Commentary

Right then, that is it from this game. Sri Lanka wrap the series up and will look to go for the whitewash while New Zealand will play for pride The third and final ODI is scheduled to be played on 19th November, Tuesday at the same stadium. It will be begin at 9 am GMT, but as you know, you can always join us a bit early for all the build-up to the match. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Charith Asalanka, the victorious skipper of Sri Lanka says he is very happy with the win. Adds that as a team they are in a good process and want to continue the good work. Tells that he misread the pitch and thought dew would play a bigger factor. Mentions that he he hopes Maheesh Theekshana also liked his knock as it is not easy to bat here. Ends by saying that they will try their bench in the next game.

Mitchell Santner, the captain of New Zealand, says that it was a challenge to defend a low total but Kusal Mendis really batted well and took away the game from them. Adds that they have a really good spin attack and if they had more runs on the board, things could have been different. Credits Sri Lanka and Theekshana for their performance. Concludes that that is the nature of the schedule but they are ready for the upcoming games.

Kusal Mendis is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his match-winning knock. He says that the injury is not serious. Adds that it was tough to bat with the new ball but Pathum Nissanka gave them a good start. Tells that he wanted to take his time and take the game deep. Mentions that Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, and Janith Liyanage supported him well. Says that Jeffrey Vandersay and the other spinners bowled well, especially in the second half. Ends by saying that it was difficult to bat with cramps as he couldn't use the sweep to its full potential so he focused on the singles.

Presentation Time...

Maheesh Theekshana is up for a quick chat. He says that actually this win is more satisfying than the last one. Adds that Kusal Mendis played brilliantly and he is very happy with the team's performance. Tells that New Zealand bowled well but he rotated the strike well with Mendis to let him face more balls. Mentions that, the wicket was good but then rain came and pitch started turning and they had planned to play till the dew comes. Concludes that it was really helpful playing a World Cup in India and that has given them a different kind of experience to play in high intensity matches.

Earlier in the game, New Zealand managed a below-par total in a rain-interrupted innings reduced to 47 overs. Mark Chapman stood out with a brilliant 76 off 81, while Mitchell Hay contributed a valuable 49 to push them past the 200-mark. Theekshana was the standout bowler once again, claiming three wickets, while Vandersay also bagged three. Fernando picked up two, with Wellalage and Asalanka chipping in with a wicket each.

New Zealand, on the other hand, will be disappointed with their inability to cross the finish line. They had their chances in the game and made things tougher for Sri Lanka than expected. Michael Bracewell was outstanding with the ball, picking up four crucial wickets at key moments. Santner, Phillips, and Smith contributed with a wicket each, but Sodhi's inconsistency and lack of impact hurt them. Their fielding was below par, conceding 10-15 extra runs, which ultimately proved costly.

Kusal Mendis played his slowest ODI knock but it was extremely crucial for his team. He needed to take his time as he was losing partners at the other end. But he kept his calm at all times and this is even more impressive because he suffered from cramps halfway through his knock but still took is team over the line.  A couple of quick cameos from Dunith Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana supported him while he remained unbeaten on 74 off 102 balls

Sri Lanka began their chase on a steady note but lost a couple of wickets within the Powerplay. Nissanka squandered a good start, while Kamindu departed without scoring. Kusal Mendis, however, looked solid at the crease, anchoring the innings first with Asalanka and then with Liyanage. While both partnerships moved the chase forward, the dismissals of his partners left Mendis in a challenging position, shouldering the bulk of the responsibility in the pursuit.

SRI LANKA MAKES IT 2-0 AND SEALS THE SERIES! After getting their first ODI win over New Zealand since 2015 in the first game, the Lankans follow it up with another brilliant performance with once again Kusal Mendis being at the forefront of the team.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! New Zealand players are making their way out to the middle now and spread out to take their respective field positions. Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando are the two openers for Sri Lanka. Mitchell Santner takes the new ball himself and will start proceedings here. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

New Zealand will feel they're at least 30 runs short of what could have been a competitive total. They'll need early wickets now if they are to put pressure on the hosts. Sri Lanka on the other hand, will back themselves to chase this down. Join us in a bit for the second essay.

Sadeera Samarawickrama is up for a quick chat. He says that it was a pretty good fielding effort from the team. Adds that it is tough out there with the dew but everyone worked hard and it is showing. Mentions that he takes his fielding very seriously and always tries to improve on that. Says that their fielding coach, Upul Chandana was a great fielder in his time and he wants them to stop at lease 15-20 in each game and grab a few half-chances as well.

After losing 4 wickets for below 100, Mark Chapman and Mitchell Hay batted brilliantly and revived the New Zealand innings. When they were batting, 250 looked possible. However, Fernando in the 37th over managed to get Chapman and Michael Bracewell and from then on, the lower order crumbled too.

