Siraj scampers ahead and puts in the dive but the ball lands short and the batters get a single.

That's the end of the game, or is it? Muted appeal for caught behind but it looks like that one came right off the arm. Rishabh Pant pouches it safely.

OUT! CAUGHT! Taskin Ahmed chances his arm yet again but this time, he has to walk back to the hut. Ravichandran Ashwin cleverly just drags the length back a bit and drifts this one into the pads. Taskin Ahmed gets in an awkward position and swings across the line, against the turn as well and gets a top edge. The ball goes high and lands around the mid on region where Mohammed Siraj settles under it nicely and takes a simple catch. Ashwin gets his sixth and India are now just one wicket away from the win.

FOUR! Taskin Ahmed swings his bat and gets good purchase on that one. Tossed up full and around off, Taskin takes the front leg out and hammers it to the left of mid off for a boundary.

OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! Jadeja gets his second and Shanto's brilliant innings come to an end. Bangladesh lose their 8th and the most important wicket and now India can sense a win! Jadeja sticks to dart the ball in quick, and just throws it wider outside off, on a shade fuller length, Shanto swings hard at it and looks to lift it over covers but the ball skids through and comes quickly to the bat. Shanto, as a result, doesn't connect it through the middle and slices it up in the air. The ball swirls over in the overcast skies where Bumrah from covers runs back and takes a fantastic sliding catch. But nonetheless, a true captain's knock from Najmul Hossain Shanto as he departs on a well-constructed 82.

Very quick, darted on the middle and with a bit of a turn into the batter. Shanto leans on but closes the bat face early and the ball catches the leading edge before rolling to cover.

Oh, was there an inside edge on that one? There were two sounds for sure and it seems like there was a faint inside edge. Ravindra Jadeja gives this one some flight and gets it to dip around off, Najmul Hossain Shanto gets a big stride across to block but the ball turns in, takes a faint inside edge and lobs up after hitting the pads. There's no forward short leg in place and the wicket-keeper, Rishabh Pant scampers in front to take the catch but can't quite reach it.

OUT! CAUGHT! A complete lapse in concentration from Mehidy Hasan and its that man again, Ravichandran Ashwin with another five-fer that too in front of the home crowd and his family as well. A 37th five-wicket haul in Test matches for Ashwin, equalling the late and great Shane Warne as well, just behind Muralitharan's 67 five-wicket haul, a staggering feat indeed. Ashwin drags the length back and flights the ball up on middle and leg, Mehidy skips down the track but doesn't quite get to the pitch of the ball and yet he tries to force the lofted shot. The ball goes high and down to long on where Ravindra Jadeja is stationed and he takes a simple catch. Bangladesh going down in a hurry now.

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! The writing seemed to be on the wall there for Litton Das and Ravindra Jadeja does get his first wicket of this innings. Lovely bit of flight on that one, getting it to drop as well around off. Das gets on the front foot and pushes at it but the ball just grips and turns away, catching the outside edge and goes straight into the clutches of Rohit Sharma at first slip who takes a sharp catch. Bangladesh reeling now at 205/6! India just 4 wickets away from the win with Bangladesh needing 310 more to win.

FOUR! A positive and fairly risk-free shot that from Shanto. Drifted in full onto middle, Shanto just backs away a bit and goes inside out before lofting it right back over the bowler's head for a boundary. The 200 also comes up for Bangladesh.

Back to over the wicket for the lefty now. Tossed up, around off and turning in, Najmul Hossain Shanto works it away to mid-wicket.

Oh, dear! Litton Das has thrown caution to the wind and he got nowhere near the pitch of the ball. Ravindra Jadeja tosses the ball up a bit more and throws it outside off, Das sits down for the slog sweep but the ball jumps off the surface and turns away sharply going past first slip. They get a leg bye.

OUT! TAKEN! Ravichandran Ashwin comes into the attack and gets the breakthrough right away, his fourth of this innings as well. Lovely bit of flight on that one, drifted in a tad full and onto middle and leg, Shakib Al Hasan prods to block it off but the ball just takes an inside edge and clips the bat to go behind short leg. Yashasvi Jaiswal over there dives to his left and takes a brilliant low catch, he's been brilliant in the catching positions this game. End of Shakib's resistance as he departs for 25 (56). Also, number 520 for Ashwin as he overtakes the great Courtney Walsh in terms of wickets in Tests. What a brilliant feat for Ravichandran Ashwin!

Drinks break! A very fascinating first hour on Day 4 and Bangladesh have remained resolute so far with both Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan applying themselves brilliantly at the crease. Mohammed Siraj has bowled a long spell and bowled a few top deliveries but Shanto has played him very well. India might now opt for spin for both ends as there is some variable bounce and enough of a rough around the batter's crease to trouble the batters. Bangladesh will be hoping for more of the same at least till Lunch.

A sharp turn now, from outside off to the middle,  Najmul Hossain Shanto gets across and negotiates the turn well and tucks it to square leg.

Shakib was nowhere close to getting back and got a big reprieve.

Some words exchanged between Siraj and Shanto and the latter smiles it off.

At 135.7 kph, hard length outside off, Shakib Al Hasan prepares himself for a square cut but ends up almost chopping it off the inner half of the bat in front of the point region.

Wow, lovely nut! Bumrah stretches his length a bit, on a fuller length, just in the corridor of uncertainty. It leaves the batter as Shanto looks to push at it on the back foot. Plays inside the line and the ball deviates away whispering to the outside edge.

On the back of a length, angling away from off, Najmul Hossain Shanto makes a watchful leave.

Spears it in with a bit of an inswing on middle and leg, Shakib pushes it straight down the ground with a full face of the bat. Rohit Sharma athletically moves and dives to his left from mid off and intercepts the ball well and keeps it to just a single. Excellent fielding from the Indian skipper.

Shakib Al Hasan seems to be stung on the bottom hand due to the extra bounce on the last ball of the previous over and is in a bit of pain. The physio is out to apply the magic spray and it looks like Shakib is getting a bit of tape on it as well.

