Commentary

Right then, that is it from this rain-curtailed game. Sri Lanka takes the early lead in the series with a good all-round effort. The hosts will look to seal the series in the next one while the Kiwis will want to level things up. The 2nd ODI will be played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on 17th November, Sunday. It will begin at 9 am GMT, but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up to the match. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Charith Asalanka, the victorious skipper of Sri Lanka says they had a chat in the drinks break and decided to bowl a few tight overs and the boys responded perfectly. Adds that with the ball being wet, it was difficult but the bowlers bowled really well. On the toss, he says he wanted to bat first because it looked like a wicket that suited batting and appreciates the way Kusal and Avishka batted. Mentions that they were short of a bowler at the start and his plan was to bring himself on when a new batter came into bat.

Mitchell Santner, the captain of New Zealand says that he is disappointed by the team's performance, and losing wickets in cluster never helps. Adds Maheesh Theekshana bowled pretty well and the rain and dew played a big factor as well. Says that there are a lot of learnings to take from this game and after that excellent opening partnership, they should have done better. Ends by saying that they will come back stronger in the next one.

Kusal Mendis is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his fantastic hundred (143 runs off 128 balls) which is also the highest individual score for a Lankan batter against New Zealand in ODIs. He says that Pathum Nissanka got out early so he and Avishka Fernando built up a good partnership. Adds that the wicket was on the slower side, some balls turned and some came straight. Mentions that the plan was to keep things simple in the middle overs and his approach has always been to attack the bowlers and put them under pressure early on.

Presentation Time...

Maheesh Theekshana is in for a chat. He says he was at the right spot at the right time and that crucial catch just stuck. Adds that they kept things simple and knew they needed one breakthrough to get a few more. Mentions that it was tough but the bowling department did extremely well. Appreciates Charith Asalanka and says he is a batter and knows what the players plan for and bowled really well.

Earlier, Sri Lanka put up an impressive total in a rain-affected innings, shortened by four balls. Centurions Mendis and Avishka led the way, building a remarkable 206-run partnership - the highest for Sri Lanka against New Zealand for any wicket in ODIs. Duffy stood out among the bowlers with three wickets, while Bracewell and Sodhi claimed one apiece. Despite a prolonged rain delay that cost valuable overs, the ground staff moved quickly to get the field ready as soon as the rain let up. The revised target for the Kiwis being set at 221 runs in 27 overs.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, were on the back foot for the first half of the chase but bounced back impressively after the drinks break. Initially, their pacers struggled, and the team’s body language dipped. However, whatever skipper Asalanka said during the break clearly worked. Theekshana came on and removed both openers in the same over, sparking a shift in momentum. The captain himself contributed with a couple of crucial wickets, turning the game in Sri Lanka's favor, while Vandersay chipped in with one. Dilshan Madushanka ended up with three wickets wrapping up a fantastic performance.

New Zealand got off to a flying start, with Young taking on the role of aggressor while debutant Tim Robinson played a supporting hand. They were comfortably placed at 88/0 after 13 overs, but the drinks break broke their momentum and marked the beginning of their downfall. Both openers fell in the same over, and, in no time, they found themselves struggling at 110/5. From a promising position in the chase, they ended up in trouble due to a lack of patience and some reckless shot selection. Michael Bracewell did show up some fight with a knock of 34 off 32, but with no support from others it was never going to be enough.

SRI LANKA TAKES A 1-0 LEAD IN THE SERIES! With this win, the hosts extend their incredible home record in ODIs losing just once in the last 7 games! This victory was really set up by the twin hundreds from Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando. However, the bowling came under a bit of pressure after the chase was reduced to 27 overs, but they held their nerves well and struck at the crucial moments to seal the win.

Commentary

We are back with New Zealand's reply! The umpires and players make their way out to the middle. Tim Robinson and Will Young are the openers for New Zealand! Asitha Fernando is handed the new ball and will start the proceedings for Sri Lanka! Away we go!

... THE RUN CHASE ...

