Right then, the apprentice gets a win over the master as Rishabh Pant and Delhi get a crucial win over reigning champions Chennai to end another Super Sunday in the 2024 Indian T20 League. Next up, a new week dawns and the only team yet to play at home will be playing at home as winless Mumbai take on unbeaten Rajasthan at the Wankehde Stadium in Mumbai on Monday, 1 April. That game will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) but you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up. Cheers!

Khaleel Ahmed is the Player of the Match for his fine bowling display up top. Khaleel says that he has put in a lot of hard work in the domestic circuit and has played a lot of matches which has helped him know his bowling better. Adds that in T20 cricket, odds are in favor of the batter so it is good to bowl when the ball is swinging. Mentions that he tried to figure out a way to stay fit and adds that when you play red-ball cricket continuously, you get to know a lot more about how the ball behaves. Ends by saying that the ultimate goal is definitely to represent the national side once again.

Rishabh Pant, the skipper of Delhi says that the bowlers have been clinical and they as a team have learned from their mistakes. Mentions Prithvi Shaw who worked hard consistently and they had to give him the chance on which he did pretty well. Appreciates Mukesh Kumar despite being injured and bowling superbly in the death. Talks about himself and says that he took enough time for himself to get ready and worked hard after waiting for one and a half years to keep doing what he loves and improving. Mentions that his only thought process was his self belive to make a strong comeback.

The Presentation ceremony...

Anrich Nortje, the Delhi speedster is down for a chat. He says that his body felt a lot better in this game but he is talking it game by game. Adds that the training has been going really well and he is focusing on where to land it as he generally likes to go for straight yorkers rather than wide yorkers. Mentions that they are building up now and the starts have been nice in the last two games and he can also feed off that energy as the 3rd or 4th change bowler.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, the skipper of Chennai says that he was pretty much happy with the bowling effort after the kind of start Delhi got off to. Adds that the wicket had some seam movement and spongy bounce in the second innings which made it difficult for them and not being able to get hold of the first 3 or 4 overs made a big difference. Mentions that the extra seam movement let them reel in the game and it was just about trying to catch up as they failed to get one or two big overs which could've been important. States that after two good games, it doesn't worry them a lot to lose a game with a margin of 20 runs and it's just a matter of a few hits here and there.

Earlier in the game, Rishabh Pant won the toss and opted to put runs on the board on a ground where the odds were heavily stacked in favour of the team chasing but his decision was brilliantly backed by the opening pair of David Warner and Prithvi Shaw. The duo scored 62 runs in the Powerplay and added 93 runs in total for the first wicket before Warner fell after reaching his fifty. Rishabh Pant came up the order at number 3 and after Delhi lost a few wickets in the middle phase, Pant notched up a valiant fifty to take his side over the 190-run mark which was a very competitive total. As for Chennai, it was Matheesha Pathirana who was the star with 3 top wickets to his name and Tushar Deshpande too bowled a very economical spell. However, Deepak Chahar, Mustafizur Rahman and Ravindra Jadeja were a bit off-color and couldn't keep the runs in check. In reply, Chennai began slowly and wickets in the middle phase cost them dearly as Delhi won the contest by 20 runs.

Chennai knew 192 was chasable but that prolific opening pair of skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra just couldn't get going. Rachin played and missed a lot of deliveries and Gaikwad was sent packing very early. With the score at 7/2, Ajinkya Rahane and Daryl Mitchell stitched together a steady stand and got Chennai into a position from where they could do something positive. However, Mitchell fell and then they lost three wickets in quick succession. There was a late blitz from MS Dhoni who rolled back the years and finished unbeaten on 37 runs off just 16 balls but by then, it was a bridge too far for Chennai.

After having put on a solid total of 191 runs on the board, Delhi started brilliantly with the ball as Khaleel Ahmed and Ishant Sharma bowled immaculate lines and lengths and the former even picked up a couple of big wickets while remaining highly economical. In the middle overs, they did allow one stand to build and the Impact Player, Rasikh Dar couldn't make much of an impact but Mukesh Kumar certainly got Delhi firmly in front by picking up 3 wickets in his first two overs. Mukesh and Khaleel did close out decently but Anrich Nortje also conceded 20 runs in the final over. However, they had taken a far superior lead before the death overs that it didn't matter in this game.

Well, that was some sensational ball striking from the evergreen MS Dhoni but it wasn't enough for Chennai. One of the finest bowling performances so far in this year's tournament, well it was for most part of the run chase before it got a bit nervy at the death but the bowlers stuck to the plans and Delhi have finally got their first win of the campaign. On the other hand, Chennai lose their first match of the season and only Kolkata and Rajasthan remain as unbeaten teams.