A really good performance with the ball by Sri Lanka! They really made the Kiwis work hard for their runs and also managed to take timely wickets. It was the spinners who did a good job at the start. Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana and Jeffrey Vandersay really were good in the first phase of the innings. It was Asitha Fernando though who actually bowled the over which took his side right on top.

45.1W

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Maheesh Theekshana wraps things up and Mitchell Hay has been dismissed on 49. Flatter, full and around off, Hay goes down for the reverse sweep but misses as the ball passes very close to the bat and his gloves. There is a huge appeal by the Lankans and they look confident as there is a small noise. However, the umpire says no. Charith Asalanka takes the review, UtraEdge shows a spike when the ball is close to the gloves and the on-field call is overturned. To be fair, even before the decision came on the big screen, Hay started to walk back, and only the umpire was on the field to raise his finger. New Zealand have been bowled out for 209!

Sloppy again from the Lankans.

Short of a length but angling down the leg side, Jacob Duffy misses his pull. Wided.

MISFIELD AND FOUR! That brings up the 200 for New Zealand as well! A low full toss, on middle, Mitchell Hay drills it down the ground and wide of long on. Jeffrey Vandersay runs to his left, bends down to collect it but the ball bounces just in front of him, hits his hands and goes away for a boundary.

44.10

Fuller in length and just around leg, Mitchell Hay goes down across to scoop it away but fails to connect. It is not called a wide. However, it looks like Hay is suffering from a bit of cramps and the physio is in to check on him.

Ish Sodhi looks to glance it away but misses and loses his balance too as he walks out of the crease. Kusal Mendis grabs it behind the stumps and shows quick reflexes to break the stumps.  The replay shows that Sodhi's bat was in the air and he has to go. He smacks the bat in the ground in frustration and the Kiwis are nine down now. Also, it is called a wide.

43.24

44.10

PITCH REPORT - Farveez Maharoof is pitchside. He says that the fitness levels of the players will be tested as it is very hot and humid. Adds that there are a few cracks and that will help the spinners in this game. Mentions that traditionally teams chasing here have done well and a total of around 270-280 should be a competitive one.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Will Young, Tim Robinson, Henry Nicholls, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Hay (WK), Mitchell Santner (C), Nathan Smith, Ish Sodhi, Jacob Duffy.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis (WK), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka (C), Janith Liyanage, Kamindu Mendis, Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay, Dunith Wellalage (In place of Dilshan Madushanka), Asitha Fernando.

TOSS - Sri Lanka have won the toss and elected to BOWL first.

New Zealand, on the other hand, got off to a promising start in the shortened chase, but their innings fell apart after the dismissals of openers Will Young and Tim Robinson. While Michael Bracewell showed some resilience, players like Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman will need to step up and take more responsibility. With the ball, Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi remain key threats but must focus on maintaining consistency in their line and length. The weather seems a bit uncertain, but we’re hopeful for some action, even if it’s a reduced game. Stay tuned for the toss and more updates!

Sri Lanka has had a remarkable year across formats, excelling in T20Is, ODIs, and Tests, where they remain in contention for the WTC final. Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando set the tone for the series with centuries in the opening match, and the team will once again rely on them to provide a strong start. The middle order has been consistently reliable, adding depth to their batting lineup. On the bowling front, Maheesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage will be key players, especially on a spin-friendly pitch.

Hello and a warm welcome to the coverage of the 2nd ODI between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy. Sri Lanka leads the series 1-0 after an impressive performance in the first match. Meanwhile, New Zealand will be eager to bounce back and level the series with a win here.

... MATCH DAY ...

After an entertaining Dambulla leg of New Zealand's white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, the action now shifts south to the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy for the final two ODIs. The three-match series stands at 1-0 in favour of the hosts, who are eager to extend their impressive home streak, having remained unbeaten in series across formats since September. In the rain-affected opening game, centuries from Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis powered Sri Lanka to an imposing total. Chasing a revised target of 221 runs in 27 overs, New Zealand fell significantly short. The absence of Lockie Ferguson, ruled out of the series due to a calf injury, exposed the inexperience in their pace attack. However, the inclusion of Adam Milne as Ferguson’s replacement adds much-needed experience and stability. On the batting front, the Kiwis had two debutants among their six batters, and their vulnerability against spin as a team was evident. To stay alive in the series, the likes of Will Young, Henry Nicholls, and Glenn Phillips must step up and deliver impactful performances. As for Sri Lanka, they were near flawless in the opening game, with their batters setting a strong foundation and the bowlers complementing with disciplined spells. They haven’t secured qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy but a series win here would boost their morale and reaffirm their dominance at home. Unless there are last-minute injury concerns, the hosts are likely to stick with the same playing XI. Should they seal the series in this second ODI, they may look to rotate players and rest key members ahead of the Test series in South Africa later this month. That said, Charith Asalanka and Co. would not want to look too far ahead and their focus would be firmly on clinching the series. Can the Kiwis muster a spirited comeback to level the series, or will the hosts assert their dominance and seal the series? We shall find out soon enough.
