Commentary

Right then, a massive four-point swing between Lucknow and Chennai as they played each other in back-to-back games and Lucknow went on to win both games, firming their place back in the top four and nudging Chennai down into fifth place. There's still a lot to play for and next up is a vital clash between Delhi and Gujarat at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. That game will begin on Wednesday, 24 April at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) but you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up. Till then, take care and goodbye!

Marcus Stoinis is the Player of the Match for his stunning match-winning ton. Stoinis says that in these competitions, there are plenty of better opening batters and though it is nice to open the innings, he is settled in the middle order. Adds that it was not just hit and there were certain bowlers they wanted to target in order to keep the run rate in check. Mentions that it might have looked easy on the outside but on the inside, there were some calculations going on. Adds that the game is certainly changing and the way the openers are taking on the Powerplay. On his contract situation with Cricket Australia, he says that he has a great rapport with the coach and he was always aware of not getting a contract and reckons if his spot goes to someone young and talented, he is more than happy with it.

KL Rahul, the skipper of Lucknow says that this is a special win and for the most part of the batting innings they felt they were behind in the game but credit to the way they pulled out this game. Appreciates Marcus Stoinis and says it was not just power-hitting but also smart batting. Mentions that over the past couple of games, they decided they needed one power hitter in the top 3 to go hard and it was tactical to send Marcus at number 3. Says that T20 has changed over the years and 170-180 doesn't feel enough and gets chased in 18 odd overs and with the impact player rule things become tough and they have to go harder in the Powerplay. Concludes that there is no set plan for Nicholas Pooran and everybody apart from the openers is always ready to walk in and step up according to the situation.

The Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, KL Rahul won the toss and had no hesitation in batting second given the amount of dew that comes into play on this ground. It was a well-fought first 10 overs when Chennai were batting but once Shivam Dube came on to bat, things changed. Ruturaj Gaikwad also went into overdrive and smashed a century as Dube's onslaught made sure that the hosts got over the 200-run mark which was certainly 10-15 runs too many. With the ball, Matt Henry was brilliant and the spin duo of Ravi Bishnoi and Krunal Pandya were fairly decent as well but it was the likes of Mohsin Khan, Marcus Stoinis and Yash Thakur who conceded a lot of runs in the death overs. Interestingly, Lucknow dropped multiple catches and were sloppy in the field that helped Chennai a lot but it was a couple of sloppy misfields late on in Lucknow's chase from Chennai that really made the difference along with Stoinis' stellar knock.

Deepak Hooda, one of the architects of the run chase is now up for a chat. Hooda says that his thoughts were pretty clear and wanted to hit the ball and find the gaps. Adds that, to be honest, he didn't have any other option at the death but applauds the bowling of the opposition. On Marcus Stoinis, he says that Stoinis is like a warrior and he even takes inspiration from him. Adds that when Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran were batting, it gave them the hope to go on and get the win. Mentions that these two points make a huge difference, especially given that the business end of the tournament is near and Chennai are a class side.

Ruturaj Gaikwad the skipper of Chennai is down for a chat. He says it is a tough pill to swallow but Lucknow and Marcus Stoinis played brilliantly despite them having control over the game till the 13th over. Adds that the dew took the spinner out of the game and it's just part of the game and they have a long way to go. Talks about Ravindra Jadeja playing at number 4 and says that after powerplay whenever a wicket falls he will be the one to walk out to bat. He further talks about the total and says it was around par with the dew and knew it would go down to the last over but credits Lucknow for getting through.

Chennai will be gutted with that loss as they seemed to have things under control but with the amount of dew in play, the opposition was always in the game. The pace attack didn't really fire apart from Matheesha Pathirana who was once again pretty good but even in his final over, he couldn't hit the mark. The spinners remained wicketless and weren't used much but the experienced likes of Shardul Thakur and Mustafizur Rahman really let their side down in the death overs. A couple of sloppy efforts in the field didn't help either and they were well beaten in the end which was surprising.

