Commentary

And that wraps up the opening game of this series! Zimbabwe have sent shockwaves down the Pakistan camp with an emphatic victory to secure a 1-0 lead in this three-match series. The action stays in Bulawayo, with the second ODI set to light up your screens on Tuesday, November 26th. The first ball is scheduled for 7.30 am GMT, but don’t forget to join us well ahead of time for all the exciting pre-match buildup. Until then, it’s cheers and goodbye!

The skipper of Zimbabwe, Craig Ervine says he feels ecstatic. Adds that they were looking to bowl first but it did not matter in the end. Reckons that it was a good day overall, with the bat the intent was brilliant and they were always up on the run rate but the only thing that didn't go well was they failed to bat the entire quota of 50 overs. Mentions that the pacers did brilliantly at the top to contain them and Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza followed brilliantly to pick up those wickets in the middle phase.

Sikandar Raza is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his outstanding performance both with the bat and the ball. He starts by saying that somebody had to bat out of their skin and it's nice to have gotten over the line. Mentions that the top 4 batters showed intent which was important and says that the two little partnerships were crucial towards the end. Appreciates Richard Ngarava and mentions how he motivated him to find boundaries and keep the scoreboard ticking. Appreciates the bowlers for the way they fought back and concludes that it is tough on his body to keep performing as an allrounder but the motivation and hunger to do well for the country drives him.

Mohammad Rizwan the skipper of Pakistan is in for a chat. He says it wasn't a good day for them. Adds that the bowlers did their job well but the batters failed whereas for the opponents Sikandar Raza played well and got them to a decent total. Mentions that they failed to handle the pressure well. Closes by saying that the side had a perfect combination in the bowling unit but they just failed with the bat. Credits Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava for this clinical performance and says the experience of these players playing in the PSL has helped them.

It's time for the Presentation Ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Zimbabwe burst out of the gates with an aggressive and positive approach, spearheaded by the dynamic opening duo of Joylord Gumbie and Tadiwanashe Marumani. However, a costly mix-up triggered a dramatic collapse, with wickets tumbling in quick succession. Despite a few batters getting promising starts, none could capitalize, leaving Zimbabwe on shaky ground. Then came a gritty 62-run partnership between Sikandar Raza and Richard Ngarava, injecting much-needed momentum and pushing the team to a competitive total of 205 before being bowled out. For Pakistan, Salman Agha and debutant Faisal Akram were the stars with the ball, claiming three wickets apiece to keep their side on top at the halfway stage in the game.

Pakistan will want to quickly forget this dismal batting display and focus on bouncing back stronger in the next game. Their reckless shot selection at the top set the tone for a collapse, compounded by their inability to counter the spin brilliance of Sikandar Raza and Sean Williams, who dismantled the middle order in no time. Apart from skipper Mohammad Rizwan, who showed some resilience, no batter managed to settle in, leading to wickets falling like a house of cards.

Defending a modest total of 205, Zimbabwe needed a dream start with the ball - and they delivered in style. Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava set the tone from the outset, maintaining tight, probing lines that kept the Pakistani batters on the edge. Muzarabani struck gold early, removing both openers in quick succession, paving the way for the spinners to take control. Both Sikandar Raza and Sean Williams capitalized on the momentum, dismantling Pakistan’s middle order with precision and reducing them to a precarious 58/6, leaving the visitors reeling before the covers came on.

Right then, the official confirmation is here - Play has been called off and Zimbabwe pull off a stunning upset, defeating Pakistan by 80 runs via the DLS method! While rain ultimately cut proceedings short, it only expedited the inevitable, sparing Pakistan further misery. Zimbabwe’s disciplined and spirited bowling effort in just 21 overs delivered a clear statement of intent, leaving the visitors shell-shocked. Taking a 1-0 lead in this three-match series, the hosts have drawn first blood in style with a thoroughly deserved victory.

