Commentary

Right then, it's a wrap from the penultimate ODI. Sri Lanka, the home side has comprehensively defeated India by 32 runs and has taken the lead by 1-0 in this 3-match ODI series, which means, they cannot lose the series now. A tremendous comeback by the Lankan Lions when the backs were against the wall. This is their first ODI win against India after a wait of three long years. For India, to save themselves from a series defeat, a win is a must in the last remaining game. They will be going back to the drawing board and analyzing where things went so wrong for them. This India's tour of Sri Lanka has offered nail-biting thrillers. The fans have been treated to sheer entertainment through and through. The final and 3rd ODI is scheduled to be played on August 7, Wednesday and the first ball will be bowled at 2.30 pm IST (9 am GMT). But please do join our pre-match build-up as well. Until then, cheers, and take care.

Charith Asalanka, the skipper of Sri Lanka is up for a chat. On being asked about whether 240 was enough, Asalanka says it was good enough. Says it's good to have Vandersay in the side again and feels it was an unbelievable spell from him. Smiles and says that he is happy to bowl a few overs for his side.

Rohit Sharma, the captain of India says that when you lose a game, everything hurts and you need to play consistent cricket in order to win and they failed to do that today. Adds that you need to adapt to what's in front and keep the left-right combination as it would be easy to rotate but Jeffrey Vandersay bowled well and the opposition was better than them. Mentions that he got 65 runs because of the way he batted and he isn't afraid of taking risks but there is always some disappointment when you get out. Adds that they knew the nature of the surface and how things were going to go, especially in the middle overs and hence, the intent in this first 10 overs has to be there.

Jeffrey Vandersay is adjudged as the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his match-winning spell of (10-0-33-6). He begins by saying that there was a lot of pressure coming into the side. Tells he was coming off a layoff and had to do something really special. Adds it is easy to take the credit but applaud the batters for playing the way they did and taking them to a good total. Also appreciates Wanindu Hasaranga by saying that he is the number one spinner. Says he had to keep motivating himself and tried to do the basics right. Further mentions that when he got his first wicket, it certainly built his confidence a lot. Ends up thanking God and walks with a broad smile.

The presentation ceremony...

Kamindu Mendis is down for a quick chat. He says that it was a good match and they did really well in all three departments. Adds that the skipper did his job and took excellent decisions. Mentions that he reckoned 210-215 would be a good score but they got 240 and his partnership with Dunith Wellalage was crucial. Adds that chances and half-chances in the field matter a lot which they were able to take and after the T20s, they had good plans which they executed as well.

Earlier in the game, Sri Lanka opted to bat first, despite the R. Premadasa Stadium's average first-innings score being a modest 225. They began cautiously after losing a wicket on the very first delivery. Avishka Fernando and Kusal Perera steadied the ship, building a solid 74-run partnership before both fell in quick succession, forcing Sri Lanka to rebuild once again. However, their middle order crumbled, repeating a familiar pattern after getting decent starts. The decision to include an extra batter down the order proved beneficial, as Wellalage and Kamindu Mendis weathered the storm admirably. Their valuable partnership of 71 for the 7th wicket and 32 for the 8th really saved them. India might be thinking that they conceded too many runs in the last 10 overs - 79 to be precise and couldn't get the tailenders cleaned up quickly.

Sri Lanka, missing their ace spinner Hasaranga, knew early breakthroughs were crucial. Despite the pitch offering grip and turn, they struggled to make inroads initially. Enter Jeffrey Vandersay, filling into Hasaranga's big shoes, who rose to the occasion spectacularly. The leggie turned the match on its head with a gutsy six-wicket haul, single-handedly dismantling and running through India's top and middle order. With momentum slightly slipping again, in comes Charith Asalanka and removes both the well-settled batters in his second spell and it was followed up by Vandersey cleaning up the tail effectively. Sri Lanka played to their skins and were shouldered by some exceptional fielding performances.

With their backs against the wall, India found a hero in Axar Patel, who was thrust into the pivotal number 5 position. The left-hander, partnering with the dependable Washington Sundar, arrested the fall of wickets and navigated the mid-phase adding 38 crucial runs together. The duo struck a fine balance between defense and attack, nudging the score along and keeping the fielding side on their toes. Just as it seemed they had weathered the storm, disaster struck again. Both Axar and Washington fell in quick succession, their dismissals separated by a mere 5 runs. This sudden turn of events breathed new life into the Sri Lankan camp, opening the door for another twist. With 50 odd runs still needed, runs came at a premium against the resurgent Sri Lankan attack. The Sri Lankan bowlers, sensing victory, tightened the screws, making every run a hard-fought affair for the Indian tail-enders.

