Commentary

Australia, on the other hand, will admit secretly that they got out of jail. They now have a full-strength squad as well, assuming that players have recovered from illnesses, so cannot give any excuses. They will be looking to put their best foot forward come Tuesday, 24th September, 2024 and win the third ODI, sealing the series, so that they can rotate their players for the remaining 2 matches. That is a day-night game, with the first ball scheduled to be bowled at 11.30 am GMT. Our build-up will begin well in advance, so do make sure to tune in. Until then, keep browsing our tabs for all the action from the Caribbean Premier League, SL-NZ, Ind-Ban, AFG-SA and even the Legends League Of Cricket. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!

Opportunity missed by England? Or experience worth its weight in gold for Australia? Views might differ from person to person. Irrespective of the experience of Australia, England simply should not have allowed the visitors to cross 240 and while batting, given that the required rate never went up to even 7, maybe a couple of soft dismissals could have been avoided - like Smith and Livingstone. But that is why these games are for, to learn and build on their learnings. England bowled way better than the first ODI, so that is a big positive.

Victorious Australian captain, MITCHELL MARSH, says that these days 270 always feels a little bit short. Adds that it felt like a new-ball wicket and early wickets could give them a chance. At the halfway mark, he admits that 270 looked enough but he wanted more. On not able to play out their 50 overs, Marsh credits Carey for taking it deep and adds that these days, batters keep on looking to score, rather than play till the end. Overall, is happy with his team's all-round display. On Australia's experience weighed up against England's inexperience, Marsh puts it down to a challenge to playing in English conditions and how can his side keep improving.

England's skipper, HARRY BROOK, says that England bowled nicely to restrict Australia to 270. Puts the loss to early wickets in the batting Powerplay for England. Admits that last-wicket partnerships are frustrating but adds that he does not think he could have done anything differently during that stand. Agrees that his side is so inexperienced that Adil Rashid is their leading run getter in ODIs from this squad! But laughs and says that they need to learn from these games, take the positives and move ahead, sticking to their plans - attacking the bowlers while batting and taking wickets with the ball.

ALEX CAREY HAS BEEN NAMED AS THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH, for his match-winning 74 and a couple of catches. Carey says that it was a quiet winter for him and adds that he spent his rest time with his family. Adds that he used to spend time indoors, working on his game. Praises England for bowling really well and has an extra word for Josh Hazlewood for hanging in with him in that last-wicket partnership. Praises all the Aussie quicks for bowling consistently well and is impressed by Aaron Hardie. On losing his spot to Josh Inglis in T20Is, Carey calls him an exciting youngster and wishes him a good future.

... THE PRESENTATION ...

Earlier in the day, England came back strongly after a decent start by Australia to have them on the ropes at 221/9 but an unlikely 49-run stand between Carey and Hazlewood took the game away from them. They were excellent with the ball throughout but perhaps took their foot off the pedal during that 10th-wicket stand and Australia pounced. It was not the best of batting effort by the Aussies, but they used their experience to forge partnerships after multiple collapses. Please stay tuned for the presentation.

We did feel at the start of the run chase that this was a Josh Hazlewood pitch. It might have been, had Matthew Short taken that catch in his first over to get rid of Phil Salt. Instead, what happened was barring Hazlewood, everyone else bowled well. Starc did not start well but got into rhythm with his swinging deliveries with the new balls and then Aaron Hardie continued his rise in Australian cricket by using the heavy ball. To ensure that Australia were not reliant on pace. Glenn Maxwell proved to be an able ally to Adam Zampa in the spin department, with combined figures of 14-1-57-3. The bowlers knew perfectly well how to use the cross-seam ball, wobbly-seam ball and had excellent changes of pace to keep England guessing throughout. The fact that they allowed only one half century stand shows that they did not allow the game to drift.

That 49-run last-wicket stand between Alex Carey and Josh Hazlewood eventually proved to be the difference in this game. Because if that had not happened, England would have been chasing well under 250. Unlike Australia, England could never really get going on this deck, which seemed to get slower by the day, with cross-seam deliveries and cutters helping the bowlers. Australia ran riot with the new balls and had England 5 down inside Powerplay 1. England then tried to show some rearguard action through their middle order but with the pitch slowing down and Australia sizing up the pitch perfectly, even after getting set, they struggled to make it big. Only Jamie Smith could cross 40 in a unit which had as many as 5 starters, including Adil Rashid's 27.

