Commentary

That's it then from this game and what a fascinating day of cricket we had! The two teams in Group B who had lost a game won this time around and the two who had points on the board finished on the losing side, throwing this group wide open. Action in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, 2022 will continue on Thursday, the 20th of October with another double-header. Sri Lanka will take on the Netherlands in the first game of the day at 9.30 am IST (4 am GMT) followed by a clash between Namibia and the United Arab Emirates at 1.30 pm IST (8 am GMT). You can join us in advance for the build-up of both games. Cheers!

Nicholas Pooran, the captain of West Indies, says that they had a chat regarding their batting as enough was enough and the batters have to take more responsibility. He sounds happy with the way Rovman Powell and Akeal Hosein formed a partnership. On his plan to bowl Kyle Mayers up front, Pooran replies that he is the one who swings the ball but he failed to get it right. Pooran counts on the experience of Jason Holder and heaps his praise on Alzarri Joseph who has been in exceptional form since the beginning of 2022. Pooran is disappointed with his personal form and says that he is working hard. Hopes to find his form in the next game.

Regis Chakabva, the stand-in captain of Zimbabwe, says that his bowlers stuck to the plans and hit the right areas, especially the spinners. Further says that they tried to rush through the overs and praises his bowlers for pulling things back. Mentions that they were happy to restrict West Indies to 150-odd runs but credits Joseph for the way he bowled. Shares that the pitch played very well and the conditions remained the same throughout. Tells that they are still confident and will look to bounce back.

Alzarri Joseph is the Player of the Match for his career-best figures in T20Is - 4-0-16-0. The speedster says that this win is very encouraging but wants to stay focused and win the next match as well. Tells that he always tries to keep it tight and pick early wickets. Shares that he is working on his lengths and it depends on the batters. Mentions that the team performed brilliantly.

The Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Nicholas Pooran won the toss and opted to bat first and the top order did get off to a decent start. Kyle Mayers and Evin Lewis both fell after getting into double figures but Johnson Charles managed to hit his way out of trouble. The middle order yet again disappointed but Rovman Powell did manage to get in a few big hits towards the fag end of the innings which ensured that the Windies got a defendable total on board. Blessing Muzarabani and Sikandar Raza starred with the ball for Zimbabwe with Sean Williams bowling decently as well. In reply, Zimbabwe had a batting collapse after getting off to a quick start with the likes of Alzarri Joseph and Jason Holder taking full advantage of the opportunity handed to them. In the end, it was a comfortable enough victory for West Indies.

West Indies seem to have turned on a new leaf with this victory and the manner in which they have got over the line will give them a lot of self-belief. They managed to get over 150 runs and then came the hostility from Alzarri Joseph who was simply sensational. The likes of Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein and Obed McCoy too bowled well in the middle phase and kept on picking up wickets. Joseph finished with 4 wickets and Holder ended with 3 as he got the final wicket as well. West Indies have the points on the board and will go into their final group game with momentum on their side.

Zimbabwe will be mightily disappointed with the way they lost the game. They couldn't finish on a high with the ball but with the bat, they started off in fine fashion with both Wesley Madhevere and Regis Chakabva getting out of the box quickly. Chakabva did fall soon but Madhevere kept on attacking. Once Tony Munyonga fell, Zimbabwe completely lost the plot and gave away 4 wickets for just 17 runs and that put them under a lot of pressure. There was a late onslaught from Luke Jongwe that breathed life back into the chase but it wasn't enough.

What a turnaround it has been for West Indies as they have turned despair into victory. With the Windies winning this game, Group B is set for a thrilling final day with all four teams sitting on 2 points each.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The umpires are out in the middle as the West Indian players can be seen in a huddle. Skipper Regis Chakabva and Wesley Madhevere are the openers for Zimbabwe. Kyle Mayers will get proceedings underway with the ball for West Indies.

... The Run Chase ...

West Indies need wickets with the new ball to defend this total and stay alive in this edition's ICC Men's T20 World Cup. While Zimbabwe need to bat with intent, they will require their top order to step up this evening. Should be a riveting chase. Stay tuned...

The Zimbabwean bowlers were unable to use the new ball to their advantage. However, once the ball got old, the spinners came into play and that triggered a mini-collapse. Sikandar Raza was Zimbabwe’s most effective bowler accounting for 3 wickets while the rest of the bowlers also put in a decent effort.

Opting to bat first, the West Indian openers got their side off to a decent start. Johnson Charles held the innings together for them. At 97-3, when West Indies were starting to slow down and needed him to stay there in the middle, a mix-up between him and Powell resulted in his untimely departure. West Indies kept losing wickets at regular intervals from there and as a result, couldn’t really recover from that collapse. The stand between Rovman Powell and Akeal Hosein though helped them to a total with which they can at least fight.

Right then, a couple of lusty blows in the final over and West Indies have managed to post a target above 150. Having chosen to bat first, Pooran will be somewhat disappointed with his side’s effort with the bat. Zimbabwe, on the flip side, will certainly be happy with the fightback from their bowlers as at one stage, West Indies were in a dominant position.

