Commentary

Right then, that is all from this game but the action in the Indian T20 League isn't over yet, not by any means. It is a doubleheader Saturday and the second match of the day is underway with Lucknow taking on Rajasthan and Lucknow are batting first in that game. You can simply switch tabs and catch our coverage of that game. Cheers!

Jake Fraser-McGurk is the Player of the Match for his spectacular knock. Jake says that he was pretty7 nervous going up against Bumrah and was watching his footage but reckons when you are out there, it all goes out of the way and it is just about watching the ball and hitting and adds that it is good testing yourself against the best in the world. Menti0ons that when he is not watching the ball properly, he isn't able to time the ball well and says that his form is good for him and the team and they have confidence in him batting up the order. Adds from the outside also you can see the level of the competition and how it is more competitive than other tournaments.

Rishabh Pant, Delhi's skipper says that they were happy with the score. Adds that the Impact player rule is making it difficult for the teams. Mentions that the bowler needs to be comfortable with the keeper coming up to the stumps. It was to stop Tim David from getting out of the crease and it helped them. Lauds Jake Fraser-McGurk who has been amazing for the squad and he is getting better each day. Ends by saying that they are not thinking too ahead and taking one game at a time.

Earlier in the game, Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to bowl first and this decision back-fired immediately as Jake Fraser-McGurk went into overdrive mode and smashed the Mumbai bowlers, along with Jasprit Bumrah as Delhi scored 92 runs in the first 6 overs. Mumbai did get some control back once Jake got out as Abishek Porel couldn't quite kick on but Shai Hope played a fine cameo of 41 runs from 17 balls to keep the scoring rate high. Rishabh Pant wasn't at his best but got some useful runs and it was Tristan Stubbs who is having a fine season who propelled Delhi over the 250-run mark. Even after getting hit for 18 runs in his first over, Bumrah came back really strong and went for 17 runs in his next 3 overs. Apart from him and Piyush Chawla, everyone else was punished with skipper Hardik Pandya and Luke Wood really taking a whacking. In the chase, Delhi kept their noses ahead all throughout and just when it became really close at the death, they were able to get the wickets and won the game by 10 runs.

Rasikh Dar, one of the stars of Delhi's win is down for a chat. He says that the wicket was flat but they were ready for the challenge. Adds that he is playing to the team’s demand and trying to fulfil the role. Says that he aims to be confident and back his skills. Mentions that they plan during the game and in the game on what to bowl and it helps them. Closes by saying that getting the keeper up to the stumps in the 18th over was a smart move and it worked for them.

Hardik Pandya, the captain of Mumbai says that the game is getting a lot closer and the competition is top-notch. Adds that they had the belief to chase it down and backed themselves. Shares that a couple of overs in the middle were slow and that they should have taken a few more chances. Lauds Jake Fraser-McGurk who played a calculated innings and was smart in the approach. Ends by saying that he wouldn’t have changed his decision at the toss.

Mumbai needed 258 runs for the win and got off to a quick start in the first two overs after which they lost Rohit Sharma and when the Powerplay ended, they had lost their top three batters for 65 runs. Tilak Varma however took the reigns and along with skipper Hardik Pandya launched a counterattack. Pandya went berserk in one over from Kuldeep Yadav and injected momentum into the chase before he was eventually caught out. Varma kept on pressing and brought up a half-century before Tim David went ballistic and gave Mumbai a real shot at victory. However, he got out in the 18th over leaving Varma still quite a bit to do. Varma took the game into the final over but got run out and Mumbai were handed yet another defeat and they are now looking more and more out of the playoff race but still have five games to play.

Delhi just had that bit more and those early wickets were really the telling factor in this game. Lizaad Williams showed great signs in the very first over but was a bit wayward after which Khaleel Ahmed sent back Rohit Sharma in the third over, opening the doors for his side. Mukesh Kumar got Ishan Kishan off his first delivery and then Khaleel got the big wicket of Suryakumar Yadav in the final over of the Powerplay. However, a rare thing happened as Kuldeep Yadav was put away by Mumbai and failed to get into the game at all. Delhi's Impact Player on the other hand, Rasikh Dar made more than just an impact as he finished with 3 wickets and bowled a couple of crucial overs atn the death, especially the penultimate over. In the end, Mukesh was able to hold his nerve and get his side over the ropes.