Needing 211 for the win against Chennai in their own backyard was always going to be difficult but it became all that more difficult when Quinton de Kock fell in the very first over for a duck and then the skipper, KL Rahul too got out inside the first 5 overs. Then came the counter-punch from Marcus Stoinis but Lucknow needed a lot more and a sluggish knock at the other end from Devdutt Padikkal only bogged them down. Once he got out, the pairing of Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran were able to inject momentum into the chase and took the game deep. Pooran did get out but the Aussie kept on finding the fence and brought up a magnificent hundred before a couple of crucial blows from Deepak Hooda handed Lucknow the advantage and Stoinis was able to end things in a hurry in the final over.

FORTRESS CHEPAUK HAS BEEN BREACHED! Wow, what a game and what an inning from Marcus Stoinis and that has to be one of the greatest chases we have seen in the history of the tournament. Lucknow beat Chennai in back-to-back games and hand Chennai their first home defeat of the season in epic fashion. This is also the highest successful chase at this venue and it was possible thanks to just one man - 'the Hulk.'

19.34

FOUR! As easy as it can get! Marcus Stoinis has pulled out a heist and made it two in a row for Lucknow against Chennai this season. Mustafizur Rahman drops the length and bowls it really short over middle and leg, Marcus Stoinis gets across and has all the time in the world to pull it over short fine leg for four runs to seal the victory with 6 wickets in hand.

19.35nb

NO BALL AND FOUR! Marcus Stoinis is in a hurry and that's just poor bowling. Oh dear, to add to the misery, Mustafizur Rahman has overstepped! Bowls a full toss outside off, Marcus Stoinis gets closer to the line and looks for the slash but gets an outside edge past short third for four runs. A free hit will now follow!

19.24

FOUR! Make that 10 in two! Mustafizur Rahman bowls full and in the slot outside off, Marcus Stoinis takes a step across again and drills it straight over the bowler's head for four more.

19.16

SIX! What a start to the over! Mustafizur Rahman bowls this fuller and outside off, Marcus Stoinis takes a step across and launches this over long on for a maximum.

17 needed off the final over and this match is heading towards a tight finish. Mustafizur Rahman has been handed the ball. Can he keep his cool and defend 16 runs? Or will Marcus Stoinis take Lucknow to a memorable win? Let's find out.

18.50

Takes pace off and digs this short outside off, Deepak Hooda looks for the big pull but misses out.

18.44

FOUR! That's salt to the wound! Bowls this nice and full into middle and leg, Deepak Hooda drills it straight down the ground past long on for four more runs.

18.34

FOUR! That's sloppy from Deepak Chahar and this could cost Chennai a lot more than just a four. Matheesha Pathirana bowls this nicely on a fuller length well outside off, Deepak Hooda looks to slice it over cover but gets a thick outside edge past the keeper. Deepak Chahar at third man gets to the ball but doesn't bend down enough letting the ball go through for four runs.

18.21

That's much better for Matheesha Pathirana! Goes full and just outside off, Marcus Stoinis digs it to cover for a single.

18.14

FOUR! Muscled it! Pitched on a length, around that off stump line, Marcus Stoinis makes room and drills it through covers for a boundary on the first ball.

SIX! Just over the fielder! Drops the length short and angles it into the body, Deepak Chahar stays deep in the crease and pulls it nicely over deep square leg. Deepak Chahar in the deep does jump up and manages to get both hands to the ball but it just goes through over the fence for a maximum.

17.51

Takes pace off and bowls a low full toss outside off, Marcus Stoinis is caught by surprise but manages to whip it to long off for a single.

17.42

HUNDRED for Marcus Stoinis! His first in the Indian T20 Leafgues and there was no better time for him to do it! Fuller delivery, outside off, Marcus Stoinis drives it to deep cover and gets a couple of runs.