The pitch offered no surprises, proving to be a paradise for the batters. With the downpour giving New Zealand a bit of a lifeline, they'll be eager to capitalize on the revised target ahead. As the conditions continue to favour the batters, the pitch is only expected to improve, and with the ball becoming harder to grip, Sri Lanka’s bowlers will need to be at their very best to defend this adjusted total. An electrifying finish is in store, so don’t go anywhere, the action is just moments away!

Just as New Zealand seemed to regain control, Charith Asalanka and Mendis struck a quick 53-run partnership, restoring Sri Lanka's momentum. Mendis eventually fell for a brilliant 143 off 128 balls, but Asalanka pressed on, boosting the total to 324/5 before rain interrupted. Jacob Duffy was a bright spot for New Zealand with three crucial wickets.

The Kiwi bowlers struggled to maintain pressure, appearing inconsistent and occasionally complacent, which allowed Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando to dominate effortlessly. Fielding lapses added to captain Mitchell Santner's frustration, with no bowling changes seeming to work. Both batters capitalized, each reaching centuries in a massive 206-run stand before Ish Sodhi finally dismissed Avishka. Michael Bracewell followed up by removing Sadeera Samarawickrama cheaply, offering some respite.

To recap the first innings, Sri Lanka delivered a commanding batting performance, closing their innings at 324/5 before rain cut things short with just four balls left. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka got off to a promising start but faced an early hiccup when Pathum Nissanka was dismissed in the third over, despite a couple of elegant boundaries off Jacob Duffy. Avishka Fernando took time to find his footing, but Kusal Mendis stepped in with clarity and aggression, playing freely and relieving the mounting pressure. Once Avishka found his groove, the duo clicked beautifully, capitalizing on every loose delivery and crafting a partnership that stabilized the innings after the initial setback. Their solid partnership not only stabilized Sri Lanka after the early loss but also laid a strong foundation for a potential flourish in the final overs.

UPDATE - Finally, we have a restart time! The official word is in and we will resume at 3.40 pm GMT. The revised target for New Zealand will be 221 runs in 27 overs. Powerplay 1 will last for the first 6 overs, followed by Powerplay 2 until the 22nd over. Two bowlers are permitted to bowl a maximum of 6 overs each.

UPDATE - 3.23 pm GMT - The rain has stopped again in Dambulla. Hopefully, this time it will stay away so that we can see some more cricket. The ground staff have removed the covers and the umpires are out there for an inspection. We can safely say that even if we start now, we will have a shortened chase for New Zealand and we will know about the revised target pretty soon.

UPDATE - 3.04 pm GMT - Not the update we were hoping for! Just as the covers were being peeled back, the drizzle decided to make an untimely return, forcing the ground staff to spring into action once more. And so, the waiting game stretches on.

UPDATE - 2.49 pm GMT - Some positive news! It looks like the rain has stopped now and the covers are coming off too. We know that the ground staff here are excellent and they can prepare the ground pretty quickly barring further rain. However, we are still waiting for any official word on whether Sri Lanka will bat again or New Zealand will come out directly for the chase. Stick with us for more news!

UPDATE - 2.30 pm GMT - The waiting game drags on! With the time already lost, it's almost certain that once the rain clears, we'll be in for a shortened game. Could Sri Lanka’s decision to bat first come back to haunt them? Despite the uncertainty, they've posted a solid total, and now it’ll be up to New Zealand to bat out of their skins to stay on top of the equation considering rain as a factor.

UPDATE - 2.02 pm GMT - Still nothing new to update about. The weather forecast does not look good at the moment but we still have plenty of time to get some action and a result in this game. Meanwhile, the 3rd T20I between South Africa and India will begin in a short while with the four-match series level at 1-1. So, while we wait here, you can just switch tabs to enjoy all the build-up to that game.

UPDATE - 1.35 pm GMT - Unfortunately, the rain continues to fall persistently, and with the entire outfield now covered, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that we will see Sri Lanka bat again. It looks like the delay could extend for some time, and we might be heading towards a shortened game. If that’s the case, it could very well work in New Zealand's favour, as a reduced target might give them a better chance to chase while also making batting a bit easier. All said, we still await any official confirmation! Stay with us for any further updates on the situation.