Extra bounce, yet again! A well-directed short one, Shakib defends and it hits him on the gloves. It rolls past gully and the batters take a run.

FOUR! First boundary of the day and it's a sublime one from the Bangladeshi veteran! Good-length delivery, around off, Shakib Al Hasan gets the ball at a good height, transfers the weight on the back foot and punches it on the rise sweetly through covers for a boundary.

Hits the deck hard, slanting over middle, Shakib Al Hasan tries to defend it but that excessive bounce pings his glove instead.

Siraj bangs it into the surface, on leg, Shakib ducks underneath it.

Surprising to see seam from both ends now as Jasprit Bumrah has started a new spell after an over of spin from Ravindra Jadeja.

There's that extra bounce again! Hits the deck hard, on middle and off, Najmul Hossain Shanto is surprised by the bounce, hits the higher part of the bat on the back foot and falls short ahead of gully.

Beaten! Siraj holds his line and length, just around off, on the fifth stump line, enticing the batter to have a poke at it. Shanto has a feel for it and hangs his bat away from his body only to get beaten on the outside edge by a whisker.

PITCH REPORT - Dinesh Karthik and Murali Kartik are inspecting the Day 4 surface. Murali Kartik begins and says that least number of overs were bowled on the third day with least number of wickets to fall. About the pitch, he says that there is enough bounce and turn for spinners. Dinesh Karthik joins him and states that the pitch is crumbling and enough happening for the spinners. Says that the difference between the red and black soil pitch is that the red soil strip disintegrates. Says that both ends have different kinds of roughs and as they walk on the other side, they state the hardness of the pitch has been consistent.

The weather conditions in Chennai are still gloomy and overcast. There was an overnight rain but fortunately, there's none as we speak, which is a good sign. Also, the players from both camps are seen carrying out their fitness drills. So, let's hope we start on time.

Right then, Bangladesh have a mountain to climb and then some and with four batters already back in the hut, this will be a test of Najmul Hossain Shanto's patience. India on the other hand will look for early breakthroughs to ensure that this game doesn't get prolonged any further. An exciting first session awaits, so, don't go anywhere.

In contrast to Day 2, where we saw as many as 17 wickets fall, only 5 wickets fell on Day 3 with India dominating proceedings with the bat. The hosts have also done well to keep chipping away with wickets on what looked like a belter of a trach to bat on but it did start to turn in that final session and the two Indian spinners will be looking to wreak havoc early on Day 4.

Day 3 was abruptly adjourned a bit early due to bad light with almost 10 overs still remaining in the day and Bangladesh ended the day 158/4, still needing a mammoth 357 runs for the win. The visitors began their run chase solidly but soon enough things started to fall off with just their skipper, Najmul Hossain Shanto standing tall with an unbeaten half century to his name.

Hello and welcome to Day 4 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. With how the game has panned out so far, this could very well be the final day of play.

... DAY 4, SESSION 1 ...

Right then, after a brief challenge by the Bangladesh openers, India have bounced back very strongly and asserted its dominance in this Test match. With 6 wickets remaining, India, stepping into Day 4, will aim to wrap things up as quickly as possible. With spin doing its trick now, Bangladesh, on the other hand, will now have to face the threatening tandem of Ashwin and Jadeja on the next day. And it is probably writing on the wall about the inevitable. But as Bangladesh need 357 more runs to win, India too, will have to snag those 6 wickets to officially register a victory. Day 4 begins at 4 am GMT, on Sunday, 22nd September. Till then, cheers!

Ashwin masterfully exploited the pitch conditions. His efforts paid off handsomely as he claimed three wickets in rapid succession, which pretty much opened the game and decisively swung the match in India's favour. To compound Bangladesh's struggles, the Indian fielders exhibited remarkable agility and precision graced by two sensational catches to dismiss Zakir and Mushfiqur - one screamer by Jaiswal at gully and one by KL Rahul at mid on respectively.

As the final session began, India ramped up their efforts to break the deadlock. It was the ever-reliable Bumrah who provided the crucial breakthrough, living up to his reputation as a game-changer. The pitch, now showing signs of wear and tear, began offering variable bounce and subtle but perceptible turn. Rohit, sensing an opportunity, shrewdly brought his spin bowlers into play in tandem. This tactical move was designed to intensify the pressure on the Bangladesh batters.

But things took an absolute turn from there, as Bangladesh found themselves in a precarious position. They were forced to rebuild from scratch after losing four big wickets in rapid succession with their top order blown away in a flash. What had started as a promising 86 for 1 quickly deteriorated to 146 for 4, leaving them facing a daunting challenge and a steep hill to climb with 6 wickets remaining. Najmul Hossain Shanto is fighting a lone battle being unbeaten on 51 and with Shakib partnering him and Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan yet to bat, Bangladesh would aim to construct a long partnership the next day as two whole days still remain in this game. But the question is, how long can the Bangladesh batters sustain?

STUMPS, DAY 3, SESSION SUMMARY - 24.2 Overs, 102 Runs, 4 Wickets - Well, since the day's play has been called off, let us recap what happened in the final session. Bangladesh's opening pair started with a determined display, making it clear they weren't there to be easily dismissed. Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan put up a spirited challenge against the Indian bowlers, maintaining a steady scoring rate and a brisk partnership of 62. However, their momentum was disrupted when both openers fell within a short span, about half an hour into the session. Despite this setback, Bangladesh continued to score at a decent pace trying to counterpunch.

UPDATE - 10.54 am GMT - And unfortunately, folks, we do not have good news! The play has officially been called off on Day 3 with 9.4 overs remaining. The bails have been removed now and the umpires are walking back off the field. Probably they are worried about that threateningly dark cloud hovering overhead which might bring some thunder and showers. Well, the ground staff knows the weather much better here. We may not like it, but it is the correct decision to not continue as the artificial light has taken over natural light as well.

Even more worrying signs regarding the state of play now as the ground staff are bringing the covers on. There is one big dark cloud that is coming in and the umpires are still out in the middle having a discussion. With the amount of time still left in the game, it would be safe to say that this is it for Day 3.