On a tricky, slow surface, India recognized the importance of a solid platform and delivered just that. Gill and Rohit negotiated the powerplay with a mix of caution and calculated aggression, employing textbook percentage cricket. The skipper Rohit led the charge aggressively, while Gill played the perfect foil, rotating the strike and punishing the loose deliveries. The opening stand of 97 really put India way ahead in the game initially. However, cricket's unpredictable nature soon reared its head as the Men in Blue suffered a dramatic collapse, as the top and the middle order blew away in a flash. India found themselves slipping dramatically from a comfortable 97/1 to a precarious 147/6 in a matter of overs.

SRI LANKA HAVE DONE IT! THEY HAVE HUMBLED THE MEN IN BLUE WITH A TRUE FIGHTING SPIRIT! THEY TAKE THE LEAD BY 1-0. The 'Khettarama' erupts in pride and joy and completely contrasting emotions in the opposite camp. And as they say, it's not over until it's over, Sri Lankan bowlers especially the duo of Jeffrey Vandersay and Charith Asalanka completely decimated the Indian batting line up. The resilience shown by the home side in all three departments was truly commendable. Those handy contributions from Dunith Wellalage and Kamindu Mendis with the bat when the chips were down, helped Sri Lanka to post 240 and then a spirited fightback with the ball. What a game of cricket we have had at our disposal.

OUT! RUN OUT! That's it, Sri Lanka have won and they can't lose the series anymore. A bit of a pre-mature end and India will be gutted to lose the final wicket to a run out. Charith Asalanka bowls it quick and flat around off stump, cutting back in. Kuldeep Yadav stays on the back foot looking to cut but it is close to the body. The ball gets chopped back past the stumps and the keeper. Arshdeep Singh calls for the single but Kamindu Mendis at first slip is quick to get to the ball. He fires in a throw at the keeper's end and Kusal Mendis dislodges the bails. Sri Lanka WIN BY 32 RUNS!

42.11

Flatter one, on a length outside off and staying low, Arshdeep Singh flicks it away through the mid-wicket region and picks up a single.

OUT! LBW! TRAPPED IN FRONT AND SRI LANKA ARE ALL PUMPED UP AGAIN! Mohammed Siraj is down on his knees, disappointed but eventually goes for a review. Charith Asalanka darts in a fuller-length delivery, and flattens the trajectory. The ball considerably stays low and turns back sharply into the batter from outside off. Mohammed Siraj expecting the ball to bounce goes on the back foot to punch it to the leg side but gets deceived by the lack of bounce and plays it all over the line of the ball, and wears it low on his front pad. UltraEdge shows no bat involved and Ball Tracking confirms three reds. Sri Lanka just a solitary wicket from a tremendous win.

Commentary

We are all set for the chase to begin! The umpires are back out in the middle and so is the opening pair for India, skipper Rohit Sharma along with Shubman Gill. The lone seamer, Asitha Fernando will get proceedings underway with the ball. Let's play...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, last time around India needed 231 for the win and could only manage to tie the game and this time they need 10 runs more than the previous game for the win. The pitch is slow and it will certainly turn but with Sri Lanka playing just one pacer, the tide could shift either way quite quickly. It should be an engrossing watch. Join us in about half an hour's time for the run chase.

Washington Sundar, the star with the ball for India is up for a quick chat. He says that there's always some extra bounce when you play in Sri Lanka. Continues and says there was a good deviation for the spinners and mentions the pitch is comparatively slower than the first ODI. Feels they have done a decent job with the ball and says 240 is a good total to chase. Also reckons that it would have been better if they conceded 15-20 runs less in the backend but they will anyways take it.

Kamindu Mendis had other ideas though and went after the Indian pacers and with Akila Dananjaya providing ample support, Sri Lanka managed to get about 20 or so runs more than they should have. For India, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel bowled decent spells but the pair of Siraj and Arshdeep Singh was expensive at the death and simply couldn't uproot the tailenders. In the end, both teams would be fairly happy with that score at the interval.

The middle phase was dominated early by the spinners as Sri Lanka lost both their set batters in quick succession but batters in the middle order all got starts for the hosts and mustered up a few runs. Once again Sri Lanka lost two wickets in quick succession with Washington Sundar bowling a wonderful spell. Up stepped Dunith Wellalage once again and this time he had Kamindu Mendis for company as well. The pair added 72 invaluable runs before Wellalage was eventually dismissed and India had a chance to wrap things up.

