Commentary
Welcome back for the second essay. Kathryn Bryce and Co. take their respective places on the field. It will be the left-hand, right-hand combination of Chamari Athapaththu and Imesha Dulani. Kathryn Bryce will take the new ball for her side. Captain vs captain. Here we go.
... THE RUN CHASE ...
Game on - Sri Lanka need 152 for victory and, ideally, will want to get there quickly to improve their net run rate. Scotland, meanwhile, will take confidence from having already won a game at this venue earlier in the tournament. They will back themselves to defend this total and by doing so, secure direct qualification for the next edition of the Women's T20 World Cup. Back in a bit for the Lankan reply.
A quick word - Ailsa Lister has caught up with the broadcasters. Lister says she is pleased with the batting effort and heaps praise on Sarah, describing her innings as unbelievable. She adds that batting becomes much easier when someone at the other end is scoring so freely. Looking ahead, she says the conditions are good and hopes there is some swing available with the new ball, although she is unsure how much the weather will influence that. She also says the team does not need any extra motivation when playing at a World Cup. While the results have not always gone their way, she believes they have played some very good cricket throughout the tournament.
An innings paced well - Darcey Carter, Scotland's leading run-scorer in the tournament, looked full of confidence early on and got off to another positive start. However, once the field spread, she could not find the boundaries with the same regularity, nor was she able to rotate the strike consistently. As the ball got older and lost its hardness, scoring seemed to become difficult, with Sri Lanka's spinners applying the squeeze effectively through the middle overs. What Scotland did well, though, was keep wickets in hand and towards the back end, handy contributions from Sarah Bryce and Ailsa Lister gave them the finish they were after.
Scotland finish with a flourish - 40 runs off the last 4 overs have allowed the Scots to go past 150, and handed them the psychological edge heading into the defence. Chamari Athapaththu had spoken at the toss about 130-140 being a good score to chase, but Scotland have gone beyond that. Sri Lanka now have their work cut out on a used surface.

FOUR! Sarah Bryce finishes things off in style! Mithali Ayodhya lands this short of a length, just outside off, Sarah Bryce stands tall and cuts it away through point for a boundary. Scotland Women end up with 151/6 on the board!
Put down! Pitched up and on off, Megan McColl uses her feet and thumps it down the pitch but fails to keep it down. Mithali Ayodhya tries to grab it on her follow-through but the ball bursts through her hands. They cross.
Megan McColl comes out to the middle.
OUT! TIMBER! Mithali Ayodhya has her second wicket. A slower one, full and on middle, Pippa Sproul shuffles across for the scoop but misses the ball completely as it goes through and rattles the stumps.
Low full toss, following the batter as she backs away. Bryce smears it behind square leg for a single.
Almost another run out! Fuller and on leg, Sarah Bryce jams it out wide of long on and turns around for the second. Pippa Sproul responds well, but the throw is at her end. Mithali Ayodhya collects and breaks the stumps, but Pippa has just dragged her bat in.
Chamari Athapaththu is having a word with Mithali Ayodhya.
FOUR! Bryce flashes and flashes hard! Full again and outside off, Sarah Bryce throws her hands at it, and it goes off the outer half over short third for a boundary.
WIDE! Fuller but down the leg side, Sarah Bryce misses her flick.
Pippa Sproul is the new batter, but it will be Sarah Bryce on strike at the start of the over. Mithali Ayodhya to close out the innings. Can Scotland reach 150?

OUT! CHATTERJI IS RUN OUT! Nilakshika Silva bowls this on a good length and on off, Sarah Bryce pushes it towards cover-point and sets off for the run without looking at her partner. Priyanaz Chatterji hesitates and that proves to be fatal for her. Harshitha Samarawickrama throws the ball to the keeper's end, where Kaushini Nuthyangana breaks the stumps with Chatterji well short of her crease.
Priyanaz Chatterji makes her way out to bat.
OUT! LISTER IS RUN OUT! Good work from Nilakshika Silva. She goes full again, on middle, angling in, Ailsa Lister swings but misses as the ball goes off her pads to the off side. The batters decide to take the leg bye but Silva is quick to get to the ball. She picks it up, turns around, takes aim and hits the bullseye at the bowler's end with Lister not even in the frame.
FOUR! Sloppy effort in the deep! Another slower delivery, full and on middle, dips in too. Ailsa Lister gets down on one knee and sweeps it away wide of deep mid-wicket. The fielder runs to her right but dives over the ball and lets it through for a boundary.
Moon ball, outside off and dips in late, Sarah Bryce squeezes it out to sweeper cover for a run.