Hold on, folks! The conditions have become murky in the last few minutes and now, the umpires are having a serious chat about things. For now, the light meter is brought out and they might go off as well. Rohit Sharma is asking whether he can continue with spin and Mohammed Siraj is seen giving the ball a twirl, probably for the first time in his life. The umpires have decided to take the players off the field and this might just be the end of the day's play. The big question is if the spinners had continued, would the play have been called off now? Or would they have waited?

Fuller and on middle. This is driven down to mid off. Shakib does not take a run.

Siraj begins with a short one first up! Shakib evades it now.

Drinks break! Just 10 overs left in the day now and India have done extremely well to pick up four wickets in the final session. Bangladesh have looked with the bat but just haven't managed to stick around on the crease for long. Najmul Hossain Shanto has made a fighting half-century and he will know that he needs a big ton to salvage something from this game. India on the other hand will look for a couple of more wickets before Day 3 ends. Also, Mohammed Siraj is brought back into the attack as the natural light starts to fade away. The umpires are having a look and we might see the light meter soon.

This is flatter and around off. Shanto pushes it but finds cover.

Shakib now takes one as he sweeps this through square leg for one.

On the shorter side. Shanto guides it past point and gets to the other end.

Flatter this time and around off. Shanto keeps it out.

Shanto now looks to play the reverse sweep. This time this turns in and there is also extra bounce. It hits him on the arms.

The reverse is out again. This time from Shakib. It goes off the inner half on the off side for one.

Now tosses this one up again. Shanto this time though leans forward and keeps it out.

SIX! All the way! That is a strong hit. Fifty for Shanto. Superb knock by him. He's played with a lot of intent. He gets the sweep out and nails it. This sails over the square leg fence for a biggie.

On the pads. Shakib goes back, works it around the corner and takes one.

This time it is a little too full. This is driven straight to mid off.

Shakib uses his feet now, he comes down the track and drives it but finds mid off.

Gives it air and lands it around leg. Shakib comes forward and keeps it out well.

Flatter and on off. This is pushed wide of mid off. Shanto sends Shakib back in time.

Just a small push now towards the off side for a quick run.

Loopy ball around off. Shakib shows the full face of the bat and plays it back to the bowler.

Pushed through around off, Shakib Al Hasan gets on the front foot to block.

Flatter one, angled in sharply from around off, Shakib Al Hasan blocks it off.

Heart in the mouth moment again for Shakib! Ravindra Jadeja flights the ball up full and around off, Shakib Al Hasan attempts the reverse sweep but gets a tope edge off the pads and the ball lobs up just over a scampering Yashasvi Jaiswal at short leg and lands safely.

Nicely tossed up. On middle. Shanto leans forward and keeps it out.

Tossed up around off. Shakib pushes it to mid off and takes one.

Shakib Al Hasan is the next man in.

OUT! TAKEN! Rahim falls. Ashwin has another one now. This is tossed up on off. Rahim looks to go over mid on but this one turns back in just a little and he fails to keep it along the ground, ending up hitting it off the inner half of the bat, just above the ground and flat towards mid on. Rahul dives forward, maintains his fingers under the ball and takes it inches above the ground. They check upstairs to see if it is a clean catch and it is deemed that Rahul did extremely well to do so. Mushfiqur Rahim departs without making much of an impact and suddenly, a procession of wickets for Bangladesh as the spin is doing the trick now. India, right on top.

Is that a clean catch? The Indians are claiming it but the umpires have gone upstairs. The replays roll in and it seems KL Rahul has caught it cleanly. The third umpire checks it from a few different angles and the fingers are under the ball. The decision is made and it is OUT!

SIX! He has nailed that! He has absolutely nailed that! On middle. The slog sweep comes out and it goes well over the square leg fence.

Sharp turn! This lands on middle and spins in viciously. Rahim leaves it alone. It hits his body.

Beauty! This goes on with the arm. It lands on off. Rahim plays for the turn in. He is beaten.

FOUR! The reverse sweep is out again! This is nailed through point and it races away.

Around off. This is guided through point for one more.

On middle. Rahim pushes it to cover.

Angled into middle. Kept out again.

Flatter again and around off. Rahim waits and then guides it to point.

FOUR! Shouts of 'catch it' but it falls short! Jadeja tosses it up on the pads, Mushfiqur Rahim sits down for the hard sweep but ends up getting a top edge over square leg. It goes flat but dips down quickly as well. Mohammed Siraj races in from the deep and dives forward but the ball eludes him and goes to the fence.

Edged away for a couple of runs. Bowled from around the stumps, drifted in around off, Mushfiqur Rahim pushes at it and gets it off the outside edge through backward point for a couple of runs.

Full on off, Najmul Hossain Shanto with a reverse sweep straight to deep point for a single.

Fuller now and on off, Najmul Hossain Shanto blocks it off the front foot.

On a length again around off, turning in a bit sharply, Shanto makes another good block.

Extra bounce! Tossed up around off, jumping off a fuller length, Najmul Hossain Shanto hops back to keep it down on the off side.

Mushfiqur Rahim is in at number 5.

OUT! KNOCKED HIM OVER! Ashwin strikes and gets another man, his second wicket! Number three down! Tosses it up on the middle and off channel. This lands and turns away a little off the deck. Haque is drawn forward to defend but he plays inside the line of the ball anticipating it to stay straight. Instead, the ball turns enough to beat the outside edge and hit the off pole. Lovely delivery and India further press their opponents in this game. Mominul Haque, who looked a bit rusty for most of his innings departs on 13. Ashwin's joy knows no bounds and Chepauk again roars in cheers as the local boy strikes. Bangladesh now 124/3.

Flights it up on off, Mominul pushes it straight back to Ashwin.

Close! An arm-ball, nicely coming into the batter, and getting that extra zip off the surface, on middle, Najmul Hossain Shanto is hurried to tuck it away towards the leg side and gets a single.

Pushed through, full and keeps it on the middle and leg, Shanto paddle sweeps it fine and gets a couple towards deep fine.

That in-drifter on a fuller length, on middle, Shanto defends it to the leg side off the inner half of the bat.

