Commentary

That is all from this game. The places have been filled for the Super Eights but we still have a couple of games to go from the group stages. New Zealand will face Papua New Guinea on the 17th of this month. Join us at 8 pm IST (2.30 pm GMT) and earlier for the build-up. Till then, cheers!

Wanindu Hasaranga, the skipper of Sri Lanka says that after the first two defeats, this win is healthy for them. Adds that they saw that the wicket was good last night and thought that anything above 160, they could defend. Tells that losing a lot of wickets in clusters cost them a lot. Praises Asalanka and says that he has a lot of talent and showed what he can do for the team. Ends by saying that Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva also played key roles in this game.

Scott Edwards, the skipper of Netherlands says the wicket was better than what they have been playing on in other grounds. Adds they didn't execute the plans though and credits the way Sri Lanka batted. Tells they were slow to react and use the longer side of the fence. Feels against a good quality side, they can't afford to be lost for even a small period. Mentions they wanted one of the batters to have big contributions but it didn't happen.

Charith Asalanka wins the Player of the Match award. He says that the conditions are far better here than USA. Adds that he and the other batters enjoyed playing here. Mentions that it is tough to come in at number 5 and he tries play according to the conditions and situation. Says that he still needs to improve and be more consistent. Ends by saying that they are a bit disappointed with the first two results but it feels good to finish with a win.

...Presentation next...

Wanindu Hasaranga did said at the toss that the batters need to step up and boy they did, all of them made some crucial contributions. The surface was perfect to bat on and Sri Lanka showed a lot of character right till the last ball. In the second innings, the first six overs didn't go the Lankans' way but they bowled well throughout, took regular wickets to win by a big margin. Nuwan Thushara was the pick of the bowlers as he took three wickets while Wanindu Hasaranga and Matheesha Pathirana took two each.

Netherlands were 47/2 inside the Powerplay, they were going strong but the news came in about their qualification chances and all of a sudden, they lost 5 wickets in 5 overs. Scott Edwards was there for a long period of time but Netherlands never showed any intent to chase down this humongous total. On the other hand, this was the best performance by Sri Lanka in this tournament. Proper all-round performance from them but it came a little too late as they had nothing but to play for pride.

A convincing win in the end for Sri Lanka! The eyes were on Netherlands though at the start of the game. They came on the ground with a purpose but when it mattered the most, they succumbed under pressure. The bowling group mainly didn't execute their plans. Netherlands were ordinary with the ball throughout the innings. They allowed a couple of big partnerships to build on to make things worse for them. With the bat, the openers started well, Michael Levitt particularly showed a lot of intent but Sri Lanka knew they were a couple of wickets away from dominating the game.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The players are making their way out to the middle now. Michael Levitt and Max O'Dowd are the two openers for Netherlands. Angelo Mathews to start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Netherlands, on the other hand, will be disappointed with their bowling effort. Vivian Kingma set the tone with a wicket in the first over. However, they allowed a couple of big partnerships in the middle that gave the Lankan batters time to settle in and then go on the attack. The death bowling was pretty ordinary as well and they just looked under pressure in a crucial match. Logan van Beek picked up a couple of wickets and both came in the same ever. Except for Bas de Leede, everyone else chipped in with one each.

Sybrand Engelbrecht is up for a quick chat. He says it looks like a good pitch to bat on. Sri Lanka constructed their innings well and they should learn from it. Tells that it is a huge score and the odds are against them, but they need to bat well to chase the total down.

Despite losing a couple of wickets early on, Sri Lanka kept scoring at a good rate with Mendis leading the charge and Dhananjaya de Silva playing second fiddle. The former just missed out on his half-century and then the Lankans decided to change gears. DDS and Charith Asalanka forged up a good partnership to set up a solid platform. DDS fell, but Asalanka enjoyed himself smashing 46 off just 21 balls. After his dismissal, Angelo Mathews and Wanindu Hasaranga finished with a flurry to register their second-highest T20 World Cup total.

SRI LANKA BREACH THE 200-RUN MARK! This is the highest T20I total at this ground and also the highest the Dutch have conceded in a T20 World Cup game. Netherlands would have hoped for a much lower total, but they have to bat their hearts out and chase this down as quickly as possible to keep their hopes alive.

