Commentary

Right then, that is it from this one-sided affair where West Indies thrashed the USA to stay alive in the World Cup. Next up, it is another big clash as two Asian rivals, India and Bangladesh go against each other. That will begin at 8 pm IST (2.30 pm GMT), but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Rovman Powell, the victorious skipper of West Indies says that it’s a special win for them and to get it at the Mecca of cricket in the Caribbean makes it even better. Adds that Roston Chase plays a critical role for them with the ball. Lauds Shai Hope who has been fantastic for them and adds to the strength of the team. Shares that South Africa should be a very good game. Ends by adding that it’s special to play cricket in Barbados as the fans always turn up to support them.

Aaron Jones, the captain of the USA says that it was a tough game for them. Adds that they thought 170-180 would have been a good score against West Indies. Mentions that losing wickets in the middle overs didn't help them and while defending, they tried to pick up early wickets but it didn't happen. Says that they will reflect on this and then come back stronger in the next match against England and reckons that will be a good game. Ends by saying that the fans have been fantastic, and it was good to see a lot of support for them here.

Roston Chase is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his fine bowling spell. He says that he is happy to put in his best bowling effort in front of his home fans and with this family around. Adds that he tried to bowl wicket to wicket and it paid dividends. Mentions that he likes to field at point as it allows him to keep in the game. Shares that he enjoys playing in Barbados and it’s a lovely feeling to play at home. Ends by adding that their destiny and goal is to win the World Cup and they need to beat the teams that come their way.

Presentation Time...

Not much to say about the bowling effort of the USA as they have taken a pelting at the hands of the home team here. Harmeet Singh picked up the only wicket that fell, but they did not have any answer to the onslaught from Shai Hope who smashed it all around the park. Earlier in the game, the USA posted a below-par score. Andries Gous top-scored with 29 while a few batters chipped in with some cameos. Roston Chase and Andre Russell both picked up three wickets each while Alzarri Joseph got two and Gudakesh Motie chipped in with one as well.

West Indies knew that they not only needed to win but also to chase this down quickly to improve their NRR. Johnson Charles struggled once again but Shai Hope was absolutely superb in the Powerplay and made sure that they fully utilized the field restrictions. He registered one of the fastest fifties in this World Cup, but Charles holed out trying to up the ante. Nicholas Pooran joined in and continued to attack as they didn't really have any other option. Both of them went hammer and tons and finished the game off in a blink of an eye. Hope remained unbeaten on 82 off just 39 balls and fittingly hit the winning runs as they chased this total down with just over 9 overs left.

WEST INDIES KEEPS THEIR WORLD CUP HOPES ALIVE! They have done it in some style as well thrashing the USA here in Barbados. The fans have got their money's worth to see their home team perform in this manner. The Windies have also improved their NRR above South Africa which boosts their chances further given that they beat the Proteas in the next game.

Commentary

Welcome back. The players and umpires return to the park. Shai Hope and Johnson Charles stride out to open for the West Indies. Saurabh Netravalkar has the ball in hand for the USA. Here we go!

…THE RUN CHASE…

Right then, West Indies need 129 for the win and the home side will be confident of getting this total. How soon can they chase it or will the USA spring in a surprise? We shall find out. Join us in a while for the second essay.

Andre Russell is up for a chat. He says it felt good and it is nice to start on a positive note. Adds that they had a few discussions about what went wrong in the last game. Mentions that he told the bowlers to back their best balls and not panic even if they get hit. Says that he is happy that they kept their calm and restricted their opponents to a low total and hopes that the batters can chase this down quickly.

For the West Indies, Andre Russell and Roston Chase were the standout bowlers with three wickets each while Alzarri Joseph with two and Motie with one were the other wicket-takers. The innings never got going for the USA after the powerplay. West Indies choked them and made the run-scoring difficult. The West Indian bowlers have done their job and the onus will now be on the batting unit to chase this as early as possible. Remember, a win will keep the West Indies alive in the competition. A loss today and the Men in Maroon are out of the competition.

A professional bowling effort from the West Indies has restricted the USA to 128 in their 20 overs. Having sent into bat first, USA lost Steven Taylor early but Nitish Kumar and Andries Gous added 48 for the second wicket and steadied the innings. The dismissal of Nitish Kumar allowed West Indies to get back as they kept taking wickets at regular intervals. Milind Kumar and Shadley van Schalkwyk got starts but failed to carry on. Ali Khan threw his bat in the end and stuck a few lusty blows to take the USA past the 125-run mark.

19.5W

OUT! TAKEN! A stunning catch to end the innings! Andre Russell takes pace off and serves this full, on middle and leg, Saurabh Netravalkar goes for the big lofted shot but mistimes it towards long on, Rovman Powell runs forward and dives in to take a spectacular catch with the ball dying on him. USA have been bowled out for 128!

19.40

Short of a length and outside off, Saurabh Netravalkar looks to cut but misses again.

19.30

Very full this time around off, shaping away, Saurabh Netravalkar is very late to put his bat down and misses.

19.21

Back of a length and on off, Ali Khan has a wild swipe across the line but only manages to toe-end it towards long off for a single.

19.12

Slower one, on a length and on middle, Ali Khan heaves it wide of deep square leg for a brace.

19.5W

Andre Russell takes pace off and serves this full, on middle and leg, Saurabh Netravalkar goes for the big lofted shot but mistimes it towards long on, Rovman Powell runs forward and dives in to take a spectacular catch with the ball dying on him. Done with the pre-match formalities! We can see the West Indies players in a huddle and now they spread out to take their respective field positions. Steven Taylor and Andries Gous are the two openers for the USA. Akeal Hosein has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

We are just moments away from the start of the battle between the hosts but before that, the players from both sides make their way out to the middle and line up for their respective national anthems. It will be USA's first followed by the national anthem of West Indies.