Commentary

We are back for the all-important run chase! The umpires are back out in the middle and so are the players of Delhi who huddle up and get a few last words of wisdom from skipper Rishabh Pant. It will be the pairing of Rachin Ravindra and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad to open the innings for Chennai. It will be Khaleel Ahmed to start the proceedings for Delhi with the ball in hand. Away we go..

... The Run Chase ...

Chennai initiated their bowling attack with precision in the initial overs, applying pressure on Delhi's batsmen. However, their plans were thwarted by the relentless assault launched by the opposition openers, who began dictating terms. As Chennai found themselves trailing in the game, Mustafizur Rahman was reintroduced into the attack for his second over after an expensive first one. To Chennai's relief, Rahman struck gold, dismissing the dangerous David Warner, courtesy of an extraordinary catch by Matheesha Pathirana, which injected new life into their campaign. The momentum continued to swing Chennai's way when Ravindra Jadeja claimed the crucial wicket of Prithvi Shaw, who was looking ominous and posed a significant threat to Chennai's aspirations. However, the turning point arrived in the 15th over when Matheesha Pathirana once again left an indelible mark on the game. With his deceptive pace, Pathirana shattered the stumps twice in quick succession, further tilting the scales in Chennai's favour which allowed them to stem the flow of runs and restrict Delhi to a total of 191 runs. With a history of successful chases on this ground and the pitch favouring batters, Chennai will fancy their chances to gun this one down and make it 3 in a row. Will Delhi come out all guns blazing to dismantle the momentum Chennai are carrying? We shall soon find out as the chase comes to you in a bit.

David Warner is up for a quick chat. He says that they felt anywhere between 185 and 195 runs was par and 200-plus would have been great but will take this total. Adds that they tried to build on a good start but lost a couple of wickets and credits Pant for the way he played. Mentions that he is happy to see Pant come back into form and adds that bowling into the wicket was useful as the ball didn't quite come on at times.

After winning the toss and surprisingly opting to bat first, Delhi began their innings cautiously, with both David Warner and Prithvi Shaw taking their time to settle into their rhythm. However, once they found their footing, the duo unleashed a flurry of boundaries after the fourth over, showcasing their batting prowess and setting the perfect platform for Delhi at the end of the powerplay, with the scoreboard reading 62 runs without any loss of wickets. The breakthrough for Chennai came in the form of an extraordinary catch by Matheesha Pathirana, who took a stunning screamer to dismiss the dangerous David Warner, thus breaking the formidable opening partnership. Following Warner's departure, Mitchell Marsh and Tristan Stubbs fell victim to quick wickets in a single over, momentarily halting Delhi's momentum after their solid start. Rishabh Pant's decision to promote himself to number 3 in the batting order proved effective, as he anchored the innings and notched up a well-deserved half-century, steering Delhi towards a competitive total of 191 runs. However, with the dew factor potentially affecting the conditions later in the match, Delhi will need to bowl exceptionally well to defend this total against a formidable Chennai batting lineup.

Chennai has staged an impressive comeback after Delhi appeared to be cruising towards a total beyond the 200-run mark. Matheesha Pathirana's brilliance both in the field and with the ball has played a pivotal role in restricting Delhi to a competitive total of 191 runs at the end of the first innings.

Just one more to end! Mustafizur Rahman finally nails the wide yorker and this one Axar Patel can only jam it out in front of point for a single. 12 runs come off the final over and Delhi finish with 191/5 on the board!

19.51

Another juicy full toss goes for just a single. This is bowled at a comfortable height and outside off, Abishek Porel slaps it away firmly in front of sweeper cover and wants two but is sent back by the senior partner in Axar Patel.

19.42

Cleverly done again by Abishek Porel. Quite full and wide, Porel shuffles well across the off stump and just scoops it down towards fine leg for a couple of runs.

19.31

Axar Patel misses out and Mustafizur Rahman is let off the hook here. Misses the yorker and ends up bowling a low full toss close to the off stump. Patel looks to drive but chops it back past the stumps to short fine leg for a single.

19.32nb

No ball! Oh, dear! Another extra and Mustafizur Rahman isn't quite landing his deliveries as well as he would have liked to. A juicy full toss on middle stump, Abishek Porel is unable to get a hold of it and ends up just swatting it down to long on for a single. Free Hit coming up...

19.31wd

WIDE! Goes full and wide for a third time in a row and this one does land beyond the tramline, Abishek Porel misses and a wide is called.

19.24

FOUR! Nicely played! Full and wide again in the blockhole, Abishek Porel reaches out and deliberately opens the bat face to guide it over short third man for a boundary.

19.10

A wide is given by the umpire but Chennai have reviewed it. Full and wide outside off flirting with the tramline, Abishek Porel watches it closely and leaves it alone. The replays indicate that the ball landed just inside the tramline and the wide call is revoked.

Length ball angled into the pads, flicked away to deep square leg for a single and 17 runs come off that over.

