Commentary

Right then, the first game of the Super Eight stage is done and dusted but it is just the start of what looks to be a very closely-fought contest for those semifinal spots. Next up, reigning champions England go up against an in-form West Indies side at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia in a star-studded match up. That game will be played on Thursday, 20 June at 6 am IST (12.30 am GMT) but you can tune in to our build-up much sooner. Till then, take care and goodbye!

The victorious skipper of South Africa, Aiden Markram is up for a chat. He says Andries Gous and Harmeet Singh played well and gave a hard time but they’ll learn from this and will look to win more comprehensively. Says that at one point USA were 70-80 for five and had the bowling been a bit more disciplined the result would have looked something different. Adds that there is always room for improvement but the wicket got a bit better to bat on in the second half of the chase but they did well in the end to win this. Mentions that the time Quinton de Kock spent in the middle gives them a massive boost as he can change the course of any game.

The captain of USA, Aaron Jones says that they aren't disappointed but it is hard to swallow this defeat and could have been more disciplined with the ball. Adds that they have a lot of talent in the team and if they play well, they can beat any side. Mentions that they need to be a lot more disciplined and they will go back to the drawing and come back hard. Adds that he is happy to go to Barbados as he knows the conditions well.

Quinton de Kock is the Player Of The Match for his splendid batting performance. He is up for a quick chat and says he feels good to spend some time in the middle and the wicket helped as this was a better surface to bat on and not that tricky. Adds that he managed to take advantage of the shorted boundary and that helped. Mentions that they have played on some tricky tracks but it is nice to get such a pitch and they’ll be looking to build up from hereon. Closes by saying that they have got the big boys to play against now and they’ll need more runs and an even better performance to advance to the knock-out stage.

The Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Aaron Jones put South Africa into bat after winning the toss in the hopes of some early wickets but this backfired as after getting rid of Reeza Hendricks early on, the USA bowlers were taken to the cleaners by Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram. The pair never let their foot off the pedal and kept going hard at the bowlers. They added 110 runs as de Kock brought up a brilliant fifty but Markram got out on 46. The Proteas lost de Kock as well but managed to stitch together another partnership as Heinrich Klaasen and Tristan Stubbs stepped up and the former was more of the aggressor. Stubbs played a few too many shots but did end the innings on a high. Saurabh Netravalkar was yet again at the forefront of the USA attack, picking up wickets and whilst remaining highly economical. Harmeet Singh was another on who picked up a couple of wickets without conceding many runs but the rest of the bowlers were taken to the cleaners. In reply, USA fell 18 short in what was a topsy-turvy chase.

Almost another feather in the cap for USA but that slump in the batting after the Powerplay has cost them dearly here. Needing 195 for the win, they lost Steven Taylor after he made a quick start but the next four batters that came in scored a total of just 23 runs. Andries Gous was going great guns at one end and needed a partner and he got it in the form of Harmeet Singh. Together, the pair put on 91 runs in a remarkable stand and that left-hand, right-hand combination proved to be quite destructive. Harmeet got out in the 19th over and that was a crucial blow to the co-hosts but Gous remained on a stellar 80 off just 47 balls against the country of his origin and his knock will be remembered as one of the fines in USA's history so far.

What an enthralling contest but in the end, South Africa have reigned supreme and become the first team to register a win in the Super 8s of the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. USA gave it their all and almost pulled off another huge win but have to settle for second-best here. South Africa had the runs on the board but it felt like they should have got more at the backend of their innings. Their frontline pacers weren't great to start with but Kagiso Rabada managed to pick up an early wicket. They built on it after the Powerplay and had the opposition reeling at the halfway mark as Anrich Nortje and Keshav Maharaj came into the mix. Tabraiz Shamsi picked up a wicket off his first ball to pile on further misery but then came the counter punch from USA and for a while, South Africa didn't have much of an answer. Shamsi conceded 22 runs in the 18th over and left the door ajar for USA but Rabada bowled a fine 19th over and made sure that his team didn't end up on the losing side.

Commentary

We are back with the chase. The umpires have made their way to the middle followed by the players of South Africa. Steven Taylor and Andries Gous are the openers for USA. For South Africa, Marco Jansen will bowl the first over.