17.30

Comes from around the wicket and bowls it wider on off and on a fuller length, Marcus Stoinis leaves it alone. The umpire calls it a fair delivery and Marcus Stoinis sends it upstairs for a wide check. The replays show that Stoinis was standing outside the off stump line and the onfield call stays as a fair delivery.

17.26

SIX! Sheer power on that from Marcus Stoinis! Mustafizur Rahman bowls it a tad shorter and outside off, Marcus Stoinis stands tall and picks the length perfectly launching this one over deep mid-wicket for a biggie!

17.10

Angles this across on a good length, outside off, Marcus Stoinis looks to heave it over leg but fails to make any connection.

LEG BYES! A loud appeal for LBW and the umpire turns it down. Chennai do send it upstairs for a review. Matheesha Pathirana nails the yorker angling into middle and leg, Marcus Stoinis fails to jam it out and gets crushed into the back boot as the batters cross. The replays roll on and UltraEdge confirms that there was no bat involved. Ball Tracking shows that the pitch was outside leg stump and the onfield call of NOT OUT stays.

A pretty late review from Ruturaj Gaikwad for and LBW decision that was given Not Out on field. The third umpire is called in and he checks UltraEdge first. No spike as the ball passes the bat and Ball Tracking that the ball is pitching outside the leg stump. NOT OUT comes up on the big screen.

16.54

FOUR! Nicely done! Pathirana takes pace off and hits the deck outside off on a shorter length, Marcus Stoinis waits on and cuts it past the backward point fielder for a boundary.

Commentary

We are back with the chase! The two umpires make their way into the middle and the players of Chennai are seen in a tight-knit huddle before spreading out to take the field. It will be Quinton de Kock alongside the Lucknow skipper, KL Rahul who will open the innings with the bat. Shardul Thakur comes in as an impact substitute for Chennai replacing Ajinkya Rahane. Deepak Chahar is given the new ball and is raring to go. Let's play..

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Lucknow got off to an ideal start with Matt Henry striking early in the very first over of the game, providing them with a crucial breakthrough. However, their fielding let them down, costing them dearly during the powerplay as Chennai mounted a counterattack. Just as Chennai seemed to be gaining momentum, Yash Thakur's introduction into the attack proved pivotal as he redeemed himself for the earlier dropped catch by dismissing Daryl Mitchell and halting Chennai's surge. Despite a resilient third-wicket partnership, Mohsin Khan managed to break through, further denting Chennai's progress. However, things fell apart for the visitors and Lucknow's bowlers struggled to maintain their line and length, compounded by some lapses in the field, which allowed Chennai to capitalize firmly setting a target of 211 runs. With dew potentially playing a factor in the second innings, Lucknow will need to bring their A-game and deliver an exceptional performance to have any chance of successfully chasing down this target. Will they be able to do so and breach the fortress? We shall soon find out as the chase comes to you in a bit.

Shivam Dube is down for a quick chat. He says that he definitely enjoyed his knock and the support from the crowd is amazing here and that pushes him a bit more. Adds that Ruturaj Gaikwad was there for a long time and after the break, he took matters into his own hands which the bowler might not have expected. Reckons that they are 10-15 runs above par and they should be able to defend it and ends by saying that Gaikwad is a class apart.

Wow! This batting display from both Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube was nothing short of extraordinary, as they unleashed a barrage of counterattacking strokes to propel their side to a formidable total of 210 runs which seemed like a far-fetched target at one stage. After being put into bat first, Chennai faced early trouble as Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed in the very first over. Daryl Mitchell, benefiting from a dropped catch, joined Ruturaj Gaikwad to counterattack, steadying the ship with a flurry of powerful strokes. However, Mitchell's innings was short-lived as he departed in the final over of the powerplay, leaving Chennai at 49/2 after six overs. Ravindra Jadeja was yet again promoted up the order to number 4 and contributed to a vital 52-run partnership with Gaikwad before falling victim to a short delivery. However, the real onslaught came from Shivam Dube and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who unleashed a barrage of boundaries and sixes to decimate the Lucknow bowlers. Their blistering 104-run partnership for the fourth wicket turned the tide firmly in Chennai's favour. Gaikwad, in particular, showcased his class and determination, eventually reaching a well-deserved century and remaining unbeaten on 108 runs.