It was an intriguing pitch on offer, which seemed like a flat deck, with a tinge of grass. In fact, at the toss, Brook reckoned that there might be a bit of movement early on with the new ball and after that, as per tradition, the deck could become a batting paradise. He was correct in terms of the movement assessment but what he could not assess was the dryness in the wicket. That dryness made the balls come slowly from the pitch, which induced quite a few false shots from both sides' batters.

A 100-overs contest reduced to 85 overs with 472 runs being scored. Despite 15 overs being unused, all 20 wickets fell, which shows how difficult batting was on this wicket. The result shows that Australia have won by a comfortable margin, but Harry Brook might just look back at a few things, including his decision at the toss, when he dissects this match.

OUT! CAUGHT! Unfortunate end for England and Stone but it is what it is. A short ball, outside off, from around the wicket, Olly Stone actually exhibits good technique, in ducking, to avoid the short ball. But he takes his eyes off the ball and as a result, it comes in, hits the grille of the helmet, then his shirt, goes onto the top portion of the bat and lobs in the air. Steven Smith runs behind from slip and takes a comfortable catch. The Aussies celebrate but Stone is as still as his name. The umpire smiles and eventually raises his finger. Maybe, he felt that the wicket was too obvious. AUSTRALIA WIN BY 68 RUNS AND TAKE A 2-0 LEAD IN THE 5-MATCH SERIES!

40.10

Full and just outside off, Olly Stone pushes it uppishly back to the bowler and almost gets caught and bowled. Lands just in front.

Back to pace? Mitchell Starc brought back to wrap things up. 9-0-50-2 so far.

Olly Stone is the last man in, replacing Adil Rashid.

OUT! LBW! Well, Rashid has reviewed this but if there is no bat, there is not much hope. It was a length ball, around off, Adil Rashid tried to paddle it around the corner. He missed and was hit on the pads. Maxwell appealed and umpire Joel Wilson raised the dreaded finger. Rashid seemed to realize the mistake in the choice of his shot, because the risk in that stroke if you miss, you are gone. He had a long look at Potts, which means that he did not hit it and then took the review. Sure enough, UltraEdge detected nothing when the ball passed the bat. Ball Tracker then completed the formalities, with the ball projected to be hitting leg stump. Rashid goes for a fighting 27 (34) and England are 201/9, needing another 70 from 61 balls.

39.40

Outside off, Rashid bunts it back to the bowler.

39.31

Around off, a touch short, Potts works this through the leg side for a run.

39.20

Around off, Matthew Potts looks to cut but is beaten by the extra bounce.

39.11

Glenn Maxwell is brought back on. 5-1-12-1 so far. Around off, Adil Rashid works it through mid-wicket for a single to bring up the 200 FOR ENGLAND. 71 more needed from 65 balls.

Huge shout for LBW, but Joel Wilson is unmoved. Much closer than the previous LBW review but still looked a tad high. MP looked to play that from his crease but missed and was hit on the pads. No reviews left for Australia.

The leg spinner this time, a tad short, Matthew punches it towards the off side.

Commentary

Welcome back. Punctuality at its best as the players are back onto the field. The Aussies swarm the arena with Mitchell Starc taking the first new ball. Phil Salt and Ben Duckett will be the openers for England. Starc to Salt first up.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Elsewhere, in Berlin, there is an interesting tennis tournament going on, called the Laver Cup, a contest between two legends - Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe - only with the two as coaches. It is called Team Europe vs Team World with the two legends coaching the teams respectively. It is almost similar to the Davis Cup, consisting of singles, doubles, then reverse singles etc. The tournament features stars like Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov, Daniil Medvedev and Francis Tiafoe to boot. Lasting for only three days, today is the second day and as of now, World leads by 4 games to 2.

Ravichandran Ashwin is spinning the first Test against Bangladesh in India's way with 3 wickets from the 4 that have fallen. Chasing a mammoth 515 to win, the visitors find themselves at 158/4, with the top 3 departing after starts. Once Ashwin gets the ball to talk, he rarely allows anyone else to speak. With due respect to Bangladesh, one does feel that this game will not see a second session on Sunday.