Abishek Porel walks out to bat next for Delhi.

18.5W

OUT! CAUGHT! Matheesha Pathirana does get his man eventually and Rishabh Pant has to walk back. Drags the length back this time and bowls it over the stumps, Pant looks to stay put and launch it over deep mid-wicket but miscues the shot completely over mid off. Ruturaj Gaikwad races in from long off and takes a stunning catch by diving to his left. Pathirana gets his third wicket of the game and Pant departs after a stellar knock.

18.44

FOUR MORE! The FIFTY also comes up for the Delhi skipper and Rishabh Pant is well and truly back! Goes for the wide yorker at a searing pace but ends up serving a low full toss, Pant reaches out and slices it away firmly past deep point for another boundary.

18.34

FOUR! That was bowled at over 150 clicks and went back at a rate of knots! Full and straight again, Rishabh Pant takes the front leg out of the way and drills it to the right of Ajinkya Rahane at long on for a boundary. Matheesha Pathirana under pressure for the first time in this game.

18.26

SIX! Wow, what a shot! Looks for the toe-crushing yorker and misses it by an inch or two, Rishabh Pant hangs back and whips it away using the wrists. The ball goes hard and flat and wide of long on for a maximum.

18.12

Length ball around off stump, Rishabh Pant stays deep in his crease and heaves it away in front of deep mid-wicket for a couple for runs.

Just short! Pitched up in and around the off stump, Rishabh Pant looks to loft it over long on but doesn't get the desired connection. The ball goes on the bounce to Rachin Ravindra at long on and they get a single.

17.56

SIX! Up, up and away! Glimpses of Rishabh Pant at his best there. Another off-paced delivery, bowled on a good length and angled into the hitting arc. Pant gets across a touch and swings it away with just one hand over deep backward square leg for a maximum.

17.41b

Bye! Nicely bowled but they do get an extra run. Looked like the off cutter and bowled fuller outside off, Axar Patel looks to swing across the line but misses and MS Dhoni fails to collect the ball cleanly as he gets a bad bounce. They scamper across for a bye.

17.31

Goes full and wide now and gets it almost dead on, Rishabh Pant reaches out and toe-ends it on the full down the ground for a single.

17.24

FOUR! Much needed for Rishabh Pant and Delhi! Dug in short at just 120 clicks and trying to angle it at the face, Pant gets across a bit and bludgeons the pull over the square leg region for a boundary.

17.11

Bowled back of a length, a bit slower and angled in from around off, Axar Patel bends his back a bit and dabs it down to short third for one.

OUT! TAKEN! Two in two for Mukesh Kumar and Sameer Rizvi has to walk back for a golden duck! Pace on this time from Mukesh as he bowls this one on a hard length and on a tight line around off stump. The ball nips back in a bit and Rizvi gets caught on the crease. The ball goes off the outer edge of the bat as Rizvi looks to close the bat face and low to the left of short third where Khaleel Ahmed takes a fine sharp catch. Mukesh on a hat-trick now.

Strategic break! Delhi are currently in the driver's seat, steadily chipping away wickets at regular intervals, and maintaining a firm grip on the game. However, it's worth noting that Chennai still possess a wealth of batting firepower in their lineup, capable of turning the game on its head. Delhi will look to maintain their tight bowling while Chennai will have to go big right away with 90 more runs needed off 39 balls. With that Sameer Rizvi walks out to bat next for Chennai.

Strategic break! Chennai has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround, largely credited to the exceptional performance of Matheesha Pathirana, who has showcased brilliance both in the field and with the ball. As the game enters its crucial phase, the onus now falls heavily on Delhi's skipper, Rishabh Pant, to seize control and lead the charge against the opposition bowlers in the final four overs. With a solid foundation laid earlier in the innings, Pant's aggressive approach will be the key for Delhi.

Bowls it a tad fuller and outside off, David Warner reaches to end and looks to carve it through off but gets a thick inside edge back onto his pads.

Swings this away from the left-hander. On a length, just outside off, the ball moves further away from David Warner as he tries to cut it square on off but misses.

Delhi and Prithvi Shaw are up and moving! An away swinger from Deepak Chahar pitched on a fuller length around off, Prithvi Shaw drives it on the full through the gap at cover for a couple of runs to get off the mark.

0.10

Starts from over the wicket and bowls it right on the money. On a fuller length and attacking the stumps, Prithvi Shaw flicks it off his pads straight to the fielder at short mid-wicket.

We are all set for the game to begin and it is a sea of yellow at a ground which is supposedly Delhi's home ground! The two umpires stride out to the middle and there is a big roar as the Chennai players get together in a huddle before taking the field. It will be Prithvi Shaw who will open the innings alongside David Warner for Delhi. It will be Deepak Chahar to take the new ball and has a couple of slips to begin with. Let's play... Uh, oh! There's some issue and we have a slightly delayed start and after a couple of minutes, it's time to get things underway.

