Commentary

Right then, Australia are up and running in the Super 8s. They have given their NRR an early boost, taking them above India at the top of the standings in Group 1. Next up on Friday, June 21, the defending champions, England, will be in action as they take on South Africa at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia. The game will start at 8 pm IST (2.30 pm GMT), but our build-up will begin much sooner. See you then. Cheers!

Mitchell Marsh, the Australian skipper says that it was a solid bowling performance and the boys played really well. Adds that they have a settled playing XI and the team has the capacity to go all the way. Ends by sharing that they have an amazing group and all are raring to go.

The captain of Bangladesh, Najmul Hossain Shanto says that the wicket was on the slower side but was a good one to bat on. Feels that they should have tried to get at least 170. Adds that they should have tried to take more risks. Shares that he is enjoying the captaincy role and hopes to contribute more with the bat. Tells that the top order getting runs was important in this game and hopes that bowlers can continue the good work in the next game against India.

Pat Cummins is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his hat-trick. He finished with figures of 3 for 29 from his 4 overs. He says that he forgot about the hat-trick but Marcus Stoinis came in and reminded him. Adds that getting the set batter out worked in their favour. Shares that the Hat-trick club is good to be a part of and he is really happy to start the Super 8s with a win with a healthy net run rate.

Earlier in the game, after electing to bowl first, Mitchell Starc gave Australia an early breakthrough. Litton Das had a real struggle out in the middle, taking 10 balls to open the account. Najmul Hossain Shanto started positively and a good 5th and 6th over meant that Bangladesh had a decent Powerplay. Das couldn't really get out of the rut and the experiment to promote Rishad Hossain did not quite work out for the Asian side. Just as Bangladesh wanted to put their foot on the gas, Shanto's departure pegged them back. Towhid Hridoy fought a lone battle to keep Bangladesh afloat, but Pat Cummins' hat-trick thwarted their hopes for a late flourish. A late contribution from Taskin Ahmed helped Bangladesh get to 140. Pat Cummins became the 7th bowler, but only the 2nd Australian bowler after Brett Lee, to pick up a hat-trick in Men's T20 World Cups. Adam Zampa chipped in with a couple of wickets while Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis took one wicket each.

With the bat, Bangladesh could never really hit top gear, resulting in a below-par total. This meant they were on the hunt for early inroads. While Mahedi Hasan bowled a decent opening spell, the pacers struggled with their lines and lengths during the Powerplay. Moreover, David Warner made them pay for dropping him when he was on 5. The rain break came at a crucial time for Bangladesh, as they were under pressure. Upon resumption, Rishad Hossain struck in successive overs, providing his side with a much-needed opening. However, they could not build pressure on the opposition as they failed to squeeze in quiet overs and eventually succumbed to a loss.

Having limited Bangladesh down to 140, it was a job well done for Australia with the ball. While chasing, David Warner got off the blocks quickly and Travis Head followed suit soon after. A strong Powerplay for Australia ensured they had the required rate under control. Despite losing Head and Marsh in quick succession, Warner kept going and Maxwell played his part too to take the wind out of Bangladesh's sails. When the rain arrived again, Australia were well ahead of the DLS par score and no further play was possible, resulting in them securing the two points.

That's all, folks! Rain has had the final say! Not the kind of finish any of us wanted to the game but the latest bout of rain was too strong, and the players could not get back on the field. AUSTRALIA WIN BY 28 RUNS (DLS METHOD). Deservingly so, Australia were always in control of the chase and have gotten their Super 8 campaign off to a winning start.

UPDATE - 9.44 am IST (4.14 am GMT) - We have started to lose overs now. More covers are brought in as the rain gets heavier at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. The cut-off time for the play to resume is 10.15 am IST (4.45 am GMT).

UPDATE - 9.29 am IST (3.59 am GMT) - Oh No! The rain has returned. It's been that kind of day. The covers are back and off go the players. Australia are in a commanding position and are 28 runs ahead of the DLS par score. It's raining heavily now and we might be in for a longer delay.

Commentary

Welcome back. The umpires return to the park along with the Australian openers, Travis Head and David Warner stride out to the middle. Bangladesh are in a huddle near the boundary before they spread onto the field. It will be the off-spin of Mahedi Hasan with the ball in hand for Bangladesh. Here we go!

…THE RUN CHASE…

UPDATE - 7.57 am IST (2.27 am GMT) - Good news folks! The rain has eased away and the covers are off. We should resume in a short while from now.