As per the broadcast, the run chase is scheduled to begin at 1.50 pm GMT. So there is not much time to take a break. Tell you what, let's look at what's happening elsewhere in the field of sports or cricket.

Whose side are you on then? Too early to say, aye? We will have to watch a few balls in the second innings to get a better judgement. The first innings seemed like batting was a monumental ask, with the balls not quite coming onto the bat nicely. There was a tinge of grass but the surface looked dry underneath, assisting turn. If this surface stays the same, then England will definitely have a handful, against the likes of Hazlewood, Hardie and Zampa. But, as we often see in England, the pitches tend to get flatter in the second innings. If that is the case, England might just romp home inside 40 overs.

Carse's figures read an expensive 10-0-75-3, but we need to split it into spells. His first spell read 4-0-40-1, but of those, 20 came in one over alone. Add to it, he was the one to dismiss Travis Head and give the first breakthrough. The second spell of Carse was perhaps the most ordinary, reading 2-0-23-0. But then, that divine moment came when Carse was brought on in the 36th over. Australia were galloping after Drinks and on comes Carse, picking up 2 wickets in 2 balls and breaking the backbone of Australia. His final spell of 4-0-12-2 was the most decisive and perhaps could be credited for swinging the game England's way.

England would be very pleased with this bowling display, but will also understand that they allowed things to slip away. They were excellent to start with the new balls, but then let a few loose ones. Then they got back in through the middle overs but two counter-attacking stands stalled them. And having gotten rid of those two partnerships, they would have been really frustrated at bowling only 11 balls to Josh Hazlewood, in a stand of 49 deliveries. Nearly everyone bowled well at different stages but perhaps the pick was Brydon Carse's third spell.

This definitely does not look the best of pitches to bat on but Australia have got reasons to be upset. As many as 5 batters got in and then got out - with 4 of those scoring between 15 and 30. Only two batters crossed 50, Marsh being one of them, but given the touch he looked in, he definitely missed out on a century. Unfortunately for Carey, he looked in sublime touch, but could not quite play his natural innings for long. He found an able ally in Hardie but once that stand was broken, it was all about shepherding Hazlewood. His innings of 74 reminds everyone why Australia never give up, despite being down and out.

The reason one feels both teams missed out on opportunities is because Australia weathered the new ball, got to 46 inside the 9th over, but then slipped to 89/3. Then Marsh and Labuschagne revived the innings with a 56-run stand for the 4th wicket, only to see the team slipping from 145/3 to 161/6. And just when it seemed Australia would showcase their batting depth through Hardie and Carey's 55-run stand for the 7th wicket, the Kangaroos slipped again, from 216/6 to 221/9, before Carey single-handedly led a rearguard effort.

End of a bizarre first innings with both teams failing to grab opportunities and hence, both looking happy at this point in time. From 221/9, to get to 270 is a massive boost for Australia but if you ask this English team what is the score they prefer to chase, the answer would be anything less than 400. So, both parties satisfied.

44.4W

OUT! CAUGHT! England break the frustrating last-wicket partnership at last on 49. A length ball, outside off, coming in with the angle from around the wicket, Alex Carey predictably looks to go off side, backing away and punches it over cover. But he cannot quite get enough on it to clear Phil Salt at sweeper cover who makes no mistake, running in. AUSTRALIA ARE BOWLED OUT FOR 270 WITH 32 BALLS LEFT UNUSED!

44.30

A short ball, around middle, Alex pulls it straight to deep mid-wicket. Does not take the single.

44.24

FOUR! Lovely batting. Australia reach 270. A length ball, around off, Carey controls the length nicely and works it to the left of mid on, with the fielder diving to his left, but missing it.

44.14

DROPPED, FOUR! Great effort though. A short ball, outside off, slower in pace, Alex Carey swivels and pulls it towards deep mid-wicket. Actually, he mistimes it, as he plays a bit early. The ball hits the toe end of the bat but still flies away. Jacob Bethell runs a few hard yards to his right at deep mid-wicket, absolutely flies to his right to take the catch, gets to the ball but cannot hang on. Gets a hand to it and the ball deflects into the ropes behind.

OUT!

However, Jamie Smith is playing a fine knock here batting on 49 while getting good support from Brydon Carse. Full and outside off, a bit wide, slower in pace, Jamie Smith reaches out and drives it uppishly, but wide of cover. A single taken.