UPDATE - 2.20 pm GMT - Nothing much happening at the ground, and the rain has now settled into a steady drizzle. While we await further updates from Bulawayo, why not switch tabs and catch the thrilling encounter between West Indies and Bangladesh, which has just started on Day 3? Bangladesh have a tough task ahead, trailing by 404 runs. Sit back, enjoy that match for now, and don’t forget to tune back in here for more updates as soon as we have them!

UPDATE - 1.46 pm GMT - Nothing more to add, folks! The rain is still steady, with the covers firmly in place and no activity around the ground. We're holding out hope for the rain to ease soon, allowing the groundstaff to get to work and set things back in motion. However, with the current conditions, things aren’t looking promising.

UPDATE - 1.05 pm GMT - The rain continues to pour, and the covers are securely in place. With the sky still dark and no floodlights available at the venue, conditions are not looking promising for play to restart anytime soon. It’s now a race against time!

UPDATE - 12.39 pm GMT - It has started to rain and the covers are brought on. It is pouring at Bulawayo and since the 20-over mark is crossed, Zimbabwe wouldn't mind a bit. Pakistan are miles behind in terms of par score as per the DLS at this point and if it continues to rain we will have a result in favour of the hosts. For now, we stay hopeful that this is just a passing shower and the action will resume. Stick around for further updates!

Commentary

We are back with the chase. The umpires are out in the middle followed by the players of Zimbabwe. Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique walk out as the openers for Pakistan. For Zimbabwe, Blessing Muzarabani will bowl the first over.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Richard Ngarava, the highest run-scorer for Zimbabwe is in for a chat. He says he is happy with the way he batted but would have loved to get to the 50. Also mentions that the team comes first. Further adds that the pitch is slightly on the slower side and if they can chip a few early wickets they will have a chance.

Pakistan's bowling started on an uncertain note, but a brilliant piece of fielding by Abdullah Shafique led to the first wicket, which sparked a turnaround in their fortunes. Debutant Faisal Akram was virtually unplayable, claiming three wickets to leave the Zimbabwean batsmen reeling. Salman Agha also impressed, taking three wickets of his own. Aamer Jamal, Mohammad Hasnain, and Haris Rauf chipped in with a wicket each, as Pakistan's bowlers eventually found their rhythm to restrict Zimbabwe. Can Zimbabwe pull off an upset and defend this or will we see yet another dominating performance with the bat from Pakistani batters? We shall have our answers soon.

Zimbabwe's innings got off to a flying start, with the hosts racing to 40 for no loss inside six overs. However, a mix-up between Joylord Gumbie and Tadiwanashe Marumani to Gumbie's dismissal, and the Zimbabwean innings began to unravel. At the 10-over mark, Zimbabwe had stumbled to 62 for 2, and the wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. The hosts struggled to gain momentum in the middle phase, and at one point, it seemed unlikely they would even reach 150, with seven wickets down for 125. However, an unlikely eighth-wicket partnership between Sikandar Raza and Richard Ngarava turned the innings around. The duo added 62 crucial runs, propelling Zimbabwe to a respectable total. Surprisingly, Richard Ngarava top-scored with a valuable 48 runs, helping the hosts post a competitive score.

We are at the mid-way break of the game and Pakistan has bundled out hosts on a mere 205. The decision of Mohammad Rizwan to put Zimbabwe first out to bat has worked in their favor.

40.2W

OUT! TIMBER! Richard Ngarava falls 2 runs short of his maiden half-century and the fun comes to an end! He has done his part though! Zimbabwe end at 205 runs! Mohammad Hasnain takes pace off and bowls it very full, right in the blockhole on leg, Richard Ngarava is deceived by the lack of pace and fails to jam it out. The ball deflects off his pads and hits the stumps.

40.16

SIX! What a shot! Richard Ngarava is putting on a show here! Zimbabwe get past the 200-run mark! Short and on middle, Richard Ngarava pulls and gets it over square leg for a biggie.

End of the Powerplay 2! Pakistan are now allowed up to 5 fielders outside the 30-yard circle.