After opting to bat first, Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka on the very first delivery of the game as Mohammed Siraj bowled a jaffa of a delivery. The Lankans hit back though with Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis stitching together a confident stand of 74 runs. The Indian spinners soon started to get their feet into the game though and Fernando fell on the brink of the first drinks break.

They say history repeats itself but it seems to repeat itself right away as well. Just a couple of days ago we saw almost a replica of how this first innings has panned out and hosts, Sri Lanka have fought back hard to get to runs. India won't be displeased though but will feel they gave away a few extra runs in the death overs and will be eager to get it down with the bat this time around.

OUT! RUN OUT! Virat Kohli, the live wire in the field does the job! Length-delivery on the leg stump line. Jeffrey Vandersay drills it to mid off. The fielder Rohit Sharma misses the direct hit at the non-striker's end. The ball rolls to the leg side and Kohli at mid-wicket backs up the throw and runs at the striker's end seizing the opportunity as the batter is well away from the crease trying to complete the single. He scores a brilliant run out. Rohit Sharma is all smiles. Sri Lanka finish at 240 on the board, 10 runs more from the previous game.

Jeffrey Vandersay comes in to bat now.

49.51W

OUT! RUN OUT! BULL'S EYE! Arshdeep bangs it short and on the off and middle, Kamindu Mendis pulls it towards deep mid-wicket. Shreyas Iyer runs in quickly, picks the ball up and rocket-arms towards the striker's end as the batters attempt to cross for two. One peg to aim at and Iyer scores a direct hit from the deep. Kamindu Mendis is well outside the crease. OUT.

49.40

Arshdeep goes full throttle and slips another waist height full toss on the pads. Kamindu shuffles to the off side to pull it away to the leg side but the ball gets heavy on him. Brushes off his gloves and reaches the keeper. However, the umpire gives it as a wide and Rohit Sharma immediately reviews this one, but for LBW. UltraEdge shows that the ball indeed brushed off his glove. A human error corrected by the technology. A fair delivery then.

Rohit Sharma has taken the DRS for an LBW appeal. It seemed like there was gloved involved and the third umpire confirms the same on UltraEdge. NOT OUT!

49.34

FOUR! Kamindu Mendis makes the most out of it. Another friendly full toss, but outside off this time by Arshdeep Singh, Kamindu Mendis sits on his knee and slashes it over backward point for a boundary.

49.21

Arshdeep Singh overcooks the yorker and slips in a thigh-height full toss on the pads, Akila Dananjaya works it to deep mid-wicket for a single.

49.11

Arshdeep spears in a yorker tailing on middle, Kamindu Mendis inside edges it to deep square leg for a single.

48.54

FOUR! This is hit better than the previous one! Slower length-delivery into the pitch, around off, Akila Dananjaya is deep in the crease and spanks it downtown for a boundary.

In the air...lands safe! Short and angling on off, Akila Dananjaya plays the tennis forehand slap aerially toward the left of long on for a brace.

48.24

FOUR! Kamindu Mendis has played a gem of an inning here for his team! He keeps accumulating timely boundaries! Not an ideal length from Siraj with the mid off inside the ring. Slower off cutter, short and on off, Kamindu Mendis moves leg side of the ball to open the off side. Sees the fielder in the circle and lofts it over mid off for a boundary.

Siraj charges in from around the wicket, lands it full and outside off, Akila Dananjaya slashes it towards deep point for a single.

Arshdeep angles it on the pads, with a gentle inswing on a length. Akila Dananjaya closes the bat's face early and wears it high on the thigh pad before the ball rolls in front of the point fielder. They cross for a leg bye.

OUT! LBW! Not sure what the initial appeal from the Lankans was for but Washington Sundar is out LBW and Sri Lanka rejoice. Charith Asalanka angles the ball in on a slightly fuller length and drops it on off stump, Sundar looks to push it off the front foot but is beaten past the inside edge and the ball just flicks the back leg before going into the mitts of the keeper. There is an appeal and eventually, the finger does go up. Sundar refers it and there's no spike on UltraEdge but Ball Tracking comes up with three reds. The Lankan skipper is at it again!

