Right then, that's all we have from the second ODI, where Afghanistan dominated with both bat and ball, securing the series with a game to spare. They will be eager to inflict further misery on the Proteas and complete a clean sweep. As for South Africa, they will be the first to admit they have been outplayed in both departments by the Asian side across these two games. It's now about pride and a chance to end the series on a high in the final ODI. South Africa face a quick turnaround, with the third and final ODI of the series set for Sunday, 22nd September. The first ball will be bowled at 12 pm GMT. As always, you can join us early for the build-up. See you then. Cheers!

Afghanistan captain, Hashmatullah Shahidi expresses immense pride and joy after his team's series win over South Africa, extending his congratulations to the nation. He acknowledges the significance of the victory and how it has delighted both the team and the supporters back home. Shahidi praises the standout performances, particularly the partnership between Gurbaz and Rahmat Shah, and the impactful finish by Azmatullah. He also highlights the contributions of Rashid Khan, Kharote, and Nabi with the ball. Shahidi reassures fans that Rahmat Shah, who walked off due to cramps, is expected to be fit for the third ODI.

The captain of South Africa, Temba Bavuma says that the foundation was there, but as the wickets started falling, it became really difficult to stay in the game. Feels that they just weren't good enough on the day, and there aren’t a lot of positives to take from this performance. Reckons that they will need to take the learnings, reflect, and remain as positive as they can heading into the final game. Further says that they need to step up in both departments and admits that Afghanistan have been much more clinical than them so far. Tells that the third ODI will be another opportunity for the boys to regroup. States that they weren't able to take ten wickets, and that's something they need to address.

Rashid Khan is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his outstanding performance with the ball. He becomes the first player to take a five-wicket haul on his birthday in an ODI. Rashid expresses his delight after taking a five-wicket haul, his first in a long time. Despite battling a hamstring issue, he is thrilled to have contributed to Afghanistan's victory. Rashid enjoys bowling alongside young talents like Kharote and Ghazanfar, noting their willingness to learn and improve, both in practice and during matches. He emphasizes the importance of seizing the opportunity to win a series against South Africa, crediting the physio for his recovery. Determined to help his team, he pushed through the injury and is pleased with the result.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, after opting to bat first, Afghanistan’s openers gave them a solid platform. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, shaky at the start, grew in confidence and punished any loose deliveries. Rahmat Shah played the ideal supporting role while Gurbaz continued to attack. Gurbaz brought up his 7th ODI century, becoming Afghanistan’s leading centurion in the format, but fell soon after, followed by Rahmat after his fifty. Promoted to number 4, Azmatullah Omarzai kept the momentum going, ensuring the innings stayed on track. With Rashid Khan struggling at the other end due to a hamstring issue, Omarzai needed to bat through and so he did to propel his team to 311.

After a promising 73-run opening stand, the Proteas’ innings began to unravel with the introduction of spin from both ends. Rashid Khan and Nangeyalia Kharote spun a web around the South African batters, who struggled to read the variations, both from the hand and off the pitch. The chase collapsed alarmingly, with South Africa losing all 10 wickets for just 61 runs, turning a solid start into a disastrous finish. They found themselves bowled out for 134 as the Asian side completed a win by a margin of 177 runs, their biggest win in terms of runs in ODIs. Rashid Khan, celebrating his birthday, was the star of the show with a sensational five-wicket haul, while Kharote chipped in with four wickets to cap off a memorable performance.

With 285 being the highest successful chase in ODIs at Sharjah, South Africa knew they were in for a challenging task. A solid start was essential to set the tone for the chase, and Temba Bavuma, alongside Tony de Zorzi, did just that. The duo managed to negotiate the early threat posed by Fazalhaq Farooqi and AM Ghazanfar, giving South Africa a steady platform. However, neither Bavuma nor de Zorzi could convert their starts into substantial scores.