Pheww! Yet another high-scoring encounter in the Indian T20 League and it went right down to the wire but in the end, it is a resurgent Delhi who have won the game and have made it 4 wins out of the last 5 matches. Delhi also avenge the defeat they suffered at the hands of Mumbai in the reverse fixture at the Wankhede Stadium. Also, once again the match total surpassed 500 runs and is the highest aggregate T20 total at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

OUT! CAUGHT! Mukesh Kumar finishes with three-wickets and Delhi win by 10 runs in a nail-biting finish at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Full toss on the middle stump line. Piyush Chawla miscues the loft toward the long-on region. Shai Hope completes the catch and Delhi have two more points in the bag. This was referred for a waist-high no-ball by Chawla but the third-umpire checked the replay and called it a fair ball.  A nervy win but Delhi will take it with both hands. Delhi climb to number 5 in the table.

19.54

19.36

SIX! CLUBBED! Short of a length, around off. Luke Wood nails it and pulls it over the deep mid-wicket boundary for a maximum.

19.22

In the air and safe! Knuckle ball on the middle stump line. Luke Wood heaves it high in the air toward the mid-wicket region. Jake Fraser-McGurk runs in from the boundary but fails to take the catch.

OUT! RUN OUT! Huge wicket for Delhi. Slower length ball on the middle and leg stump line. Tilak Varma miscues the heave to the deep square leg region and calls for the second. Sumit Kumar, the substitute fielder, throws it from the deep and Rishabh Pant does the rest. Tilak Varma puts the dive but is well short of his crease and Mumbai are eight down!

Is that a runout? Looks like it and Tilak Varma is distraught. No need to go upstairs as the onfield umpire has raised the finger. Gun arm from the substitute fielder Sumit Kumar.

Who will bowl the final over? Will it be death-over specialist Mukesh Kumar or Lizaad Williams? It will be the experienced Mukesh. Tilak Varma on strike, can Mukesh defend 24 runs? Not as easy as it seems.

17.51

Pitched full, at the stumps. Drilled to mid-on for a single.

OUT! LBW! A loud appeal and given. Mukesh Kumar is pumped! Bowls it full on the middle stump line. Tim David plays across the line and misses a straighter one. He gets pinned in front and the umpire raises the finger. Tim David goes for the review. The ball tracking shows wickets hitting and Tim David is a goner.

17.36

SIX! Wow, is this the over that turns the game on its head? Remember, the 18th over of Delhi's innings went for 26 runs, this has gone for 16 already. Mukesh Kumar misses his mark and serves a full toss around off, Tim David walks across and gets it in his arc before smoking it over wide long on for another maximum.

Commentary

Welcome back to then run chase. The players and umpires return to the park. It will be Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma to open for Mumbai. For Delhi, the debutant Lizaad Williams, will start with the ball. Here we go! Uh, oh! Williams slips on the very first ball and we have a bit of a halt as he gets his shoes changed but thankfully, Williams didn't twist a muscle while slipping.

…THE RUN CHASE…

Right then, Mumbai needs 258 runs to pull off a win. They have the batting resources and will have to be confident. Can the visitors chase it and get much-needed two points or will the home side continue their good form? We shall find out. Join us in a bit for the second essay.

Jake Fraser-KMcGurk, the star of the show for Delhi is down for a chat. He says that it is his role to try and get as many runs as he can in the first 6 overs. Adds that he isn't looking for ones and twos at all unless it is the last ball of the over of a mishit. Mentions that it is about getting the base right and that took him a few years to develop and reckons that there's a lot of timing involved but some muscle power as well when the ball is mishit.

It was a flat wicket and Mumbai bowlers were taken to the cleaners right from the beginning. Jasprit Bumrah and Piyush Chawla were the pick of the Mumbai bowlers as they went for less than 10 runs to the over and took a wicket each. Luke Wood and Mohammad Nabi were the other wicket-takers but it was an off day overall for the bowling department of Mumbai.

Another day, another score over 250 in the Indian T20 League. Delhi have batted exceptionally well and posted a mammoth score of 257 for 4 in their 20 overs. This is also their highest score in the competition. Having put into batting first, Delhi started aggressively with Jake Fraser-McGurk scoring a blistering 84 off just 27 balls. Abishek Porel (36), Shai Hope (41), and Rishabh Pant (29) all played impressive knocks through the middle at a quick rate. Tristan Stubbs continued his good form and made an unbeaten 48 off just 25 to end the innings with a proper onslaught. The batters have done their job and the onus will be on the bowling to get it done.