No spin yet. Marsh continues rotating his speedsters, looking for that 6th wicket. Mitchell Starc is back on. 5-0-35-2 so far. Might not be a bad idea to have pace and spin at opposite ends, just so that the batters don't get used to the pace.

Full and wide outside off, Smith drives it through cover for one.

A bit too straight, on leg stump, Jacob turns it towards deep mid-wicket for a run.

FOUR! CLUNK! The dots were building and Jacob Bethell shakes off the pressure in magnificent fashion. A short ball, outside off, Bethell rocks back and pulls it through mid-wicket. England need another 177 from 210 balls.

14.51

Comes forward this time and punches it through cover-point for a run.

14.40

Fuller length this time, just outside off, staying a touch low, Jamie Smith stays back to block.

14.30

On a good length, around off, coming in, well defended.

For some reason, Aaron Hardie is off the field. Jake Fraser-McGurk is on as a substitute. Not sure why, the camera pans on him and he is just sipping a drink. In the recently concluded first ODI between Afghanistan and South Africa, the umpires had prevented AM Ghazanfar to leave the field after his spell, even for relaxing. That is good discipline, as long as it is consistent across the globe.

14.21

Short, outside off, punched through point for a single.

14.10

On a good length, around off, solidly defended.

DRINKS BREAK. Well, the scorecard will say that Australia are well on top but we all know pretty well not to write off any team these days. England have looked positive right from the start and even though they have lost wickets, the shots have kept coming. Smith and Bethell have got a start, taking their partnership to 23 and there are Carse and Rashid to follow as well, who are no slouches with the bat. So the hosts will believe that if they just keep wickets in hand, be positive, the required rate will not be a worry, as it is just around 5. Australia though, will hope for 5 deliveries that hit the mark and give them a 2-0 series lead. Will be interesting to see when does spin come on and who comes on first. Will it be Zampa or one of Maxwell, Short or Head, given that a left-hander is on strike? For now, it is Hazlewood to continue.

DROPPED! But a wonderful effort. A maiden for Hardie, and with a bit of luck, could have had a wicket. A length ball, outside off, Smith comes forward and whips it across the line. The ball flies through mid-wicket and so does Matthew Short in that area. Flings himself to his left but cannot hang on. Saves the boundary, by parrying the ball towards mid on.

12.31wd

ANOTHER WIDE. Hazlewood is looking rattled or frustrated. One of the two. Nearly opens a can of lollypops for England. 11.44

FOUR! Well, a critic might call it lazy from Starc but you can excuse fast bowlers for not giving their 100 percent on the field. A length ball, around off, Smith goes for the pull and gets it high off the bat. The shot takes more height than distance but because the field is up, it clears Mitchell Starc at mid on. Starc simply trots after it but after the ball lands, he suddenly feels he can stop it. Starts to put in the hard yards, then a weak slide, tries to pull the ball back and hits the ropes. The umpire checks the effort multiple times whether Starc has touched the ball and rope at the same time but in the final replay, it is seen that Starc actually pulled the ball back after it hit the ropes.

FOUR! Fine shot again. England persist with the counter-attack. Hazlewood bowls short and Jacob Bethell is quick to pounce on it. Pulls it to the right of Glenn Maxwell at deep square leg. Maxwell puts in a bizarre chase. He first starts to run, then gives it up. Suddenly, he realizes that the ball is actually not coming that quickly and puts in a new sprint. In the end, that late decision costs him as he has to dive and misses the ball. England now need 196 from 235 balls.

10.40

10.34

9.3W

OUT! CAUGHT DOWN THE LEG SIDE! Two in two for Hardie. Well, we saw this in the first innings as well, not-so-good deliveries getting wickets. Hardie gives a welcome gift to Liam Livingstone, a half volley on the pads. Livingstone looks to flick and does so, but can only get it fine! The keeper, Alex Carey, dives to his left and pouches another screamer, with his left glove! Livingstone does not want to go, so he waits. The umpire raises his finger and now he has to go for a golden duck!

Liam Livingstone walks in at number 6, replacing Ben Duckett.

