Commentary
Welcome back for the chase. The umpires are out in the middle. Sri Lanka Women are huddled near the fence, before they take their respective field positions. Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin open up for West Indies Women. Mithali Ayodhya will start with the new ball. Let's go...
... THE RUN CHASE ...
99 should not be difficult - It was a thoroughly clinical bowling performance from the Caribbean side. Skipper Matthews led the charts with her stellar three-wicket haul. Every other West Indies bowler got in on the action, walking away with a wicket apiece. It was an outstanding effort, leaving the West Indies Women with a modest target of 99 runs to victory. Stay tuned, the chase is coming up next!
A quick word - Ashmini Munisar has caught up with Laura McGoldrick. Asked about her first World Cup wicket, Munisar says it felt really good. She reveals that Hayley Matthews reminded her about the achievement afterwards, following which the entire team gathered around her in celebration. Munisar says her approach is always to look for wickets and attack the stumps. She adds that the team's focus throughout the innings was to maintain high energy levels, and the excellent start with the ball helped that momentum carry through the rest of the innings.
Dominance with the ball - There was a brief glimmer of hope as Kavisha Dilhari and Nilakshi Silva dug deep to stabilise the innings. Just as they were starting to look comfortable, Aaliyah Alleyne struck a crucial blow, dismissing Dilhari to leave Sri Lanka at 57/5 at the halfway mark. Nilakshika Silva continued to fight a lone battle, top-scoring with a gritty 30 before falling in the 16th over. A late 17-run cameo from Kawya Kavindi provided some tail-end resistance, but the Sri Lankan lineup was ultimately bundled out for just 98 runs.
Sri Lanka Women have been bowled out for 98! It was an absolute dream start for the West Indies Women, led by none other than their captain, Hayley Matthews. She set the tone immediately, tearing through the Sri Lankan top order with three massive wickets in her first two overs. Sri Lanka found themselves in a mountain of trouble at a dismal 9/3 after just three overs. Chinelle Henry then joined the party in the sixth over, chipping in with another wicket to leave the batting side completely reeling at 23/4 at the end of Powerplay.
OUT! STUMPED! That's all. Sri Lanka Women have been rolled over for 98. A statement effort from West Indies. Tosses it up, does Karishma Ramharack, on middle and leg. Kawya Kavindi shimmies down the track and swings at it to go down the ground. She fails to get to the pitch of the ball, and it spins past the inside edge. Shemaine Campbelle's vision is obstructed by the batter standing in front of her, but she moves to her left nicely, gathers the ball and whips the bails off in a flash. Kawya stands no chance of returning.
A bit of air given, fuller and on off. Nimasha Meepage eases it to the left of the bowler. Karishma Ramharack dives but in vain. The ball rolls to long off for one.
Shorter and flatter, on middle and leg. Kawya swipes it to deep square leg for just a single.
Pushed through, full and on middle. Kawya Kavindi steps out and makes room to go through the off side but picks out the extra cover fielder.
Last over to go. Can Sri Lanka Women push over the 100-run mark? Karishma Ramharack to bowl the final over.

Turning back in, on a good length, on off. Nimasha Meepage defends it watchfully from the crease.
Sri Lanka Women are down to their last wicket now. Nimasha Meepage is the last batter. Also, there is a problem with the bails, and the staff comes in to fix that. All fine now and we are good to go...
OUT! MITHALI AYODHYA IS RUN OUT! Ashmini Munisar tosses it up, on off. Kawya Kavindi uses her feet and slams it on the bounce to extra cover. It is hit straight to Karishma Ramharack there, but still Kawya sets off for the run. Mithali Ayodhya is late to set off and Karishma throws it on the bounce at the batting end. The throw is a bit wide, but Shemaine Campbelle is standing beside the stumps. She stretches to her right to collect the throw and breaks the stumps. The background check confirms that Ayodhya is short despite the desperate dive.
Looped up, on off. Mithali Ayodhya tries to smash it down the ground. She fails to get hold of it but just about manages to clear the leaping bowler for a single.
Shorter and quicker, down leg. Mithali Ayodhya pivots for the pull but wears it on the gloves and the ball drops on the strip.
Floated up, on off. Kavindi drills it to extra cover, where Karishma Ramharack fumbles and concedes a single.
Full and on off. Mithali Ayodhya knocks it to long off and crosses over.
Sri Lanka Women are 93/8 after 18 overs now. Ashmini Munisar to bowl the penultimate.