Time for Cricket to unfold now. The Dutch players are out in the middle. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis to open for the Lankans. Vivian Kingma to bowl first. Let's go...

We are all set for action but first, it is time for the national anthems of both the respective teams. It will be the Netherlands' first followed by Sri Lanka's.

PITCH REPORT - Lisa Sthalekar is pitchside. She says that there is no threat of rain and the conditions are great for a cricket game. Adds that the wind will play a big factor and the shortest boundary is 63 meters which is behind the wicket. Ian Bishop joins her and says that it looks a bit dry and there might be a bit of turn as well. Says that the batters can use the wind to their advantage but the bowlers will also be in the game here.

The captain of Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga says they would have bowled first as well. Informs they are playing the same team. Tells they didn't do the job with the bat but today is another opportunity and hopes they bat well.

Scott Edwards, the skipper of Netherlands says that they will bowl first. Adds that the wicket looks good and they hope to restrict their opponents and then chase it down. Tells that their first priority is to win this game and will not focus much on the other results. Mentions that they have a bit of ritual before toss when the touring guys share a few words with the team. Says that they have played some good cricket in this tournament but haven't been able to win the crunch moments which will be crucial in this game. Informs they have made no changes.

Sri Lanka (Unchanged Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (WK), Kamindu Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Angelo Mathews, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga (C), Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara.

Netherlands (Unhanged Playing XI) - Michael Levitt, Max O'Dowd, Vikramjit Singh, Sybrand Engelbrecht, Scott Edwards (C/WK), Bas de Leede, Logan van Beek, Tim Pringle, Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren, Vivian Kingma.

TOSS - Netherlands have won the toss and will BOWL first.

The Netherlands, on the other hand, are still in contention for qualification to the next round, but their fate isn't entirely in their hands. The Dutch need to win this game by a large margin and hope that Bangladesh suffers a heavy defeat against Nepal. However, skipper Scott Edwards will want to focus on what they can control and ensure his team performs well. The opening pair will be crucial for them, while Sybrand Engelbrecht has been very consistent and almost led them to victory against Bangladesh. Their bowling attack is solid, featuring many quality pacers, while Tim Pringle and Aryan Dutt can trouble batters with their spin. Even if they don't make it to the next round, they will want to finish on a high. Stay tuned for the toss and other updates.

Sri Lanka have been quite disappointing in this World Cup and are already knocked out of the competition. Their batting has been a major letdown, and having their game against Nepal washed out didn't help their cause. Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, and Charith Asalanka have all underperformed, while Angelo Mathews has also failed to make a significant impact. The only bright spot has been their bowling, with skipper Wanindu Hasaranga leading the spin attack alongside Maheesh Theekshana. Matheesha Pathirana and Nuwan Thushara have also performed well. The Lankans will be looking to put on a better show here and finish their campaign on a positive note.

Hello and welcome to our coverage of the match between the Netherlands and Sri Lanka. With seven of the eight teams for the Super-8 stages already confirmed, this game could be pivotal in determining the final team to advance to the next round.

... MATCH DAY ...

Match 38 of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 is poised to feature between Sri Lanka and the Netherlands. The Sri Lankan team, despite being eliminated from the tournament, is set to compete in this fixture with the sole intent of upholding their pride on this global stage. Conversely, the Netherlands team finds themselves teetering on the verge of elimination following back-to-back defeats. Their path to the Super 8 stage hinges heavily on securing a substantial victory against Sri Lanka while relying on favorable outcomes from other matches. The Netherlands suffered a disappointing loss to Bangladesh despite being in a good position during the chase. Their chances now of making it into Super 8 are very low. Sybrand Engelbrecht, Max O'Dowd, and Vikramjit Singh have been key batsmen, while Logan van Beek, Tim Pringle, and Paul van Meekeren have been standout bowlers for the team. They will look to bring their A game and try to win big. Sri Lanka's early exit from the T20 World Cup stems from a lackluster performance by their batters, with Pathum Nissanka and Angelo Mathews being the only notable contributors so far. The team still eagerly waits for a strong showing from Kusal Mendis. On the bowling front, captain Wanindu Hasaranga has been impressive with 4 wickets, while Nuwan Thushara's standout performance against Bangladesh showcased his potential. Sri Lanka will hope for an improved batting display and impactful bowling spells and look to end their campaign with their heads held high.
