Commentary

Right then, that will be it from us for this contest. We hope you enjoyed the coverage. The action continues at the T20 World Cup as Bangladesh takes on the Netherlands on June 13th at the Arnos Vale Ground in St Vincent. That game will start at 8 pm IST (2.30 pm GMT). But you can join early for all the build-up. Until then, take care and cheers!

The West Indies skipper, Rovman Powell says that he is very happy with the performance. Feels that individual brilliance is crucial on such surfaces. Adds that Sherfane Rutherford's knock gave them confidence and belief. States that they watched what the New Zealand bowlers did well and tried to replicate the hard lengths. Further says that the talk was to hit the hard length. Credits the bowlers for the way they bowled with the wet ball. Ends by saying that it was unfortunate that some of their batters could not get going, but he is glad to get the win.

Kane Williamson, the New Zealand skipper, says that it was a tricky surface and the bowlers did a good job. Lauds Sherfane Rutherford for his knock. Adds that that the batting depth was beneficial for West Indies and that they had some tough overs at the backend. Mentions that the wicket kept going up and down but the team did a fine job to adapt. Reckons that they tried to make the best of the preparation. Ends by sharing that they need to bounce back quickly in the last two games and take the learnings as they have to pick themselves and get back.

Sherfane Rutherford is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his rescue act with the bat. He starts by thanking the Almighty. Shares that even though he did not play for his Indian T20 League franchise, he was preparing there for this tournament. He says that it was about keeping things simple and backing his skills. Adds that he kept telling himself to take it deep. States he knew he could make it up in the end once he started to get into rhythm. Further says that he knew that New Zealand were 2 overs short and that if he stayed there, he could score maximum runs off those 2 overs. Hopes that the team can keep the momentum.

Time for the Presentation...

Earlier in the day, West Indies were sent into bat first and were reeling at 76 for 7 in the 13th over. Sherfane Rutherford scripted a comeback for the ages as he made handy partnerships with Russell, Hosein, and Shepherd to take his side out of troubled waters. Rutherford smashed an unbeaten 68 off just 39 and single-handedly took his side to a competitive score of 149. Trent Boult was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers with three wickets while Southee and Ferguson snapped a couple. New Zealand started well with the ball but gave away plenty of runs at the backend and were never in the game with the bat. New Zealand have suffered back-to-back losses and will need a miracle to progress into the Super 8s. If Afghanistan win their next game against PNG, that will be the end of Super 8 stage qualification hopes for the Kiwis.

Defending the score, West Indian bowlers applied the pressure from the word go and never allowed the Black Caps to get easy runs. Akeal Hosein picked up the early wicket of Devon Conway after which Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Motie put a stranglehold on the Kiwi batting through the middle stages of the game. Alzarri Joseph with four and Gudakesh Motie with three were the stand-out bowlers for the Men in Maroon as they make it three out of three in the group stage with a game to go.

WEST INDIES ARE THROUGH TO THE SUPER 8 STAGE OF THE T20 WORLD CUP! An outstanding comeback from the West Indies sees them defeat New Zealand by 13 runs. Chasing 150 for the win, New Zealand lost Devon Conway early but Finn Allen stuck a few lusty blows and kept up with the required rate. The home side came back strong and had New Zealand reeling at 63 for 5 in the 11th over. Glenn Phillips with 40 off 33 tried hard but lacked the support from other batters. Mitchell Santner stuck three maximums in the final over but it was all too late for the Black Caps as they finished on 136 for 9.

He swings but gets a leading edge that goes straight up and behind the bowler. Joseph turns around and runs across to his right to take a well-judged catch. A golden duck for Tim Southee as the West Indies strengthen their grip on the game.

Joseph responds by pulling his length back and bowls it over middle and leg, Glenn Phillips backs away and opens himself up to flat-bat this one down the ground. Commentary

Welcome back for the second essay. Rovman Powell leads his troops out to the middle and they are followed by the two Kiwi openers. It will be the left-hand right-hand combination of Devon Conway and Finn Allen to open the innings for New Zealand. West Indies are starting with spin in the form of Akeal Hosein. A slip in place. Let's play...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, the West Indies will be the happier of the two sides at the halfway mark, and they have momentum with them courtesy of the strong finish with the bat. On a surface that has been anything but true with variable bounce on offer, Rovman Powell will be confident enough that his bowlers can defend the total. New Zealand are right up against it in what is a virtual knockout game for them, and it will require a collective effort to get over the line. Back in a bit for the chase.

Sherfane Rutherford, the man of the moment, is up for a chat. He says that he is happy to get the opportunity and is pleased to contribute. Adds that playing the World Cup is a dream and he wants to contribute to the side. Shares that it was important to build small partnership and ends by mentioning that 149 is a great score on this wicket.