Just the single to end then! Goes full and wide and gets it spot on this time, Tristan Stubbs stays back and has to fetch the ball, can't quite get under it and ends up swatting it to wide long on for a run. They look for two but decide against it and 17 runs come off the final over. Delhi finish with 257/4 on the board!

19.51

Aerial but safe! Back of a length and angled across the left-hander, Axar Patel lofts it on the bounce to deep cover and they settle for the single.

19.46

SIX! Axar Patel is no slouch with the bat! A 122-KPH nothing ball right in the slot, Axar waits for it and then just whacks it high and handsome in front of deep mid-wicket for a biggie. 250 up for up Delhi here!

19.31

DROPPED! Nehal Wadhera puts down a chance in the deep and that is heartbreaking for the bowler. Full and wide again, Tristan Stubbs gets low and gets under the ball before swatting it away flat towards deep cover where Wadhera is a bit slow to come in and drops the catch. Stubbs was ball-watching and hence, gets only a single, poor cricket all around.

19.31wd

WIDE! Full and wide outside off, slinging further away, Tristan Stubbs stays leg side of the ball and makes a good leave.

19.26

SIX! Hoicked away over the fence! Back of a length and outside off, sitting up for the batter, Tristan Stubbs waits a bit and then clubs it over wide long on for a biggie.

19.11

18.51

Jasprit Bumrah once again showing his class here! Full and well wide of the off stump, dipping late, Tristan Stubbs reaches out and can only hit it down to long off for a single.

18.41

On a good length outside off, Axar Patel punches it towards deep cover for one and that brings up the highest total ever for Delhi in the Indian T20 League - 238 runs.

18.31lb

Leg bye! Missing leg by a fair bit! Quick and full at 143.6 clicks and angling in at the legs, a full toss but cam quickly and Tristan Stubbs played all over it. The ball pings the pads and rolls on the off side for a leg bye.

18.21

Full and quick angled in at the stumps, Axar Patel backs away and hits it through extra cover for a single.

18.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! Jasprit Bumrah does get the better of Rishabh Pant and provides Mumbai a bit of relief here. A well-directed slower bumper over middle stump and angling in at a difficult height. Pant tries to take it on but can't quite get on top of the bounce and pulls it off the top edge down to fine leg where Rohit Sharma takes a safe catch. That's the 7th time Bumrah has dismissed Pant in the competition's history.

Axar Patel is the new batter for Delhi.

17.54

FOUR! No mercy from Tristan Stubbs as he shows brute force after some finesse! Banged in a bit over leg stump, Stubbs backs away and muscles the pull shot in between long on and deep mid-wicket for a boundary.

17.44

FOUR! This is pure class from Tristan Stubbs and Luke Wood cannot believe it. Goes for the straight yorker and misses it by an inch or two, Stubbs brings out the reverse flick again and gets it flat over the leaping man at short third for another boundary.

17.36

SIX! The other way now and that is skillful from Tristan Stubbs. Full and outside off, Stubbs goes for the scoop but adjusts late and reverse-flicks it over the third man fence for a maximum.

17.24

FOUR! Almost an action replay of the previous delivery! Full and quick, angling across off, Tristan Stubbs shuffles across and scoops it fine of short fine leg for another boundary.

17.14

FOUR! Nicely done! Full and wide, angled across the right-hander, Tristan Stubbs pre-meditates a bit, shuffles across and scoops it over short fine leg for a boundary.

Who will bowl the final over? Will it be death-over specialist Mukesh Kumar or Lizaad Williams? It will be the experienced Mukesh. Tilak Varma on strike, can Mukesh defend 24 runs? Not as easy as it seems.

Good-length delivery on off and angling in, Tristan Stubbs stands tall and taps it down through mid on for an easy single.

Strategic Break! A much more balanced middle phase with Mumbai being able to pick up more wickets and just slow down the run-scoring a bit. However, a blistering cameo from Shai Hope has kept Delhi hovering well above 12 runs per over and they will be eyeing something around 250 runs. Mumbai have a couple of overs of Jasprit Bumrah up their sleeve and it will be interesting to see how Delhi counter him. With that said, Bumrah does come back into the attack as Mumbai recognize that this is the vital pair for Delhi.

Toss Update - Mumbai have won the coin toss and opted to BOWL first.