Flatter and wider of off, Mominul is happy to pad it away.

Was there any edge? An appeal for catch but 'No' says the umpire. Flighted delivery outside off, it turns in sharply and it hits Mominul Haque high on the front pad. The ball then lobs to Jaiswal at short leg.

Dragged length, at off, Mominul Haque hangs back and dabs it under the bat.

A bit slow now, on a fuller length, Mominul defends it off the inner half of the bat.

FOUR! Slogged away! Jadeja bowls it quick, full and on off, Mominul Haque sits down and slogs it powerfully towards the vacant deep mid-wicket for a boundary.

SIX! BOOM! Anything overpitched and it is being dispatched against Ashwin! Full, looped up, on middle, Shanto dances down the track and tonks it over the bowler's head for a biggie.

Was in the air but there was no one to catch it. Sliding it on the middle and leg, on a fuller length, Mominul Haque comes forward to defend it but plays a bit over the line and inside edges it. The ball lobs towards the left of the short leg region and they take one.

Quicker one, outside off, Haque goes for the cut but gets beaten by the pace and bounce.

Drinks break! Almost an hour gone by in the final session of Day 3 and Bangladesh have lost both their openers thanks to a couple of fine catches by the Indian fielders. Jasprit Bumrah got the breakthrough for his side a few overs in after the break and then Ravichandran Ashwin was rewarded for some persistent bowling. The pitch is still pretty flat and Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque have started positively. They will look to play out the remaining final session.

FOUR! 100 up for Bangladesh. They have scored at a decent rate so far! Akash Deep varies his length and bangs it into the surface, on the bodyline, from around the wickets. Najmul Hossain Shanto lifts his front leg in the air, extends his hands above his head and controls the pull shot well, and along the ground through deep backward square leg for a boundary.

Nice and full, angling in at off, Najmul Hossain Shanto covers the line, prods ahead and meets the ball on the merit.

Hard length, over the top of the middle, Shanto hops on the back foot and tucks it to the front of mid on.

Akash Deep bowls a short of a length ball, and this is defended into the leg side.

Flat and full around off, defended watchfully.

Flighted and outside off, turning away, Mominul looks to defend it but gets beaten on the outside edge.

FOUR! Guided away! Ashwin is visibly not happy with that effort as Akash Deep could have done much better there in the deep to stop it. Ashwin bowls it quicker, flatter, and shorter but down leg, Mominul hangs back and simply tickles it fine. Akash Deep from short fine runs to his left and dives to get to it but fails to pull it back.

Good length on the stumps, Mominul blocks it right under his feet.

That's missed everybody! On a fuller length, and bounces prodigiously off the deck with a bit of an away turn as well. Mominul Haque prepares for a sweep shot but the ball bounces above his helmet and even beats Pant behind the pegs before running to the boundary for four byes.

Ashwin slides it down leg, Mominul Haque misses to clip it and the ball deflects off Pant's right pad and lobs to the short square leg fielder.

This one shoots off the deck from the good length, and nips away outside off, Shanto is taken a bit by surprise by that excessive bounce and manages to guide it along the ground towards deep backward point for a couple of runs.

Back of a length, on the fifth stump, Shanto responds with a solid back foot punch.

Quite full and outside off, angling in, Najmul Hossain Shanto dabs it with hard hands to the off side.

Fuller in length at off, at 138.6 kph, Najmul Hossain Shanto defends it on the front foot and holds his pose. Akash collects the ball and shows a bit of aggression. Exchange of smiles in the end.

Length again, around off, this is tucked to the right of mid on.

Play and a miss! Akash charges in from around the stumps, lands it on a hard length and just around off. Gets it to nip away a shade and beats the outside edge of Shanto.

Akash Deep (4-0-14-0) is back on.

Well bowled! A bit closer to the body, in the line of the middle stump, on a length, with a bit of turn away, Mominul Haque gets on the back foot and manages to tap it to the off side off the outer half of the bat.

On the middle and leg, nudged to the leg side again.

With a close field now, Ashwin bowls it full and drifts it to leg, Haque taps it with soft hands to the leg side.

Mominul Haque is the new man in.

OUT! CAUGHT! Catch it is the call! Did that carry? It certainly has and Shadman Islam has to depart now! Ashwin gets his first wicket and Bangladesh have lost both their openers now within the span of half an hour or so. Ashwin bowls it flat and quick on a length, in front of the pegs, Shadman Islam gets across a tad and lazily tries to nudge it away to the leg side, but in this process, he airs it flat and towards Shubman Gill stationed at short mid-wicket. Gill reacts alertly and moves his body low and to the right, and takes a very sharp catch, just inches above the ground. He falls over but manages well to sustain the ball in his hand. A soft dismissal for Shadman Islam as he departs on 35. Also, this is Ravichandran Ashwin's first wicket in this Test.

FOUR! Shanto trying to take on the spinner now! A loosener delivery, drifting way down leg, full in length, Najmul Hossain Shanto sits down on his knee and paddles it hard to the vacant deep fine leg for a boundary.

Bumrah overcooks the yorker and slips in a full toss on off, no harm done as Shadman drives and finds the fielder at cover.

Nice and full, around off, defended nicely to the off side by Shadman.

Length and on the stumps, with a varied pace, Shadman presses forward and defends it to covers.

Bumrah switches to around the wicket. Good length delivery on off, this defneded in front of mid off.

Good running between the wickets, again! But equally well fielded by Jadeja! Across off on a good length, Shadman gets on the bounce and cuts it through the gap between gully and backward point. Jadeja from point gives it a chase towards the boundary and just about manages it to pull it back before the ropes. He overruns into the fence but makes sure to flick the ball into the playing area. Two taken.

Angling on the leg stump line, Shadman gets a bit across and tucks it off his toes to wide of mid-wicket for a couple of runs.

Good work there in the deep by Siraj! Saves a certain boundary! That was hit with brute force! Short and on the off stump, Najmul Hossain Shanto lifts his front leg in the air, swivels and pulls it towards deep backward square leg. Siraj from deep fine runs to his right, slides and intercepts the ball to keep it to a single. A streak of appreciations from his fellow teammates.