19.61

Excellent delivery to end by Blessing Muzarabani. The giant bowler nails the yorker on the leg stump line, Odean Smith just about manages to jam it out on the off side and they scamper through for one. West Indies finish with 153/7 on the board.

19.52lb

TWO LEG BYES! Slower one, on a fuller length and angling into the pads. Odean Smith looks to back away and flick it leg side but misses. The ball hits the pads and goes past the stumps and past the diving keeper towards third man. The fielder in the deep picks it up as the batters come back for two runs.

Odean Smith arrives with two legal balls left.

19.4W

OUT! TAKEN! The change of length has worked for Blessing Muzarabani and he gets his revenge on Rovman Powell, who has done the damage though. This is pitched up around the off stump and Powell yet again looks to whack it across the line. Powell loses his shape and ends up slicing it high and towards the extra cover region. Richard Ngarava over there moves to his left and keeps his eyes on the ball before pouching it safely. Powell departs after a few lusty blows and Muzarabani has his second wicket.

19.36

SIX! OUTTA HERE! Another short ball by Blessing Muzarabani and Rovman Powell is just waiting for it. Powell stands tall and just smokes it a long way over the mid-wicket fence. That hit went a massive 104 meters, staggering!

19.31wd

WIDE! An attempted yorker at the toes but it is spilled down the leg side. Wided.

19.20

Swing and a miss! Fuller and close to the off stump. Rovman Powell hangs deep and has a wild swing across the line but loses his shape and fails to make any sort of connection with the ball.

19.16

SIX! Smashed away! Short ball, over middle but it doesn't rise high enough. Rovman Powell muscles it flat over the square leg fence for a maximum. Good start to the over for the Windies.

18.51

This is in the blockhole, around off and angling away. Powell tries to get under it but only manages to hit it to wide long on for a run.

18.42

A slight fumble and they get two. A low full toss, around off, Rovman Powell drags it towards wide long on and a slight misfield by the fielder over there allows the batters to come back for two.

18.31

Lucky! Richard Ngarava attempts the yorker but ends up serving a high full toss on off stump. Akeal Hosein backs away and only manages to get it off the inner half of the bat towards deep mid-wicket for a single.

18.24

FOUR! Up and over! Slower one, on a hard length and around off. Hosein picks it up and thumps it over mid off to pick up a much-needed boundary for his side.

18.10

Good aggression from Richard Ngarava. This is a bumper, around off and rises up high as well. Hosein looks to leap and cut it away but misses.

17.42

Fuller and on middle, Akeal Hosein drills it back past the bowler for a couple of runs.

17.31

DROPPED! A difficult chance for Luke Jongwe and Rovman Powell escapes. Banged in short again by Blessing Muzarabani and at a good height as well. This is around off and Rovman Powell looks to take it on as he attempts the cross-batted shot. Powell gets hurried on and the ball comes off the splice of the bat and goes over the cover region. Jongwe tries to circle back and puts in the dive but the ball eludes him. A single is taken.

17.21

On a hard length and angling across the left-hander. Hosein swings at it again and gets an outside edge down to third man for a run.

17.10

Nicely bowled! Blessing Muzarabani goes full and wide and opts for the slower one. Akeal Hosein hangs deep in his crease, trying to whack it across the line but is completely undone by the lack of pace.

17.12nb

NO BALL! This is banged in short and outside off, Powell fetches it and swats it towards wide long on for a single. Blessing Muzarabani has overstepped and it will be a Free Hit for West Indies.

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! Misery continues for West Indies! Sikandar Raza is having a ball in his career, be it with the bat or ball. What a superstar! Flighted delivery, full and on middle, Holder gets forward with his giant stride and tries to flick. He fails to close the face in time and the leading edge sends the ball lobbing to the right of the bowler. Sikandar Raza takes an easy catch and sends West Indies further on the back foot. He finishes his spell, 4-0-19-3.

13.52

Flighted and full, outside off, Holder drives it towards point where the fielder dives but fails to make a clean stop. They get another two runs. 100 up!

13.42

Plays late at it! A touch short and around off, Holder goes back and runs it down wide of short third man. They collect two runs.

Jason Holder walks in next.

13.3W

OUT! LBW! Sikandar Raza bowls this one quicker and flatter, darting it in on middle. Shamarh Brooks gets pushed onto the back foot as he tries to keep it out but misses and gets pinged on the pads. Another shout for LBW and this time it is given. Shamarh Brooks has immediately reviewed it though. There is no spike on the UltraEdge and the Ball Tracking comes up with three reds. The on-field decision stands and West Indies are in a spot of bother here as Raza picks up his second wicket.

13.20

Half an appeal for LBW but it is turned down. Shorter and around leg stump, Brooks looks to pull but misses and gets hit on the pads. Too high.