Mission accomplished for Afghanistan! Hashmatullah Shahidi and his men have done it, securing a historic series win over South Africa. Their remarkable rise in white-ball cricket continues, and one can only imagine the jubilation unfolding in Kabul and all over Afghanistan right now. For the Proteas, although they fielded a relatively inexperienced side, this was a prime opportunity for their seasoned campaigners to step up, something they couldn’t manage in both games. As a result, South Africa found themselves on the losing side in both encounters and will need to regroup for the final game with only pride at stake.

Commentary

Welcome back for South Africa's reply. The two umpires make their way out to the middle followed by the two South African openers. They are now joined by Hashmatullah Shahidi and his men. Temba Bavuma and Tony de Zorzi will open the innings for South Africa. Fazalhaq Farooqi will kickstart the proceedings with the new ball. Two slips in place. Here we go!

... THE RUN CHASE ...

With South Africa in a must-win situation to keep the series alive, it promises to be an intense run chase. Stay tuned as the action resumes with South Africa looking to chase down 312 to stay in the series!

Rahmanullah Gurbaz is up for a chat. He says that the wicket was not easy to bat but they managed it really well and he thinks that it's a good total for them. Further adds that it is a great opportunity for them to play against the Proteas and they are a very strong team. He reckons that their bowling unit also has to give their best to close the game on their side.

On the bowling front, South Africa struggled to contain the Afghan batters, with their bowlers failing to maintain pressure throughout the innings. Despite a decent fielding effort, they found it difficult to restrict runs. Now, they face the daunting task of chasing a formidable target on a surface that seems conducive to Afghanistan’s spin-heavy attack.

Rahmat Shah and Azmatullah Omarzai also played significant roles in building the innings. Rahmat anchored in the middle, scoring a patient fifty, while Azmatullah’s explosive knock of 86 from just 50 balls powered Afghanistan to an imposing total. His aggressive stroke play, particularly towards the end of the innings, provided the crucial final push for Afghanistan.

What a brilliant display of batting from Afghanistan! The batters have put up a show and walk out with their heads held high, setting a challenging total of 311/4 in their 50 overs in this crucial second ODI. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the star of the innings, smashing his 7th ODI century with a splendid knock of 105 off 110 balls, including 10 boundaries and 3 towering sixes. He provided a strong start alongside his opening partner Riaz, who fell early after making a start.

Their chase unravelled, and they fell well behind in the game. Nangeyalia Kharote to continue after the break.

While South Africa have managed to restrict the boundaries in the last few overs, the two Afghan batters have done well to rotate the strike, keeping the scoreboard ticking with singles and twos. With nine wickets still in hand and a solid platform laid, Afghanistan will certainly aim for a total beyond 300. Drinks break! Afghanistan have made a solid start after choosing to bat first. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, though a bit tentative in the beginning, has grown in confidence as his innings has progressed. His partner, Riaz Hassan, has played a more subdued role, providing steady support while rotating the strike. South Africa, on the other hand, haven’t been as disciplined with their bowling. They’ve struggled to find the right lengths, often bowling both sides of the wicket, allowing Afghanistan to build momentum. The Proteas will need to tighten things up after the break if they want to break this partnership and regain control of the game.

PITCH REPORT - Niall O'Brien is near the deck, and he starts by informing that there's a slight breeze blowing across the ground. Further says it's a brand-new pitch, and it's absolutely rock hard and flat. Vernon Philander joins him and notes that there's even less grass on this surface compared to the previous game with a couple of bare patches visible. Vernon reckons that the lack of grass means there will be less pace on offer and the bowlers will have to consistently bring the stumps into play. Niall ends by saying that while the surface is pretty flat, scoring in the Powerplay might be tricky with the new ball.

The captain of South Africa, Temba Bavuma says that they would have batted first as well as the wicket looks to be on the drier side. Feels that they will need to bring spin early on and restrict the scoring. States that they have had a few conversations on how to counter AM Ghazanfar. Informs that he comes into the side as does Nqabayomzi Peter who will be making his debut.