FOUR! Not quite the MS Dhoni flourish but he does get a crucial boundary and the home crowd is more than pleased with that. Marcus Stoinis goes for the wide yorker again and Dhoni just stays back and shuffles across before whipping it away over the mid-wicket region for four runs. 15 off the final over and Chennai finish with 210/4 on the board!

19.51

Just the single and that means MS Dhoni will face the final delivery. Full and wide outside off, Ruturaj Gaikwad tries to be cheeky by shuffling across and attempting the lap shot but miscues it badly to square leg for a run.

The crowd erupts as MS Dhoni walks out to bat next for Chennai.

19.4W

OUT! RUN OUT! Lucknow nearly messed that one up as well. Marcus Stoinis goes full and wide now, Shivam Dube stays back in the crease and looks to power it over covers but doesn't get under it and hits it straight to Quinton de Kock before setting off for the run. De Kock is a bit slow to throw it back to Stoinis, who, himself is slow to take off the bails but the replays show that Dube is short of his crease. End of a fiery knock from Dube.

19.32

Short and outside off, really dug in this time and Shivam Dube slaps it over backward point for a couple of runs.

19.22

In the air but will land safely! Banged in quite short and over off stump, Shivam Dube is early into the pull shot and ends up slicing it high over the bowler's head before scampering back for two runs.

19.16

SIX! The Lucknow bowlers simply aren't learning from their mistakes and Shivam Dube will put those away every day. Back of a length and around off, easy pace for Dube who just hangs back and swings across the line, getting it over deep square leg for another biggie. The 200 comes up for Chennai as well.

CAUGHT! Oh, no! Quinton de Kock has SPILLED IT! Full and wide again from Mohsin Khan and this time Shivam Dube looks to power it over extra cover but doesn't quite get the height. De Kock leaps to his left and gets his hands in a poor position and the ball just pops out after a moment. A single is taken and Lukcnow's miserable night in the field continues.

18.46

SIX! Shivam Dube is playing a blinder here and brings up his third FIFTY of the season! Slower one, right in the slot outside off and Dube flat-bats it right back over the bowler's head for a maximum. 16 already off this over.

18.34

FOUR! Thumped! Full and wide, in the slot though and Shivam Dube just throws his hands at it slashing it away in front of deep cover for a boundary.

18.20

Fuller length, wide of the off stump, Shivam Dube hangs deep in the crease and hits it towards extra cover.

18.16

SIX! Easy pace and that was just begging to be hit. Halfway down the track and around off, sitting up nicely, Shivam Dube stands tall and slobbers it a long way over wide long on for a biggie.

Full and wide, pushed well across from around the stumps, Ruturaj Gaikwad shuffles and looks to heave across the line but hits it on the bounce back to the bowler. 15 off that over.

17.54

FOUR! A valiant effort in the deep from Ravi Bishnoi but in vain. Banged in short, Ruturaj Gaikwad gets hurried on and miscues the pull in front of deep mid-wicket. Bishnoi is a bit inside the ropes and has to back-pedal and he cannot reach it. The ball just bounces inside the ropes and goes for a four.

17.44

FOUR! HUNDRED FOR GAIKWAD! His second one in the Indian T20 League! Pitched-up delivery wide of off stump, Ruturaj Gaikwad just hangs back and thumps it over extra cover for a boundary. A top knock and he takes off the helmet, soaking in the applause from the crowd.

17.36

SIX! Ruturaj Gaikwad moves to 99 with that shot. Goes full again and looks to angle it in at the toes but serves a half volley on off stump, Gaikwad gets under it and powers it over long on for a biggie.