Good length on the off stump. Shanto does well as he brings his bat down in time and keeps it away towards mid on.

Edged but didn't carry! Bumrah lands this full in length, and keeps the angle outside off, a bit of variable bounce on that one. Najmul Hossain Shanto comes forward to push it away but outside edges it but plays with soft hands and the ball lands in front of the second slip.

Nagging length again, around off, Najmul Hossain Shanto gets behind the line and bunts it on the strip.

Back of a length, and closer to the body. this is blocked on the back foot.

Goes full on the off stump. Shadman pushes it between short extra cover and mid off.

FOUR! Oh, that's firmly struck from Shadman! Ashwin entices the batter and bowls it very slow, lands it full and outside off, Shadman Islam comes a couple of steps forward and slaps it through covers for a boundary.

Full on the stumps, Shadman blocks it on the front foot to short mid-wicket.

Full on the off stump. Shadman drives it to mid off.

Full on the off stump. Shanto looks to drive down the ground and gets a leading edge to backward point for a single to get off the mark.

Oh, just short! Full on the off stump. Shanto prods forward and turns it in the leg side. It lands short of diving forward short leg to his right.

Back of a length outside the off stump, this time, Bumrah rolls his fingers a bit as gets it to deviate away. Shadman is squared up a tad on the back foot and is beaten on the outside edge.

Slightly on the pads, on a good length, Shanto misses his flick off the back foot and the ball deflects off his pads to deep fine. They cross for a leg bye.

Fuller and around off from Bumrah, Shanto leans ahead and defends it underneath the bat.

OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! WOW, WHAT A CATCH FROM JAISWAL! He has taken an absolute screamer and finally, India get the first breakthrough. A hard-earned one but Bumrah does the trick. Jasprit Bumrah spears it on the back of a length, and keeps the line outside the off side, it gets a bit of an extra bounce and skids on quickly after pitching. Zakir Hasan gets hurried on the shot and the ball gets heavier on him as well. As a result, he doesn't move his feet and hangs his bat away from his body, and a healthy outside edge is found. The ball carries flat and low in the air towards the right of gully where Yashasvi Jaiswal quickly reacts to it, dives to his wrong side to his right and plucks it out of thin air. And suddenly, the crowd has found its voice in Chennai.

Good length on the middle stump. Zakir blocks it to mid on.

A beauty to end the over! Looped up around off, lands and turns sharply. Shadman is taken by a surprise and fends it to the off side.

Provides more revolutions on the ball, lands full and on off, Shadman defends it well.

Flighted off break around the off stump, and it turns away with some bounce. Shadman defends forward.

Good length on the off stump. Shadman punches it back to the bowler.

There's some hint of turn now. Full and outside off, Shadman gets ahead to defend but as the ball turns a tad, a thickish outside edge is found and it runs towards the short third region for a couple of runs.

Ashwin drops a floater that curves back into the batter on a fuller length, on middle, Shadman Islam pushes it to mid on.

Pitches it outside leg and angles it on middle, Zakir Hasan gets across and nudges it on the pitch to end the over.

Fuller and spearing in around off, at 135 clicks, Zakir Hasan hits it off the inner half of the bat to mid on.

Slants it across off on a fractionally fuller length does Bumrah, Zakir Hasan replies with a watchful forward push to the off side.

Bumrah bangs it short and on the leg stump line at almost 138 clicks, Zakir is cramped for room as he attempts for a pull shot and wears on the body after inside edging it.

Good tight line and length! Half-tracker on the top of the middle, Zakir Hasan gets behind the line and punches it solidly back to Bumrah.

Bumrah with a couple of slips and a forward gully bowls it on a hard length, on off, Shadman hops back and tucks it to deep square leg for one.

Had to hurry there! Tossed up on the stumps. Shadman drives it to mid off for a quick single. A quicker throw might have been close at the striker's end.

Oh, some bounce there! Ashwin pitches this on a length, and angles on the pads, it keeps straight on and Shadman gets beaten on the nudge. Pant collects it and flashes off the bails in the blink of an eye, but Shadman is well inside the crease.

Quite slow, outside off on a fuller length, Shadman Islam prods ahead and eases it to the off side.

Pitched up, on off, Hasan works it away to deep mid-wicket for one.

Floated up, full and on middle and off channel, good forward defence by Zakir.

Ashwin starts from around the stumps, hits the good length, around off with a hint of an away turn, Shadman Islam gets on the back foot and nudges it across for a single towards deep mid-wicket.

We are back for the final session on Day 3! It is still a bit overcast and that hasn't had any effect on the pitch as there hasn't been much or rather any movement on offer. Out come the two umpires and the players of India with still 34 overs to be bowled in the day. The duo of Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam are all set to resume their stay at the crease. It will be Ravichandran Ashwin to begin proceedings with the ball post Tea. Let's go...

... DAY 3, SESSION 3 ...

Right then, what a contrast for Bangladesh with the bat from the first innings! The duo of Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan have remained positive and made full use of the batting-friendly conditions. They still have it all to do in the final session as well but this will give them a glimmer of hope. Join us at 9 am GMT for the post-Tea session on Day 3.

The second session on Day 3 began with the Indian batters firing on all cylinders and we saw a couple of batters going on to reach their centuries. India eventually declared midway through the session and set Bangladesh a target of 515 big runs. However, the duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj couldn't extract much from the surface and were easily dealt with. It was Ravichandran Ashwin who planted a seed of doubt with his off-spin before Akash Deep bowls some tight lines and beat the bat on a few occasions.

Another session of Test cricket has flown by and it seems like Bangladesh have finally turned up with the bat. India still well and truly in command but Bangladesh will be very pleased to head into the break with all 10 wickets intact and they have also managed to score at a decent rate.

Nagging length around off, Shadman gets across and nudges it away off the outside edge down to deep backward point for one. That will be TEA ON DAY 3!

Switches back to around the wicket and angles in a full ball onto the off pole, Shadman gets forward well and drives it away to extra cover.