9.2W

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! That's an absolute screamer. A length ball, around off, Duckett looks to swing this out of the park. But the ball holds onto the pitch for a while and arrives late. Duckett is already through his shot and his bottom hand comes off the handle. The ball hits the toe end of the bat and flies wide of the bowler but Aaron Hardie, moving in that direction in his followthrough, sticks out his left hand and takes an absolute blinder. Duckett waits for a check from the umpire whether Hardie collected it cleanly and on getting the affirmative, turns back. Big wicket for Australia as the in-form Duckett departs for 32 (25). England are 65/4 and need another 206 from 242 balls.

9.10

A short ball, outside off, Ben Duckett goes for the pull but the ball does not come onto the bat as quickly as he would have liked. Mistimes the pull to wide mid on. In fact it looks like Australia believe that Duckett cannot hit down the ground. Hence, there is no conventional mid on or mid off. Both are pretty wide, almost at mid-wicket and cover respectively.

8.34

FOUR! LOVELY! This guy has taken the English summer by storm and Australia are getting a fresh taste of him. Overpitched, around middle, swinging in, Jamie Smith shows the full face of the bat and drives it back past the bowler, through mid on.

8.20

Around off, pushed into the off side.

8.21wd

WIDE. Harsh decision on the bowler but nothing that Australia can do about it. On a length, down the leg side, Jamie Smith looks to flick but misses. There is a noise as the ball goes past and Starc appeals for the catch but not with confidence. Replay shows that the ball clipped the pad. Now, if this had been the Indian T20 League, Australia could have reviewed against the wide call. But here, if they had reviewed, the wide call might have been overturned, but they would have definitely lost a review as it would have been considered as one for the catch.

FOUR! That is a solid shot. If there were doubts as to whether England will play watchfully from here on, trying to conserve wickets, the answer is NO. Brendon McCullum always advocates to play on the front foot and that is what we will see. Irrespective of the wickets, the shots will come. OUT! LBW! That is a Starc special. Ashes fans would be remembering how he cleaned up Ollie Pope at Lord's in 2023. This is more or less of that quality. A killer inswinging yorker, around middle, Harry Brook looks to dig it out but the ball swings back in pretty late and that defeats him. Gets hit on the pads and Joel Wilson does not take long to raise his finger. Brook has a chat with Duckett and signals for the review. The replay seems to suggest that Brook might have hit it but UltraEdge detects a flat line when the ball passes the bat. Ball Tracker then projects the ball to be crashing into leg stump, meaning England lose both, their skipper and a review. 4 and out for Brook, England are 46/3 and need another 225 from 258 balls.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! No review needed for this one. Australia have an early strike. It almost looked like an action replay of all the balls bowled by Hazlewood to Salt in this innings, barring that one edgy shot that went for a boundary. As mentioned earlier, this machine with a 100-year warranty does not care who is batting and how is the batting. Just keeps honing on a good length, just outside off. This one nips back in as well and as always, Salt tries to force it through the line. Gets cramped for room once more and this time, nicks it to Alex Carey, the keeper. Salt departs for 12 (14), England are 26/1 and need another 245 from 276 balls.

More frustration for Hazlewood. He lands this on a length just outside off, nipping back in, PS looks to punch but misses again.

FOUR! Fortuitous. A length ball, outside off, Salt comes down the track, looking to alter Hazlewood's length. As always, the machine with a 100-year warranty does not swerve from his length or line and gets it on a good length just outside off. Generates extra bounce as well which cramps Salt for room as he goes hard at it. The outside edge is generated but it is wide of slip and to the left of deep third.

EDGED, DROPPED! Well, Ponting questions - why isn't Steven Smith at second slip? Hazlewood maintains that channel outside off, on a good length and makes Salt feel for it. The outside edge is generated this time and it flies towards first slip but dips on its way. Matthew Short takes the decision to go to his left from second slip, gets his left hand to it but the ball does not stick. An eventful over.

1.50

Huge appeal for caught behind! Carey is excited, so is the slip cordon but Hazlewood seemed to join the bandwagon a bit late. Salt seems unfazed. Marsh reviews. It was a good-length ball, just outside off, nipping back in. Phil Salt looked to defend but the ball suddenly generated extra bounce and whizzed past. There seemed to be a noise when the ball went past and the ring of fielders between cover and point came steaming in, excited that they heard something. However, UltraEdge detects nothing and Australia lose a review.

OUT!