13.10

OUT! RUN OUT! Calamity for West Indies, they lose their set batter in Johnson Charles. Rovman Powell stares at his partner who returns disappointed. Coming to the delivery, it's short and wide outside off, Rovman Powell rocks back and cuts it towards point. He takes a few steps forward, and Johnson Charles comes speeding down the track. Powell stops and seeing that Charles also tries to put the brakes. To his bad luck though, he slips. Meanwhile, Tony Munyonga has thrown the ball to the bowler who takes the bails off at his end. Things going from bad to worse for the two-time champions.

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! Pooran is down and out, literally. Smart bowling from Williams. He gives his delivery no air, bowls it with the seam up as he arrows it in around middle. Pooran, with a predetermined charge, hurries down the track to flick it on the leg side but fails to close the face of his bat in time. The West Indian skipper falls in the process and the ball lobs back to the bowler. Williams accepts a simple catch gleefully and West Indies are in deep trouble now.

Drinks break. Just when the last partnership started to look dangerous, Zimbabwe struck to send Evin Lewis back. It has been good going from both teams. West Indies started cautiously before pulling the trigger but then Zimbabwe also slowed things down after the Powerplay. The Caribbean team regained some momentum after a 16-run 9th over but losing Lewis means that they will have to build again. Nicholas Pooran is the next batter.

OUT! CAUGHT! A real long hop from Sikandar Raza but it brings him a wicket! This is dragged down around middle stump and begging to be hit. Evin Lewis stays deep in his crease and looks to pull it over the long on fence. Lewis gets no timing whatsoever on it and ends up just lofting it down to long on. Done with the pre-game formalities and it is now time to get play underway. The umpires are out in the middle and so are the players. The Zimbabwean fielders take their places as Kyle Mayers and Johnson Charles stride out to open the batting for West Indies. The players take a knee in order to show their support for the BLM movement. Richard Ngarava has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

We are minutes away from the start of play but first, the two teams line up for their respective national anthems. It will be Zimbabwe's national anthem first followed by the national anthem of the West Indies.

Pitch report - The surface is still a good one for batting. The slower deliveries were gripping well in the game played prior to this one and the bowlers will have to use all their expertise to succeed here. Dew could be a problem later on.

Regis Chakabva, the stand-in skipper of Zimbabwe, says that it looks like a good wicket and is not too disappointed to bowl first. Informs that Craig Ervine is unwell and will miss this game with Tony Munyonga replacing him. Reckons that they need to bowl well and restrict West Indies to a smaller total.

Nicholas Pooran, the captain of West Indies, says that they will bat first in this must-win game, put runs on the board and put pressure on Zimbabwe. Adds that it was a bad performance last time but it's a new day and a new opportunity for them. Mentions that his batters need to step up. Informs that there is one forced change, Johnson Charles comes in, replacing Brandon King.

Zimbabwe (Playing XI) - Regis Chakabva (C/WK), Tony Munyonga (In for Craig Ervine), Wesley Madhevere, Sean Williams, Sikandar Raza, Milton Shumba, Ryan Burl, Luke Jongwe, Tendai Chatara, Richard Ngarava, and Blessing Muzarabani.

West Indies (Playing XI) - Kyle Mayers, Evin Lewis, Johnson Charles (In for Brandon King), Nicholas Pooran (C/WK), Shamarh Brooks, Rovman Powell, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Odean Smith and Obed McCoy.

TOSS - Up goes the coin and it lands in favour of the West Indies and they have elected to BAT first.

Breaking news - Craig Ervine, the captain of Zimbabwe, will miss today's match following a mild asthmatic attack. Regis Chakabva will lead the team in his absence.

What a remarkable finish in the game between Scotland and Ireland as Curtis Campher and George Dockrell rip apart the Scottish attack and seal the win for Ireland with one over remaining. This is Ireland's highest successful run-chase in T20Is and with this win, they have thrown this group wide open. Even more pressure on West Indies now as they are the only team in Group B without any win so far.

In other news, there is already an ongoing match in Group B where Scotland are taking on Ireland. Scotland put on 176 runs on the board. With 24 deliveries remaining, Ireland need 40 more runs for victory and at the moment, it is very difficult to pick a winner. As we wait for the toss in this game, you can switch tabs and enjoy all the action from that game.

A stunning knock by Sikandar Raza and exploits by the pace attack were the difference makers in Zimbabwe's opening game against Ireland but if they are to get that all-important second win, they would need a bit more from their top order. West Indies have a lot to improve upon and all cricketing fans would be expecting the two-time champions to step up and turn the tide in this game. Will they be able to do so? That remains to be seen. Toss and news about both teams coming up shortly...

Hello and a warm welcome! A crucial game awaits in Group B as Zimbabwe take on West Indies. It is really a do-or-die contest for the Windies and it will be a big upset if they lose this game and are all but sent packing from the tournament. Zimbabwe will be looking to carry on their good form from the first game and will have one eye on qualification for the Super 12 stage. Stay tuned for more...