Goes short and outside off, Ailsa Lister cuts it to point.
FOUR! Nice use of the feet! Flighted, full and on off, Ailsa Lister skips down the track to get to the pitch of it and blasts it wide of long off for a boundary.
Floated, full and outside off, Sarah Bryce goes down and sweeps it to deep mid-wicket for a single.
Commentary
Goodbye from Manchester - That's a wrap from an absorbing contest. Sri Lanka just edged past Scotland, who once again came agonisingly close but bow out of the World Cup with plenty to be proud of after a series of spirited performances. The action continues with a triple-header on Saturday, 27th June. It all begins with Pakistan taking on Netherlands at 9.30 am GMT. That will be followed by the clash between West Indies and Ireland at 1.30 pm GMT, with the Windies needing just a win to seal a semi-final spot. Any other result could open the door for Sri Lanka or New Zealand. The final game of the day sees New Zealand face hosts England at 5.30 pm GMT, with England already through to the semi-finals from Group B. As always, you can join us well before the first ball for all the build-up, analysis and team news. Until then, take care and goodbye!
The victorious skipper of Sri Lanka Women - Chamari Athapaththu begins by congratulating Scotland on the way they played. She says her side played good cricket but admits she is disappointed with the batting performance. She feels her side did not handle pressure well and says they need to improve significantly with the bat going forward. Mentions that she came out with the intent of boosting the team's net run rate, but unfortunately, could not carry on after her aggressive start. She also praises Nilakshika Silva and a few others for their efforts in the field before adding that, at the end of the day, the team simply needs to improve its cricket in all departments. Athapaththu says reaching the semifinals was the team's target, but admits the defeat to West Indies proved costly. On her own future, Athapaththu says whether she features at the 2028 T20 World Cup will depend on both her performances and fitness.
The captain of Scotland Women - Kathryn Bryce says a Super Over did cross her mind and felt a couple of dot balls could have changed everything. She admits the defeat is heartbreaking, especially with Scotland finding themselves in winning positions in three matches without managing to get over the line. At the same time, she expresses pride in the way the team fought back, particularly through the middle overs after Chamari Athapaththu's innings. She adds that captaining the side has been a valuable learning experience and credits her teammates for their support throughout the tournament. While direct qualification for the 2028 Women's T20 World Cup would have meant a lot, she says Scotland still have plenty of cricket ahead to look forward to. She also heaps praise on Darcey Carter, calling her an unbelievable player who always plays with a smile on her face, and says the team will now focus on what comes next.
Time to hear from the two captains now...
Dropped chances proved costly - Scotland Women were a little inconsistent with the ball early on, offering too many loose deliveries, but Rachel Slater struck early before Katherine Fraser removed the opposition captain in a crucial breakthrough. Captain Kathryn Bryce once again inspired her side with a double strike in the middle overs, while Fraser added another wicket to keep the contest alive. Scotland fought back brilliantly to leave Sri Lanka needing 17 from the final two overs, but a couple of costly dropped catches from Gabriella Fontenla proved decisive as a famous victory slipped agonisingly through their fingers.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Nilakshika Silva wins the award for her valuable unbeaten run-a-ball 21. She also bowled 2 overs and gave away just 12 runs. She says she is proud of both the team's performance and her own contribution. Reflecting on the previous game against West Indies, where she was dismissed early, she says she wanted to stay till the end and finish the chase herself this time. Mentions that she trusted her skills throughout the innings. Shares that she and Kavisha Dilhari spoke about building a partnership, and after Kavisha's dismissal, she knew she had to take responsibility and see the team home.
Scotland posted a fighting total - Earlier in the game, Scotland Women battled their way to a competitive total, with useful contributions throughout the innings. Kathryn Bryce and Darcey Carter played important supporting roles, but it was Sarah Bryce who anchored the innings with a composed unbeaten 47, while Lister's 26 off 17 balls helped push the total beyond the 150-run mark. For Sri Lanka Women, Mithali Ayodhya was once again the standout with two wickets, while Sugandika Kumari and Kavisha Dilhari claimed one apiece. However, they were unable to finish strongly with the ball, conceding valuable runs at the death.
Sri Lanka survive a scare to get over the line - Sri Lanka made a flying start, with captain Chamari Athapaththu setting the tone through a blistering 33 off just 16 balls. However, her dismissal before the end of the Powerplay sparked a collapse as they slipped from 57/2 to 78/4. Hasini Perera and Harshitha Samarawickrama played vital hands to keep the chase alive, while Kavisha Dilhari and Kaushini Nuthyangana chipped in with useful contributions. But it was Nilakshika Silva who held her nerve under pressure, guiding Sri Lanka home with a composed match-winning knock.
Agony and relief at Old Trafford - Heartbreak for Scotland Women! They leave everything out on the field, but it is just not enough. They had their moments throughout the contest and will rue the chances that slipped away, knowing a slightly sharper display could have changed the result. The defeat is even more painful as it also costs them direct qualification for the 2028 T20 World Cup. For Sri Lanka Women, it is a historic achievement as they register three group-stage wins at a Women's T20 World Cup for the first time, although it still looks unlikely to be enough to secure a place in the semi-finals.
FOUR! Sugandika Kumari has done it for Sri Lanka. Joy for the Asian nation as they win and stay in the hunt for a semifinal berth. Disappointment for Scotland. Nothing wrong with the ball from Priyanaz Chatterji. Attacking the stumps on a good length from around the wicket. Sugandika Kumari makes room for herself and throws her hands at the ball. It goes more off an outside edge, and it races through the vacant short third region for a boundary.
Tight single. Honing in on the off stump, on a good length. Silva dabs it to backward point, where Gabriella Fontenla gets low to pick the ball up and is quick to get rid of the ball. Sarah Bryce whips the bails off, but Sugandika Kumari has made it in by then. A direct hit was needed there.
3 needed in 3 now. All three results are still possible. Also, Rachel Slater gets cramped up in the middle of her run-up. She tries again but is struggling badly, and the physio is called upon. If Slater can't continue, who will Kathryn Bryce turn to? There is a discussion going on in the middle. Slater is, in fact, walking off in tears, a scene which you don't want to see. It will be Priyanaz Chatterji to finish the final over.
Bowled on a good length, on middle. Nilakshika Silva shuffles across the stumps and plays the scoop over the keeper. The ball does not have enough legs to reach the fence, and Gabriella Fontenla cuts it off after giving chase from short third. A couple for Nilakshika. 3 needed off 3.
From over the wicket, no pace to work with, on a short of a length, on off. Sugandika tries to force it away on the off side. Ends up chopping it beside the strip on the leg side and she is called through for a single.
Hurls it full from around the wicket with the keeper being up to the stumps. Nilakshika Silva makes room and crunches it to deep point for just a single.

