on his chest and drops on the pitch. Wellalage starts to run blindly but is sent back and in the process of getting back, his foot touches the ball, moving it away. Jamie Overton was running towards the ball and is complaining, but there is nothing there.
Buzzers! Hard length and on off, Dunith Wellalage opens the bat face and steers it towards deep third for a run. The throw comes in at the keeper's end, where Jordan Cox fails to collect it cleanly and allows a a second run.

Quicker, shortish and on off, Janith Liyanage presses forward but then moves back and guides it to backward point for one.
FOUR! FIFTY FOR LIYANAGE! Off just 21 balls. This is probably his most crucial knock yet, but he will want to finish the job for his team now. A low full toss, on middle, Janith Liyanage gets under it and bludgeons it back past the bowler for a boundary.
Flatter, full and on leg, Dunith Wellalage drills it to long on for a run.
A bit short, around off, Dunith Wellalage steers it to point.

OUT! TAKEN! Sam Curran has the last laugh here. He bowls a high full toss, on middle. Sahan Arachchige tries to slog it away but goes a bit to hard and mistimes it towards long on, where Will Jacks takes a good reverse cup catch. There is a check for a No Ball, but the replay shows that the ball was under the waist of the batter, who was also bending his back a bit. Sri Lanka are 406/6, chasing 430 runs.
FOUR! Not where he intended to hit, but he gets the result! Sam Curran sees the batter move across, lands this on a good length and on off. Sahan Arachchige looks to scoop it but it goes off the leading edge and flies over short third for four more runs.