Hard length on off and angling away, this one stays a bit low, Shadman hangs back and jams the ball down into the off side.

Shorter in length and around leg, Zakir Hasan misses the pull and the ball goes off the pads down to fine leg. They pick up a leg bye.

Akash Deep has bowled a couple of beauties after switching to over the wicket. Nagging length, just short of a good length and on off. This one angles away but just holds its line a bit as well. Zakir Hasan is beaten past the outside edge.

A slight delay in proceedings here as Shadman Islam seems to be struggling with cramps. The physio is out to have a look and stretches the hamstring a bit before Shadman is back on his feet. Just a couple of overs left before Tea it seems and the batters trying to slow things down.

FOUR! Wow, Zakir Hasan has played a few gorgeous shots in this over and Mohammed Siraj is completely baffled. Pitches it up again looking for swing but it is more of a half-volley, Zakir plants his front leg across and smashes the drive through covers for a boundary. 14 off that over, an expensive one from Siraj.

FOUR! Oh, that is so sweetly timed! Good length again and around off, Zakir Hasan just prods halfway and gently pushes it away, the ball though goes off the sweet part of the bat and goes straight back past the bowler for a boundary.

SIX! That came out of nowhere, top shot! Dropped fractionally short over leg stump, Zakir Hasan gets in position early and just pulls it high up and over the fence behind square leg for a biggie.

Nicely bowled! On a good length on off, bowled with an upright seam and this one leaves the left-hander late, Zakir Hasan has a poke at it but he gets squared up and beaten past the outside edge.

OUT! TAKEN! You live by the sword, you die by it! Pant was looking to go after everything and perishes in the attempt to do so. However, he's played a brilliant knock. It was probably pre decided that once he gets to his ton, he'll go after everything. Got a boundary on the last ball and now falls. Steps out. Hasan drags his length back a little. Pant still swings. This goes off the inner half, quickly to the left of Hasan. He reacts well and takes it.

FOUR! Misfield and it goes to the fence. He sees the ball coming in with the angle and sweeps it. It goes towards deep square leg. The fielder there lets it through.

On middle. This is pushed down to long on for one.

FOUR! Trademark Pant! This is fired on his pads. He goes down on one knee and then plays a sweep right behind the wicket and it goes to the fence.

SIX! Bang! Pant wastes not time. It's his favourable match-up against the left arm spinner. Steps out. Gets to the pitch of it and hammers it over the long on fence.

We are back for the post-Lunch session on Day 3! The umpires are back out in the middle and so are the players of Bangladesh. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are also back out to resume their stay at the crease. It will be Mehidy Hasan to begin proceedings with the ball after the break. Let's play...

... DAY 3, SESSION 2 ...

Right then, India's lead is already up to 432 runs and they still have 7 wickets in hand. With there still no sign of spin on the deck, India will look to bat most of the next session and add 100 or so runs to the total. Bangladesh need to be very careful and need a change of plans after the break if they are to cause any trouble to the Indian batters. Join us at 6.40 am GMT for the post-Lunch session.

The second hour of the first session saw a lot more action with both Gill and Pant surpassing the 50-run mark and then towards the end, Pant really opened up his arms and then came a plethora of boundaries. Gill didn't hold back either and hit a few lovely big hits. There was one proper opportunity created by Shakib Al Hasan late in the session but skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto dropped a simple catch to add to Bangladesh's misery.

The first hour of play was more of a sedate one with India playing a few shots in between after which the boundaries dried up as Mehidy Hasan bowled a good holding spell from one end. However, Bangladesh failed to create wicket-taking opportunities and both Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant were able to keep the scoreboard ticking.

A dominating session for India with the bat and they now have complete control of this Test match. There was overnight rain in Chennai and the conditions were overcast to begin with but the Bangladeshi pacers didn't find any lateral movement or swing and the pitch had really flattened out. As many as 124 runs were scored in just 28 overs with most of them coming in the last 10 overs or so.

Drags his length and on middle, Shubman Gill goes back and across, drags it down to long on for a single. And that will be LUNCH ON DAY 3!

Tossed up pushed through, full in length at 80.6 kph, Pant steps out again and drills it along the carpet and down the ground for a single.

IN THE AIR...AND DROPPED! Oh, Najmul Hossain Shanto what have you done? This is the last thing Bangladesh would have expected, that too, from their skipper. Tossed up on the stumps from over the wicket, Pant crouches low and goes for a slog sweep but gets a top edge over the leg side. The ball swirls up over the mid-wicket region and Shanto there moves to his right, settles under the ball, tries to catch it with hard hands and does not undercup it well and spills it. Hands on heads in the Bangladesh camp. Another life granted to Pant and how more costly will it prove for Bangladesh? Only time will tell.

Flat and full, at off, Shubman Gill is quick to rock back and cuts it past point for a single.

Short and outside off, Gill hangs back and cuts it hard past covers. Mominul on the boundary does the mopping-up work by running to his right and keeps it to two.

FOUR! He is making batting look so easy! Shakib gifts a full toss on the off stump line, Gill drills it past long off for a boundary.

Nicely bowled, oh, that's been given as a wide, a pretty late call as well. Slower bumper, from around the wicket and over off, Rishabh Pant gets across and ducks under it as the ball loops over his head. WIDE!

Pant really opening up his arms now. Banged in short over the stumps, Pant gets in position but is hurried a bit as he pulls it well in front of mid-wicket for a couple of runs.

FOUR! Lovely shot! Back of a length and angling away from around off, Rishabh Pant waits well and punches it away well behind point for a boundary.

Oh, that one almost went to hand! On a good length around the top of off, Rishabh Pant looks to swat it away across the line but miscues it away to the left of the bowler, a bit uppishly as well to mid on.

Pitched up around the leg stump line, Rishabh Pant looks to get low and pick it up over backward square leg but misses and gets hit on the pads.

Drifting in on the pads, Gill presses forward and nudges it in front of mid-wicket.

With 20 minutes left to the Lunch break, Shakib Al Hasan has finally been brought into the attack for the first time on Day 3.