Afghanistan's skipper, Hashmatullah Shahidi, opts to bat first, explaining that the wicket looks favourable, and during the day, the ball should come nicely onto the bat. He credits his team's performance in the first game, praising their skills and how well they utilized the pitch to bowl effectively. Shahidi expresses confidence in his team’s readiness for the second match, hoping to seal the series with a win in this game. Informs that Ikram Alikhil comes in for Gulbadin Naib.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Tony de Zorzi, Temba Bavuma (C) (In for Jason Smith), Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne (WK), Wiaan Mulder, Bjorn Fortuin, Nandre Burger, Nqabayomzi Peter (On debut) (In for Andile Phehlukwayo), Lungi Ngidi.

Afghanistan (Playing XI) - Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Riaz Hassan, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi (C), Mohammad Nabi, Ikram Alikhil (WK) (In for Gulbadin Naib), Azmatullah Omarzai, Rashid Khan, AM Ghazanfar, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Nangeyalia Kharote.

TOSS - Afghanistan have won the flip of the coin and have elected to BAT first.

With Afghanistan now leading 1-0 in the series, this match is a must-win for South Africa if they hope to stay alive and force a decider in the third ODI. Afghanistan, on the other hand, will be keen to seal the series and continue their dominant run. Both teams are ready to put on a thrilling contest, and we can expect another exciting clash between these two sides. Stay with us as we bring you the toss and other match updates from Sharjah!

In response, Afghanistan chased down the target comfortably in 26 overs, thanks to a composed team effort. Gulbadin Naib played a key knock, scoring crucial 34 runs, which anchored the chase and ensured Afghanistan’s commanding win. Although South Africa's Bjorn Fortuin picked up 2 wickets, it wasn’t enough to derail Afghanistan’s smooth run chase.

The opening game saw Afghanistan secure a comprehensive 6-wicket victory, as they outplayed South Africa in every department. South Africa struggled with the bat, managing to post just 106 runs on the board. While Wiaan Mulder fought hard and top-scored with a gritty 52-run knock, the rest of the lineup crumbled under Afghanistan's relentless bowling attack. Fazalhaq Farooqi was the standout performer with the ball, tearing through South Africa's batting order with an impressive 4-wicket haul. His precision and control made it difficult for South Africa to gain any momentum, leaving them with a sub-par total to defend.

Hello and a warm welcome to all our readers around the world! We are here at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, where Afghanistan will take on South Africa in the second ODI of this three-match series. After a dominant performance in the first match, Afghanistan hold a crucial 1-0 lead, and the pressure is now firmly on South Africa to level the series.

... MATCH DAY ...

After making history in the first ODI, Afghanistan are set to lock horns with South Africa once again in the second match of the 3-game series, aiming to seal the series and further cement their place among the elite teams in international cricket. The second match will unfold at the iconic Sharjah Cricket Stadium, promising yet another gripping contest. South Africa, who entered the series as clear favourites, stumbled in the first game with a forgettable batting display. The absence of captain Temba Bavuma, due to illness, left the Proteas unbalanced, and it showed in their performance. Their batting lineup was dismantled by Afghanistan’s impressive bowling attack, led by Fazalhaq Farooqi and AM Ghazanfar, leaving the Proteas reeling at 36/7 by the end of the first powerplay. Wiaan Mulder fought back with a gritty 52, helping South Africa post a modest total of 106 before being bowled out. With the ball, South Africa started strong, making early breakthroughs, but Afghanistan's seasoned duo, Azmatullah Omarzai and Gulbadin Naib steadied the ship, guiding their team to a historic chase and securing Afghanistan's first-ever ODI win against the Proteas. For the second battle, the Proteas will quickly have to adapt to the subcontinental conditions and come up with a strong response to Afghanistan’s formidable bowling attack, which has been a force in recent years. On the other hand, Afghanistan will be eager to put in another dominant display and seal the series, a potential landmark achievement for this rising team. With this being a must-win game for South Africa, expect them to come out stronger, making this contest even more anticipated. Who will you back to win this one? We’re about to find out soon!