Right then, Australia needs 141 for the victory and start their Super 8s campaign on a winning note. How soon can they do it or will Bangladesh spring in a surprise? We shall find out. Join us in a bit for the second essay. Oh No! It has started to drizzle in Antigua and the covers are on. Let's hope this is a passing shower and we can resume quickly. Stay tuned for all the updates!

Adam Zampa is in for a chat. He says that having played here last week, they knew what to expect. Adds that the wicket is slightly different than last time. Shares that the ball is coming out of his hand nicely and he has the full backing from the captain. Says that he is happy to have restricted Bangladesh to 140 and feels that this is definitely a gettable total.

For Australia, Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa were the stand-out bowlers with five wickets among them. Starc, Stoinis, and Maxwell chipped in with one apiece. Australia will be the happier side going into the break. They bowled tight lines and kept chipping away with wickets at crucial stages of the game and did not allow Bangladesh to score easy runs. The bowlers have done their job and the onus will now be on their batting unit to chase this down.

An outstanding bowling display from Australia has restricted Bangladesh to 140 for 8 in their 20 overs. Having sent into bat first, Bangladesh lost Tanzid Hasan in the first over but their skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and Litton Das added 58 for the second wicket. Das looked scratchy while Shanto made a sublime 41. Bangladesh kept losing wickets at regular intervals and failed to build partnerships in the middle. Only Towhid Hridoy with 40 off 28 hung around in the middle and stuck some lusty blows to take his side to the 140-run mark.

OUT! TAKEN! There it is, HAT-TRICK for Pat Cummins! 7th man to pick up a hat-trick in T20 World Cups and the 2nd Australian to do so after Brett Lee. Cummins bends his back and digs in a cross-seam delivery, outside off, Mahmudullah swivels in his crease and tries to fetch the pull from outside off. He goes through his shot early as the ball comes on slower than he anticipated. Gets it off the bottom edge and it goes back onto to crash into the stumps.

17.41

Sliding on the pads and the length stays full, Towhid Hridoy flicks it off his pads through mid-wicket for one more run.

17.31

At pace, full and on off, Mahmudullah pushes it in front of mid off and calls Towhid Hridoy through for a quick single. 4 runs off the first three balls. Can Towhid Hridoy make this a big over in the next 3 balls?

17.21

Much fuller and takes the pace off again, on off, Towhid Hridoy knocks it down to long on and gets to the other end.

17.12

UPDATE - 9.02 am IST (3.32 am GMT) - Great news! The rain has subsided and all covers have been removed. The ground staff have done a good job of getting the field ready for play and we should be resuming shortly.

UPDATE - 8.47 am IST (3.17 am GMT) - Not again! The rain has returned, as have the ground staff with the covers. The entire square has been covered, which wasn't the case earlier when the play was stopped, so the rain seems to be heavier this time around. Stick around for more news.

UPDATE - 8.38 am IST (3.08 am GMT) - Oh, no! The heavens have opened up and the umpires have asked the ground staff to bring the covers on. In case you were wondering, the DLS par score at this stage for Australia is 35 and they are well ahead. However, the rain has subsided and the strip has been uncovered. The ground staff are busy mopping up the outfield and we should be back underway soon.

Welcome back. The umpires return to the park along with the Australian openers, Travis Head and David Warner stride out to the middle.

Thankfully, we are starting on time, and we are moments away from the first ball in this clash, but before that, the match officials and the two sets of players will line up for the national anthems. It will be Bangladesh's national anthem first followed by the national anthem of Australia.

Najmul Hossain Shanto, the Bangladesh skipper says that he would have bowled first as well but is happy to bat. Shares that Mahedi Hasan comes in for Jaker Ali. Mentions that as a batting group, they need to do something special and step up.

The captain of Australia, Mitchell Marsh says that they will bowl first. Adds that this is a decent wicket and reckons that it won't change much throughout the 40 overs. Says that having played 1 game here at this venue, it is nice to get used to the conditions and hopes that they can have a good night. Informs that they have made two changes with Pat Cummins coming in for Ashton Agar and Josh Hazlewood replacing Nathan Ellis.

UPDATE - 5.38 am IST (12.08 am GMT) - Good news! It has stopped raining and the covers are coming off. Considering the intensity of the rain that fell and that the players are already out there going through their warm-up drills, we should not be far away from the flip of the coin. Stay tuned.