FOUR! Up and over! First four after 39 balls, informs Alan Wilkins. Flighted delivery, on off. Kawya Kavindi gets on the front foot and swings through the line. Launches it over mid off for a boundary.
Mithali Ayodhya survives. Very full, on middle. Mithali Ayodhya tries to get her bat down and dig it out. The ball sneaks past the inside edge and catches her on the back pad in front of the stumps. The batters cross over as the ball dribbles to short third. Karishma Ramharack is pretty convinced and Hayley Matthews takes the review. The UltraEdge comes up with a spike, confirming the inside edge. The on-field decision stands.
Is that out? The finger has stayed down, though. Karishma Ramharack sends it upstairs. Ultra Edge shows a slight spike, and the onfield decision stays NOT OUT.
Fired in, full and on middle. Mithali Ayodhya pushes it to mid on.
Brilliant work behind the stumps. Mithali Ayodhya is the next batter.
OUT! SUGANDIKA KUMAR IS RUN OUT! Quick work by Shemaine Campbelle. Floated up, on off, Kumari presses forward and goes hard on the drive but ekes out an inside edge onto the front boot. The ball rolls between her and the keeper. Sugandika is unaware of where the ball is but she still sets off for the run. Shemaine Campbelle is alert to the situation as she reaches out in front, picks the ball up and breaks the stumps to catch Kumari short of her crease.
Beaten! Fractionally short, on off. Sugandika Kumari hops back for the cut but is beaten as the ball kicks up to go over the blade.
Sri Lanka Women are 87/7 after 17 overs now. Karishma Ramharack comes into the attack.

Commentary
Onto Manchester - A Sri Lankan win would have thrown Group B wide open, but it was not to be. Their hopes of reaching the semi-finals are still alive, with games against Scotland and Ireland to come, and those are matches they will back themselves to win. However, their poor net run rate does little to help their cause, should it come down to that. That is all from Bristol. Coming up shortly from Manchester is a crunch Group A clash as India take on South Africa. The toss has already taken place, with India opting to bat first. Switch tabs and join us there for all the action. Cheers!
The skipper of West Indies Women - Hayley Matthews says winning the toss was crucial, with the pitch offering a bit of tennis-ball bounce early on, and she was pleased that her side was able to take advantage of those conditions. Adds that there was also a degree of tactical awareness involved, having played Sri Lanka earlier in the year. Matthews feels the decision to play an extra spinner made a significant difference on the day. Reflecting on the chase, she says there were never any real nerves in the dressing room because they bat deep. However, she admits the side would have liked to chase the target a little more convincingly. Hayley says this puts them in a really good position heading into their clash against England. She adds that confidence within the group is high after three wins on the trot, but stresses that the team remains focused on taking it one game at a time.
The captain of Sri Lanka Women - Chamari Athapaththu says that the wicket was a bit sticky today, and West Indies bowled according to the conditions. She adds that they needed 140 on this wicket, but they fell short. She reckons that their bowlers did a good job, but they gave away extras. She further says that 98 was never going to be enough against this West Indies side. She ends by saying that their bowlers did well, but they need to improve on their batting.
Time to hear from the captains...
Damage done up front - With this being the first game of the tournament in Bristol, there was a degree of uncertainty around how the surface would play. However, the West Indies read the conditions superbly and made the most of them after opting to bowl first. It all started with Hayley Matthews, who ripped through the top order to reduce Sri Lanka to 9/3. There was a semblance of a recovery through Kavisha Dilhari and Nilakshika Silva, but neither batter was able to bat deep enough to engineer a meaningful fightback. West Indies chipped away at the wickets to roll the Lankans over for 98.
Taylor kept her cool - It was a laboured start to the chase, as the Windies' batters tussled with a surface that held up at times. Sri Lanka blew hot and cold with the ball but managed to pick up wickets along the way. With only 99 to chase, it was more a case of keeping calm heads in the middle than anything else. West Indies eventually found that composure through Stafanie Taylor, whose experience came to the fore as she steered her side home.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Hayley Matthews has been given the award for her figures of 3/15 in 4 overs. With the bat, she scored a run-a-ball 17. Hayley says that she had the opportunity to start things off with the ball, and that went well, and she got some early wickets. Mentions that they were in a comfortable position at the end of the first innings and ends by saying that she is really happy with how they performed.