Well done by Hazlewood. Excellent ball to finish Carse's spell, a yorker at leg stump, but the batter digs it out towards point. 10-0-75-3 does look expensive but if you look at it this way - 6-0-63-1 at one stage and then 4-0-12-2 to finish - he can be called as the game changer.

But Josh Hazlewood, as he always does, does not play to the line of the ball, but rather, stays inside or is away from the line. Hazlewood backs away to the leg side, gets under the short ball and cuts it over point! The quick outfield takes the ball to the ropes.

Wow. Test-match stuff. More evidence of the pace and bounce that Brydon Carse brings in his repertoire. This one lifts from a length, outside off, Zampa tamely fends it away, with his bat hanging in the air. In Tests, this would have gone straight to gully but we don't see a gully usually in white-ball cricket. The ball goes to deep third. A single taken to end an exceptional over from Carse - W W 0 1 1 1. 7-0-66-3 so far for him.

OUT! CAUGHT! Two in two for Carse who is not only on a hattrick but could be in line for a 5-fer as well! Another nothing ball, but everything to gain for England from it. It is a length delivery, on the pads, Mitchell Starc looks to flick it casually and connects nicely as well. But he cannot clear square leg and it is a simple catch for Matthew Potts again! Forget how much Australia can get, how many overs can they face from here on?

This could end quickly now. Mitchell Starc walks in at number 9, replacing Aaron Hardie.

35.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! The bowling change works immediately and a big smile flashes across Brook's face. Carse has been expensive today but he will take those two wickets - first Head and now, Hardie. A short ball, outside off, Aaron Hardie immediately sets himself up for the pull, But he is completely done in by the pace, which is more than 90 miles per hour. Additionally, Carse gets a good lift from the bumper and as a result, the pull shot attempted results into a massive top edge. The ball goes straight up in the air and Matthew Potts waits calmly for it at short mid-wicket. Another budding stand of 55 has been broken as Hardie departs for 23 (25). Australia are 216/7 with 89 balls still left in the innings.

DRINKS BREAK. Excellent passage of play for England. This seems like a good pitch to bat on from the offset but batting is not exactly easy. Australia have been desperate to go hard at the ball but it is not quite coming onto the bat consistently. And it does not help when batters get set and then throw it away. England have done what Australia haven't - shown patience. They have kept the ball around the stumps mostly, not given too much width and just frustrated the batters into throwing it away. Of course, they have earned the wickets of Short and Smith through excellent deliveries but most of the dismissals have been due to the pressure built. From 59/1 at the end of 10, the next 22 have gone for just 123 and yielded 5 wickets. One does feel that 250 could be tricky on this surface to chase, given that Josh Hazlewood will find the pitch tailor made for him. But to get to 250, Australia will have to work hard, primarily, bat out their 50 overs. And to kill all doubts whether LIAM LIVINGSTONE will bowl or not, here he is.

How has that missed the stumps? Gosh. Marsh was nearly bowled around his legs. A full toss, outside leg, Marsh got down to sweep and it seemed like he missed it. DRINKS BREAK. This is impressive bowling from England. Bowling would have been a worry after the previous game but in favourable conditions, they have made the most of it. They might not have got quick and early wickets but with the balls getting old, they are making them talk, especially with cross-seam positioning. They would now want to work their way through the middle order. Australia, on the other hand, need some calm heads for a partnership. In walks another hero from the previous game, MARNUS LABUSCHAGNE. OUT! BOWLED! Oh well, someone please stop Potts, because he is absolutely flying! What a perfect delivery. The ball is still nipping around and Smith is shuffling across, trying to counter the same. But the ball is pitched on a perfect length, just between good and full and catches Smith on the walk. That's not the only thing. It nips back off the seam viciously to catch the veteran completely off guard. Takes the inside edge, hits the pads and deflects onto the stumps. Smith rarely seems to agree that he was defeated by a good ball but while walking back to the dressing room, he seems to indicate that it was an absolute peach and he could not do anything about it. Human after all. Smith departs for 4 (6) and Australia losing their way now - 46/0 becomes 89/3!

Landed outside off, take a picture of this if you are watching - Travis Head has left a ball outside off! A decent opening over for both sides.

WIDE. Miles down the leg side, Travis looks to flick but misses. There is some kind of an appeal from Ben Duckett and Will Jacks from the slip cordon but neither the keeper nor the bowler look interested. Harry Brook asks his fielders whether he should go for the review for the catch but does not get any convincing nod.