17.21

Full and wide again, turns out to be a low full toss, Shivam Dube slashes it away off the outside edge to short third and they pick up a quick single.

17.10

Gets it absolutely perfect this time and gets the wide yorker just inside the tramline. Shivam Dube cannot get any bat on it.

17.11wd

WIDE! Looks for wide yorker and gets the length spot on but the line seems to be just too wide for the umpire's liking. Shivam Dube fails to squeeze it away and KL Rahul is unhappy with the call. The review is taken as well and the third umpire concludes that it is very close but the original decision of wide is upheld.

Excellent comeback from Mohsin Khan after conceding a six off the first ball, just two singles off the next five balls. Goes full and wide with pace on, Ruturaj Gaikwad looks to shuffle across and play it behind square leg but misses again.

16.51

Slower and into the porch but well wide of off stump, taking it away from Dube's hitting arc. Dube stands tall and hammers it through covers for just a single.

16.41

Hard length angled well across the off stump, tapped away in front of point for a single.

16.30

Nicely bowled again! Slower this time, on a hard length and pushed well across the off stump, Ruturaj Gaikwad reaches out but can't get bat on it. Called good by the umpire but Gaikwad reviews it. The replays show that Gaikwad was already a long way outside off and the original decision stands.

16.20

Switches to over the stumps and goes full, angling it away from the right-hander, Ruturaj Gaikwad looks to shuffle across and sweep it away but is well beaten.

16.54

16.41

Deepak Hooda is the new batter in.

16.3W

OUT! CAUGHT! Matheesha Pathirana breaks the partnership and the stadium has come back alive. Bowls the fuller delivery into the stumps, Nicholas Pooran looks to launch it out of the park over the bowler's end but only gets the elevation sending the ball high up in the night sky in front of long off. Shardul Thakur from deep gets under the ball and takes a good reverse cup catch.

16.21

Short of a length, way outside off, Marcus Stoinis reaches out and manages to toe end it to cover for a single.

16.10

Digs a sharp bouncer with pace on over middle, Marcus Stoinis looks to ramp but withdraws the shot hoping for it to be called a wide.

Strategic Break! Chennai will be very happy about this break in play as Lucknow were just starting to boss things out in the middle and this will break their momentum a bit. It has been an excellent run chase with both teams giving it their all but Lucknow have two set batters at the crease and need 54 from 24 balls which is tough but certainly gettable in this day and age. Chennai have an ace up their sleeve in thee form of Matheesha Pathirana who has two overs left but it might not matter if someone else can't provide a decent over from the other end. Let's see who clinches this game. The ball also seems to be changed as the previous one picked up too much dew and Pathirana is brought back into the attack right away.

17.21

Full and wide again, turns out to be a low full toss, Shivam Dube slashes it away off the outside edge to short third and they pick up a quick single.

WIDE! Looks for wide yorker and gets the length spot on but the line seems to be just too wide for the umpire's liking. Shivam Dube fails to squeeze it away and KL Rahul is unhappy with the call.

15.36

SIX! Back-to-back! That is ordinary bowling from Yash Thakur. Short ball around off with no bite on it and Shivam Dube just rocks back and pulls it handsomely over deep mid-wicket for a biggie.

15.26

SIX! Carries all the way! Looks to go full at the toes but just misses his mark, Shivam Dube clears the front leg and launches it high and over the cow corner fence for a maximum.

15.11

Bowled a bit fuller and in the channel outside off, Ruturaj Gaikwad waits for it and punches it square to deep point for a single.

Strategic Break! This has been a fine batting effort thus far from Chennai on a slow track and their skipper has led from the front. With 5 overs left, they will look to get close to that 200-run mark and with plenty of batting to come, they might just get that score. Lucknow have been sloppy in the field, allowing a lot of twos and now will look for wickets in order to slow down the scoring rate. Let's see how the first innings pans out.