UPDATE - 5.33 am IST (12.03 am GMT) - Uh, oh! It has started to rain out of nowhere and is concerning enough for the ground staff to cover the entire square. As a result, the toss has been delayed for now. There is a strong breeze blowing across, and let's hope it blows the rain away. Stick around for further updates.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, were in a group of death but managed to qualify with three wins from four outings. They won convincingly against the Netherlands but made it tough for themselves against Nepal and Sri Lanka. Their batters haven’t fired yet but the bowling has looked threatening. The likes of Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, and Rishad Hossain have been in fine form and can challenge any side on their given day. Bangladesh will look to be competitive and challenge Australia in all facets of the game. Can Bangladesh cause an upset or will Australia be too strong for them? Let’s find out. Toss and team news in a bit. Stay tuned!

Hello and a warm welcome to coverage of Match 4 in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup, 2024. Australia are taking on Bangladesh at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua. Australia played some brilliant cricket through the group stage and were undefeated in their four games. Marcus Stoinis has been in terrific form so far as the all-rounder has smashed over 150 runs in three outings and has stuck at over 190. With the ball, he has chipped in with key wickets. The likes of David Warner, Travis Head, and Tim David have been in good form but the Aussies will hope that Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell to fire. Adam Zampa has been the standout with the ball and the pace bowlers have supported him well. Australia looks like a well-oiled unit and will be favorite going into this contest but Bangladesh cannot be taken lightly.

…MATCHDAY…

The highly anticipated Super 8 stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup has arrived, and the teams are engaged in an intense battle for supremacy. The tournament has been a gripping spectacle thus far, with matches that have kept spectators on the edge of their seats, unfolding as nail-biting thrillers. The fourth match of the thrilling Super 8s stage sees the formidable Australian side gearing up to take on Bangladesh at the iconic Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua. The Aussies have been in blistering form across formats lately, and they dominated the group stage, emerging unbeaten and maintaining a clean sheet with four consecutive victories under their belt. Australia's batting unit has been in scintillating form, and the presence of the explosive Travis Head at the top of the order has provided them with blistering starts right from the outset. Head's ability to take the game by the scruff of its neck in the powerplay overs has made him a deadly proposition for any bowling attack. David Warner’s form also holds a key to their success. They boast a power-packed batting lineup capable of making up for any shortcomings. Their skipper Mitchell Marsh leads from the front and is a formidable batter himself. Then there's the muscular Marcus Stoinis, who has been an absolute nightmare for bowlers, peppering them with disdain and clearing the ropes at will. While their middle order hasn't quite fired on all cylinders yet, Australia has players like the mercurial Glenn Maxwell who is tailor-made for the big stage. Maxwell is not just a batting maverick but also a serious component with the ball, capable of complementing the other spin wizards like Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar. Speaking of Zampa, he has been incredibly miserly, barely giving anything away to the opposition batters with his frugal spells. And as always, the Australian pace attack sends shivers down the spine of the opposition batters, and nothing less would be anticipated from Mitchell Starc and others. Bangladesh secured their Super 8s berth on the back of a thrilling, low-scoring victory against Nepal, where they successfully defended a modest total. Their runs have primarily come from Towhid Hridoy's bat, and they'll need others to step up. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto's underwhelming form with the bat has been a concern, and the side will be hoping for a strong comeback from their skipper as they've struggled for solid starts up front. The team will also be counting on Litton Das to rediscover his touch with the bat. The hard-hitting batter has struggled to make an impact so far, with just one score above single digits in the tournament. The experienced duo of Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah provide valuable all-round skills to Bangladesh's middle order, capable of bailing them out in crunch situations. While the batting has underwhelmed, Tanzid Hasan Sakib has emerged as a lethal pace spearhead, consistently delivering with the ball. The spin department holds the key, with the impressive Rishad Hossain complementing the wily Shakib. While this clash will take place at Antigua, this spin duo could prove pivotal against the mighty Australians who have struggled a bit against the spin. While the venue recently witnessed a batting blitz from the West Indies and the score breaching beyond 200, this clash shapes up as an enthralling contest between Australia's formidable batting might and Bangladesh's bowling arsenal. With bat and ball expected to have an even say, this clash promises a thrilling nail-biter. Can Bangladesh's bowlers rise to the challenge, or will the rampant ‘Straaya’ continue their merry run and tighten their grip on the tournament? Only time will tell.