Uh oh! The drizzle has intensified, and with just 4 balls left in the innings, the umpires have decided to call for the covers. The players are now off the field as the rain begins to make things tricky. We’ll have to wait and see how quickly the weather clears up and if the final few balls can be bowled. Stay tuned for further updates!

OUT! TAKEN! Jacob Duffy has three now! Jacob Duffy bangs this short and around off, Charith Asalanka hops up to pull it away but fails to get on top of the bounce. He gets a bit of a top edge as the ball goes high in the air towards deep square leg where Will Young runs forward and takes a good sliding catch. He makes up for his error in the previous over. Asalanka goes back after a fiery 40 off just 28 balls and Sri Lanka are 324/5 now!

49.11

Fuller and around off, Janith Liyanage slogs it towards long on for a single. There is a bit of drizzle around now and the ground staff are ready with the covers to come in if it gets heavier.

A good knock from the debutant but the 88-run opening stand is finally broken.

Is that out? A stumping chance and Maheesh Theekshana is confident but the keeper is the least excited! The replays show that Tim Robinson is way down the crease and that fumble from Kusal Mendis doesn't matter because he has nicked the bails off in a flash.

Drinks! With both Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando well set and a strong foundation in place, it seems Sri Lanka will be ready to shift gears soon. New Zealand's bowlers have tried a variety of strategies but have been unable to find the much-needed breakthrough. As Sri Lanka prepares to accelerate, the Kiwis must find a way to halt the run flow, likely their best chance to pick up wickets as the batters take greater risks. The next few overs could be pivotal, and New Zealand will need sharp fielding and disciplined bowling to make an impact while the hosts will just want to carry on.

Duffy hits the deck hard, on a short of a length, outside off, Pathum Nissanka reads the length early and decides to ramp it over the keeper. He doesn't get it quite right and skies it wider of the fielder at deep third to his right. Nathan Smith is very quick across the turf and times his jump to perfection, grabbing the ball from over the ropes with both hands and balancing himself well to stay within the ropes.

Great news! Just as quickly as it arrived, the rain has eased off. The groundstaff have done a commendable job and we are all set to resume the game with no overs lost. Pathum Nissanka and Asitha Fernando are ready to continue the batting for Sri Lanka. Jacob Duffy to finish his incomplete over. Here we go...

UPDATE - 9.29 am GMT - There’s no positive news from our previous update. Most of the outfield is now covered as the rain continues, albeit lightly but persistently. We remain hopeful and optimistic that it will clear up soon, allowing play to resume. Fingers crossed!

Oh..no! Well, just the one ball bowled and the drizzle has turned into a shower here in Dambulla. The umpires call in for the covers and the players make their way out of the ground. There are a few white clouds above and we hope that it is just a passing shower. Stay tuned for further updates.

We are not far away from the start of the game but before that, the players from both sides make their way out to the middle and line up for their respective national anthems. It will be New Zealand's first followed by the national antem of Sri Lanka.

Mitchell Santner, the captain of New Zealand says that he was undecided before the toss but they will do everything to restrict Sri Lanka to a low score. Adds that there are a couple of changes. Henry Nicholls is back in the team. Informs Mitchell Hay, Tim Robinson, and Nathan Smith are making their debuts.

Charith Asalanka, the skipper for Sri Lanka says it looks like a good wicket and they want to add runs here. Concludes that they do not have a lot of changes from the T20 setup and are going in with 7 batters and 4 bowlers

PITCH REPORT - Aamir Sohail is down in the middle for the pitch analysis. He says the pitch has no grass and the deck is well rolled making it dry and should favour spinners while pacers will have to be smart with their plans. Adds that the batters will have to grind in on this surface.

Sri Lanka have been exceptional at home this year, and they’ll be determined to continue that domination in this series. Despite the setback of losing Wanindu Hasaranga to a hamstring injury, the hosts remain a formidable force, boasting a wealth of lethal spin options that will test the resilience of the Kiwi lineup. Charith Asalanka will be at the forefront, backed by a confident and in-form batting unit that has been instrumental in the team's resurgence on the international stage. Can the hosts deliver another commanding display of skill and character, or will the Kiwis rise to the occasion and seize the early advantage in this series? We’re about to find out, as the toss and team updates are just moments away!