Will the extra ball cost Scotland Women?
Two wides! Scotland cannot afford this. Down leg, on a back of a length. Silva misses out on the tickle. It clips the gloves of the keeper and goes behind as the batters cross over.
Full and straight, on middle. Sugandika Kumari pushes it to long on for a single.
A run saved. On a length, wide on off. Silva frees her arms and slams it past point. Pippa Sproul sprints to her left and covers a lot of ground. She dives to prevent the boundary. Three runs taken.
PUT DOWN! Gabriella Fontenla shells another chance. This was tougher, though. Full and angled in, on middle. Silva tries to work it across the line with a closed bat face. It pops up to point, where Gabriella Fontenla dives in front but can't cling on as the ball dips on her. As the ball rolls away, the batters are alert to come back for the second run.
Does not carry! On the fuller side, wider on off. Kumari throws her hands at the ball. Slices it off the outer half to short third, where Priyanaz Chatterji dives in front but the ball drops in front. She parries it in front for one.
Takes pace off, on a back of a length, on middle. Silva is early into the pull and toe-ends it to long on but cannot come back for the second.
Into the tail now. Sugandika Kumari walks out to bat. Kathryn Bryce will bowl the penultimate over.

OUT! CAUGHT! It was there to be put away, but Kaushini Nuthyangana has holed out. Slater gets the length wrong as she serves a low full toss, at the sticks. Nuthyangana makes room to go inside out, but does not quite get hold of it. Ailsa Lister moves to her left at extra cover and takes the catch at shoulder height. Sri Lanka Women are now 7 down for 135, needing 17 off 12 balls.
FOUR MORE! To the other side this time. Pace off, on a good length, on middle and leg. Nuthyangana makes use of the angle and shovels it to the left of the diving short fine leg fielder for another four.
DROPPED, FOUR! That should have been taken. Slater goes searching for the yorker but it comes out as a low full toss, on middle. Nuthyangana makes room to go big on the off side. Gets a thick outside edge and it flies to short third, where Gabriella Fontenla is late to get her hands high. The ball clips her fingertips and goes behind for a four.
Following the batter, bowled into the wicket. Silva pulls it through square leg for one.