OUT! TIMBER! An absolute peach of a delivery early on to Haseebullah Khan and he had no answer to it. Drifting in and turning away after pitching on middle and off, Haseebullah Khan plays down the wrong line and the ball sneaks past the outside edge and disturbs the timber. A duck for Haseebullah Khan on his debut.

15.30

Fuller, on middle and off, Haseebullah Khan drives this back to the bowler.

Drinks! Zimbabwe desperately needed early breakthroughs to defend their modest total, and they’ve delivered just that with a stellar bowling performance so far. Despite a few dropped chances that could have dampened their spirits, the bowlers have kept their composure and now have their side firmly in control. Pakistan, on the other hand, will be ruing their missed opportunities and reckless approach, finding themselves in a precarious position once again needing 157 more runs off 208 balls with 6 wickets in hand. All hopes now rest on Mohammad Rizwan to anchor the innings and steer his team out of trouble.

15.2W

OUT! TRAPPED PLUMB IN FRONT! Offie, around middle and off, Salman Agha prods in front to block this but gets beaten to the turn on offer. The ball strikes Agha on his front pad and a gentle appeal is all that the on-field umpire needed to raise his finger. The third umpire took multiple replays to confirm that some part of the foot was grounded behind the line from Sikandar Raza as he bowled this one. Deems it fair and Salman Agha has to walk back!

The ball deflects off his pads and hits the stumps.

At the moment, it's a gloomy scene with a light drizzle and the covers remain firmly in place. Fingers crossed this clears up soon so we can gear up for the toss and get the game underway! On a brighter note, Pakistan have announced their playing XI, featuring three debutants ready to make their mark. Haseebullah Khan, Aamer Jamal and Faisal Akram will be stepping onto the field for their maiden ODI appearance! Stay tuned for more updates!

Zimbabwe, on the other hand, will be led by Craig Ervine and will be looking to make a strong impression against a depleted Pakistani side. Pakistan, led by new skipper Mohammad Rizwan, will be brimming with confidence after their impressive 2-1 victory against the Aussies in their recent tour to Australia. However, they will be without the services of some of their key players, including Babar Azam, Naseem Shah, and Shaheen Afridi, who have been rested for the series.

Hello and welcome to everybody tuning in! The 1st ODI of the three-match series between Zimbabwe and Pakistan is set to get underway, marking the beginning of an exciting contest between the two teams. Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo will host this contest.

... MATCHDAY ...

The stacked international cricketing calendar of 2024 seems to be ending the year with a whole host of series all across the globe and now, Zimbabwe welcome Pakistan for a three-match ODI series followed by a T20I series as well. The first ODI will be played at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo as both sides get into the groove for ODI action, Pakistan more so as they continue their preparation for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in a couple of months time or so. Zimbabwe haven't faced a full member nation in white-ball cricket since they welcomed India a fair few months ago in July but they have been playing competitive cricket in the ICC T20 World Cup, Sub Regional African Qualifiers, Group B and they demolished every opponent in their path. Their squad also includes as many as three uncapped players for this upcoming series but all eyes will be on the likes of skipper Craig Ervine along with the likes of Sikandar Raza and Sean Williams. They have more than a decent pace attack featuring the likes of Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava but it still needs a bit more oomph and the batting too seems a bit undercooked if you take out 2-3 players. Pakistan on the other hand are fresh off their superb ODI series win in Australia against the hosts where they came back from 1-0 down to match the series. Most of the core team that featured in Australia has been retained but there's no Babar Azam or even the pace duo of Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi for that matter. Mohammad Rizwan will continue to lead the side featuring the likes of Saim Ayub, Haris Rauf and Irfan Khan who have done well in recent times but overall, it is a fairly inexperienced side filled with budding talent. They will be confident even after being clean swept in the T20I series against the Aussies as they did win the ODI series and will be expected to gun for another away series win with a probable home ICC Champions Trophy on the horizon. Who are you backing to take the lead in the series?