... The Run Chase ...

The bowling from USA was not up to the mark as they leaked runs on both sides and did not stick to their plans but eventually, they will feel they have kept the opposition about 15 runs or so short of what could have been an even higher total. The bowlers lacked discipline and gave a lot of 'hit-me' deliveries. Harmeet Singh got a timely double strike in his last over. Saurabh Netravalkar was once again spot on and bowled tremendously having figures of 21 for 2. The target is a big one but we have seen USA has got the players to chase this down. Can they do it against a quality bowling unit of South Africa? We shall find that out soon as the chase is up next.

Skipper of South Africa, Aiden Markram is up for a chat and he says they’re happy with the total. Adds the conditions got better after 5-6 overs and it got difficult for the bowlers after that. Mentions that he is happy with the contribution from the top order and feels this is nicely set up for them. Reckons that the surface doesn’t look to favor the spinners yet but they have got quality spinners and he is counting on them to do well and get the job done.

A brilliant knock with the bat from Quinton de Kock and co, helps South Africa put up a show with the bat as they score 194 after 20 overs which is also the highest-ever Men's T20I total at this ground. After being asked to bat first, the Proteas started on the front foot and came out with a positive intent. Quinton de Kock in particular was the aggressor and smashed the bowlers of USA all around the park. He went on to play a superb knock of 74 off just 40 deliveries. It was another meager out for Reeza Hendricks but de Kock was well helped by Aiden Markramas he played the perfect anchor, allowing de Kock to keep going big. Aiden Markram fell short of a deserving half-century and was caught by Ali Khan when he was on 46.  Heinrich Klaasen ended the innings with a good hand of 36 runs as Tristan Stubbs also mustered up a few crucial runs.

FOUR! Glorious shot from Tristan Stubbs to end the innings! Ali Khan bowls it a bit full and at the stumps, Stubbs switches his position and plays the reverse scoop right back over the keeper's head with good timing and the ball goes into the ropes. South Africa finish with a huge total of 194/4 on the board!

19.51

Really well bowled that by Ali Khan. Heinrich Klaasen looks to back away and open up the off side by Ali Khan follows him with a yorker and Klaasen can only jam it out back past the bowler for a single towards mid off.

19.42

Close but not close enough! Ali Khan goes full and straight and gets it right in the blockhole. Heinrich Klaasen hangs deep in the crease and drills the ball down to long on and straight away calls for two. The batters push hard and the fielder picks up the ball and throws it at the keeper's end. The bails are whipped off by the keeper and the umpires go upstairs. The replays show that Klaasen had made his ground and it will be NOT OUT.

19.36

SIX! Picked-up and dispatched! Banged in well short and over middle, sitting up nicely for the batter. Heinrich Klaasen gets in position early and pulls it a bit off the top edge and gets enough power as the ball sails over the square leg fence.

19.21

Banged in short and at the batter, Tristan Stubbs gets on top of the bounce and pulls it to the right of the man at deep mid-wicket for one more.

19.11

Attempted yorker on middle, just missing by a couple of inches and Heinrich Klaasen powers it down to long on for a single.

18.60

Immaculate bowling from Saurabh Netravalkar and only 6 runs come off the penultimate over of the innings. Full and right in the blockhole around off, this time Tristan Stubbs hangs deep in the crease and looks to go over long on but toe-ends it back to the bowler.

18.50

A hat-trick of dots and Tristan Stubbs is trying too many things out there. Full and wide again, angled well across the right-hander, Stubbs walks across the off stump and looks to slog it over backward square leg but gets in a tangle and gets hit on the pads.

18.40

Another golden dot and that is brilliant execution from Saurabh Netravalkar. Tristan Stubbs is early to go across the off stump and Netravalkar is able to get the wide yorker even wider and the ball sneaks under Stubbs' willow.

18.30

Full and wide angled across the right-hander and this one is right on the money. Tristan Stubbs cue-ends it back to the keeper who makes a sharp stop diving to his right.

18.22

A low full toss, wide of the off stump, Tristan Stubbs reaches out and slaps it away wide of long off where Nitish Kumar sprints across to his left and dives in to save a couple of runs for his side.