SIX! Sublime! Mehidy Hasan drops it quite full and in front of the stumps, on middle, Shubman Gill gets his dancing shoes on, charges down the track, gets his bat properly underneath the ball and lofts it over cow corner for a six. Just for a moment, it felt like Shakib could get in action there just near the ropes but it sails well over his head.

Dropped short, on the middle and leg, Shubman Gill knocks it to short mid-wicket off the back foot.

Quick and full on leg, Gill leans ahead and pushes it back to the bowler.

Very slow through the air at 77.9 kph, full and on the pads, Rishabh Pant waits for it and nudges it with soft hands to square leg for a quick single.

Good length delivery on the stumps, Pant blocks it in front of covers.

FOUR! What a shot! Pitched up, pushed through, a juicy half-volley on offer, on the leg stump line, Rishabh Pant dances down the track, stays leg side of the ball to create the room and lofts it inside out over covers for a cracking boundary.

Just a slight halt in play as the players call for some refreshments. The sun isn't quite out but it sure is humid out there in the middle. We also saw Shakib Al Hasan warming up in the last over but it will be Mehidy Hasan to continue bowling his long spell.

Oh, this one stays a little low! Not a fuller-length delivery at all, outside off, Shubman Gill hops on the back foot and expects the ball to bounce, but negotiates well in the end and punches it to the off side. These two have added 88 runs together now and India lead by 382 runs.

Length ball, skidding through, outside off, Gill gets ahead on the front foot and drives it to cover.

FOUR! Pulled away neatly! That half-tracker on the middle, Shubman Gill waits for it to arrive, this one sits up nicely for him as he creates a stable base by weighing on the back foot, and executes a grounded pull shot for a boundary through vacant deep mid-wicket.

A bit of aggression from Gill there! But, swings and misses! Seeing Gill skipping down the track for a big hoick, Mahmud adjusts his length and bowls it wide of off with a lateral movement. Gill only manages to connect thin air.

12TH TEST FIFTY FOR RISHABH PANT! Slightly on the shorter side, on middle and leg, Pant nudges it through square leg for a single. A well-composed and well-constructed half-century by Pant. He has taken his time and has partnered Gill effectively.

Full, on stumps, defended well.

Mehidy pushes it through, full and aims the off-peg, Rishabh Pant walks a bit more across and tries to flick it away but the ball stays low on the bounce and pings his pad. A stifled appeal for LBW from Litton Das but he is the loner to do so.

Pitched up, full and on off, Gill with a firm front foot push towards mid off. India lead by 376 runs now.

Overpitched and outside off, Rishabh Pant half-squats at it and slices it through the left of the short point fielder for a single. That wasn't very far from the fielder there. Pant on 49 now!

Varies his pace up a bit does Nahid, bowls it quite full, target the blockhole, Pant jams his bat down in time and pushes it back to the bowler.

Pitched up, full and angling at off, Rishabh Pant is stubborn and just defends it right underneath his eyes.

An attempted yorker on off, Rishabh Pant does well to jam his bat down in time and digs it out to mid off.

Nahid comes from around the stumps, and spears it in at 144.6 kph, full and outside off, Rishabh Pant covers the stumps and lets it pass.

Just a bit of a discussion between Najmul Hossain Shanto and the umpires as he wants the ball to be changed. He brought it up in the last over as well but the umpires brought out the gauge test and the ball passed it. We see almost every team do this when there's nothing happening for the bowlers and a ball change might bring a change in luck as well but this ball isn't going anywhere for now.

Drinks break! Well, the first hour of Day 3 has flown by and fair to say, that India has done well to resist so far, going unblemished. After an initial burst from Gill and Pant both in the first half hour or so, things have slowed down considerably for India since the last few overs, but with wickets in hand, India really won't mind. Bowling has been quite decent from Bangladesh and haven't given away many runs since the last thirty minutes. But the batters have been stubborn and have bided out the first hour safely. Spin hasn't been much effective and also, we haven't seen any stint from Shakib with the ball as yet as well. All Bangladesh need is wickets, and that too, in bulk now as India is ahead by 356 runs.

Overthrows! On the shorter side and on the pads, Rishabh Pant stays back and just works it off the back foot in front of square leg for one. The fielder there fires in a wayward throw at the bowler's end and the batters are able to pick up a bonus run.

FOUR! Rishabh Pant has had enough and breaks the shackles to bring up a boundary after 46 balls. Tossed up on off and middle, Pant comes down the pitch and clears the front leg before lofting it straight back over the bowler's head for a boundary. There were fielders at long off and long on but Pant had the right measure of it.

A proper bumper this, dug in well short over middle, trying to attack the helmet but the ball flies over Shubman Gill who just ducks a bit. Just 5 runs in the last five overs but Bangladesh need wickets here.

Change up from Taskin as he brings out the knuckle delivery. This is floated up full and wide of the off stump at 119 clicks, the ball wobbles away after pitching as Shubman Gill leaves it alone.

Good stop! Full and around off, Shubman Gill gets well forward and creams the cover drive but the man at short extra cover makes a fine stop diving to his right.

Taskin Ahmed bowls this one a bit short and around off, gets some uneven bounce as well, Shubman Gill looks to stand tall and slap it down on the off side but doesn't control his shot. The ball goes down towards cover-point where the substitute fielder Taijul Islam can't quite get to it and parries it on the bounce.

The umpires walk out to the middle, and the players of Bangladesh spread out to their respective positions as well. Shubman Gill unbeaten on 33 and Rishabh Pant on 12, to resume their innings. The live pictures from the ground show that there has been some rain in Chennai but the broadcasters have confirmed that Day 3 will start on time which is excellent news. We are just about 20 minutes away from the start, so, stay tuned.

With things turning out at a rapid pace, a result before Day 5 seems highly likely. The first hour of the first session today could well set the tone for the remainder of this intriguing contest. Will India press home their advantage, or can Bangladesh spark a dramatic turnaround? The stage is set for another riveting day of Test cricket. Stay tuned as the first ball isn't far away.