Has he nicked it? Another appeal for LBW and the decision is sent upstairs by Washington Sundar as the umpire raises his finger. Looks pretty straight. Flat line on UltraEdge. Ball Tracker follows, and shows that the impact is in line and it is hitting the leg stump. Washington Sundar will have to depart now. OUT! LBW! A big appeal for LBW but 'No' says the umpire. Jeffrey Vandersay is very excited and they do go upstairs. Jeffrey Vandersay dishes out the conventional leg spinner on the fuller length. It straightens up instead of turning away. Shreyas Iyer is drawn forward as he anticipates the ball to turn and plays over the line of the ball and wears it on the pads. UltraEdge shows no bat involved and the Ball Tracker comes up with three reds. The on-field decision is overturned and Shreyas Iyer will have to depart here. Jeffrey Vandersay has snagged the first 5-fer of his ODI career. Remember, he is filling in the big shoes of Hasaranga. What a spectacular fightback this has been from Sri Lanka! India are still 108 runs away but they have now lost half of the side.

OUT! LBW! Jeffrey Vandersay is picking the bones out of this Indian batting order and this time, Virat Kohli surely has to walk back. Looked like another wrong'un from Vandersay and he bowls this one a bit slower and fuller on the stumps, sliding it back into the right-hander. OUT! LBW! Drinks! Well, India has looked well and truly in command here so far. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, both have provided a strong foundation into the chase. Rohit scored a fantastic quickfire 62 before perishing. Also, with dew settling in now, the tweakers are finding it a bit tricky to grip the ball. However, Jeffrey Vandersay in particular, has looked impressive as he is filling up the big shoes of Hasaranga. Sri Lanka need wickets in quick succession to break the momentum.

OUT! RUN OUT!

NOT OUT!

Halt! Ouch! That must have hurt! Kusal Mendis is seen limping right after playing the pull shot. He looks in pain out there, losing his balance and twisting his left ankle. The physio is out, and the magic spray is being applied to that area. And as always, the magic spray does the trick. Kusal Mendis is up on his feet and ready to continue.

6.30

Nissanka with a tentative attempt at the block and the outside edge is found. KL Rahul dives to his right behind the stumps and takes a good low catch. Siraj with his tail up here!

All in readiness for the 2nd ODI to get underway at the iconic R. Premadasa! It's a warm sunny afternoon in Colombo with a warm breeze blowing across the park. The two umpires are out to the middle. Indian players make their last-minute strategies in a huddle near the ropes before scattering to the field. Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando are the two openers for Sri Lanka. For India, Mohammed Siraj has the new ball and will open the attack. And, here we go...

Shivam Dube is up for a flash interview. He says it feels great to be back in the side. Adds he first played in 2019 and then got an opportunity now so he aims to make the most out of it. Continues and says that they lost a few quick wickets in the first match, and that they didn't lose the game but tied it. On his bowling he says he looks to bowl regularly and is working on it.

Rohit Sharma, the captain of India says that they know what to expect while chasing so it is fine and hopefully, they have a good game. Adds that you cannot always play the same way and need to adjust according to the conditions and adapt quickly. Mentions that they want to play freely and stay in the present. Adds that they are going in with the same team and says that it was a fair result in the last game as both sides dominated in different phases of the game.

Charith Asalanka, the skipper of Sri Lanka says that they will bat first and adds that the pitch looks pretty same as the previous game. Adds he doesn't want many changes as a skipper. Informs Wanindu Hasaranga is ruled out and Jeffrey Vandersay comes in. Another change as Kamindu Mendis comes in place of Mohamed Shiraz.

India (Unchanged XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Washington Sundar, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis (WK), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka (C), Kamindu Mendis (In for Mohamed Shiraz), Janith Liyanage, Dunith Wellalage, Akila Dananjaya, Asitha Fernando, Jeffrey Vandersay (In for Wanindu Hasaranga).

TOSS - The flip of the coin lands in favor of Sri Lanka and they have elected to BAT first.

We are a couple of minutes away from the toss and the big news from the Lankan camp is that Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury. Sri Lanka have named Jeffrey Vandersay as his replacement and this could be a factor as Hasaranga is their lead spinner.

PITCH REPORT - Russel Arnold is pitchside. He says that it is a warm afternoon and it is 76 meters down the ground with 65 meters and 66 meters on either side of the square. Adds that the pitch is quite dry and similar to the pitch that was used in the first ODI. Mentions that there will be some crumbling and won't be much movement for the pacers. Reckons that the batters need to recognize how and when to accelerate.

It hasn't been the best of times for the Lankan Lions against India when it comes to playing ODI cricket at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo but they did manage a win a little over 3 years ago and with that last outing, the home side will believe that they have a real chance of going ahead in the series. India on the other hand will be eager to improve upon their last two showing in the Island nation and will look for a much more convincing performance. The visuals show that the clouds have cleared out and the Sun is shining as well in Colombo. Stay tuned as toss and team news aren't far away.