OUT! IN THE AIR..GONE! Kirstie Gordon gets a big wicket here. She floats it up, full and on off, Kavisha Dilhari uses her feet and gets low to loft it over mid off with a straight bat. However, the ball dips on her and she ends up lobbing it in the air, getting no power. Kathryn Bryce backtracks a bit and takes a good catch. Fist bumps all around the Scottish camp.
A bit quicker, full and on middle, Nilakshika Silva works it to the left of short mid-wicket, who dives and parries it to long on. They cross.
Short again and aound off, Nilakshika Silva slaps it wide of sweper cover for a brace.

Drops it short and on middle, Kavisha Dilhari pulls it to deep square leg for a run.
Flighted, full and on middle, Nilakshika Silva clips it to deep mid-wicket for a single.
DRINKS BREAK! These two sides continue to trade blows. Scotland are chasing a victory that could secure direct qualification for the next T20 World Cup, while Sri Lanka ideally need to win with room to spare to give their net run rate a boost in their semifinal push. Just over a run a ball is required, and with two experienced heads out in the middle, a lot rests on them to get Sri Lanka over the line. Every time Sri Lanka have threatened to build some momentum, Scotland have hit back, and they will know a wicket or two here could put the pressure right back on the chasing side.

DRINKS! Scotland Women have removed the threat of Chamari Athapaththu and they will feel that they can build on this and put pressure on the Lankan middle order, which has struggled in this tournament. Sri Lanka Women have the platform set for this chase, but they will have to bat well and smartly in the middle overs and it will be a good challenge for someone other than the skipper to step up. Also, Harshitha Samarawickrama comes out to the middle.