Ruturaj Gaikwad the skipper of Chennai says they wanted to field first with this being a fresh wicket and the first game at this venue. Adds that this seems like a home game and they plan to keep things simple and win individual moments. On his captaincy, he says that the group is pretty experienced and there are few guys to guide him and he has captained for his state but keeps learning with every game. Concludes that they go unchanged into this game.

Rishabh Pant the skipper of Delhi says that they will bat first as the wicket looks good and they want to put runs on the board. Adds that home advantage makes a lot of difference but they have practiced on this track. Informs that Kuldeep is out due to a niggle and Prithvi Shaw comes in for him and also Ricky Bhui is out and Ishant Sharma comes back in. Ends by saying that they have bowled well in patches and they need a bit of consistency.

The defending champions, Chennai, have seamlessly continued their winning momentum from the previous season, securing two consecutive victories and claiming the top spot on the points table. Ruturaj Gaikwad's captaincy debut has been auspicious, which is reflected in his batting along with Rachin Ravindra providing steadfast starts for the team. The middle order led by Shivam Dube and Ajinkya Rahane has showcased commendable resilience, with crowd favourite MS Dhoni yet to even make an appearance at the crease. The bowling unit has been a pillar of consistency, leaving little room for improvement. Chennai's dominant performance thus far suggests they are poised for yet another successful campaign and Delhi will be eager to disrupt their momentum in this game. Will they be able to do so and get their first 2 points? Or will Chennai continue their solid spree to get past Delhi and make it 3 wins in a row? We shall soon find out as the Toss and team news comes to you in a bit.

Delhi find themselves teetering in the penultimate position on the points table, a disheartening placement attributed to their back-to-back losses despite glimpses of promise from various players. This team will be poised to rectify their minor execution errors, which have unfortunately led to defeats from seemingly commanding positions. Once again, the Australian opening pair of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh will be tasked with laying a solid foundation up top, against the formidable Chennai bowling attack. Tristan Stubbs has emerged as a linchpin in the middle order, while skipper Rishabh Pant will be eager to convert his promising starts into substantial contributions. Despite a lukewarm start, the bowlers are yet to hit their stride, but they must summon their best performances to contain the in-form Chennai batters.

The cricket aficionados are in for a treat as the hosts, Delhi square off against Chennai in what promises to be another riveting encounter to conclude the second week of this thrilling edition.

... MATCH DAY ...

It is time for another doubleheader Sunday in the Indian T20 League and marking the end of the second week of the 2024 competition is Match number 13 between Delhi and Chennai in Visakhapatnam. Two teams who have had contrasting starts to the season and both of them will be eyeing a win but for very different reasons. Reigning champions Chennai might have had a new captain at the helm in the form of Ruturaj Gaikwad but so far they have been spotless winning two games out of two and do look like one of the teams to beat this season. So far, they have played two games in Chennai and have won both of them quite comfortably and in their previous games against last time's finalists Gujarat, Chennai were simply outstanding. They scored 200-plus runs and ended up winning the game by more than 50 runs and at the moment, everything seems to be clicking for them. the new opening pair of skipper Gaikwad along with the young Kiwi Rachin Ravindra has proved to be very positive and the destructiveness of Shivam Dube in the middle order just gives them that edge. Ajinkya Rahane and Daryl Mitchell have also done a fine job with the bat and the latter has contributed a few economical overs with the ball as well. Chennai have also got their Impact Player situation pretty bang on, swapping the likes of Matheesha Pathirana and Shivam Dube for each other as required and MS Dhoni has been able to just relax and help out Gaikwad in the field. Delhi on the other hand have had a tough start to the campaign just like last season where those early losses really hurt them and that pattern seems to be returning here. David Warner though has been solid for them at the top but needs a bit more support so he can kick on and get those big scores and not just 30s or 40s. Skipper Rishabh Pant has also managed to conjure up a few runs but hasn't been fluent at all and the likes of Abishek Porel and Tristan Stubbs have had to fill in. Mitchell Marsh hasn't quite been able to replicate his success in the international format in the league while opening alongside Warner and there hasn't been any sign of Prithvi Shaw so far which is a bit strange given that he is fit and available for selection. They do need to work out their batting order but the bowling too has left a lot to be desired as they let things slip against Rajasthan in their previous game after having the opposition at just 58/2 in the first 10 overs and then they ended up conceding 180-plus. The spinners have been more than decent but the pacers just have been very inconsistent and Delhi need to figure out their best combination before its too late. Chennai have generally had an upperhand in this fixture and are in pristine form as well but expect Delhi to come swinging hard as they look to notch up their first win of the season. Who are you backing to win this one?