18.14

EDGED AND FOUR! Slower delivery from over the stumps, a touch fuller and angling it across the right-hander. Tristan Stubbs hangs back and looks to hammer it on the off side but gets a thick outside edge that goes well wide of the keeper and rolls away into the third man fence.

Saurabh Netravalkar (3-0-15-2) will bowl the penultimate over.

Nice and full outside the off stump and in the blockhole, Tristan Stubbs jams the ball out through covers and picks up a single.

17.52

Oh, where was that heading? A bit pre-meditated from Tristan Stubbs and he sets up for the reverse ramp but Ali Khan bowls a full toss right at Stubbs and he somehow manages to adjust and flicks it over the keeper's head for a couple of runs.

17.41

Nails the straight yorker now, Heinrich Klaasen digs it out through the mid-wicket region and looks for two but has to settle for the single as the fielder in the deep is quick to attack the ball.

17.30

Good comeback from Ali Khan. A well-directed bumper, bowled at a brisk pace and right around the face. Heinrich Klaasen sways away from the line of the ball.

17.26

SIX! In the slot and over the ropes! Too full outside off stump, Heinrich Klaasen stays deep and opens up the off side before slam-dunking it over the cover fence for a lovely six.

17.12

Full and on off stump, looking to get in the yorker, Heinrich Klaasen stays deep in the crease and heaves it away wide of long on for a couple of runs.

On a good length and pushed well outside off stump, Tristan Stubbs moves to the off side and looks to cut but is well beaten. A fairly tidy over from Jessy Singh barring the two wides.

16.51

Rolls his fingers across the ball and floats it up full and outside off, Heinrich Klaasen drills the ball straight back past the bowler but collects just one more as the fielder in the deep tidies up.

16.41

Nice and full outside the off stump, driven away off the front foot but not quite wide enough of long off. Just another single for Stubbs.

16.31

Takes some pace off that one and bowls it slightly shorter around off, Heinrich Klaasen hits it off the back foot and gets it down to long on for a single.

16.31wd

WIDE! Another extra as Jessy Singh gets the wide yorker beyond the tramline outside off and Heinrich Klaasen is unable to reach it.

16.31wd

WIDE! Looks to bowl it into the pitch but angles it well outside the off stump for a wide.

Done and dusted with the pre-match formalities and it is now time to get the Super Eight stage underway! The umpires are out in the middle and so are the players of USA who take their places on the field. It will be the pairing of Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks that will open the innings for South Africa. The in-form Saurabh Netravalkar has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Just the one slip in place. Let's go...

It is time for the pre-match formalities. Sir Curtly Ambrose brings out that coveted Trophy and places it on the podium. Players from both sides have lined up for their national anthems. It will be the national anthem of South Africa followed by that of USA.

The skipper of South Africa, Aiden Markram says this looks like a good pitch and they weren’t sure what to do had they won the toss so they are not too bothered by it. Informs that they have gone with an extra-spinner hence Keshav Maharaj gets into the XI and replaces Ottneil Baartman. Mentions that the change is purely because of the condition and Ottneil Baartman is unlucky to miss out today.

Aaron Jones, the stand-in skipper of USA says that they will bowl first. Reckons it will be a good wicket and if anything, the seamers will get the most out of it right at the start. Informs that they are going in with the extra spinner. Adds that the wicket seems similar to Dallas and it will play well and will look to bowl well upfront. Monank Patel is still missing out due to a shoulder injury.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock (WK), Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram (C), Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj (replaces Ottneil Baartman), Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi.

USA (Playing XI) - Steven Taylor, Shayan Jahangir, Andries Gous (WK), Aaron Jones (C), Nitish Kumar, Corey Anderson, Harmeet Singh, Jessy Singh, Nosthush Kenjige (replaces Shadley van Schalkwyk), Ali Khan, Saurabh Netravalkar.

TOSS - The stand-in skipper of USA, Aaron Jones has won the coin flip and he informs that they will BOWL first.