Mumbai, on the flip side, have had a mixed-bag season so far. They have won just three games out of eight and are placed ninth in the table. In their last outing against Rajasthan, the visitors made 179 after batting first on the back of runs from Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera. The bowlers failed to contain the opposition and lost by 9 wickets. Only Piyush Chawla had a decent outing but the rest of the bowling unit failed to deliver. In the reverse fixture against these two sides, Mumbai came out on top and they will hope to repeat the performance. So can Mumbai climb up the table or will Delhi continue their good run? Let's find out. Toss and team news in a bit. Stay tuned!

Hello and a warm welcome to our coverage of Match 43 in the Indian T20 League. Delhi are hosting Mumbai at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Both sides are currently in the lower half of the table and will be vying for a win. The home side Delhi, have found some momentum in recent times as they have won three of their last 4 games and have started to look like a solid unit. The hosts faced Gujarat in their last game and posted a massive score of 224 with their skipper Rishabh Pant making an unbeaten 88 off just 43 while Axar Patel with 66(43), Tristan Stubbs, and Jake Fraser-McGurk also played their part. The Delhi bowlers were taken to the cleaners as well but they managed to take the win by just 4 runs in the end. Rasikh Dar and Kuldeep Yadav shared five wickets among them and were the pick of the bowlers. Delhi will hope to keep the winning run and add two more points to their tally.

…MATCHDAY…

As the Indian T20 League 2024 is approaching its decisive phase, all teams are battling for a coveted position in the top four. In Match 43, Delhi will host Mumbai at the iconic Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi in their reverse fixture. Delhi, the home team, has leapfrogged from the bottom three to claim the sixth position in the standings after a dismal start to their campaign. This jump followed a famous victory over Gujarat, achieved by a narrow margin of just 4 runs. Delhi's batters have rediscovered their form and are displaying a notable sense of confidence. Even with David Warner's on-and-off appearances in the XI, Delhi has been holding up well, especially with the fresh opening duo of Prithvi Shaw and the Aussie standout, Jake Fraser-McGurk. Fraser-McGurk looks promising, effortlessly smashing the ball around the park. Fraser-McGurk's aggressive style at the start has definitely made life easier for the next batters. Delhi threw a curveball by sending Axar Patel in at number 3, but he totally nailed it, scoring a solid 66 off just 43 balls. It showed he's flexible enough to float around the order as needed. And Rishabh Pant? Man, what a comeback! After that nasty injury, he's been knocking it out of the park consistently. His recent 88 is proof that he's back in top form. Tristan Stubbs is really having the time of his life in this tournament. He's been the go-to guy for those game-changing final hits with the bat, and he's been doing it with some serious aggression. When it comes to bowling, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar have been absolute gems in terms of keeping things tight, especially in the tournament when life hasn't been certainly easy for the bowlers. Rasikh Dar has also joined the squad and has displayed some real promise with his bowling skills. While Khaleel Ahmed and Mukesh Kumar have been taking wickets regularly, they along with Protea pace-battery Anrich Nortje will aim to keep things tight and stem the flow of runs from their end as well. Overall, Delhi seems to have found its perfect combination and with David Warner, this team possesses a serious firepower with ball and bat. Turning our attention to Mumbai, they've upheld their reputation as slow starters once again. However, the pressure is mounting on them now, especially after the humbling defeat to Rajasthan where they lost by 9 wickets. That loss must be really itching at them, and they're in dire need of grabbing those two crucial points to relieve some of the pressure. It's become quite evident that when Mumbai's openers fail to establish a strong partnership during the Powerplay, the entire batting order ends up needing to start from scratch. In a fast-paced tournament like this, there's hardly any time to settle in. Mumbai needs more from Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma upfront. In the last game, Nehal Wadhera and Tilak Varma provided a strong finish with the bat. Skipper Hardik Pandya's form has dipped dramatically, and except for Piyush Chawla, Mumbai's bowlers were ineffective in the previous game. Jasprit Bumrah of course, has been extremely reliable, but he needs support. Overall, Mumbai needs to elevate its game plan across the board to secure a victory. Delhi has a golden opportunity to take advantage of home conditions and avenge their previous defeat against this very opposition earlier this season, but surely, Mumbai is not going to make life easier for them at all, as we all have seen over the years, that a wounded Mumbai is much more lethal. Who do you think will win?