As for New Zealand, all the hard work got undone there towards the end, conceding 37 runs in the last couple of overs and that has resulted in a dramatic shift in momentum. As he has done so often, Trent Boult set things in motion with a wicket in his first over. New Zealand were able to build on that scalp as Tim Southee, who was brought into the side for this game, struck twice in his opening spell. Thereon, the Kiwis were able to exert pressure even after the Powerplay through Lockie Ferguson and James Neesham. Just as a partnership was threatening to flourish, Mitchell Santner helped them break the stand before Trent Boult got them a massive breakthrough, dismissing Andre Russell. However, the gamble to bowl their main bowlers out, leaving them to finish with Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner proved to be too costly.

TAKE A BOW, SHERFANE RUTHERFORD! A remarkable rescue act from the southpaw has allowed the West Indies to recover from 76-7 to end up with 149. However, the start was far from ideal for the co-hosts, as they were rocked early with the departure of Johnson Charles. Nicholas Pooran threw his bat around but not for long and from there, West Indies kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Sherfane Rutherford and Akeal Hosein got together to steady the sinking ship and did a decent job. After Akeal fell, Andre Russell teed off from ball one but his stay was short-lived. Rutherford then joined hands with the lower order to provide the finishing kick. He was unfazed by the loss of wickets at the other end and turned the heat on in the last couple of overs. Rutherford took Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner apart and through a blistering 39-ball 68 has helped West Indies reach 149.

Done with the pre-match formalities. All set now. The players and umpires make their way to the middle. Brandon King and Johnson Charles will open for West Indies. It will be Trent Boult with the ball in hand for New Zealand. Let's play...

All in readiness now as the teams and match officials stride out for the National Anthems. We begin with the anthem of New Zealand followed by that of co-hosts, West Indies. Action is not far away.

PITCH REPORT - Simon Doull and Samuel Badree are near the deck. They reckon that some pockets are bigger with 65 metres and 67 metres square boundaries and a 74-metre hit straight down the ground. They further mention that there was torrential rainfall yesterday but the ground staff have done very well to get the ground in pristine shape. Share that it’s a recently re-laid surface and the average first innings score is 162. Reckon that there is patchiness on the surface and there might be variable bounce. They feel that West Indies will try to get around 180.

The skipper of the West Indies, Rovman Powell says that they would have bowled first as well. On not being able to practice due to the inclement weather, he says that he is okay with it as the guys in the team come on the back of a lot of cricket and rest is also important. Tells that they want to keep on improving in all 3 areas and there are a few boxes to be ticked in the batting department. Also says that they want to control their Powerplay bowling. Ends by informing that they are going with the same team as the last game.

Kane Williamson, the New Zealand skipper, says that they will have a bowl as there are a few unknowns in the surface. Adds that they haven’t had a lot of practice time with the weather around. Shares that it is about committing to their job and doing what they are good at. Ends by mentioning the three changes with James Neesham in for Michael Bracewell, Tim Southee in for Matt Henry, and Rachin Ravindra coming in for Mark Chapman.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Finn Allen, Devon Conway (WK), Kane Williamson (C), Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra (In for Mark Chapman), James Neesham (In for Michael Bracewell), Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee (In for Matt Henry), Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult.

West Indies (Unchanged Playing XI) - Johnson Charles, Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran (WK), Roston Chase, Rovman Powell (C), Sherfane Rutherford, Andre Russell, Romario Shepherd, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie.

TOSS - The coin toss lands in the favour of New Zealand and they have opted to BOWL first.

As for the 2022 semi-finalists, New Zealand, they have had a rocky start and are teetering on the edge of elimination early in the tournament. After looking disjointed as a unit in their opening match, it's now or never for the Kiwis to get their act together. Kane Williamson will need to lead from the front, supported by Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell in the batting lineup. The pace trio of Trent Boult, Matt Henry, and Lockie Ferguson will play crucial roles, alongside spinner Mitchell Santner, as New Zealand fight to stay in contention. Will this high-pressure situation bring out the best in the Kiwis? Let's find out as we await the toss and team news.

The West Indies have launched their quest for a third Men's T20 World Cup title with two commanding victories. Now, the real test awaits as they face critical matches against New Zealand and Afghanistan. Their bowling unit, yet to face a stern challenge, will depend on performances from Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie, and Alzarri Joseph. In the batting lineup, success lies with players like Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran, Johnson Charles, and Rovman Powell, while the explosive Andre Russell is ready to make his mark with both bat and ball.

Hello and a warm welcome, everyone! The 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup has arrived in Trinidad, and what a mouthwatering prospect we have in front of us as the West Indies take on New Zealand at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. A lot is riding on this game, more so for New Zealand with their tournament life on the line, and a defeat here will push them even closer to the exit door, whereas the West Indies can qualify for the Super 8 stage with a win.

... MATCH DAY ...