South Africa on the other hand have arrived in the Super 8 with a 100 percent win record. They set the tone right from the get-go as they demolished Sri Lanka to start their campaign. The side then defeated the other three sides in their group but none of those victories were convincing. The batters have had a torrid time playing in the States and failed to adjust to the conditions in the Windies in their last game but they would be delighted to move to the Windies for the remaining games. The bowling has looked superb for them with Anrich Nortje gaining some form while others doing the clean-up around him but it is the batting that needs to step up and take some responsibility now. The likes of Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen and Reeza Hendricks have yet to score something significant while the form of David Miller and Tristan Stubbs, in particular, has been a positive for them. The Proteas would be aiming for a perfect start to the Super 8s while USA would be eyeing another upset in the tournament. Stay tuned for toss and team updates…

It’s been a fabulous past couple of months for USA in the history of cricket as they won a bilateral series against Bangladesh in preparation for this World Cup and when the time arrived they defeated Canada and Pakistan to advance to the Super 8. They had a fair bit of luck their way as well with them earning a crucial point against Ireland in their last group-stage game. The side has showcased its gritty nature and has won those crunch moments in their first two games. Skipper Monank Patel has led the side brilliantly and has impressed all with the way he has marshaled his troops. Steven Taylor, Andries Gous, Aaron Jones and Nitish Kumar have batted well while Corey Anderson and Harmeet Singh are yet to shine as finishers. One of the stories of this World Cup has been the way Saurabh Netravalkar has performed and scalped the big fishes throughout the tournament so far. Ali Khan, Nosthush Kenjige and Jessy Singh have given Saurabh Netravalkar the much-needed support from the other end. The team looks balanced and they would be itching to rub shoulders against the Proteas.

Hello and welcome to all our esteemed viewers. The group stages are done and now we are left with 8 teams in 2 groups of 4 each. The first game of the Super 8 will be played between the co-hosts USA and South Africa. Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua will host this mouth-watering encounter.

Sir Vivian Richards Stadium of North Sound, Antigua will play host to this exciting clash. The co-hosts, USA, have enjoyed a dream run so far, surpassing expectations with their impressive performances. However, their challenge has now further elevated as the competition intensifies, and the diversity of opponents escalates in this critical phase. Their journey began with a resounding triumph over their northern neighbors, Canada, but the real blockbuster moment came when they outclassed and outfoxed the tournament's runner-up, Pakistan, in a Super Over thriller that had the cricketing world on the edge of their seats. That victory was a true announcement of their arrival on the global cricketing landscape. Despite a setback against the formidable Indian side, the USA's resilience and fighting spirit were undeniable. Saurabh Netravalkar has been the standout performer with the ball, gaining all the praise and attention from across the cricketing world for his skillful bowling, while he has been complemented pretty well by his fellow pacers, Ali Khan and Jessy Singh. The spin duo of Nosthush Kenjige and Harmeet Singh have also played their part, being decently economical and providing valuable support to the pace attack. Aaron Jones has shouldered the bulk of the responsibility with the bat, displaying immaculate resistance and doing the heavy lifting with his resolute knocks. Complementing him have been the dynamic skipper Monank Patel and Steven Taylor, who have provided steady starts on the tricky and slow tracks. Andries Gous and Nitish Kumar have further bolstered the middle order and then there’s Corey Anderson who boasts the ability to play those crucial clutch knocks in the backend coupled with bowling crucial overs. Overall, their batting unit has looked impressive and it would interesting to see how they resist against the formidable Proteas pace quartet that has been consistent so far. Anrich Nortje has regained his form and is literally darting thunderbolts and taking crucial wickets. The others, Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Ottneil Baartman have given no respite for the batters either. While their spin attack has floated between crafty Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi, no one can deny the havoc they can wreak, especially on spin-friendly tracks of the Caribbean. South Africa's batting order has been a cause for concern. The form of their skipper, Aiden Markram, has been a worrying factor. Additionally, the usually reliable opening duo of Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks have been in sort of a lean patch, leaving the team's batting unit searching for consistent contributions. In the midst of this, the silver lining has been David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen, who have emerged as the saviors, shouldering the responsibility of rescuing them time and again with their gritty, resolute knocks. However, once this batting unit finds its rhythm, there’s no stopping it as these blokes can go all guns blazing, to their reputation. While Antigua too, hasn't been friendly for the batters, as evident with the low-scoring encounters of the group phase, it’s a battle against the South African pace battery versus the in-form batting unit of the USA. Who do you think will win?