PITCH REPORT - Samuel Badree is pitchside. He says the weather is a bit overcast and hopes the rain stays away. Adds that the square boundaries are 62 and 64 meters and the straight hit is 74 meters. Tells that there is also a strong wind blowing across the ground. Wasim Akram joins him and says that the pitch is as hard as a rock and will also turn a bit. Reckons that if the team batting first can score around 160-165 runs, they will have an advantage here.

Aaron Jones, the USA skipper, says that he expects to get a lot of support in Barbados. Adds that they want to play fearless and aggressive cricket. Mentions that they have played positive cricket and they hope to get a good score. Ends by sharing the teams’ changes with Shadley van Schalkwyk coming in for Jessy Singh and Milind Kumar replacing Shayan Jahangir.

Rovman Powell, the West Indies skipper, says that they will bowl first. Adds that the wicket looks good and they want to exploit it early on and then chase it down. Tells that they still have their destiny in their own hands, play two good games of cricket and they are in the semis.  Mentions that they have played well as a batting unit in the last few months and this game gives another opportunity to any of the batters to go on and score big. Informs they have made a couple of changes. Obed McCoy and Shai Hope come in for Romario Shepherd and Brandon King.

West Indies (Playing XI) - Johnson Charles, Shai Hope (in for Brandon King), Nicholas Pooran (WK), Roston Chase, Rovman Powell (C), Sherfane Rutherford, Andre Russell, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Obed McCoy (in for Romario Shepherd).

USA (Playing XI) - Steven Taylor, Andries Gous (WK), Nitish Kumar, Aaron Jones (C), Corey Anderson, Milind Kumar (in for Shayan Jahangir), Harmeet Singh, Shadley van Schalkwyk (in for Jessy Singh), Nosthush Kenjige, Ali Khan, Saurabh Netravalkar.

Toss Update - Rovman Powell has won the toss and West Indies will BOWL first.

UPDATE - A dampener to start our coverage as the covers are on in Barbados and the Toss is delayed. It's currently not raining so let's hope we can get some action soon.

The news coming in from the West Indies camp is that Brandon King is ruled out for the rest of the tournament owing to a side strain. Kyle Mayers replaces him in the squad.

On the flip side, the USA came in the Super 8s on the back of playing some outstanding cricket through the group stage. Facing the Proteas in the first game of the Super 8 stage, the USA did well to keep South Africa under 200 with Harmeet Singh and Saurabh Netravalkar sharing 2 wickets each. During the chase, Andries Gous played a brilliant knock of 80 off 57 while Harmeet Singh chipped in with 38. The USA played well but fell short by 18 runs in the end. Both sides are in a must-win territory. A win will keep their chances alive for the semis while a loss will most probably end their campaign in the competition. West Indies go in as favourites but the USA cannot be taken lightly at all. Let’s see which team holds their nerves and comes out victorious. Toss and team news in a bit. Stay tuned!

Hello and a warm welcome to our coverage of Match 6 in the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup, 2024. It’s the battle of the host nations where the USA takes on the West Indies at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. Both sides are coming off losses in their opening game of the Super 8 stage and will want to turn around their campaign. West Indies came unbeaten from the group stage but were hammered at the hands of England by 8 wickets. Batting first, the Men in Maroon scored 180 on the back of runs from Johnson Charles, Nicholas Pooran, and Rovman Powell while Sherfane Rutherford played a crucial cameo down the order. With the ball, the West Indies kept it tight till the halfway mark in the chase but leaked runs in plenty after that and lost by 8 wickets.

…MATCHDAY…

The Super 8 stage of the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup continues with the West Indies and the USA facing off at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. Both host teams are seeking their first points of the Super 8 campaign after suffering defeats in their previous matches. The West Indies' unbeaten run at the World Cup came to an end at the hands of the defending champions, England, and their NRR has taken a hit as well. After being put into bat, they could never really hit the top gear and could only manage 180, which was chased by England with 15 balls to spare. Johnson Charles and Nicholas Pooran had laboured stays at the crease, while Rovman Powell could not go and make his start count. To add to their woes, Brandon King, who retired hurt with a side strain in the game against England, has been ruled out for the remainder of the competition, with Kyle Mayers named his replacement. Andre Russell has not fired with the bat to his full potential, and the Windies' fans will be hoping that he comes to the party sooner rather than later. On the bowling front, the spin trio of Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie, and Roston Chase have performed as a unit, but there have been issues with the pace department. Playing Alzarri Joseph as the frontline pacer has left him with a lot to do, and bringing Obed McCoy or Shamar Joseph at the expense of Romario Shepherd might be the way to go. As for the USA, they have punched above their weight, and although some results may not have gone their way, they have shown that they are no pushovers. In their last outing against South Africa, they put up a spirited chase but fell short by 18 runs. The batting department has keenly felt the absence of their skipper, Monank Patel, and his potential return will serve as a much-needed boost to their resources. Aaron Jones and Andries Gous have shown glimpses of promise, but the likes of Steven Taylor, Nitish Kumar, and Corey Anderson, who have not had a significant impact, will have to deliver. Whether it be with the new ball or at the death, Saurabh Netravalkar has stood tall and has done so while being economical. If the USA are to take down the batting might, it will require a collective effort from Ali Khan, Harmeet Singh, and Jessy Singh. A loss for either team will put them in a precarious position, nearing elimination from the tournament. Who are you backing to come out on top in this clash?