Now, with Bangladesh already staring at a huge target, and the wear and tear of the pitch hinting towards more effectiveness of spin in the next two days, they would really need a solid opening hour to prevent India from running away. Shakib Al Hasan, pretty much ineffective until now with the ball, will surely be more crucial when the ball gets that grip, along with Mehidy Hasan. It’s all about utilizing the conditions well and adapting accordingly.  Their ability to exploit the deteriorating surface might be key to Bangladesh's fightback.

Bangladesh on the other hand, would not be very pleased with how things panned out for them on the second day. Coming out to bowl again after just a 47-over stint with the bat is not that easy. However, a slight ray of hope for them was that they did manage to take three early wickets. Taskin Ahmed looked much improved with his lines and lengths while Nahid Rana has shouldered him well too. But they know, the job is far from done as they come to Day 3, they would expect a strong comeback and aim to restrict India from mounting a huge total on the board. But for that, they need step up collectively as a whole unit.

India might be in a strong position if you look at the scorecard, but they have some issues to address as well. The top order hasn’t contributed much and the bulk of scoring has been done by the middle and lower middle order. However, Shubman Gill resisted strongly after India lost its top three pretty soon. Yes, Virat Kohli not taking the review for that LBW must be itching the team pretty much but that's in the rearview mirror now. Looking forward, with Pant and Gill set to resume their innings, and a long batting depth to follow, India wouldn’t mind batting all day long as there’s a lot of time left in the match. However, it all depends on the first hour or so. If they sustain it without much damage, we could be seeing a total well past 400 as well.

Day two in Chennai was wild! Who would have thought we'd see 17 wickets fall? That's never happened before in a Test here. The fast bowlers grabbed 14 of those wickets. In Chennai of all places, where spinners usually run the show. Bumrah was on fire for India and took a spectacular 4-fer, doing his thing like always. Akash Deep too, showed promise with the cherry. And for Bangladesh, the real wrecker-in-chief was Hasan Mahmud who bagged five wickets to his name. While Taskin Ahmed too, showed huge improvement.

Hello and a very warm welcome to Day 3 of this first Test between India and Bangladesh. It is called a 'Moving Day' by the pundits but this game has moved at a brisk pace and might as well get wrapped up before the fifth day or so, given how things have panned out so far. But as of now, India holds a strong position after taking the broad lead of 308 runs. Whereas, Bangladesh is aiming for a miraculous comeback.

... DAY 3, SESSION 1 ...

Right then, that is it from all the action of Day 2. As the game progresses, Bangladesh faces a steep uphill battle. Their primary objective now will be to contain India's momentum and prevent them from running away with the match while India would be mighty pleased to extend the lead beyond 350 to get in the safe zone. And with the wear and tear of the pitch, with evident roughs at both ends, we might see more effective spin in the remaining days. Day 3, is often known as the 'Moving Day' in any Test, but this one has already moved at a rapid pace. With all said and done, the action on Day 3 begins on Saturday, September 21 at 4 am GMT. Ravindra Jadeja is down for a chat. He says that missing out on the ton is part and parcel of the game but is quite happy with his bowling. Adds that he has a good opportunity to get to 300 Test wickets on this ground but they need to get to above 150 which will put them in a good position with the lead. Reckons that the pitch looks good but there is still something in it for the pacers and they can exploit what is on offer. Goes on to say that the chat with Ashwin while batting was that they would not take many risks with the running and just take the easy single on offer. Ends by saying that there is still a fair bit in it for the bowlers and whether it's a pacer or a spinner, they are in the game.

So, in whose favour is this Test match tilted towards? Of the six sessions played so far, India has convincingly controlled four, including a clean sweep of all three on Day 2. Bangladesh's influence has been limited to just two sessions that too on the opening day. So, it is pretty much clear that India holds a commanding position.

Cut to the third innings, India too, started off with a bit of a struggle as they lost both openers inside the first ten overs. However, the cushion of a substantial lead allowed them to weather this early storm. Gill and Kohli rose to the occasion, forming a resilient partnership for the third wicket. The duo showcased their skill with a series of elegant strokes, effectively steadying the innings with a 39-run stand. But eventually, Virat Kohli perished right on the cusp of the stumps throwing away a good start. And in the end, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill saw India through the day. Bangladesh on the other hand, managed to take three wickets, with Taskin Ahmed, Nahid Rana and Mehidy Hasan each claiming one.

India on the other hand, were almost flawless with whatever they did with the ball in hand in the second and the third sessions. Following a dominant performance in the second session, the bowlers didn't waste much time cleaning up the tail of Bangladesh as Bumrah and Siraj took one apiece to bundle the opposition on a low score and a healthy lead of 227 runs. Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers as he snagged a sensational 4-fer and the others chipped in with wickets as well. A rarity in Chennai, Ashwin remained wicketless but fairly to the spinners, there wasn't much help from the pitch as yet, but they did well enough to tie the opposition for runs.

As the final session began, Bangladesh was already in dire straits, having lost eight wickets and managing only a paltry 112 runs. Their key batters failed to make a significant impact despite favourable batting conditions. Mehidy Hasan's contribution of 27 runs came under constant pressure and proved insufficient to turn the tide. Only four batters managed to surpass the 20-run mark, with Shakib and Mehidy emerging as the top scorers. Ultimately, Bangladesh crumbled under the extreme pressure exerted by the bowlers, unable to mount a substantial resistance.

STUMPS, DAY 2 - SESSION SUMMARY - 33.2 Overs, 118 runs and 5 wickets. Another immersive day has flown by in this first Test in Chennai and fair to say, this game has moved at a brisk pace already. Overall, a brilliant day for the home side as India has asserted a firm stronghold in the game as of now. Contrary to expectations of a batting-friendly surface, wickets fell at a rapid pace throughout the day. In a surprising twist, a total of 17 wickets toppled during the day's play, of which 14 were taken by the seamers. Also, it surpassed the record for the most wickets fallen in a single day of a Test match in Chennai. And in just another achievement, Jasprit Bumrah became the only 6th Indian pacer and the 10th Indian bowler to take 400 international wickets.