New Zealand, buoyed by their impressive victory in India, albeit in a different format, come into this series with renewed confidence and a spring in their step. Their spirited fight in the recently concluded T20I series was a testament to their resilience. With key players like Mitchell Santner, Michael Bracewell and Glenn Phillips ready to capitalize on these slow, turning tracks, the Kiwis will be primed to carry forward their momentum. While the absence of Lockie Ferguson will be keenly felt, New Zealand possesses the depth and talent to fill the void effectively. Much of their success will hinge on how well their batters adapt to the conditions, as a solid start at the top of the order will be crucial in gaining an early edge.

The surface is anticipated to be a spinner's paradise, setting the stage for an intriguing battle as both sides boast impressive depth in their spin departments. However, the weather forecast adds an element of unpredictability, as rain threatens to interrupt the action with potential stoppages which makes the toss all the more crucial!

Hello and a warm welcome to the highly anticipated opening clash of this thrilling 3-match ODI series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand, from the iconic Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium! After a captivating conclusion to the T20I series, both teams are now set to raise the stakes and battle it out in the longer white-ball format. For New Zealand, this marks their first ODI outing since December 2023, and they’ll be eager to maximize this opportunity as they fine-tune their strategies ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy. On the other hand, Sri Lanka, who missed qualification for the marquee event, will be determined to make a resounding statement on the global stage, building on their encouraging progress in ODI cricket this year.

... MATCH DAY ...

The stage is set for an exciting 3-match ODI series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand, following their drawn T20I series that ended 1-1. The ODIs will begin in Dambulla and conclude in Pallekele. For New Zealand, this series marks the final leg of their extensive subcontinent tour, which began with a rain-affected Test against Afghanistan in Noida, followed by a 0-2 series loss to Sri Lanka, before an impressive 3-0 whitewash of India. The hosts, Sri Lanka, view this as another opportunity to assert their dominance on home soil. Both teams have announced formidable squads ahead of the series. Under the leadership of the dynamic Charith Asalanka, Sri Lanka's batting lineup appears robust with in-form top order Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis. The middle order features skipper Asalanka himself, alongside rising star Kamindu Mendis, and experienced campaigners Kusal Perera and Sadeera Samarawickrama adding depth. Sri Lanka's bowling arsenal is spearheaded by their formidable spin duo of Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana, who are expected to be particularly effective in the local conditions. While spin remains their primary weapon with multiple options available, the pace department will depend on Dilshan Madushanka and Asitha Fernando with Mohamed Shiraz also another seam option. New Zealand faced a setback as Lockie Ferguson, who had just returned from a right hamstring injury, has been ruled out of the ODI series due to a calf injury sustained during the T20Is, right after taking a spectacular Hat Trick which helped New Zealand win by 5 wickets. The loss of the express pace bowler, known for habitually hitting speeds of 150 kph, deals a significant blow to the Kiwi bowling attack ahead of the series. New Zealand has announced a like-for-like replacement in the form of Adam Milne. Him, with 49 ODIs under his belt, will spearhead the pace attack alongside Jacob Duffy and newcomer Nathan Smith, while all-rounders Zakary Foulkes and Josh Clarkson provide additional bowling options. Captain Mitchell Santner, coming off a strong performance, will lead the spin department with Ish Sodhi. The Kiwis have further strengthened their slow bowling resources with Michael Bracewell, Glenn Phillips, and Mark Chapman, giving them multiple spin options for the Sri Lankan conditions. New Zealand's most recent ODI bilateral series was against Bangladesh in December 2023, though they did face Sri Lanka during the 2023 ODI World Cup, securing a commanding victory. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, comes into this series with momentum after their recent ODI triumph over West Indies just a month ago. However, the head-to-head record favors the Kiwis significantly, as they've won all four of their last five encounters against Sri Lanka. With all said, the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium is all set to commence this ODI series. Will New Zealand go bang bang or can Sri Lanka hold their fort? Which team do you think will win?