West Indies get over the line - They made this chase of 99 look more difficult than it should have been, but all that matters is that they have the two points in the bag. It is a third consecutive win for West Indies, who remain unbeaten alongside England in Group B. Sri Lanka made West Indies work for it, but their batting unit ultimately let them down earlier in the day. While they put up a fight with the ball, conceding 23 extras and not being tidy enough in the field only made the task harder for the Asian side.
Dropped, and that will do it. West Indies Women win by 5 wickets. Hard length, on middle, Stafanie Taylor looks to loft it but miscues it to mid-wicket. The fielder dives to her left to take the catch, but fails to hold onto it. The batters collect a single.

Swing and a miss! Back of a length, outside off, Imesha Dulani looks to slap it but misses.
Chamari Athapaththu is running at everything here! Full, on leg, Chamari Athapaththu squeezes out an inside edge and it rolls to the right of the keeper. Shemaine Campbelle gets to the ball and fires in a throw at the bowling end. There was a bit of hesitation, but Athapaththu eventually ran for the single. She would have been gone again had the throw hit.
Nice and full, with a hint of inward movement. Chamari Athapaththu taps it to the left of the bowler and calls for a single but is sent back. Chinelle Henry chases the ball and has a shy at the batter's end but misses. A direct hit would have been close.
It will be pace from the other end in the form of Chinelle Henry.

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! What a catch from Hayley Matthews. Matthews drops it short, on off, the ball sticks to the surface, and there is a bit of extra bounce. Vishmi Gunarathne hangs back and tries to turn it away on the leg side. She closes the bat face early and the ball lobs over the bowler's head. Matthews leaps and takes a one-handed catch with her left hand. An early blow for Sri Lanka Women.
A direct hit and Chamari Athapaththu was a goner. A bit short, on off, Chamari taps it beside the strip on the leg side and sets off. The keeper, Shemaine Campbelle chases the ball, and Athapaththu is just jogging to complete the single. Campbelle has a shy at the bowler's end but misses.
Vishmi Gunarathne, and Sri Lanka Women are underway. Much fuller, on off, Vishmi Gunarathne steps out and lofts it down to long on for just a single.
Fired in, just outside off, Vishmi Gunarathne punches it to cover-point.
Hayley Matthews starts with a dot. She serves it full and on middle, Vishmi Gunarathne blocks it back to the bowler.
We are done with the pre-match formalities, and it is time to get underway. Hayley Matthews has gathered her troops in a huddle and is reinforcing the plans one final time before her side takes the field. It will be the left-hand, right-hand combination of Chamari Athapaththu and Vishmi Gunarathne to open the innings for Sri Lanka. Matthews will kick things off with her off-breaks. Gunarathne is on strike. Let's go...
It is time for the national anthems as Chamari Athapaththu and Hayley Matthews lead their respective sides out. It will be the Sri Lankan national anthem first, followed by the anthem of the Windies.
A quick word - Sri Lankan opener, Vishmi Gunarathne, has caught up with Carlos Brathwaite. Gunarathne says that their batters did well in their last game against New Zealand. Adds that they had good practice sessions, and they have their plans ready. Vishmi shares that she admires Virat Kohli. She ends by saying that their head coach keeps on motivating them every time they play.
PITCH REPORT - Julia Price informs that the centre wicket is in use for this contest, with temperatures hovering around 28 degrees Celsius. The straight boundary measures 70 metres, while the square boundaries are 60 metres on either side. Isobel Joyce joins her and notes that there is about 11 millimetres of grass left on the surface. Isobel gets down to inspect the pitch closely and observes a bit of moisture underneath, which she believes is one of the reasons Hayley Matthews opted to bowl first. She further says that spinners have traditionally enjoyed more success at this venue and feels that has as much to do with the ground dimensions as the surface itself.
The skipper of Sri Lanka Women - Chamari Athapaththu says that they were anyway looking to bat first, and she expresses confidence in the batting unit. Athapaththu feels the conditions are good for batting and believes the side is adapting well despite a hectic travel schedule. Chamari says they take confidence from their T20I series win in the Caribbean earlier in the year, but stresses that this is a different match altogether. Informs that there is one change with Imesha Dulani coming into the side.
The captain of West Indies Women - Hayley Matthews says that there is some grass on the wicket, so they want to see what it is doing. She reckons that the partnerships in the series against Sri Lanka were important and they have taken learnings from it. She mentions the one change in their side with Ashmini Munisar coming in for Qiana Joseph.