On a good length, around midde, angling away, Head punches it towards cover.

FOUR! A gentle loosener this time. The plan from England would be not to give width to Head outside off, but you cannot be too straight either. This is a full ball, on the pads and Travis Head has easy pickings, as he clips it through mid-wicket.

At the stumps, coming in again, Matthew pushes it wide of mid on to get the scoreboard rolling with a single.

Beauty. This one comes back in as well, from the angle, Short looks to punch it through the off side but there is exaggerated inward seam movement on this one. Nips past the inside edge.

Good, tight start. Potts comes running in from over the wicket and bowls on a length, just outside off, angling it in. Matthew Short watchfully pushes it away towards point.

The sun has just popped out at Headingley as the players from both camps make their way out to the middle. As always, Harry Brook has a big smile on his face as he leads his unit onto the field. Two men in yellow walk alongside them, one by the name of Travis Head and the other by the name of Matthew Short. Matthew Potts will start off proceedings for the game, to Short, coming up the hill, with a slip in place. The pitch has a tinge of green.

Australia's skipper, MITCHELL MARSH, says that he would have bowled first as well but is happy batting first. Smiles on being asked whether he has a fit XI and informs that Josh Hazlewood, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc are back in the playing XI. On being informed that he made 16 changes by the 35th over in the first ODI, Mitch says that it is a blessing to have so many all-rounders. On Travis Head, the skipper says that he has been a blessing to the team and wishes that his form continues. On his own bowling, MM says that he should be bowling soon.

England's captain, HARRY BROOK, says that when Jos Buttler was in charge, chasing was their preferred way and given their long batting lineup, they prefer to go after a target. On learnings from the previous game, Harry says that the plan is always to put pressure on the opposition with bat and ball and give your 100 percent on the field. Feels that there might be a little bit movement early on but eventually, he expects another flat deck in this game. Does not look too much into the loss on Thursday and just hopes that England make use of any momentum that they get their way. On the team news, the skipper informs that Jofra Archer has bee rested and Olly Stone takes his place.

Meanwhile, in Chennai, local lad Ravichandran Ashwin has finally got his first wicket of the game, dismissing Shadman Islam for a well-made 35. Bangladesh are in trouble now, at 96/2, having lost both their openers in the span of 5 overs, after a strong opening stand of 62. They will not be looking at 515 from any point of view at this stage and hope to bat for as long as possible and make India earn the win, rather than gifting it on a platter. India, on the other hand, will aim to keep making inroads and have another decent bowling performance. Sunday should be the last day of this Test with the final session of today dictating how many sessions we could have on Day 4.

So in a bit of a surprise, Australia's big three are back - Hazlewood, Maxwell and Starc. Though only time will tell how fit are they, having just recovered from a viral illness. As far as England are concerned, one would assume that they have given a rest to Archer, as the last game was on Thursday, to ease him back from recovery. Stone should enjoy the conditions in Leeds.

England (Playing XI) - Phil Salt, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Harry Brook (C), Jamie Smith (WK), Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Olly Stone (IN FOR JOFRA ARCHER), Matthew Potts and Adil Rashid.

Australia (Playing XI) - Travis Head, Matthew Short, Mitchell Marsh (C), Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey (WK), Glenn Maxwell (IN FOR CAMERON GREEN), Aaron Hardie, Mitchell Starc (IN FOR BEN DWARSHUIS), Adam Zampa and Josh Hazlewood (IN FOR SEAN ABBOTT).

TOSS - The flip of the coin is done and it has gone Harry Brook's way. Could be a very important toss as the conditions are getting overcast all of a sudden. Without a doubt, Brook says that ENGLAND WILL CHASE. Chasing has been England's forte and also, in the previous game, while bowling second, they were having issues with the wet ball due to the dew. They will hope that things fall in place for them in this match with the toss going their way. Additionally, since this is a day game, we won't have any dew issues.

WEATHER REPORT - As of now, it is good atmosphere to play cricket in Headingley but the forecast suggests some rain spells through the game. May not be a shortened match but we could expect some interruptions. Let's hope for a complete game of cricket without any hassles.