Done with the pre-match formalities! We can see the Sri Lanka Women players make their way out to the middle and take their respective field positions. Darcey Carter and Katherine Fraser are the two openers for Scotland Women. Mithali Ayodhya has the new ball in her hand and is raring to go. Let's play...
The players line up for the national anthems ahead of the match, with Scotland's anthem followed by Sri Lanka's. It is a proud moment for both teams as they soak in the atmosphere before the action gets underway.
PITCH REPORT - Anjum Chopra says there is a nice breeze blowing across the ground. Informs that the square boundaries measure 61 metres on either side, while it is 70 metres straight down the ground. She adds that it looks like a very good surface for batting. Mel Jones describes the pitch as flat, hard and dry. She points out that spinners have enjoyed more success than the seamers at this venue during the tournament. Her advice for the spinners is to get their lines right from the outset and keep attacking the stumps.
Scotland Women (Playing XI) - Darcey Carter, Katherine Fraser, Kathryn Bryce (C), Sarah Bryce (WK), Ailsa Lister, Priyanaz Chatterji, Pippa Sproul, Megan McColl, Rachel Slater, Kirstie Gordon and Gabriella Fontenla (In for Hannah Rainey).
Sri Lanka Women (Unchanged Playing XI) - Chamari Athapaththu (C), Imesha Dulani, Hasini Perera, Hansima Karunaratne, Harshitha Samarawickrama, Kavisha Dilhari, Nilakshika Silva, Kaushini Nuthyangana (WK), Sugandika Kumari, Nimasha Meepage and Mithali Ayodhya.
The skipper of Scotland Women - Kathryn Bryce says that they would have probably batted first as the surface looks a bit dry. Adds that it is an exciting position to be in, fighting for something and having a chance of direct qualification to the 2028 T20 World Cup. Bryce mentions that hopefully they can play their best cricket in this game. Says the conditions are pretty similar, maybe it will turn a bit later on.
The captain of Sri Lanka Women - Chamari Athapaththu says they will bowl first as she has confidence in her bowling attack. She adds that the plan is to play positive cricket and execute their skills well. Feels like a target in the region of 130-140 would be a good one to chase on this surface. Regardless of the qualification equation, Athapaththu says the focus is on playing their best cricket and registering a victory.
TOSS - It's time for one last coin flip here at Old Trafford in this World Cup. Both the captains are out in the middle now. Chamari Athapaththu gives it a flick, and it lands in her favour. Sri Lanka Women elect to BOWL first.
Semifinal equation - For Sri Lanka Women, it is not just about winning but winning big. With England already through to the semifinals, the Lankans have the weakest net run rate among the three teams still in contention for the remaining qualification spot from the group. They will be eyeing a commanding victory while hoping Ireland upset West Indies and England get the better of New Zealand later in the day. Toss and team news in a bit.
Building on the positives - Scotland Women may be out of semifinal contention, but victory could see them finish above Sri Lanka in the standings and help their direct qualification case for the next edition. Kathryn Bryce's side have shown glimpses of their potential throughout the competition, and their only win so far came here in Manchester against Ireland, something they will look to draw confidence from.
Old Trafford's final act - Just one game on the schedule today, and it comes to you from Manchester, which hosts its final match of this Women's T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka take on Scotland, with both sides still having plenty to play for.
... MATCH DAY ...
Hanging by a thread - The ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 moves to Old Trafford in Manchester for a fascinating Group B encounter between Sri Lanka Women and Scotland Women, with the two sides arriving with vastly different stakes on the line. Sri Lanka have somehow kept their semi-final hopes alive, but only just. Their defeat to West Indies a few days ago left them staring at elimination before captain Chamari Athapaththu responded in the best possible fashion, smashing a match-winning century against Ireland. However, the Lankans still do not have complete control over their destiny. They need to win here and then hope West Indies and New Zealand suffer defeat in their final group fixtures. Even then, their significantly inferior net run rate means every run and every wicket could prove crucial. Chamari's redemption story - Few players have embodied their team's fortunes more than Chamari Athapaththu in this tournament. Days after calling herself a 'failure' as captain following the loss to West Indies, she produced one of the innings of the competition, carrying her bat for an unbeaten 106 against Ireland to keep Sri Lanka alive. She has now amassed 139 runs in the tournament and remains Sri Lanka's biggest match-winner by some distance. Yet, the encouraging signs do not end there. Nilakshika Silva has quietly put together an excellent campaign as well, scoring 127 runs at a strike rate above 125 and providing much-needed stability in the middle order. Sri Lanka's challenge has been consistency, with their batting often leaning heavily on one or two individuals. If they are to keep their dreams alive, they will need a more complete team performance. Sri Lanka's spin web - While Chamari Athapaththu has grabbed most of the headlines, Sri Lanka's bowling attack has quietly been one of their strengths in the tournament. Mithali Ayodhya has been impressive with her clever variations, while Kavisha Dilhari alongside the skipper has provided crucial breakthroughs and control through the middle overs with her all-round abilities. Sugandika Kumari's left-arm spin has also been effective in tying down batters and forcing mistakes. On surfaces that have generally offered assistance to the slower bowlers, Sri Lanka will once again bank on their experienced spin unit to apply the squeeze and keep their slim semi-final hopes alive. More than just results - Scotland Women may already be out of contention, but their campaign deserves plenty of credit. They began with an excellent win over Ireland, pushed West Indies all the way before falling agonisingly short by seven runs, and then gave a good account of themselves against England despite chasing a total in excess of 200. Their latest outing followed a similar script as they had New Zealand reeling at 26/3 before experience eventually took the White Ferns over the line. On another day, Scotland could easily have been arriving at this game with a genuine shot at the semi-finals. Instead, they now have the opportunity to play party spoilers and sign off with another competitive performance. Scotland's rising stars - If one player has captured the imagination for Scotland, it has been Darcey Carter. The young batter has been one of the standout performers of the tournament, compiling 174 runs, the most by any Scotland player and among the leading run-scorers overall, highlighted by superb half-centuries against both West Indies and New Zealand. She has found admirable support in Sarah Bryce, whose aggressive 112 runs have often kept Scotland moving at a healthy rate. With the ball, Kirstie Gordon has enjoyed an impressive tournament as well, picking up six wickets and consistently troubling opposition batters with her left-arm spin. Kathryn Bryce also has six scalps to her name. For a side competing in only its second Women's T20 World Cup, Scotland have shown that they belong on this stage. Team Form (Last 5 completed WT20Is, latest first) - SL-W - WLWLW | SCO-W - LLLWW. One final push - For Sri Lanka Women, the equation is simple but brutally difficult. They must win and keep their hopes alive, however slim they may be, while also improving their net run rate as much as possible. Scotland, meanwhile, may be out of semi-final contention, but they still have plenty to play for. The top four teams from each group will qualify directly for the 2028 Women's T20 World Cup, and both sides will have one eye on securing their place among those automatic qualifiers. Scotland have already shown throughout this tournament that they can challenge more established teams and now have the opportunity to derail Sri Lanka's unlikely semi-final bid, while the Lankans know that anything less than a win would bring the curtain down on their campaign. With contrasting motivations but significant stakes still attached, another intriguing evening of World Cup cricket awaits in Manchester.

Pushes the length up now, on off. Nuthyangana backs away to go through the off side. Mistimes it to the left of mid off for a single.
From around the wicket, on a good length, on the off stump. Nuthyangana makes room and taps it to cover.