There is a huge appeal from Marcus Stoinis for LBW and KL Rahul does review it but Ball Tracking shows that the ball would have gone over the stumps.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain of Chennai says that he has to work on the toss as he has lost it seven times now and batting first is not new and there could be some dew in the later half but this deck could surprise them. Adds that they just want to go out there and express themselves batting first and not think a lot about totals. States that they have one change in the playing XI with Daryl Mitchell coming in for Rachin Ravindra. On the next stretch of home games he says that the support has been great and to exploit the home conditions in this crucial part of the tournament will suit them and says he will bat at the top of the order.

KL Rahul, the captain of Lucknow says that they will bowl first as he reckons there will be dew later on and that could help their batting. Adds that it was a great result last time around and they did well in all three respects of the game but it is a different ball game here in Chennai and is looking forward to it. Informs that they are going with the same team and ends by saying that it is not about quieting the opposition and just to play good cricket.

Chennai's recent tinkering with their opening pair hasn't yielded the desired results, highlighting the importance of stability at the top. The success of the top three batters has historically been pivotal for Chennai, and their fortunes will heavily rely on Rachin Ravindra finding his rhythm in this crucial home game. Fortunately, the middle order, anchored by Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja, has consistently delivered, ensuring strong finishes in matches. While the batting has been a source of strength, the bowling lineup has raised some concerns due to inconsistent performances. However, returning to the familiar confines of their home ground often proves advantageous for Chennai, allowing them to capitalize on their strengths. With an unbeaten record in their home games so far this season, Chennai will undoubtedly enter this contest as a formidable force, poised to continue their winning streak at their fortress.

Hello and welcome to the highly anticipated reverse fixture clash between Chennai and Lucknow at the legendary MA Chidambaram Stadium in match number 39 of the Indian T20 League. It's a rare occurrence to witness two teams facing off against each other in consecutive games, adding an extra layer of intrigue to this showdown. Chennai will be eager to turn the tables and rectify the outcomes that went against them in their previous encounter in Lucknow.

... MATCH DAY ...

In the heated race for the Indian T20 League playoffs, two formidable contenders, Chennai and Lucknow, clash once again in quick succession. Lucknow dominated the previous encounter, securing a comfortable victory with KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock's formidable 134-run partnership setting the tone. While the openers shine, consistency is expected from Indian batters like Deepak Hooda and Ayush Badoni. However, they have two of the best big-hitters in Nicholas Pooran and Marcus Stoinis who have been making an impact in the middle order. Mayank Yadav's potential return adds a lethal edge to Lucknow's pace attack which has been led well by Yash Thakur and Mohsin Khan, while the spin duo of Krunal Pandya and Ravi Bishnoi has been economical, dictating play in the middle overs. The only problem is their foreign pacers haven't done that well and they are being forced to rotate between Naveen-ul-Haq, Shamar Joseph, and Matt Henry. Meanwhile, Chennai, renowned for their home-ground advantage at Chepauk, are determined to bounce back. Despite a recent loss to the same opponents, they remain resilient. While Rachin Ravindra and Ajinkya Rahane show spark, Ruturaj Gaikwad's form is promising, and Shivam Dube's power-hitting in the middle order is sensational. Ravindra Jadeja's promotion yielded a fifty, adding depth to their lineup alongside Moeen Ali and the talented Sameer Rizvi. MS Dhoni has got limited opportunities down the order but when he has, he has turned back time and showed that he still has it. Mustafizur Rahman leads Chennai's bowling charge, with Matheesha Pathirana showcasing exceptional yorkers reminiscent of Lasith Malinga. However, Deepak Chahar and Tushar Deshpande need to elevate their performances as the league enters a crucial phase. Eager to avenge their previous defeat, Chennai aims to strengthen their position at the table in front of their home fans. The stage is set for another gripping showdown, with both teams eyeing a crucial victory in the playoff race.