Talking about last evening, Afghanistan created history by winning their first-ever bilateral ODI series against South Africa, beating them comprehensively by 177 runs. En route, they earned another record as Rashid Khan became the first male player to take a 5-wicket haul on birthday in ODIs! That series is happening in the Middle East and the South Africans have had not headache, but migraine issues against spin. However, that's what challenge is all about. It is an inexperienced team and you can gain experience only by playing more and more. Given the way the series has gone so far, a whitewash seems to be on the cards. The final game will be played on Sunday, in Sharjah.

Given that there is still some time for the clash to begin, let's take a peek on international cricket matches happening elsewhere. Starting with India, after a surprisingly unsuccessful period with the new ball in the fourth innings, Jasprit Bumrah has just managed to break Bangladesh's 62-run opening stand, dismissing Zakir Hasan. The hosts have turned the tables nicely after a difficult couple of sessions on Thursday, posting 376, then dismissing Bangladesh for 149, before batting again and declaring at 287/4, setting Bangladesh a mammoth 515. India would be happy with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant scoring centuries and hope for their form to last long, especially with the World Test Championship final loading next year.

How did England lose the first ODI? By following the phrase - 'You live by the sword and you die by the sword.' When Ben Duckett was batting, he was putting the Aussie bowlers to the sword but his dismissal allowed a small window to be opened and the Kangaroos hopped in. Knowing Brendon McCullum's nature, he would not be fazed by the loss one bit, as he will aim for the long-term approach. Bazball is what we have been witnessing in Tests but maybe, a small tweak could be provided. As in, when you get the platform, make use of the same but get yourself in before lashing the sword. The bowling was a worry in the opening game and the hosts would be keen on doing better on that front.

So what's the issue with Australia? A strange kind of virus has spread through their camp, leaving their players sick and unfit for play. They were forced to play without Josh Hazlewood, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchelll Starc which hurt them big time and given that this game is coming at a quick turnaround, one doubts whether the visitors would be able to get any of their missing frontline players back. Add to it, they have got a massive summer loading, so the think tank would be figuring out the workload from a long-term perspective. One good thing for them is that because they have won the first game, they can afford extra rest for their players, given that the next game is on Tuesday.

A 'head'start is something that every team wishes for in a game and in a series. Australia got that through Travis Head in their series opener as they chased down 316 in a jiffy but if truth be told, it was a game which England lost, rather than Australia winning. From a dominating position at 213/2, the hosts lost their way, as they fell short by at least 30-40 runs of what would have been a challenging total. Australia will be happy, having managed to win without their first-choice XI but England will also understand that there are plenty of loopholes in this Australian unit that they can expose. So as it happened in the T20I series, will it be 1-1 after the second ODI? Or will Australia add to their streak of 13 successive ODI victories? We shall find out together.

... MATCH DAY ...

The bandwagon moves to Leeds for the second ODI of the five-match series between Australia and England at Headingley. After a commanding victory in the series opener, Australia head into this contest with the upper hand and will be determined to extend their lead to 2-0, aiming to push England onto the back foot early in the series. However, England, despite their loss in the first game, had several promising moments, and they will be eager to bounce back and level the series before heading to Chester-le-Street for the third ODI. In the first ODI, England elected to bat and looked set for a massive total, cruising at 213 for 2. However, Australia’s spinners mounted a remarkable comeback, with England collapsing to 315 all out, a score that felt below par given their strong start. Travis Head’s scintillating 154 then anchored Australia’s chase, guiding them to a comfortable victory, as they reached the target with six overs to spare. Heading into the second ODI, Australia will be hoping to maintain their momentum, but they will be keeping an eye on the fitness of key players like Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, who were sidelined for the first match due to illness. The absence of the pace duo slightly weakened Australia’s pace attack and the injury to Ben Dwarshuis, who suffered a pectoral strain, added to their concerns. A fully fit Starc and Hazlewood will provide a significant boost, giving Australia’s bowling attack more bite and variety. For England, the second ODI represents a crucial opportunity to regroup and address the issues that cost them in the opener. While Ben Duckett and Will Jacks made valuable contributions at the top of the order, others like Phil Salt, Harry Brook, and Liam Livingstone couldn’t capitalize on their starts. England’s middle order crumbled against spin, and they will need to find a way to counter that threat. It's all set up for yet another entertaining contest between the two old rivals. Who are you backing to come out on top?