India on the other hand will be slightly underwhelmed with their batting performance as they had a solid outing with the ball and the spinners ruled the roost as they have on so many occasions in such conditions. The likes of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returned to the fore as well and the former made a fine half century but Kohli along with that middle order couldn't quite get going as Axar Patel and KL Rahul too got out after getting starts. Shivam Dube impressed with the ball and almost took his side home with the bat as well but it wasn't meant to be and India will be looking to hit back hard.

Sri Lanka might have been swept in the three-match T20I series leading up to the ODIs but there were signs that they could definitely beat the Asian powerhouse that is India and almost pulled off a stellar win in the first ODI. Dunith Wellalage ran the show for the hosts with his thunderous batting and then his smart bowling too. The hosts were on the verge of a loss and skipper Charith Asalanka took matters into his own hands and with the scores level, he managed to pick up the remaining two Indian wickets and sent the whole crowd into a frenzy.

Hello and welcome to RPS Colombo aka 'the Khettarama,' where Sri Lanka and India will go up against each other in the 2nd ODI of this three-match bilateral series. With the first game ending up in an entertaining tie, both sides will be eager to get the win and take the lead heading into the final game. The weather does predict a couple of early showers but should clear out as the day goes on and we should get a full game in.

... MATCH DAY ...

The India-Sri Lanka series has been a cracker, delivering edge-of-the-seat action that's only intensifying as we approach the business end. With the penultimate match on the horizon, it's all at a stalemate after a dramatic tie in the first ODI - a rarity in the 50-over format. Sure, you all must have chewed up all your nails in the first ODI that went down to the wire. It was a throwback to the golden era of 50-over cricket, reminiscent of the late 90s and early 2000s. It was a classic slugfest that would have cricket purists purring with delight. Gone were the modern-day expectations of 300-plus totals and batters dominating throughout. Instead, we were treated to a good old-fashioned dogfight, with Sri Lanka scrapping their way to a modest 230-odd total before digging deep to defend it with every ounce of their resolve. This match was a refreshing reminder of the tactical chess that once defined ODI cricket. It was all about building innings patiently, valuing wickets, and then unleashing a bowling attack with a never-say-die attitude. The spin quartet's stranglehold on the Indian batting lineup marked back to the days when spinners were often the game-changers in the subcontinent. For many seasoned observers, this felt like a return to the 'standard operating procedure' of yesteryears - a low-scoring thriller where every run was fought for and every wicket celebrated like gold dust. It was a stark contrast to the run-fests we've become accustomed to, proving that there's still room for the 'old school' approach in modern-day ODI cricket. While the Lankans may have stumbled in the T20Is and their batting has been hit-and-miss through and through, their bowling attack came to the party in style even in the first ODI. The spin quartet of Akila, Hasaranga, Wellalage, and Asalanka have been particularly impressive, weaving a web around the Indian batters and proving instrumental in snatching that unlikely tie after putting up a sub-par total on the board. But that's yesterday's news. As we look ahead to the second ODI, Sri Lanka's batting woes loom large like dark clouds over Colombo. It's been a case of too many passengers and not enough drivers in their batting lineup. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis have been carrying the batting burden. Charith Asalanka the usual southpaw with the bat, has traded his heroics with the ball, but, the team would expect him to cover the lapses with the bat as well. Dunith Wellalage has been impressive with the bat as well - his contribution of 67 runs really bailed Sri Lanka out of a precarious position and he has also given positive returns with the ball. All in all, if Sri Lankan batting overcomes struggles, they are really a side to beat. On the other hand, Indian batting has been reinforced with seniors Rohit, Kohli and KL Rahul who will play a pivotal role in holding the top and middle order along with others like they did. However, the finishers need to up their game and finish the job responsibly. The Indian think tank now faces some delicious selection dilemmas. With game-changers like Rishabh Pant and Riyan Parag warming the bench, there's a possibility of a shake-up in the playing XI. Who makes way, if at all, will be a topic of hot debate in cricketing circles. While the bowling looks sorted out with almost everyone chipping in with crucial scalps. Even on days when one bowler might be having an off day, others have stepped up to maintain the pressure. As we head into the second ODI, both teams have their tasks cut out. Sri Lanka will be looking to build on their spirited performance, while India will be eager to flex their batting muscle and level the series. It's all set up for another cracking contest in this enthralling subcontinental battle at the iconic R. Premadasa!