Sri Lanka Women (Playing XI) - Chamari Athapaththu (C), Vishmi Gunarathne, Imesha Dulani (In for Hasini Perera), Harshitha Samarawickrama, Kavisha Dilhari, Nilakshika Silva, Kaushini Nuthyangana (WK), Sugandika Kumari, Kawya Kavindi, Nimasha Meepage and Mithali Ayodhya.
West Indies Women (Playing XI) - Deandra Dottin, Hayley Matthews (C), Shemaine Campbelle (WK), Stafanie Taylor, Jahzara Claxton, Chinelle Henry, Jannillea Glasgow, Aaliyah Alleyne, Afy Fletcher, Karishma Ramharack and Ashmini Munisar (In for Qiana Joseph).
TOSS - We are all set for the flip of the coin. 'Heads' is the call from Chamari Athapaththu, but the coin lands in favour of Hayley Matthews. West Indies elect to BOWL first.
A blockbuster battle on the cards - This rivalry has a fascinating recent history since Sri Lanka defeated the West Indies in their own backyard earlier this year. The Bristol surface traditionally allows for good stroke play, meaning the team that adapts quicker to the breezy English conditions will hold the upper hand. Will the West Indies make it three wins in a row, or can Sri Lanka pull off another magical result to throw Group B completely wide open? Don't go anywhere, the toss is coming up next.
Sri Lanka hoping for captain to unleash - Sri Lanka have shown incredible heart in this tournament, and their recent historic chase proved they can dismantle the very best. To get past a heavy-hitting West Indies line-up today, they desperately need their superstar captain, Chamari Athapaththu, to find her trademark explosive form at the top of the order. The Islanders must also ensure their spinners lock things down in the middle overs to prevent the dangerous Caribbean batters from getting into a destructive rhythm.
Caribbean power looking for a cleaner finish - West Indies come into this match with a perfect record, but they know they escaped a major scare in their previous outing. Their biggest aim for today will be tightening up their death bowling and field execution after letting a chase get far too close for comfort. Skipper Hayley Matthews will want her team to put up a much more clinical all-round performance, ensuring the top order capitalises on good starts, and the bowling unit finishes off the tail ruthlessly.
Hello from beautiful Bristol - A warm welcome to cricket fans all around the world. We are at the gorgeous County Ground in Bristol for a massive Group B clash in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026. The stakes could not be higher today. West Indies can take a step closer to the semis with a victory, while a Sri Lankan win will throw the group wide open.
... MATCH DAY ...
The battle for the knockouts heats up - The race for a semi-final berth in Group B could take a significant turn when West Indies Women and Sri Lanka Women meet in Bristol. Both sides entered the tournament as dark horses capable of upsetting the established powers, and their early performances have only strengthened that belief. With England and defending champions New Zealand also battling in the same group, every point carries enormous value, making this contest a virtual four-pointer in the race for the knockout stages. The campaign so far - West Indies arrive with momentum on their side after grinding out a couple of hard-fought wins over New Zealand and Scotland. The Caribbean side looked in danger for long periods in their last game before the experience of Stafanie Taylor guided them home with a crucial late contribution. That win showcased a quality that has often defined successful West Indies teams - the ability to find a way even when not at their fluent best. Having secured consecutive victories, Hayley Matthews' side will view this fixture as an opportunity to tighten their grip on a semi-final spot. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, come into Bristol carrying perhaps the biggest confidence boost of any team in the group. Their stunning victory over defending champions New Zealand announced them as genuine contenders rather than mere outsiders. Nilakshika Silva's composed unbeaten Fifty highlighted the growing maturity within the Sri Lankan setup, while the result reinforced the belief that this side is no longer solely dependent on Chamari Athapaththu to produce match-winning performances. How are the conditions looking? Conditions in Bristol are expected to offer a balanced surface. Early assistance for seamers could make the powerplay crucial, particularly against two batting line-ups that prefer to build around their senior stars. As the match progresses, slower bowlers are likely to come into play, bringing the spinners from both sides firmly into the contest. The team that handles the middle overs more effectively could gain a decisive advantage. Form (Last 5 completed T20Is, recent first) - WI-W - WWLWW | SL-W - WLWWW. The verdict? This shapes up as one of the most evenly matched fixtures of the group stage. Sri Lanka arguably carry stronger recent momentum after defeating New Zealand, but so do West Indies, and in addition, they also possess greater tournament experience and a deeper collection of proven match-winners. Expect a closely fought contest, with West Indies holding a slight edge if their senior players deliver under pressure. Who are you backing for the win?
